On August 8, 1863, Tennessee ratified the 13th Amendment, abolishing the domestic slave trade of Black + indigenous folks in the state. 159 years later in 2022, Tennessee folks voted to abolish all forms of slavery in the state, including the "Slavery Clause" that allows for incarcerated slavery to persist in both state-sanctioned + private for-profit prisons.To this day, the United States continues to build wealth off the exploited labor of impoverished, (dis)abled, undocumented + racially marginalized people who are incarcerated.
Each community and country that participated in the Transatlantic Slave Trade has its own emancipation day (or year).
And yet, as of 2023, Colorado, Alabama, Oregon, Vermont, Tennessee + Nevada (2024) are the only U.S. states who have made steps to abolish slavery in all its forms. That's not even touching how slavery, both state-sanctioned and illegal bondage, continues to bleed into our everyday places from child labor + forced s*x work to penal plantations and chocolate factories (looking at you at hershey chocolate)
In this second wave of Jim & Jane Crow flooding our world, we must arm ourselves with the tools to disrupt systems, distribute resources + deepen our collective action + good trouble ~
If you wanna explore the full Emancipation post + readings, come join us in the garden community over on Patreon where we upRoot our miseducation through history lessons, community conversations + book talks + decolonizing our everyday practic, our classrooms + our communities.
Reclaim your emancipation + immerse yourself in the ancestral, antiracist liberation! 🖤✊🏾✨️

A Year Of Songs #16 - “Orbital Maneuvers” by Asher Fulero

“Orbital Maneuvers” is the steady rising, vibrant sound of day’s dawning, creation crackling to life with a delightfully funky sproing as light peeks around a planet’s edges.
2024’s Worlds throws lines back to lively genre-stretchers like Pharoah Sanders and Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes and more recent electronic-organic blenders like Kruder & Dorfmeister, Ashley Beedle and Emancipator, whose live band Fulero played keys in. Confidently exploratory throughout, Worlds introduces us to colorful vistas, murmuring expanses, and interesting new soil to curl beneath our mind’s toes.
A tangible forward motion pushes “Orbital Maneuvers, Jack Yaguda’s saxophone breathing slow and steady in the opening moments before thrusters ignite with a mix of programmed and live drums that keeps the vibe modern amidst Fulero’s pleasing analog keyboard throwback touches. Gina Sobel’s delicious flute accents and Brett McConnell’s lap steel moan further enliven the journey with Fulero bringing in and dropping out elements with a badass DJ’s nuance.
Portland’s Asher Fulero is not only one of the West Coast’s most reliably excellent keyboardists, he’s increasingly one of the coolest independent producers and composers going today with a reach and comfort level in everything from jazz to jam, electronica to experimental, twangy to Technicolor, and beyond. Worlds is the best overall showcase of his diverse talents yet, and “Orbital Maneuvers” is a beguiling blooming for ears.

Writing Reference: Grief
“Grief is the emotional reaction to a loss, in this case, to death” (Samuel, 2019, p. xvii), and mourning is the process of adjustment to a world without that person.
The following physical sensations and perceptual experiences often accompany the grieving process (modified from Worden, 2009):
Hollowness in the stomach
Tightness in the throat and chest
Being oversensitive to noise
Feelings of unreality
Shortness of breath
Muscle weakness and lack of energy
Dry mouth
Strong emotions typically occur during grief, including (from Worden, 2009):
Sadness. Failure to acknowledge and embrace sadness can cause more complicated and prolonged grief.
Anger. A common reaction to loss that leads to many issues during the grieving process.
Guilt and self-reproach. Often regarding something that happened or was neglected at the time of death.
Anxiety. Ranging from feelings of insecurity to panic attacks, sometimes associated with fears of being unable to take care of yourself in the absence of the other person.
Loneliness. The loss of a day-to-day relationship can leave someone feeling all alone. Social support can help but does not remove the sense of a broken attachment.
Fatigue. Feelings of apathy and listlessness are not uncommon following the death of a loved one and may limit behavior and activity.
Helplessness. Survivors can be left feeling vulnerable and helpless, especially when they have young children to look after.
Shock. Sudden death, by its very nature, can cause the survivor to experience shock.
Yearning. Yearning or pining for the loved one is a typical reaction to death, and as it reduces, may indicate the mourning process is coming to an end.
Emancipation and relief. It is not uncommon for a survivor to experience a sense of relief, especially where the deceased was oppressive or was suffering a prolonged illness. While a normal response, it may be accompanied by feelings of guilt.
Numbness. While the previous feelings are common, so too is an absence of emotions, at least initially. With so many feelings to experience and manage, the early stages of grief may be overwhelming and result in a protective numbness.
It is important to note that each person’s experience of grief is different, and while the emotions above are typical of loss, they are not exhaustive.
Types of grief can take various forms, including (Elizz by SE Health, 2019; CaringInfo, n.d.; WebMD, n.d.):
Abbreviated grief. A short-lived response to a death, possibly following the experience of prolonged anticipatory grief or something immediately filling the space left by the loss.
Absent grief. The bereaved may not acknowledge or may remain in denial of what has happened. If prolonged, the lack of response can be concerning and require specialist support.
Anticipatory grief. For a caregiver, grief can begin before the person being cared for dies. It may be associated with a sense of losing what they expected life to be like. Such feelings can start with a terminal diagnosis or a worsening state of health.
Chronic grief. A sub-type of complicated grief (see below), left untreated, chronic grief can involve extreme feelings of hopelessness, a sense of disbelief, and a loss of meaning, leading to severe clinical depression or thoughts of self-harm and even suicide.
Collective grief. A shared experience of grief that affects a family, group, or community, often preceded by an event (natural disaster or attack).
Complicated grief. Where grief seems to deviate from what’s expected, complicated grief interferes with the ability to function. Complicated grief may include chronic (see above), delayed, or absent grief (American Psychological Association, n.d.).
Cumulative grief. Multiple deaths over a period of time can leave the bereaved without the opportunity or capacity to process each loss.
Delayed grief. Grief may not occur immediately after losing a loved one but may be postponed until another significant event occurs, resulting in what may seem an excessive response to the present situation.
Distorted grief. An extreme form of complicated grief exhibited as self-destructive behavior, anger, guilt, or hostility toward others.
Disenfranchised grief. When others do not recognize the importance of the loss, such as the death of an ex-partner, pet, or colleague. Society may consider the loss as minor or not legitimate.
Inhibited grief. Grief may not always be outwardly visible; it may result from a conscious effort to maintain privacy or keep emotions hidden from close friends or family.
Masked grief. Atypical physical symptoms and behaviors can be a response to grief without being attributed to the loss.
Normal grief. While there may not be a ‘typical’ grief shared by everyone, normal grief is considered to be when emotional intensity surrounding the death gradually decreases or basic daily activities begin to return to normal.
“We need to learn to support a healthy grieving, and to help people to understand that each person goes at their own pace” (Samuel, 2019, p. XX).
The treatment given to those attempting to process grief must be specific to the individual and their experience. The following approaches overlap and complement one another in supporting the bereaved (modified from Worden, 2009).
Helping the survivor actualize loss
When and where did the death occur?
What happened?
How were you told and where were you?
Visiting the grave can also make the loss more concrete.
Helping the survivor identify and experience feelings
Many feelings may not be recognized or felt to their full degree during intense grief. It is essential to help survivors experience the following:
Anger – arising from feelings of frustration and helplessness.
Guilt – for what the bereaved did and did not do to affect the outcome (usually irrational).
Anxiety and helplessness – feelings of helplessness can leave the bereaved unsure if they can survive alone and concerned about their own mortality.
Sadness – it can be challenging for many to show their upset in front of others. Crying can be helpful if associated with an awareness of what was lost.
Assisting living without the deceased
What problems are you facing, and how can they be resolved?
It is important to neither rush the bereaved to make decisions nor encourage a sense of helplessness, but instead communicate that they will be able to make decisions when they are ready.
Helping find meaning in the loss
Why did this happen?
Why did this happen to me?
How has this loss changed me?
Allowing for individual differences
No two people grieve in the same way; the process and feelings associated with loss are unique. There is tremendous variability in the following:
Intensity of affective reactions
Degree of impairment
Length of time it is experienced

DpxDc AU: What’s an adoption paper or two between bros?
Danny is starting to realize that since Jazz left the house for university, his parents aren’t really good at well, being his parents. They’re obsessed with his alter ego to the point that they ignore his normal ego, and that uh, hurts his feelings. Like, a lot. Meal times have gotten weirder and more inconsistent, and he’s starting to wonder if they suspect what’s really going on with him.
They’ve started to say “You know you can tell us anything” these days when he sees them outside their lab (which isn’t frequent) but the normal amount of ghost hate speech hasn’t changed. If anything it’s gotten worse. Just like everything else.
Danny joined the whole-ass justice league to fill his spare time after high school and his parents are literally none the wiser. Like, he's a part time high-school senior at 17 and a full time international hero. His parents only comment on the fact that the menace Phantom is costing them a lot in airline tickets as they try and apprehend him all over the world. Hell, they caught Ellie for a second when he was in Morrocco and it got ugly fast. She's a junior member now but mostly spends her time with some doofus that has a magic traveling house.
And really, he's fine with his schedule of going to school, going ghost and making a difference, and then returning to a dramatically silent house. Really.
Then one day his new friend and co-team lead Red Robin makes a brief mention about his own childhood of neglect and Danny makes a joke, "What, no adoption papers for the homies?"
He laughs as he says it but something in his leader's eyes looks sharp, and Kon is sighing in the background something that sounds suspiciously like dear Rao you've done it now.
Next time Danny is on the Watchtower, he's brought into a meeting with Red Robin, Batman and various other JL team leaders.
"Adoption papers are very much for the homies. I've also included the option of emancipation, as you'll see in the green folder, but I am one hundred percent serious about adopting you."
"Red, you're like, 3 months younger than me." Danny deadpans.
"Adoption is for the homies and I'm emancipated. And If i'm reading Batman correctly, you're facing three outcomes right now."
"Three?"
"One: I adopt you and you become my legal dependent. Two: Batman adopts you and I become your legal brother. or Three: You emancipate yourself while allowing us to provide for you while your housing situation is sorted out."
"... Uh. Door one?" Danny is having too many feelings. Why does batman look disappointed? What is Jazz going to say? What on earth???
"Welcome to the Drake Family." Red shakes his hand up and down, the grin on his face feral and the plan towards being emancipated from the Fentons and adopted by his boss is a weird one.
But eventually, a few weeks later, he's had a pretty delicious dinner by his new adoptive grandfather-tler and is watching a movie with Tim and Kon on the couch and he's just so happy and comfortable and warm...
"Will this make Kon my dad if you two get married?" Danny laughs and it's the closest he gets to being disowned.

DPXDC: I wanna be like most girls ghosts.
or Danny: What should I do to make my mom happy?
or ~Danny deserves a little teenage rebellion as a treat~
Maddie: I just want this damned Phantom to stop pretending to be a hero! All ghosts are pure evil, who is he trying to deceive? Danny: Oh, really? And Danny took it personally.
It’s not Danny’s fault that he’s a good kid and wants to make his parents happy. But why would he have to be a monster to make them happy? Why must they hate him to be happy?
Danny’s obsession was going crazy.
Well, when your own parents call you a monster in the face, it hurts. Why do they always believe that only their opinion is the absolute truth? They have no idea how much worse things would be if at least some of the ghosts really behaved the way Maddie and Jack think they’re supposed to. If he really is evil by nature, is there any point in fighting his own fate? They want to see him as a villain, he will become one. He will. He just needs a little help and practice. And not bring it to the level when Clockwork has to clean up his mess. Poor guy is without a vacation for how long? Couple of millennia?
Johnny 13: Sup. Danny: F*ck off, Johnny, I’m not in the mood. Busy thinking about world domination. Get out of here or I’ll call Kitty. Johnny 13: What’s wrong? You’re usually so grouchy only towards the end of the week. Danny: Nothing. Just parents. Again. They are wonderful but I can’t help but feel sometimes that they, em… Johnny 13: Suck? Danny: Right…Damn. I’m a terrible son. Maybe something is wrong with me. Johnny 13: What? No, no, dude. You’re just growing up. And you’re a little late, usually teenagers go through that stage before they graduate. Well, you’ve probably been busy with other issues, so just missed it. Danny: I wonder whose fault it is. Aren’t there ghosts who enjoyed to ruin my life in the middle of school day?
Johnny 13: Oh, bother. Anyway, you’re entering a beautiful time of emancipation, where you’re going to shape your own view of life and, along the way, to get drunk on cheap alcohol at parties, maybe to go to jail and to become the greatest disappointment to your family..And then you will be ashamed to remember it for about the next ten years. Danny: Well, it looks like I’ve already done two out of three additional things. Great success. Johnny 13: When did you get drunk? Danny: I didn’t. Johnny 13: Oh. Want to fix that? Danny: What? No. What an idiot wants to add a headache to his problems? Johnny 13: Well, your loss, then I’ll go terrorize the bars of Gotham alone and no one can stop me. Let’s see what your boyfriend will say about it. ~~~~~ Danny: Bartender, another shot of Dead Man’s Fingers, please. Red Hood: Babe, haven’t you had enough? Danny: Have you ever felt that no matter how hard you try, no matter how many sacrifices you make, in their eyes you’ll always be nothing more than a monster? Nothing more than a mistake? Oh, Death doesn’t give people like me a break. Red Hood: …I’ll have what he’s having. *gives the bartender a sign to switch the rum shots to a batburger milkshake for them, and starts talking to Danny so that he doesn’t understand Hood's scams*
~~~~~
Johnny 13: Other people’s kids are growing up so fast. It seems like yesterday he didn’t know how to shoot ectoblast, and now.. Kitty: Stop trying to make me feel bad, we’re leaving. Johnny 13: But the boy needs our support, honey boo!
~~~~~
Danny: I'm fine. Really, I am. This isn’t the first time mom’s called me a monster. She often called me that when she was upset with my behavior in my childhood. Huh, it's even funny. Jason: There’s nothing funny about that. Danny: No, you don’t understand. Looking back, I was really a very active child and didn’t know when to stop. Not surprisingly that I often annoyed my parents. They’re very busy people, and Jazz couldn’t always keep an eye on me. And I was often afraid to go to sleep alone because there were shadows in the darkness of my room. Well, I used to think they were. But I pretended everything was okay to not distract parents from work. Jason: Hey, it’s not your fault. You were a child. Obviously, kiddo requires a lot of attention, they must have understood that. You are the second child in the family, right? Danny: Well, Jazz was different. I don’t know. Anyway, I thought if the monsters behind the curtain and under the bed were just like me, well, according to my mom, you know, then they wouldn’t want to hurt me. And since they look after me, they are friends. So I kinda greeted all the suspicious noises and howls. Huh, I was a strange kid. Jason: If you smile at someone in the dark alley right now that someone is more likely to wet themselves or faint. Danny: Rude! I’m not that scary. Admit that I’m adorable. Do it right now. Jason: Stunning, darling. But still carry a gun and a knife, please. My childhood taught me that what's hiding in the dark is worth beating up. Danny: Come on, what should I be afraid of? Death? Anyway, I want to try this shit. Like, the inevitable one. Being a bad boy, you know? Hood *raises eyebrows*. Danny: Oh damn it man, I'm talking about ghostliness. I want to try to be like most of dead ones. I want to unleash my side of the trickster and the villain. But only a little bit. I have to be supervised so that things don't go too far. Would you help me, honey?
~~~~~2 hours later~~~~
~~~~~
Goons used to expect a lot of weirdness from working with the boss.
Sometimes Bruce Wayne would go into their base and yell at the Red Hood like he's one of his kids. Of course Wayne's well-known as 'Gotta adopt them all' but the guy must really suffer from insomnia to count the Red Hood into his brood of chicks several times. Sometimes the boss would fight Robin or Nightwing over differences in morals…or for biscuits. It varied from moment to moment. Sometimes the boss caught the local street children, fed them and taught them to steal correctly. And most of the foundlings stayed with them under their protection.
To make a long story short, Red Hood is not the typical crime lord that some of them had to deal with before. Which is a blessing. Thanks Lord for the health insurance. But still the crime lord. Which means he's still scary, and sometimes deadly.
Anyway, when the boss brought in a guy who looked more civilian than any civilian in the whole Gotham and said he was going to be their intern, they thought it was a joke at first. Despite the fact that Hood was not in the habit of joking while working.
The teenager was too well-mannered and sweet to come from Crime Alley. Phil thought the guy was gonna run when he saw the first murder, Jessica didn’t think the domestic boy wouldn’t chicken out at the sight of a fight. But arguing with a boss’s orders in their profession is like asking for a bullet in the head, so these conversations were taking place outside of their boss's sight. God, how can they teach him anything? What do you take from a boy who’s only good to do the coffee run? Fenton will fall if they’ll give him something heavier than 10 pounds. And then boss will yell at them because he treats the new guy like a princess on a pea. Well, at least that’s what they thought until the boss decided to give the new guy his own assignments:

~~~~~
Red Hood: So, what have you learned during your internship, my young Padawan? Danny: Well, it looks like I’m gonna suck at being a criminal mastermind. I think I may have to find myself some other profession. Red Hood: Come on, you just need a little more practice. Danny: Thank you but I don’t think that’s fit my obsession that good. Don't misunderstand me, I wanna be like most ghosts. But I was wrong to go to hit that goal only base on human stereotypes about my nature. Red Hood: What a pity. The newbies just learned not to flinch when you walk in. But, to be honest, I'm not gonna miss the adrenaline-boosting roller coaster of you at work. Danny: Oh, and I guess to hold on to the concept of humanity was really stupid too. I clearly no longer fit in and I’m finally ready to accept that. So, hopefully, if you get into trouble, you can rely on my ghostliness and call for help. I am the spirit of many talents and of my word. I can haunt your enemies or walk through the walls of Arkham Asylum. Whatever you need, I’ll be here. Red Hood: I’ll bear that in mind.
carlossainz55 this last week has been extra special for me, to know it is the anniversary of the first time i met my best friend, and that she was able to be with me when i lifted the trophy in singapore is a wonderful feeling.
but to see all the ignorant, unkind, and hurtful comments that are regularly directed at my wife has put a negative twirl on this time. my wife, to me, is the most beautiful woman in the world. she is kind, and loving, and has given up the world for me time and time again. no one knows our relationship more than her and i. many of you speak things that are so ignorant and false it is disgusting. if you are one of these people, please know, you are not a fan i find myself caring for.
i beg those who continue to speak poorly of my wife, to think about how your actions can harm others. thank you. and to yourusername, you are the most important light in my life. i cant wait to see you amor.
im like... sick and twisted over sugar daddy wilson who's enjoying his pretty young thing more than he ever anticipated. he's paying your tuition, half your rent and anything else, that you could adorn yourself with. every weekend he makes sure to taking you on a shopping spree, something that wasn't in your deal but he just really likes to see you happy. and also he gets one hell of a show each time.
something about basically paying you, more gifts than cash, dissolves his sexual inhibitions. you won't leave. you can't. he can, if he wants to, be less nice to you. he can fuck the way he was always scared to fuck, do the things he was scared to do with his girlfriends. but you're not his girlfriend, you're his sugar baby. there's a difference, no matter how much he listens to you talk incoherently about your interests, no matter how many nights you sleep over. he doesn't have to treat you like an equal. it's oddly emancipating, the idea of doing whatever he wants with you. the freedom to. unrestrained like he never was. a pet dog without his leash who gets to run wild but keeps pawing his neck, the feeling of the leash.
but he's still restrained. he's a gentleman, he's programmed that way. he would never go beyond your limits, never. when he fucks you particularly rough, the kind that makes your legs weak for days and leaves you feeling the ghost of his dick inside you every time you squeeze your legs, he buys you something particularly expensive. he just can't take without giving. you like it, of course you do, even though you tell him you like the way he fucks you too. he shouldn't apologize for prioritizing his pleasure. you're not his girlfriend, you are his sex doll. the one he likes to dress up in skimpy designer clothes he bought with his hard earned oncologist money.
you're starting to feel bad, kind of, because you're growing quite fond of him. it's impossible not to. he's the only man who isnt a pig. but this... this arrangement negates the idea of anything real ever happening. sometimes you both stay awake dwelling on the possibility at the same time, unbeknownst to each other. his heart beats precariously fast as his hand crawls into your palm one night, wanting so desperately to hold it.
he doesn't know how this thing is going to end.
when his analyst furrows his brows at the receipts from hermes and dior and chanel, he just shrugs. he can't help it, you're the most beautiful financial liability in the world.
19 JANUARY 25
𓂀 PUNARVASU NAKSHATRA EXPLORATION .
🌈 PUNARVASU ELEMENTS .
punarvasu spans 20°00 gemini - 03°20 cancer. its vimshottari ruler is jupiter.
punarvasu's deity is aditi - mother of the adityas, goddess of earth, harvest and fertility. her name means 'boundless' or 'limitless' and she is the embodiment of the infinite and vast cosmos.
punarvasu nakshatra is the 'star of renewal' and has several meanings, some being "good again", "prosperous again", "light again" and "the return of the light".
its symbols are the bow and quiver of arrows and a house.
punarvasu's shakti is vasutva prapana shakti meaning the power to 'gain wealth and substance'.
punarvasu's basis above is air or wind and its basis below is moisture or rain. its desire is 'to produce herbs and trees'.
🌈 PUNARVASU THROUGH MYTH .
mrigashira is the birth of mars and where polarisation, competition and temptation are born. in the bible, we see this with eve biting the apple and adam and eve realising they were naked.
this leads to ardra when adam and eve are finally cast out of the garden of eden and left to their own vices. ardra is the star of effort and represented by a teardrop. outside the garden, they learn of true suffering and man is condemned to pain and to "till the earth" for ever. claire nakti corresponded the tower of babel to ardra, and the creation of the tower of babel is what sets off the events in the punarvasu stage: noah's ark.
god feels like there is too much evil in the world and so he decides to renew the earth and then the earth is just vast seas due to the copious amount of rain and flooding. punarvasu is the star of renewal and aditi is the goddess of primordial vastness. noah and his family were deemed worthy enough to be saved and noah was tasked with building an ark big enough to house one pair of each animal on the earth. another one of punarvasu's symbols is a house.
punarvasu's symbol is the bow and quiver of arrows archers had to release the arrow and go and get it back. noah sent out a dove to see whether the flooding had reduced and it kept coming back until one day, when it returned with an olive branch, signifying new life. punarvasu's basis above is air or wind, which relates to the dove flying to see whether the floods had reduced enough and its basis below is moisture or rain, which relates to the vast floods used to cleanse the world of evil. punarvasu's desire is to produce herbs and trees, which is symbolised by the dove bringing back an olive branch to show the floods were over - later becoming a symbol of peace.
after the whole ordeal, god placed a rainbow in the sky to symbolise peace and as a promise that a flood like that would never happen again.
🌈 PUNARVASU IN POP CULTURE .
mariah carey, punarvasu moon
punarvasu themes are all over mariah's career. @vindelllas noticed that butterflies are linked to punarvasu natives, relating to their transformative nature, and mariah carey's first album that she had creative control over was called "butterfly". this album is also deemed her magnum opus. her album after butterfly is called "rainbow" and mariah also has a song called "through the rain". the theme of renewal and "prosperous again" arises with her 2005 album "the emancipation of mimi", which invited immense success and earned her the moniker "the queen of the comeback".
kali uchis, punarvasu sun
kali uchis is another punarvasu native whose music reflects a lot of punarvasu themes. her song after the storm is highly punarvasu and even reflects the noah's ark floods with the lyrics "cause after the storm's when the flowers bloom". the entire song is punarvasu coded and everyone wanting to understand punarvasu themes should go and listen to it.
she uses a lot of flower imagery in her music and has a song called "i wish you roses" and an entire album called "orquídeas" (orchids in spanish). she also used butterfly imagery on her album cover for "red moon in venus".
penelope cruz, punarvasu moon
penelope cruz starred in the movie volver, meaning "to return" in spanish and is about a dead mother who comes back to life. (ps. i haven't watched this movie yet, but the theme of renewal and returning is very punarvasu).
natasha lyonne, punarvasu moon
natasha stars as nadia in russian doll, a show in which she dies and keeps coming back to life to relive the same day over and over again. this theme of reliving the same day seems to be quite punarvasu, and also extends to the other jupiter nakshatras.
franka potente, purva bhadrapada jupiter atmakaraka (trine nakshatra)
lola, played by franka potente, has to find 100,000 deutsch marks in 20 minutes or her boyfriend will be killed by gangsters. each time she fails, she restarts the day again, playing on the punarvasu theme of repetition and renewal. the movie also discusses the butterfly effect, which is also very punarvasu.
the director of lola rennt has purva bhadrapada saturn as his atmakaraka.
eva green, punarvasu sun
eva green plays miss peregrine in miss peregrine's home for peculiar children. she takes on a motherly role and provides a home for these peculiar children and rewinds time to stop a bomb from destroying the home. all inhabitants are essentially stuck reliving the same day over and over again. punarvasu's symbol is a house and its deity is aditi, the mother goddess.
I honestly think there is something in specifically white english teachers that make them foam at the mouth when it comes to having students read aloud books that contain the n word. In high school grade 10 we read to kill a mocking bird and my teacher was delighted to tell everyone that when reading it in class each student would read a chapter and that the book contained the racial slur and that it had to be said out loud. No one wanted to do that and when a few of the Black students in my class, along with some other Native and white students, were like do we have to its pretty insensitive the teacher then made it a rule where we had to say it or a mark would be deducted from the class participation for that unit since we were refusing to participate.
And yes there was some students who were delighted to say the word didn't matter the context as long as they weren't getting in trouble for saying it because racists will be racist. There was this one girl super shy and sheltered most of her life never even heard her say the word crap when it was her turn to read she literally broke down crying not wanting to say it and how uncomfortable it made her. The teacher just rolled her eyes and got one of the eager racist people in the class to say it.
When this was brought to our principal and school board they dismissed it since they didn't want to censor a book if it said that word it said it for a reason and by that we had to say it. I would also like to add this was a very white school with all-white teachers and a school board in a smallish town and also a catholic school. A few years later when a Native student and a Black student did projects on residential schools and the catholic church involvement, and Canada's emancipation day both students got in trouble for topics that weren't allowed. So much for not wanting to censor things huh.
"Canada's safer than the US" oh ho HO naat really!
Sidebar; It's time to let a book other than To Kill a Mockingbird be read in schools about racism. Is it a good book? Sure, and I'm not saying don't read it. But I shouldn't have to read from the perspective of a "good white" to get my only acceptable reference to dealing with racism in this world (and then told I HAVE to say the slur from the otherwise sanitized perspective, which apparently is still considered ban-able). But your English teacher wouldn't wanna hear that 😭 I'm sorry that someone like that was even allowed to be around kids, let alone teach.
Juneteenth is a Black American holiday.
We call Juneteenth many things: Black Independence Day, Freedom Day, Emancipation Day, Jubilee Day. We celebrate and honor our ancestors.
December 31 is recognized as Watch Night or Freedom’s Eve in Black American churches because it marks the day our enslaved ancestors were awaiting news of their freedom going into 1863. On January 1, 1863, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. But all of the ancestors wouldn’t be freed until June 19, 1865 for those in Galveston, Texas and even January 23, 1866 for those in New Jersey (the last slave state). (It’s also worth noting that our people under the Choctaw and Chickasaw Nations wouldn’t be freed until April 28, 1866 and June 14, 1866 for those under the Cherokee Nation by way of the Treaties.)
Since 1866, Black Americans in Texas have been commemorating the emancipation of our people by way of reading the Emancipation Proclamation and coming together to have parades, free festivities, and later on pageants. Thereafter, it spread to select states as an annual day of commemoration of our people in our homeland.
Here’s a short silent video filmed during the 1925 Juneteenth celebration in Beaumont, Texas:
youtube
(It’s also worth noting that the Mascogos tribe in Coahuila, Mexico celebrate Juneteenth over there as well. Quick history lesson: A total of 305,326 Africans were shipped to the US to be enslaved alongside of American Indians who were already or would become enslaved as prisoners of war, as well as those who stayed behind refusing to leave and walk the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma. In the United States, you were either enslaved under the English territories, the Dutch, the French, the Spanish, or under the Nations of what would called the Five “Civilized” Native American Tribes: Cherokee, Creek (Muscogee), Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Seminoles. Mascogos descend from the Seminoles who escaped slavery during the Seminole Wars, or the Gullah Wars that lasted for more than 100 years if you will, and then settled at El Nacimiento in 1852.)
We largely wave our red, white and blue flags on Juneteenth. These are the only colors that represent Juneteenth. But sometimes you may see others wave our Black American Heritage flag (red, black, and gold).
Juneteenth is a day of respect. It has nothing to do with Africa, diversity, inclusion, immigration, your Pan-African flag, your cashapps, nor your commerce businesses. It is not a day of “what about” isms. It is not a day to tap into your inner colonizer and attempt to wipe out our existence. That is ethnocide and anti-Black American. If you can’t attend a Black American (centered) event that’s filled with education on the day, our music, our food and other centered activities because it’s not centered around yours…that is a you problem. Respect our day for what and whom it stands for in our homeland.
Juneteenth flag creator: “Boston Ben” Haith
It was created in 1997. The red, white and blue colors represent the American flag. The five-point star represents the Lone State (Texas). The white burst around the star represents a nova, the beginning of a new star. The new beginning for Black Americans.
Black American Heritage Flag creators: Melvin Charles & Gleason T. Jackson
It was created in 1967, our Civil Rights era. The color black represents the ethnic pride for who we are. Red represents the blood shed for freedom, equality, justice and human dignity. Gold fig wreath represents intellect, prosperity, and peace. The sword represents the strength and authority exhibited by a Black culture that made many contributions to the world in mathematics, art, medicine, and physical science, heralding the contributions that Black Americans would make in these and other fields.
SN: While we’re talking about flags, I should note that Grace Wisher, a 13-year-old free Black girl from Baltimore helped stitched the Star Spangled flag, which would inspire the national anthem during her six years of service to Mary Pickersgill. I ain’t even gon hold you. I never looked too far into it, but she prob sewed that whole American flag her damn self. They love lying about history here until you start unearthing them old documents.
In conclusion, Juneteenth is a Black American holiday. Respect us and our ancestors.
If you'd told me ten years ago that I'd one day recommend reading something from a member of the Wall Street Journal editorial board, I would probably have laughed at you.
----
Haviv Rettig Gur quotes from a Wall Street Journal opinion piece by Elliot Kaufman on the preliminary ruling by U.S. District Judge Mark C. Scarsi in Frankel v. Regents of the University of California.
Scarsi's Aug. 13 preliminary injunction means UCLA "can’t allow a rerun of the spring, when protest encampments denied 'Zionists' access to a main quad and thoroughfare, a library and even some classrooms."
I agree with Kaufman that the religious arguments Scarsi embraces aren't the strongest available and that there are better arguments for the courts to take action. Kaufman and Gur are more concerned as proponents of liberal values and the rule of law than as Jews fearing an attack on religious freedom.
Haviv, a student of history, notes the familiar pattern from Jewish history in his screen capture, but it is better understood in context:
First, understand what the protesters did. They set up barriers and checkpoints, forcibly blocking students from parts of campus unless they deemed Israel guilty of the vilest crimes; rejected Zionism, or Israel’s right to exist; and endorsed the protesters’ political program. These are Red Guard tactics, anathema to the academic spirit. They call academia’s bluff. What university that still believed in its mission would tolerate them?
Second, the anti-Israel fanatics demand that Jews relinquish not so much the tenets of their religion as their dignity and the solidarity that sustains Jewish peoplehood.
Around half the world’s Jews live in Israel, which has become the center of Jewish cultural creativity. The Jewish future, in every sphere, increasingly is built there. To seek to destroy or dissolve the state of Israel, as anti-Zionists do, and leave those seven million Jews and that Jewish future in the hands of an Arab majority that cheers the Oct. 7 massacre, is beyond reckless. For Jews, it betrays a cruel indifference to or contempt for one’s fellows. To demand that Jews take such a position, or else be vilified and shut out, is extortionate.
Fit for our age, the extortion isn’t religious in form. A baptism is no longer the Jewish “ticket of admission to European culture,” as Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) put it. This ticket carried a price, but in Heine’s time the religious part had already become secondary for many Jews who had ceased to believe. It was the sacrifice of dignity—the abandonment of one’s people, the payment of ransom for basic rights of inclusion—that rankled. Many Jews converted anyway. Others, such as those German Reform congregations that dropped circumcision and hope for a restoration to Zion and moved the Sabbath to Sunday, tried to meet Europe partway. Persecution intensified. “The moral spine of the Jews was in danger of being broken,” Leo Strauss wrote. Zionism emerged from this maelstrom to raise an alternative, and dignified, survival strategy, loyal to Jewish fate. Today, campus protesters and their allies in the intelligentsia and activist corps are trying to make the anti-Zionist loyalty oath the new ticket of admission to enlightened, or progressive, culture. They, too, demand to be paid in dignity, and facing the brutal bargain, Jews contort themselves in as many ways as in centuries past. Cast aside your fellow Jews, and you will be waved through the checkpoint—at least until the demands rise again.
In support of Jewish emancipation in 1789, the Comte de Clermont-Tonnerre told France’s National Assembly: “The Jews should be denied everything as a nation but granted everything as individuals.” On a growing part of the American left, the offer stands. To debate whether this violates one Jew or another’s freedom of religion is to miss the point. A UCLA faculty member, the plaintiffs’ complaint notes, saw the message “Free Palestine, F— Jews” scrawled on a bathroom wall in the Schoenberg music building. Janitors washed away the graffiti, only for it to be replaced with new graffiti: “F— Zionists.” What can one say to the naïf who looks at that sequence and sees moral progress in the avoidance of religious discrimination? An old-new politics is being organized against the Jews, and its thuggish tactics more often than not are met with cowardice or sympathy from responsible parties. In need of another spine transfusion, Jews can turn again to Zionism. To what will everyone else turn?
i learned that not only was Abraham Lincoln the tallest American president at 6′4″ but he was the president with the largest hands. Probably the largest of any world leader in history since Maximinus Thrax. I’m talking some serious NBA level paws. Like how Marilyn had legs for days, Abe had fingers for days.
Lincoln’s mitts were, in fact, so terrifyingly enormous that he would often hide them in his coat when meeting with people or slide them into his custom-made pockets to avoid frightening women and small children. Still, a few photographs have managed to capture their likeness for posterity.
I never knew this about Abraham Lincoln but it’s the reason why some historians have later speculated he may have suffered from Marfan’s syndrome, a genetic disease that can increase height and hand size significantly. I believe also included in the list of symptoms may be low muscle tone, which is why I doubt he had it — though slender, Lincoln was a physically strong man who wrestled as a youth and was quite good.
Honest Abe’s Shaq-sized claws are one of the lesser known facts of the late great emancipator and theatre enthusiast. Another would be his voice, which was rather high-pitched and did not seem to match his imposing frame.
Ah, you're thinking in regards to Batlantern au has me both intrigued and curious, Chef.
Sincerely,
— 🐟
Intrigued and curious? I'm eager to sate your dark passenger, my pretty fishy ~
I play with a lot of AUs in my mind that I don't have the skills to bring to fruition. But I also don't think I'd like to see them written by other people because I have such a specific vision that I'm almost nervous to share them. Does that make sense? Likely not. It's okay though.
Long and rambly post about one of my aus ahead!
The one I daydream about the most I affectionately call the "Second Chance AU." Because is Bruce is literally brought to an alternate universe after years of whump. *I put my Evil Chef Hat on*
This Bruce is Batman, but Alfred was not a good guardian to Bruce. He raised him military-style and with tough love, instead of with soft hands and kind eyes. Bruce grows up very touch-starved and socially withdrawn. He doesn't adopt a "Brucie" persona, he's just a quiet CEO that keeps his head down and does good without recognition during the day.
He still becomes Batman because despite all the shit Gotham has put him through, that's his city and he wants to leave it better than he found it.
When Dick's parents die, he takes him in as his ward and raises him as best he can, but he's even more emotionally stunted in this universe so they don't build as tight of a bond. Then Jason steals the Batmobile tires and he takes pity on him and brings him in, too. Then he finds Tim stalking him and reluctantly allows him in on the Batman secret.
Bruce does not want to raise child soldiers. He doesn't make any of them his Robins, instead pushing them to seek therapy and build normal lives and childhoods for themselves while he goes out and protects the city alone. This works on Jason and only half-works on Tim.
Dick resents him for this. He has the acrobatics and early Talon training to be a good fighter but Bruce won't let him avenge his parents' deaths. He still becomes Nightwing but under Alfred's secret tutelage, because Alfred is more than fine with this child wanting to learn discipline through combat.
Conflict arises, Bruce and Dick have a falling out, and Dick emancipates himself and moves out permanently. He's off fighting crime under his own terms and on his own turf in Blüdhaven.
Jason still dies, as a civilian victim this time due to a Joker scheme. In an explosion, in a robbery gone wrong, as canon fodder in a firefight or something, idk take your pic. Joker kidnaps Tim at the same time this happens and turns him into JJ.
Everything is super fucked. Bruce has been ex-communicated from one son, had to bury another, and he did rescue Tim and try to deprogram the Joker-fication from him but it doesn't work. Bruce has spent so much time and attention on Tim trying to help him recover that Gotham stops becoming the main priority and falls to the wayside. The streets are chaotic. Rogues are running around un-checked. Alfred gets outta dodge and considers Bruce a failure for not having been enough to solve the city's problems.
Bruce is alone, and he's dying because during an attempt to talk to and help Tim/JJ, he had an episode and stabbed an unarmored Bruce in the chest and ran off laughing. He can patch up this wound no problem and keep going, but he's so distraught at having lost his entire family at this point that he doesn't see it worth the effort. Gotham, Dick, Jason, Tim, it's all been in vain. He does not want to live to see his fallen world break apart any further. So he lies down, wraps his arms around himself in a fascimile of a hug, and allows himself to bleed to death.
In another world, another universe, Bruce has just died. Not by the same means, but by accident. He was on a mission with the Justice League and a villain with a lucky hit got him in the head. Brainwaves showed no activity in the med bay after the battle and he was declared braindead, so his family reluctantly took him off life support and he passed away.
The heroes, distraught and needing Batman because this one had contingencies but not as many as they'd hoped for, turn to magic and science. They scour worlds that have Batman's they don't need, or for Batman's that wouldn't be missed.
And they find one. A Bruce, despondent and dying in a world that doesn't care for him. They pluck him up, they patch his wound, they save his life, they let him sleep, and they wait for him to wake up.
When he does, Bruce thinks he's in a weird variation of Heaven. Dick is here! Jason is alive! Tim isn't JJ! There's a fourth boy here with his features! What's going on!?
He's told he was taken from his world and brought to theirs. These people are pleading and bargaining with him to not be angry, to at the very least help them out with plans and contingencies for future world-ending events before they send him back.
"Back?" He blurts, looking so very sad. "I have to go back?"
And everybody exchanges looks with each other. They look at him. They look at each other. Because this is the Best Case Scenario. A Batman willing to stay? Hell yes!
Now they just need to figure out why he's so distant and looking at everybody like they're about to scream at him. Alfred offers him tea and Bruce asks him if he's feeling okay. Dick smiles at him and Bruce's eyes get misty. Tim laughs at something and Bruce stiffens. Jason is just Sitting There and Bruce keeps checking if he's breathing.
This Bruce is traumatized to shit and doesn't know how to accept love from these people. These people are also grieving their Bruce, so they're acting a little weird around him, too.
But when he needs to be Batman, he suits up and gets the damn job done, and he's good at it. Almost better than the one they lost, because he's so used to working alone he has to be better to compensate for no backup.
Also, because I'm predictable and can't not have any Batlantern, Hal was in love with his original Bruce before he died. He knows he shouldn't be making moves on the new one, but...God, they look the same. They have the same soft heart. They have the same dream of bettering Gotham, and by extension the world. This one's just Bruce but to the left. And he seems so grateful to be in a world where his family is around, even if it's not his original one, that it's terribly endearing. How can you not fall in love with that gentle idiot?
There's so much more world building to this, and Bruce has so much guilt about being given a second chance with these people, and Hal is also guilty for falling in love with New Bruce, and I roll them around in my head all the TIIIIIME. I love love love this au. It's a personal project so cultivated towards my enjoyment it's not even funny. I love the AU blorbos.
