Chapter 3

Warnings: Angst, Main Character Death

Copyright: I do not own any Marvel characters or locations. However, I do own a few OCs like Elizabeth, Katherine, Stacy, and Jessie. I do not condone any copying of this.

A week went by without song. You wondered where Elizabeth was. A guard had come in a few days after that, handing you the little girl.

She was wearing a pink bodysuit to keep her warm. Her eyes were closed, little lashes framing against her cheeks. Her hair was a dark black colour and when she opened her eyes, they were the same shade as Hogun's. Her skin was light, her eyes slightly oval shaped just like her father.

When she cried, you sang one of the two songs that Elizabeth had sung to her. It calmed her down just enough for her to go to sleep.

Your fed her from your nub and you felt somewhat content taking care of her. At least she was safe.

But where was her mother?

By the third month you were showing. You were pregnant. And as you hadn't been with anyone since the bombs had gone off, you could only assume it was one of your soulmates.

Fury's butterfly was no longer flickering and had settled back into red. You were glad he was safe, though you were wondering where your soulmates were. You wondered why it was taking them so long to find you.

Suddenly, your peaceful afternoon was interrupted by blazing guns and shouts.

You stayed sitting where you were, holding the baby girl close to your chest. You heard whooshing sounds and mechanical sounds.

Very slowly, you created a glowing green knife to hover in the air, pointed at the door. You were not going to let anything happen to the precious child in your arms. You had to reunite her with her mother.

Suddenly, the door fell open. You sent the knife flying before you even saw who it was. Luckily, Loki dodged out of the way, landing in front of you in a crouch.

"My Queen." He whispered, breaking the chains off of you.

"Lokes." You whispered, tears building up in your eyes.

"Come here my Queen." He said, opening his arms. You leaned forward, letting him hug you tightly before you got to your feet. He took your hand, "Stay close to me."

He led you out of the room, running down the hallway. It was awkward running without your arms, one hand holding the little girl, the other holding Loki's hand tightly.

The three of you found yourselves back where the fighting was thick. Loki sent knives into the back of HYDRA agents. You could see all of your soulmates fighting except for Fury. Good, you were glad he had stayed home.

"Doll!" Bucky shouted, shooting another agent through his head. Loki handed you off to him. Bucky wrapped his metal arm around your waist, dragging you past everyone.

"Where's Elizabeth?" You gasped between breaths as he shot more agents, getting you out of the compound.

"I don't know. Pietro and Hogun are looking for her right now." Bucky called over all of the shooting.

You glanced around, noticing just how many people were in the hallways. A definite mixture of HYDRA and what was left of SHIELD. Your soulmates were busy getting SHIELD to back up and retreat now that you were safe.

"We have it set so that the whole place will blow in five minutes." Tony said through his Iron Man suit as you all grouped outside. He stepped out of the suit, pulling you into a hug which you awkwardly returned as you still hadn't put her daughter down. "Fuck I missed you so much gorgeous."

"I missed all of you too." you mumbled, clinging to Tony, tears falling down your face.

"Get her somewhere safe." Tony commanded and you looked up to see that Stephen had come over. Stephen pulled you into a tight hug.

"But where's Elizabeth?" You asked, wiping tears away as Stephen got ready to make a portal.

"We're thinking. . . maybe the freezers." Stephen said softly. "Unless they buried her."

You just stared at him. "The freezers?"

Stephen's face fell, "Y/N. . . Elizabeth. . . she died two weeks ago."

You just stared at him, the orange portal flickering out of the corner of your eye. The baby girl started to move in your arms, blinking up at a blue sky that she had never seen before. And the next thing you knew, your eyes were rolling back into your head and you passed out.

"Give her time." Stephen's voice commanded as you came to. You could sense that you were in a more open room with bright lights. There was air-conditioning as well.

You felt clean. Your skin felt washed and shaved. Your hair felt light and fluffy.

"Do we know who the child is?" Steve asked, worry in his voice.

"Thor is still back at the compound cleaning up with Loki and T'Challa." Clint answered. "He'll tell us when he gets back I'm sure."

"You don't think they raped her, right?" Clint sounded worried.

"Anythings possible with HYDRA." Bucky sounded disgusted.

"No." you mumbled, still feeling tired, "No, it's definitely one of yours. They never touched me. I just sat in that cell and ate food. That's it."

"Hey." Stephen's voice was soft, "How are you feeling."

Blinking your eyes open, you found they were already filled with tears. "E-Elizabeth? S-She's gone?"

"Yes." Steve said softly, coming over to sit on the edge of the bed, taking your hand. He had dark circles under his eyes, his blond hair was a mess. He was still in his Captain America uniform which was splattered with blood stains. His shield was laying on the chair, blood spatter all across the outer rim. "I'm sorry."

"What about her daughter?" You asked, sitting up, "Where is she?"

"Hogun's with her right now." Steve answered. "He wanted to know if she ever named her."

You choked back another sob, wishing you knew more about her time there. "If she did, I don't know her name. She wasn't even allowed to see her daughter for a week after. . . and then they gave her to me to take care of. I never called her anything, I always thought Elizabeth would. . . get to name her."

You broke back down into tears.

Sam put his arms around you, hugging you tightly.

You quickly wiped your face, trying to be strong, "Where are Lucy, Marcel, and Vincent?"

"They're fast asleep." Steve said, "Do you want us to go and get them?"

"Let them sleep. I'll see them when they're awake." You said. "How are they?"

"They've missed you." Sam mumbled into your ear. "Stacy kept them fed since they refused formula."

"But how are you feeling?" Stephen asked urgently, "Are you hungry? Thirsty? What happened there?"

"I'm okay." You said. "Nothing happened. They said they only wanted Elizabeth and they'd let me go after. . . well they never said what the after was. They only wanted her. . ."

There was a knock at the door and you looked over. You were in the hospital wing, the same one as when you had been kidnapped what felt like years ago by TYPHON and your wrist sliced open.

Hogun stepped in, along with Pietro, Vision, and Wanda. He was holding the baby in his arms, "Can we have a private word with Elizabeth?" He asked thickly, his brown-black eyes rimmed red. You had never seen Hogun look so destroyed.

"Not private." Steve said. "I'll stay." He nodded to the others who slowly filed out of the room.

"Did she. . . did she name her?" Hogun asked thickly, motioning to the baby girl in his arms.

You shook your head, "I don't know. I'm sorry."

Hogun just nodded.

Wanda stepped forward, "May I hold her, please?"

Hogun looked at her and then rather reluctantly handed her over. Wanda closed her eyes, hands glowing red slightly. Wanda opened her eyes as the redness faded. "Elizabeth was deciding between Luna and Minerva. She wanted to wait though for you to help her choose a name." Wanda said softly, handing the baby girl over to Hogun again.

Hogun's eyes teared up again and he took in a shuddering breath. "Was there anything you could've done?"

You blinked, "I-"

"Tell me." Hogun pleaded and Pietro quickly took the baby from his arms. "You got all of these traits from your soulmates, there had to be something you could've done! So you could've saved her!"

Thor and Loki entered the room at that moment, pausing in the doorway upon seeing Hogun by your bedside.

"That's enough." Steve commanded, moving to the other side of the bed.

"I'm sorry." You said. "She was one of my best friends. I'm sorry. I wish I could've saved her. I had no idea. . . I didn't even know she was dead until Stephen told me after I was saved. I didn't know. . . I'm sorry."

Hogun's expression fell again, his face going into his hands. Thor strode forward, putting a kind hand on his shoulder, "I'm sorry friend. Come, you need sleep."

"I waited a thousand and seventy-three years for her." Hogun choked out. "And after one and a half fleeting years, she is gone. Why? What did I-"

"Come." Thor said gently, leading Hogun out of the room as your eyes teared up again.

Wanda kissed your forehead, "I'm sorry. Rest. Heal. We will take care of everyone from here."

You just nodded. Wanda carefully took the baby girl who was wide awake and looking rather upset into her arms.

Your bottom lip trembled as you were left in the room with Steve and Loki. You looked at Steve. "I could've gotten us out. I could've gotten us out after she had the baby. I could've. . . I could've used Loki's gift. I could've created a key to our doors. I could've gotten us out! It's my fault! Fuck why-"

"Shh." Steve said, wrapping his arms around you, pulling you into a much needed hug on both ends. "It's not your fault cookie."

You had missed that nickname so much. You sobbed into his shoulder.

Loki put a soft hand on your shoulder and after a few moments, you finally managed to lean back to look at him.

"It is not your fault my Queen. We are the ones that were unable to find you for so long." Loki admitted this with shame and Steve looked away, knowing it was hard enough for Loki to admit this with him there.

"How did you?" You asked.

Loki was silent for a long time before he said, "Two months after you were taken, Buster found a chip in the backyard. He brought it in and it was going to get thrown away, thinking it was junk. Luckily, Tony recognized it as a HYDRA chip. What I understood from his lengthy scientific monologue was that it was like an address chip. Unfortunately, there was quite a bit of damage to it along with dog slobber and rain. Tony worked day and night on it until he finally got it working two weeks later. Of course, he crashed for three whole days afterwards before he woke up to tell us how it worked. And then. . . and then Elizabeth. . ."

Loki actually choked on his words there, pausing, swallowing hard.

Elizabeth had been such a big part of your lives and you hadn't even realized it till now. She had affected everyone, living here.

Steve finished, "We managed to track down where you were a week ago. Unfortunately, there were so many defenses and. . . well we had to take them down one by one. It was a lengthy process and I'm sorry. I wish we could have. . . I wish we had. . . I'm sorry Y/N."

You shook your head, "I'm here. I'm safe. We're all-"

You choked on that. No, you were not all safe. "W-what happened to Fury?"

"He was in a coma for a while." Loki answered. "He's fine now. He'll want to see you soon, I'm sure."

"An- And Rhodey?" You whispered. "James."

"We buried him a week after." Steve whispered, squeezing your hand, "I'm sorry you couldn't be there. If you feel up to it, Tony and you can go to visit his grave tomorrow."

You nodded, tears coming to your eyes for what felt like the millionth time. "I wish I could've told him I loved him. But he- he died alone!"

Steve and Loki hugged you at the same time and you clung to them pathetically. You sobbed into their shoulders, wishing you could forget all of your pain. Wishing that you could be stronger for them, the way that you had promised James that you would in your cell at HYDRA.

One day. Maybe if you just had one proper day to mourn, things would be better after that.

Your time in the cells had been like time stopping. Nothing was real. Nothing continued. Now, you were continuing. One proper day to mourn and you would be alright.

"How was F.R.I.D.A.Y. compromised in the first place?" You sniffled, wiping your eyes and running nose.

Loki's face hardened, "The damn trash rat."

Steve sighed, "It was harmless, in hindsight. Rocket. . . he got into Tony's lab and messed with some equipment. It was just supposed to be a prank, see how long it took for the brilliant genius to realize all his passwords had been changed. . . but because of it, F.R.I.D.A.Y. was down so. . ."

"Tony did try to kill the thing." Loki said thoughtfully.

Steve glared at Loki, "Rocket feels terrible about it. More than terrible. He's absolutely appalled by what happened. It was just. . . "

"A freak accident." You finished in a whisper.

There was silence in the room.

"C-Can everyone come back in? And then um, Thor can tell us who the baby's father is?" You whispered.

"Sure." Steve said, hugging you tightly before kissing you again on the forehead. He moved out of the room, coming back with everyone.

Everyone sat around your bed, making sure they were touching you in someway. A hand on your shin, holding your hand. Sam was hugging you from behind again.

"They're twins." Thor said softly. His light was gone, a depressing gloom settled around him. You knew he was hurting for his friend of centuries. "Fraternal. One is Tony's. The others is Rhodey's."

You dissolved right back into tears.

I mean.

Not for nothing, I think: The other time we see someone blindfolded who puts their trust in someone else to lead them around, it's Xiao Xingchen - who maimed himself for Song Lan, similar to Jiang Cheng's willingness to give up his life for and ending up maimed for Wei Wuxian - trusting Xue Yang to lead him around, because he's literally blind to the danger the situation poses.

It's not the only time we see parallels between Wei Wuxian and Xue Yang, who is manifestly Weird About Xiao Xingchen.

And we see how well that ends for either Xiao Xingchen or Xue Yang.

I agree w/ some points u made in ur meta abt jiang cheng, but wwx wasnt just a sworn brother. they literally grew up side by side and yet he was wilfully blind to wwx's nature that should have made jc trust him: wwx's goodness, his tenacity, his selflessness. jc knew him and yet in his grief and anger and haste to blame someone he pours it all on his brother who, as selfless and self-loathing as he is, accepts all the blame. It's not abt the lie, but that jc chose to believe the lie.

I’m guessing this is in response to this post and to clarify, Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian ARE brothers, and I didn’t mean to diminish that by comparing the blind trust to Lan Xichen and the Venerated Triad.

However, here’s the thing, like, what lie are we talking about? Because the lie I’m referring to in that post is multifaceted:

I don’t carry my sword any more because I don’t feel like it, even though it is very publicly rude of me not to

You cannot rely on me to help you run the sect because I am off in a tavern drinking all day, stumbling home drunk, but again, I’m totally fine and have nothing to discuss with you about my mental state at all, I swear I am just a fun-loving guy!

I have said before on my blog that I don’t like good person/bad person dichotomy, for a number of reasons, but primarily because it implies a static state of being and causes a willful blindness to harm people cause. People are complex, and while I do think intent matters, it’s not magic. Wei Wuxian gives up his golden core for Jiang Cheng, with all the good intentions in the world, but he does this without consulting Jiang Cheng, lying to him about it, drugging him to perform experimental surgery, dealing with the trauma of three months in the burial mounds and not having a core alone and absolutely refusing and rebuffing every overture Jiang Cheng makes trying to figure out what’s wrong with him, causing a lot of political problems with his behavior that Jiang Cheng then has to smooth over (and the Jiang sect is in a very fragile place, politically), then busting into a prison camp and killing ALL the guards with a fierce corpse and running off to the burial mounds with the last of the Wen cultivators.

And even with all of this, Jiang Cheng still defends and cares about him, they have that entire staged fight after Wei Wuxian insists on leaving the Jiang sect, which to Jiang Cheng is a betrayal of his promise to be with him in leading the sect, but Wei Wuxian does not tell Jiang Cheng about the whole surgery thing so he really doesn’t have a clue about how much Wen Qing and Wen Ning did for him (although, of course, if he had known about it he would never have let them do it, I’m sure).

From Jiang Cheng’s perspective, how is he supposed to trust in this goodness and selflessness? WWX is throwing the Jiang sect under the bus. WWX is not helping rebuild the sect, he’s drinking all day. (Of course he’s traumatized, they’re ALL traumatized, but he’s not talking about it so how can JC help?) WWX murders a bunch of Jin sect cultivators, running off with a bunch of prisoners of war, from the sect that attempted a full-scale genocide of the Jiang sect. (And to be clear I do not condemn this action and think that Blood Feuds Are Bad, however, in context this is a world where blood feuds are a very real thing. Personally I like the AU where they get Nie Mingjue on their side, as the Nie sect actually has a lot of power that the Jiang sect simply doesn’t, and therefore they can protect the Wen remnants that way. But I digress.)

Not to mention, WWX is using demonic cultivation, corpses are running around, he’s thrumming with resentful energy. Not a good look.

And then Jin Zixuan gets his heart punched out. In CQL there’s a second flautist, but in the book he simply loses control (the control he SWORE he had) and even in CQL it’s not like we find out about the second flautist until the end. How is JC supposed to trust in WWX’s goodness when he’s just murdered his brother-in-law? When he’s abandoned his family and sect for the people that murdered them? (YES I know the Dafan Wens weren’t involved in actively killing people but this is the whole blood-feud-thing, audience knowledge is not character knowledge, etc.)

And then at Nightless City, WWX loses control AGAIN (or at least appears to), three thousand people get murdered, Yanli dies, and JC STILL can’t actually stab him. JC was DESPERATE for any sort of explanation or reason of why this was all happening, but over and over WWX said it was fine, and the real takeaway for JC by the time Nightless City rolls around is - this man is not the boy I grew up with, this man is no longer my brother, my brother would NEVER do this would NEVER hurt Yanli, so it can’t be him any more.

It’s not unlike knowing someone who becomes addicted to drugs. Someone you knew and loved becomes an alcoholic and their whole life goes up in flames and then they’re drunk driving and then they kill someone doing it, and how long are you supposed to sit there while they destroy themselves, telling yourself that you know they’re a good person on the inside?

Now all that said, on the OTHER hand, if you’re talking about the lies that the other sect leaders were spouting, about how WWX was speaking against JC, about how he doesn’t respect him, etc?  You are SO right and it pains me so much that JC didn’t have the ability to stand up to those assholes and say “He’s my brother, shut the fuck up” a la Yanli to Zixun at Phoenix Mountain. Even with all the crap going on in the background, it was obvious to the other (older!) sect leaders that WWX was very powerful and very close to JC and they deliberately tried to undermine the Jiang sect and I hate them. That plays into a lot of the trauma that JC personally has but yes, I think that’s one of the failings that haunts him - how could I have listened to their poisoned words at all?

Really caught up lately on how Songxiao are a parallel to Wei Wuxian & Jiang Cheng

Both are known as a set, at least for a period of time: The Bright Moon and Gentle Breeze, the Distant Snow and Cold Frost. The Twin Prides of Yunmeng (the extent to which they act as a set is another story).

Both Songxiao and Yunmeng Bros have one member who is more embedded in the cultivation world / clan system and one who has fewer ties to the clan system + some relation to Baoshan Sanren (i.e. allowing them to more easily escape the constraints of the cultivation world--though not always the consequences).

Song Lan is from Baixue Temple, while Xiao Xingchen is from Baoshan Sanren’s mountain. SL still has people he cares about at Baixue Temple (and because SL still has ties to them, their safety is put at risk from XY, as it turns out), but Xiao Xingchen does not have ties to anyone but SL. Although both are rogue cultivators, XXC fully originates from outside the clan system and struggles to accept how it functions.

Jiang Cheng is heir to the Jiang Clan. He was never escaping that responsibility. WWX is the son of one of BSSR's disciples and was taken in as a Jiang disciple. His birth status already has him sitting farther removed from the clan system than JC--he isn't bound to the Jiang Clan the way that JC is, and JC will be the first to tell you that WWX sure does act like it.

And then there's the parallel between the golden core transfer and XXC giving his eyes to SL (this is the part that really drives me insane)

Both JC and SL lose an essential part of themselves because of their counterparts. JC gets his golden core melted because he saved WWX. SL is blinded because XY wanted revenge on XXC.

The golden core transfer and the Songxiao eye transfer (lol?) are both mediated by BSSR, either physically or metaphorically (since in JC's case he only thinks BSSR is the one healing him). And both relationships undergo immense damage following the transfer of golden core / eyes.

After the Baixue Temple massacre, SL searches the jianghu for XXC for what we know to be at least a few years. After WWX's death, JC hunted for him down for 13-16 years depending on which canon you prefer. SL and JC refuse to believe that their counterpart is gone forever--SL's goal following the Yi City arc is to heal XXC's fractured spirit, and JC seemed to always believe that WWX was either still somewhere out there or was bound to come back.

In general, this is one aspect of MXTX's work where I really feel like her genius shines through--her ability to craft parallels between characters that make me want to eat rocks

-Leo Sun: This may not be true for every Leo out there, but they usually have a phase of really basking in all of the attention they pull in. (Leo in the big 6 tends to show someone who goes through a period of being ignored or not receiving enough attention before they become a sort of magnet for other people’s attention) That tends to set up Leos for a period when they’re indulging in that attention in all their relationships. Like they’re getting a bit of ego validation by how much all their friends are into them and they go with it and sort of ignore any emotional consequences until they can’t.

-Neptune hard aspects (esp square/opposition) to Moon/Mars: they tend to have a deep fantasy life that affects how they move in the world. They build up their fantasies of the people they’re into being their perfect hook up and they can get “confused” about their feelings about someone. Like they get closer to a friend and hook up and may entertain the idea of dating and a future together but they just don’t actually feel that way about them. Or they break up with someone and still see them in a certain way so they work to please them to some degree in entertaining the idea of getting together again. It’s like future faking but lowkey the native is doing this the most to themselves and trying to figure out what they actually want long term. Sometimes they only understand what they want after an option has been cut off from them.

-Mars hard aspects (esp square/opposition) to Moon: their heart and their d*ck want different things. No but for real though if they have insane s*xual chemistry with someone they’re probably overwhelmed and overthinking it. If they have a deep emotional connection with someone, they may be torn because they lack chemistry with the person. It’s a lot of internal strife of like wanting people to fit together with the perfect traits in the perfect way but the native has to actually figure out what that means for them before they’re able to settle down.

-How do you know if you’re the one? I hate to be blunt about this, but you connection with this guy will take top priority over the others. But dear god you will have to communicate so much to like work through this. You’ll probably have to be a bit patient as you guys get past all of this messiness. The good thing is, that if he’s a good guy he’ll make you feel like you’re in a rom com in a good way, like you’re really loved and cared for, despite all of this. If he’s underdeveloped? Don’t do it girl, he’ll never know what he wants and he’ll stress you tf out (i mean do whatever you want, you’ve just got to figure out if it’s worth the headache and possible heartbreak for you).

Is it possible for Danny to have a female clone as a male?

Short answer: Kinda. There are multiple options.

I'm not an expert by no means, but I'll try to simplify cloning for you. Also, reproductive cloning of humans is more of theoretical field than anything.

Let's start of with this: Dani probably isn't exactly a clone. A cloned embryo is essentially an identical twin of the original organism. She isn't that, because she isn't the same sex. Even if clones are genetically identical with one another, they will not be identical in physical or behavioral characteristics, because DNA is not the only determinant of these characteristics. That's why she is shorter, not as thin, behaves differently etc. Dani was made by reproductive cloning - the process of cloning an entire organism.

So, how to make Dani out of Danny?

To create a female clone from a man you could take his cells and turn off the Androgen receptor genes. The person will develop as female with XY chromosomes and will have Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome. This method creates genotypically male individual but phenotypically female, making them intersex. This would make a clone, but it wouldn't be "genetically" female.

Deleting the Y chromosome. This will create a female child with Turner's Syndrome. Most of the effects of which can be countered with hormone supplements at appropriate development stages.

Duplicate the male X chromosome - turning an XY into an XX. Though the resulting individual wouldn't be a perfect clone because the proportions of source DNA wouldn't be right, all the source material would come from the original male.

Bring in donor chromosomes from an unrelated female. All other genes will be identical to the "parent's" genome, and by controlling which X is active (only single X is active in a female). The 'clone' wouldn't be as identical as the other methods.

So yeah, either Danny is trans or Dani is intersex :D

Dun Dun Dunnn!!! Arkham Security Guard Danny's Epic Backstory! with Dick Grayson

I fell in love with the Arkham Guard AU by @xy-is-i and like most projects I work on, rather than starting where the story starts, I end up going backwards and delve into the backstory.  And I mean waaay into the backstory.

Because while the stories might start when the Bats run into Danny and Jazz working at Arkham Asylum isn’t where they first met.

Long, long ago, through shenanigans unknown, Robin and Phantom became friends, and honestly, they both really needed it. 

Dick Grayson, age 16, has been Robin for a while, but this is so early in the day that there just aren’t many teen heroes or sidekicks yet.  He’s basically pioneering the field of child heroes.

For Danny, 14, Sam and Tucker are great, but there are just some parts of superhero-ing that they just don’t get when you don’t have to hide a secret identity. 

Batman, for his part, does not approve of the friendship.  He’s already not a fan of metas in his city, but when the two of them get together, the chaos twin energy between Dick and Danny multiplies.  Worse, it brings about the pun-pocalypse, and there are only so many puns Bruce can take.  And then there’s the sibling discourse…

After all the stories Danny has told about his family, Dick is desperate to have a little sibling of his own, and the two repeatedly gang up on Batman to adopt another kid.  Their acting may be stilted, but the efforts are constant.

It never works.  Bruce doesn’t have empty nest syndrome yet, and tiny, homicidal Dick was already more than he could handle while he was trying to figure out how to adult, but he also can’t stand that he’s disappointing Dick.  Alfred isn’t helping either; he wants more grandkids.

And there’s no way in HELL that he’s adopting Phantom.

But for Robin and Phantom, they finally have someone they can talk to who gets it.  They can vent about their rogues, get help with homework, bitch about balancing their vigilantism with going to school, talk about whatever TV they’ve been watching, anything and everything.  It’s not uncommon to see them hanging off the Gotham gargoyles or grabbing a bite on top of the Nasty Burger.

There’s an unspoken rule between them that neither pries into the other’s personal life or secret identity, but as they get more comfortable with each other, little things slip out.  Then more.  Numbers are swapped, bits and pieces about their families come out. 

Later on, homes and secret hideouts are visited and they know each other’s first names.  It’s not a problem for Dick to go to the Fenton’s, but technically, Danny isn’t allowed in the Bat Cave or the Manor.  Those visits happen behind Batman’s back, and they were almost caught when they hid in the chandelier before Danny remembered he could turn them invisible. (Alfred encourages the friendship and bakes extra cookies once when he finds out Danny is over.) 

And eventually the relationship grows until they’re comfortable enough to swap full names.  No more secrets.

Dick likes going over to Danny’s place since it’s a chance to feel a lot more normal, even if they have to be very careful and either stay in civilian clothes in the shared areas or stay locked in Danny’s room if they’re in uniform.  Danny also goes out of his way to keep Dick from ever meeting his sister, Jazz (Danny knows he has a type).  It doesn’t stop them from swapping their numbers under the door.  (Jazz will unofficially be Dick’s therapist for years after this)

But being this close, Dick can also see just how stressed Danny is trying to maintain this lifestyle.  Doesn’t help either he has to listen to Danny’s parents go on and on about wanting to rip their own son apart, molecule by molecule.  Sure, Danny has a couple friends to help him, but he doesn’t have the same mentor or support system Dick has.  For a kid his age to be anything other than a sidekick is practically unheard of in this day and age.  Superheroes are still fairly few and far between, but Batman helped start a group called the Justice League a couple years ago with the idea that heroes could help each other.  Maybe there’s something there…

So, Dick starts the Teen Titan.  He had originally intended for Danny to join him as one of the founding members, but are you kidding?  Jump City is on the opposite side of the country!  He has school! and parents! (That’s the point, Danny. We’re trying to get you away from the parents that want to dissect you) He can’t just up and leave home and run halfway across the country!

So, Dick found the other iconic members and still joined the Titans, but Danny will always have an open invitation to join them and a room at the Tower, something Danny does occasionally take advantage of.  Jump City doesn’t spawn as many natural portals as Gotham, but he visits whenever he can and basically haunts the tower the entire month of December to get away from his family.

Still, the distance and growing up are hard on Dick and Danny, and they grow more distant over the years, but they’ll always have each other’s backs in an emergency.  Dick was there when Danny thought he was turning into a monster (it was just ghost puberty).  Danny stole the Spectre Speeder so they could scour the Ghost Zone after Jason died.  And Danny would eventually become godfather to Dick’s daughter, Mar’i. 

But things cooled down between them… at least until a panicked Danny called because his sister just took a job at Arkham…

The Twins

You hopped onto an enemy car, kicking the shooter off the roof, before leaping into the air. As practiced, Thor caught you around the waist with one arm, before dropping you onto another enemy car while he himself flew on top of a watch tower.

Tony soared over your head and Natasha and Clint drove in front of you. Nat was only driving, but Clint was letting loose all of his arrows.

Steve drove past on his motorcycle, which you leapt upon, steadying your feet on the back as you raised your gun and shot everyone that Steve didn't run over with the motorbike.

You held onto his shoulder, kneeling now as he threw his shield and let the motorcycle go up and off several hills.

For one moment, all of you were in sync as you ran forward, for Clint and Natasha had both leapt out of the car. You were still on the back of Steve's motorcycle, but was just jumping off to join Clint and Nat on the ground. Hulk was there with Tony on the other side and Thor above him.

And then you were all running- or in some cases flying- towards the wall in front of you.

"Shit!" You heard Tony shout.

"Language!" Steve retorted. "Jarvis what's the view from upstairs?"

"The central building is protected by some kind of energy shield. Strucker's technology is well beyond any other HYDRA base we've taken."

"Loki's scepter must be there." Thor shouted. You leapt onto the shoulders of another enemy, snapping his neck with your thighs, and leapt off of him, shooting another two through the forehead. "Strucker couldn't mount this defense without it. At long last." He muttered almost to himself.

"At long last is lasting a little long, boys." Natasha replied.

"Yeah. I think we lost the element of surprise." Clint said.

"Wait a second." Tony said on the other side, "NO one else is going to deal with the fact that Cap just said, 'Language'?"

"Tony." You groaned.

"I know." Steve said, and you turned and watched him fling his motorbike into the middle of another car. "Just slipped out"

"Steve." You whined. "That was a beautiful bike." You'd even helped him pick it out.

"Sorry, we'll go shopping for a new one after this." He groaned.

"Clint!" You heard Nat shout.

You looked away, towards her voice to see Cap go flying into the air by seemingly nothing.

Suddenly, you were sent flying off your feet and you landed face first into the snow.

"We have an Enhanced in the field." Cap said, helping you to your feet and the two of you went running.

"Clint's hit!" Nat shouted.

"Somebody want to deal with the bunker?" Nat asked.

"On it." You shouted, veering away from Steve.

Bruce beat you to it, roaring and basically crushing the bunker as he jumped and ran through it.

"Or not." You said.

"Thank you." Nat muttered.

"Stark, we really need to get inside." Steve shouted as you rejoined him. You jumped and kicked one of the guards in the face, stabbing another under the ribs.

"I'm closing in." Tony said. "Jarvis, am I closing in?"

Only a few minutes later he said, "The drawbridge is down people."

"The Enhanced?" Thor asked, leaping down and electrocuting everyone but you and Steve.

"He's a blur. All the new players we've faced, I've never seen this. In fact, I still haven't."

"Clint's hit pretty bad, guys. We're gonna need evac."

"I can get Barton to the jet." Thor said. "The sooner we're gone, the better. You, Stark, and Lady Stark secure the scepter."

"Copy that." Cap said.

"Looks like they're lining up." Thor said with a slight frown.

"Well, they're excited." Steve said, lifting his shield and bracing it. You quickly backed up as Thor rang his hammer off Steve's shield, the blast sending the enemies off their feet and overturning the truck.

"Find the scepter!"

"And for gosh sakes, watch your language!" Tony said.

You laughed.

"That's not going away any time soon." Steve sighed.

"Nope." You laughed again and started to run.

As you and Steve reached the building, you heard Nat say, "We're locked down out here."

"Then get to Banner. Time for a lullaby." Steve said.

You and Steve fought your way through and then Steve kicked a man through a doorway and you lifted your gun as you came face to face with a familiar, though not met yet, face.

"Baron Strucker. HYDRA's number one thug." Steve said, almost in a tone of glee.

"Technically, I'm a thug for S.H.I.E.L.D."

The two circled each other, which just left you pressing a gun into Strucker's back while Steve stood in front of him. "Well, then technically, you're unemployed. Where's Loki's scepter?"

"Don't worry. I know when I'm beat. You'll mention how I cooperated, I hope."

"I'll put it right under 'illegal human experimentation'." Steve said, cheerfully.

"Steve watch out!" You shouted, shooting at the woman who had just appeared, before ramming Steve so that the both of you fell down the stairs.

You watched as the woman stepped back through the doors. "We have a second enhanced." You gasped.

"Female. Do not engage." Steve copied.

"You'll have to be faster than that-"

Steve stomped on his shield which hit Strucker in the eye and face, knocking him to the ground and his stupid glass monocle fell out.

"Guys, I got Strucker." Steve reported.

"Yeah, I got something bigger." Tony said and you frowned, lifting a hand to your com.

"Tony are you out of your suit?"

"Maybe. Just listen. Thor, I got eyes on the prize."

Tony blinked, jumping out of the way as the huge Chitauri centipede moved. It went past him in a blaze of blue light. He suddenly saw a hill made of black rock, with dead people lying upon it. Hulk was at the very top, with four or five speaks sticking out of his back. Nat was below him, her face turned towards him and her eyes open. Clint was next, propped up as though he had been sitting when he had been killed.

Maria laid next to him and then Thor laid at their feet, hammer out of his hand, his face turned and bloody.

Below him was a shattered shield, broken in two, jagged edges down the middle. Steve was closest to his feet, dead, an arm thrown out as though he was protecting someone.

That someone was Y/N, beautiful eyes open and dead. Everleigh was in her arms and though Everleigh was pressed into Y/N so Tony couldn't see her face, but he knew she was dead too.

He bent down, going to move Steve's arm away from Y/N's body, but Steve grabbed his arm. In a voice that was almost Steve's, but slightly weirder, he said, "You. Could have saved. Us." And then he fell still once more, accusing eyes staring into Tony's soul. Though his lips didn't move, a voice spoke in his head, "Why didn't you do more?"

Tony looked up and saw his worst nightmare. More and more centipedes, flying towards a ship. Flying towards Earth.

He stood up and it was all gone. He turned, seeing the centipede was still there. He stuck a hand out, moving quickly towards the scepter. He needed to hold Y/N. He grabbed the scepter. And was out of there.

"Thor, report on the Hulk." Natasha called over.

You looked up from where you had been reading, to hear Thor said, "The gates of Hel are filled with the screams of his victims."

You started to giggle quietly into your book. You knew that was the last thing that Bruce had wanted to hear.

Bruce put his head in his hands and Nat shot him a glare, "But not the screams of the dead, of course. No, no, wounded screams. Mainly whimpering, uh, a great deal of complaining and tales of sprained deltoids and gout."

You stuffed your fist into your mouth to keep from laughing to loudly, but Steve's amused face sent you spiraling into giggles. Steve just shook his head at you.

"Hey Banner! Dr. Cho is on her way in from Seoul. Is it okay if she sets up in your lab?" Tony called from the front.

"Uh, yeah, she knows her way around." Bruce called back.

"Thanks." Tony said.

Tony put everything in auto pilot and then joined the rest of you. "Feels good, yeah? I mean, you've been after this thing since S.H.I.E.L.D. collapsed. Not that I haven't enjoyed our little raiding parties, but-"

"No but this- This brings it to a close." Thor replied.

"As soon as we find out what else this has been used for. I don't just mean weapons. Since when is Strucker capable of human enhancement?"

"Banner and I will give it the once over before it goes back to Asgard." Tony said quickly. You looked over at him. He seemed a little different than before. "Is that cool with you? Just a few days till the farewell party. You're staying, right?"

"Yes, yes, of course. A victory should be honoured with revels."

"Yeah, who doesn't love a few revels. Captain?" Tony asked.

"Hopefully this puts an end to the Chitauri and HYDRA." Was Steve's reply. "So, yes, revels."

Maria came up onto the ship, holding a squirming, four- year old Everleigh. "Lab's all set up boss." She said, putting Everleigh down. She ran into your arms and you picked her up, pecking her face with kisses.

"Oh, actually, he's the boss." Tony said, motioning to Steve. "I just pay for everything and design everything and make everyone look cooler." You giggled.

"What's the word on Strucker?" Steve asked, standing up. Of course, he couldn't walk past Everleigh without her making grabby hands at him so you passed her over to him and then walked up to Tony.

"How are you feeling?" You asked softly, running your hands up his chest to place them lightly on his shoulders. "You seem tense. What's wrong?"

Tony looked down at you and then said, "Just want to go to bed with you really soon."

You smiled. "Alright, that can definitely be managed."

"Can't. Actually." He grumbled. "Promised Thor I had to look over the scepter."

"Oh alright." You said, trying not to let the disappointment show. "You're smart, you can figure it out. I'll check in on Clint then, give you a little peace of mind. I'm sure he'll be fine though."

"And Everleigh?"

You looked over at where she was asleep contently in Steve's arms.

You smiled a little. "We found ourselves a babysitter."

Tony chuckled, "And I don't even have to pay him for it."

You went with Tony as far as the med-bay which really happened to be right next to where Tony was working. But then you realized this was Bruce's office, so it really wasn't much more than a makeshift med bay.

"Are you sure he's gonna be okay?" Nat asked, frowning at the weird machine that was doing weird things to Clint's body. "Pretending to need this guy really brings the team together."

You laughed at that and Clint smiled.

"There's no possibility of deterioration. The nano- molecular functionality is instantaneous. His cells don't know they're bonding with simulacra."

"She's creating tissue." Bruce said in a fascinated voice. Thor opened up the door at the moment, coming in quietly for once to wrap his arms around Bruce.

"If you brought him to my lab, the Regeneration Cradle could do this in twenty minutes." Dr. Cho boasted.

"Oh, he's flat lining." Tony said, coming in with drinks, "Call it. Time?"

"No, no, no. I'm gonna live forever." Clint laughed. "I'm gonna be made of plastic."

"Here's your drink." Tony handed it to him.

"You'll be made of you, Mr. Barton." Dr. Cho corrected.

You looked out the glass doors to see Steve bouncing Everleigh on his hip, cooing at her and laughing. It really was sweet. "Your own soulmate won't be able to tell the difference. Here's the next thing Tony. Your clunky metal suits are gonna be left in the dust."

"That is exactly the plan." Tony said. "And, Helen, I expect to see you at the party this Saturday."

"Unlike you, I don't have time for parties." Dr. Cho said. She paused and then asked Thor, "Will you be there?"

Bruce coughed a laugh.
