Your favorite bakery had been out of croissants for three weeks now. Every time you visited the shop and saw there were none left, you walked out feeling blue. The problem was the store sold out of them so fast in the morning and you were not an early riser.

One late morning you were walking home grumbling about life being unfair when Lucien saw you and stopped you.

"What's wrong?" He spoke with a gentle laugh. He thought your pouting was adorable.

"I never get up early enough to get a croissant from the bakery." You mumbled to the male and kept on walking to your home.

A grin grew on his face and a plan started to form in his mind.

The next morning you went to the bakery and instead of hearing bad news, you got the best news ever.

"We have three croissants saved for you." The baker told you, "They've already been paid for as well. Have a nice day!"

Your eyes grew wide with joy and you took the pastries. There was only one person who knew about your misfortune and you knew you had to thank him.

A little while later you were sitting in the library researching when Lucien entered. You saw him and your whole face lit up, remembering what he did for you.

"Oh my, what have I done to deserve such a beautiful smile?" Lucien pondered.

"I know it was you. Thank you, it made my entire week so much better." You exclaimed!

"I'll make sure you have fresh goods every morning if it means your smile will be directed at me." He purred.

A blush took over your face and you looked down, flustered. You cleared your throat and looked back up at the red-haired male.

"Well, I have to get back to my work but I wanted my appreciation known." You said gently.

He bowed his head slightly in acknowledgment and you stood on your toes. Before you could stop yourself, you placed a kiss on his cheek. It was Lucien's turn to blush and become flustered now.

You went back to your seat in the library and Lucien was still standing there, fingers touching where your lips met his skin. If he wasn't madly in love with you before, he definitely was now.

The Sims 1 Easy Careers

Here's a mod I made for personal usage some time ago, rerelease news motivated me to finally finish it. Installation instructions included in the .txt file. Doesn't affect Fame career (there's only this).

There are two versions; one include replacement Art career, one with the original Entertainment.

Note about different languages: This mod was build for USEnglish, but it should work with others as well. Things that won't work include: modifications to level titles (and numbers), descriptions and career names. Art career isn't localized, so choose Entertainment version. This note probably also applies to UKEnglish. See note about chance cards under the cut.

"Standardized" salary and working hours. All sims now work from 8AM to 3PM, children now come home an hour later at 4PM. Each level now adds §100 to overall salary, because I was lazy with that one I wanted equality. Level 10 now pays only §1000, so this whole mod isn't too overpowered

Aight so I've been working on the boys backstory and I did this really quick

Soooo here's where Blade, Brandy, and Bone came from, and also who their mother is!

TLDR: The boys were originally going to be the poster children and first ever sales for a Limited Edition run of "Powerpuff Girlz XTREME" where instead of having a Powerpuff girl you had a boy, they were created by a worker who wanted their own children, however Dick had seen them and planned to sell them because he was only thinking about the profit he could turn. They were fortunately never cloned and survived the destruction of the abandoned factory in the end of Knock It Off by hiding in the packaging and being sent to Townsville, buuuuut got accidentally dumped in an alley way.

That's where they met Marie Q. Rei, their adopted mother! Who was working the graveyard shift at a local restaurant and taking out the trash. She met the boys and ever since she's loved them as her own sons, raising them in a comfortable home and giving them as much love as possible.

Blade, Brandy, and Bone chose their names since neither Dick or their creator had named them.

A Legitimate Question

You know how in X2, you can go on a sidequest to retrieve Zero's body parts to prevent him from being rebuilt and brainwashed by Sigma & Friends? Well, here's something I don't quite understand about that:

Why is Zero's head detached from his torso?

No, seriously. Why is that? When he self-destructs back in X1, his head and torso are still connected:

This is the case in Maverick Hunter X as well:

Now that we've established that Zero's head was originally still attached, we need to figure out why on Earth the Three Stooges X-Hunters would change that. For what I can tell, there are two potential reasons:

Something Happened to Zero's Head, Meaning That it Had to Be Repaired Separately This is definitely a possibility. Homeboy was not doing well after self-destructing. He couldn't even open his eyes, he was in so much pain. And by the looks of it, his self-repair systems were pulling an X5 and not responding. If you told me that he concussed himself, or damaged some important part of his brain, I'd believe it. ...but at the same time, he literally blew his legs and one of his arms off. It is far more likely that the amount of pain he's in, as well as his self-repair systems not functioning, is a result of his extensive damage instead, much like what happened in X5. Not only that, but his head could've been repaired while still remaining connected to his torso. There's also the possibility that Zero's control chip would have to be inserted between his head and torso, hence why the head is removed. But if that's the case, why does X need all three of Zero's parts? Why not stop at the head and torso, if that's all that's needed? Couldn't Dr. Cain just cobble together some new legs? He's a smart man. I believe in him. So that leaves us with reason number two:

They're Screwing With X Think about it for a second. We know that the X-Hunters wanted to use Zero's parts as bait, so that they would have a chance to fight X and potentially stop him from getting any further in taking out the mavericks. However, they could've easily done this with his arm parts instead of his head if they wanted to, right? But here's the thing: Serges is a mad scientist. Agile is a spy and strategist. Violen is... a regular jerk, I guess (I have no idea what his role on the team is). But the point is that these people know that X beating them is a possibility, and they are going to go out of their way to make it as hard as possible, simply because of who they are. They aren't dueling him for who gets custody rights over Zero out of the nonexistent kindness in their hearts, or in the name of fairness. Think of it like this: if you were an X-Hunter, what would be the easiest way to mess with the guy that's ruining all your plans, while also making his potential victory over you as painful as possible? The answer is simple. Give him the severed head of his best friend before running away. Not only could he not kill you, but he also gets a gruesome reminder of just how dead his bestie is. Oh, and be sure to tell him that this isn't the last he'll be seeing of you:

So, what can we gather from all this? What's the big takeaway? Here's what I think: Dr. Light may have built X to be a peacekeeper, but that doesn't mean he's a pushover. He's got some serious mental fortitude on him. Sure, he retires in between X6 and X7. But honestly? If it were me, I would've hit the bricks a while ago. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't have even gone out to the highway back in X1. I would've been trying to figure out how to get out of the country as fast as possible, just so I wouldn't have to deal with whatever the mavericks were up to that week. But X? He takes those mavericks out, no questions asked. He fights the same dude eight times (ten, if we count Sigma's appearances in the Xtreme titles). He even comes out of retirement, just because he gets inspired by how much Zero and the random kid he brought home care about helping people. And he does all this despite hating fighting more than anything else. And you know what? I can respect that. (This essay was partially inspired by this post.)

Regulus teaches them how to bowl! She's an expert on fun and games.

I HC Vertin with random, unrelated skill sets like fishing, games, and other such things. Stuff she picked up while traveling. She doesn't know much about sports but she appreciates games like ping-pong, mini-golf (but has zero interest in real golf), and arcade style games. She catches on pretty quickly despite it being her first time. She helps teach the others once she gets the hang of it.

Sonetto breaks the ceiling because she threw the ball up by accident.

Lilya is a menace. The ball slams the pins so hard people next to them are like 😮 . Perfect Strikes everytime. She and Bunny Bunny are engaged in some friendly competition.

Dessert Flannel tries to bargain with the concession stand to lower their prices. Blonney just buys one of everything without thought when that doesn't work, making Desert remember she has rich friends now lol. Horrorpedia and Jess help them finish everything.

Yeni was completely out of her depth but willing to learn. Vertin offered to teach her. While Vertin was showing Yenisei what form she should take. "You're doing great, Yen." They heard a crash. That's when Sonetto accidentally hurled the ball into the ceiling. She was used to seeing Vertin being hands-on with people but she never heard her use a pet name before.

Apple was more into the beer than bowling but he kept an eye on the crew...but why are there two Captains? He needs more eyes and beers...

X keeps cheating with his Goldberg Arcane skills. It doesn't matter though because he still doesn't win lol. Just basing this off of Xtreme Talents where he introduces a new invention during his arcanist ability explanation and it alway goes wrong. He can't win! John Titor though? The goat.

I wonder if Japanese view the Paramount Sonic movies the way anime fans view Hollywood adaptations of anime starring white people. Maybe they don't turn out for these films because they don't see them as Sonic movies, but as American Sonic movies

Might be. It's worth noting that they do seem to be reviewed pretty decently in Japan, generally between 3.5-4 stars. So people who've watched the movie like it. It's just that not a lot of people are turning out for it in theaters.

(Incidentally, its Japanese title is Sonic X Shadow: Tokyo Mission in a clearly cynical marketing attempt to overemphasize Tokyo's importance to the story of the film despite it only being the setting for the first act.)

So the people going to see these movies in Japan have a good time with them. It's just that not a lot of people are making it over the "Hmm, that could be interesting" hurdle to begin with.

I think it's worth noting that even in the games, Sonic usually doesn't sell as well in Japan as in the West. To my understanding, he's more of a niche interest. It's Americans who mainly went gaga for Sonic as the "Xtreme Kool guy with ATTITUDE" alternative to "kiddy Mario".

So, home country or not, I guess it's not super surprising a character with a niche fandom who shares screentime with rural Montana family drama isn't a huge seller in Japan.

Still, though.

He opened lower than Kraven.

That's just hurtful. ;_;

[Review] Sonic R (PS2)

Peak Saturn vibes.

I’ve now got much more Sonic experience under my belt. I’m thrilled that I can now have informed opinions about the series! But now it’s time to play some spinoffs from over the years that I’ve always meant to try out. First up is the franchise’s first racing game… that people really like (the Game Gear had the two Drift games but it doesn’t seem like they made much of an impact).

British studio Traveller’s Tales had proved themselves with the isometric game Sonic 3D Blast so Sega commissioned them for an original title for the Saturn. As it turned out this would be Sonic’s only full new game on the system as the highly anticipated 3D debut Xtreme never came to be, and the only other titles were a 3D Blast conversion, the Mega Drive compilation Sonic Jam, and a cameo in Christmas Nights. I played the version included in the Sonic Gems Collection on PS2, which is based on the enhanced PC port.

Sonic R is an unconventional racing game in that, while it still plays not unlike a standard kart racer, many of the characters are on foot, and the game includes platforming and exploration elements. While I’ve played other games that include some of these ingredients like Rayman Arena, Beetle Adventure Racing, and arguably Sonic Rivals, the mix is intoxicating here, helped by excellent track design and immaculate vibes.

Rather than multi-track cups, you just play each track on its own. Well, there's only five tracks total and one is unlockable (a consequence of a quick development turnaround) so it makes sense. You can go for first place but the more satisfying goal is learning all the side paths and shortcuts. These dense little environments, designed by Sonic Team, have depth to make up for their paucity, and finding their secrets (in the form of tokens and Chaos Emeralds) unlocks new racers and the final Rainbow Road-esque track which is more a victory lap to speed around with your overpowered unlocks. Rings scattered around can be paid to open doors or enhance your boosts, and item tokens can help a bit but there's nothing as unbalanced as your typical Mario Kart game.

The racers have an interesting amount of variance to their stats. For instance, Tails is slippery and nimble while the Egg Robo has much more inertia. Sonic double jumps, Knuckles can glide, Robotnik in his hoverpod can shoot homing projectiles (they're not very debilitating), while Amy uniquely drives a car(!) which funnily enough is relatively slow but gets a boost on cooldown. Along with Metal Sonic, R introduces new counterparts in the form of Metal Knuckles and the fan-favourite Tails Doll. I would have liked to see them go all-out with even more characters but it's a decent selection and acts as a pretty good send-off to the Classic era before the characters got redesigned in Adventure. These low-poly renditions are just adorable!

Another way of remixing the racetracks is a weather system that changes the lighting and conditions. It makes the inevitable replays that much fresher, and of course the smooth tunes will draw you in as well. Veteran composer Richard Jacques nails it with a catchy Eurobeat mix, each track accompanied wonderfully by vocals from TJ Davis. It's a transportive soundtrack that gives the game a singular feel; this is truly what video games were made for. I was shocked to learn that this game's music is considered divisive! It's great!

Anyway, I had a breeze with this one. I did turn the difficulty to easy so I could focus on the exploratory aspects without worrying too much about winning (you do need to place well to keep the emeralds and unlocks), and I have no shame. Sonic R is a lovely little treat. This is Sega at its best: experimental, collaborating with international partners, and with vibes off the charts. Also, the framerate is rock solid which I've learned is never a guarantee with Sonic games. I know that later British-developed Sonic racing games are also excellent, but in between I still need to investigate the Riders series of hoverboard racers. Until then!
