Lately I’ve been thinking a lot and seeing a lot of posts about how rare pair/crack ship friendly the SVSSS fandom is, and I really love it a lot, but half of the ships are Shen Yuan’s wifebeam working overtime (and I eat it up every time lol). I’d like to throw out some more that I’ve either seen a couple times and would like to see more of, or popped into my head like an intrusive thought and I’d like to see if there’s anything there.

Shen Jiu/Tianlang-Jun: I’ve seen this one the most, and it’s the one I feel works pretty well. SJ is definitely TLJ’s type, he likes them strong, pretty, and mean. And SJ needs his man to be a full time simp for him.

Luo Binghe/Yue Qingyuan: I’m not very hyped about this one, both of these guys are just so obsessed with their canon love interests it’s strange to think them with anyone else. But maybe it would be interesting to see two guys trying to attic wife each other, and YQY is the only other character I think would have the patience for LBH and be willing to provide the level of doting and reassurance that he requires. And you know that YQY has a soft spot for feral pretty boys that he can provide for.

Liu Qingge/Gongyi Xiao: Alright, I don’t really have an explanation for this one, but it feels like something

Mobei-Jun/Zhuzhi-Lang: ZZL is ready to be a supportive subordinate, but he’s also strong enough to be the one protecting MBJ. This one would be very bodyguardxprincess, and I think there’d be something to play with with the whole ice demon and cold blooded snake thing.

Shang Qinghua/Mu Qingfang: This one I’m just basing off of the energy of a small dog with anxiety being friends with a bigger, very calm dog. MQF can monitor SQH’s stress levels, and SQH can optimize Qian Cao’s inventory system. Productivity power couple.

Ning Yingying/Qi Qingqi: This one is based on nothing but my confidence that it could be cute. I think given the chance, NYY could be just as persistent as LBH and she’d be hilariously dorky trying to pursue an older woman. And QQQ can rage at SQQ for running a peak full of MILF hunting disciples, while SQQ gets offended at being called a MILF.

Ming Fan/Yang Yixuan: This is basically mini SQQ/LQG, but somewhere in between Liushen and Liujiu.

I stand by none of this, I have the integrity of a graham cracker in the rain. But I’d probably give any of these ships a shot out of curiosity.

Xiao Xingchen has gotten odd dreams, nightmares really, his entire life. At first they were normal — just more of what his life was like as a child. Then they got worse, after he began training as a cultivator. It was only as an adult that he started being afraid, not because of what happened to him in those dreams, but because of what that version of him did. He killed, conquered, tortured, and built a harem of a hundred women. His master tells him that they may be memories of a past life, one so strong that it’s leaking over to his next incarnation. He tries not to think about the dreams after that — doesn’t it mean this life is a chance to make up for the bad karma of his first, to become a righteous cultivator and help people? He manages to ignore them for a while — until he meets Xue Yang who looks at him with eyes that are all too familiar from his dreams of torture and a prison cell surrounded by falling acid.

I finished rereading SVSSS Volume 2 and was focusing more on the story this time, because I remember Volume 1 best, so I didn’t really stop to post about it. A random assortment of thoughts in no particular order:

Gongyi Xiao is the Bestest Boy. I remembered him being good, but reading it again was like, “Awwwww, buddy.” Poor guy. He deserved more!

Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe are such a mess in this volume. It’s like two people trying to play chess against each other but they’re somehow using two different boards for it. No one wants to be playing this game! But everyone keeps insisting on it while crying and boards are getting flipped! (I guess in this metaphor, Zhuzhi-Lang is eating the pieces when no one is looking.)

The sower demons are genuinely creepy.

I want to call Luo Binghe’s invasion of Cang Qiong a clown show, but that would be an insult to clowns. Moshang have such limited appearances in the main story, but they are ridiculous.

Sha Hualing having a Bad Guy Lair is really funny. I forgot about that.

Over the course of this volume, Shen Yuan suggests that Liu Qingge is asexual and then suggests that Luo Binghe is asexual (before figuring out that Luo Binghe is into him). But he’s definitely an ordinary straight guy, for sure!

Every time Sha Hualing loses her top (which is... at least three times... I think?), Shen Yuan mentally censors her breasts. I didn’t forget this because I see people mention it periodically, but I forgot just how funny it is.

Shen Yuan scheming to get Liu Qingge to take on Yang Yixuan as a disciple was really cute, actually. He’s such a softie. He just wants to be nice!

When he’s talking about Liu Qingge’s lack of disciples at the very beginning of the volume, Shen Yuan describes how Bai Zhan works, and the phrasing kind of suggests that Bai Zhan changes peak lords every time that a Bai Zhan disciple bests their shizun. It does not work like this, but it would be kind of funny if the other peaks are strictly following some cycle to choose the next generation of peak lords and Bai Zhan is just switching peak lords whenever.

I don’t forget this trait because it’s one of my favorite things about him, but I’m always struck rereading by how quiet and thoughtful Luo Binghe can be. He gets extremely attached to Shen Qingqiu in Volume 1 and he’s dealing with severe mental and emotional instability throughout Volume 2, but Luo Binghe is often reserved or somber or even cold when not dealing with Shen Qingqiu.

Binghe really just took over Huan Hua Palace and says that the Old Palace Master has gone “traveling”. Yeah, he’s doing some wandering cultivation. It’s like a vacation. Don’t worry about it. :) The Little Palace Mistress is clearly becoming impatient with this excuse and I’m betting that the number of people at Huan Hua Palace who 100% believe the excuse is very, very low.

Shen Yuan returning in the plant body only to have to listen to how he’s become gossip fodder is funny. But Liu Mingyan going, “Ah, that’s how it is,” and then proceeding to write the Resentment of Chunshan is even funnier. Shen Yuan is in the middle of being kidnapped by Zhuzhi-Lang and suddenly has to listen to a song about him and Binghe fucking all the time. Zhuzhi-Lang desperately trying not to lose his shit laughing in the background is my favorite part of this scene. Shen Yuan’s horror at least works well as a distraction!

Also, I love that Shen Yuan went, “You have money? I want women,” and Zhuzhi-Lang just went with it. It’s so obviously an escape plan to the readers. Zhuzhi-Lang probably also suspects that something is up. He’s not an idiot. But maybe a part of him is accustomed to absurd demands from Tianlang-Jun and kind of views “Hey, let’s go check out what music the brothels are playing now!” as a normal desire for people to express?

It’s tempting to write fics in which Shen Yuan just gives the false jade pendant back immediately. Do I think it would automatically fix everything? Nope! But it sure would be fun to watch the characters spin.

I came across my SVSSS Xi Yang Yang AU again and I love the idea so much because it’s mashing two series I love together, but also it’s pretty…cringey. 😂

I know, I know; embrace the cringe and cringe culture is dead and all that… But it’s so random and I am still very much alive so can’t help it if I get embarrassed haha. I thought I’d share a “preview” of some of the designs anyway—at least before I can overthink it any further or regret it and delete it—but yeah!

Weibo Night recap: Friendly faces

Weibo Night gave us a few sweet interactions between Xiao Zhan and his collegues. It's a long evening, so I think it's always nice for the star guests to meet some known & friendly faces. 🙂

First there are some adorable interactions between Xiao Zhan and Yang Zi. The two stars of The Oath of Love had been Weibo King and Queen for Weibo Night 2019 and 2020. This time, they met when going up to the stage at the end of the ceremony, tried to let other people stand in the center of the stage and failed, and eventually left together when the group shot and confetti rain was over.

Xiao Zhan also had some cute little interactions with Ayunga. At Weibo Night, Xiao Zhan greeted Ayunga, who was sitting behind him, with a smile, and later congratulate him when Ayunga went towards the stage to receive an award. Both of them have been on Our Song s1.

There was also a short moment between Xiao Zhan and Zhang Ruoyun when both went on stage to collect their awards. Both of them have been in Joy of Life s1.

Introducing: The Which MXTX Character Was/Would Be Most Insufferable Online Tournament Bracket

Beginning the evening of August 23rd, 2024 (USA time), I’ll be running a tournament via tumblr polls to determine once and for all which Mo Xiang Tong Xiu web novel character was or would be most insufferable if given access to the internet.

Why this poll theme?

I thought it would be fun to run another big MXTX tournament bracket, since the bugpoll last year was a blast, and this was the funniest theme I could manage to think of.

Why isn't Shen Yuan/Shen Qingqiu in the bracket?

Given what we know about our dear Peerless Cucumber, I fear an SQQ sweep would be a foregone conclusion if I included him. Therefore, after the bracket finds a winner, I'll hold a bonus round and pit the winner against Shen Yuan to determine the true most internet-insufferable character.

What is wrong with you?

Yeah.

My goal is to hold one round per day every day for a week, but I'm contending with a full-time work schedule, so things may get slightly more stretched out than that. I'll also be splitting the first round into Round 1 Part 1 (the left side of the bracket) and Round 1 Part 2 (the right side of the bracket) to avoid spamming people's dashes with 32 separate polls in one day.
