house md · season 4 You spend your whole life looking for answers… Because you think the next answer will change something, maybe make you a little less miserable. And you know that when you run out of questions, you don't just run out of answers. You run out of hope. You glad you know that?

fandom participation in the 2007 wga strike: some notes
Tumblr media
fans4writers.com (a website that is still live, though most links are broken!) was a fandom grassroots organization, originating primarily in Firefly/Whedonverse fandom
fans4writers emphasizes cross-fandom solidarity (all fans of all writers) with the very catchy logo "don't write until it's right"!
that group was responsible for pizza deliveries to picket lines, joining in picketing efforts, mass mailing pencils to studios, and sky writing in support of the wga during the tournament of roses parade. (reportedly, universal studios called the cops on a pencil delivery.)
the website had these (honestly still very good) FAQ for joining in picketing. [I'm currently aware (may 5) that the WGA is open to non-members picketing as well, and some "pre-WGA" (aka aspiring writers) are even organizing carpools on Twitter!]
fans4writers also had forums for organizing purposes (that are now dead, that I wish I could view and archive) and a still-existing but unused Twitter account with updates.
I ask again: who in the 2023 fandom landscape has the balls to organize fandom in support of the WGA?? Whedonverse and Battlestar Galactica fans were crowdsourcing pizza funds, creating auctions, putting together this website and all its outreaches and mf'ing official press releases... where can we find that energy now?
note: I was 10 years old when the 2007 strike happened; I just like digging on the Internet and may have gotten things wrong about these organizations and am open to corrections from anyone who was present and in the trenches. In fact, if you were a part of the aforementioned organizing efforts, I would LOVE to chat with you!
[read the WGA's official statement on the strike here and always get your strike news from official WGA sources. Don't trust the biased trade sources or social media.]

He's just jealous because everyone's up in the attic listening to Stephen Colbert.
Writers Strike [Explained]
Transcript
[Cueball sits in front of a desk with a computer. Black Hat stands behind him.] Cueball: This writer's strike sucks. Black Hat: Why? You don't watch sitcoms. Cueball: Yeah, but it sucks having political campaigns without Jon Stewart's commentary.
[Cueball is off-panel.] Black Hat: True. I finally got sick of it a couple weeks ago. Cueball: And you quit following the campaigns?
[Black Hat points at a door. Cueball is still off-panel.] Black Hat: No. I kidnapped Jon Stewart to do analysis for me. Cueball: You what? Black Hat: He's locked in the basement.
[Black Hat is shouting at the door. Black Hat: Jon! Obama's leading in Iowa! Gimme a wry, witty comment on the situation! Jon Stewart [Voice coming from door]: Please let me go. I have a family.

Anyway I am going to keep enjoying writing every single fic idea I have for this dumb beautiful show forever. This is a great reminder to consider pursuing archives of your favourite media, should you feel something is important to be able to rewatch in future.

reading the nearly unanimously approved WGA strike announcement + the proposals/counter proposals between them and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), knowing damn well I not only have friends who write for the major networks insulting them with this “gig economy” undermining their union, but that every single writer on the ST staff listed on the official WGA roster…and we sure as hell aren’t getting that season until 2025 now:

Beastly (2011, Daniel Barnz)
19/01/2024
Beastly is a 2011 film written and directed by Daniel Barnz.
Based on the novel of the same name by Alex Flinn, the film is a modern and youthful reinterpretation of the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast.
Kyle thus gradually understands that beauty is not essential to be loved: an increasingly close relationship is born between the two until, while she is leaving for Machu Picchu, they declare their love for each other.
In December 2007, CBS Films purchased the film rights to Beastly, putting it in development as the first project in a long list of swallowed-up productions, also taking other HarperTeen titles in option.
The filmmakers had a production-distribution plan that aimed for a theatrical release as early as 2008, but the start of the screenwriters' strike (2007-2008) canceled the strategy, delaying development.
In February 2009 it was announced by Amy Baer, president and executive director of CBS Films, that Alex Flynn's novel Beastly would be adapted for the big screen by Daniel Barnz, in charge of directing and writing the screenplay. Susan Cartsonis with her Storefront Films and Roz Weisberg are approached to co-produce the film.
The film's main song, Broken Arrow, was composed by Pixie Lott. Furthermore, from the twenty-first to the twenty-third minute, the plot is set in a masquerade party: here the basic music is Boys and Girls by Pixie Lott herself. In addition to these two songs, a song by the famous artist Lady Gaga, namely Vanity, is also used.
La Idea published the Italian trailer of the film on 8 April 2011.
Beastly was listed as the 45th best film of 2010 in The Times magazine's "The 50 Biggest Movies of 2010".
At the end of the book Linda and Kyle return to school, while at the end of the film they leave for Machu Picchu.

I would love for someone to tell me the story of how 2007 writers strike affected the CW’s Supernatural. I am laying on the ground with my chin in my hands and I am kicking my feet. My eyes are sparkling up at you bc I know I could look this up but I want story time.
