Lords of Gondolin Baking With You For The Holidays
Tumblr media
Requests: May I request a baking with the Lords of gondolin for the festive season, sounds both fun and chaotic. Would there be anything to eat other then a mouthful of flour you threw at each other? Probably not. Unless you feel like eating cinnamon goop and crunchy burnt cookies. – anon
A/N: I really enjoyed writing this request, especially with Christmas approaching and the baking season in the air. Thanks for this request anon. Enjoy!

Tumblr media
Galdor
◇ He’s just too good when it comes to averaging ingredients, though he often got distracted by your playful antics each time you tried to eat the ingredients or break his concentration as he poured the vanilla syrup or honey. “Are you trying to sabotage my cookies?” he’ll whine when you throw flour at him.
◇ Might realise too late that you’re missing one of the ingredients—powdered sugar—and have to make a quick rush to the market. This unfortunately turns into a shopping spree where you two would return with extra ingredients.
◇ You’re the one to start a fight while Galdor is attempting to maintain the peace and his station clean, so your extra flour and eggs don’t end up in his bowl of cake batter. At some point, he got dragged into your ruffian behaviour and ended up covered in flour.
◇ Despite being the one making the cake and cookies, his knack for ‘quality control’ resulted in him tasting the batter/dough too often.
◇ When the first batch did come out of the oven, it was burnt which left you questioning all of Galdor’s ‘phenomenal’ cooking abilities he was renowned for. “I thought you were a great chef?” “I am, but when I have a little mouse in the kitchen, what else to expect?”
◇ Offended. At least there were a few cookies saved from the extra crispiness and the cake was decent to still enjoy your day’s labour.
Tumblr media
Ecthelion
◇ He takes baking for the holidays the same as any military operation—detailed with a precise layout, and no straying from the outline. You will be gently scolded each time you attempt to do your own thing. Like measuring without measuring cups and spoon. He doesn’t do the whole ‘pour until your ancestors tell you to stop.’
◇ But Thel being Thel, still couldn’t resist breaking his own rules when the chocolate chip cookie dough was looking delicious and sticking his fingers to scoop a dollop. “Just checking to make sure they’re not poisoned.” As he shoves a spoonful in his mouth.
◇ You somehow managed to end up with too much dough? despite the way he was eating the dough each time you turned your back. He decided that you should share it, leading to an impromptu cookie giveaway.
◇ Spends a good portion of the evening walking through the streets of Gondolin handing cookies on trays to the citizens and his servants. Even Turgon is happy to receive his batch of cookies for the holidays.
◇ When it came to decorating, he took pride in it, the same way he takes pride in his appearance. He is in charge of the designs and hands out a sheet of paper filled with patterns for you to follow. Do not diverge from the original patterns, you’re ruining the aesthetic.
◇ At least in the end, you had the perfect batch of cookies to sit by the fireplace and eat with a nice glass of milk.
Tumblr media
Glorfindel
◇ You’re never getting anything done on time, and surely your cake or cookies will be burnt because of his distractions. Which leads to you making a fresh batch and shooing him out the kitchen. He comes right back after sneaking in.
◇ Eats the dough like it’s food and gets all puzzled when you scold him for reducing the volume. “Laurë! We’ll have none by the time you’re finished! And you’ll get sick if you continue to eat the raw dough!”
◇ With a mouth full of dough, he looked hurt that you would deny him the right to taste-test the desserts to ensure the quality was up to his standards. “I just wanted to taste the cookies. Don’t have to be so mean.” Guilt trips you into letting him eat more.
◇ You obviously end up with less dough and Laurë earns himself a tummy ache from how much dough he ate raw. Some dough had less of certain ingredients while others had too much because he pulled you to dance in the middle of measuring, so you forgot and mismanaged.
◇ You end up with cookies that were undercooked, overcooked and er…not cookies? Still, it didn’t bother him because he was willing to enjoy the hard labour of your fantastic baking.
◇ “Baking is an art, and although it may not appear the way we intended, there is merit and beauty in the outcome.” He would cheer as he plopped a cookie into his mouth while you stood there with an exasperated look. Like he was the reason for the cookies being that way.
Tumblr media
Egalmoth
◇ He wants to make gingerbread houses, cinnamon rolls, a ton of cookies and cake and roast turkey or chicken all on the same day at the same time. He’s elaborate about the activity if you haven’t caught on.
◇ When it comes to designing, he’s in charge and has everything in order, down to how to position the desserts and food on the table. Perfectionist, often redoing the steps to get them right. “Patience is key, darling,” he reminds you and boops your nose with frosting.
◇ Despite his meticulous nature, he loves a good laugh when things don’t go right. The image in his head wasn’t aligning with the image displayed after piping frosting on the cake to resemble the Christmas tree you drew on the paper.
◇ Mentions something about your artistry skills when it comes to drawing needs to be worked on so he could have a better understanding of what he was working with. That was enough for you to dump flour on his head.
◇ Did not take his clothes and hair becoming a mess because he put a lot of effort into appearing splendid to bake alongside you. So, if he had to look like a mess, so did you. “You look cute with all that flour and eggs—I might bake you instead to eat.”
◇ By the time you two were finished, the way you two were a mess, might as well hop into the oven to bake. More ingredients were wasted than used, and you found yourself eating the remaining frosting and dough off your hand.
Tumblr media
Rog
◇ Rog’s all about efficiency, turning your baking session into a well-oiled machine. For him, it feels as though he’s back in the forges, about to craft an art piece with meticulous create and precision.
◇ You ought to expect his knack for improvising, often adding unexpected ingredients into the mix with confidence. “Trust me, mírë. It will taste great.” As he throws in peppermint, nuts and extra vanilla.
◇ Between the two of you, you’re the one who steals dough from the bowl when he isn’t looking or bribes him with kisses to have extra cookies. So easily he falls for your charm because he can never say no with those puppy eyes.
◇ Somewhere in the mix, the oven malfunctioned, which was no strenuous task for Rog to fix. You got to stand by and hand him his tools while watching his muscles flex and look like something to take a bite out of.
◇ With his skills and confidence, you two will end up with a variety of cookies, some traditional, others experimental. “A little bit of everything makes the holidays nice.”
◇ You two made just enough cookies to eat and also share with his fellow Lords and craftsmen he works within the forges. He left the wrapping and little notes for you since he prefers your handwriting suitable for the holidays.
Tumblr media
Maeglin
◇ He was surprisingly enthusiastic about baking, eager to try new recipes with you and make new memories. The entire time, he would stand close by as he listened to your instructions and your patient voice as you guided him on how to mix or measure.
◇ Did have a tendency to get lost in the process, forgetting to remember the baking or resting period, so you might get burnt cookies and overrisen bread. Can’t blame him, you’re in the kitchen, an obvious distraction.
◇ He compares his crafting to baking cookies and wonders how could something so simple be difficult as he held up a burnt cookie that didn’t match the snowflake stencil.
◇ Discovered that you should leave the decorating to him when you explained piping the frosting on the cake and icing on the cookies. Even the gingerbread house was a masterpiece after leaving it in his hands. He designed an entire castle.
◇ When you happen to run out of frosting and icing, or the edible beads, he suggests a trip to the pastry shop for more items which results in Maeglin growing excited at the assortment of decorations and requests to buy out the entire shop.
◇ By the end, most of your desserts are more decorations than cake and cookies to eat. The layers you might have to bite through before you taste the pastry is immaculate. At least he had fun participating.

If all Zong Zi or Rice Dumplings look the same to you, you’re not alone! Zong Zi (粽子) or Bak Chang are a variety of glutinous rice dumplings traditionally eaten by the Chinese during the Dragon Boat Festival (端午节). Here are six types of popular Zong Zi from various dialect and ethnic groups in Singapore.
Tumblr media
youtube
Hokkien Rice Dumpling (福建咸肉粽) - One of the most common Zong Zi that can be found in markets and stores, the Hokkien Zong Zi is wrapped in bamboo leaves is recognized by its dark appearance from soy sauce infused rice and distinct aroma from the five-spice seasoning. Usually made with pork belly, salted egg yolk, chestnuts and dried shrimps.
Tumblr media
Cantonese Rice Dumpling (广东咸肉粽) - The ingredient that sets Cantonese Zong Zi apart is the filling of mung beans or green beans. One can also order a variation with a salted egg yolk. The glutinous rice is also seasoned with salt and garlic oil instead of soy sauce.
Tumblr media
Nyonya Rice Dumpling (娘惹粽) - The Nyonya Zong Zi is the most distinguishable rice dumpling for its bright blue tip that is typically made from the extract of the butterfly pea flower. It is also sweeter in taste and aroma because of its pandan leaf wrapper and candied winter melon.
Tumblr media
Teochew Rice Dumpling (潮州粽) - The savoury yet sweet taste of a Teochew Zong Zi comes from various ingredients such as red bean paste or lotus paste, fatty pork belly, earthy mushrooms and dried shrimp. Chestnuts are also added to the dumpling for texture.
Tumblr media
Hainanese Rice Dumpling (海南肉粽) - The Hainanese Zong Zi’s most distinctive trait lies in its portion. It is filled with generous chunks of pork belly, whole chestnuts, mushrooms, and seasonings of savoury additions like five-spice powder, dark soy sauce, and black pepper. It is also usually served with a dollop of palm sugar syrup, adding a nice balance of sweetness to its savoury and slightly spicy flavour.
Tumblr media
Hakka Rice Dumpling (客家粽) - Steamed in bamboo leaves, the Hakka Zong Zi consists of preserved vegetable filling, juicy pork belly strips and savoury mushrooms. It is also sometimes filled with beans.

I.        In a glass case                in the dark                         in an alcove                                in the dark                in a church in Rome,        in Sienna, in Florence,                                bits of saints mummified like the monkey's paw or                        Daniel Dravot's withered head                                                sat in the dark                        waiting for the faithful                                                to pass by, tourists to gawk at, for children of archeologists                to be terrified by.        Outside the Uffitzi                        one could buy postcards                                        fragments of Bosch's                                                        Last Judgement (1504)                                        reaction against sexuality                        that was creeping        back into the faith – every where lusty, fleshy figures                        were being torn apart, swallowed whole by frog-eggs,        tossed into pits of fire and snakes,                                        onto pitchforks and trees of thorn                while the saved, the fleshless,                                desiccated, loosely built creatures                        closed their eyes and lay upon the ground to pray.
II.
It starts while you sit in an outdoor cafe near the great clock in the ex-Lenin Square, forever at 11:45, while swallows who nest in the ruined eaves dart low, dark sickle-flashes, sweeping, skimming. Your notebook is open, pen cast down. You sip at the tiny cup of bitter coffee-sludge (when you are at a friend's house the old tatik takes the finished cup from your hands and reads the ground-stains, having you press your thumb into the hot residue, always with the curious shapes rimming the inside lip.) There is a smell thunder in the air. It starts when you walk down one of the city's mud streets, the rain coming down for four days nonstop. You stand in a crumbled doorway, a truck rumbles past full of cabbage heading for the market, spraying mud and gravel into the air. The wave-like clouds come down off the nearby mountains, things urgent and low to the ground, overwhelming the ruined factories and caved-in apartments, the one-room emergency boxes families of eight or twelve had been living in for the last seven years. It starts as you walk down the street. Under your boots, laying in unmarked graves, thousands of bodies, crushed and buried, their calls bubbling to the surface. Waiting for someone to hear.
III.
After the first baby in the orphanage you work at dies, then the second and finally a third, you go on a walk. It has been lightly snowing. Behind the city lays the broken rail yard. Even though there is no penicillin at the rail yard and none of the doctors who refuse to come to the orphanage to heal "things" as they call your babies will be there, you walk without a hat in the late afternoon gusts. You climb up through an abandoned cab engine, the iron sticking slightly to your gloves, its wooden passenger carriages trapped under a fallen wall. The train - its olive green and chrome and red 1940s Soviet art deco - slightly covered in wet-powder. At your feet, in the lee of the cab engine, dozens of empty hypodermic needles. Beyond the cab, the twisted rail lines; toppled buildings and other ruins; open pits of crude oil sunk in the ground; a whole roundhouse with the roof caved-in. It looks like a temple. Something holy, but you who never believed in the sacred or the holy, who saw ghosts as simply cultural abstractions. When you reach the roundhouse you find nothing inside but rubble and years and years of snow.
IV.
Humor. An US Embassy worker, an American working for a Foreign Aide organization and a Peace Corps Volunteer run into each on the street. Soon an Armenian friend walks by.
"This morning for breakfast," the Armenian said, "I had Frosted Flakes with milk."
"You had Frosted Flakes?" cried the Embassy worker, "How did you get Frosted Flakes in Armenia?"
"Oh, I bought them at the black market store near my house."
"You had milk?" cried the Foreign Aide worker, "How did you get milk?"
"Oh, I mixed the powdered milk with water."
"You had water?" cried the Peace Corps Volunteer, "How did you get water?"
V.
All winter long you were in isolation
watching it grow. You had given up
on the poetry brought in the 40-pound
box from home. You had not spoken
English in over three months, ever since the first
frost coated your pillow – there was no heat
in your hut, the rains turned to ice.
You wore your jacket and thermals and gloves
to bed and gave up on poetry. Reading
a poet writing about wasted sex no less
in San Francisco was a hateful thing.
Reading a poet, in Berkeley, where they
have everything, speculate on her fat
soul was a hateful, too. Under your floor
boards the dead called out your name, until
vodka, Russian water, kept the their
voices at bay. Intolerable, how clear they
came in. All of them complained,
griped, belly-ached in a language
untranslatable until your perception:
It was a cross between Armenian
and Russian that the old women spoke
down in the market.
VI.
It is sad to see these old people one, two, three generations apart from their children. These haughty, thin old people unable to speak of these things anymore, needing always to speak around them, as if at the dinner table to speak with clarity would make the magic happen all over again. To listen to them submerge their magic, to protect their children. There was a woman, nearly a hundred, who lived in a nearby village. As a baby she had escaped the Young Turks' Genocide in 1915, had witnessed the USSR rise and fall and had lost eighteen children and grandchildren in the earthquake. You visit her, she speaks in the ancient language, the old Armenian words, "God has forsaken the Armenians" – and spends her time looking for her god among the graveyards where 50,000 of her people died in 4 minutes in 1988. You will be leaving soon, returning on a 32-hour flight. Numbers. Something is inside you. Parasite. You will be leaving soon, and she has no more use for the living. Her words drop away, become muddled, confused, a lexicon of secrets, you pass by gravestone after gravestone on the way to the surface, thousands of them, until there is no more room for air.
VII.
Of course, you
take it with you.
It grows hideous
inside you, even
after the Peace Corps'
doctors arrived and demanded
that you are Medically
Evacuated -- the ol' Psycho
Vac -- three days before your
twenty seventh birthday, you
take it with you. You have
grown thin now, fleshless,
desiccated. They do not
even let you say good-bye
to your babies, such is the state
they find you in. On the flight
back to DC you sit next to
a woman, Dutch ex-missionary,
who explains that sometimes,
the young men God has sent
to do his bidding go crazy.
They, who fear for the safety
of their souls above all else,
do not know how to take
care of themselves so far from home.
She knows this, she assures you,
she has seen it happen. As
the stewardess pushes the cart
for the evening's meal by your seat
the thing that rests inside you
gurgles once in agreement
and then is still.
][][
Notes.
This is it, my grand attempt back in 2002 to put words to my nightmare.
The poem starts out in Italy because that is where I learned, for the first time, about the religious fever dream that is Hell, when I accidentally saw the LSD-madness of Hieronymus Bosch's art and it blew my little brain at the implications of such a concept. It didn't seem like much of a stretch to link the mummified bodies of Bosch's righteous in that painting with the babies dying under my care.
The, "the one-room emergency boxes," are called "domiks" and are basically railroad boxcars used to house the vast homeless population suddenly needing protection from the cold. Gyumri was never really rebuilt and 30 years later there are families still living in their rusted-out boxes.

Stop (Saying) Factory Farming article by Hope Bohanec
The Term “Factory Farming” is Not Vegan
Advocates fighting for farmed animals should be proud as we have come a long way in educating the public about the horrors of animal agriculture. Just a couple of decades ago, the only soy milk was in powder form; if you wanted a vegan cookie, you had to bake it yourself; and vegans often ventured into restaurants with trepidation for fear of their sanity– and leave hungry. Now, there are vegan chain restaurants and vegan doughnuts alongside national media stories about caged hens, immobilized sows, and overcrowded cows. The number of animals killed in the U.S. is going down by the hundreds of thousands and the fact that animals suffer to produce meat, dairy and eggs is quickly becoming common knowledge. Vegan is now a household word.
Much of this progress is the result of the strategic denouncement expressed by the powerful term, “Factory Farming.” For decades, animal activists have inscribed the motto “End Factory Farming” into brochures and splattered “Stop Factory Farming” on protest signs with red letters dripping like blood. This incriminating term conjures images of endless rows of animals in barren cages; filthy, windowless warehouses; and animals suffering and dying on manure covered concrete floors —images that are increasingly familiar and available to us via social media.
The ubiquity of these images and conditions associated with “factory farming” has spawned a pervasive condemnation. Everyone, it seems, can rally together and agree that we must stop “factory farming.” But this rallying cry has created an unforeseen consequence, one that animal exploiters are taking full advantage of. Producers who sell the flesh and fluids of animals can simply state that their product is not factory farmed; it’s organic . . . local . . . humane . . . cage-free . . . (insert any number of misleading labels here). Likewise, when consumers hear these offensive two words, they are now thinking, “Oh, but my meat (or dairy or eggs) isn’t factory farmed, I buy it at Whole Foods” (or “it’s organic,” or “it’s free-range,” etc.).
Watch Your Language
I so often hear farmed animal advocates say, “99% of meat, dairy and eggs are factory farmed.” Again, now a consumer will think that their humanely labeled animal products are the 1% that we have told them is acceptable because it is not factory farmed. Do animal rights activists actually believe that 1% of animal agriculture is somehow pampering the animals with comfortable, relaxed, happy lives where there is no separation of families, no painful body mutilations, and no terrifying slaughter? It is simply untrue. ALL animal farming is “factory” farming. As long as animal bodies are commodified, there is exploitation and suffering.
Dangerous Common Ground
The popular reprobation of “factory farming” has inadvertently created a demand for products labeled with euphemistic terms associated with “alternative, small-scale” animal farming. This was not the initial intention of the term. Many groups originally used the term for the purpose of ending all exploitation and killing of farmed animals, as they do today.
But there has been a shift in the last few years, a shift toward “humane” animal farming, and now everyone, it seems, can get behind ending factory farming: the animal rights activist as well as the consumers and producers of meat, dairy and eggs. This is unintended and dangerous common ground whereby the rhetoric of the animal rights movement has been appropriated by our opposition to promote the very products we seek to condemn. Now when we are denouncing animal products with the term Factory Farming, we are ironically repeating the marketing slogans of an increasing sector of the poultry and other animal industries.
“Factory farming” has come to imply that only the conditions the animals are kept in are of importance, and that taking an animal’s life, the slaughter itself, is unproblematic. The marketing experts of the animal farming industry brandish this term to make people believe that as long as it isn’t a “factory” or “industrial” setting, as long as it’s not a mega-size farm, as long as the animal had some kind of minimally “natural” or “comfortable” life, then it’s ok to slaughter the animal for the enjoyment of the “conscientious” consumer.
Many organizations want to “end factory farming”, but still promote the killing of young animals for human consumption. These organizations support smaller farms with supposedly better conditions, but as I reveal in my book The Ultimate Betrayal: Is There Happy Meat, no label tells the whole story and “alternative” farming can be just as bad and in fact, no different from so-called factory farming for the animals and the environment.
Not Vegan
The term Factory Farming no longer implies a vegan message. It no longer necessarily suggests a desire to stop the exploitation and killing of farmed animals, and those who work towards this important goal must abandon the term, or we risk inadvertently repeating what has become a marketing slogan of our opposition. Instead, we should be more specific and use the term Animal Agriculture. This encompasses all animal farming. We must be careful to speak in ways that express the truths that all farming of animals is exploitive, all farming of animals is abusive, and there can never be a humane way to breed, confine, and kill animals for their flesh, milk, and eggs. Let’s shift our language, and the consciousness around this issue, and push beyond “humane” exploitation. It’s time to retire the term Factory Farming.
What do we want? To Stop Animal Farming! When do we want it? Now!

Note
you should tell the story of you and norman baking bread for the first time together. at some point
🧹
alright, but if this gets a little sappy, that's not my fault. you asked for this. /silly
we'd been living together maybe... five weeks at this point? norman's had my bread before at this point, and expressed interest in learning to make it. so when i got around to making another loaf, i was going to make banana bread (i was really into banana bread around that time since it was a pretty new concept, only really showing up in cookbooks once baking powder entered the market in the 1930s. man, i feel old thinking about that...) but i decided against it since norman wanted to help, and opted for a normal loaf.
issues started almost immediately when i asked norman to grab the flour, and... it immediately dropped the bag onto the floor. i'm still not sure how it happened, i was too busy putting the sugar into the bowl. i also don't know why the bag was open when norman grabbed it. but whatever occurred, the result was our kitchen floor being covered in flour.
so we had to stop what we were doing to grab a broom and clean that up, and i had to try my best not to laugh the whole time because norman was deeply embarrassed by the situation.
luckily, we still had enough flour in the bag after that.
combining the dry ingredients went off without any other issues, but then i made the mistake of asking norman to crack the eggs for me. cue our counters, as well as both our faces, being splattered with egg and egg shell. yet another pause to clean the egg mess (and wash our faces)
i had it try again, this time with me assisting it, and we got it done with minimal egg shells entering the bowl.
once the wet and dry ingredients were combined, i started kneading it, i asked if norman wanted to try, it said sure. it tried for about two seconds before grimacing and saying "nevermind," it washed its hands immediately, and then complained about the texture of raw bread dough for a good ten minutes while i finished kneading it.
the rest of the process went relatively smoothly, aside from us forgetting the bread in the oven and subsequently burning it.
essentially, several messes were made, there were a couple egg shells in the final product, and we burnt it. but we had fun (i did, at the very least.) and norman swore it would never do that again. spoiler alert, it asked to help me with the very next loaf i made a couple weeks later. things went much smoother that time.

Ok, you wanna learn how to make the best sweet potato hash browns you ever had in your life?
You need:
Coffee (may sub with tea)
Oil (olive, coconut, vegetable - something mildly flavored)
Cheapest sweet potato at the store
Eggs (I use local eggs from Mike at the farmers market, which are $5/doz but they were also $5 before the avian flu bc that's just how much eggs cost when the guy selling them to you knows the chickens personally)
Paprika
Cinnamon
Garlic (fresh, jar, or powdered)
Fresh veggies (whatever needs used)
Hard cheese
Other seasonings (follow your heart)
Salt & pepper
Bread (optional)
Instructions:
Put on some coffee, strong
Grate the sweet potato directly into a bowl of cold water.
While that soaks, take however many eggs you want out of the fridge and leave them on the counter to warm up. I pulled out three because I needed to use up the last of the carton because I bought a new carton I didn't need yet because I wanted to talk to Mike.
Pour the coffee into a mug.
Drain the sweet potatoes, then fill the container with cold water again.
Get a skillet on the stove. A large skillet might be best, but I use a small one bc my big skillet died a horrible death. Coat the bottom in oil and turn the stove on medium heat. If you're using fresh or jar garlic, add it now. Drink coffee.
Drain the sweet potatoes again. Once the oil is hot (or garlic spitting), press them out in the pan to create an even layer.
Scrub out the grater and potato bowl while that heats up. After breakfast you will thank you.
Over the hash browns, sprinkle one part cinnamon, two parts paprika. If using garlic powder, four parts garlic. How much is a part? When sprinkling the cinnamon, you should be like, "shoot, that was almost but not quite enough to evenly distribute it over the whole pan," but it's going to be okay. Look me in the eye. It's going to be okay.
Drink coffee. Stir the hash browns until they're a relatively uniform color with the spices intermixed. Press them flat again.
Now it's time to get out your vegetables. "Vegetables!" you say. "But luula, I thought we were making hash browns!" Listen. Hash browns are not a meal unto themselves. They are part of a culinary experience and the only way to enjoy cooking is to learn to time out making different things at the same time.
Prep your vegetables. This is the step that makes people hate cooking, so I recommend buying the same vegetable a LOT, looking up tutorials on the best way to chop or prep it, and practicing until it's so quick and easy that you don't have to think about it. Then move onto a new vegetable. I'm cooking shiitake mushrooms and asparagus this morning bc asparagus is in peak season and on sale and because the woman at the mushroom stall at the market is cute. The mushrooms I just cut in half. Drink coffee.
Pause to stir the hash browns, making sure to scrape up anything sticking to the bottom of the pan. If your pan isn't nonstick, you can deglaze with a bit of cold water.
The secret to asparagus is DON'T chop the ends with a knife. Pinch the hard end between your fingers while holding the supple end in the other and bend it until it snaps. Throw away the hard end that snapped off. It will look like a lot to throw away, but that's because most people under-trim their asparagus. Those ends are a gross texture and will ruin your asparagus experience.
Stir the hash browns again and scrunch them off to the side to make room for your veggies. Add more oil to the empty spot.
When pan cooking veggies, the order of operations is starchy > firm > soft > watery. Starchy things like potatoes take ages to cook, which is why your hash browns have been in that pan since the dawn of time. My asparagus is firm, so that's going in next, until it's bright green in color. My mushrooms are soft, so I add them in once that happens. They just need to get warm, really. If you are cooking with watery tomatoes, those go in at the very last second if you cook them at all. Season the veggies with whatever speaks to you. I used thyme because thyme and mushrooms is a dope combo. Drink coffee.
In the time it takes your veggies to cook, you probably need to stir the hash browns once more, and by the time they're nearly done, you should have some good crunchy bits in the hash browns. Turn the heat all the way to low, then scoop the hash browns onto a plate. Cover the plate. Leave the veggies in the pan.
If you're making toast, put the bread in while the pan is cooling down.
Add more oil to the empty spot where the hash browns were. It's time to cook the eggs. Carefully crack eggs into the pan.
If you want cheese, sprinkle it on top of the vegetables. I used Parmesan because it crusts onto asparagus nicely. Salt and pepper the whole pan. Cover the pan. Drink coffee.
The secret to eggs, and the reason you want low heat, is they need to be cooked over easy. If you want your yolks cooked through, just bake a cake. The other secret is that you should flip them when the bottom layer is solid white but the top is still clear and runny. Focus on flipping each individual yolk, not the whites. The whites will follow.
If you're making toast, butter it or whatever you're doing with it while the eggs finish cooking.
Turn off the heat. Scoop everything onto the plate, taking care not to break the yolks. Serve with whatever is left of your coffee.

Ptitheros Worldbuilding - Culture
Tumblr media
art by suspicious_alex
Universal Culture
Sleep
Most Ptithian beds are round with circular pillows near the top placed in stacks, allowing them to raise their upper body and account for wing folding space and tails. There is also a tendency to have messy beds, with extremely poofy or fluffy blankets rather than sleek sets. Comfort and warmth is valued over a tidy aesthetic.
There also is no such thing as a "bed set", the whole "mattress cover, sheets, blanket, quilt, pillow cases, etc". A mattress is a mattress and anything can be thrown on top of it to adjust for sleeping temperature conditions. Royals and rich will steer towards matching, aesthetically pleasing things though. Other sleeping arrangements include: on the floor, usually on a rug/ big floor pillow pile/ big bean bag/ hammocks/ lofted window cushions, etc.
Beauty
Ptithians value health as beauty. No matter conditions or body shape, a healthy ptithian is idealized and is beautiful. Still, upkeep can set someone apart in a crowd. Having washed, brushed fur. Keeping feathers preened and silky. Keeping scales washed and sleek. These are all important. Most of all, having clean, clear eyes and ears are the first sign of health, so all ptithians make sure those are clean before leaving home at minimum.
There are no beauty standards based on gender. Different ptithians can be attracted to different gender presentations, but there is no “ideal male”, etc.
Make-up exists, but make-up is not part of any beauty expectations. The use of make-up is up to personal preference and is usually saved for important events.
Gender
Ptithians can be born female, male, intersex, etc. They have an extremely loose connection between gender and body parts, but it is so loose that when these things do not match, absolutely nobody cares (Typically only applies to children, parents will use associated pronouns until the child can decide). Ptithians come in a large spectrum of feminine, androgynous, masculine, and everything in-between. All (reasonable) orientations and gender identities are valid and are not a factor in anything.
The only place biological sex is a factor is in elite Torian position and within sexist cults.
Relationships
Although ptithians have unique cultures with their own relationship quirks, Ptitheros is still a highly-connected world and some relationship standards are shared globally. In general, ptithians do not have marriage nor do they propose. Instead, the transition from girl/boyfriend - fiance - spouse, partner, etc, is based purely on time. The idea of having to sign a document to declare partnership is foreign and absurd to them.
Because there is no marriage, there are also no weddings. However, partnership celebrations still happen. These celebrations have no standard, the couple makes these parties into whatever they want.
Birth and Children
Ptithians are less prone to complications because their reproductive systems are not evolutionarily messed up like humans. Home births are the most common, with one or two mataems/nurses attending to assist. When previous births have gone wrong or there are expected complications, mothers will go to a hospital instead.
All base Ptitheros species are mammals (live birth), marsupials (pouch birth), or monotremes (eggs). This means they all produce milk. Formulas to substitute milk are on the market for mothers who can't produce/produce enough of it for their children. Low-aura mothers with average/high-aura children or average-aura mothers with high-aura children do not produce enough aura in their milk to keep their cub healthy. Condensed aura powders and formulas are made to help with this. They are inexpensive.
Cub sashes are a popular item to carry young children in. They are especially popular with middle and high class parents in cities. Rubasyn joeys in particular like pouch-carrybags because the rubasyn ancestor species, rubus, carried their young in stomach pouches (Some modern rubasyns still have marsupial pouches).
Funerals
Mankians bury their dead in graveyards and funerals involve the close community.
North Noxians cremate their dead and funerals are family only.
South Noxians bury their dead in graveyards and funerals are family only.
Zuaanians send the dead out into the sea and funerals involve the close community.
Sollians cremate their dead and funerals are family only.
Torians cremate but preserve the skeletons to bury in catacombs, funerals are family only.
Galians cremate their dead or send them out into the sea, funerals involve the close community.
Woariians bury their dead in distant natural locations, funerals involve the entire community.
Chaverians had buried their dead in distant natural locations, funerals had involved only the family.
Taboo
Any magic abilities involving flesh, such as blood or bone magic are considered taboo to the majority of Ptithians.
Most monsters; vindiagos, windiages, phantom echoers, mokvels- vampires and cannibals- lindosts and all the parasitic, teeth, and eye symbology that comes with them. These are all considered inappropriate topics or displays in the majority of settings.
Touching whiskers or scent glands (behind the edge of the lips and on the bottom of the chin for most species) purposefully without permission is considered extremely inappropriate. Forcefully messing with whiskers or scent glands, which are sensitive organs, is extremely inappropriate and can be considered assault.
“Smaller” monsters, like werebeasts and scalaces do exist in the larger society. While working alongside or being acquaintances with these ptithians are considered okay, having deeper relationships may cause discourse. Some ptithians consider the relationships as normal, some are viciously against it. Those in the relationships simply need to be careful.
Ptithians do not like when behaviors, jobs, clothing, etc. are gendered. This does not apply to affectionately naming inanimate objects, like naming/giving pronouns to a boat or a teddy-tion.
Fame
There are famous/infamous names across Ptitheros, such as Vaia, an infamous monster hunter in the Wyndgale region. Royals and leaders are household names. There can be popular entertainers in a region who get hired more often because of the status, but Ptitheros does not have anything similar to classic celebrities, especially not in terms of lifestyle.
However, gossip about well-known names and past ones does circulate. Often local fame drives this banter, and it is not uncommon for rumors, good and bad, to make their way through those who enjoy stirring drama or form obsessions. With flight and callrunes, hearing gossip is hard to escape for anyone living anywhere besides the foreign wilderness.
Daily Technology
Ptithians use an array of aura-based technology in their daily lives. They do not live the classic medieval fantasy, instead, it is much more like an arcane sci-fi. From runes that regulate room temperature and fridges, kitchen appliances, gps devices, energy storage similar to batteries, sound players and production, photography cameras, radios, and callrunes; a runic device that works like a highly simplified touchscreen system.
Callrunes are the most recognizable piece of newer technology. They allow video calling, voice calling, document storage of all sorts of files and messages, and can serve the purpose of older radios but can display a screen. Its only downfall is that everything must be real-time due to the nature of aura-signatures.
There are higher forms of technology, but they are not privy to daily use by the majority of Ptithians.
Ptithians have weights and obstacle equipment, treadmills and similar machinery too, but nothing close to computerized equipment, as all their technology follows a biohull, steampunk-y theme. Although, said exercise equipment would not be super common, particularly found on the space station and at training centers in cities for professionals. This is because Ptithians spend so much time outside and burn energy naturally simply living their life.
Scientific and artistic expos occur in the major cities. These expos display everything from upcoming technology, art galleries, book launches, relic and museum displays, scientific discoveries, and more.
Textiles
Fabrics for a variety of things include animal skin, leather, fur, wool, and all the usuals. Plus plant fiber, leaves, cotton, silk, and various mixed materials made from the aforementioned items and extra agents (chemical or magic). Such as spacesuits, which are made from tampered windiage skin, chemicals, and enchantments. Ptithians are well-equipped to make many unique materials and alternatives to modern synthetic fabrics. As long as there is no plastic involved, as they do not make or use plastic in any way.
Because they never created plastics, all modern equivalent items that have use other materials. Fabric bags, glass containers, paper products, tempered animal skin, etc, there are many substitutes in their society and they are good at getting creative with the enchantments they have at their disposal.
Illness
Ptithians take illness seriously, doctors and anyone in the healing profession are valued highly because of how complex the information is when it comes to healing someone from any sort of ailment, both physical, mental, or arcanological. The specialties are often viewed as a triangle, as a healthy Ptithian is balanced between their physical health, mental health, and aura system health. Having one doing downhill can lead to problems in other corners of the triangle.
Economy
Ptitheros is a predominantly capitalist economy that stretches all kingdoms, creating a highly intertwined money system, workforce, and ease of transfer when it comes to working anywhere for any reason. There are no modern "big business", nor monopolies, only small businesses with the largest being the rare merchant family found in cities. Guilds can be argued, but they are mostly founder-funded or charity.
A large variety of occupations exist, many needed in all kingdoms, whereas some are more specialized. Jobs that require complex education are highly respected and artisans are valued for their skills too, as Ptithians believe natural talent is a myth and anyone is capable of being good at a skill with enough practice.
College is generally not expensive in Ptitheros, although some highly specialized education routes can get a bit pricey. When a kingdom needs more Ptithians in a specific occupation, education for said job is often offered for free/paid for by the kingdom in order to bring in those specializations.
Communication and Transportation
Ptithians have no trouble communicating long distances, not even space poses a problem. They have access to callrunes, radio lines, recorded sound, file transfer, and more.
Transportation is easy too. From flying routes and grounded trade routes all across the continent, snapp taxis, trustworthy mount companions, blimps, small and large ships, and even the occasional aura-train.
Recreation and Leisure
Time off and play is plentiful and necessary to have a happy society. Ptitheros is full of outdoor recreational activities and opportunities at leisure. From hiking, flight hiking, spelunking, various sports, gladiator battles, fishing, trophy hunting, rock hunting, mountaineering, skiing, and more. To accommodate the recreational activities, business pops up to provide places to stay and places to relax. From guided tours, hotels, lodging buildings, cabin sites, campsites, beach boardwalks and private zones at lakes, grottos, beaches and more. On-the-move "hotels" on blimps and trains are also a fun vacation option.

Character Intro: Pherusa (Kingdom of Ichor)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nicknames- The Golly Goddess, Bearer of Fruits by the people of Olympius
Mom by her daughters
Age- 37 (immortal)
Location- Arcadia, Olympius
Personality- She's a bubbly goddess with a carefree aura. She's creative, free-spirited, & close to nature. She's a lesbian and is casually dating.
She has the standard abilities of a goddess except shapeshifting. As the goddess of substance & farm estates her other powers/abilities include karpokinesis (fruit manipulation/generation), juice manipulation, limited photokinesis, being able to telekinetically control farming equipment, limited chlorokinesis (as it pertains to hay & grass), and limited atmokinesis.
Pherusa is the mother of the seasonal goddesses- Thallo (goddess of spring & new growth), Auxo (goddess of summer, vegetation, & plants), and Carpo (goddess of autumn & fruits).
She lives in the state of Arcadia in a french style cottage. There's a few acres of farmland along with a LARGE orchard (meant for fruit production). The interior design of the cottage is very romantic and provençal with a mix of vintage and country furniture pieces, a color palette of cream, beige, tawny, pale blue, & pastel yellow, artwork with pastural or natural themes, natural hardwood flooring, and toile de juoy patterns on wallpaper & curtains.
In addition to the farm animals, she has an animal companion- a female griffin named Honey. Honey is Pherusa's usual mode of transportation when traveling great distances, like visiting her daughters in New Olympus or visiting faraway friends. She mostly gets around in her classic 70's style bright orange VW beetle.
She always starts of her mornings with a session of yoga.
Instead of lotion, she moisturizes her skin with coconut oil.
Pherusa loves her "chickadees." She doesn't play favorites and loves her daughters equally. Pherusa not only makes it a priority to spend time as a family, but also individually- whether it's surfing with Auxo, bike riding with Thallo, or going to the farmer's market with Carpo. They also play music together with Pherusa being a featured artist on The Gypsy Belles' bonus track "Prairie Poets" on their album A Vintage Year.
She can play the acoustic guitar, autoharp, & the dobro!
A typical breakfast for her is belgian style whole grain waffles topped with cottage cheese, sauteed apples, maple syrup, and cinnamon sugar along with a fruit salad parfait & scrambled eggs added with sausage, onions, peppers, and tomatoes. She also likes several slices of lightly toasted white bread topped with butter & different kinds of fruit marmalades. From her own cereal brand her favorites are the summer berries flavor, the vanilla spice flakes, the apple cinnamon o's, and the oatmeal peanut butter.
Pherusa keeps her red hair in a neck length lob. She likes the Glory's Crown citrus and herbal musk shampoo & conditioner as well as the apricot oil hair spray.
Instead of perfume, she prefers to use fruit essential oils (behind her ears, inside her wrists, on her ankles, between her bosom, and on the side of her neck). Her favorite essential oils are the pink grapefruit, passionfruit, cherry, & apple.
Pherusa's closet consists of form hugging dresses, wedges, platform sandals, flowy mini skirts, bright colors, bold patterns, high waisted flare pants, and peasant blouses.
A go-to drink for her is her homemade carrot juice. She also likes coconut water, watermelon juice, citrus infused mineral water, iced tea, peach lemonade, ginger ale, pomegranate tea, lychee-passionfruit boba tea, red sangrias, aperol spritzes, orange soda, appletinis, cherry sazeracs, seabreeze cocktails, and champagne. Usuals from The Roasted Bean include a large iced green tea & an olympian sized fruit punch splash.
Pherusa's favorite makeup products to use is the Olmorfia blush powder in "strawberry crush", the plumping lip glaze in "persimmon" (a bold reddish brown), and the Museology UV liquid eyeliner in "electric shock", a bright neon yellow.
Her ultimate guilty pleasure is a large pizza topped with pineapple, yellow peppers, & jalapeños.
Pherusa's primary source of income comes from her cereal brand Golly Grains, the 2nd most popular after Earthly Harvest. Golly Grains' animated commercials and online ads are quite popular as well as its slogan- "A golly way to start your day!" To help out her daughters, she models for their clothing brand Treis Epochés.
From The Bread Box, she likes the chicken salad sandwich along with a watermelon feta salad.
Some of her favorite frozen treats include pineapple coconut ice cream, mango sorbet, and pomegranate sorbet.
In the pantheon Pherusa has a deep friendship with most of the agricultural deities like Demeter (goddess of the harvest & agriculture) and Eunostos & Promylaia (goddesses of the flour mill). Pherusa is the noná to Krysothemis (Kristy), the daughter of Karmanor (demi-god of the harvest). Her best friend is his sister Karme (demi-goddess of the harvest). Pherusa loves traveling to Eleusis to see her, looking forward to her delicious corn pudding! She even views Eubouleus (god of the swine & ploughing) as a father figure.
She's also friends with Kéfi (goddess of mirth), Apheleia (goddess of simplicity), Oeno (goddess of berries & wine), Thilasmós (goddess of nursing), Anatole (goddess of sunrise), Damia (goddess of naturalness), Elais (goddess of oil), Spermo (goddess of grains), Nymphe (goddess of self-care), Rhapso (goddess of sewing), Hestia (goddess of the hearth), Philotes (goddess of sex, friendship, & affection), Pan (god of the wild, satyrs, shepherds, & rustic music), Livádi (goddess of meadows), Eváeros (goddess of air & the zodiacs), and Záchari (god of confectionery).
She loves snacking on plaintain chips.
Her and Thilasmós often bond over about the attention and comments they get due to their ample chests.
Pherusa went to New Olympus Fashion Week for the first time last year when Rhapso got her & Eváeros exclusive front-row tickets.
She appeared once in a nude spread for Zeus' mens' magazine. Her photoshoot "broke the internet" for a few minutes when the images made its way on Fatestagram.
Some of her favorite desserts are Záchari's honeyed fig crostatas (dusted on top with an extra helping of powdered sugar), Eváeros' ambrosia salad, Karme's peach bourbon upside-down bundt cake, and the orange lemon pound cake from Hollyhock's Bakery.
As for her love life, Pherusa is enjoying her singledom and meeting new people. Her last serious relationship was with an anthousai named Amaryllis. Pherusa has a few dating apps on her smartphone- also having gone out on more than one date with a maenad named Rhiannon.
A couple of months ago Pherusa flew to Cyprus to hang out with Philotes. They had fun at a nightclub, got a bit tipsy, and ended up making out on the dancefloor. Things got steamier when Philotes went down on her in the nightclub's bathroom. Days later, Philotes reached out to her to "clear the air" with them admitting their attraction to each other. Pherusa was taken aback when Philotes offered up the idea to sleep with each other while her husband Priapus (god of fertility, vegetable gardens, livestock, sexuality, & masculinity) watches, without participating. She hasn't given her an answer yet.
Pherusa has a growing collection of Diamond Ave. fruit themed jeweled clutches. She herself was able to get the orange slice one (which costs 4,000 drachmas) while Karme got her the peach shaped one. As a summer solstice gift last year, Rhapso got her the pineapple shaped one!
In her free time she enjoys sunbathing, gardening, swimming, cooking, baking, bike riding, reading, shopping, spending time with her daughters, golf, fishing, and spending time with her friends.
Her favorite meals include chilled peach soup with fresh goat cheese, roasted lamb chops with a cherry glaze, and coconut chicken curry with white rice.
"If you eat today, thank a farmer."

unfortunately, it's hard to interpret this as a good faith argument against veganism itself, because there are several statements made here that do not reflect an accurate understanding of what veganism entails - because veganism is not strictly a diet, nor would the vegan movement ever expect a woman to choose between 'her life' or a chicken's.
"Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."
if, for some health related reason, a woman absolutely had to consume an animal product, such as chicken meat, in order to survive, very few vegan people would take issue with that. because veganism is about reducing animal suffering as much as is possible for each individual. generally speaking, we have much lower expectations for 'perfect veganism' from people with limiting circumstances, specific dietary needs or fragile healths. on the whole, we would still consider that hypothetical woman 'vegan' so long as she avoided animal products at every other opportunity available to her, such as: not purchasing fur, wool, silk or leather clothing, not purchasing dairy milk or eggs, not attending zoos or animal sports shows... etc.
as a person living a vegan lifestyle, I wholeheartedly welcome criticisms of the movement that overlap with diet culture: it's very uncomfortable seeing veganism presented as a 'health' movement, and indeed, it can be 'marketed' by certain people/companies as such, a problem that especially effects women due to diet marketing. but that's really not at all what veganism as a political movement is concerned with, and I would argue the majority of animal liberationist vegan people passionately reject diet culture in all its forms. many vegan people also actively try to combat this image by promoting vegan 'junk food', which there is quite a large market for!
the question of veganism and health is not one that can be simply answered by calling it "limiting", "self-destructing" or "malnourishing", because this is a perspective that is quite frankly inaccurate and founded upon misconceptions. I have never once felt 'limited' by my vegan diet - except for when it has not been properly accommodated externally (such as supermarkets unnecessarily putting milk powder in everything, relatives being unsupportive or ill-supplied, or restaurants not thinking they even need to provide a vegan option for some reason). when it comes to my daily meals, in 8 years living a vegan lifestyle, I have never once struggled to secure a filling and nutritious vegan dish for myself to eat.
the truth is, it is completely possible to eat an enormous variety of food on a vegan diet, including fruits, vegetables, pulses and grains - and it is also completely possible to derive all the nutrients a human being needs to be healthy from this diet, provided you do a little research into the nutritional values of certain foods and make sure you're getting all your necessities. I shouldn't have to point out that there are many incredibly strong and healthy vegan athletes, including women, who have large amounts of body strength and muscle mass, perfectly equal to that of any other athlete or bodybuilder. a quick google search will show you many examples.
finally, veganism isn't a movement that is built upon "feeling bad for the animals". it is not simply attempting to answer the question of whether or not it is 'ethical' to consume animal meat for sustenance. the vegan lifestyle is, ultimately, a political boycott rooted in an animal liberationist stance: the idea that no living being should be treated as "property". the legal and cultural definition of animals as such has lead to incomprehensible amounts of animal abuse and suffering, such as: - complete limitation of freedom; imprisonment from birth - endless forced impregnations and sexual violation - a plethora of health complications and extremely low life expectancy - physical abuse and torture from farm and slaughterhouse workers - psychological distress, trauma and insanity - insufficiently humane slaughter methods that do not provide a quick or painless death
the fact of the matter is, the animal agriculture industry is just that - an industry. it is not concerned with feeding the population, it is concerned with turning a profit - and the way they do this is by enslaving animals, imprisoning them for their entire lives, and then brutally killing them and turning their body parts into products for consumers. this is not something to "feel bad" about - this is something to be horrified by, and furious about. veganism channels those feelings into action: everything from protests, targeted political activism, legal pursuits, industrial investigation and exposés, hunt sabotage, and even direct animal freedom action, such as that performed by the Animal Liberation Front. the vegan diet and lifestyle are just specific aspect of animal liberationist political action that an individual can perform.
many people naturally have very strong empathetic reactions when shown farm and slaughterhouse footage, which can clash very painfully with a lifetime of eating meat and defending those actions through cognitive dissonance and cultural conditioning's placating reassurance. however, I don't believe 'having empathy (or at the very least, compassion) for other living beings' is a particularly huge ask - anything else risks manifesting as blatant human entitlement and speciesism, which is already part of the mental plague that is contributing to our alienation from and destruction of the natural world.
you have already admitted feeling this compassion to some degree, which is further evidence of how natural and engrained it is in humans to care about other living beings. it is only our society in which animal agriculture & slavery has been normalized, industrialized and politically protected that keeps us from connecting with these feelings.
I would argue that 'women being raised to be overly empathetic' is an area of feminist thought that applies primarily to critcizing the expectation for women to have empathy towards men in any of the many relationships that can manifest between them (especially seeing as men are conditioned to have critically low levels of empathy in return), though there may be other and more complex areas where this issue can apply, which are certainly worthwhile discussions. in any case, there are even plenty of vegan people who talk about having low empathy levels, and even those who don't particularly care much for animals at all. even so, their ethical values as animal liberationists are what motivate them to take a stance and live a vegan lifestyle.
Why is it a controversial take to say women shouldn't prioritise a chicken's life over their own? Veganism is not feminist, full stop. I get it, I feel bad for the animals too, but the world isn't all sunshine and rainbows, and as omnivores humans need animal products to be strong and not malnourished. Women are raised to be overly empathetic to anything other than themselves. You can't buy into this self-destruction, be on an EXTREMELY restrictive diet, and call yourself a radical feminist. I thought we were fighting diet culture here.
I will go to the gym and eat a steak for every woman that diets herself into being tiny and weak and skinny, don't @ me. A female human being is not a fucking squirrel. Be in a misogynistic cult if you want to, but don't shame other women for not joining it.

The Global Fish Powder Market is projected to grow from USD 184.1 million in 2023 to an estimated USD 313.96 million by 2032, reflecting a robust compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.9% from 2024 to 2032. The fish powder market has emerged as a vital segment within the global food and feed industry, driven by growing consumer demand for protein-rich diets, sustainable agriculture, and high-quality animal feed. High-Protein Snacks to Keep You Full Throughout the Day
Tumblr media
In the quest for better health, managing hunger and maintaining steady energy levels are key goals. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by incorporating high-protein snacks into your daily diet. Protein not only helps build and repair tissues but also keeps you feeling fuller for longer, reducing the urge to reach for sugary or processed foods. This article explores a range of satisfying, nutrient-packed snacks that can keep hunger at bay and provide lasting energy throughout the day.
Why Protein Matters
Protein plays a crucial role in the body's overall functioning. It helps build muscle, supports the immune system, and even contributes to the health of your skin, hair, and nails. When you consume protein-rich foods, it takes longer to digest compared to carbohydrates, leading to a prolonged feeling of fullness. This is why high-protein snacks are a great option to curb cravings between meals.
1. Greek Yogurt with Nuts and Seeds
Greek yogurt is a protein powerhouse, offering nearly twice as much protein as regular yogurt. Add a handful of nuts and seeds for an extra protein boost, along with some healthy fats and fiber. Almonds, walnuts, chia seeds, and flaxseeds are great options. This combination makes for a creamy, crunchy snack that keeps you satisfied for hours.
2. Hard-Boiled Eggs
Simple, portable, and loaded with protein, hard-boiled eggs are a go-to high-protein snack. With around 6 grams of protein per egg, they’re easy to prepare in advance and can be flavored with a sprinkle of salt, pepper, or paprika for extra taste. Enjoy one or two as a quick snack to stave off hunger pangs.
3. Cottage Cheese with Fresh Fruit
Cottage cheese is rich in casein, a slow-digesting protein that helps maintain a feeling of fullness. Pair it with fresh fruit, such as pineapple, berries, or apple slices, to balance the flavors and add a dose of vitamins and fiber. The combination of protein and fiber makes this a filling and nutritious snack.
4. Protein Bars
Protein bars offer convenience and variety, making them one of the most popular high-protein snacks on the market. However, it’s essential to choose bars with minimal added sugars and high-quality ingredients. Look for options that contain at least 10-20 grams of protein per serving to ensure you’re getting enough to curb hunger effectively.
5. Roasted Chickpeas
Roasted chickpeas are crunchy, flavorful, and packed with protein and fiber. One cup of roasted chickpeas contains about 15 grams of protein, making them an excellent snack choice. Season them with your favorite spices, such as paprika, cumin, or garlic powder, for a savory treat that will keep you satisfied throughout the day.
6. Edamame
Edamame, or young soybeans, is a delicious snack that is high in protein. A single cup provides around 17 grams of protein. Simply boil or steam the edamame and sprinkle with sea salt or your favorite seasoning for a quick, protein-packed snack that’s perfect for work or on the go.
7. Nut Butter on Whole Grain Crackers
Nut butter, such as almond, peanut, or cashew butter, offers a great source of protein and healthy fats. Spread it on whole-grain crackers for added fiber and crunch. This snack not only keeps hunger at bay but also provides sustained energy, thanks to the slow-release carbohydrates from the crackers.
8. Tuna or Salmon Packs
Pre-packaged tuna or salmon packs are a convenient and high-protein option for a mid-day snack. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids and containing around 20 grams of protein per serving, these packs can be eaten on their own or paired with whole-grain crackers or cucumber slices.
9. Cheese Sticks or Slices
Cheese sticks or slices provide a simple way to increase your protein intake. Options like mozzarella, cheddar, or string cheese offer around 6-8 grams of protein per serving. Pair with a handful of nuts or some fruit for a balanced snack that will keep you full until your next meal.
10. Protein Smoothies
A homemade protein smoothie is a versatile high-protein snack that can be customized to your taste and nutritional needs. Blend your favorite protein powder with milk or a milk alternative, fresh or frozen fruits, and some leafy greens for an energizing snack that keeps you full and nourished.
Conclusion
Adding high-protein snacks to your daily routine is an effective way to manage hunger, support muscle health, and maintain steady energy levels throughout the day. Whether you’re on the go, at work, or at home, these protein-rich options are convenient and satisfying, making it easier to stick to your health and wellness goals. Give them a try, and experience the benefits of staying fuller for longer with protein-powered snacking.

Egg Powder in the Food Industry: Benefits and Market Potential
## Introduction
Egg powder is an important constituent used in the food processing industry. The dehydrated product comes from spray drying of whole eggs, egg whites, or egg yolks, which after further processing yields a fine powder that gets easily reconstituted with water. This form of egg offers various advantages over fresh eggs that make it a strong tool for manufacturers across food industries. We will discuss in this article the benefits of egg powder in their applications across the food industry and the potential of this versatile ingredient in the market.
## Advantages Over Fresh Eggs
### Extended Shelf Life
One of the greatest advantages of egg powder is that its shelf life can be extended. Unlike fresh eggs, which are to be stored in the refrigerator and have a limited life expectancy, egg powder may be stored at room temperature for as long as two years without going bad. This has made it ideal for food manufacturers who desire to have a long-lasting supply of eggs without the risk of it going bad.
Other than that, it is also much more convenient to store and transport. Fresh eggs, for instance, are very fragile and have to be handled with extreme care to avoid breakages. The egg powder, on the other hand, is light and can be packed in huge quantities, so there is very little chance it will suffer from any damage during shipment. Furthermore, due to the nature of egg powder, it saves space that is majorly valuable for large food production houses.
### Uniformity and Control of Quality
Same ingredients ensure uniformity in food products. Uniform taste, texture, and color offered by egg powder guarantees that the final food product is the same every time. Fresh eggs are hard to get the same way as all of them differ by size, weight, and quality. Standardized egg powder is used by the manufacturers to get the exact quality they want in each batch.
Ease of Use and Versatility
One can reconstitute dried egg powder into liquid egg simply by adding water. This facility makes it very convenient for food manufacturers because no breaking of eggs, no separation, or then beating is required. Applications of egg powder range from bakery products to instant meals, with the advantage of being able to measure them exactly to create the same dish every time.
#### Lesser Contamination Risks
Due to the process of pasteurization during its production process, the egg powder risks fewer chances of contamination by some harmful bacteria such as Salmonella. This, therefore, makes it a much safer choice for the food manufacturer by minimizing the risk of foodborne illnesses from raw eggs.
#### Cost-Effective
Compared to using fresh eggs, egg powder will often prove to be the more cost-effective option. This is considering the storage cost, transportation cost, and handling of the fresh ones. Lengthy shelf life and reduced wastage add to food manufacturers' cost-saving advantage.
## Applications in the Food Industry
### Bakery Products
Due to the ability to replicate functional properties such as that of fresh eggs, egg powder finds wide application in the baking industry. This binding agent creates structure and helps to enhance texture in foods such as cakes, cookies, pastry items, and other baked goods. The consistency of quality in egg powder makes these bakery products consistent in their texture and appearance, making this a most preferred choice for commercial bakeries.
### Instant Meals
One of the major advantages of such instant meals and ready-to-eat products is the extended shelf-life and convenience provided to the dish by the egg powder. It can be reconstituted and easily applied in a whole spectrum of dishes, ranging from scrambled eggs to egg-based sauces and soups. In such a fast-moving convenience food scene, egg powder presents an instrumental solution for manufacturers who desire quality shelf-stable meals.
### Snacks and Confectionery
Egg powder serves as the base product of the sauce, used as an emulsifier, coagulant, texturizing agent, and browning agent. For example, it is used in the preparation of mayonnaise, hollandaise sauce, and béarnaise. The net profit margin contributed by egg powder varies according to the number of dishes prepared by each category.
### Dips and Dressings
In the manufacture of sauces and dressings, egg powder does the double function of thickening and emulsification. This helps to attain the smooth and creamy texture in products such as mayonnaise, salad dressings, and custard. On the other hand, since it is stable under a wide range of processing conditions, it becomes a friendly ingredient that any food manufacturer would like to use in their processing.
### Dairy Alternatives
For manufacturers of lactose-free products, egg powder is used to replace milk or cream in recipes with practically the same nutritional value but without the lactose. It is often used in non-dairy desserts and beverages where richness and mouthfeel are desired without traditional dairy.
### Nutritional Supplements
The powder is further used in making nutritional supplements. In such supplements, its high protein content and availability of essential amino acids make it an element of great importance. It is added to protein powders and meal replacement shakes for health-conscious consumers who are pressed for time to obtain their daily intake of nutritional food.
## Export Trends
### Global Demand for Egg Powder
Steadily increasing demand for egg powder is witnessed across the world due to the rising trend of processed foods and demand for ready-to-use, shelf-stable ingredients. Growing food industries towards ready-to-eat meals, snacks, other bakery products, etc., increase the demand for egg powder. Growing awareness about food safety and requirement of homogenous food quality during its production process results in increased use of egg powder.
Key Export Markets
The main destination markets of export for egg powder are the United States, European Union, China, Japan, and the Middle Eastern countries. These destination markets are characterized by high demand for processed foods and are building their reliance on imported egg powder to supplement production. Increasingly health-conscious eating patterns and a preference for foods that are convenient and rich in proteins have also raised demand for egg powder in such markets.
Export Potential from India
With its sufficiency in egg supply, and a very developed food processing infrastructure, India can well turn out to be a major exporting nation of egg powder too. Its rich agriculture and competent workforce are added advantages in the international competitive market. Moreover, its geographical location allows for easy access to the principal markets of Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
Government support from India, especially for the food processing industry through initiatives such as the Make in India campaign and different export incentives, adds to the potential for exports in egg powder. With international quality standards and certifications, it becomes easy for Indian exporters to exploit the increasing demand for the product and establish a strong presence in the global market.
### Market Trends and Opportunities
The following are the reasons why the egg powder market will continue to register growth in the future:
1. **Rising Demand for Processed Foods**: Consumer lives are increasingly becoming busier; therefore, there is an increasing demand for ready-to-eat convenience foods. In this respect, egg powder becomes quite useful as an additive in processed food products due to its versatility and ease of use.
2. **Trends in Health and Wellness**: Due to increased awareness about health and wellness, a consumer now looks for foodstuffs or snacks that are high in protein content. Egg powder, one of the richest sources of protein with its added nutritional value, thus becomes a product in demand in formulations where health is a prime focus.
3. **Food Safety and Quality**: The growing pressure to ensure safety and homogenous quality in food production prompts manufacturers to resort to egg powder—a standardized ingredient. The egg powder is pasteurized during its processing to give out a safe and homogenous product that can comply with the strict quality requirements for international markets.
4. **Sustainable Packaging and Storage**: Sustainability in the food industry also impacts demand for egg powder. Long shelf life and lower refrigeration needs translate to decreased wastage of not only food but also energy—both highly articulated elements of many manufacturers' sustainability ambitions.
5. **Innovation in Food Products**: If anything, the versatility of egg powder allows for wide latitude of innovation—from protein-rich snacks to non-dairy alternatives. The possibilities will be endless as more and more consumers look for newer, more exciting food products.
## Conclusion end
An ingredient of value in the food industry, egg powder has a number of advantages over fresh eggs, such as a longer shelf life, easier use, and consistent quality. This therefore makes the application very vast, ranging from bakery products and nutritional supplements to instant meals and snacks, thus proving to be versatile and important in contemporary food production.
The demand for egg powder will continue to rise with increasing consumption of processed foods rather than fresh ones, a great emphasis laid on health and wellness, and a need for safe and consistent ingredients. With a strong agricultural base and advanced processing capability, India has high export potential in the egg powder market.
