The characters for “Ye Hua” are 夜 (night) 华 (this one is tricky because it could mean many different things... But there's some connotation of glory / royalty / goodness).
The characters making up “Bai Qian” are 白 (white) 浅 (light / shallow).
Ye Hua & Bai Qian, the perfect Yin and Yang... My Reylo heart is filled.
Tumblr media
They have the ending that Reylo should have had...
Tumblr media
Like Dongfang Qingcang & Orchid / Xiao Lanhua ! (So they are THE Chinese Reylo ! Really, if you're a fan of Reylo, go for it ! You can literally make a grid and check the boxes for all the similarities !)

Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English
Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies. I've hit the link limit on this post so I've had to remove NovelUpdate links, but they're still in the version of this post on Wordpress. Note that Taiwanese titles are not included on this list.
This is everything I know of as of October 24, 2024. There might be more. I tried. Resources used to compile this list: Danmeinews.com; this Carrd, last updated in March 2023; this other carrd last updated October 23 2024; list of danmei with official licenses on NovelUpdates; a similar list on Goodreads; danmei-specific list on Reddit that to my eye looks accurate for the larger publishers but isn't thorough for some of the smaller ones.
-
Seven Seas:
The full list of danmei novels licensed by Seven Seas is here. The full list of danmei manhua licensed by Seven Seas is here.
These titles are in various stages of publication, from "entire series released" to "license literally announced less than a week ago." As far as I know, all Seven Seas titles are available world-wide, through major distributors and libraries, and in e-book and print formats. Seven Seas translation quality varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).
Mo Xiang Tong Xiu titles:
The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System (Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong)

Rosmei:
Rosmei licenses are Singapore distribution rights only. There is a list of international partners organizing group orders here. I've personally placed my orders through Yiggybean, as discussed in reply to this ask. Most of these titles are only being released as print editions, tho titles that weren't originally on JJWXC (of which there are several here) WILL have e-book editions. My first book from Rosmei arrived, and I found the translation and editing to be very strong. I can't speak to how accurate it may be to the Chinese original, but it read smoothly and had very few errors. Overall, though they've made some mistakes, they've been communicative and responsive.
Ning Yuan titles:
BAIHE: At the World's Mercy by Ning Yuan
BAIHE (I think???) The Creator's Grace by Ning Yuan
priest titles:
Coins of Destiny (Liu Yao)
The Defectives (Can Ci Pin)

Peach Flower House:
Peach Flower House titles are primarily for sale through their website and through some distributors, such as Amazon.com. Whether titles are e-book only, print only, or both varies by title. In my opinion, Peach Flower House has inconsistent inconsistent editing quality, but the books are very readable, and I'm excited that they're working with translators such as E. Danglars. I haven't bought any of their special editions so can't speak to their extras, but I've bought all their print translations and will continue to do so going forward.
Da Feng Gua Guo:
The Imperial Uncle (Huang Shu)
Peach Blossom Debt (Taohua Zhai)
Other Titles:
Golden Terrace (Huang Jin Tai) by Cang Wu Bin Bai
In the Dark (Zai Hei An Zhong) by Jin Shisi Chai
Little Mushroom (Xiao Mogu) by Shisi
University of the Underworld (Yinjian Daxue) by Ziloi
-
Via Lactea:
The partial list of danmei novels licensed by Via Lactea is here, but there are titles I've seen them selling that aren't on this list.
Via Lactea titles are primarily for sale through their website and through some distributors, such as Amazon.com. All titles are either print-only or e-book + print. Only a handful have actually been released, the rest are licensed and presumably in progress. I've now read three titles published by Via Lactea and while the translations are decent I could wish the editing was more consistent. Everything reads as if it would have been improved by one more thorough proof read.
Jing Shui Bian titles:
Salad Days (Jing Jiu)
Silent Hearts (Mo Mai)
Other Titles:
Apocalypse (Quanqiu Jinhua Hou Wo Zhan Zai Shiwulian Dingduan) by Qi Liu
As I've Told You Before by Sheng Jiang Tai Lang

Aloha Comics:
A tiny, Hawaii-based press focusing on manhua. Titles are available through major retailers such as Amazon and Bookshop.org. I've purchased one of these titles - Nirvana in Fire - and was please with the quality despite a couple minor errors.
All these titles are manhua!
Day Off by Qing Cai
Heaven Official's Blessing Animation Manhua by Bilibili and Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (this is a manhua made based on the donghua, using donghua art)
Here U Are by DJUN
Link Click by Li Haoling and Haoliners (not technically danmei!)
Nirvana in Fire (Lang Ya Bang) by Hai Yan (not technically danmei!)
-
Monogatari Novels:
Monogatari Novels is based in Spain. These titles can also be ordered from at least some major retailers. Note that there has been some controversy about Monogatari Novels. I'm personally not ordering these works until more information is available.
BAIHE: A Clear and Muddy Loss of Love (Jing Wei Qing Shang) by Please Don't Laugh
BAIHE: Female General and Eldest Princess (NuJiangjun he Zhang Gongzhu) by Please Don't Laugh
How to Survive as a Villain (Chuan Yue Cheng Fanpai Yao Ru He Huo Ming) manhua by Yi Yi Yi Yi
The Legendary Master's Wife (Chuanshuo Zhi Zhu de Furen) by Yin Ya
The Silent Concubine (Ya Nu) by Qiang Tang
BAIHE: Soulmate manhua by Wenzhi Lizi
-
BLoved Publishing:
ngl I can't figure out exactly what is up with this, and there seems to be some controversy related to them and their relationship with Monogatari Novels. Their website is depressingly low on details. However, this list is for completeness, so here we are. I'm not ordering from them based on the information currently available. There's more about the conflict between them and Monogatari here.
How to Survive as a Villain (Chuan Yue Cheng Fanpai Yao Ru He Huo Ming) manhua by Yi Yi Yi Yi
The Legendary Master's Wife (Chuanshuo Zhi Zhu de Furen) by Yin Ya
-
Chaleuria:
As far as I can tell, Chaleuria has not updated their webpage since April 2023, so the current status of in-progress titles is unknown. All titles are digital and/or e-book, and I'm not sure how to purchase them as I haven't tried.
The Complete Guide to the Use and Care of a Personal Assistant (Zhuli Shiyong Zhinan) by Why Radiance
Deep in the Act (Ru Xi) by Tongzi
Fake Slackers (Wei Zhuang Xue Zha) by Mu Gua Huang (no longer available)
From Body to Love (Leng Yan E Nan: Xian Shenhou Ai) by Wan Wan Yi Xia
Interstellar Power Couple (Xingji Qiangli Lianyin) by Kun Cheng Xiongmao (no longer available)
Intoxicated Friends (Zui Qing Zhi Pengyou) by Ye Shu Ying
The Long Chase for the President's Spouse (Zongcai Zhui Fu Lu Manman) by Three Thousand Crow Language

Reborn into a Hamster for 233 Days (Chong Shengcheng Cangshu de 233 Tian) by Yi Shu
Records of the Dragon Follower (Cong Long Ji) by Yueren Ge
Urban Tales of Demons and Spirits (Dushi Yaogui Lu) by Qie Er
World Hopping: Avenge Our Love (Ni Wufa Yuliao de Fenshou, Wo Du Neng Gei Ni Song Shang) by Xiaomao Bu Ai Jiao (no longer available)
-
Webnovel:
When I first made this list, I heard that Webnovel had a few titles but couldn't actually find them - but now I've found them, thanks to a list someone else put together. I'm including direct links to them, since I had so much trouble finding them at all.
Comrade: Almost a Cat-astrophic Love Story (Jintian ye Yao Nuli Dang Zhimao) by Demonic Fire (link)
My Boyfriend is a Dragon (Nanpiao Shi Tiaolong) by Chubby Strawberry Sauce (link)
The National Sweetheart Livestreamer is a Pro! (Quanmin Zhubo Shi Duiba) by Mo Shang Wang (link)
-
Honorable Mentions:
There are a handful of titles I know of that are official translations of C Novels. These are not books with contextual queerness, but for folks with an interest in Chinese history and culture, they are worth checking out anyway, especially because understanding these stories can help understand the above books. Also, some have active shipping fandoms (for example, I've written for Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Daomu Biji). I've included two above under the entry for titles from Aloha Comics (Link Click and Nirvana in Fire) and here are a couple others I currently know of:
Dream of the Red Chamber (Hong Lou Meng) by Cao Xueqin, available in translation for free from Project Gutenberg
The Grave Robbers’ Chronicles (Daomu Biji) by Nanpai Sanshu (six volumes are available in English from Things Asian Press)
Journey to the West (Xiyou Ji) by Wu Cheng-en, in four volumes from University of Chicago Press
The Legend of the Condor Heroes (She Diao Yingxiong Chuan) by Jin Yong, in four volumes from St. Martin’s Press
Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo Yanyi), attributed to Luo Guanzhong, available in translations for free from Archive.org
The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants (Zonglie Xiayi Chuan), attributed to Shi Yukun, available in translation for free from Archive.org
Water Margin (Shuihu Zhuan) by Shi Nai’an, from Tuttle Publishing
RESOURCE: List of Chinese speculative fiction in English translation
RESOURCE: More Chinese speculative fiction in English translation
I will add to the "Honorable Mentions" list if I find any other more mainstream titles with official translations.
-
Rumored Licenses:
Sometimes, I hear rumors about titles being licensed before the license is announced - and thus before we know which publisher has licensed them (assuming the rumor is even true). I thought I should note these somewhere. Titles I know of rumors about currently are:
A Certain Someone (Moumou) by Mu Su Li
Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know (Mozun Ye Xiang Zhidao) by Cyan Wings
The Fourteenth Year of Chenghua (Chenghua Shisi Nian) by Meng Xi Shi
Guide on How to Fail at Online Dating (Wanglian Fanche Zhinan) by Jiang Zi Bei
Immortal Koi is Going to Debut (Jinli Daxian Yao Chudao) by Mo Xi Ke
Mist (Bowu) by Wei Feng Ji Xu
-
A handful of other licenses are mentioned on the Carrd I linked at the beginning of this post; I have no idea the status of those titles and wasn't able to find information on them while putting together this post other than what was listed on that Carrd, so I've omitted them.
Now go forth, and buy some books!

Review
Eternal Love / Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms / Three Lives Three Worlds

The series was broadcast on Zhejiang TV and Dragon TV from January 30 to March 1, 2017.
Episodes: 58
Date: Jan 30, 2017 to Mar 1, 2017
Studio: Gcoo Entertainment, Jaywalk Studio, San Weihuo
Network: ZJTV
Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Xianxia
=======================================
Plot:  Since Bai Qian is the future Queen of the Fox Tribe, she was quite mischievous (at a very young age) and because of this, her mother in particular insists she go study Taoist Cultivation at Kunlun Mountain, with Master Mo Yuan. As the school only allows male students, Zhe Yan(High God) used his magic to disguise Bai Qian as a male to hide her identity, which, only a few people saw through her disguise (Mo Yuan is one of them), even knowing Bai Qian is a female, Mo Yuan(High God) accepted her as one of his disciple anyway because since the moment she stepped into the Grand hall of Kunlan Mountain, the sacred/magical artifact: Jade Purity Fan of Kunlun chose her as it master, and Mo Yuan knowing this cannot be handed over to one outside of Kunlan Mountain, he accepted her as his disciple because he sees that she’s fated to be his disciple. From there on, she was given the rank ‘Seventeenth’ and another identity known as Si Yin.
Although she is not a very hard working student, but she does show a high respect for Mo Yuan, and Mo Yuan does dotes on her, even to the point that he would subject himself to the heavenly trial in her stead for her to become High Immortal (and gets severely injured in the process), after this, she becomes quite studious.
After a devastating war, between the Ghost Tribe and the Celestial Tribe, the celestial tribe paid a heavy price when Mo Yuan (God of War) used his spirit to seal the demon lord (Qing Cang). 70000 years later, in an attempt to re-seal the demon lord who broke free, Bai Qian have succeeded, but her memories and celestial powers was sealed up by Qing Cang, where she was sent to the mortal realm and became a mortal (which was part of her heavenly trial to ascend to ‘High God’ status) with the alias of Su Su. In the mortal world, she meets Ye Hua and the two fell in love. In order to prevent the same tragedy (that happened to Sang Ji and Shao Xin) from befalling, Ye Hua attempts to fake his death while hiding Su Su from the Nine Heavens. However, Ye Hua's plans were eventually thwarted and Su Su was brought to the Nine Heavens. Su Jin, who is jealous of Ye Hua's devotion/love for Su Su, intentionally creates a series of misunderstanding between them and causes Su Su to lose her eyes. Thinking that Ye Hua has betrayed her, the devastated Su Su jumps off from the Zhu Xian Terrace, returning her back to her goddess status.
When Bai Qian body was found by Zhe Yan in the Ten Miles of Peach Wood, she was saved, however her very depressed self requested for Zhe Yan to give her the amnesia potion so she can erase her memories/forgets Ye Hua.
Three hundred years later, the two meet again as deities. Another lifetime another world, Ye Hua recognizes Bai Qian as the only woman he loves but the latter remains indifferent. Ye Hua begins to pursue Bai Qian for a second time to regain her affections, and eventually succeeds when his love is requited. From beginning to end, time continues to flow and the lines of their fates continue to cross: an entanglement of three lives and three worlds and a road of peach blossoms.
Ranking: 10/10 <- I know this is actually/probably the first time I’ve given a full mark to a series review, perhaps it’s even my first time doing up one on my end! But, I just really have to considering, I am really into/obsess with this drama on my end. It’s definitely one of the best, if not, the best I’ve seen. I cannot count how many times I have re-watched this on my end, I’m so glad I gotten into this drama because I don’t regret watching it. It has really given beyond on what I have hoped for, and more (so this is definitely my all time favorite Chinese Fantasy Romance Drama) Aside from a few characters that gets on my nerves (but what series doesn’t have those characters to add in the drama?), I do love a lot of characters in this (which I will do a list later (in this post) to show some of the chara’s I love/hate). What I am impress with is, the writer actually manage to solve everything (without any plot-holes) by the end of the story. Like, all the obstacles was removed, with no more questions left. At first, I actually had a question that was on my mind since the beginning and then when it was revealed I was like "ohhhh... so that's why...". I love how the love story was executed, and how each character did their roles well. I love Ye Hua’s love/devotion to only Bai Qian(Su Su), and no matter what happens, he loves her, and only her. There are times where I think the writer might do something stupid which adds to more drama, but in the end, it surprises me in a very good way, like when Miao Qing secretly add the love-potion into the soup that she made for Ye Hua but Ye Hua didn’t drink it because he knows there’s something in that soup, and I’m like “Yes!” and when Su Jin created that fake Su Su to seduce Ye Hua (when Ye Hua was doing his heavenly trial in the mortal world (without his memories at all)) to anger Bai Qian, he still didn’t disappoint me, because he’s only been waiting for one woman i.e. Bai Qian because he made a promise with her when she visited him when he was 11 years old that they will get marry when he’s older, his whole life, he waited just for her, and I’m like “awwww”. Seriously, Ye Hua didn’t disappoint me, and I love that about him! I also love how Ye Hua gives me a feeling that I can believe in him and that he's strong from beginning to the end... Strong in terms of character, and his power level was consistent and doesn’t disappoint, I also love how the battles are executed...(honestly Mashima can take a lesson from this -.-).
On my end, I’m a sucker for a good romance story, and Eternal Love has it all! I love how it was truly a touching love story for the main pair (Ye Hua x Bai Qian), with a lot of obstacles that comes their way (that made me cry), it was an emotional roller-coaster  but what I love is where there are times I have my doubts but the writer didn't disappoint and gave me more to show me how much they only love each other. I love the scenery and the effects, omg.... where am I going to find another series like this?! I love the music too! There's alot of characters I love but there's also those I hate with a passion but glad they got what they deserved in the end..but in the overall what I love the most is, the pairing/otp I love can get a HAPPY ENDING that they deserve, because that's the most important!!! It made me feel so happy for them!!!

Additional comment: Within the Celestial Tribe, only the Dragon Clan, the Pheonix Clan, and the Nine-tailed fox clan are well respected within the Celestial Tribe.
Although Ye Hua is the Crown Prince of the Celestial Tribe (Nine Heavens), I guess he’s also part/representation of the Dragon Clan(?) since his true form is a Dragon <3

And Bai Qian is the White Fox (Nine tales) ~
Tumblr media
Bai Feng Jiu as the red fox (Nine tales)
Tumblr media
Sigh, too bad, I didn’t get to see Zhe Yan’s true form (since he’s the Pheonix) <3

What if Petra didn’t die. No, she died as a human, but when she died as a human she returned to her goddess/ immortal deity self. So Petra is a goddess who became a human temporarily and fell in love with Levi. Reasons why she became a human temporarily as part of her ascension to a higher level deity.
Levi too is actually an immortal deity who is temporarily human, because he too like Petra is undergoing a trial as a human as part of his ascension to a higher level deity.
So what if they meet again as immortal deities and fell in love again? This time they will stay together. Just like the main couple Bai Qian and Ye Hua on the CDrama Eternal Love (AKA Ten Miles of Peach Blossom).
I really should make this into a fan fiction.

Me watching Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms (spoilers ahead), 3/?
EP19–EP26: Angst, angst, angst. Finally, the episode 26 finishes the mortal arc and returns Su Su to her original form, Bai Qian.
First things first, Ye Hua fucked up. He may have tried his best, but it clearly wasn’t enough. He couldn’t even get his magic mirror in time before Su Jin did some damage with it, he couldn’t tell his own wife to beware the people X, Y, Z, he couldn’t plead with his mother to help him protect Su Su and he didn’t even manage to set some trustworthy people (like Third Uncle) to help him keep an eye on Su Su 24/7 when he’s not around. I get that his options were limited and that he wanted to publicly distance himself from Su Su as much as possible, but there were ways to protect her better, if only he was smarter.
Which he wasn’t. And Su Su paid for it with her eyes. Don’t get me started on this, because again, he could have devised a way out of it. He was, after all, the Crown Prince, unlike his second uncle, he wasn’t as easily replaceable (think of his warfare merits!), he could have tried to plead with the Heaven Monarch, or blackmail him (”if you won’t let me have this mortal, I’ll rebel against you”) or he could have offered his own freaking eyes as as a payment. But no, instead he’ll let his innocent wife to get hurt and afterwards he’s surprised that she flinches at his touch. Like, dude, you just took her eyes, you literally maimed her, why do you expect that she’ll be happy to have you after that?!
About the beta couple – honestly, not much is happening with them. Dong Hua went to mortal realm to have his “tribulations” and ascend to higher status (I suppose), but I didn’t really understand how it’s connected to Feng Jiu. It sucks that not even we, the viewers, know whether he has any feelings or not and whether he loves her or not. He just keeps saving her (not that it’s always her fault, mind you!), smiles mysteriously and....that’s it. Hard to say what Feng Jiu sees in him, he’s like a handsome statue most of the time. It would be fun if they bantered or even talked some more, as it is, their relationship is even more superficial than the main couple’s.
I am bravely continuing this series. Most of the fans say that the last arc is the best, with Bai Qian back to her immortal form, so I am curious if I’ll enjoy at least the second half of the series. And naturally, I want to see the villains suffer. A lot. (it’s like my biggest motivation to make myself keep going)

TMOPB, the REAL REASON for the Mo Yuan x Bai Qian shipping!! (I ship it and write fanfics for it too and I ain’t never gonna stop!)
It must be said: Even without watching the "Once Upon A Time"/TMOPB movie, it is called THREE LIVES THREE WORLDS TEN MILES OF PEACH BLOSSOMS. Where was Ye Hua at the start? A useless spector? A golden Lotus? How did this impact Bai Qian at all? :l It makes more sense that they ARE THE SAME PERSON. Mo Yuan dies and Bai Qian preserves his body, enter the JOINED HEAVENLY TRAIL. You heard me. It would have made the story BETTER if they shared their trial together. In their first "lives" they cared deeply for each other but it didn't go deep enough/or it wasn't shared xD pick. In the second life Mo Yuan was reincarnated as Ye Hua(like Dong Hua was reincarnated into a human for his "trial" *COUGH* I swear Dong Hua was Wen Chang in that world xD Feng Jiu's destined love already happened? Anyway...) while Bai Qian's powers were sealed and she became human for her trial(HER  high god trial, HIS trial for resurection/doesn't it just make more sense that Ye Hua ultimately gives Mo Yuan cultivation? Just Me?)In this second life, this is where they fall in love without the burdens of their past lives holding them back, ultimately, it ends in tragedy...both because Su Su dies, and because Ye Hua ends up dying THE SAME WAY AS Mo Yuan! OMG. Honestly, the whole twin thing is soooo cliche! Mo Yuan SHOULD have woken up AFTER Ye Hua's death, WITH his memories of his trial, and THEN Bai Qian should have remembered everything, and from there they could have started the third lifetime together, the...HAPPY ENDING. A-Li ofc, wouldn't be entirely abandoned, but he wouldn't be exactly their son, the same way Ye Hua wasn't exactly Hao De's biological grandson, but HE could be names the new crown prince that HEAVEN orcastrated by making Mo Yuan and Bai Qian go through their trials, the price for their lives together from Heaven could have been to create the TRUE crown prince of Heaven, who is, also, biologically conected to Heavenly Father, Mo Yuan/Ye Hua's father.
Normally I would just let it go, but this funny video I saw made me need to justify us shippers. :3 Also...I think the video maker doesn’t understand Mo Yuan’s character at when making this video. Sad! But honestly, Mo Yuan would have fought tooth and nail for her. Mo Yuan says he isn’t afraid what people think because he is mature, not childish of privlidged :l Ye Hua cared way too much what people think. Mo Yua would have said he loved Su Su just like that and he would have fought for her against all odds(at worst case senario he would die WITH HER like how Bai Qian wanted to live or die with HIM)...Ye Hua...to me he was like the Mo Yuan before he became the god of war.
Also, I do know about Bodhe Fate(Mo Yuan and Shao Wan’s story) and because I like this pairing I’m sticking to it. xD I don’t dislike Shao Wan, and I still support the author, but I can never see him with anyone else. Perhaps this story can be of the past before Shao Wan died, then I can accept it, but not as a present/future pairing. It would be awesome if maybe Bai Qian was a reincarnation of Shao Wan too, but Dong Hua said immortals don’t reincarnate...ofc he could be wrong. He reincarnated as a human, Mo Yuan SHOULD have reincarnated as Ye Hua...*sigh* thinking about what could have been is like enjoying your favorite food dish and realizing when it's too late to change anything that you forgot a good ingredient that would have made it better.

Finished tmopb
Got a lot of thoughts
But mostly - Ye Hua’s arm suddenly being mobile again in the fight with Qing Cang is kind of a weird plot development that should’ve gotten explained, since him losing an arm was a big freaking deal
Second, in a world where Bai Qian just stayed in the mortal realm and Ye Hua really was dead, I think her and Yan Zhi could’ve had a little family and a happy life. I’m glad Yan Zhi and her kid are okay
Now like 3rd... everyone’s gonna like or dislike things differently. For me... a lot of tmopb’s writing was weak, only solid 40-60% of the time, and most of what makes it Great is the memorable characters, the VERY SOLID acting that makes them more than their writing, and the world building is distinct enough that it feels solidly it’s own thing even though there’s many ‘immortals’ dramas out there. For me it’s like.. a 6.5/10... but it is relatively enjoyable to watch. There are probably much better shows, that I just can’t get interested in.
I do think.. the Untamed was eons better written (in terms of a coherent theme, the moral of the story being clear, the villains being nuanced and human and the heroes being flawed and a vast array of characters falling into an interesting grey zone, in terms of so much carrying logically through the plot). I even think the drama Guardian was better written (the side case of the weeks are relatively weak, but they SOLIDLY nail the themes of the show, parallel the main relationship, and help reinforce the main plot and main ideas of the story and help the characters grow, all the characters grow logically with perhaps the villains being a weak point but their actors definitely doing a lot to humanize and layer those villains to a degree - except maybe The purple hair guy, the romantic plots being logical and rational because of character motivations/world situation/pasts).
I did manage to FINISH watching 58 episodes, so clearly there’s good parts to tmopb. I definitely think the actors play a HUGE role in how easy it is to attach to the characters. The plot though... sometimes foreshadowed well, and sometimes felt like it just wrote in a sudden “tragedy/conflict” or wrote in a sudden “fix it” and those parts are annoying because there’s no foreshadowing or pay off of hard work. Bai Qian stopping Qing Cang has payoff, she worked 70k years to be strong enough to do it. Most things Fengjiu does have payoff, she works to accomplish them. The golden lotus becoming Ye Hua feels good and has payoff, and his romance up into meeting Su Su makes total sense for him and feels satisfying to watch. Mo Yuan returning feels good because it’s all building up to that. Even Ji Ling fighting his dad feels good, because at least it makes sense for his hopeless character to try and do that one last thing. Zhi Yan mostly feels good, because her arcs are rational responses to the situations she’s experienced. Even the villains Su Jin and Xuan Nu the ghost empress - the writing just paints them as totally wholly evil, but the actresses did very well with the limited portrayal to make their characters make sense. Xuan Nu is absolutely awful but by the end of it I understand WHY she did all that she did, and she’s tragic because I don’t think she could be herself and ever have a Happier ending. Likewise for Su Jin. Bai Qian also, her actress did a phenomenal job - while what HAPPENS to Bai Qian I sometimes hated (just the Suddenly written dramas happening to her, the Sudden misunderstandings, etc) her Responses at least were logical for the character, and at least when Bai Qians stubbornness was the cause of drama it made logical sense given the character.
So I think the writings strong point was characters and motivations. I think it’s Weak points was overall plot. Overall plot, there were so many “oh no this X problem suddenly appears!” And “ONLY bad stuff HAPPENS to Ji Ling, regardless of if it could turn out alright if due to his actual efforts” and “oh Ye Hua is the main character so of course he can’t die!”
In the last episodes, I thought Ye Hua’s arms suddenly both working meant he was really MO YUAN in that fight - finally finishing off Qing Cang for good, leaving Bai Qian in a way she wouldn’t be able to stop so she couldn’t kill herself to save him, and so he could keep both her and Ye Hua safe so they could be happy. It would have been TRAGIC, don’t get me wrong. But Mo Yuan working on letting go of his love of Bai Qian, his tendency to protect her, his tendency to protect others and self sacrifice, and his many duties could have CULMINATED in that ending for him. It would have been bittersweet, but hopeful. It would have made Sense. Instead... Mo Yuan isn’t even in the fight. Bai Qian doesn’t even get a CHANCE to fight (and there’s no explanation about how weak af Ye Hua got a rope to bound Bai Qian that NO ONE STRONGER THAN HIM COULD BREAK? or how his arm worked again! Or how he suddenly was super strong! - can you blame me for thinking it was Mo Yuan in disguise?!). Also the end fight was annoying because Bai Qians character 100% would both fight, and attempt at any chance to help Ye Hua and keep him alive. To tie her out was lazy writing and an insult to her character throughout the entire length of the show.
Why Fengjius romance comes off as more palatable for me? Well for one, Fengjiu is both significantly weaker/more immature than Bai Qian so when she needs help it’s logical. And two, when she chooses to fight she is generally allowed to fight by the plot. In the final battle? She gets to do at least one thing, despite being among the weaker people there. She has one skill she can contribute, and is allowed to contribute (and the skill is something people from Qing Qiu generally would plausibly know given that multiple people from Qing Qiu have used this skill prior in the plot). Dijun barely fights, but it’s been established he’s weakened by prior events when he went against fate trying to do that mortal romance - and the final battle doesn’t magically make him all powerful again. He’s helpless, as is basically Fengjiu, and the only struggle is if they want to try and die together or try to keep each other alive. It’s all logical. And follows the steady arc of their characters. But Bai Qian at that point is mega experienced, and literally the MOST QUALIFIED to fight Qing Cang after Mo Yuan. It’s why Dijun sent someone to get her. So the fact she sits out the entire fight is super disappointing.
Overall, I liked all the main characters. I hated how one dimensional the villains were depicted especially given their relatively logical backstories and motivations. I hated that the plot just kind of used Ji Ling as SUFFERING DEFINITION Tm, and kind of randomly hit minor characters and Ye Hua and Bai Qian with random sudden drama/miracles that didn’t have to do with foreshadowing or characterization so much as to “create more drama in the moment.”
I am... hoping The Pillow Book has a decent plot, if it’s as solid as Dijun/Fengjiu are written in tmopb. I dread that it will be plagued with as much sudden miracles/curses as Bai Qian/Ye Hua’s story was dragged down by. There’s a lot of good in the tmopb story. But there’s a lot of... “fluff” in terms of unnecessary moments, or deux ex machins moments that could have been written in much more logical and foreshadowed manners. Especially since SOME of the writing was well developed, logical, foreshadowed, and evolved beautifully. So it’s all the more annoying that other parts are so sloppy that it feels like they were just shoved in to try and artificially heighten the angst or miraculousness. When the story... had a premise that’s tragic and moving enough, if the writing had just STUCK to that core and delved into it deeper.
I still think a better ending would be Mo Yuan pretending to be Ye Hua, fighting Qing Cang. Then Ye Hua and Bai Qian together finally, grieving him, and realizing the way he might have suffered in hindsight was like They’d experienced at different points, like Bai Qian in the canon recognized about her and Ji Ling, like so many characters in the story do. Then the moral could have been relationships like Bai Qians/Ye Hua’s, compared to those like Zi Lan/Yan Zhe, and compared to those like Dijun/Fengjiu, and compared to Mo Yuan/Bai Qian and Ji Ling/Si Ming. How there are many ways to love: selfish harmful ways like Su Jin and Xuan Nu loved; sacrificing romance to truly save or help those you love like Mo Yuan to bai Qian and Zi Lan to Yan Zhi; love where no matter how you love the circumstances are just not possible like Fengjiu/Dijun, and love where you can find a way to hit those same difficulties and still be able to be with each other like Bai Qian/Ye Hua’s. That would be a nice way to conclude the theme of love and romances in tmopb, and to contrast and parallel all the main stories and character arcs nicely. But the ending we got... is not quite as solid to me. Still okay. But... I. Might have written it differently.
