As an aside, Vintage Computer Festival Midwest this year was held at the Renaissance in Schaumburg Illinois. For all of you on Tumblr, this is the very room in which the infamous DashCon was held in 2014. The "ball pit" had been roughly where Free Geek Chicago's booth was this year, at least based on the visible fixtures. The VCFMW organizers honored this incredible coincidence with what many feel was a fitting tribute...

The Carbon Footprint of Amazon, Google, and Facebook Is Growing. (Sierra Club)
Excerpt from this story from Sierra Club:
IN MARCH The Information reported that Microsoft was in talks with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, about spending an eye-popping $100 billion on a gargantuan data center in Wisconsin dedicated to running artificial intelligence software. Code-named “Stargate,” the data center would, at full operation, consume five gigawatts of electricity, enough to power 3.7 million homes. For comparison purposes, that’s roughly the same amount of power produced by Plant Vogtle, the big nuclear power station in Georgia that cost $30 billion to build.
Stargate is in the earliest of planning stages, but the sheer scale of the proposal reflects a truth about artificial intelligence: AI is an energy hog. That’s an embarrassing about-face for the technology industry. For at least 20 years, American electricity consumption has hardly grown at all—owing in part, say computer scientists, to steady advances in energy efficiency that have percolated out of the tech industry into the larger economy. In 2023, according to the US Energy Information Administration, total electricity consumption fell slightly from 2022 levels.
But according to a report published last December by Grid Strategies, a consultancy that advises on energy policy, multiple electric utilities now predict that US energy demand will rise by up to 5 percent over the next five years. One of the chief culprits responsible for the surge, say the utilities, are new data centers designed to run AI. To meet the growing demand for power, those utilities want to build new fossil fuel power plants and to dismantle climate legislation that stands in their way.
For environmentalists, this represents a giant step backward. Artificial intelligence was supposed to help us solve problems. What good are ChatGPT and its ilk if using them worsens global warming?
This is a relatively new story—the AI gold rush is still in its infancy, ChatGPT only having debuted in fall 2022. But computing’s energy demands have been growing for decades, ever since the internet became an indispensable part of daily life. Every Zoom call, Netflix binge, Google search, YouTube video, and TikTok dance is processed in a windowless, warehouse-like building filled with thousands of pieces of computer hardware. These data centers are where the internet happens, the physical manifestation of the so-called cloud—perhaps as far away from ethereality as you can get.
In the popular mind, the cloud is often thought of in the simple sense of storage. This is where we back up our photos, our videos, our Google Docs. But that’s just a small slice of it: For the past 20 years, computation itself has increasingly been outsourced to data centers. Corporations, governments, research institutions, and others have discovered that it is cheaper and more efficient to rent computing services from Big Tech.
The crucial point, writes anthropologist Steven Gonzalez Monserrate in his case study The Cloud Is Material: On the Environmental Impacts of Computation and Data Storage, is that “heat is the waste product of computation.” Data centers consume so much energy because computer chips produce large amounts of heat. Roughly 40 percent of a data center’s electricity bill is the result of just keeping things cool. And the new generation of AI software is far more processor intensive and power hungry than just about anything—with the notable exception of cryptocurrency—that has come before.
The energy cost of AI and its perverse, climate-unfriendly incentives for electric utilities are a gut check for a tech industry that likes to think of itself as changing the world for the better. Michelle Solomon, an analyst at the nonprofit think tank Energy Innovation, calls the AI power crunch “a litmus test” for a society threatened by climate change.

The Half-Ghost and The Travelers
The Ghost Zone connects to multiple different worlds. So when Tucker upgraded Danny’s computer to route its internet through the Zone to have connection anywhere, it coincidentally also allowed him to connect to other worlds too.
Once he realized this, Danny started to occasionally try out games from those alternate worlds.
Amongst those was a multiplayer game called Ransack. It may not have stood out too much to him on its own, but he managed to make some online friends through it. They were members of computer gaming club from their world’s version of Madison, Wisconsin.
And then one day they completely dropped off the grid.
So of course he tried to look for them. Online friends losing contact isn’t uncommon, but a whole group vanishing at once without any warning? That was worrying to him.
The plot only thickened when he saw on that world’s news that an entire building in their city had been suddenly torn away through a rift in space.
Now he really needed to track them down…
(or in more direct words: a Danny Phantom - Worm crossover where Danny was online friends with the Travelers prior to them being pulled to Earth Bet by the Simurgh, and he sets out to try and learn what happened to them (and, once he finds out, to try to help them))
#could danny actually help them? idk#but having an un-Simurgh’d friend from a world the Shards aren’t focused on can’t hurt right?#who knows? maybe ghost medicine could fix noelle ¯\_(ツ)_/¯#or. well. at least make her death not be the end#danny phantom crossover prompt#danny phantom crossover#dp crossover#worm crossover prompt#parahumans worm crossover prompt#worm crossover#parahumans crossover#danny phantom x worm crossover#danny phantom x parahumans crossover#dp x worm#dp x parahumans#danny phantom x worm#danny phantom x parahumans#danny phantom#parahumans#parahumans worm#tbh i’ve been trying to come up with a good prompt for this crossover for some time now#and this isn’t a perfect idea in the slightest but it is *an* idea#which is more than nothing

Shakespeare Weekend!
This week we present King Henry the Sixth: Part One, the first of the three part play, and is volume twelve of the thirty-seven volume The Comedies Histories & Tragedies of William Shakespeare, published by the Limited Editions Club (LEC) from 1939-1940.
Shakespeare’s authorship of these plays has been in question for some time, researchers believed to have found the hand of at least six other playwrights within the text. Modern advances in computer software have allowed Oxford researchers to analyze and compare patterns in the writing styles and they have determined that the Elizabethan playwright Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593) very likely co-authored the plays with Shakespeare. The plays were first acted in 1592. The second part was published anonymously in 1594, and the third part in 1595. All three parts were published in the folio of 1623.
This volume is illustrated with lithographs by English artist Graham Sutherland (1903-1980). Sutherland approached book illustration a bit differently. Where other artists wanted to create images that do not distract from the text, and appear harmonious with the text on the page, Sutherland believed that too much attention being paid to creating works that agree with the page will result in “Making the illustration merely decorative, and drained from any personality...” On his own approach to his illustrations he writes:
“I believe that a good illustration translates a story into pictorial equivalents. It should not be either subservient to, or superior to, the story which the author has to tell, but parallel with it.”
The volume in the set was printed in an edition of 1950 copies at the Press of A. Colish, and each was illustrated by a different artist, but the unifying factor is that all volumes were designed by famed book and type designer Bruce Rogers and edited by the British theatre professional and Shakespeare specialist Herbert Farjeon. Our copy is number 1113, the number for long-standing LEC member Austin Fredric Lutter of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

people always tell me my art style remindse them of childrens book illustrations and i rarely make kid friendly stories anymore but you know what i need to make some so here
Aria Wewason is a freshly indoctrinated middle schooler of the Island Cities Elementary School in the disastrous and opportunistic year of 2008; smartboards and chunky computers have just been rolled into the classrooms, and on-line video-hosting websites have just taken off in the public conscious, and Aria has one dream set in her mind above all else --- to start a media production club in her final years at her school, and become the host of her own web series!
However, she lives in a secluded and slow-to-the times town tucked in the farthest reaches of Wisconsin; where iPhones are still coveted between the rich kids, and most kids her age still lived off of their parent's landlines and slow-running computers and have little to no access to the world wide web. Aria herself has little knowledge of technology herself, but is determined to become the most tech-savvy kid in her school and show the world her creativity and imagination through video!
Luckily, she's got a team behind her set to help her out;
her best friend since they were in preschool, Bell Mabel, who has access to the latest home computer through her parent's at-home jobs, and even owns her own Nikon handheld
the most popular --- and richest --- girl in school [name here], who after a rocky start in elementary school spent picking on Aria came to consider Aria her best and only friend, with an obsession for trading card games and with one finger on the pulse of all things gaming
a strange and energetic 4th grade who asks everyone to call her ''Tock'', who has a school-renown habit of causing trouble and gaining the ire of the teachers around her, yet is unmatched in her artistic and roleplay skills, and her through place in special education has a curious and strange level of knowledge of the inner workings of the school.... including where their budget goes?!
two IT techs crammed into a small closet the school calls their ''server room''; highschool dropout Ryder MacNamara, the second in command and often the one running around from classroom to classroom helping with the daily disruptions and presentations. Also known to moonlight as the Friday Popcorn maker, and routinely known to interrupt gym class to ''borrow'' the use of the gym teacher's microwave stashed in their room, which usually brings no less than five minutes of her picking on the teacher in front of the kids and making them laugh.
Ruyan Wozniak, a married woman and the showrunner behind everything plugged into the walls of the school. Often only found crammed into the small closet with her army of cables and screens, and known for her unending amount of kindness and patience for the students of the school when seemingly nobody else would listen to them, she has grown to become the kids' favorite ''teacher'' of them all, but when asked if it's true that she's married to the gym teacher she will often lie and tell them that theyre siblings, and she's actually married to a famous football quarterback for some reason
Seth Wewason, Aria's younger brother and classmate of Tock, whos always following around Aria and talking about wanting to be a weather forecaster on their local channel some day.
With the support of her friends and two IT nerds behind her, Aria is dedicated to seeing her goal achieved, and to leave the lasting legacy of the founder of the media productions club at her school! But when the Charter School section of her school --- a hallway blocked off from the rest of them, and spoken to in hushed whispers as ''holy curriculum'' full of classrooms with bean bag chairs and no homework --- begin to talk about forming their own media productions club, will Aria and co be able to defy their odds and be the ones to first the school's first-ever video-based morning announcements, or will Aria's only shot be taken away by the prestigious elites of the school?
#comes included with a very obvious bit about middle school currency wars and going to the nurses office etc etc#ocs#what to call it. hmmmm. lights camera classroom there#Lights! Camera! Classroom!

This is My Life
Trevor Brown
7E1
Feb 28, 1986
J.H.S. 135
INTRODUCTION
"Hello!" I'm here to tell you about myself. I'll be telling you about things I like, and things I don't like. I'll also tell you about past achievements. After all of that you and I shall peer into my crystal ball and see what's in store for me in the future.
CREATIVE PAGE
My full name is Trevor XXXXX Brown. My father tells me he had nothing to do with naming me, he said my mother and her sisters did the naming. I was born in XXXXXXXX Hospital, although home was in Peekskill. That's upstate New York, in Westchester County. My father and mother's full names are Robert XXXXXX Brown and Mary XXXXX Brown.
Now you know a little about me, but don't turn the page yet I will now tell you about my earliest recollections of preschool. It was a great school, the teachers were polite and weren't disrespectful to the students who went to their school. The school was <adjacent to> a large white chapel, that was a church on Sunday. This church looked large from my size. It was fun when we went outside and played on the swings and sliding boards. Preschool was nice but that was a long time ago so lets move on to elementary school.
Uriah Hill Jr. Elementary was and still is a good school. This school has been around longer than you. I know it's at least 40 years old. I know this because my babysitter's son is 44 years old and he went to Uriah Hill too. I also made alot of friends at this school, because of different plays and music concerts.
C o n t . CREATIVE PAGE
This school didn't have many programs when I was there but they did have six computers and Day Camps during the summer. Every once and awhile the music teachers would get together and have a music programs or concert. These programs sometimes had something to do with the season or holidays. These concerts usually consisted of the school band whose players were in the fifth and six grades. The glee club was made up of the fifth and sixth grades and last but not least the 3rd and 4th grade chorus. These programs usually ran about two or three hours, and every time there was a big crowd.
When ever there was a play I tried to get the best part, but if I didn't get the best part I would get up on the stage and show off the character I was playing. This happened the time I played the caterpillar, when the 5th and 6th grades did "The Trial of Alice and Wonderland" from the book "Alice In Wonderland". I had to have six arms and show them off while I was dancing. It seemed like I did every dance step in the book, because that crowd was really cheering when I got through with my little dance. This night the school was nearly jammed with teenagers. These teenagers had come because they saw me in my costume. I had attracted a lot of attention.
I looked forward to spending the sixth grade at Uriah Hill because the Senior trip would be a visit to Boston, Massachusetts.
I didn't make it there because "Tragedy Struck!!!" My mother died!!! Shortly after that I moved to the Bronx and have attended three school's since being here They were Our Savior Lutheran School, P.S. 89, and now I am attending Whalen Junior High School.
THINGS I LIKE
I love acting. I like acting so much because I am so good at it. I keep a straight face, emphasize my words and put facial expressions where they're supposed to go. I just don't know why but Ive just got a knack for acting. I'm constantly being asked to act in different plays and skits. My most recent part was "A Visit from St. Nick " I really bought down the houses down with shaking my belly like a bowl full of jelly. I act a lot with the Video class I'm in at J.H.S. 135.
I have been very fortunate to have traveled extensively with my traveling partner. My first trip on plane was to Milwaukee, Wisconsin when I was 8 years old. I've also been abroad when I went to Europe I visited London, Paris, Brussel and Amsterdam.
When I see famous landmarks and historical places, it makes me proud to know that I was in that place in person.
In London I visited Madame Tussaud's Wax museum, Big Ben, and Stanford-Upon Avon. Stanford-Upon Avon was the birthplace of William Shakespeare. I also visited the house he was born in. As we were leaving England we boarded the ferry at the White Cliffs of Dover. We rode the ferry across the English Channel to France.
In Paris, the sights I saw were the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triophe, the Loure, which is the home of the Mona Lisa. At the Cathedral of Notre Dame I stood in the center of the city of Paris.
Brussel is famous for its' beautiful lace. I saw a lady weaving lace.
At Delft I saw how "Delft Blue pottery is made. The Manneken-Pis attracted a lot off attention.
Amsterdam is a city with about 160 canals and 1,000 bridges. At Anne Frank's house I went behind the bookcase and found the secrets of Anne Frank's world. There are not many windmills left in Holland.
I have also traveled a great deal here in the United States.
Things I Dislike
I dislike sleep-away camps. My reason for disliking camp so much is because the counselors "rough-up"" on the campers. They also read your letters.
I absolutely can't stand people smoking in my vicinity, especially when it's in my room. I've posted a no smoking sign on my room door and I dislike the fact that it 1s not respected. My schoolmates have told me that my clothes smell like cigarette smoke. That's one of the reasons why I dislike people smoking around me. I hope our mayor bans people from smoking in certain areas like I think they have done in New Jersey.
I think that my room is nice and neat, so why should I have to clean it up? My coats are on the rocking chair, my shorts are on the red chair, and my socks are on the floor. I known where everything is so why should I clean up and mess up that great filing system? Naturally, some people disagree with me that this is a good way to keep my room.
My Achievements
These are some of my achievements. I really don't think much about them because it took such little effort to get them. The Cub Scout badges were-like a piece of cake to get. I met the requirements for the Bob Cat badges after studying one night. Each Cub Scout had to get the Cub Scout and the Wolf badges. The Arrow Head badges took a little more effort to get because there were more of them than there were of the others. I earned all of them.
The Baseball medal that I got was no sweat at all, everybody got one even if their team was the number one loser or the number one winner.
Winning different places in the school's poster contest were fairly simple for me because I was one of the best artist in the school.
Another of my great achievement includes our quartet singing "Didn't It Rain" on the radio. My two brothers, my friend, and I made up the quartet. There were a couple of times I was on television singing with the Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. Oh! I must tell you this. I was in the newspapers several times. Many times I was in the news because I won the school's poster contest. A fishing trip on a very hot day earned me the honor of having my picture in the newspaper.
Then there were other occasions when there were write-ups about me in the paper , all good.
Future
Another day another dollar, better get back to my Robotic Factory and see what my Vice has for me to approve. This part time lawyer and part time toy factory president isn't easy. With the stocks I bought in Cindy's Hair Shoppes and Isods money is really rolling in.
My grandmothers nursing home has a private spa, private swimming pool, and a private gym. She is living the good life. My kids visits her now and then. My! I've come a long way from Whalen Junior High School, Bronx High School of Science, and Harvard Law School.
[This paper I wrote in junior high school thirty-eight years ago is very insightful, this was only two years after I had found my mom dead and moved from my childhood city to the Bronx with my grandparents. Clearly there are things that are at the top of my memory that have long since faded. This is the one thing I love about having an archive of your life you can look back and recall details that have long eluded you.
My recollection of preschool was excellent, I was in the Head-start program, which was part day care and part school. This is prior to kindergarten meaning I was about four years old and I can still recall this sandbox table they had that I loved to play with, just the mention of the swings and slides took me outside the building behind the church. I thought our memories weren't as formed at this age, but I can recall my mom dropping me off and how I look forward to spending time there.
The details of the extra-curricular activities I was involved in is amazing! I used to always think due to my childhood trauma and subsequent depression, that I had forgotten a lot of my past but reading this I can see that that just isn't true, from my participation in the glee club, choir, and Cub Scouts I was extremely busy as a kid. I was also surprised at all the press I got in my city, which was more like a town, including singing on the radio!
I have to wonder how my seventh grade teacher felt about my extensive traveling not even having been a teenager for more than a year. I bet she hadn't even traveled as much as I did and she was a college-educated whyte woman.
The most surprising items were on my dislike list, I didn't realize that that summer camp was such a negative experience for me, clearly it was something I had strong feelings about. The only thing that I remember is that I didn't know how to bathe myself because my mom was a helicopter mom and bathed me way past the age where I should have probably been doing it on my own.
I had mildew in my luggage because I knew nothing about how to hang wet clothing to dry out. I have vague memories of playing dodge ball, the pool, the lunch hall and the bunk area. I wouldn't want to do summer camp again, which I never did. #FuckThoseMovies
My future choices were an interesting an amalgam of being an attorney and a toy creator its a perfect dream for my adulthood. Not that I am a fan of the law or anything, but I do love to debate and argue points, and toys are still very much a part of my life, I think it would have made a lot of sense for me to help create toys for children and the kids that never grown up.
There are clearly some omissions, my traveling partner was my grandmother, and even though I don't overtly mention her I do take her care into consideration nearly with art imitating life I was the one to care for her up unto her death at home, she was never put in any fantasy facilities or otherwise.
I also have kids. Now this can be an entire journal entry into itself, because I think at this age I was probably still wrestling with what society expects of you versus what you want to create for yourself. My life has turned out differently then I envisioned it as a child, but no less successful traveling a path that is less traveled and bucking what folks expect me to do versus what will make me happy.

Wisconsinite in California
I'm not going to say I hate working, because I don't. I'm bored. So I need something to do. What I do hate is how much time I'm away from writing. I have tried to write this post for over a week now! I get an idea, that I believe is good, while driving around, doing my job, and by the time I get home, I say to myself, "What was I thinking?"
(My sister hates comas)
I usually just sit down at my computer and start writing whatever comes into my head. Which has proved to be confusing for some of my readers since I am a treble speller and have lousy grammar skill.
(Okay, enough with the bad puns. You understand what I mean)
Now, I finally came up with a story that slapped me right across my face.
*****
Yesterday, I was on my usual morning constitution of walking 5 miles a day around a local golf course when I saw someone I haven't seen in over fifteen years. We had a business adventure together which started out extremely well, but after a year started losing money. I pulled out of the project after a squabble we had about his book-keeping skills. We haven't spoke to each other since.
He was playing golf, and I could tell he didn't recognize me at first, but I knew who he was. So my plan was to keep on walking along without saying a word to him.
Unfortunately, he must have thought about who I was. He threw down his club and came running up towards me saying, "My friend. What have I done to you?"
That widen my suspicious eyes. But, I didn't say anything. I didn't have to, because he kept on talking.
"I purposely ruined our business for a tax loss because my real estate business was taking a big hit after the Great Recession of 2008. If I knew it was going to ruin you, I probably wouldn't have done it." he explained to me. As if this was a perfectly good reason and I would understand.
I still said nothing, steaming inside, thinking if I should punch the guy.
Then he said, after an awkward moment of silence, "Here, take this fifty bucks. It's all I have on me. The next time you see me golfing, come out of the woods or wherever you are squatting and I'll give you a hundred."
I said nothing but took the fifty.
"Okay," he said. "I've got to go. Look for me in a week or so." Then he goes running off to be with his golfing partner.
So I went home, got into my Mercedes, drove to a local barber, and got a haircut and a shave!
This is,
Never Judge A Wisconsinite By His Beard
Jim Hauenstein
And
"Wisconsin cuisine? Is that even a thing?" Sabrina asked. He smiled. "Have some state pride. You know, kringle, booyah, fish boils, cheese curds. Do you have a favorite?" Sabrina took a few breaths before responding. "Kringle... and anything with cheese.” - Amy E. Reichert -
That is my story and I am sticking to it! Like what you are reading? Sign up as a Follower or Leave a Comment I would love to hear from you Thanks for reading Be kind to everyone I'll be seeing you

Ah the Commodore C16! Built to be a cost-reduced business oriented machine, Commodore fumbled with pricing and marketing, which meant it mostly fought with the more capable Commodore 64. Hampered by it's limited 16k of memory and lackluster software library, the C16 and higher RAM sibling the Commodore Plus/4 both left the market not long after they arrived. Despite the faults, it has to be said that the C16 looks fantastic!

Hey what’s up wats ur deal where u from wat u do
Hello! Dog is what's up! We don't have time to get into the full "what's your deal," so I'll leave that to your imagination. I'm really just some guy. From Wisconsin - I've mentioned that in posts/notes before, so I'm not really doxxing myself too hardcore here. What I do is make silly little posts on the internet. And also write music and play guitar in a couple bands. And run lights/sound at an EDM club. And also program computers. On rare occasions I also do some twitch streaming. I don't talk about it as much as you might think, but I also have some really cool hair. That's about it.

It’s Christmas, Danny Phantom!
Welcome to the Superphantom Christmas special! I honestly can’t say I’m the biggest fan of Christmas myself, so this mayyy be a little bit of Santa slander. sorry? I hope to have the entire fic posted by Christmas, but it’s getting a bit longer than I intended for it to be. Either way, I’m having a really fun time writing it. Enjoy the prologue!
--
The picking had been rather dry for the last few months on the hunting front. Near complete silence from murderous supernatural creatures should be a good thing, a chance to relax. Instead, they were getting incredibly stir crazy. The library was almost completely catalogued, a testament to just how bored they were. Dean had turned to cleaning out the impala. He sorted through weapons, bottles of various substances (lamb’s blood doesn’t keep well. Especially when left under a seat for god knows how long), and old papers and floppy discs washed up into seams like they were sand the ocean had swept in. That last one was quite a surprise to find. With their Dad having died literal years ago and their general ransacking of all his notes there was little they didn’t know about his life. Or so they thought, at least.
Dean carried in a light cardboard box. All the technology within it was years out of date.
“Sammy, come look at this,” He shouted as he walked through the kitchen into the war room. Sam (who was rereading and notating a particularly dry book on Australian myths) shot in.
“What is it? Do you have a case?”
“Maybe. I think I found some of Dad’s old stuff, like old stuff.” He said, holding up a blue floppy disc.
Sam considered it, snapping and pointing at him. “Hold on, I remember unpacking a reader with all of Frank’s stuff.”
Sam, god bless him, took less than two minutes to go from the storage room they’d designated as the tech closet and back. Neither of them was particularly great with technology, especially as far as setting it up goes. A life on the road’ll do that to you. But messing with wires and trying not to get shocked was a welcome change. Finally, they had a new task to work towards. The computer systems were much too old to run tech as recent as the 80s, but the screens still worked just fine when running solely on the reader, if a little slow, malformed, glitchy. It was like running twitter on a 3Ds.
Three grey files popped up on the screen. The computer lacked a mouse, so Sam had to tediously click through them on the keyboard. The way Dean breathed over his shoulder, you would think him the younger sibling. Sam double clicked on the first one. A little loading ball appeared, rotating in small black and white increments. The lack of progress bar was a little disheartening. Each tick of the ball seemed to come slower than the last.
“You want snacks? I’m gonna go get some snacks.” Dean left his brother to lean on his palm and attempt to keep his eyes open. A bag of pretzels later the file finally opened. It was an archive of a newspaper, The Spectator. A big red banner ran across the top of the screen, headlined with the University of Wisconsin logo. The front page was pretty standard, welcoming students back to campus and giving their opinions on housing prices and coffee shops. A few pages down in the entertainment section a small clipping on band called the Skunk Punks caught his eye.
“Look at those mullets, yikes.”
“It was a different time.” Dean shook his head.
The real kicker was at the very bottom, barely a paragraph long. Tacked onto the bottom was a grainy photo of a woman and two men, all with iconically 80s haircuts.
Pictured: The Ectobiology Research Club. PhD Students Jack Fenton, Maddie Walker and Vlad Masters have successfully constructed “the first fully functional portal to the Ghost Zone”. Meetings are at 8 daily, all are welcome.
“Ghost Zone, huh. That sound familiar to you?” Dean squinted at the words as if the blocky text might contain more detail.
Sam shook his head. “Not that I can remember. Either way a portal to anywhere sounds like a bad idea.”
The next file took half the time to load, still enough to brew a pot of coffee. Dean set the pot down on the map table, wisely keeping it nearby. This page was full of notes. Photocopied chicken scratch of equations and diagrams, all detailing a miniature portal. Trying to read it cohesively was impossible, and figuring it out in chunks was just as boring as all the reading and organising they’d been doing before.
The third one contained screenshots. This time of emails.

♡ prompt: “i'll make sure never to leave you alone.”
♡ pairing: Baron Zemo x fem reader
♡ lyric inspiration: “you know I’m just a flight away, if you wanted you could take a private plane, los kilometros estamos conectando y me prendes aunque no me estes tocando.”
♡ note: not checked for grammar or spelling mistakes / for OBVIOUS reasons, heavy spoiler warning if you are not watching or are planning on watching Falcon and the Winter Soldier. this is kind of based on episodes three and four.
“we might need to call an old friend of mine for help,” Sam told both Bucky and Zemo. Bucky gave him a look of confusion, “she’s a friend of my sisters. before the blip and all that, she was a working college student. she’s really good at being a decoy for things,” Sam explained.
Bucky sighed, not knowing whether to agree with this or not. Zemo had no say in the matter as he was on a very strict leash with Sam so he didn’t bother to say much.
“well, what are we waiting for? if we need to be in Madripoor soon, I think it’s best we get ahead of the game before it gets any later than it already is,” Bucky stated as Sam agreed.
Zemo had been ‘kind’ enough to fly them back to where you currently stayed at.
+
the four of them touched down in Wisconsin in the later part of the morning. the wind was blowing briskly through the air as they all groaned about the slight cold. Sam was never the one to like the cold in the first place, Bucky for obvious reasons despised the winter climate, and Zemo found the Wisconsin farm scenery to be eye-catching.
“wait, how is she going to help us again?” Zemo asked as Sam put the information of your current house into the GPS. “she’s worked a lot with computers. she became friends with Sarah while she went to school in Louisiana. I think she could be of help considering she’d blend in with the younger crowd without us seeming suspicious,” Sam went into detail.
both Bucky and Zemo were confused on the entire situation but followed Sam’s lead regardless. they ended up in a small town a few hours out of where the plane touched down. your house was surrounded by a bunch of farm land and from the looks of it, you kept up with outside work.
“with her knowledge in computers and being able to blend in with the crowd, she could gather information that neither three of us could get.” Zemo looked up to Sam, “I know Madripoor better than anyone. what gives you the implication that I can’t get the information myself?” he asked.
Sam waved him off as they got to your doorstep. your house looked cozy in comparison to how you lived before the blip. he knocked on the door softly, stepping back almost immediately. it took you a while to answer it but as they heard footsteps, they heard a ‘who is it?’ from the other side of the door.
“it’s Sam.”
you jumped back in surprise. you weren’t expecting to have Sam of all people knocking on your door at this hour. Sarah hadn’t told you that he was even going to come and see you.
“Sam? James?” you asked, immediately playing with the skin on your fingers out of nervousness, “is something wrong? I wasn’t expecting you, nevertheless James here,” you continued as you let them inside. you looked at the third person, confused on who they were, “uh, may I ask who you are?” you questioned.
“that’s Zemo but that isn’t important. we need you for something we’re working on,” you sighed in defeat.
your life pre-blip was as normal as it could possibly be but after the blip, you lost your boyfriend at the time and your family dynamic had completely changed. you were no longer as close with your siblings, you were really never close with your dad to begin with, and your mom was just trying to fit back in as normally as possible without freaking out that something would happen to any of your siblings or yourself.
“there’s a group of people who re-created the super soldier serum and we need help finding out who did it and why,” you immediately whipped your head up to look at Sam, “as in the thing that created Winter Soldier here and Steve?” you exclaimed, a sense of panic coming out as you spoke.
Sam nodded, trying to calm you down before you could deny him all together, “since you still look kind of young and you were getting your degree in computer science, I was hoping you could come with us to Madripoor and scope out the scene while we talk to some people,” he explained.
“Sam, I never even finished my degree. the blip happened before I could graduate and post blip, I haven’t touched a computer to that extent,” you replied. Bucky put his hand on your shoulder, “we really need you. you’re not someone who would catch attention easily and whatever you do remember could still help us in the long run,” he interjected.
as Zemo watched both Bucky and Sam try to persuade you, he could tell you weren’t falling for it but now that he was standing in your kitchen, he could see the pictures of you and your family and probably some friends on your fridge door.
“can I talk to her?” Zemo asked Bucky softly. Bucky gave him a look, almost as if what he said was disgraceful to hear, “why?” he asked back. Zemo pointed to the pictures on the fridge, “because I know how it is to lose family.”
Bucky whispered to Sam about what Zemo had told him and while Sam wanted to refuse, while you were gone making coffee for them, Sam ultimately let him. “do not blow this for us. you’re on thin ice and if you screw us up, you’ll be back in that German prison cell before you could say your name,” Zemo put his hands up in defeat as he slowly walked into the kitchen.
“need help with that coffee?” Zemo asked. you turned around, shaking your head no as you looked through the cabinets, “no, I’m okay. thanks for asking. I just need to find the coffee before meeting you three out there again,” you replied.
Zemo reached into the pouch inside his jacket and pulled out a brown bag, “coffee from Germany. it’s the best you’ll get,” he said as you grabbed the bag and opened it up. the strong smell of coffee hit your nose as you coughed from it, “where did you get this?” you asked.
Zemo laughed, shaking it off, “I’m a Baron, ( your name ). my family has a lot of things,” you nodded, not quite understanding what he meant by that but agreeing regardless, “listen, I know you’re hesitant on going with us to Madripoor but we really need your help. you’d be doing the world a favor by it,” he elaborated.
you remained silent for a moment, “what has the world done for me? I lost my boyfriend, the guy I thought I was going to be with forever. my family and I don’t even talk to each other anymore so why should I help it out?” you responded, not caring if Sam or Bucky heard. Zemo put his hand on your cheek before sighing, “I lost my family in Sokovia. I know what that feels like more than anyone in the world and look at me now,” he replied.
Sam and Bucky looked at each other nervously as they watched you try and contain your tears. they couldn’t exactly tell what Zemo was telling you but they could sense you were actually debating the idea now.
“did you ever move on? how did you move on is what I should be asking,” you asked quietly. Zemo stayed silent for a moment, not knowing whether he should answer genuinely or not, “being alone for as long as I was makes you come to terms with a lot of things,” he replied.
you gulped, trying to push down whatever tears wanted to come out.
“I think I’m over what happened pre-blip but I guess what’s stopping me from fully moving on is that we’ll never be the people we were before hand. what would I get out of helping all of you again?” you asked Zemo, now blushing at how close you were with him, “finding out where the serum is coming from and possibly having peace of mind,” he replied.
you put the cups down and walked back into the living room, “you both owe me something. I don’t know what it is yet but you do,” you told Sam as he and Bucky sighed in relief, “give me a few minutes to gather my things,” you told them before heading upstairs.
“what did you tell her?” Bucky asked as Zemo watched you walk upstairs with an almost mesmerized look, “nothing any of you would understand,” he responded before sitting down on the worn out couch.
+
all of you touched down in Madripoor hours later. you had chugged back to melatonin gummies and passed out the entire flight back to Madripoor. you weren’t exactly a fan of planes so to be inside of one for hours made you extremely nervous.
you were sent off to get some information while they went off in their own direction to get something else they needed. you were told to get back to them before dusk so after you got the bits of information they needed, you met them back at the car.
“your name is now Noel, you’re a friend of ours and that’s all you need to know,” Zemo said as he handed you a fake id. you took it as Zemo relied Sam’s fake information to him, laughing at the nickname he was given, “high-town is beautiful,” you whispered to Zemo. he nodded in agreement, “indeed. we should visit it again,” he replied.
as all of you arrived to the club/bar, you heard the music blaring from outside and figured this is what Sam meant when he said you’d blend in with the crowd. you sighed before plastering a smile on your face and dancing your way inside.
“we should get some drinks,” Zemo told all of you. you nodded as you followed him to the bar. the small altercation between the bartender and Sam had you clenching your eyes shut as he cut up the snake, “please, that’s so disgusting,” you said, trying not to gag.
Zemo could see the uncomfortable look on your face and unknowingly hid you behind him. he knew that small protective feeling from anywhere. the last time he had that feeling was with his wife. Zemo didn’t want you to see anything that made you mildly uncomfortable.
within a few seconds, Zemo had shielded you immediately as an altercation brokeout with Bucky and a few others. you looked at Sam and Zemo in fright as Zemo made sure to keep you safe while Sam apologized for it. he knew you weren’t even mildly used to these kinds of scenes and if he was being honest, he knew in a way this could be traumatizing you.
“Selby is ready to see you now,” you heard someone say. you followed behind Sam and Zemo as he had Bucky right next to him. as all of you walked inside the room, you could see the woman immediately look at Bucky and you a bit more interestingly.
“you know you can’t just walk in here and demand to see me,” she said to Zemo. he nodded as Selby looked to Sam before giving him a backhanded compliment, “and can I ask who that is?” Selby asked as she pointed to you.
you stood stiff as a board as Sam tried to speak up but was interrupted almost immediately by Zemo, “my wife,” he said, now more softly as he touched your had. Selby chuckled, “you wouldn’t want to make a trade for her, would you?” Selby asked.
Sam immediately went on the defense as Zemo denied it, making sure you weren’t in her plane view anymore. Sam made sure that you were okay before returning back to the conversation at hand and within a few mere seconds, the once calm conversation turned deadly as Sam’s phone had went off and caused the domino affect to follow. Selby was now dead and all of your phones pinged off with money now on your heads for killing Selby.
“see! this why I didn’t want to do this!” you screamed to them as you chucked your heels to the side and slipping on your trusty Crocs that you had put inside of you bag, “now you’ve dragged me into things I have no idea about,” you continued to scream as you followed Zemo out the door.
he could tell you were on the verge of a panic attack as all of you ran in separate directions. Sam had given you a gun to protect yourself with. you weren’t the one to use a gun for anything so to even be carrying it around terrified the shit out of you.
you could tell that if you didn’t even cause a commotion to get the people to disperse, you’d be dead in a few minutes. you shot at the air, hoping no one got hurt in the process as everyone ducked for cover. you let out a shout as the bullets rang off into the air, making you drop the gun as soon as your rounds were finished.
all of you landed in some alley as you stood up against the building, trying to catch your breaths in the process. Zemo immediately asked if you were okay and reassured you that you were no longer in harm. you were safe....for the moment; however, he knew that wouldn’t last as long as he’d hope as he knew that you were now apart of their vigilante group whether you wanted to be or not.
after you met the infamous Sharon Carter, she had brought all of you to her place. she could sense that you did not belong in the group as she noticed how panicked you were by the entire situation. you hadn’t said a word after introducing yourself to her and frankly, she was concerned for you.
“I have clothes upstairs you could change into. I get the feeling you aren’t in the mood to party so you could stay on the second level until it ends.”
you thanked her, grabbing your bag and walking up the stairs. you landed inside of a room as the clothes were inside of the closet. you quickly slipped on the athleisure wear and sat on the bed, trying to calm yourself down from the previous events.
“you okay?” you heard Zemo say from the door. you didn’t respond as you remained looking at your shaky hands, “hey,” he whispered, bending down on one knee looking at you.
“do I look okay?” you replied a bit hastily, “I have money on my head for something I didn’t even do. I’m a criminal now, Zemo. I had no intentions of ever becoming what I am now. I just don’t understand why any of you would do this to someone who was still recovering from the blip!” you exclaimed as tears ran down your face.
Zemo sighed, seeing the look of hurt, distrust, and panic all over your face. he had no idea you’d be this upset with the entire situation but seeing as you looked at the text that had your face with the wanted sign over it, he could tell you were realizing the severity of the situation.
“what do I even tell my mom? my siblings?” you asked, “they have no idea of any of this and now I’m some criminal with a target over my head.” Zemo grabbed your hand and rubbed it softly with his thumb, “I know and after all of this is over, you’ll be free to do whatever you want. you just have to stick through this. we need you here,” he replied.
you growled, “and what do I get out of it? trauma? therapy again?” you retorted. Zemo shook his head as you unknowingly slipped to his side and cried to his shoulder, “possibly but at least you’ll have people by your side this time. I’ll make sure you’ll never have to be by yourself again,” he said.
you looked at him through tear stained eyes and nodded as he brought you in for an embrace. you were comforted by the cologne he was wearing as he sang softly in your ear. it sounded like some lullaby you would’ve heard as a kid.
“promise?” you asked him. Zemo nodded, bending down to give you a kiss. you quickly reciprocated the kiss and had Zemo hold you close as the two of you remained kissing each other, “promise,” he murmured against your lips.
from the crack of the door, Sam and Bucky wanted to interrupt you in order to kill Zemo for even thinking of kissing you but from down the hall, Sharon warned that it wasn’t any of their business to do such a thing.
Sam knew that he had all the consequences falling on him if something happened to you and being that you were now a wanted woman for the killing of Selby, the very least he could do is let you have this with Zemo. he might’ve hated his guts like it was nobodies business but for the time being, you were calm and not trying to kill him or Bucky.
