I'm seeing an image of somebody sitting hunched over at their bench, writing down one sentence on a sheet of paper before crumpling it and starting again. This isn't a healthy mentality as you're not giving you and your imagination a chance. Your advice to be kinder to yourself by giving your inner vision more space to breathe. Being in stillness and sitting back with a blank canvas is part of the creation process and is in the end more productive than deleting the first page of your book over and over again. You have all three cards as major arcana, so learning this lesson will prove to be monumental to your life's overall progress.

I think this pile is definitely experienced when it comes to making big plans and carrying them through. It seems the one thing that motivates you most is the feeling of "this has to be done, whether or not I like it." You put on a strict poker face only to fall apart as soon as no one's looking. Please let me tell you, pile 3, that you do not always have to be strong for everyone else. It's beautiful for you to see yourself as an important part of what makes life work, that your skills and patience are needed and appreciated. But all the praise in the world won't make up for that hollow feeling of coming home and realizing that you have to be strong for yourself, too. Your advice is similar to pile 2. You need to greatly soften your approach. Allow other people to pick up the pace and help you every now and then. Especially if there are many moving parts and you get into "octopus mode" of needing to be involved in all the cogs of the wheel. It shouldn't always be equal work, going out and dealing with people, then dealing with yourself. When you need time for yourself, take the chance. Ground yourself through nurturing and soothing habits at home, something that lets you take off the "big boss" mask for a while.

Continuing with my recent rambling about vidya games and magic cardboard, this is the single greatest depiction of the Devil (XV) card I’ve seen so far, and I’m into the esoteric shit, so that’s saying a lot.

It only makes sense if you’ve played or looked up enough about Undertale, but to fully grasp its meaning you’d have to not only play the game, but commit to the Genocide route.

Throughout that route, every character that manages to speak before you turn them into dust calls out the player character and even the player directly. The gameplay structure becomes a slow paced, meticulous slough, forcing the player to wander from room to room hoping to find surviving enemies in the hopes of making a number on a screen go up. Characters who would be your friends in a normal or pacifist play through are reduced to things that can help you get more superficial strength, or as dark reminders that you do not have to do this, you are making yourself do this.

When fighting against the last “enemy” in the game, (Sans) he speaks directly to the player, saying “you can beat me, and because you can, you think you HAVE to”, highlighting that fact that you haven’t lost control, you’re willingly surrendering control to whatever part of your brain wants increase above all else.

Finally, we’re confronted by a ghostly image of “Chara”, referring to himself as a demon before destroying the in-game universe and closing the game itself.

If you try open it again, “Chara” shows up again, asking the player why they’re here, they got what they were after by destroying enemies and becoming strong to its natural conclusion, then offers to bring reset the game and allow you to play again… in exchange for your SOUL.

Spooky, but everything about this route, start to finish, is the essence of the Devil card. Relinquishing your free will in exchange for material gain, giving in to temptations, addictions, and baser tendencies; pacts, contracts, deals, being bound by commitments, staring the darker parts of yourself in the face, etc, etc.

The best part to me is that this specific, twisted myth of a fallen child shutting down every part of themselves except the desire to slay and conquer until the world crumbled, can only be told through the lens of a game, occasionally alluding to the nature of modern games, developers, and gamers. There’s a lot to be said about the glamorized Skinner Boxes being pumped out by “triple A” companies and consumed by an addicted market, but it can all be summed up nicely by Undertale’s genocide route, or by the Devil card.

(Side note: I personally don’t think the Chara we see at the end is actually him. It’s the impulse that leads somebody to pursue the genocide route wearing his avatar. At previous points in the game, certain text implies that the player is Chara completing his plan, but in the story, Chara is absorbed in the same twisted impulse as the genocide route player is, just to a higher degree in a world where their actions have far darker consequences. Ditto for Flowey/Asriel)

The energy between us is constantly changing and transforming. We both have issues with control and dependency in any kind of relationship, which makes this energy a little hard at times. Especially if both of us are struggling at the same time. But there’s also this energy of renewal and awaking. We kinda force each other to get out of our unhealthy behaviors by confronting each other. We would hold each other accountable for our past actions or any toxic behaviors like manipulation. The positive, we free each other from any negative patterns and influences, as long as we’re honest and true to ourselves. There’s also a natural trust between each other and we both commit 100% to the energy we have. XV-The Devil

Prompt: Free Write

Characters: Shayl, Louis Marlowe

Warnings: Sleep paralysis, night terrors. Tapping into my own childhood affliction for this one~

The blinding fear always seems to strike in the dead of night.

Screams trapped in his chest, limbs stricken with the need to run and yet trapped in place, his body refusing to obey... Young Louis has been stricken with these terrors since he was five years old. Mama tells him that she used to have them too, and that they'll grow less frequent in time. All her cousins had them. Her parents, too. Everyone born into the Marlowe family and its branches must contend with them at some point. As far as she knows, even the woman responsible for their family's dreadful fate had terrifying nightly episodes as well. At least they know they aren't related to Shayl. Just another heirloom that miss Ophelia Shaw passed down.

Cygni talked him through the terror when he was only six. She taught him what to do. He walks through each step whenever he wakes like this, once the nightmares slip out of his fingers like icy tendrils to coil beneath his bed.

Tonight, he's woken by dreams of mutilated flesh and whispering voices, of colorful paper birds and many, many eyes. His screams in the nightmare translate to painful waking gasps, his own saliva a choking, burning obstacle. The dark of the star-shaped room smears into the dark of his own bedchamber. He can tell even behind closed eyelids.

"Hello, Louis."

Here, now, my Louis. First of all let's control your breathing. Count up to ten, then back down again.

He does so, just as he remembers his mother saying. One breath, then two, and then three. He coughs, but he's no longer choking on his own saliva, no longer gasping desperately for air. Four breaths. He can hear the thump of a crooked gait across the hardwood floor. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine. Ten. The moment he can breathe again, the footsteps stop at his bedside.

"You look so much like your mother."

That's the way. Now let's focus on moving again. Don't open your eyes yet. Start with wiggling your fingers. Concentrate. One at a time, now.

It's a struggle. For a few frightful, frustrating moments, his fingers refuse to heed his command. Then he feels the twitch of his pinky and curls it in towards his palm. Next the ring finger, its movements stiff and stilted. He feels his middle finger tense, feels the sensation of something brushing over his forehead. His eyes remain shut. The middle finger curls in. Then the index, and finally his thumb. The muscles of his calf twitch violently and for just a moment, he feels like he's falling.

"Such a sweet boy. How cruel of your mother to keep you from me."

Keep going. Just as you're doing now. One by one, until you're sure you can move again. You know, it helped me to have a little light when I was your age. I might still have the special lamp grandpa Florian made for me... I can dig it out of storage and keep it in here for you.

He knows what he'll see when he opens his eyes. In those moments of uncertainty after waking, he fears that he may have dragged his nightmare into reality. He can smell the creature, the blood covering every limb which now smears over his quilts. The rot wafting off of him in a stinking cloud. Louis doesn't need to open his eyes to know that those countless eyes are all staring right at him, a few errant ones swiveling wildly out of control.

"Open your eyes, Louis."

Don't open your eyes yet. Feel the base of the lamp with your fingers. Press the switch. Turn your face towards the wall. Then, and only then can you open your eyes. Focus on the pattern of stars cast over the wall. Then, I want you to call for me, understand? I will come running for you, no matter how deep in dreams I am.

"I said open your eyes."

Louis moves as quickly as his addled state allows, hands darting out from under the covers to take hold of the small lamp upon the nightstand. It's lightweight, sturdy, and warm. He turns his face towards the wall, flips the switch, and opens his eyes. A pattern of constellations dances on his bedroom wall, mesmerizing and bright. He blinks away the sudden spots in his vision, and calmly calls out.

"Mama?"

The thing at his bedside shrieks as if he's thrown burning oil upon it.
