Chestnut’s heatwaves were relentless, the sun beating down with an intensity that made even breathing feel like a chore. The oppressive heat seeped into every corner of the house, leaving the kids sweaty and cranky. It was simply too hot to stay inside or work outside. Lucile and Josephine decided the best remedy was a trip to the river. A picnic and a swim sounded like the perfect way to beat the heat.
The trek from their home on the ridge to the cool, shaded riverbank was long, winding through dusty trails and patches of parched grass. The children complained at first, but as soon as they reached the water, all was forgotten.
The girls quickly waded out on their own, splashing and giggling, while Aster lingered closer to the bank. He tossed rocks into the water, watching the ripples spread, but soon the temptation of his sisters’ laughter pulled him in. He paddled over, his small legs kicking with determination.
“Can I play?” he asked
“Sure!” Daisy chirped. “We’re playing mermaids!” Before she could explain further, Rosemary swept in. “WE are the mermaid princesses of the Blue Lagoon!” she declared, her hands gesturing dramatically. "
“What gives you, a stinky human, the right to trespass in our land?”
“Water.” Daisy corrected softly.
“Right,” Rosemary said, hardly missing a beat. “What gives you the right to trespass in our waters?”
Rosemary's sudden loud and dramatic voice caught him off guard. " Um. "
" If you don't give us a reason we'll be forced to drown you. " Rosemary said teasingly.
“What? Why? I just got here!” Aster countered
“It’s just pretend!” Daisy giggled, splashing at him playfully. “Mermaids drown sailors—it’s part of the game!”
“Ooh! I know!” Rosemary interrupted. “You can be a sailor, and we just sank your ship!”
Aster tilted his head, considering. “Can I be a pirate instead?”
“Yeah!” both girls shouted, clapping their hands.
As the children immersed themselves in their imaginative game, Lucile and Josephine took the opportunity to relax, floating effortlessly in the gentle current. The cool water was soothing, and the sound of the river blended with the occasional laughter of the kids.
As the sun dipped lower and their fingers turned delightfully wrinkled and pruney, Lucile called out to the children, “Alright, everyone! Follow me—we’re heading up to the top of the cliffside!”
The children exchanged puzzled glances before scrambled out of the water in an effort to catch up.
“We’ll be heading home soon,” she said. “But before we go, I want to show you something.”
“When your mom and I first moved here, we started a little tradition,” Lucile continued. “Every time we come down to the river, we jump off the cliffs into the water.”
“Oh… isn’t that kind of dangerous?” Daisy asked, her voice quiet and uncertain.
“It’s perfectly safe,” Lucile assured her. “As long as you jump into the deep end, there’s nothing to worry about.”
“Me! I wanna jump first!” Rosemary shouted, her excitement bubbling over.
“We’ll jump together,” Lucile said with a laugh. “And remember—don’t ever do this by yourselves, okay? Not until you’re older.”
“I thought you said it was safe,” Daisy mumbled
Josephine approached, grinning. “Looks like everyone’s in on the big jump?”
“Looks like it!” Lucile replied. “Alright, everyone, line up with me!”
Rosemary and Aster charged ahead, racing to the edge of the cliff. Lucile quickly tugging them back, keeping a careful eye on their steps. She turned to see Daisy still standing where she’d been, shifting nervously in the sand.
“Daisy, do you want to jump with us?” Josephine asked.
“Um… yes, Mama,” Daisy replied softly. But the hesitation in her tone was unmistakable.
“C’mon!” Rosemary called impatiently.
“It’s just… really high,” Daisy admitted, looking up at Josephine with wide eyes."
“That’s okay,” Josephine said with an encouraging smile. “How about we show you how it’s done first? You can jump with us next time if you want.”
Relief washed over Daisy’s face. “Okay. I’ll just watch from here.”
“One… two… three… jump!”

The Marauder’s Era characters as Uncles/Aunts
James Potter-Black - The Embarrassing Uncle
This man is giving that child ass loads of chocolate and sugar, and Regulus is watching from the side without a word.
Will hear the child fart and will start to tell everyone about what he heard without shame, thinking it’s something cute to say but it’s really not.
Will give you a 2 dollar bill because he thinks that makes him the cool uncle and that’s just even more embarrassing.
He will buy you a toy truck/a Barbie house when you’re 18 and think it’s cute because that’s what they played with “back in his day”.
Will pick you up from school and trip, grab the wrong kid, say hi to an old grandma and get whipped with her cane, cuss in front of a staff member, wear a cartoon t-shirt, etc.
Sirius Lupin - The Judgmental Uncle
Will talk about the wildest shit omd
He’ll be at a family gathering and start talking shit about everyone he can. “Yeah you know uncle Barty? Now, you know I’m not one to judge, but apparently his father whipped him because he fucked a man!” And Lily from 5 miles away is like, “SIRIUS BLACK THAT IS A CHILD!!”
Says the most out of pocket things, like it’ll be complete silence in the room and all of a sudden he says, “…I heard Marlene listening to Olivia Rodrigo, but the songs she made back in her Disney days-“
Remus repeatedly tells him to calm down with some of the shit he says because dear lord-
Was at a pool party once and Regulus got thrown in the pool and he went, “Poor boy can’t even swim, look at him he thinks he’s a mermaid…why’s he flapping around like that?”
Remus Lupin - The Wise ‘Old’ Uncle
Knows the weirdest facts? Like why does this man know how to hide a body (it helps uncle barty and evan at least?)? How turtles look like naked? What’s in outer space? How does he know we aren’t alone?-
Everyone comes to him for facts and studying and homework and he’s just a wise old man who looks younger than everyone else yet he’s smarter??
Will say some stupid quotes and speeches from books/theaters as ‘inspiration’ and he’d think he’s so wise and he just had a mic-drop moment.
Always tells Sirius to mind his own business and calm down yet he’s always being nosy and interrupting conversations with a new quote he heard.
Dedicates every single thing in life after something inspirational. This man is saying the goofiest shit like, “Oh c’mon don’t worry about those things! Hey, you know what I like to say? When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!!”
Peter Pettigrew - The Painfully Independent Uncle
He’s shorter than everyone else and people offer to help him when he’s reaching for the top cabinet but he always denies them bc one of the kids asked him for once.
Perhaps he’s independent because no one pays attention to him and that’s just what he’s used to.
Sorry.
Lily Macdonald-Evans - The Oversharing Aunt
No one knows why she shares so much about everything. She probably saw a poster that was looking for a missing dog and she’d talk to everyone about it.
This woman is yapping whenever she tells a story: “So I walked out of the house and I noticed the crunchy leaves and it reminded me of fall, oh did you know there’s a parade during fall? Crazy! Anyway, so I walked to a cafe and got my order and—WAIT so like the girl was really cute I asked her for her number, she was so sweet and so was the latte! Anyway--“
The type of aunt to order something with you and mention: “Yes that’s my order. I told ___ to order but they’re too embarrassed! Kids these days am’iright?”
Mary Macdonald-Evans - The Story Telling Aunt
This bitch be dropping some bomb ass lore every damn time there’s a family get together/gathering.
“When I was your age we used to go outside. There was this one time where I sliced my thumb in half when running! And then I saw the pope and he blessed me with a banana, and then I went back home and ate a knife—“
“You know, your aunt Lily murdered someone once—“ “did you know that uncle barty once beat me up—“ “uncle James ate 6 bees one time.” “I used to go outside and eat raw fish in the pond and I got salmonella. I could’ve died!”
Is making wild ass hand gestures at the table when telling a story and Lily repeatedly elbows her so she sits tf down.
Marlene Meadows-McKinnon - The unexplainably weird Aunt
Will sometimes approach you and smile at you for 5 minutes before walking away.
Will laugh at something so unfunny and will make a bored face when something is hilarious.
Will cut her finger and drink the blood and start hissing at everyone and will cackle to herself. People start feeling bad for Dorcas.
Will see a hot girl on screen and start barking and growling like a wild animal.
She’s just weird and the kids don’t get it, only the elders do.
Dorcas Meadows - The Artistic Aunt
Has thousands of tattoos that all mean something to her and it’s insane how many she has.
When you enter her house she has a whole room dedicated to her work and she does everything; painting, sketching, drawing, pottery, clay art, tattoos, piercings, etc.
Can look at your face and memorize literally every tiny detail.
Offers to do your tattoos/piercings when you’re older behind your parents’ backs because she gave ear piercings to all of the kids when they were little.
Regulus Potter-Black - The Stern Uncle
Won’t let you eat or drink anything sweet after 6 PM.
Will get upset when you sneak out or ditch school.
Very cold but when you know him very well you can tell his heart is made of gold—I mean seriously how can you think otherwise??? Uncle James is married to him!
Has favorites and allows them to do whatever they want. Will tell kids that if they don’t wash their hands the boogie monster will come and gut them. James told him to stop.
Barty Rosier - The Insane Uncle (duh)
Will casually announce to the whole table that he recently murdered someone. You would sit there in shock and look around the table, noticing that no one even batted an eye. Hell, uncle James asked him how it went!!
His and uncle Evan’s house is all dark and almost satanic. They have real skulls, blood and teeth in jars, they have a whole room filled with all kinds of weapons and body parts. You don’t know how they haven’t been caught yet.
They have a ‘plant’ room that they sell around.
For some reason he’s the best fucking uncle alongside evan and James bc he’s just so fucking funny and cool and chill and his kids are too and sometimes you wish they were your parents instead.
Right when you turn 18 he takes you out to make your ‘first kill’…and it’s not an animal. He also shows you how to defend yourself (if you’re a girl/weak especially), and shows you how to beat the shit out of someone.
Evan Rosier - The Crazy Uncle
Is the only one that manages to balance out barty.
Isn’t that crazy but whenever he is…it’s horrifying. (It turns uncle barty on for some reason?? Their kids hate it.)
Is so hot. Every time a friend is over they all fall in love with him. He notices this and he starts to feed their delusions. Every one hates it. You, Barty, and Sirius find it funny though!
One time he was so angry that he legit went out for a whole day, made Barty worried (which never happens), and came back 3 days later in the middle of the night drenched in blood and 50 murders circling the news.
Pandora does not support this behavior but evan got angry at her one time for bothering him about it and she let it go. They’re very stubborn which means he hasn’t apologized and she still brings it up to make him guilty.
Pandora Lovegood - The Adorable/Therapist Aunt
She’s just so whimsical and sweet and caring and nice and cute and pretty and and and
Always buys you crystals and spiritual things that she insists is very good for you and will protect you.
Surrounds herself with those blue eyes (?) to keep off bad energy.
Is covered in tattoos but they are small and meaningful.
Gives the best advice and her laugh is so fucking adorable.
She’s just here to show you that you belong, that you matter, and to include you in everything so you’re never left out bc she gets it. She’s the only one you can come to for anything.

Ao3
little mermen nejilee :3
He didn't really like light, and usually just remained in one spot until the moon appeared in the sky. Pretty much taking a nocturnal kind of life in the sea.
It wasn't as if he could swim for long– Lee was an eel of sorts, in a way, and his fight with another merman some years ago didn't help at all with his movement ability.
The merman didn't really do much in his routine; rather, he usually spent most of the time waiting for an unaware fish to swim close to his cavern, only for him to strike swiftly and eat it in mere seconds. It was rather monotonous, except for whenever another merfolk passed by to try and talk with him, until they saw his round, unblinking gray eyes.
Everyone found his gaze unsettling, and most swam away afterwards– he was used to being alone, anyways. Eels didn't really like being in groups, and he had left his parents as soon as he had become a capable adult himself.
That was alright. Lee was content like that, having a space big enough for him and his things, on shallow waters. He was close to the shore if he ever needed to go there for any reason.
His sleepiness went away as a familiar scent reached his nose, and a smile appeared on his face as he recognized it– many merfolk preferred to stay in deeper waters, but two of them liked to visit him from the depths from time to time.
“Are you awake? I'm sorry, I know it's early,” his visitor said, and Lee had to squint to see him better, usually depending more on his other senses rather than on his sight.
But he loved looking at him– Neji, one of his few friends and part betta fish, was just… mesmerizing to look at. His purple scales were brighter than anything else in the ocean, and his tail and fins were long and flowy, being a lighter shade than his scales; lavender, was it? Lee didn't know how to describe it, only that his heart felt happy whenever his eyes fell on the other merman.
“That is alright, my friend. I am happy to see you again!” the eel replied, moving his long yellowish tail to make some space for his friend, who sat down on the sand beside him. “How have you been? Have you found anything in the depths?”
Lee couldn't remember when they had begun hanging out, but he was sure of one thing; whenever he wanted to explore the sea, Neji didn’t mind holding his hand and doing the swimming for both of them, tasking him with carrying anything that caught their attention.
He was nice to him, and he had never been afraid of his eyes. Lee liked spending time with him, not really forcing him to talk if he didn't want to– the betta was quiet, and only gave him some odd-looking shells that were probably from the way to shallow waters. Neji seemed upset about something, though he said nothing as they both began to arrange things in the cave, distracting himself with that.
That was fair. They kept different treasures from their trips there, as Hiashi wasn’t really fond of his nephew keeping ‘trash’ no matter how beautiful or entertaining some items could be. So Lee kept it all inside of his cavern, safe from the older merman's reach– Neji liked to play around with their collected things, but now he was just drawing circles on the sand, uninterested.
“Are you alright?” was all the eel said, though he regretted it almost immediately; his friend seemed to get sad at the mere question. “Ah– you do not need to tell me if you do not want to. I just worry about you.”
Silence. Neji was deep in thought, organizing rocks around him in a circle and then mixing them up again, moving his mouth without saying anything at all.
Lee knew that sorting usually helped him think, so he only smiled at him, making an attempt at cheering him up without words– after some long minutes, the brunet began to speak, finally looking his friend in the eyes.
“It's just… Hiashi wants me to get a mate soon. But I'm not interested in all the mermaids he presents, and I– I hurt them, Lee,” Neji exclaimed, his voice breaking in the end. “They're so bright my eyes hurt when I look at them, and– I can't control it. But my uncle refuses to listen to me! He says I'm being a piece of shit, and… and he'll try to force someone on me.”
“Everyone knows bettas can get aggressive out of a sudden– your uncle is one, too. He is forgetting his own instincts,” Lee commented, shifting a bit closer to his friend and offering him a hand.
The brunet was too shy to admit it, but he knew how much Neji liked physical affection– it helped him relax, so they would entwine their fingers from time to time without saying anything about it. Lee didn't mind doing such small gestures for him, also enjoying them.
“I can’t control it– but Hiashi keeps bringing in more candidates, and I just… attack. Hiashi doesn’t want to understand I can’t fight my instincts, and brings more mermaids to my cave,” Neji admitted, looking away as he spoke, using his tail to play with the sand under his scales. The eel didn’t say anything, allowing his friend to speak while quietly caressing his hand, knowing it usually helped him feel calmer after a while. “But… I don’t feel angry when we’re together, Lee. I wish I could just stay here, with you. You don't force me to do anything I don't want to do.”
Lee realized his friend had tightened the hold on his hand as he spoke, probably not even noticing it himself– the betta didn't really speak much about his feelings, so it must've been bothering him for a while… knowing Hiashi, he would do terrible things to him if Neji didn't choose anyone soon.
But Hiashi hated going to shallow waters, unlike his nephew. He would be safe there.
“Well, this cave is huge. You could stay here if you wanted! I like having you around,” the eel said with a huge grin, chuckling as his friend ended up hugging him in response. “You do not need to worry about Hiashi here! And if you do not want a mate, you do not need one. We will have more time to explore the ocean!”
Lee didn't have a good vision, but even he could tell Neji's cheeks had a reddish tint on them now. His friend even looked away in a futile attempt to hide it, so the eel didn't really ask about his blush.
“Oh, but I am interested in someone. But he's not a mermaid– he's a merman. An eel,” was all Neji said, quietly accommodating wild strands of hair behind his fins, fidgeting in order to avoid his gaze.
“An eel? I thought I was the only eel you… wait.”
Now his face was warm– he certainly didn't expect that outcome. Neji was the most handsome person he had known in his whole life, and he wanted him as a mate? A scarred eel who could barely swim on his own due to the injuries on his tail? Lee couldn't believe it, but the betta was now smiling at him once more, holding him close in their embrace.
He never imagined that anyone would ever love him in that way– much less Neji, who could pick pretty much anyone else. His eyes felt itchy as joyful tears fell from them, and he couldn't help it but chuckle in disbelief.
“You are. I think that's why I can't just… pick someone else,” the brunet admitted, quietly leaning towards his companion to press their foreheads together, still hugging him. “You've always been so kind to me, Lee. Letting me leave my treasures here, exploring the sea with me… it means a lot to me. I love you.”
“I– I love you too! I am still in shock, I am so sorry… But– I would love to be your mate!” Lee replied, letting out a sob between words yet smiling when his friend– his partner kissed his cheek.
They didn't really say much afterwards, though they did remain close to each other through the rest of the night as it was time to hunt for food– but now, Lee's kelp bed would have another merman apart from him, and the daylight wouldn't be so annoying if it meant he could spend more time with the betta.

_________________________
beach baby
Your freckles were a lot more prominent lately, but that was always something that happened during this time of year when summer was quickly approaching. As much as you felt a little insecure by the the little marks that were dotted all over your body, it came hand in hand with the excitement of being able to do all of your favourite things that just felt better to do in summer.
You were a beach baby through and through. Growing up, you lived in the one house your whole life that was right by the beach and when your family went on holidays, it was always to a holiday house that was by another beach. You could swim before you could walk or talk. When you did learn how to walk, your parents realised they had to keep an extra close eye on you at the beach because you’d always run down to the waves, not realising the danger in your toddler years. When you watched The Little Mermaid for the first time, you begged your mother to turn you into a mermaid so you could live a life under the sea. When you were a kid getting picked up from school, your after school activity was going to the beach. Whenever the school swimming carnival rolled around, it was always you who got nominated to do the races. When you were a dramatic teenager and found out the boy you liked kissed someone else, you went to the beach and wrote his name in the sand just to watch it get washed away by the sea.
Your life had always involved the beach and you wouldn’t have it any other way.
Whenever the idea of falling in love with someone popped into your mind, you always thought it would happen with the beach involved in some way. And there had been a few surfer boys you’d had flings with, but none stuck. They never really made an impact on you.
But Corpse had.
The two of you were an unlikely pairing, the absolute definition of opposites attract, but it worked.
You’d met at a mutual friends house by chance and there was an undeniable spark from that very first moment.
-
“Sitting under the moon is a lot better than the sun.” The two of you had found yourselves in a light hearted argument that very first night. After getting introduced and realising there was a pull between you both, he had eventually grabbed your hand and brought you to come sit up on the rooftop with him.
“What? No way, dude.” You shook your head and laughed, he was everything you weren’t but all you wanted. “The moon is so pretty,” You agreed with him, “but the sun makes you warm and it’s so pretty when the sky is all blue with a couple of cute, white fluffy clouds. That’s the perfect weather to be out and about.”
“If you like going out and about.”
“You don’t like going outside?”
“Nah,” Corpse hesitated, contemplating on how honest he should be with the girl he’d just met but was feeling so comfortable around. “I can’t handle the world sometimes, you know?”
“Yeah, I get it. If someone came up to me and said you can spend your whole life under water as a mermaid but never be able to come back on land, I’d seriously consider.”
“Even after meeting me?” The tone shifted back to the playful flirting and you were grateful for it.
“Shut up and admire your moon.”
“I will, after all, the night sky is far superior.” He was holding firm in his opinion.
“I think it’s all really pretty.” You said honestly, and it was the truth. You were just as hypnotised by a moonlit sky with stars sparkling as you were with a daytime sky.
“I think you’re really pretty.”
He’d had your heart from that moment.
-
You’d actually gone to the beach today and spent a solid few hours there with friends and it had put you in such a blissful state. Making the drive to your boyfriends place so enjoyable, because you were also very excited to see him.
He’d left the door unlocked when you messaged him saying you were on your way. So when you arrived you let yourself in, shutting and locking the front door behind you, knowing Corpse was streaming and you were going to join him.
“Hi.” You whispered, opening the door to his office, not knowing if you should let your presence be known to stream yet. You always felt a little nervous when it came to his fans. The first time you joined him in a stream, all you could concentrate on was the amount of messages that stated how you were exactly wrong for Corpse. How you were the opposite to who he should be with. From there, it only progressed. You saw the hate comments and negative things that some of them had to say about you and it hurt.
“She’s here!” Corpse announced, so at least it was known to them that you would be joining him at some point, they had some warning and you hoped it meant you would receive a warmer welcome. “Hey, baby, get over here.” He opened his arms and you sat down on his lap, greeting him with a kiss before you both brought your attention back to his stream.
“Hi guys!” You greeted the stream, cautiously looking over the influx of messages, waiting for something negative but it seemed they were asking you about something. “I can see you guys asking, but I don’t really know what you’re talking about...” You trailed off before looking at Corpse. “What were you talking about?”
“Oh...” He started, “we were talking about an anime. (Y/N) isn’t really into anime, guys.” He laughed and you smiled but you could feel the anxiety start to build, you just knew this was going to cause a wave of hate to you.
“Hey, I loved Sailor Moon and Pokemon when I was a kid.” You attempted to make a joke, thinking it would gain approval of his fans but it only caused them to react worse.
The chat started moving faster, messages of,
‘LMAO of course she doesn’t know what we’re talking about’
‘Did she really just say Pokemon? She’s fucking basic’
‘What a fucking dumbass’
‘Dump her ass Corpse’
‘Ugh why the fuck did she come?’
‘WE DONT WANT YOU HERE’
‘Fuck off (Y/N)’
‘Corpse you can do so much better’
You could feel the tears welling up, each comment being another jab and you knew you had to leave or you would cry right there and they’d all hear just how they had gotten to you. Quickly, you got up, ignoring Corpse calling after you and trying to reach for you to bring you back to him.
Making your way to the bathroom, you washed your face in an attempt to calm yourself but it didn’t work at all. So instead, you sunk to the floor and let yourself cry. You couldn’t understand why they hated you, you loved him so much for exactly who he was, just as they did. Couldn’t they be happy if who he was with made him happy? Negative thoughts were swirling your mind. They were getting to you.
“(Y/N)?” Corpse cracked the door open, his face full of worry as he stepped inside the bathroom. “Oh, baby, hey, hey,” He was by your side in a moment, his hands finding your sun kissed cheeks as he left a kiss against your head before finding your vision. “I saw what they were saying. They’re wrong.”
“But what if they’re not, Corpse?” You couldn’t help but to argue back. “You deserve someone better for you.”
“Stop it, stop right now.”
“No, I mean, look at us... We’re complete opposites.”
“And so?” He responded. “Do you love me?”
“Yes, of course I do.”
“That’s all that matters.” He told you, and you knew he was right, it was just the hate comments were really playing on your mind.
“Is it, though? Don’t you want someone else?”
“No. Fuck no.” He wrapped his arms around you then, he knew you really needed reassurance right now and he was going to give it to you. “You’re fucking perfect, baby. My beach baby, I only want you.” He told you, bringing you onto his lap once more, only now you were on the bathroom floor. You wrapped your legs and arms around him, needing to be close to him.
“Please don’t leave me.” Your voice was barely audible when you’d whispered that but he heard it and it crushed his heart to know it was his audience that had made you feel this way.
“I won’t, ever.” He assured you, he was cradling you with a force now, ever so slightly rocking the two of you back and forth. “You don’t ever have to ask me that, I’m not going anywhere.”

Deep blue sea [Yandere!Shark Merman x Reader - Short Fanfiction]:
You've put yourself in this situation, and even if the consequences may seem unfair, you should know better than to whine about it, you should know about now you don't have the right to complain about something you brought to yourself.
That's what you kept telling yourself, everyday, every hour of each day, and it seems to be a prominent thought even in a moment like this.
Every time you go underwater, you can't help but feel a deep connection with the submerged world around you. So much color and wild beauty that if makes you feel like you might as well not be on Earth anymore, it makes you feel like you're on a different planet.
Like you're in a different realm with wild creatures that hold both beauty and death in them, as marine creatures can be often quite unforgiving to each other, or unwanted visitors.
The alien-like ambience you feel while diving it's probably the most comforting thing in your job, if not the only comforting thing about your whole life.
Just like an old sailor, at sea you feel at home, and at home, you don't feel the same. But in your case, you feel like nothing whenever you come back to your house, and a "home" it's a place you have never really been in, so how can you describe the feeling you get when you're diving deep underwater, as something you never understood?
Who knows, maybe it was just a feeling you got, after all, all your team thinks you're too emotional over the ocean. Some would call you an insane person to be so attached to a body of water.
Yet it doesn't matter what the truth to your case may be, because it's whenever the embrace of said body of water fills your senses it's when you truly feel alive again.
That comforting embrace, as if the immense ocean was truly hugging you and relaxing your muscles.
That comforting, deadly embrace was what felt like home to you. And despite everyone else's warnings, you felt like it was your time to be one with the ocean.
It has been a long, unfortunate ride for you. And as I said before, it's not like you were planning on going back home today.
No, you refused to keep feeling empty at your empty house, going by every single day in your empty life-
It was time for a change. It was time for something different. Some peace for once, something that you wouldn't regret.
Or well, wouldn't be capable of regretting anyway.
Your plan was almost perfect, right? I mean, you were certain your diving team wouldn't notice you suddenly going numb, or even caring enough to help you out. So it was essentially perfect, right?
Yeah, it was unfortunate yet perfect. It brought you despair to think of how perfect your plan was.
But since when was your life easy, [Y/N]? Since when did your plans went your way, you don't really remember having luck-
Even at your final moments, you aren't giving peace that you waited for.
When you dived deep without the proper preparation and your oxygen tank having barely enough to half an hour, you let your body get numb by the water pressure and the narcosis that happened as soon as you dived too deep for your fragile body to handle.
Funny how something that can bring life can also take it away, water surely is probably the most powerful element on Earth. Yet, even if it was sentient, you couldn't be able to beg for the ocean water to fully take you away from this pain, from this emptiness you feel.
The ocean it's as beautiful as it is merciless, so it shouldn't have been a surprise that it would take back your hopes away from you.
While you were unconscious and awaiting your own end, you couldn't possibly be aware of the creature picking your numb floating body.
You couldn't possibly have seen the rest of your diving group looking for you, or the predator carefully observing them, making sure they couldn't see you or him.
When you wake up, you'll feel not only confused after finding out your plan has gone wrong but also finding the immense creature laying on top of you like a pillow.
You didn't feel like fighting, or understanding what the hell was going on, you just noticed that the man on top of you clearly wasn't human and really, really heavy.
Yet you weren't completely awake, you weren't completely fine passing through that whole event, hell, you didn't even realize you weren't inside the ocean anymore, or that you are laying on a completely unfamiliar beach with a creature who is essentially a myth on top of you.
He was sleeping. Dreaming.
Growling. Someone was having a bad dream.
Or maybe a good dream? Throughout your expeditions, you have never really interacted with sharks, only looked at them from afar, so you don't know how to read their behavior.
In a moment of high due to your sudden awakening, you pet his head, getting through his white and grey hair despite the fact that he shouldn't have any hair in his body.
But again, you didn't care, you didn't care for anything, you just wanted to look at the sky and drift once again into your dreamland.
Yet this gentle yet heavy and firm hold he got you on was starting to bother you, but not because you were not enjoying it, no, it was totally the opposite.
You... Missed this. You missed this now that you remember the last time you received any form of comfort from another living being. Even if this terrifying thing could possibly eat you, you felt somehow comfortable being hugged and used as a comfort pillow to someone so big and muscular.
You felt odd, like you were worth something for once.
As if this big predator of the vast seas needed some sort of comfort, and for some reason it chose you to help with his little self-conscious problem.
It felt great knowing that even the someone that is so menacing feels scared or sad from time to time. It makes you feel… Strong, in a sense.
If he can feel vulnerable and openly show it, then I can too, right?
Sigh…. Maybe you were overthinking it, like everything else you ever did. Maybe you should just sleep and see what happens when you wake up-
If. You wake up.
And while you were thinking the worst of yourself and of your captor, the man himself was trying his best to hold the joy, the sorrow, and the pain he felt when seeing you losing your strength while diving.
It doesn't matter if he says anything, what can he say? Nothing he could possibly think about telling you, you'll be able to understand back. The language barrier was just like that. Massive, towering, unbreakable.
It would take a long time to understand one another, considering how you both spoke in different ways. Generally speaking, even your minds seem to be in different places.
You thought about things that he would never be able to comprehend, your self hatred is something he'll never agree with.
Your pain, your sorrow, it doesn't make sense to him, cause up until this day, he only saw the [Y/N] that had fun swimming with the fish and playing with them. Not the one that lives unhappy up on the surface.
How can someone that brings him so much joy can think so little of themselves, is something he'll never understand.
He doesn't know exactly what your true plans are, since in his head, you do these things by accident.
You've been trying this for a couple of times now, and he has either not understood the meaning of it or tried to hide the fact from his own worrying heart.
You did something that would have been pretty stupid especially considering that you were all alone, what if he wasn't there observing you? Would you just- Stop moving completely?
The thought of seeing the cute diver he grown attached to going away from this plan of existence is cruel if not straight up torture.
He just found the one who is bound to be with him for all his life, how else would he feel after discovering something so terrible? The only thing that anyone would feel in his place is fear, is rage, is agony-
Clearly something was going wrong up there, something that made you just-
Decide to float through the ocean forever.
But- But this is oddly the perfect solution to his own problems, now he has a reason and a way to get you to be with him forever now, right?
You seemed to have given up on the human world you live in, and he really wants to be with you so you two can easily be together now. It's an unfortunate event yet also the only opportunity that he has seen as useful to his cause.
Of course, he doesn't understand you, and you surely don't understand him yet, but that is fine because as soon as he wakes up, he'll make sure to do everything in his power to make you feel like the happiest mate of all.
He only hopes you didn't see him sleeping on top of you as a lazy thing for a husband to do, don't worry about him being a bad dad though, he'll make sure to show off everything he has in store for you.
Even if it takes a while to get you accustomed to his mannerism and your now little private island, he knows you're going to love it here with him as your company.

Sports Day - Merhayes
Another AO3 prompt where Cormac has a moment with Meredith's kids. who's surprised that they knew him that well.
Meredith wasn’t quite sure who came up with the idea for Grey-Sloan Family Sports Day, but she was going to kill Bailey for agreeing with it. It’s not that she didn’t love her kids and wanted to spend time with. Mer spent a lot of time playing tag with Ellis, in the back garden, kicking a ball around in a lame attempt of soccer with Bailey and helped Zola with some amateur gymnastics but sports day was something else.
Sports day meant egg and spoon races, three legged races and who knew what else. Meredith was not athletic, not by a long shot and would have happily just watched everyone else take part. Unfortunately, her kids had seen the flyer that Amelia had bought home with her and were determined that Meredith took part in every parent race that was being held. She’d tried for a while to convince them that Maggie or Amelia could also take part, but her kids all had her stubborn streak. So, Meredith now found herself signed up to more races that she had ever done in her life.
The day of the event had been cursed with sunshine. Meredith had been hoping for a downpour of rain so the whole thing could get called off, but her kids had run into her bedroom that morning, with Zola yanking the curtain open and lo and behold, sunlight had come streaming in.
When they had made it to the field, Meredith laid out the picnic blanket. Catching the kids before they all ran off, she made sure that they were slathered with sunscreen. The courses were still being set up and families still needed to arrive, so Mer took the opportunity to lay down and close her eyes, using the discarded jackets as a pillow. She was just about ready to drift off when a soccer ball came flying into her side.
“Ooft,” Mer shot upright to see her son with a cheeky grin on his face.
“Sorry, mommy.” Not that Bailey looked or sounded sorry in slightest
He quickly changed to his face to his puppy-dog eyes which reminded her exactly of Derek and all she could do was laugh.
“It’s fine, sweetie but mommy isn’t the goal post.”
“Are you gonna come and join us?” Ellis begged as she ran to join her brother.
“Please, mommy, it’ll be fun!” Zola added in.
One of them she might have been able to say no to, maybe even two but when then three of them got together, she stood no chance. The moment she had become a mother, Meredith had known that she wanted a part of her kids’ lives in a way that her mother never had been. Ellis Grey wouldn’t be seen dead at a family sports day but for Meredith, as much as she had been dreading the actual races, these were the kind of days that she loved most.
Surgery was amazing, the thrill and the rush of adrenaline that she got from it was always going to be one of her favourite feelings, but nothing would beat how she felt when she spent time with her kids. Even when they left the house a mess and drove her crazy, Mer knew that she would give up everything for them.
So, Meredith pushed herself up from her seat, picking up the soccer ball and ran with it. It took her kids a minute to realise what was going on before they ran after her.
“Mommy, that isn’t how you play soccer!” Bailey yelled behind her.
She looked back over at them and laughed, wishing that they would always be this carefree and happy. Eventually she stopped in her tracks and threw the ball to Ellis.
“Come on, Ellie Belle, it’s us against them.”
As she caught the ball, Ellis stuck her tongue out to her younger siblings and as quick as her little legs would take her. A quick look over her should made her see that Bailey was close to catching up with her and out of panic, Ellis quickly launched the ball away from her, to whoever was nearest. Who happened to be the Head of Paediatric Surgery.
“Ellis,” Meredith jogged over to her kids, all three of whom were grinning up at the Irish surgeon. “What did we say about throwing the ball at guests?”
“But Dr Mac isn’t a guest momma, we’re not home!”
Sometimes Meredith wished her kids weren’t that logical but at five-years-old, Ellis had an answer for everything.
“Still, baby, we’ve got to be careful and only throw to people who are in the game.”
“Dr Hayes doesn’t mind. Do you Dr Hayes?” Bailey turned to Cormac who grinned before kneeling with the soccer ball in hand.
“Absolutely not, Bailey but your mother is right, you have to be careful, okay?”
Ellis nodded eagerly at Cormac who gave her a wink.
“And how are you doing, Miss Zola? How did that science project go?”
Beaming, Zola pushed her chest out in pride. “I got the best in the class! Mrs Johnson said it’s the best she’s ever seen!”
“I’m impressed, you’re going to have to show me some time.”
“I could bring it to the hospital, if that okay with you, Mommy?” Zola turned to look at her mom.
Still in a little shock over how well Cormac seemed to know her kids, she managed to nod. “Yeah, sure thing, Zozo. You can bring it with you next time you come into work with me.”
“And how about you, Bailey? Did you manage to make the soccer team?”
Bailey sighed dramatically. “Yeah,” he drew out looking at the ground.
“You don’t seem too happy about that.”
“I am!” Bailey quickly shot back, not wanting Dr Hayes to think that he didn’t enjoy soccer anymore. “But because stuff’s closed, they said we have to wait until the new school year to play.”
“Ahh,” Cormac nodded in understanding, “I see, well that just gives you time to practice over Summer, right? And then you can get even better.”
Not having thought of it that way, Bailey was suddenly very excited about being on the soccer team again.
“Momma said I can start swimming lessons when they open again!” Ellis piped up, not wanting to be left out.
“Oh really,” Cormac smiled and arched an eyebrow. “Is that going to make you a mermaid princess then?”
“Yes!” Ellis started to jump up and down, nearly tripping over her own feet.
Meredith held out her hands to stead her little girl. “Alright you three, why don’t you get the ball back from Dr Hayes and go play, I’ll join you guys in a second.”
“Okay, it was really nice seeing you again, Dr Hayes!” Zola flashed him a bright smile as she took the ball.
“Are you here for sports day? Will you come and play with us later?”
Before Meredith was able to object and say that Cormac probably had better things to do, he replied. “I’m here with my boys and I’m sure they’d love to join us as well if you don’t mind.”
The prospect of having other boys to play was the best news Bailey could have had. “Yes, thank, Dr Hayes! Zola! Zola, guess what?” And with that Bailey was chasing after his sister to tell her his good news.
Ellis was the only one left and Meredith wondered why she hadn’t gone with her brother and sister yet but suddenly Ellis wrapped her arms around Cormac’s neck. “Bye, Dr Mac.” Giggling, she let go and went to join Ellis and Bailey.
Cormac straightened himself to full height, “What?” He saw the curious look on Meredith’s face.
“How do you and my kids know each other so well?”
Chuckling nervously, Cormac answered, “I-uh, spent a lot of time talking to them on video chat when they would ring to talk to you. I hope you don’t mind…”
He was worried that he had overstepped a mark. At the time, he just wanted to help cheer them up. He knew how his sons had been when their mom had been in hospital and at least she had been awake and responsive.
“Mind? No, but I hope you’re ready because they’re going to have a million and one questions whenever they see you.” She was teasing him, but it was also true. Her kids were just an inquisitive as she was.
“Somehow that doesn’t surprise me. You’ve got a great bunch there, Grey. Seem to take after their mother.”

Here you go! I went with SFW for this one.
The thing no one tells you about journeys of self-discovery is that they’re really fucking boring.
Duck’s been on this highway for days, and another highway for the days before that. He wanted to see the desert in the spring, but it’s involved fewer super-blooms and more butterflies dying on his windshield than he hoped.
Now he’s on some two lane strip of barely paved road in the vast expanse between Las Vegas and Reno. Green catches his eye to his left; a ribbon of well-watered trees shines in the distance. Closer to the road are dueling picket signs shoved into the ground, some demanding the preservation of the tiny pocket of wetlands and others proclaiming this the site of the Hungry Man Casino expansion. The signs continue all the way to the tiny town of Kepler, where he pulls into a gas station in front of Tarkesian’s General Store.
After filling the tank and chatting with the owner and his incongruous New York accent, Duck decides to stop in Kepler for the night. The road north is mostly open range, and he’s already had one near miss with a cow on a pitch black stretch of asphalt. The lone place to rest is the Reconciliation Motel Court and Casino. He gets his key, pulls up to the chipped door, and flops onto the burnt orange bedspread for a nap.
He doesn’t wake up until eight at night, wondering what the hell is wrong with the other guests that they’re all playing music loud enough for him to hear. He counts at least six separate voices, their overlap meaning the lyrics turn to gibberish. It’s still hot and stuffy in the room, and maybe outside will be quiet. He pulls on his swim trunks and rash guard; a peek out the window at the pool shows it’s empty and that, plus the general sparseness of the parking lot, makes him confident enough that he won’t bump into anyone and try to make up some lie about being shy or mormon or whatever the hell else would explain a dude keeping a top on to swim.
But, just his luck, when he latches the pool gate shut, he discovers he’s not alone. A man with silver hair floats in the pool, eyes closed. When Duck sets a towel on the chair, his eyes fly open and he dives under the water, giving Duck twin shocks: glowing red eyes and a long, jet black tail.
“What the fuck?” He says aloud in case someone else is watching and can explain why there’s a fucking mermaid in the pool.
The merman resurfaces, blinking at him, “How in the world did you get in here?”
“Uhhhh…” Duck points to the gate.
“You...you see the pool? Do you see the motel as well?”
Duck turns, wondering if this is some kind of prank, “yeah?”
“Apologies” the merman swims to the edge of the pool nearest him, “it was such an unlikely future I am having a hard time processing it.”
“You’re havin a hard time”
“Oh, oh of course, this is all very confusing to you. Here, have a seat.” He gestures to one of the pool chairs. Not knowing what else to do, Duck sits.
“Now, have you heard singing while you have been here?”
“Yep. Thought it was the other guests.”
The merman shakes his head, “They are sirens. As am I. We are the descendants of sirens who lived here in the days when there was far more water in this area. As the water dwindled, we made our home in that river and wetlands” he points towards the south end of town, “and then the founders of this fine establishment decided to catch us and use us to lure people to their rundown casino. Since you are about to ask, a siren song shows you what you want; turns out many people want the promise of easy money, food, or sex. But you...somehow you do not seem to respond to it.”
Duck shrugs, “Guess not.”
“I wonder...hmm, perhaps you do not want anything?”
“Don’t think that’s it. Been drivin up and down the country lookin for somethin I want but can’t name.”
The merman rests his arms on the concrete, “You must tell me everything about your travels.”
“I mean, uh, they ain’t all that excitin-”
“I have been stuck in this pool for three years.”
“Okay yeah, more excitin than that. Also, what the fuck?”
“There are ones like it in almost all the lower level rooms. I get stuck out here because I will not sing, but due to having future sight I am too valuable to do away with.”
“This ain’t gettin less fucked up.”
The merman laughs, “Perhaps that is why you don’t fall prey to our song; you are just very honest.”
“That a nice way of sayin I can’t lie for shit?”
“I suppose so.” He grins, sharp teeth glinting in the yellow streetlights, “regardless, I am glad you are not susceptible. I haven’t spoken to anyone aside from the owners in months. They even keep me from my own kind.” His tone is breezy, but Duck sees the flash of pain in his eyes.
“What’s your name?”
“Indrid. Yours?”
“Can’t you see it comin?” He teases.
“Yes, but I want to hear you say it. I get ahead of others often enough as it is.”
“Duck. It’s a nickname.”
Indrid flips his tail once, “Care to join me for an evening swim, Duck.”
“You ain’t gonna eat me or anythin, right?”
“I only taste humans when offered” His tail undulates hypnotically as he pushes into deeper water. Then he pauses, “that was meant as flirtation and not as a threat.”
Duck slides into the water, smiling when he meets Indrid’s nervous gaze “Yeah, I got that.”
--------------------------------------------------------------
“See, you can tell it’s a saguaro because--fuck” the camera slips from Duck’s hand, only for Indrid’s to shoot out and catch it before it hits the water.
“Thanks, ‘Drid, startin’ to wonder what I’d do without you.”
The mer, cheek resting on the warm concrete, shifts sideways so he can bump Duck’s knee with his forehead, “The feeling is mutual.”
For the last two weeks Duck’s stayed at the motel, watching his fellow occupants walk zombie-like through doors or stagger from them in a daze when their money runs out and the owners kick them to the curb to make way for new targets. Following Indrid’s instructions, he delivers messages between the trapped sirens, the kind they dare not sing aloud, brings them things they’re missing, like favorite foods or things to do, when he can manage it.
He’s also careful to spend time in town, away from any lingering influence of the siren songs. Leo Tarkesian gives him a job in the store, and he strikes up a friendship with a woman going by the name of Mama, who comes in once a week with beautiful wood carvings for Leo to set out for sale. It turns out her family used to own the motel before Reconciliation swooped in and stole it in what Mama insists was an illegal move.
“Worst part is, they crowed about creatin jobs, bringin’ in more tourists. But they won’t let no one outside their inner circle work there, and folks who stop never leave and visit the rest of town. Now they’re gunnin for the state park. But they ain’t gonna get away with it this time.”
More than anything, Duck spends his time with Indrid. The siren tells him stories about life in the wetlands and river, Duck tells him about his travels, about his home, talks with him until the stars come out, would stay until they go away again except the mer tells him he needs his sleep.
Indrid is a very encouraging conversation partner, disdain and aloofness only appearing when he has to speak to the owners of the motel. He’s also very affectionate, resting his head in Duck’s lap or winding his tail around him whenever he stands in the water. Which is why, when he asks Duck if he’s made up his mind about what to do come fall, his fingers are stroking the humans back and his tail is lazily petting his legs.
“I dunno. I could go back and finish my degree, become a ranger and all that. But what if I’m only doin that because I feel like it’s what I’m supposed to do?”
Indrid brushes Duck’s hair from his forehead, “When you think of the future where you meet that goal, how do you feel.”
“Happy. Content. Like, like there’s a thing I can do to keep the world healthy and whole. Sometimes I feel like I’m supposed to be out there savin the world, solvin every problem, makin everythin better. And that’s too damn much. But when I think about havin some forest or park or somethin where part of my job is to care for it, help it grow...yeah, think I could do that.” He smiles at the image of his future self those words conjure.
Indrid smiles at the current him, brushes their noses together, “It seems to me that you have your answer.”
Duck loops his arms around Indrid’s waist, “Then again, could just stay here, look after you and the other sirens forever.”
Chlorine stings his eyes as Indrid zips backwards, looking as if he’s been slapped.
“‘Drid? What’s wrong?”
“You cannot stay here any longer.”
“What do you mean? I wanna stay. I wanna be with you.”
“No! Don’t you see? This is how the song gets you. It is making you think that your greatest wish is to stay in this crumbling motel, looking after a siren who has seen better days.”
“Hold the fuck on” Duck tries to swim to him, only for Indrid to swim further out of reach, “‘Drid, it’s real fuckin insultin to tell a fella that the only reason he feels how he feels is because of a magic song. Maybe I am startin to feel the effects, but I know that when I think about you, no matter how near or far to this fuckin pool I am, I wanna be with you. I’ve fallen in love before, I can recognize the feelin from a mile away. And it’s what I’m feelin now.” He crosses his arms, daring Indrid to argue.
The siren swims to him, cups his face in cool hands, “It’s what I feel too. Why do you think I cannot ask you to stay? I am a prisoner here, Duck. If you remain for my sake, you will be one as well. I cannot do that to you. I know the agony of being cut off from the world you love, and you have so much love yet to give it I cannot, will not, rob you of the chance to do so.”
“I…” Duck he mirrors Indrid’s touch, runs his thumbs along his cheeks.
“Please” Indrid kisses him once, softly, “please, if you love me, don’t stay here and make me watch you decay.”
Duck pulls Indrid as close as he can, kisses him until his lips ache and the siren is pliant and purring in his arms.
“I’ll go. I fuckin hate the idea of leavin you here, but I’ll go.”
“Thank you.”
“There’s just one thing you gotta let me do first. Will you let me introduce you to another human? She’s got almost as much cause to hate Reconciliation as you do, and I got a hunch you two might be able to help each other out.”
Indrid cocks his head, then nods, “Of course, my love. Just tell her to wear earplugs and bring something to write on.”
-------------------------------------------------------
The cottonwoods rustle in the summer breeze as Indrid floats lazily down the river on his back. A family is picnicking outside the visitor center, but only the youngest member of it sees him. She waves. He raises his tail in reply, smiling when she spills her drink in delight.
Most sirens give the heavily trafficked parts of the park a wide berth, still wary of interactions with humans. Indrid doesn’t blame them; Reconciliation was chased out ten years ago, but their memory lingers like smog. He himself stays clear of unfamiliar groups of humans whenever possible.
But today, the futures show him the park is welcoming a new ranger. And so he swims back and forth, hoping the recent arrival will see him. Hoping he remembers.
“I’m sorry sir, but swimmin ain’t allowed in this chunk of the river.” A teasing drawl drifts over his shoulder.
He spins in what he hopes is an elegant way, accidentally splashing the figure on the bank behind him.
“Of course.” He grins, swimming over and resting his arms on the bank and batting his eyelashes as the ranger crouches down to meet him, “how very rude of me. I am terribly sorry.”
Duck’s smile is brimming with years of stored up affection, the lines on his face hinting at stories Indrid cannot wait to hear, “S’okay. For my favorite roadside siren, I’m happy to make an exception.”

⋅ Yuta always longed to see you smile. His wish was to marry you one day and walk as a human next to you for the rest of your lives. Little did he know you were a princess, destined to marry someone else. Slowly, as seasons change, so does he. Until your tears are what he longs to see.
⠀ ⠀
⠀ based on
⋅ chanson gothique by Gérard de Nerval (Eng translation down here)
⋅ Beautiful bride, I love your tears. They are the dew, which suits the flowers. Beautiful things have only one spring, let us sow roses, the steps of time. Whether she be brown or blonde, must one choose? The God of the world is Pleasure.
“I’m going to go again”
Yuta spoke out loud, his body lowering itself further into the water as the hopeful feeling disappeared. The boy lingered there for a handful of extra seconds, and he would have lingered for longer if it wasn’t for the wave of water hitting him in the face and straight into reality. You weren’t going to show up.
His body completely soaked itself in the water again, his colored tail helping him move towards the place he called home. His mind always tried to stop him from going home. His family always tried to stop him from coming here: knowing his family, he would get the daily lecture about the bond between mermaids and humans. How he was worth more than just a human.
As he swam back to where he came from, you just came running to your favorite place. The sand under your feet making it hard to be fast. Before you knew it, you had stumbled thanks to the combination of clumsiness and the sand. A small laugh left your lips as you got back to your feet, embarrassed but it would be a good story to tell Yuta.
Yuta smiled as soon as he heard the familiar giggle around him, your laugh sounded so different when he was underwater but it still sounded beautiful to him. It was the kind of sound he could identify straight away. His body made a quick turn towards the sound, swimming in that same direction. Suddenly he didn’t care anymore that you had been late, you were here now and it was all that mattered.
“Yuta!” You called out his name with a beaming smile as soon as the red hair came into your view, an inaudible sigh of relief left past your lips. You had hoped that he was still there, despite you being late, luckily you were right on time to call him back before he had left. You sat in your usual spot as you waited for him to get to the rock. As you watched him swim, you weren’t aware of the smile that was on your lips. It simply was like something magical unraveling right in front of you, and the sight was magnificent. Not because he was a merman, just because he was Yuta.
He placed his hands on the rock that you were sitting on, pushing himself up with his strength so that your conversations were able to happen alongside with looking at each other. “I nearly thought you wouldn’t come to see me today,” he said, smiling as he spoke but his words had the hidden signal that he needed to hear the opposite of his own thoughts.
You shook your head, looking at the red-haired man in front of you. “I would never ditch these moments, you know I always tell you beforehand when I can’t come,” you said. Your words were honest, both of you knew that. There rarely was a day that you didn’t pass by, when you didn’t have time, you would make sure to tell him beforehand. Little did you know, that even when you weren’t there, Yuta would always be.
“I know” Yuta answered, finally realizing how possessive the words made him sound. He couldn’t help but be a bit possessive or attached to you. Aside from being the human that he saw every day, you were so much more, so much more than you realized. His feelings went further than those of best friends did, but he had never been able to tell you. The only people who knew were his brothers and a handful of friends, those friends who wouldn’t use their mouths to let the gossip escape.
The man snapped out of his thoughts when he felt your hand going through his wet hair, his eyes closing as soon as he felt how you were carefully trying to untangle the knots with your fingers. “Have you tried the man bun I suggested?” You asked, and as you expected already, Yuta shook his head. Of course, he hadn’t tried it, it was something weird to imagine, let alone actually try it and swim around with it while others could see it. “Then it’s a good time to try it now!” You concluded.
Yuta simply never could say no to you, he was deeply in love with you, his love was as deep as the oceans he swam in. So he always said yes, yes to be able to see you smile. “Hold the hair tie” you instructed and quickly flung the little band towards him before getting to work.
You weren’t a skilled person with this profession but you knew and had seen enough to try it. Usually, it was you who was sitting on a stool in front of the vanity while others did your hair, now that tables had turned, you liked to think you had enough experience with just watching it when others did it. Though, it was hard to even do something without the professional tools.
“Do you still have that fork that you found last week?” You asked and motioned to the small bag that hung from his waist. Immediately Yuta let his hand delve into the bag, creating different sounds when the objects collided. “I got it,” he said as he pulled the silver fork from the bag, dropping it down in your opened hand.
Unlike Yuta expected, you placed the fork in the middle of his head, careful that the tines didn’t press too hard against his scalp. It was even more shocking when you started to move it in brushing motions, the tines and the gaps between them replacing a comb’s job.
It was quiet between the two of you, only a couple of small winces leaving his lips whenever the fork was combing through knots. At the same time, he felt as if it was a calming experience, especially because it was you who was doing it.
“Now we make a braid, then a bun” You explained more to yourself than to Yuta, as much as you and Yuta enjoyed playing around sometimes, the moment felt gentle. “Can I have the hair tie?” you asked, this time directing your words to Yuta. He raised up his arm until it was far enough for you to reach, and he had to smile when your fingertips grazed the palm of his hand while taking the hair tie.
Yuta’s eyes were closed as he felt your fingers through his hair, he could feel the way you were braiding it. He imagined the focused expression your face would display, making you look cuter than you probably would think yourself. His happy thoughts made some small humming sound leave his lips, within seconds it turned into humming a song.
It took a couple of minutes before the braid was finished, simply because you weren’t used to being the one who did it, but you were happy to try it out on your friend. Your fingers applied the hair tie around the bun, listening to the relaxing humming sound. Yuta’s voice had always been beautiful, especially when he was singing or whenever he spoke Japanese.
“Done” you said proudly as your fingers left his hair, instead your eyes started to examine how well you did. You concluded, even without Yuta’s opinion, that you had done a great job. As Yuta put the fork back into his bag, he fished out a little mirror next. A mirror he had gotten from you, without reason but he appreciated it.
His eyes went to the mirror, noticing it was indeed himself that he was seeing. His fingers went to his hair, but he followed every move with his eyes in the mirror. First feeling over the bangs that covered his forehead, and from that point over his head until he felt the bun and the braid underneath it. “I love it,” he said, not even realizing he couldn’t see the back, he always said yes to you and aside from that, it felt as if his confidence got a little boost.
Yuta turned towards you again and smiled, his smile making you do exactly the same thing. Many people smiled at you, everyone smiled at the princess. But their smiles weren’t genuine, they just smiled because it was respectful, just as respectful as the bows that would be exchanged. Compared to Yuta’s smile, it was a lot different. Yuta’s smile healed you from the inside, it was a genuine smile that was shared between people who had a good connection.
“I have to go soon, it’s already getting dark.” You said suddenly, trying not to show that you were late for something he didn’t know. Your eyes no longer fell to his face even if he was looking at you. You knew the fake pout he gave you, though today it would actually make you feel guilt. His hand reached to yours, gently holding it seeing he didn’t want to get your clothes wet with a hug “I will see you tomorrow, sweet dreams” he said, bringing your hand up to his lips and pressed his delicate kisses on every fingertip.
His lips lingered on the last fingertip, only pulling away when he noticed it probably was really time for you to head back home. Yet, you didn’t leave without your usual kiss on his cheek, mumbling a small ‘goodnight’ against the soft skin.
After that Yuta watched how you ran off again, into a direction that he’d never know where it would lead to. He didn’t realize how he didn’t know as much about you as you did about him. To him, you were just y/n, but he didn’t know that to the rest of the country, you were princess y/n.
He swam back to his underwater paradise, but the only paradise he was in, was in his imagination where one day, he would get to marry you.
Your mind was still on Yuta as you entered the castle, glad that no one caught you sneaking in but like probably every princess on earth, you were desperate for an escape and smart enough to make it unseen by others. The castle was too big for every part to be watched at the same time.
You took the stairs and went up to your bedroom, trying to be fast but at the same not waste any energy so that your parents wouldn’t see you out of breath in a bit. Once you were in your room, you closed the door behind you to give yourself privacy.
“Get yourself ready y/n” You spoke to yourself as you took a seat at the vanity, looking up to meet your own eyes through the reflection of the mirror. Instead of seeing yourself without makeup, you saw yourself longing to be with the red-haired merman. Yuta was always drifting around in your mind, distracting you from the life you were supposed to lead.
It took a few stimulating words to yourself before you started to work on yourself. Applying some makeup, getting dressed in a nice dress that was made for you, doing your hair which only reminded you even more of Yuta.
As much as Yuta was overwhelming your thoughts, you knew you shouldn’t call that name in the next hour. The prince that you would be accompanied with, wouldn’t appreciate such things, especially not as he could possibly be the one you were bound to marry.
Your parents never had listened when you said you weren’t interested in marrying princes from other royal families, they wanted the best for you and the kingdom. Your heart would never belong to any of those men, the man that had your heart was a child of the ocean, Nakamoto Yuta.
Once you were ready and prepared, you left your bedroom and headed downstairs where you would meet the other prince for the first time. As your schedules conflicted so much, the meeting had to be set after 9 pm, the time when both of you had time for your own things and from now on apparently each other.
“y/n! Finally, you’re here! You took so long to get ready” Your mother said as she saw you walking in the hallway. You had no idea why she was there and not in the company of your father or the parents of the prince. “I know, I was writing a letter to Sicheng. Sorry for being late” you answered with a fake smile. Your letter to your best friend Sicheng had already been sent a day ago, though that was your parents had no business or interest in.
You walked past your mother after saying that, trying to put up a fake smile as you walked into the room to meet your possible husband. If only, he was your Yuta and not some high-end prince.
The first fall morning seemed to come earlier than expected, the summery sun was less bright but it still brought you enough happiness for the rest of the day. As annoyed as you were that the sun shone through the curtains, getting up to go and see Yuta made it all worth it.
You got dressed quickly, putting on a coat over your dress so that you wouldn’t get cold. Early in the morning, it usually was cold but sadly you were occupied the rest of the day. And seeing Yuta was a priority, even if it was early in the morning when others were still laying in their warm and comfortable beds.
It was silent in the castle, it nearly made you think you were caught before you even left. Though either way, everyone was working so quietly, or no one had gotten up yet. You silently escaped, just like you did every day.
You walked towards the place where you and Yuta saw each other daily, the halfway point between your world and his. Your legs sometimes had to drag the rest of you along, which made you wonder what it would feel like to be like Yuta. He probably wondered the same but from a different perspective, you already heard him wish out loud how he wanted legs. Legs to walk around the earth with you, as if the legs would make you love him the same way as he loved you.
Then you remembered, it was better if Yuta didn’t have legs like humans did. Another friend of him, Taeyong, had been given the ability to walk for 24 hours, but it cost him his voice. That kind of scenario was something you didn’t want happening to Yuta, even if he would do it in a heartbeat if it meant being able to finally get close to you properly.
The walk took longer than it normally would, but you blamed it on the early morning for now, or maybe it was the heavy heart you were carrying around today. The silence didn’t make it better, and the closer the sound of the waves came, the more a heart-wrenching feeling started to consume you. You told yourself it wasn’t your fault, even though you weren’t sure if you were sorry because you couldn’t spend time with Yuta or because behind his back, you were meeting yet another man who was added to the line-up of possibly getting married to you.
“Y/n”
You looked up at the voice of Yuta sounding just loud enough to overpower the waves. Your eyes went to the water in front of you, searching for the bright red hair, the signature mark of the man you loved. Instead of being in the water, where he truly belonged, he was sat on the rock that you would normally take your place on.
The pace of your steps increased a bit as soon as you saw him like that, it was a rare sight even though you had seen him like that before. Though it usually was something he only did whenever it would rain, so that he didn’t run out of his need for water that fast. But today, he was willing to try and survive like this, to show you that he wanted to adjust his life for you.
“It’s cold Yuta, get back in the water” you said and slightly pushed his bare shoulder as a sign that he should get back to the blue transparent water, which probably was cold to you but it was like a warm home to him. His skin had tiny goosebumps forming an extra layer as a sign that the air was too cold for him. But Yuta wouldn’t be Yuta if he wasn’t a tiny bit stubborn. He just hummed before he shook his head, as a final answer and also the first time he ever told you no, simply because he wanted to prove a point to you this time.
You let out a soft sigh at his reaction and took off your coat, luckily your arms were still covered with the sleeves of the dress. You wrapped your jacket around his shoulders so that he at least could keep himself the slightest bit warm. As silly as it probably was looking, Yuta felt warm, not on the outside, but on the inside, his heart was swelling with overflowing love for you.
The two of you sat next to each other like that for a couple of minutes, only moving when Yuta rested his head on your shoulder and you rested your head on top of his. He was the one who broke the silence first, first with a breath, then with his voice. “Where are you going today?” He asked you.
You glanced at him as you were taken back by the question you feared the most at this moment, at the same time you were grateful that his eyes weren’t focused on you. The silence was short as you came up with an answer.
“My parents wanted to get me one of those dresses that exactly fit. So we have to go and measure me, after that we will go for dinner” you said quickly, not telling the complete truth but there was no lie in it either. The measurements were something that didn’t take hours, but the meeting with yet another man probably would.
Your words didn’t sound like the perfect lie, simply because you had wanted to be honest, but your heart and mind for once worked together to stop Yuta from possibly getting hurt. Yuta slowly turned his head, his eyes on you for a couple of moments and he managed to even smile at you. He fell for your poor excuse. “That sounds boring” he said, pretending to yawn.
The fake yawn made a smile appear on your lips, the natural cuteness he had, the healing smile he gave you. It had an unexplainable effect on you, it made you forget that you were breaking your own and his heart, even if you weren’t sure if his heart belonged to you.
“It actually is boring” You said but were quick to realize your mistake, how could you know if it was boring if you had to act like you had never done those things before. “At least that’s what I’m assuming” you added. It was boring, very boring and a waste of time. The time you’d waste there, was a time you would have liked to spend with Yuta.
Yuta hummed in response, trying to imagine what it would be like to wear clothes, real clothes and not like the coat that was hanging over his shoulders. Clothes that you were wearing, but in a male form of them instead. He never questioned it before, and now that he thought about it, he noticed you almost always would wear something beautiful, expensive-looking materials in unique colors.
He turned his head away again to rest it properly onto your shoulder like he did before. His eyes closed as he felt peaceful. The moment felt even more special when he could feel your hand running through the strands of half-wet hair on his head.
It was your eyes who first caught sight of the slight change in his hair, the usual bright red seemed just a tad darker, and you didn’t need a color scheme to prove it. Red was red, but there were millions of reds, and neither of them actually were alike if you really paid attention. Though you noticed, you didn’t question it, and thought it was because the seasons had changed.
“I miss you and our usual time already” Yuta suddenly said, by the tone in his voice, it was clear how genuine he was. After all, Yuta would be back tonight, just being there while you weren’t. At the end of his day, you remained in his heart.
The confession made you hum in agreement, you understood the way he felt because you already missed him too. The two of you were attached to one another, and the daily rendezvous was something that grew on the two of you like it was the most uplifting moment of the day. “I know,” you said quietly.
Suddenly Yuta started to hum, something that sounded like a song, one that you had never heard before. Not that you heard many songs, as a radio was something the castle lacked, and your parents didn’t miss. The music that you heard, probably sounded like a golden trash can compared to the music that was played nowadays. Though that didn’t mean that you didn’t enjoy the man next to you humming.
You were aware that Yuta probably didn’t own a radio either, but you weren’t aware of the fact that Yuta liked to make up his own songs. It was weird how you weren’t aware of it, even after hearing him sing and hum so many times. The pieces in your mind simply didn’t puzzle together yet.
As he hummed the unfamiliar song, time passed by, the time you had lost the sight of. Time went slow or even stopped when you were with Yuta, yet it was as if the time you spent together passed by faster than any other part of your day. You don’t know what amount of minutes passed by, time was non-existent.
“Don’t you have to go soon?” Yuta asked a while after his humming ended, he mostly was asking because he was feeling dehydrated and probably would have to get back into the water before anything dangerous happened. He didn’t want to go but was nearly forced to by his own body.
You looked up at the sky as if the sky would give you an answer, but the less cold air was what made you realize a lot of time had probably passed by already. “I do” you said hastily and stood up, causing Yuta’s head to drop slightly as it had been resting upon your shoulder the entire time.
When you realized what you did, you leaned down and rapidly pressed your lips to the first piece of skin they found. The space between his cheek and lips, something you didn’t realize the moment it happened. The connection of your bodies ended a second after it started. You stood up straight again and without further spoken words, ran off to start the worst part of your day.
Yuta missed you the moment you left, the warmth that had spread around his body when you were there was gone, even with your coat hanging from his shoulders.
As Yuta sat there in silence for a few spare minutes, he took the sleeves of the coat and felt the fabric between his fingers. It felt so gentle, just like he remembered the way your lips felt against the last bit of cheek skin he had before his lips started. He took another look at the coat, it would be a shame if he took it in the water with him. The water would remove the scent of you, thus he decided to leave your coat on the rock, and each passing hour he came back to check if the coat was still there. Though, maybe it was more like a way for him to check if you really weren’t going to show up again today.
“Traditional white would be good, don’t you think? Princess y/n?”
You were snapped back into reality when you heard your name being called out by a voice you had been hearing a bit too much in the past couple of months. You gave a fake smile towards the designer who would take care of your wedding dress but forgot to answer for a bit. It wasn’t as if they genuinely cared anyway, as she even thought your fake smile meant yes.
Now that you were back to reality, you didn’t even remember what your zoned-out moment consisted of. Maybe it was the long talk you had with Sicheng yesterday, or maybe it was how now that winter started, you hadn’t seen Yuta once. Or it could be about yourself, how you had been letting everything build up, you regretted that this story was going to have its climax at once, if you had been honest then nothing would have gone this way.
While the designer was quickly putting together the sketches she had prepared, you got up and slowly walked over to the window. Yuta’s home seemed so far away and yet close, just like how the line of water seemed short but endless at the same time. You imagined the sound of the waves as you looked at the water, and a sad smile appeared on your lips once your imagination gave you a snippet of Yuta’s healing smile right in front of your eyes.
Another zoned out moment ended when you felt a hand being placed upon your shoulder. Your gaze went towards other parts of the outside world, but your mind stayed at the same place. “y/n. Prince Mark wants to know if you would be interested in taking a walk today, as he hasn’t been anywhere other than the castle” one of the maids, or as you called them assistants said to you. You turned back to her, obviously hesitating about your answer.
“I actually promised to meet up with someone else” You said soft, preferring your Yuta over Prince Mark who you barely knew, even if he seemed like a really nice person so far. You’d expected the maid to inform your parents about your plans, but instead, she smiled and nodded her head. “Go and see him, I will tell the king and queen you are sick in bed tonight” she said before she walked off to tell Mark the unfortunate news.
Your eyes fell to the designer who didn’t catch any of the things you had been saying to the maid, the designer seemed to busy trying to put together everything she had made into a neat whole. It wasn’t as if it mattered what you thought, there was a big chance your parents would make that decision for you.
All of the things that had been settled so far were decided by your parents: how your wedding would be in the summer, the location, what would happen after the wedding. Instead of you writing chapters for the life you were supposed to start up alone, it was your parents who wrote out the words for you and you just had to publish them.
“Princess y/n, the designs are ready to be seen”
A muttered ‘okay’ left your lips as you headed back to your seat, your figure slumping in the seat. You didn’t feel the energy or need to go through with this idea, you wished you could protest against it, but it would make things worse.
As the designer started to show you every sketch and explained about the dresses that she had drawn, you only paid half of your attention to her, the other half probably was lost somewhere once again. Then again, the drawings itself were more interesting than what she was telling about them. You hoped for Prince Mark that he had a designer who didn’t feel the need to put an explanation behind everything.
“Can I just see the sketches myself, please” You requested and held out your hand to receive the sketches, aside from of the verbal waterfall, you simply wanted to decide a dress based on your likings, not on the history of wedding dresses.
The designer rapidly nodded and handed over the sketches to you, you were already happy her voice wasn’t used for a couple of seconds. You wanted silence, even if silence brought your thoughts to things that you shouldn’t think about.
As your eyes judged the wedding dresses, you couldn’t imagine wearing one of them, for the simple reason that you couldn’t imagine yourself getting married. At least not to Mark, the two of you had barely been engaged for two short days, and in those days he didn’t get down on his knee in front of you. It had been decided by your parents and his parents.
You looked at one of the dresses, remembering that was what they called a mermaid wedding dress just because the word immediately reminded you of Yuta. Without having a truthful opinion on any of the dresses, you just pointed your finger at the mermaid dress and got up. The designer knew your choice now. You had completed your task of choosing a wedding dress, now you could leave again and do your own thing.
The hallway was quiet, you could only hear another pair of footsteps wandering around, though it didn’t get to your mind how they sounded different than those of your mother or the ones from the people who worked in the castle. “Princess! I did not think I’d see you here” you heard, which made you look up to where the still unfamiliar voice came from.
Then you saw Prince Mark who was halfway down the stairs, probably wondering through the castle because he wanted to get to know the place or he was looking for something. “I’ve been told you were sick, but my knocks on the bedroom door were unanswered,” he said, the formal tone was something you still had to get used to, you bet the man didn’t even speak like that in real life. He probably was young enough to know slang.
“I am sick, but my parents expected me to choose a dress today. Princess duties before y/n duties. I guess that’s why they say ‘in sickness and health’ when you get married” you said, giving the prince a slight smile as he came down the last steps of the staircase. He gave you a smile back, it seemed as if his smile told you how he was sorry for you that your parents were like that. “Then you should head to your room, princess. Rest well and recover soon” he spoke, he moved in to kiss your cheek, but before that could happen, you were already up to the stairs and on the way to your room.
As soon as you could, you shut the bedroom door behind you, you just didn’t want anyone passing by your room today. As good as the excuse of being sick was, it also meant heaps of people would try to get to you so that they could wish you a fast recovery or offer you some things that could act as an offer so that the sickness would pass. As long as your parents didn’t stand by your door, everything was going to be fine.
You got a small bag and stuffed it full with the objects you had collected from fall until now, objects that Yuta probably had an interest in since they weren’t exactly up to date underwater. Maybe it was a kind of sorry gift, to apologize for not letting him know you would be gone for a couple of days, for not showing up on the days he expected you to come.
After you got the objects in the bag, you got yourself dressed in warmer clothing, something suitable for the cold winter weather outside your castle. You took your time to get yourself ready because you were dreading the things that you and Yuta would say to each other. Perhaps the judging and disappointed look that Yuta would have in his eyes. You would rather lie in bed and cry than seeing those things, but at the same time you badly wanted to see Yuta, and him being disappointed was nothing but fair so you’d have to put up with it.
Half an hour later, you had arrived at the place you had missed in the past couple of days. The wind was raw as if it hit you in the face for you to finally tell Yuta the truth. Lately, Yuta and telling the truth had been a dangerous thought in your mind. Yet, you weren’t courageous enough to do so, no matter how much he deserved honesty.
You heard a soft voice singing, it was nearly as if the voice was far away, fading into the sound of the wind. The lyrics were things you didn’t pay attention to, the voice seemed to draw you in like you sometimes got pulled into dreams. Your boots left slight footprints in the frozen sand, the trail going into the same direction as the voice.
“Yuta”
The owner of the godly voice looked up when he heard his name being called, by the person he loved so much. y/n, the girl he would give his life for, the girl with the most beautiful smile ever.
A last Japanese lyric left his lips as the song had ended with that, a heart-wrenching sigh pushing itself past his lips. Through that, his eyes never lost sight of you.
It was as if you hadn’t seen Yuta in a long time even if in reality it had only been a couple of days. Maybe it was the change in Yuta that made it seem as if you two were distant friends who saw each other only once or twice a year.
The man ran a hand through his hair, and that was when you were able to put a label on the biggest change. What started with bright red, through fall became a darker shade of red, now became what was dark red and black roots had appeared as if the red color was growing out.
He didn’t speak one word, it was as if he was frozen due to the bad weather conditions or due to the shock of you re-entering his life after days. So, you set the first step towards him. The bag clutched in your hand as you put it down as close to him as it would go with the distance between the two of you. “It’s for you” you said, trying to show him a smile, in hopes you’d get one back.
Yuta didn’t return your smile at that time, making your lips curve slightly downward without realizing it. “Thanks,” he said, it was the only moment his lips seemed to move into an upward curve, but it didn’t happen, it stopped before you even had the chance to get your hopes up for the second time.
“It’s to apologize for not being here the past few days” You added again, hoping to get more than just one word out of him this time, if you were allowed to expect more then you expected for him to forgive and forget it. It was all you wanted at this moment. “So I’m sorry”
You looked up at Yuta, your eyes meeting his to show that your eyes didn’t lie about how sorry you were. His eyes were harsh at first sight, but the healing spark made its appearance when you least expected it to.
“Don’t be sorry” He said and smiled his usual healing smile, if his healing smile could heal your broken promises then you’d be forever grateful but knew that only you had the solution to the problems you created.
Through the time you’d been spending with Yuta, the worries and troubles were forgotten for a little while. It was the two of you talking about small nothings, checking out the objects you had gotten him, hearing him tell some underwater adventures, simple but distant hand-holding as Yuta didn’t want you to get wet and sick because of it.
No matter how good it felt to be back around Yuta, you felt how things about him seemed to change. His way of talking stayed the same, but humming turned into singing more, and the way his hair sometimes seemed to get darker was something that concerned you. Did he have any merman abilities that you didn’t know of?
The colorful flowers bloomed in the garden you walked through with your fiance, both of you looking at either side of the path to see what kind of flowers were suitable for at the wedding. There was a decent amount of distance between the two of you as you walked, unlike the flowers, things between you and Prince Mark weren’t blooming yet.
From time to time Mark questioned if you liked a certain flower when you bent down to take one from the many possibilities, but in reality, you were collecting them in a small bouquet to give them to Yuta. Real flowers didn’t grow underwater, and it was something that possibly could fascinate him. You at least remembered the day he tried to put a yellow flower in his hair, back when his hair was still as bright as the red color of velvet.
“Did you ever love someone before, y/n?”
The question was a surprising one but at the same time, it was one you expected much sooner than this day. With Mark, you decided to be honest, even if he didn’t know about Yuta’s existence. “Of course I did, I just never learned if he loved me too,” you said, you were sure you sounded broken when you said it. You did love Yuta starting a long time ago, and you still loved him right at this moment, your love wasn’t something that parents would usually call a phase in the life of a young person.
“Me too. Although, my parents weren’t fond of her social position in the country. So before I properly got a chance to love her, it was already time for me to move on” he admitted sadly, you could hear by the tone that it was something that still hurt him on the inside. Love was something painful, at the same time it was one of the most wonderful things in the world. Love was something no one would understand.
The honesty in the conversation did you well, indirectly being able to confess everything that had been going on was like a part of weight falling from the heavy heart you carried along. Also, the small similarities made it easier for both of you to understand each other. It was one of the reasons you got along with Mark, because of the friendly bond that you two had built up.
You held onto the self-created bouquet of flowers as the walk continued, even though both of you were looking at the flowers, neither of you said something about them fitting your wedding. Both of you seemed to be in your own thoughts, sometimes sharing them through things that seemed to work like telepathy.
Looking for flowers at your wedding took another couple of hours, it took long because neither of you cared or wanted to care. When you got back from the long day, you were still on time to see Yuta. Seeing him again was something you looked forward to. Sometimes you caught yourself not going, even when your schedule was empty all day long, not because you had Mark now, but because Yuta deserved something better than what you did. You would be lying to yourself if you said that you had seen Yuta recently, because you didn’t. The last time was two weeks ago.
You were clothed in a spring dress when you went to your usual meeting spot, you had taken off your shoes to feel the cold sand beneath your feet, a feeling you enjoyed after not being able to do so through the cold weathered seasons. Unlike when it was winter, it was still light at this time of the day, more people were outside, the mood would be a lot better.
In your hand was the little bouquet of flowers you had put together for the man you loved, even though an engagement ring from another guy was shining around one of your fingers.
“Yuta? Are you there?” you asked as you dropped the flowers and your shoes onto the sand. Ready to give him a hug as soon as you saw him. Your eyes examined the scene around you, your goal to find Yuta amongst the people around you. Even if you knew it was impossible because Yuta didn’t have legs to walk on the earth with. You looked at everyone, but no one looked back at you. Three people were in the same place as you were: two older-looking women that were talking and a young man with longer black hair who sat on the rock you usually would occupy.
No Yuta.
The rough waves cried for you, even though they didn’t wash your sadness away. It was as if the waves cried so you didn’t have to. The man that you loved had given up on you, you lost him because of your mistakes. You weren’t disappointed in him, just in yourself. You left the beach as quick as you had arrived, your hope left in the water as sadness took its place in your heart.
The rest of the evening was spent in your bed, your excuse of feeling sick no longer seemed like an excuse. You weren’t feeling ill, you were left with a heart that could never heal again, a heart that no one could mend. Yuta became an obsessive thought in the past hours, everywhere you could see, feel and hear him. But never, was he actually there.
The unexpected vocals of him made you open your eyes, the Japanese song that you’d heard before, only this time it had English lyrics, yet the lyrics were so poetical that you had no idea of the meaning behind them. The voice seemed so real and it was almost as if it was trying to appeal something to you.
You had to go and see for yourself.
Your nightdress still covered up your body, nothing aside from going to see Yuta was in your mind. The window you usually would escape from was ignored, you just walked past it like it never had been the right way to go. Tonight you weren’t escaping, you were leaving. And left all of the doors wide open behind you.
Yuta’s sweet voice seemed even louder when you were outside, now it was clear that he was actually there and it wasn’t just your mind playing tricks on you. Your feet dragged the rest of your body along with them, your mind was seemingly put to rest. You didn’t know if your heart was taking the lead, or you were controlled by something else.
On the beach, it was only you and who appeared to be the same young man who sat there in the early evening as well. He was facing the water, his body so still that it was as if he was a real-life sculpture. Your bare feet stepped closer to him, and with each step you took, the voice seemed a bit closer.
His head turned when you had taken the last step towards him. Your eyes raised to his face, revealing how the young man wasn’t just a random stranger, it was the man who you deeply loved.
“Yuta”
Your whisper was almost inaudible, yet it interrupted him as you could see it by his eyes. The voice that he controlled grew more powerful, it was like it even got the force to push you and make you land on your knees right next to the rock.
Yuta was no longer who you expected him to be, the merman you loved was gone. The once bright red hair was now completely black, the colorful tail had changed into one of red and black. His fins that had been beautifully defined before, seemed damaged and uncared for. The sight of him was something you were forced to look upon, controlled to only look at him even if it hurt you on the inside. You turned him into this creature.
“Beautiful bride” He started once he was done singing, in this conversation, it was he who talked, it was he who had control over you. All you could do was listen as if your lips were sealed together, unable to part them. He let out a soft sigh, his eyes never leaving you and your eyes never leaving him.
Yuta twirled his black hair around one of his fingers as a small silence played. Reality hit you at that moment: he found out that you were engaged and a part of the royal family. “You took all of the steps of time, but you see what happens when you don’t have steps left” He spoke, the corner of his lips twitched up for a small moment to resemble a smirk. “You fall” he added.
“Get up” He ordered and motioned his finger for you to come to him, closer to him. At last, your body was able to move although it seemed to be under control of Yuta just like every sense of yours. Your steps went towards him, standing in the water to get to the rock and be close to him like he made you be. It was the same way you’d stand when the two of you met up in the early days when you’d meet: him in the water as you sat on the rock
His hand reached out to your face, his hand collided with the skin of your right cheek in a gentle way. The skin to skin contact giving him more control than he already had. His fingertips stroked over your soft skin for a handful of seconds, it was so delicate and made you believe he was still a good person. His long fingers unexpectedly gripped your chin between them, raising your head so that you were forced to look into his eyes.
The beautiful brown eyes he used to have were gone and it took two looks before you realized heterochromia made both of his eyes different. Both eyes intense, neither of them gave off the gentleness the brown eyes used to give you. The bright red eye reminded you of the hair he used to have, the black eye was like a black hole you could drown into any moment.
His body moved from the big rock, back into the water. Unlike you, he didn’t feel the water that came along with the chilly spring night. The closer he got to you, the less safe you felt and yet this time you were the one who wouldn’t be able to say no to him.
“Can I kiss you? One last time” He asked, his words much more gentle than the way his eyes looked at you or his fingers held your chin in place. Your body only allowed you to nod, you didn’t know if you would have given the same answer if you actually had more than one option.
Yuta’s lips touched yours a second after he asked. Just like the water would touch the sand for the first time in the morning, it was gentle and calm, almost healing you like his abilities did many times before. The first kiss with the love of your life, words you still went by, because he was the love of your life. Even in this situation.
The moment was heart-wrenching and healing synchronously, the raw emotion was irreplaceable. One lonely tear escaped through the corner of your eye, something that didn’t go unnoticed by Yuta.
The kiss broke off the moment Yuta laid eyes on the small tear trickling down your cheek. His lips formed into a smile, different than the healing ones he had usually given you. It was adoration, going hand in hand with an unsafe feeling. But you couldn’t do anything.
“I love your tears” He said in a muted tone, almost whisper-like. His thumb hovered over your cheek just in time to stop the tear from rolling down further. The words conflicted with the compliments about your smile that he would always give you. “They could be the dew on the flowers you gifted me.”
The sounds of the water confirmed that he was moving around, and your eyes no longer saw him. Your eyes were opened but all you could see was the dark water, and looking at something else was not an option. Your hearing sense picked up Yuta’s soft singing voice again, the earlier English lyrics had once again transferred to Japanese again.
A hand wrapped around your ankle, the grip was immensely tight. Your other leg trying to move the hand away from your ankle, but it was no use. You had to escape even if you had no chance to, you escaped many times before, from many things. Suddenly a harsh tug on your ankle pulled you along under the water.
The last thing you saw were the eyes of the man you loved,
The last thing you heard was the voice of the love of your life,
“beautiful things only have one spring”

His Name was...
Okay, I got a ask a about a minuete ago from someone who wanted to know what else do i write. I love writing. I’ve been writing since I was twelve. Because of this ask, I decided to post my most recent short story. I haven’t really edited it yet. Its very short. This will be the first piece of originally I post on here
Her name was Princess Sparkle Ranger Moon. Only I get to call her Princess Sparkle though. She loved glitter, and cheese pizza, and ice cream, and she liked pink, and yellow, but not icky red, but her favorite color was blue. She colors all her drawings in blue, even the ones on the wall. She had a magic wand, and was superhero queen of the world.
We met just after she turned three, and instantly came the best, best friends ever. We went everywhere together; to the movies, to the park, outer space. We even get to be mermaids whenever we want. She tells me everything, and I tell her everything. It’s the best.
“Happy Birthday to you,” The small crowd sang around the little curly haired girl with a crown on her head and the biggest smile on her face. “Make a wish, princess.”
She’s turned four today. And she saved me a spot right next to her. She wouldn’t even let anyone sit there. I was her best friend, and she swore she couldn’t turn four without me. We were gonna be best friends forever.
Princess Sparkle turned six today. She has lots of new friends because she’s a big girl now, and is in the first grade. We play together at recess. The other kids call her ‘Rina. But not me. She’s still Princess Sparkle to me. Princess Sparkle likes unicorn stickers now, and chocolate chips cookies. Her favorite color is still blue though. She called dibs. Because blue is the prettiest color in the world. My eyes are blue, and she says that’s why she likes me the best.
The birthday party was really fun. I played with a lot of the other kids. One of them, Lena, even brought a friend like me; her name was Daisy. And Princess Sparkle told them I’m her best friend forever and ever. She let me help her blow out her birthday candles too.
I liked Daisy. We played together when the other kids were busy playing pretend. Daisy said Lena was her fourth kid. She said she’d have another soon. Lena was growing up, and that she didn’t need Daisy that much anymore. Daisy said it happened with every kid, and even that Princess Sparkle would grow up too.
She turned seven today, and had the best party ever. There were games and superheroes. And Princess Sparkle was Supergirl. Because Supergirl gets to dress in blue and blue was the best color ever. I got to be her sidekick. There was a piñata that looked like a bat. We didn’t play together a lot though. It was fine though. Princess Sparkle was having so much fun. And we planned a deep sea diving trip soon. Princess Sparkle said she was going to invite her new friend Melony. I can’t wait. And then after that, she promised we’d go dancing on Jupiter.
We’re going to have the best time ever. No matter what Daisy said. Princess Sparkle wouldn’t just stop being my friend. Or stop playing with me. Princess Sparkle was my best friend forever.
It was her eighth birthday, and everyone called her Sabrina now. She wore glasses, and didn’t always like them. But they were blue, and she liked blue. We haven’t talked in a while. Princess Sparkle was always really busy these days. She was in girl scouts, and in ballet. She was always dancing. She loved dancing. It was why the party was a Dance Party. All her friends were there. But none of them said hi to me. It made me feel bad. I didn’t mind too much because Princess Sparkle was really happy all day. I was in the back but I got to see her blow out her candles. Melony sat next to her. She’s Princess Sparkle’s other best friend. I like to think I’m still her best, best friend though. She still smiled at me sometimes when she’s alone in her room. She draws pictures of me and her going on adventures. She likes to draw now, not just color.
I hope we play together again soon. I miss her. I miss Daisy too. We don’t see each other that often anymore. She has a new kid. He just turned five. He was really nice.
Her tenth birthday was a blast. It was a pool party. And everyone came. Even kids I never met before. Princess Sparkle was a really good swimmer. Everyone said so. Especially after she showed how brave she was and jumped off the highest board. I knew she was brave though. We used to fight pirates and evil space mummies. One time, we even dove into a volcano to rescue a giant diamond.
We don’t play together anymore though. She hadn’t even said hi in forever. It was like she couldn’t even see me. Daisy said something like this would happen. But I didn’t want to believe it. Princess Sparkle and me were the best, best friends, forever and ever. Even if we don’t play anymore. Or go on adventures. Even if she never said hi to me again. She was my best friend. Though I’m not her’s anymore. Melony and Sam was her best friends. They did everything together. They had the most fun ever. They even wore matching swim suit.
Princess Sparkle wore a blue one because blue is still the best color ever. I’m happy she still liked blue.
She was eleven now. She didn’t want a little kid party, she said. She wanted to go play mini golf with her friends. Maybe laser tag. Or go to the movies. I think it was because Melony moved a little while go. Princess Sparkle cried a lot. I heard her telling Melony on the phone that she didn’t want to have a party without her best friend.
I told her that she had lots of friends still. They all really liked her. Princess Sparkle could still have a party. She should still have a party. But she couldn’t hear me. She hasn’t been able to hear me for a long time. It was fine though. Her mom told her the same thing. Melony told her the same thing. She didn’t listen to them either. She just cried harder when she had to get off the phone
I wish I could comfort her like I used to, like whenever she fell down or got an owie. I’d cry with her and hug her and then she’d feel better. I can’t hug her anymore though. I hadn’t been able to for a long time. She hadn’t been able to see me for a long time. I still cross her mind a lot whenever she looks at her old drawings. It’s why I’m still here. Daisy said I should’ve faded and moved on a long time ago. But I don’t want to.
Princess Sparkle decided to go play Laser tag after all. She was on the blue team. The blue still made her smile.
I hadn’t seen Princess Sparkle smile so big since the time we rescued Peter Pan from zombie Captain Hook, and he declared her leader of the Lost Boys. But I guess turning thirteen was a pretty big deal too. She did a slumber party for her birthday and all the cool girls got invited. Most of them were cheerleaders like her. Or on the dance team like her. Or on the swim team like her. Or were from the art club because they liked to draw and paint like her. She was still really busy. So busy she only thought of me once every now and then. And the time between the two was very long.
So long that sometimes, I don’t even see myself when she does. It was like I was there but not really. Was this fading? Or maybe fading was when one second I was there and then I’m gone, and when I come back months had gone by.
I’ll have to ask Daisy, she has a new kid. Princess Sparkle’s little neighbor Callie. Callie was really nice and loved to play.
Princess Sparkle wore red pajamas. I wonder why she didn’t wear her blue ones. She still liked blue, right? She had dips.
She thought about me today. I can’t believe it. She thought about me today. Her mom had brought me up, I guess, which made Princess Sparkle laugh.
She was wearing a red dress, and was saying something about junior prom. I wonder what day it is. Princess Sparkle looked a lot older. Taller. Her hair was longer. Did I miss her birthday? I hope I didn’t.
Princess Sparkle laugh again, “God, I can’t believe I used to tell everyone I was best friends with a dragon.”
Why not? Why couldn’t she believe it? I was right here. If she just tried, she could see me. She could see me and we’d be best friends again. We’d go on adventures. I’d take her back to mermaid land. All the mermaids miss her. They ask about her a lot.
“A dragon with blue eyes,” Her mom corrected, “And who was never, ever bigger than you. Oh god, what was its name?” Her mom told Captain Sparkles to pose so she could take pictures. “You were a kid. Little kids do that.”
They took more pictures. And I wished more than anything for her just to look at me. But I can already feel myself going again.
“You look amazing, sweetie.”
Princess Sparkled squealed, “I know! When I saw this dress, I knew I had to have it. The cut is amazing. Plus I love red. It’s my favorite.”
Red? What about blue? When did her favorite color become red? I still remember when it was blue.
She was leaving today. She had packed up her boxes in the car and was going to away to school. It was a good school, but it was far away, which was why she had to leave. Princess Sparkle wanted to fix people’s hearts. I think she’ll be really good at it. She could always make anyone feel better. Princess Sparkle would be the greatest doctor ever. Though, I think she only wanted to be to a Doctor because then she could become really good at fixing kid’s owies. So they would never be sad like she was when she learned her ankle didn’t heal as well as it should. She’d never be a professional dancer.
I’m happy she decided that being a doctor is good toon. Even if she has to pack up all her things and probably leave forever. But at least I got to see her one last time. She came across an old drawing of a polka dotted dragon with blue and eyes, and tried to remember why she drew. Or when she drew it. It was the first drawing she ever did of me. She had been excited about her new crayons. I told her it was the best picture ever.
She didn’t remember. She threw away the picture.
It was fine. She hadn’t been able to see me for a very long, long time. Or talk to me. Or hear me. And now she couldn’t remember me. She only knew the stories her parents told her about when she was small and had a pretend friend. Princess Sparkle was too old. Her hair was short and straight and a bright purple. Her favorite color was purple now.
I think this is it. I think this is the last time. When she thought of me now, I didn’t come back like I used to. I was more like a ghost from the scary stories Princess Sparkle used to hear whenever her Girl Scout troop went camping.
I’m less than a ghost though. I’m less than a memory. And if she’s not here, there was no longer a reason for me to stay, to hang around her room on the edges where her childhood was still visible to see.
I know I can’t go with her. I’ve known that for a while. I think I’m going to move on too. Find a new… friend.
Still, she would always be Princess Sparkles to me. Princess Sparkles who liked glitter, and ice cream, and blue. She really liked blue.
“What in the world,” Sabrina uttered as came across yet another of crazy, rainbow mess, of a drawing. It was clearly a dragon, she realized. With gold horns and the bluest, blue eyes she could ever imagine. There was a scribbled name next to it, and she could just barely make out what it read. “Sir… Bonkers?”
I smiled, bright and big, and puffed my chest out. “Princess Sparkle Ranger Moon.” I saluted her like I did whenever she was about to lead us on another adventure. Only this time, we would be going on two separate ones. It was be fun. We’d both have the best time ever.
“We never did go dancing on Jupiter,” I thought as I faded away for what I knew would be the last time. “I hope you gets there one day.” She would, I knew.
Princess Sparkles could do anything.
I knew that because she was my best friend. Even if I was just her imaginary one.
I hoped she’d be happy. I hoped she lived happily ever after. I hope she always remembered that she was brave and liked to dance and color. I hoped she’d remember her favorite color used to be blue…
…His name was Eric, and he turned four a few days ago. He was the greatest ever, like of all time.

TCM Day 18: High Seas
The merpeople had been following their ship for three days now. Syaoran didn’t know how many there were. He had only managed to get a good look at two of them. One was a young mermaid with a long pink tail with frilly translucent fins, and she had the greenest eyes he had ever seen. She liked to swim up to the side of the boat and pull herself up to watch him work. She never spoke - Syaoran wasn’t sure if she could speak, and whenever he said anything to her she would squeak and dive back beneath the waves. He was always sad to see her go, certain that this time she would leave for good, but she was always back to watch him the next morning.
The other was older and male. His tail was longer, and his fins more delicate. His scales were mixed blue and silver that caught the light with an almost metallic gleam. Most often he was seen playing in the wake of the ship, but sometimes he would come up to the side like the girl did.
Syaoran wished he wouldn’t, though, because whenever the merman came up he would inevitably bother the captain.
Like right now.
Syaoran was sitting at the side of the ship with his legs dangling down, showing the mermaid his compass. She appeared fascinated, and kept pointing at the needles as they moved on their own. Syaoran was trying to explain it to her when there was a bellow from the other side of the small vessel. Syaoran and the mermaid both started, and she quickly disappeared beneath the water. Syaoran turned.
“Captain, is there a problem?” he asked, getting to his feet.
Captain Kurogane was dripping water, and there was murder in his eyes. “That blasted fish,” he growled through clenched teeth. He seized a broom and stabbed it into the water, and the telltale gleam of silvery scales could be made out beneath the water as the blond merman dodged it.
His laughing face surfaced just out of Kurogane’s reach. He had big eyes of unearthly blue. He splashed his tail at Kurogane. It hit the surface of the water with a wet slap, and sent a dollop of water straight into Kurogane’s face.
“I’ll get you a towel,” Syaoran said and retreated below deck before Kurogane could fly into a rage. Even with a layer of wood between them, Syaoran could hear Kurogane’s angry shouts and the sound of him attempting to stab the merman with the broom.
The water fight had not stopped by the time Syaoran returned with a towel for the captain. He held it out to Kurogane, who waved it off. “Save it. I’m gonna catch that damn fish,” he said. For a terrifying moment Syaoran thought the big man was going to fling himself off the side of the boat to wrestle with a merman, but he continued slapping the water where the silver-blue scales could be seen, until the merman got bored and disappeared.
This happened every day that the merpeople followed them, often multiple times. Sometimes it was the mermaid who drew her friend away, and neither of them ever appeared at night. Syaoran would have thought there were only the two of them, but sometimes when the merman would tease Kurogane, he would see the same glittering scales somewhere else in the water. It was never close enough for him to see who or what it belonged to, and whether it was another merperson or a regular fish. And sometimes, when they passed distant rocks, he would see multiple long, graceful bodies sunning themselves on the rocks. He knew the girl was there, because her pink tail was unlike any other sea creature in these parts. The other shapes he couldn’t make out. It could be other merpeople, but it could just as easily be seals or seal lions.
Sometimes he asked Kurogane if he could see better, but Kurogane would only grunt and say he didn’t care about any stupid fish. Shougo would go to find his binoculars, but the time he got back the merpeople would have slipped back into the water.
The weather grew colder as they made the transition from autumn to winter. One morning the girl peeked up while Syaoran was cleaning. “Hello,” he said, smiling at her as he always did.
As usual, the girl didn’t speak, but she held out a pretty pink shell to him. “Oh, that’s lovely,” Syaoran said to her, thinking that she wanted him to admire it.
She shook the shell slightly, staring at him. “Hm?” He didn’t understand.
She placed the shell on the deck, as far forward as she could reach. Then she retracted her arm and looked back up at him.
“Oh. It’s for me?” Syaoran asked.
The mermaid smiled. It was cute, even with her sharp teeth, so unlike a human's. Syaoran came over and picked up the shell. It was smooth on the inside, with little bumps and ridges on the outside, and mixed shades of pink, peach, and white. “Thank you. I’ll treasure it,” he told her.
The girl looked happy. Then she vanished beneath the waves. Syaoran didn’t think anything of it, until she didn’t reappear the next day.
Her blond friend did, to give Kurogane a splash and a kiss on the cheek that made Kurogane blush and sputter with shock. The merman grinned, then he too vanished.
Syaoran often caught himself pausing in his work to stare at the surface of the water, looking for his friend. And while Kurogane pretended not to worry, Syaoran saw how his captain’s head would snap up every time something splashed in the water. When it turned out to be a dolphin or a fish, he always looked disappointed and annoyed.
By the time spring came, they had both stopped looking. Until one morning when Syaoran went to dump a bucket of waste water over the side, and found familiar green eyes staring up at him.
Syaoran was so startled he nearly dropped the bucket, but the girl beamed and heaved herself out of the water to trill at him. “Oh, you’re back,” he said, smiling. “I was worried.”
She flicked her tail happily, and touched the hollow of her throat. Syaoran mimicked the gesture, and felt the smooth shell he had strung on a leather cord and hung there. “Yeah, of course I kept it. You gave it to me,” he told her.
She blushed and ducked under the water until only the top half of her head was poking out, as though shy.
“I have something for you, too,” Syaoran said. He dug around in his pocket and pulled out a bracelet of sea glass. He hoped it would fare well under the sea. He held it out to her. “For you. It goes on your... here,” he draped the bracelet over his opposite arm to show her.
She hauled herself back up the side and waved her arm at him. She was so excited that Syaoran had to grab her arm to hold it still long enough for her to clasp the bracelet around her wrist. Her skin was surprisingly cool, and slippery.
While she smiled and admired the bracelet, there was a great splash and a bellow from the other side of the ship.
“YOU GODDAMN ANNOYING FISH!”
But Kurogane didn’t sound as angry as usual.

Oh yea and in 3 days i’m going to the beach for 2 weeks. Like i said August is hectic, but u still wanna write everything because i have a plan for most days. so i’ll post all 31 of them even if they are a bit late..
ANYWAY, that was a an update on my life i guess xD I hope you enjoy, Love Dia ~
Fantasy - Part 1
Sasuke
Everyone does thing they don’t particularly like, you wake up early and go everyday to school with people that you can’t wait to become part of your past, you sit thought awkward talks and weird situations cuz you can’t see an escape route. This last one is the case I am in, a weird situation, I am with my parents, my brother, his wife and their small daughter at Disney world because it is Kara's 7th birthday and she wished for the past 3 years to come here. Mom and dad got tired after the first 2 hours of wandering around; Itachi started feeling unwell and pucked twice after riding about 12 times the rollercoaster so he and Anko went to the pharmacy to get something to ease his stomach and they’re taking a small break so here I am stuck with my u year old niece who is dressed like a princess walking around the amusement park. Kara qas so excited for the first hour and she kept running around but got tired quite fast but Itachi carried her around in his arms princess style for almost 3 hours so she is once more full pf energy. Who thought that leaving a 22 year old male with a 7 year old girl I don’t know.
I am holding her hand as we walk around and all of a sudden she stops and screams so loud my ears start ringing; I can’t even find my footing and see what is happening because Kara starts pulling me to the far right and I do my best to steer her from hitting and tripping people over.
We walk through a tunnel that painted deep blue and as we get to the end the temperature drops and I haven’t realized how hot it was outside until this moment when it finally feels cool. The song ‘Under the sea' from the Little Mermaid is playing on repeat. I only know the song because Little Mermaid is Kara's favorite Disney movie and whenever I babysit her or just go by Itachi's the movie is permanently on.
“Sasuke look!” she says and pulls on my pants leg; she is behind me now and hides, looking shyly at a group of kids that stare at an aquarium tank. I don’t notice anything unusual until one small girl screams on top of her lungs ‘mermaid’ and a lot of kids move around and looks at her and I see it, or more like, I see her. In the tank is a real life mermaid, with blue hair and beautiful liliac eyes, she swims around and waved to the kids, smiles and them and when a mother holds her daughter a little higher over the aquarium she comes out for air and holds the girl’s hand.
“Can we do that? I want to hold hands with the mermaid…” Kara is bit a shy kid but now she looks overwhelmed, anxious and a bit scared yet very excited. She looks into my eyes waiting for my reply so I only nod. We walk to the tank and as we get closer a large group of kids pair off 2 by 2 and follow a lady who I assume is their teacher and another teacher is behind them so we are pretty much the only ones at the tank. Kara is still behind my leg, the mermaid is under the eater and swims around putting on a really cool show. Just the fact that she can hold her breath for that long is impressive. She looks towards us and smiles and waved at Kara.
I look at my little niece as well and I pick her up like the mother did and the mermaid comes up for air, crosses her arms over the glass wall and puts her head there and smiles big at Kara.
“Are you a real mermaid?” Kara asks and shyly touches her cheek. The mermaids smile boardes and she looks absolutely stunning, I feel lightning bolts shoot up my spine, she is so much more beautiful up close.
Hinata
I enjoy it more when there are smaller groups of people at my tank, I like talking to the kids and playing my character, so being alone with this little girl and her...father, older brother(?) is pretty cool, she’s so cute dressed as a princess and her eyes are big and full of innocence. She's also old enough to have a conversation with. I'd give her 7 or 8 years and I'm quite good at guessing children’s ages. She asked me if I'm a real mermaid, that is one of the most frequent questions. The tail I wear is very well made and it truly looks authentic and I take pride in my swimming skills and in the amount of time I can stay underwater without having to come out and breath, also behind the rock where u can’t see, on the other side of the tank you can go and breath air and the kids can see only tour tail so I tend to do that unless there is someone who wants to talk or hold my hand.
“Yes princess, I am a real mermaid” her smile is shy and so cute. She nods like what I said makes sense. I look from her to the man holding her and I have to stop a sigh, he’s so good-looking and he is staring right at me. I give him the same smile because I can’t break character, but his grin makes my skin tingle and I really want to touch him.
“Is this your home? Are you a prisoner here? Do you want us to save you?” She looks up worried at the man and he chuckles lightly at her questions. I'm a bit startled, I have been asked before if I live here but no one offered to help me escape.
“Can I tell you a secret?” I tell her and pull myself even more out of the water. She looks at me very serious and nods so I lean in and whisper in her ear. “You can’t tell anyone, but this isn’t my house, nor am I prisoner. I work here. When I get out of the water and I'm dry I have legs just like you do but when I'm in the water I am a mermaid, so I am here to help little girls like me and to talk with beautiful and kind princesses like yourself” after I finish my little speech I still don’t back up because I can feel the heat coming from the man and I also can smell him, he smells refreshing, like ice and mint but with something else that I can’t put my finger on but I'm willing to bet it’s just him, he smells delicious and very manly.
“I’ll tell you a secret too” The little girl says “My name is Kara and I'm not a princess” she looks at me carefully, waiting for my reaction. I only nod and smile.
“Well Kara, I am Hinata and I have to disagree, you are a princess. Being a princess has little to do with royal blood or fancy clothing, it is all about how you act, if you are kind and friendly, loyal and loving and good. I can see into your soul and you are a princess deep inside, never doubt that” Her eyes widen, and she smiles at me.
“Sasuke did you hear? I'm a princess” He smiles at her. I take in what she said, his name is Sasuke. She didn’t call him dad and he is too young to have such a big kid so I doubt he is her dad. “Can you see in his soul? Is he a prince too?”
I make a show of looking at him from head to toe like I'm considering her question when in reality I just want to check him out. After I've taken everything in I look back up at his face, narrow my eyes and look at his chest. I pull myself out even more and I lay my hand flat on his chest and close my eyes. I only now realize that I probably wet his shirt, but I can’t stop the show now. After a couple of seconds my hand can’t take it, just from touching him I feel a bit dizzy so I open my eyes and nod very serous to myself before looking back at Kara, I don’t look up at Sasuke because I am scared of what I'll see there.
“Yes he is a good soul, he is also a prince” Kara’s eyes light up and she looks at Sasuke with a lot of love and admiration, I finally look at his face because I expect him to stare and smile at Kara but instead his stare is on me so intensly, a lot of feelings hit me all of a sudden and I feel overwhelmed.
Sasuke
When she put her hand on my chest to “feel if my soul id good” I thought my heart will jump out of my chest. I can’t help but stare at her. I want to ask her when she finished work because something tells me we’ll still be here when she’s done, and I want to meet her. Or I want to ask her for her number, but I can’t do that in front of Kara, it would ruin the image Hinata painted for her character. Hinata...even her name is beautiful. Kara looks at me and asks me to put her down and says that she wants to take a picture in front of the tank as Hinata floats behind her. I take a few pictures of the two of them posing. I look around and see a smaller tank with lots of fish inside that is just a bit to the left, but far enough that Kara won’t hear what I talk about with Hinata. I also take a quick look around and see that it’s not very crowded so I don’t think new kids will come to Hinata.
“Why don’t you go look at the fishes for a moment, I want to talk to the mermaid about how I should act now that I found out I'm a prince” I tell Kara lamely, thankfully she believes me and goes to look at the fishes. I return to the tank and softly knock in the glass to get her attention; she is once again swimming around. When she looks at me and sees now kids around, she rises a brow and I just shrug. She comes out to talk to me anyway.
“You’re not supposed to it the glass. It says that there. She points to a piece of paper that is on the wall next to her. “Not respecting the rules is not very prince-like of you”
“Sorry I just needed your attention.” She smiles, for real this time not the fake-princess one she shows every kid; and for a moment I forget how to breath. “Thank you for talking so much to Kara, she loves mermaids whenever I babysit her for my brother Little Mermaid is all she wants to watch” I intentionally made it very clear that Kara is my niece so she wouldn’t think I was her father or anything.
“It wasn’t big deal. She's very cute” I nod, and silence falls over us.
“When do you get out of work? And can you give me your number?” I cringe internally. I'm better than this, I have mad game with girls but this one makes me feel a bit weird, like I'm off balance in some way.
She chuckles “I get out in an hour and half. And as for my number...how about we meet when I get out and I can give it to you then? Would that work?” she asks and I try really hard not to jump and pump my fist in the air in a “i-did-it" pose.
“Yea that works, cool.” I try to pretend like she doesn’t affect me at all but that’s a failure. “I’ll meet you here in about 2 hours?” I take into consideration that she probably has to shower and change.
“Yes, 2 hours is perfect. Bye bye Prince Sasuke” she says and goes back to swimming. I go back to Kara.
“What did she say about being a prince?’ she asks looking up at me and taking my hand to hold.
“She said I have potential but I need some help, so she offered to give me classes on hoe to be a good prince”

Ezra: Month 1 of Animal Crossing New Horizons!
Hello all! I’m here to tell my journey of the first month of New Horizons on Cillia Island!
There’ll be lots of pictures! I hope you enjoy! Future updates will probably be daily because this is... long at first... but I promise it slows down!
This post covers 32 days (skipping a few). It is indented to be a fun, long, read! I’ll say it’s a 10-15 minute read just to be on the longer side!
-Ezra; Island Resident Representative; Local Island Decorator; Mayor of Cillia (if it had a mayor hehe!)
Thursday, March 19th, 4pm -7GMT. The virus is present, but just starting. I have been home for not even 24 hours of my job that was supposed to keep me out of town all March. I make a phone call to a local Gamestop, asking if they’re still open, and how the midnight release of Animal Crossing is going to work. The worker tells me I can go pick it up right then, because they’re going to be closing early and had JUST gotten a phone call from corporate that they could give it out early - you can assume what I did /immediately/ after lol.
~~~
Starting was incredibly easy! I’ve had my dead name as my New Leaf Mayor forever, and I loved that city name so Ezra and Cillia it was! And we began! My starting villagers were Cherry and Roald with Cherry Trees (fitting!), and I said I wasn’t gonna restart no matter what... so here we go!
I picked a town that had a West Beach River Mouth as well as a South River Mouth - which matched my town in New Leaf! (The south exit, and the flow of the river - but the west exit would be where my original upper waterfall was so the shape was the same). Picked northern hemisphere (where I am). And placed my house right in a river bend (with the initial plan to section me off into my own island within an island!). Cherry and Roald’s homes were placed along the west-running river right at the top, with not much effort or forethought. Not that it was a bad thing! I knew they wouldn’t be permanent villagers, but wanted to give them some beautiful scenery while they were here.
I can definitely tell that I’m still acting and thinking like a mayor even thought I’m only an island rep. ... this doesn’t change bwahaha!
Day 1 March 19th, was all setup and prep for our REAL day 1! Blathers already was about to have a decent encyclopedia, and I was getting nook miles left and right - already expecting a house instead of a tent the next day. I wasn’t too surprised, I’ve done this song and dance before, and I’m just here to have a great time in my island paradise! Getting Blathers was definitely my highest priority!
Day 2 March 20th, was... difficult... giving 15 things to Blathers one at a time and finding 30 iron for the Nooklings was excruciating lol - but getting fossils and a pole vault to absolutely DECIMATE the weed ecosystem filled me with a glee that I’m sure you can understand. I managed to upgrade my house, get Blathers and Nooks Cranny all in one day *whew*. Now, time to have some fun!
I build my first QR code which was a cool outfit I called PRIDE Coat! It is a black coat with drawstrings and pockets on the front - a lil’ trans flag on the left arm, a bi flag on the right arm, and my (pretty decent!) attempt at a rainbow of paint (in the gay flag colors) falling down my back! And I made an Iwatobi Swim Club Beanie to match the one I wear every day!!
I then played with my Passport a bit to have my title be “Future Fish” which is Free! Eternal Summer (the second season’s) Ending Song!!!! Which I thought was SUPER cute and VERY me. (It’s my second fave anime. I plan on making a Reigisa outfit in the future!!).
Already by the end of Day 2 I had my hair customization options, the tool wheel, and the DIY that I needed to buy. Everything Nook was offering I managed to get my grubby little day 2 hands on! So you KNOW my hair went to pink pigtails IMMEDIATELY. And took /many/ photos. But since my outfits are all the same just imagine the ones you just saw but with pink instead of blonde!
With that it was time to get my 3 villagers that would accompany Cherry and Roald (This correlates to getting the iron for Nooklings!) I wanted to grab the first 3 villagers that I saw just to try some new friends this go around - as I had already planned on making my New Leaf family my permies! So my first three were Ketchup (nice!), Hornsby (Aww!!), and... GALA!?!?
Well how convenient! That was one permie immediately out of the way!! Welcome back, Gala!!! So excited to have you on the island!
Then I caught an Oarfish and saw *GASP* WISP!!!! To which, I immediately ran up to him and demanded he bring my girlfriend, Cece the Squirrel, to the island. He, instead, got spooked, had me collect his spirit, and offered me items. *sigh* Ok - can’t get Cece that way - so I decided to sleep!
How naive I was...
Day 3 March 21st, was both good and bad! I had access to Nooklings, but that was about it. Blathers was getting a crowded amount of critters outside his roped off building, but it would be all worth it, tomorrow. But!! I found my first spider island! Which I sold off to Nooklings and happily went to sleep!
Day 4 March 22nd, had SO MUCH to offer! Blathers, Daisy Mae, Harvy, WHEW. Pretty sure I had a visit from Gulliver either today or yesterday, too! Nothing could POSSIBLY ruin this day!!
Oh how wrong.
How so terribly wrong I was.
Animal Crossing New Horizons is an incredible game that lets you invite so many villagers to your island!
All of them. But 14.
14 Villagers from New Leaf are not available. The Sanrio Characters. And the Amiibo Characters.
No Felyne. No Ganon, Epona, Medli, or W. Link. No Viche or Inkwell. No Rilla, Chai, Morty, or Etoille.
No Toby.
No Chelsea.
...
No Cece.
...
To say that I was devastated would be an understatement. I was absolutely crushed. Not only were 3 of my permies out, but the one villager I couldn’t live without, wasn’t allowed in the game. She didn’t even get a poster.
So I did what any crushed lover would do, and made a memoir to her.
And it started raining. Poetic. (I was only cheered up slightly when I got to catch a Coelacanth!) I didn’t do this until much later (April 4th) but for the sake of not talking about her too much, I would open New Leaf and wrote her a goodbye love letter, which, honestly, makes me tear up whenever I read it.
And I went to sleep.
I have nothing for Day 5 other than scanning all my amiibo cards for the POSTERS which are UNDOUBTEDLY my FAVORITE new feature in the game!!
Day 6, March 24th, GALA MOVED IN! I was so excited, and it was definitely needed. My best friend also came over and we goofed off and we met each other’s villagers! Then I went to an island tour and got A PANSY HYBRID ISLAND!!!! OOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I went crazy. Absolutely destroyed that ecosystem. I went full feral. MINE. ALL MINE!!!
And I caught my first Sturgeon!! Which was awesome because I only had the rare fish left in my March collection! Trying to get a Golden Trout, I made many many fish bait, and got the 200 clam achievement! Which was exciting because that unlocked “Mermaid” for titles!! I doubt I’ll change from Future Fish, but Mermaid would be a second pick!
For Day 7 I went to a good friend’s village and desperately tried to make Chiyuki Fujito’s blue dress from Runway de Waratte... it didn’t work... but I like the attempt! (Will send pics in messenger if you’re curious!).
Day 8, March 26th, was the day ISABELLE WAS HERE!!! Welcome to your island paradise, QUEEN. I definitely dressed for the part ;)
This, of course, opened up tunes and flag options! Flag was incredibly easy. It’s going to stay my picture of Cece until she’s added back into the game (which will probably be never, so...)
The tunes was much harder for me. But since I couldn’t think of anything else I made it “SO. NO. CHI. NO. SA. DA. ME.” from the first Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Opening (which is, ironically, what is playing as I type this... SO NO CHI NO SA DA ME <- was written in time with the music playing. Incredible.) It’s definitely not going to be that forever, but for now it makes me giggle!
Nothing for Day 9 except for a SICK tarantula island :) love those furry babes! I also built my campsite! Tomorrow was going to be big!! Who on Earth was going to move in!?
Day 10, March 28th, now, I have what I like to call “chaotic luck”. I’ll catch the bus, but my gosh did I almost miss it. I was absolutely positive I failed that test, and I did, but the question I messed up doesn’t count and I passed! Cece isn’t in the game but do you know who’s at my campsite??
OFFICE
HETEROCHROMIA
TSUNDERE
TRANS
CAT
EXTRAORDINAIRE
RAAAAAAAAAAAYMOND!!!!
Can you even imagine my face??? Can you IMAGINE the jaw drop?? I moved him next to me IMMEDIATELY.
Day 12, March 30th, I saw kicks for the first time!!! Love that funky newsie skunk!
Day 13, March 31st, I saw Flick for the first time!!! Went on a mad tarantula hunt and made BANK. Fun story, I thought both Flick and C.J. were girls, so when I learned Flick was a boy I was really upset because I thought a canon gay ship was now straight, but WHOOPS they’re BOTH boys! 😎 Nice.
I also saw Celeste for the first time!!! Gosh how I missed her!! I actually sat and got all 200 stars in one night, just because of how much I like wishing on falling stars!!!
Day 14, April 1st, The Nightmare Begins. Love him or Hate him, Zipper was here. I won’t go on about the eggs. Everyone talks about the eggs. They sucked, fishing was a nightmare, not a big fan. I would end up not getting all the sakura DIYs which was very upsetting (but I’ll just get them next year). In INCREDIBLE news I got a golden trout!!! Which was the last thing I needed in my March encyclopedia - and it was on to April hunting! Every night thing I could get, I did! So I decided to set up my last 4 houses, and focus on getting K.K. Slider finally to my island!
The first house sold naturally to Pecan! NICE! I love squirrels so much! She was very welcome!
Day 15, April 2nd, in the interest in getting new villagers, I went on a tour and there she was: MERENGUE! She’s, truthfully, not a favorite of mine. She’s SO cute, but not someone I wanted permanently. However, she’s my other best friend’s FAVORITE and she doesn’t have a switch. So, there was NO WAY I wasn’t taking Merengue onto my island. I haven’t sent my friend pics, yet, but I hope I can soon!! She’s gonna be so happy!
Today was the first day I met C.J. which... stunning. Absolutely jaw dropping. I’m SMITTEN with a TAKEN BEAVER. He calls me fashionista. Asks about my anglersona. Takes selfies of/with me. He’s truly the ideal. I’d invite him back any day!
Over the next 3 days, Freya and Bruce move in as my last 2 villagers giving us a grand starting total of: Cherry, Roald, Ketchup, Hornsby, Gala, Raymond, Pecan, Merengue, Freya, and Bruce! Not bad not bad!
Day 19, April 6th, THE BEST GIRL IS HEEERE. LABEL CAME TO MY TOWN FOR THE FIRST TIME. I might have cried, honestly. I cannot believe someone that incredible would want to come to my island. She asked for me to give her an official look. Are you kidding me? Easy breezy. For my perfect outfit she rewarded me a Label Hat. Oh? DESIGNER? I was awestruck. The design was IMPECCABLE. The flavor was IMMACULATE.
One of my villagers also happened to gift me a Pink SPRITE COSTUME??? I, honestly, have never been more in love with an outfit in my entire life??? A pink Peter Pan outfit??? LEGENDARY.
Day 20, April 7th, I don’t quite remember what day K.K. Slider visited the island when I hit my 3 star rating - so we’ll say it was today lol. That meant ISLAND EDITING, but I didn’t know what to do, yet, so I didn’t worry too much about it!
Label’s hat came in MORE COLORS in the store today. YOU BET I bought all of them. The talent. But this meant that I had a pink hat to match my pink sprite costume and you bet I was LIVING my best life. I had also finished the Anklyosaurus which is my FAVORITE dinosaur so I was LIVING it up.
Later, Ketchup would approach me and ask to move. I was happy for her to explore new lands and bid her farewell, and gave her a sweet goodbye. With that, it was hunting time, and I found the perfect villager that would set everything in motion.
Day 22, April 9th, Label VISITS AGAIN!!!!!! Unfortunately, she asked for a sporty look, which I couldn’t pull off perfectly :/ So no new item from her... but my OUTFIT WAS FIRE AND WE WERE MAD CUTE TOGETHER.
Day 23, April 10th, the villager has moved in, the cryptid gyroid herself, COCO!!!
And her moving in gave me a BRILLIANT idea. I’d like to keep it under wraps for now, but I’m so, so, SO happy she’s here!
Day 24, April 11th, The Fishing Tourney. The Summer tourney will be significantly easier for me, now that I know you can double your points by fishing with someone else, but it took me HOURS to collect all the clams and get to 300 points. It wasn’t really worth it, but I love fish so much so I wasn’t going to miss a SINGLE thing. I got that gold trophy and I’m SO proud of myself.
Also my fishing outfit could slay for MILES
Straight Fire.
Day 25, April 12th, With a golden trophy in hand and the last day of eggies, I was feeling really confident. I had the means and the idea to change cliffs + water for a couple days and just... made what my brain came up with! I’ll keep this vague for now, because I’m really excited about the final results! Just know that everyday I edit a little bit more and come up with more ideas!
Day 26, April 13th, Happy Homestuck, Neil Bangs out the Tunes, and Thomas Sanders goes to the Wedding Day!! And it did NOT disappoint. Label for A 3RD TIME!!! She must like me as much as I like her >w<!! Today she gave out her cap!!! It’s, honestly, not my thing, I’d rather stick with the brim hats, but I do think they’re cute!! So I would buy them all the next day! The Able Sister’s haul on Day 27 was oh my gosh amazing!!! They had the cap, of course, but they also had THE OTHER SPRITE COSTUMES!! Which I bought all of them. And now I wear, near exclusively, this outfit in 5 different colors bwahaha!
Day 30, April 17th, I got my first golden item!!! The slingshot! Nice! Over the past few days, I’ve just been designing, moving houses, and building ramps! Learning new myth debunks, stuff like that!
I was also blessed with 3 encounters :OOOO I didn’t know this was even POSSIBLE!?
Day 31, April 18th, Disaster Strikes. I’ve been moving so many homes that I didn’t consider that a villager couldn’t move in because you were already doing a home thing for the day. So when I went to invite camper Gonzo to my town he declined!? I was devastated. He was SO cute and I thought he could move into Bruce’s house to keep the peace of personalities! I think he’s someone in the future who I’ll ask for a poster of or ask for an amiibo card of! I know I’m going to check the campsite first before moving any buildings from here on out! D’:
And that brings us to today,
Day 32, April 19th, one month from the day I started. I’ve been having the TIME of my life! There’s definitely been some ups and downs, but I have a goal in mind and it’s keeping me so focused! I organized an entire flower field today!! Due to a turnip mishap, I happen to be 2 days ahead of everyone, but I have been good about time traveling other than that. This means that I am fortunate enough to get my Nooklings upgrade 2 days early and they’ll be open tomorrow!!! I’m... I’m so excited!!! I NEED more flower seeds!!!!!!!
The future looks incredibly bright on Cillia island, and I cannot wait to hear about everyone else’s month!!
Thank you for your time. Please enjoy these random favorite photos of mine!
Daughter of the Village Chief// H.H. x Female Reader Pt. 1
Warnings (throughout story): Slight mentions of sexual things, sexual misconduct, rape, and cuss words.
Wow so lowkey this is kinda bad and there’s not a lot of Harry in this right now but this is more of a intro chapter and a setting up the story chapter to what’s to come! If anything confuses you feel free to dm me. I also take requests so please feel free to ask as well :)
Summary: Being the daughter of Moana did have its perks from time to time. The ocean who once was a friend of hers had now grown to be a friend of yours and you wouldn’t have known what you would’ve done without it. However one day might come to pass where you will need to know the truth about your past. The real truth. Because all though you had been swimming with the ocean and talking to tefiti all your life, being at auradon was about to change everything and bring the biggest twist to your life, that your mom might not even be your mom and that a certain pirate was soon to be someone to love and not to hate.
“28.... 29..... 30!”
Suddenly light, light everywhere as you took your hands off your eyes and took in all the sights to see.
You were currently in a game of hide and seek with your favorite friend, the ocean.
“Hmmmm I wonder where you went ocean....” you began, sarcastically looking around. “Maybe..... there! Got you!”
Pointing at the water, suddenly the ocean seemed to rise up and nod in response. You laughed at the body of water, clearly it having no where else to hide every time so you were always destined to win.
“Alright how about best 50 outa 100?” You asked, tying up your H/C locks up.
“Yeah I don’t think so little one”
You froze at the voice already knowing who it was.
“Hey Uncle Maui! I was just about to go to bed I swear but isn’t the sunset just so beautiful? haha...”
You tried so hard to stall your time but your Uncle always could see through just like he could with your mom.
“I’m sorry Y/N,” he began. “You have a big day tomorrow remember, first day at a great school with great new people! Better than being stuck on this small little island village for the rest of your life! Now come on, you need to be in bed right now so you can wake up early tomorrow and wish everyone bye.”
The new school he was talking about was in a kingdom called Auradon, meaning that the school was obviously fit to be called “Auradon Prep” run by a King named Rolland and his wife. You wanted so desperately not to go, you weren’t a princess or elegant at all! You were adventurous, outspoken and the daughter of the village Chieftess, yet you would have to fake a smile and go anyway to please your mother and make the village proud.
You sighed and bid the ocean goodnight returning to your cot and resting for the next day.
When the morning did come you made sure to wake up extra early to do all your favorite things on the island for a final time. You helped Hei Hei escape a crazy cook, played tag with Pua, hide and seek with the ocean, and had a lovely girl talk with Tefiti to whom you poured your heart and soul out to.
It was soon time to leave and You hugged your mother tightly, tears pouring down your cheeks. You really would miss the island, a friend as much as the ocean and much more, a home.
Saying your goodbyes to everyone, a black limo then pulled up, the royal car to Auradon. Out stepped a young boy, no older than you, who looked to be about fourteen or fifteen. He smiled a bright smile at you, the creases of his eyes going up in the process.
“Hello I’m Ben!” He exclaimed. “I’m the soon to be future king of Auradon. It was my idea to invite you to join our school, I’m trying to branch out to more students from around the world and you just happen to be the first person I chose! I’m really glad you’re joining us and I hope we can get to know each other some more and become good friends!”
He stuck his hand out for you to shake smiling all the while long. Shy and like a small child, you hid behind your mother slightly peering over at him. You couldn’t help but stare into his eyes. You saw something in them, almost longing, as if in for a friend. You swallowed any ounce of fear you had and walked forward towards him grabbing his hand and watching his smile somehow increase even more.
“I’m Y/N. I hope we can become good friends too.”
~~~~~~~~~~
About three to four years later and here you were. A young woman, sprawled all over her bed, studying for a stupid final that was going to kill her.
“Ughhhhhh” you groaned out in frustration.
“Come on Y/N it’s really not that hard I promise!” said your roommate of almost three years now Lonnie. She was a beautiful girl and was one of your closest friends. Being the daughter of Mulan gave her excellent agility and intelligence as well.
“I know it’s not but it’s just... UGHHH!!!” You screeched in annoyance and anger at the problem on the paper.
“Knockity Knockity! How are my favorite princesses doing?” you heard a voice say, looking up at the doorframe to see it was only the new king and your first ever friend, Ben.
“Ok one im not your favorite princess for sure, and two Y/N is the daughter of the Chieftess! Not a princess.” Said Lonnie knowing how annoyed you’d get whenever someone confused the two.
You slowly perked up from the bed at the sight of Ben. You never got to see your best friend due to all of the new duties he had and all the new students he had to deal with.
“Ah Mr. Bennie Boo! How can we help you?” You said teasing him with the nickname his ex Audrey used to call him and his current girlfriend Mal, who kept it alive.
“Haha funny” he began, “hey I actually wanted to ask you a personal question Y/N/N...”
“Oh sure! Of course! Lonnie can you give us a sec?” You asked your brunette friend with apologetic eyes. She simply nodded and smiled leaving, probably going to find her crush Jay and talk with him more.
Ben took a seat next to you on your bed and suddenly became serious.
“Y/N... it’s about Mal. Something has been off with her lately and I don’t know what! I’m asking you because she seems to trust you a lot and tell you everything and I just need to know what’s happening... am I doing something wrong? Is she not happy with me?”
It was true, you and the VK kids had gotten very close when they arrived at Auradon. At first they seemed to hate everyone but because you guys could relate very well with both feeling new to the place and since you weren’t so girly they eventually almost took you in as a VK yourself.
You assured Ben it was nothing and told him to give Mal some space. Yes you knew what she was going through but couldn’t just give away all her secrets to him and betray her trust. You just told him she was going through things and needed to think alone.
He sadly smiled but agreed with your advice, talking a bit more about how life had been treating both of you before he had to return to more kingly duties that awaited him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
About two hours later and you were still having no luck in studying for the stupid final that awaited you. Because Lonnie had decided to bring Jay to your shared room to talk and giggle, rather loudly might you add, you simply moved your self to Mal and Evies room thankful no one was there so there would be silence.
Yet not even two minutes after you got there Carlos arrived with duke in tow ready to chill and play around with the dog. When you had first met the VKs you had to admit you had an adorable little crush on him but now... now it was so much more. You began twisting your hair around your finger from the ponytail it was in nervously but tried to remain calm none the less.
“C-Carlos” you began, “as amazing as you are and as much as I love duke I’m really trying to study! Do you think you and duke could possibly play at the park?” It hurt to ask that as the truth was you really didn’t want him to leave but you just needed to study. Little did you know it hurt him a bit too.
“Sorry, I promise to be a good boy and listen to you ahaha” he said getting ready to leave but coming over for a hug before he did so.
“Atta boy! Good boy!” You said playfully giving him a hug and a nice, gentle rub on his head. This definitely earned a small content sigh from the boy but he simply played it off as nothing more.
“I’ll see ya later Y/N/N!” he exclaimed now happy and ready to play with duke. You chucked to yourself and prepared to continue studying when not even ten seconds later Mal came bursting in hyperventilating.
“FUCK STUDYING ITS NEVER GONNA GOSH DARN HAPPEN!!” you swore frustrated at this point but then immediately softened as you saw one of the closest friends you had here burst down in tears. You immediately ran to her side and engulfed her into a hug which she returned sobbing all the way.
“Mal, Mal! Girl are you ok?! What’s wrong? What happened!?!” You asked bombarding her with multiple questions.
“I don’t belong here” she sobbed. “I just wish I could go back to the isle, I can’t be the perfect princess they want me to be...”
you knew you shouldn’t have said it but you were desperate to make your friend happy. You’d do anything to see her smile... even if it meant it could hurt Ben in the process...
“I can take you there... follow me”
~~~~~~~~~~~
And now you were here, at the edge of Auradon overlooking the sea and the isle of the lost sitting on it.
“How are we supposed to get there? This is stupid Y/N.... you don’t have any transportation at all, any magic, nothing! We’re just standing here on the sand and it’s itchy and cold!!! Why did I ever agree to this....” Mal ranted upset and over the whole situation already.
“You’re right I don’t have a vehicle, I don’t have magic, or pixie dust, or a mermaid tail or nothing. I’m an ordinary person. But I do have one thing. I have an old friend...” you stated, satisfied with your answer and began walking towards the water. Mal rolled her eyes thinking you had completely lost it, waiting for your feet to hit the water when suddenly they didn’t and you were walking further and further out and the water around you was retracting more and more.
“Woah....” she gasped amazed at what was happening to her friend.
“Hey... long time no see huh?” You said meekly at the walls of water surrounding you. A mass of water rose higher above you, getting close enough to where you could feel drops on your face, and it nodded.
“Ocean... I know I haven’t spoken to you in a while and I miss the island and you and Tefiti and Mom and Maui and...” you stopped, realizing you were ranting and paused for a bit before continuing. “I need you to help me and a friend cross. We need to get to the isle. I know you might feel forgotten for all the years I never spoke to you but I really need this old friend... I always thought about you and really have wanted to talk! I just haven’t had so much time but I love you and I need this... I promise... once it’s all over I’ll come back and we can play hide and seek like the good old days haha...” you finished with teary eyes and a hopeful smile.
Mal watched in amusement at the sentimental scene playing before her. The mass of water inched closer to you and sucked up your
H/C locks into a swirl of water as if to playfully tease you. You giggled and took that as a “yes” and an “I forgive you” urging Mal to edge near so you both could cross.
After introducing the two you had made it closer to the isle and one more step closer to Mal’s happiness. What you didn’t know however was it was also one step closer to revealing who you truly were.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
As you were wandering on the shore of the Isle with Mal you began to discuss more of a plan to everything. After bidding farewell to the ocean you both would go to dizzy tremaine’s salon and give Mal a new doo and you some new “blending in” clothes. It was really the only way to not stand out in the giant crowd of thieves and beggars.
When you had finally arrived at the place Mal shared a long over due reunion with the little girl and introduced you to her. She was quite kind to you despite it being the isle and gave you a bunch of leather outfits covered in spikes to make you fit in more. To add a finishing touch she let your hair down, letting some natural curls fall all around you. You thanked her thousands and told Mal you were going to go out and explore to which she warned you to be careful and then let you leave.
~~~~~~~~~
Among many annoying sketchy shops you came across while wandering the isle you found something that drew you to it. A voodoo shop. One that could tell things about you that you didn’t even know.
You couldn’t understand why but next thing you knew you were walking inside the green door to the very sketchy shop. As you looked around you saw a very young girl who looked about dizzys age. Once she saw you a smile spread to her face.
“Hello miss! Step right up! Have a seat! I can tell you things you’ve needed to know your whole life” she said with a gleam in her eye. And so you did. You sat in the seat at the red clothed table and watched her intently.
“Pick a card any card!” She exclaimed. “You can’t see the card but I will. I’ll read whatever facts are on the card about your life.” You knew there was no way any of this could be true but you just simply nodded and picked a random card anyway.
“Well miss lets see... Definitely not a princess but definitely not a VK either so more in the middle. Daughter of a Chieftess I’m guessing huh?” She asked. You nodded again.
“Well” she continued, “you like the water and the ocean is a friend of yours. You are really close friends with a certain group of VKs and a certain King may I add. and.... woah! What do we have here! Some family history and drama!”
“W-what? What is it?” You began more curious and curious to know what could possibly be wrong with your family.
“Honey have you ever asked about your father?”
“N-no” you responded. You had always wondered about that. Your mother never seemed like the type to settle down or fall for a guy but yet you were still here somehow.
“Honey I hate to break it to you,” she started. “But your mother isn’t your mother. Your real mother had you and couldn’t keep you and so she tossed you in a basket into the sea. The ocean washed you up on the shore of the island of your mother and that’s where your mother adopted and raised you.”
“W-what!?? But then... who are my real parents! What happened what....” you couldn’t think straight, your mind was a mess of thoughts.
“You’re mother was a kind soul. A Native American named tiger lily born and raised on Neverland. She was a daughter of a great chief as well and fell greatly in love with a man. Eventually this man broke her heart and left her for another girl leaving your mother devastated. When he finally wanted to have some fun again he... I’m so sorry.... he raped your mother and created you... Tiger lily in fear that he would find you and hurt you sent you away to where the ocean saved you.”
You could not breathe! Everything was getting tighter but you just had to know one more thing.
“Who... who was the man?”
“They call him.... Peter Pan.” And with that you were out. You slammed some money on the counter and ran, running as far as you could away from everything. Tears began to spill down your cheeks, the world feeling all too small. You despised your father.. how could he? And how could your mother never tell you? What was happening?!??
You were so focused on every new thought swimming in your head you didn’t notice someone was walking in front of you and you crashed right into them.

Into The Deep
The first chapter of a very short story about a sailor girl being saved and falling in love with a mermaid-selkie hybrid (partially edited for now)
It took three months on a boat for Piper to decide that she hated sailing.
She was draped across the battered sofa in her cabin, socked feet dangling over the top as her head lay on a pillow on the floor. Her ginger hair was quickly coming loose from the low braid she had pulled it into at the beginning of the day, stray curls tickling her nose and neck.
Outside she could hear the rain hammering against the wood, and prayed to all the gods she knew there wouldn’t be a leak. Who knows when they’d be able to fix it, the storm seemed to be neverending.
She squinted at the words she had previously been attempting to read, holding the book in the air in one hand, and adjusting her glasses with the other. The words once clear, were now blurry and beginning to fade into the darkness of the cabin. The lanterns never did last as long as she wanted, she mused. Perhaps this was a sign that she ought to rest her aching eye; she had been reading for a while. But what else was there to do on a stinking on ship miles away from any port during a thunderstorm?
She reluctantly put the book down, though did not move from her position. Her limbs now felt as heavy as the anchor of the ship, holding her down to the floor. Her bed seemed a mile away, and so she gave in and accepted the chair as her resting place tonight.
As she closed her eyes, the noise got louder and more intense. She could hear the thundering rain, the crashing waves and the howling wind, though muffled thanks to the thick wood. She could hear the loud obnoxious cheers and songs of the men above her, as they drunk and wailed out old sailor songs that sounded crude upon their jagged tongues. It pierced through the floor and the door, pricking at her skin like an unturned nail.
Her brother, she decided, was dead. As soon as they got to port, she was chucking him overboard, stealing his lovely new boots, and never coming back to that blasted ship.
She could have been doing anything right now. She could be dancing with the ladies in Mr Roy’s grand garden, playing pretend and having tea parties with the children, and sharing stories of Daniel failed love affairs with his new wife, but no.
Here she was. Cold, uncomfortable and unable to sleep.
There was a knock on her door.
“Come in,” she said.
Speak of the devil, and he comes a-calling. Piper clicked her tongue as her brother stumbled in, his freckled face flushed and his dark eyes glassy.
“Piper! Why'yr not drinking wivus?”
“You said I’m not allowed.”
He frowned.
“Did I?” Daniel asked.
“I don’t know why you’re surprised. It’s a miracle I’m allowed to breathe.”
“Courseya hafta breaf. Die otherwise.”
Piper rolled her eyes and forced herself up onto her feet.
She didn’t like looking at Daniel. It was like looking into a slightly smudged mirror. They had the same deathly pale complexion, the same splatter of freckles, the same dark eyes. The same oval face, the same long, skinny, bony limbs.
Her mother had been so happy to have identical twins. Luckily, she had been even more excited to learn she had a girl. But it still left a burn in the bottom of her gut like a shot of whiskey whenever she looked too long at her brother.
It had gotten better over time, as they received different scars and bruises, but still.
“Wha' da want?” Piper asked.
Daniel burped.
“Cap'n wans ya. Upper deck. New log.”
“Alright, I’ll go. Now leave, the men’ll be missing you.”
"Won' youse sing me a song before you go?"
Piper pursed her lips.
"I'm not your music box. Go ask one of 'em to serenade you. Now shift."
Daniel didn’t put up a fight and swayed off into the darkness outside of her door. This was not worth any amount of gold or ‘experience’. Cock and bullshit, that's what it was.
She put on her boots, grabbed her lantern and began the trek outside her door to find the captain. Honestly, what kind of a captain couldn’t read or write? And if he couldn't, why go through the fuss of hiring someone specifically to write his logs? What was he even going to ask her to write? They had done nothing worth noting.
Piper shook her head and walked slow. She flinched with every creak of the floor or the walls and kept her eyes trained ahead.
In the corner of her eyes, she watched the light dance over the walls. It looked like a mischevious nymph, stretching out shadows and playing with them like toys. It made her fingertips throb and she dug them into the think skin of her palm as if that would make it stop.
Under all the chatter, she could hear another noise. A strange, low groaning that seeped up through the floor from beneath the ship.
Piper walked faster.
A whale, she reasoned, it's probably just a whale.
As she came closer to the stairs, she saw a figure, facing away from her. She breathed a sigh of relief.
"Captain Boyce, you wanted to see me?"
The Captain did not speak and began to walk up the stairs.
Piper frowned and pushed her glasses up her long nose. Had she got the wrong person? No, it couldn't be. No one else on the ship had blonde hair, nor clothes that expensive. And in this weather, it was impossible for someone to have snuck on.
Drunk, he was probably drunk.
She held her lantern tighter and began to climb after him.
"Captain! I hope you had a good reason to interrupt my reading."
But again, he did not respond. He just kept walking up and up, towards the door that lead to the deck. Christ, he'd get himself killed if he went out!
"Boyce, stop! It's not safe out there!"
She began running after him, eyes wide and heart slamming against her ribcage like salmon trying to escape from a net. But he faster, and soon had his hand on the doorknob.
"Captain!"
She pushed off the last step, hand reaching out to grab his coat...and fell onto her knees. The Captain was gone, the door still closed. How... what had happened?
But then, the door opened.
The wind and the rain hit her face hard, a shower of silver bullets, and she gasped. The air was so cold it froze her throat, and the world around her blurred as her glasses were drenched.
And yet, just in the distance, at the forecastle deck, she could see him. Captain Boyce. Leaning close to the bowsprit.
Was this a mirage? A hallucination? Surely she hadn't been at sea that long.
His hat was ripped off by the wind, and his golden curls stuck wet to his face. It seemed real. Very real. It had to be real.
Piper sucked in a breathe and forced herself up onto her feet, limbs shaking already. Slowly, she began making her way to the other side of the boat.
She yelled his name, the cold air scratching at her throat until it was raw, but he never responded. She slipped and slid, clothes ripping and skin patchy and red. Every inch of her begged to turn around, but she moved on. Her skin tingled and burnt ice cold, her fingertips turning numb.
Piper was close now, just the small staircase to face and she'd be on the same deck as him. She tried to spit out the curls that had crawled in-between her lips, but in her mouth, they stubbornly stayed.
Then, the boat jerked to the side, flinging her onto her hands and knees. She hissed, taking a moment to process the flaming pain on her palms. As she did so, she hard that same moaning, but louder now.
She crawled up the stairs like a dog, only standing upright once she had reached the top.
"Captain!"
And this time, he responded. He turned his head ever so slightly, looking at her from the corner of his eye. But then he went back to facing the sea.
Clumsily, she ran towards him, breathing so fast it hurt her lungs. But she'd made it, it would be fine now, she'd grab him, drag him back in and-
He vanished.
Piper stared at the air where he used to be, stumbling over to the bowsprit. She placed her hands on the soaking wood as if that would bring him back.
Shit. Shit, shit, shit. She'd been tricked. By her own mind or something else, she wasn't sure. But either way, she was here and had to go, fast.
She paused, however, when she heard the noise once more.
Piper pulled off her glasses and squinted into the swirling depths. She could just about see a shadow, long and straight, and bigger than any creature she had ever seen.
She couldn't breathe.
And then something struck the keel.
The back of the boat was pushed above the waves, and Percy was flung against the bowsprit, struck hard in the back. She let out a cry and scrambled to find something to hold onto as the keel fell back into the water.
She heard footsteps, and could just about see a small glow coming from the door entrance.
"Polaris!" Her brother cried.
Immediately after, the creature struck the middle of the boat, and it began to break in two. Piper was flung up and fell back down hard.
Her skull rattled as her head hit the wood, and for her, the world went black.
The men tried to cross the shattering desk, but the creature struck again, and the boat was split in two. It began to sink, the shadow circling the wreckage. The men cried and screamed, dirty fingernails digging into soft wood, trying desperately to stay afloat.
But Piper stayed still, laid on her side as she began to sink down.
Her brother yelled for her, but she did not respond. He tried to swim, but hands grabbed him and held him down.
"My sister, I have to-"
A hand clamped over his mouth and he was silenced. Though he struggled against his captor, he couldn't escape.
"Stop'i, you're gonna get yourself killed! You can' make it to 'er with tha' thing below!"
Daniel glared at the hands holding him back before looking back towards his sister. He was just in time to see a hand as dark and grey as the swirling sea around it, reach out towards her. It latched onto Piper's slim waist and pulled her towards the depths.
And then, Piper was gone.
#ahhhh#i've never really written an actiony scene before so i have no idea what im doing#luckily this should be the only one like it

Shimmering Memories
Request: @kimminseok-love Hey boo! Can I pleeeease possibly get a Minseok mermaid au type thing?
A/N: This got really long. Oops? Partially inspired by Legend of the Blue Sea and Splash!
Genre: Mermaid!AU
Pairing: Minseok x Reader
**
You’d always loved the ocean. The smell of the salt water and the sound of the waves crashing against the sandy beach never failed to relax you. Whenever you were free, you would come to the pier and sit down on the faded wooden planks, leaning your arms on the horizontal barrier that kept visitors from falling in. You’d stay there for hours just watching the water shimmer in the sunlight.
But you never went in.
Ever since you could remember, you’d been scared to go near the water. You could never explain it. You’d never had a near drowning experience or knew someone who did or had any other reason to be fearful of the seemingly endless body of water. It was simply an irrational fear that kept you at arm’s length away.
Your friends constantly tried to get you to go out on the boats when they wanted to spend a day out on the waves and under the warming sun, but you always made up an excuse to not have to go. They knew of your phobia, but they insisted all it would take was a few trips out on the open water and you’d be cured. Not to mention finally partake in all the fun you were missing out on.
With a heavy sigh, you traced nonsensical patterns into the wooden beam that you rested your chin on. If only you could get over this fear, then maybe you could actually feel the water between your toes instead of just imagining the cool liquid against your skin. Would you be any good at swimming? Was it as freeing and light as everyone made it seem?
The boards gave off a squeak behind you, but you didn’t bother to turn around. Your best friend Ari sat down beside you, sighing but not giving you any sort of greeting, knowing exactly where to find you.
The two of you had known each other since your very first day of school when you were only five years old. Being so young at the time, you couldn’t remember exactly how the two of you became friends, just that one day you were joined at the hip and never let go. She was your strength and support, the one who believed in you when no one else did. But she also felt the need to push you when she felt it necessary, a trait you could only appreciate part of the time.
“You’re coming out with us tomorrow,” she stated. The authority in her voice declared that no argument would be accepted.
You shook your head, keeping your eyes out on the horizon. “No, I’m not. You know I’m not.” Even if a twinge of feeling left out was pulling at your heart, you couldn’t make yourself join them.
Ari let out an annoyed sigh. “I don’t get you. You say you love the ocean, but you refuse to go near it. Do you not see how strange that is? I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that you woke up one day and decided you were afraid of water.”
“I did not,” you snapped as you whirled your head to look at her.
“Yes, you did!” Ari scoffed. She turned to face you fully, bring her legs up and crossing them in front of her. “When we were sixteen, remember? All of a sudden, you were terrified of the water. And you’ve never been able to explain to me why.”
“Why does it matter?” you whined. “Why does there have to be a reason? I’m afraid of the water. End of story.”
You hated the fact that it was true. There was no hard and fast reason for your fear and it drove you insane. You’d racked your brain over and over again, trying to fight against the irrational panic that came over you if you ever got to close. There were times you found yourself crying over it. It was like a piece of you was missing and being able to go into the water would somehow fill you up. But you could never do it.
Frustrated, you got up to your feet and walked away from the pier and your best friend.
“I’ll be at your place around ten tomorrow!” Ari yelled at your back. You just kept walking, refusing to acknowledge her.
Why did she have to be so insistent about this? Why was she pushing this out of nowhere? Even if you wanted to be rid of this weight on your shoulders that didn’t give her the right to be so pushy about it.
As soon as you arrived at your apartment, you flopped down on the couch, trying to figure out the best way possible to hide from Ari as you stared up at the ceiling. Playing hide and seek probably wasn’t the best idea. Ari always beat you, finding you quicker than you could count to twenty.
Sighing, you closed your eyes and just let yourself dream of a time where you might not be so afraid.
**
Two mistakes led you to your current predicament. The first one was oversleeping. You’d stayed up too late watching the latest season of your favorite show. By the time ten o’clock had rolled around, you were still out cold and completely defenseless when Ari arrived.
And that lead into your second mistake. Giving her a spare key to your place had seemed like a smart move when you first moved in here. In case you ever locked yourself out or had an emergency and she was closer to your place, she had a way in. But right now, you hated your past self for thinking of safety over practicality.
Thanks to those two coinciding events, you woke up to a swimsuit being thrown on your face.
“Ow!” Sitting up, you rubbed your nose that had received most of the hit.
“Oh, good,” Ari smiled in a sweet, but fake way. “You’re awake. Come on. Get dressed. Chanyeol and Jongdae are waiting for us.”
“I’m not going!” you insisted. For extra emphasis, you buried yourself under your comforter. Ari pulled it off of you with great effort, ripping the blanket from your fingers.
Your so-called best friend stood over you, her hands on her hips. “I’ll make you a deal. I have a coin here. Heads you get to stay, tails you go. Got it?”
Narrowing your eyes at her, you thought it over in your head. If you took the deal, there was a fifty-fifty chance that you would be home free. And an equal chance of being forced to go out on Chanyeol’s boat. If you didn’t do this, Ari would find some other way to get you out of there or never let you live it down, just coming up with new ways to try and get you to go.
“Fine,” you grumbled, giving in.
Smirking at her victory, Ari flipped the coin in the air and then caught it, slamming onto the back of her other hand. In almost slow motion, she removed her hand to reveal your fate.
And so, there you were, standing on the dock, mumbling to yourself about how you lost to a stupid coin. Chanyeol was putting the finish touches on his pristine boat before you would go out onto the water. Even still planted firmly on the solid dock, you could feel the panic attack bubbling up inside.
“You really up for this?” Jongdae teased as he tossed the rope that held the boat in place to Chanyeol.
“Stop it, Dae,” Ari snapped. Her boyfriend suddenly clamped his jaw shut. She was the only person in the whole world who could get Kim Jongdae to shut up. And in this moment you couldn’t be more grateful.
“Okay, we’re good to go!” Chanyeol yelled. His cheerful demeanor was easing your anxiety by a hair’s width. You knew that he was an expert at navigating the waters, having been boating since he was just a kid, but that only helped you inside the boat.
Without hesitating, both Jongdae and Ari jumped onto the deck, absent of any cares. You, however, stayed firmly on the dock.
“Come on, (y/n),” Ari urged. “Just get on.”
Chanyeol stepped off so one foot was on the deck and the other still on the rocky boat, perfectly keeping his balance as he held is hand out to you. “Don’t worry, (y/n),” he coaxed in a very calm voice. “I’ve got you.”
Taking a deep breath, you gave in, grabbing a hold of his hand with yours and allowing him to help you onto the rickety boat. You ignored the built in seats and sat on the thinly carpeted floor, where you felt safest. Jongdae snickered at you while Chanyeol gave a look of concern in your direction before turning to the wheel. At the sound of the engine starting, you squeezed your eyes shut.
Ari sat down on the floor next to you, throwing an arm around your shoulders.
“You’re doing good,” she encouraged. Peeking through your eyelids, you glared at her. Apparently, instead of looking intimidating, she found your stink eye cute, confirmed by the way she patted your head and bit back a laugh. “Okay, now try not sitting on the floor.”
You let out a high pitched whine as she pulled you up on your feet. Chanyeol was bringing the boat well out into the open water for the group to get started on skiing. The waves created by the other boats zooming past rocked the already unstable floor under you. Clinging to Ari’s arm, you struggled to sit down on the bench, which was freshly covered in droplets, making it slippery from the splash of the ocean.
Far out from the safety of land, Chanyeol brought the boat to a stop.
“Jongdae, you wanted to go first, right?” Chanyeol yelled over the roar of the engine.
“Yes, sir!” Jongdae jumped to his feet and started strapping on a life vest.
Right. You should put one of those on.
Standing up, you searched around for another spare life vest. A particularly strong wave rocked the boat just as Chanyeol was getting one of the wakeboards down from the overhead rack. The force was enough to throw off Chanyeol’s footing, knocking the fiberglass-coated board into the back of your head. You went right over the edge of the boat and into the water that you feared.
The hit to your head hadn’t quite knocked you unconscious, but you couldn’t get your muscles to move, to push you back up to the surface where you could breathe again. Instead, you just floated in the clear water, eyes half open and unmoving.
Perhaps the reason you were afraid of the ocean was because it was always meant to be your death. Maybe this was just how you died and your body was somehow always conscious of it.
The lack of air to your brain was starting to kick in some sort of hallucination. Or maybe it was the salt water stinging at your eyes. Just as you felt your consciousness fading, someone - a handsome man with black and blue hair - swam through the water, settling in front of you. He floating there, tilting his head back and forth before a smile broke out in his face. It was the kind of wide smile that showed off his gums in the most adorable way. He took your face in his hands, his thumbs caressing your cheeks. Then he let go, adjusting his hands so they settled on your waist and pushed you up.
Through his simple action you were headed to the surface. And then, while he watched you ascend in the water, you spotted something unusual about the boy.
Right where there should have been a pair of human legs was instead a blue fishtail.
A mermaid?
Too soon, he swam away at hyperspeed and a different pair of arms wrapped around your waist. Your head broke to the air and your lungs gasped for a large breath while also pushing out a good amount of water.
“Don’t worry, (y/n),” Chanyeol grunted in your ear. “I’ve got you.”
You continued to cough with each attempt to fill your lungs as Ari helped you back into the boat.
“Oh, my god, are you okay?” She was crying as she pulled you in for a bone crushing hug.
“(y/n),” Chanyeol huffed once he, too, was back in the safety of the boat. “I am so sorry! That was completely my fault. I never meant to-”
“It’s okay, Chanyeol.” You tried to sound sincere, because you were. But even with everyone around you scrambling to make sure you would survive, your mind was back in the water, to that mysterious mermaid - er, merman. A thing like that couldn’t actually exist. Could it?
“Okay,” Ari sighed, loosening her vice on you just enough to sit back a bit. “You win. No more boat rides.”
**
The sand was soft between your toes as you walked along the deserted beach. You weren’t entirely sure what you were searching for. It couldn’t have been the person you saw when you were in the water. He probably wouldn’t be able to get this close to the shore. He probably didn’t actually exist. Just something your mind came up with from being oxygen deprived.
On the quick ride back to shore after your tumble, you wanted to tell Ari about what you saw in the water, but you couldn’t find the words. She would have just called you crazy anyway. And who know? Maybe you were.
It’d been a week since that incident. You still hadn’t told anyone, but Ari had also dropped the whole “get over your fear of water” thing, allowing you to stay peacefully on the shore, making it not all that bad. Chanyeol had also been around a few times to check on you. It was sweet of him, but you weren’t entire sure of how you felt about his kindness.
Ari was always trying to set the two of you up, thinking the idea of double dates with the best friends would be cute. But you just weren’t as sure. There was always something stopping you when it came to dating, ever since you were a teenager. Sure, you’d been on a few dates, but you were never able to establish an actual relationship.
Oh, well. None of that mattered or lasted anyway. Nothing real.
Slowly, like in a trance, you inched closer to the water. A slight spike of fear still surged through you at the sight of the uncontrollable waves, but you were getting braver. Strange, as your incident probably should have reinforced it. But here you were, no longer stuck to the pier, instead braving the tide while your eyes searched absentmindedly. Maybe you really wanted to find some evidence that you hadn’t been hallucinating. That the merman was real. You really wanted him to be real.
And then, like a miracle more shocking than walking on water, you spotted him.
You had to blink a few times (and maybe even slap your cheek a bit) to make sure that your mind wasn’t tricking you again. But he was really there, maybe just twenty or so feet away. Except now he had two human legs rather than the singular blue scaly tail. His hair was still black with strips of matching blue. No longer naked, he wore a thin white sweater and a pair of light denim skinny jeans.
You walked up to him, approaching cautiously as to not frighten him. He looked confused, searching around the beach frantically as if he’d lost something precious. Until his eyes settled on you. Then, that same gummy smile stretched across his face and every muscle in his shoulders seemed to relax at once.
“Hi,” you greeted softly once you were close enough to him.
“Hi,” he said back with a slight bow of his head.
You couldn’t help the chuckle that left you. He still seemed so confused. “Are you lost?”
He shook his head. “Not anymore. I found you.”
“Me?” you giggled. “Why were you looking for me?”
Reaching out, he took your hand in his. “I’ve been looking for you for a long time.”
The smile slipped from your face. “Why?”
His smile, too, was gone, replaced by a deep frown. “It seems you still don’t remember.”
“Remember what?”
“It doesn’t matter,” he replied quickly, plastering on a very fake smile. “I’ve found you now.”
Keeping a hold of him as if he might disappear if you let go, you pointed out to the ocean with your free hand. “You’re from there, aren’t you?” He nodded without even thinking about it. You laughed, unable to fully believe what was in front of your eyes. “How are you real?”
He tilted his head to the side. “What do you mean?”
“You’re a….” You didn’t think saying the word out loud would be this difficult, but it refused to leave your lips. So you tried a different approach. “You saved me, didn’t you? Last week” He nodded. With that confirmation, you tried your initial question once more. “So, are you really… a mermaid? With a tail and everything?”
Again, he nodded.
You let out a short breath before staring up at him in awe. “How are you real?”
He frowned at your repeated question. “I just am. Same as you.”
“But now you have legs?” you pointed out.
His explanation for that phenomenon was a simple one. “As long as I stay dry, I can walk on land.”
“Okay.” You nearly patted yourself on the back with how well you were taking this. Your hallucination turned out to be real. How could you reject it now? But considering you were still conscious and taking this all in stride was still impressive. “What’s your name?”
“Minseok,” he replied proudly.
“Minseok.” You liked the way it sounded, the way it felt against your lips. A depressing thought crossed your mind, making you frown. “Are you going back there now?”
He shook his head, the smile now completely genuine. “Nope. I’m staying here. With you.”
Your eyes widened in shock. “W-with me?”
Minseok laughed. “Yes. That’s why I’m here.”
Before you could answer or ask another question, a gurgling sound hit the air and poor Minseok put his free hand over his stomach.
“Alright,” you tugged on his hand, urging him away from the water. “Let’s get you something to eat.” As you stopped to put your shoes back on, you noticed Minseok’s own feet were bare and no shoes were in sight. “Do you not have shoes?”
“No?” The answer came out more like a question.
You clicked your tongue, looking over his appearance. “So, then, where did you get the clothes?”
“I found them.”
You narrowed your eyes playfully. “You found them?” He nodded. You couldn’t help the snort. “Alright, then. Let’s get you some shoes first and then we’ll get something to eat. Okay?”
“Okay.”
It was undeniable how familiar this boy was. And he’d mentioned something about you not remembering something. It was beginning to feel like a mystery you wanted to unravel. After one rescue, he was so eager to attach himself to you. It didn’t make sense in your head and you wanted to know more about him and his cryptic replies. You didn’t want him disappearing on you before you could find those answers.
Shoving it all aside for now, you led him away from the beach, thankful that little shops lined the boardwalk for tourists and shoppers to enjoy along with the sun. The employees certainly gave the two of you odd looks as you searched around for a pair of shoes for the barefooted merman. You eventually settled on a pair of high tops that suited him just fine. After paying for the shoes, you waited outside as he slipped them on.
As soon as he was done, he slipped his hand back into yours.
“Afraid I’ll runaway?” you teased, even if the feeling was actually the other way around.
The look on his face seemed to convey exactly what you were feeling yourself. It seemed so familiar to you, the sad sheen in his eyes as he stared at you. But no matter how far you chased that feeling, it remained out of your reach.
To make the sorrowfulness go away, you gave him an encouraging smile and pulled him down a few shops over to a little seafood restaurant. The front entrance was open to give it that cabana feel. A hostess sat you down at a small, intimate table on the patio and handed you the menu before walking away.
“Order whatever you like,” you offered.
Minseok smiled brightly before scanning the menu in his hands.
“(y/n)?”
Oh, crap.
Ari, along with Jongdae, came strolling up to you, her jaw hanging slack and eyes as wide as saucers. Unsure of what else to do, you just waved weakly back.
“Who’s this?” she questioned without even a proper greeting or waiting for an introduction. It took a lot of will power to hold your tongue. Sometimes she could be a little too straight forward. A little too harsh.
“This is Minseok,” you introduced. “He’s a… friend. From work.”
“Oh.” She seemed almost relieved. What was that about? “It’s nice to meet you, Minseok. I’m Ari. This is Jongdae. We’re friends of (y/n).” Both of them shook Minseok’s hand.
“Ari, we should get going,” Jongdae reminded her quietly. “We’re supposed to be meeting up with Chanyeol.”
“Right, well, we’ll see you later.” She turned to Minseok. “It was nice to meet you.”
As soon as the two of of them were out of sight, you groaned, laying your head down on the table.
“Are you okay?” Minseok asked, concerned.
With your forehead still against the glossy wooden table, you nodded. Sighing, you straightened up. “She’s just going to hound me about you next time I see her.”
Minseok frowned. “Why?”
“Because I’m not usually the one to go out to eat with a boy, just the two of us,” you explained. “Specifically one that she’s never met before.”
“Ah,” he nodded in understanding.
Soon, the waitress came over and took your orders. You tried not to laugh at the strange sense of normality the situation. Who else could say that they’ve had lunch with a mermaid?
**
It’d been over two weeks since you found Minseok on that beach. Not willing to send him back to the ocean and there was no way you’d send him off by himself, so you’d let him stay with you, even though it was a bit awkward at times. Sure, you had to do a bit of shopping so he wasn’t constantly wearing the same sweater and jeans and have his own set of toiletries, but you didn’t mind. You did, however, go all the way to the other side of town just to make sure you didn’t accidentally run into Ari or anyone else you knew. You didn’t feel like answering too many questions about buying these things you obviously wouldn’t use yourself.
You felt guilty during the day when you had to leave for work. The poor thing was stuck in your apartment all day, just waiting for you to get home since letting him wander around aimlessly wouldn’t be a good idea.
Today had been a particularly grueling day at your job. You couldn’t necessarily say that you’d forgotten about Minseok - forgetting about the mermaid hiding out at your place was nearly impossible - but your brain was in automatic mode when you walked through the door. Usually, Minseok was sitting on the couch, watching TV and waiting patiently for you to arrive. But this time he was absent.
Heading for your bedroom, you quickly changed into shorts and a t-shirt before shuffling towards the bathroom. Without thinking, you opened the door-
“Oh, my god!” You covered your eyes quickly at the sight.
Minseok was lying in the bathtub filled with water, naked. Except his legs were gone again, his fishy tail back in full force.
He giggled at your embarrassment. “I’m sorry. I’m usually out before you get home. Must have lost track of time.”
Lowering your hands, you asked, “You do this every day?”
Minseok nodded. “I miss the water. I need to feel my tail every now and then.”
The smile on your face faltered. “Oh. Does that mean you’re needing to go back soon?”
“No, no!” Minseok readjusted his posture frantically, clinging to the side of the tub. “I want to stay here, with you!”
As much as that answer relieved you, you felt a bit guilty. Mermaids were meant to swim after all, but you never wanted him to go away. It felt… right, having him here with you.
Sensing your lowered mood, Minseok flicked the tips of his tail, sprinkling your face with water. That simple action made you giggle, gaining a gummy grin from the fish in your tub.
Knock, knock.
Still in a slight fit of laughter, you left the bathroom to go answer your front door.
“Chanyeol, hi!”
The tall man with firetruck red hair stood in your doorway. He was nicely dressed in a button down and jeans. As he was alone, you weren’t quite sure what he was doing here.
“Hi, (y/n),” he greeted with a shy smile. Scratching the back of his head, he said, “I’m sorry for stopping by unannounced, but I wanted to check up on you. Make sure you were doing alright. You haven’t been around lately.”
“Yeah, I’m doing great!” He was always such a sweetheart. You appreciated that. But right now, you kind of wanted him to go away before your secret was accidentally discovered. “Thank you! Sorry, life has just been a bit chaotic recently.”
“Can I come in?” he asked, the tips of his ears turning red. “Or, actually, can I… take you out to dinner? Maybe just the two of us? Without Ari and Jongdae, that is.”
“Oh.” You blinked a few times, trying to find a nice way to answer. “Um, well… you see-”
“(y/n)?”
Minseok joined you at the door in clear view of Chanyeol. You gasped when you realized that the only thing covering him was a towel around his waist. It was very obvious how Chanyeol was interpreting the scene in front of him.
“Oh, I’m sorry.” Chanyeol visibly deflated at the sight of your guest. “I didn’t realize- Um, have a nice day, (y/n).” He nodded at Minseok before turning and practically hightailing it out of there.
Closing the door, you turned to Minseok. You tried to look anywhere but at him, naked in your living room. He was… nice to look at. But you could feel your cheeks heating up and your heart beginning to race. Marching over to the personal pile of clothes you had for him, you grabbed a pair of pants and threw them at him.
“Will you put those on?” you laughed. “And maybe next time get dressed before coming to the door?”
“Sorry,” he mumbled shyly. And then started removing the towel to put on the pants.
You squealed, turning around to give him some privacy. A hand landed on your shoulder a minute later; a signal that it was safe to look again.
A harsh line had formed in the space between Minseok’s eyebrows.
You’d never seen such a sad look on his face before. “What is it?”
“Do you…,” he paused. “Do you like him?”
“Who?”
Minseok simply pointed to the door.
“Chanyeol?” you gasped. The thought pulled out a short laugh from you. “No, no, I don’t. He’s just a friend of Jongdae’s. Ari’s tried to set us up in the past, and he’s sweet, but no. I’ve never been interested.”
“And,” he cleared his throat, looking away from you, “is there anyone that you are interested in?”
“Um,” you scratched your temple, unsure of how to answer.
Because there was definitely someone you were interested in. The person standing in in your living room. You just weren’t sure if it was possible, if it could ever work; a human and a mermaid.
Spending the last week with this man in front of you has been quite the adventure. Whenever the two of you had gone out, it was never a dull moment. Minseok was fascinated by the little things around him, from the vending machines to the movie theater. His wonder was so childlike and whimsical that it never failed to make you smile. Sure, every once in a while you had to drag him away before he accidentally caused trouble, but you almost preferred it that way, keeping you on your toes like that.
Most of the time, you stayed in your apartment, teaching Minseok about the world on the surface; it’s technology, it’s history, anything you could think of. You loved cooking dinner for him and him loving every bite or seeing the light shining on his face once he understood something or solved a problem on his own.
Yes, the only person you were interested in was the merman currently living in your apartment. But, how exactly were you supposed to voice that?
You decided to go the roundabout way.
“No one out there,” you whispered.
Miraculously, he understood you loud and clear.
Slowly, as if to not scare you off, he lifted his hands up to your face, cupping your jaw gently in his palms. He crept closer inch by inch, his breath stroking your face with each release of air from his lungs. Then his lips met yours.
It was a soft, unsure kiss, giving you plenty of room to break away. But you pressed in closer, bringing your arms around his neck. His own hands moved down to your waist, holding you up against him. His lips molded perfectly against yours, moving in harmony. It was like being kissed by the ocean itself.
However, the blissful feeling only lasted for a few seconds.
Though your eyes were closed, images flashed through your mind like a projector.
You were sixteen, spending the summer on the other side of the country with your grandmother. A storm had just passed, a particularly bad one that left the shore devastated. You were on the beach, collecting debris and clearing it up to be used again with a group of local volunteers. Seeing something strange underneath the small, worn out pier, you broke off from the group to go investigate. What you found was impossible.
It was a merman, with black and blue hair and a shimmering tail like a fish. He was out cold, stranded thanks to the storm. Kneeling down, you placed your palm against his wet cheek. The contact woke him up, making both of you jump back in shock.
“I won’t hurt you,” you promised him. Eyes scanning his form, you couldn’t help but ask, “What are you?”
You found the answer to your question very quickly as he wasn’t shy about sharing with you. He even told you his name - Minseok. A friendship was quickly struck up, the two of you talking until someone came looking for you a few hours later. All too soon, Minseok disappeared back into the ocean.
He found you again when you came back the next day. For the rest of the summer, you would meet him in a hidden cove, away from others who might discover him. You spent every second you could with this boy that fascinated you so much. You even taught him about the beach he’d washed up on and how to read from the books you loved so much. It didn’t take long for feelings to build up and both of you easily confessed to each other, sealing your hearts together. But your days on that coastal town were numbered.
The days grew colder and shorter. Your last day spent in your grandmother’s house came all too soon. Minseok held you as you cried. You didn’t want to leave him. You wanted to spend the rest of your life with this amazing being beside you. So, you suggested the two of you run, leave this town behind. You asked him to take you away, anywhere in the world as long as you were with him. You’d seen him walk on land before, he could do it again.
But he told you no. He told you to forget about him, as it could never work between a human and a mermaid. You refused, angry and hurt. You never wanted to be without him. With tears streaming down your face, he kissed you. In what was supposed to be a sign of true love, he instead took away your memories of him and your love of the ocean from which he came.
Now those memories were back, crystal clear in your head like a calm, waveless sea.
You shoved Minseok away, too shocked to comprehend what had just happened.
“(y/n)?” He moved his hands up to rest on your elbows while his eyes searched your face. “Do you remember?”
Nodding, you looked up at him. “How could you?”
“I’m sorry,” he sighed. “I did what I thought was best for you at the time.”
“What you thought was best?” you yelled. Shoving at his chest again, you tried to bite back the tears that were pooling in your eyes. “I wanted to stay with you! I wanted it to be us against the world! But you took that away! You took yourself away from me! I couldn't remember you! Not only that, but you made me afraid of the water! You kept me away! How could you do that?”
“I couldn’t take you away from your family!” he shouted back. “Mine was already gone from me! I couldn’t let the same happen to you!”
“Get out!”
The words were out before you could stop them. But you didn’t want to see him. You didn’t want to look at him standing there in front of you and be reminded of the rejection he forced on you, of the life the two of you could have had together this entire time.
“I hate you.” Your voice was like acid in your throat, burning the sensitive tissue as the words came out.
Simply nodding, Minseok headed for the door. Before he stepped outside, he turned to you. “I love you, (y/n). I never stopped. That’s why I came looking for you. Finding you again was the greatest gift. Thank you for the time I got to share with you.”
He was gone before you could respond. As much as you tried to will your legs to go after him, they wouldn’t obey. Instead, you crumbled to the floor, barely held together. The sobs couldn’t be held back anymore and you cried into your knees.
It must have been an hour that you sat there on the floor. When the tears had all dried away, you simply stayed, unmoving. The apartment was too quiet now, too empty. It was caving in on you, suffocating and mocking at the fact that you were all alone.
In your anger, you hadn’t stopped to think about what you were doing. All those years ago, he’d pushed you away. But his intentions had been good. You were just a teenager, a family and a life beyond those shores. Now you were the one to reject him, to make him leave. And for a selfish reason at that. You were hurt, you were angry because he made the choice that you couldn’t. And now you might have lost him for good.
What had you done?
Jumping up to your feet, you ran out the door, not caring to lock anything up or even grab your purse in your hurry. Nothing else mattered except with how fast you could catch up to Minseok. You kept running until you reached the beach. The place was deserted again as the water was rough and the clouds above threatened rain. A storm was coming.
“Minseok!” you shouted, hoping that even under the water, he’d be able to hear you. “Minseok! Come back! Please! Minseok!”
Unable to see any other choice, you ran into the water. All your fear of the large ocean was gone. Your thoughts were simply on finding the man you loved.
You swam out as far as you could before your arms and legs began to fatigue. Floating there in the deep water where you could no longer see the bottom, you continued shouting for him.
“Minseok! Minseok!” You searched around for any sign of a tail or stock of blue hair. But the only movement was from the waves that were growing rougher by the second. Each time you opened your mouth you swallowed more and more sea water, coughing and finding it harder to breathe.
Not used to having to wade in the water for so long, you were losing stamina. Your legs gave out first so soon only your arms were keeping your head above the surface where the air was keeping you alive. Eventually, your legs, too, went slack, the muscles unable to keep going. You managed to kick your feet a few more times, but then the water overtook you.
It wasn’t any calmer underneath, the tide pushing and pulling you in all sorts of directions. You thrashed around, with your survival instincts kicking in as you tried desperately to get to the surface. Your veins screamed for oxygen. No longer able to keep your lips pressed together, your mouth opened and water rushed in, setting your lungs on fire.
Then, your world went black.
**
That first breath of air was like a cry of victory for your cells. The welcomed gas pushed the liquid out from its place. Someone sat you up, letting your lungs expand to their full capacity while you coughed up the rest of the water. Rain sprinkled your face, making you blink as you struggled to open your eyes and see how you could have possibly been rescued.
“(y/n)! Are you alright?”
You nearly started to cry again at the sight of the familiar face in front of you. Throwing your arms around his neck, you pulled him in, conveying the threat to never let him leave again.
“Don’t go,” you begged. “Please, don’t go. I’m sorry. I don’t hate you. I love you.”
When he pulled back, you nearly panicked. But then he pushed a strand of wet hair away from your face, giving you that gummy smile.
“I’m staying right here,” he promised. “Right where I belong.”
“So you believe we can make it?” you asked, full of hope. He’d said all those years ago there was no place for a human and a mermaid. But then he’d came back for you. Did that mean he saw a way?
He placed a soft kiss on your lips. “With you, I can believe in anything. Even a mermaid.”
You giggled at his statement before pulling him back in for a kiss. The future might be tough - nearly impossible, even - but you fully believed that everything would be okay. As long as you had Minseok, you had the world and it’s oceans in your hands.

~The Lupine Sojourner
Over the next few weeks, I came by the alcove every day and discovered through several instances of the merman flicking water at me or tugging me toward him or dunking me that he had a naturally playful, pranking nature.
He had a habit of pulling that shit whenever I was talking too long, or threatened to leave, or simply whenever he felt like it. I felt a genius stroke of luck when I thought to download a free phonetics app for my phone. It was supposed to help children learn how to sound out words and my friend seemed to like it a lot. I used it to help him and he soon learned how to say my nickname (Kara) and a few short, usually three-letter, words. As long it wasn’t complicated or long, he could actually say it after a while of struggling with it.
Almost every time I praised him for sounding a word out properly, he would turn his cheek to me, and if I were to hesitate or refuse, he’d rarely slam his salty cheek against my lips regardless if he was feeling particularly needy.
I’d always scold him and he would sit there, a smug, unrepentant look on his face as he watched me get flustered as I tell him he can’t keep forcing me to kiss him. I knew he didn’t understand the precise words I was using, but he wasn’t entirely dumb; he knew I was always upset when he did it.
A few times, I’d bring food in a waterproof container, like a Thermos. Mainly, I brought cheap sushi or boardwalk food.
Like today. My companion greedily sucked down the food I brought him and begged for more. I refused, careful not to let the water get all over the food when he flicks water at me petulantly.
This was getting a bit out of hand, honestly. I move away and motion for him to stay. “You let me eat.” I explain. “Then Kara back.” I started using smaller, simpler words when around this merman. He was only beginning to understand human speech and mannerisms, but he caught on pretty quick, all things considered.
I then look at my phone as I eat and notice that it was nearly four in the afternoon, and I’d promised my uncle I’d come visit today. I sigh heavily and swim toward the entrance, knowing the merman enough to dodge his grab at my ankle. He’s pouting, and I smile. “Me go, come back later.” He crosses his arms, looking away and sinking into the water like a child. I roll my eyes and laugh. “Bye.” I call. Instantly, the merman is in front of me, cheek turned to me. I sigh. It had become tradition that my departure is worthy of a kiss. So I give him one before waving as I swim away reluctantly.
=#=#=#=#=
“Why do you smell like the beach?” Uncle Yoshi asks. I shrug.
“I swam.” I reply vaguely, not noticing the dopey smile on my face. I hadn’t had time to shower and freshen up before visiting hours were over and my parents also wanted to visit him today.
“Oh? With anyone?” I blush.
“N-no.” I reply.
“Ah-ha! You deny it! It’s true!” Uncle Yoshi cackles, it soon dissolving into coughs. I sigh.
“Look, I- -”
“Who?” He presses once his coughing subsides. I shake my head. “C’mon, Mei.” He cooes. “Tell your uncle what’s going on.” He pleads. I bite my lip. ‘Oh, yeah. I’ve met and kinda befriended a merman, Uncle Yoshi. He’s cool, but kinda flirty. Oh, and I’m teaching him English so I can actually talk to him in proper sentences and have him understand.’ that would go over well.
“...I just swam with a friend.”
“Bullshit! You don’t blush and stammer about swimming with a ‘friend’, Mei.” He counters, smiling in victory. “So. Spill.” It was only two words, but I felt their weight settle on my shoulders. He had contracted cancer, so it wasn’t like he could run down the street yelling to the world that his niece had met and could sorta talk to a merman.
Also, he’s such a nice guy, he’d understand that it had to be a secret...right? I bite my lip. “It’s a long story…” I mumble.
“I have the time.”
“It has to remain secret, okay? I’m being serious, Uncle Yoshi. You’ll understand when I’m done.” My uncle raises a brow but nods.
“Alright. Whatever you say will not leave this room.” He always knew when I was being dead serious, like now. I swallow.
“Okay, so...about two weeks ago, I was walking down to the pier because I couldn’t sleep, and then I hear people on the pier messing around, so I look over and- -I’m being dead serious- -there were two mermen and a human woman all leaning or sitting on the pier. I didn’t believe it at first, but it’s real.” I pull up the video and picture of that night. “They left soon after this because a patrol showed up, and I came back after work the next day and eventually found the red-head merman again. I’ve been trying to help him learn English and introducing him to sushi and whatever else I can buy cheap on the boardwalk.” I explain, squirming as I waited for his reaction. Uncle Yoshi was silent a good minute or two, and it was an eternity before he spoke.
“You’re right to keep this a secret, Takara.” He murmurs, fiddling with a stray string on his blanket absently. “There are many dangerous things in the water.” I blink.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, I’ve seen my own merman. Not as young as the ones you’ve seen, but I saw one; it saved my life once.” I tilt my head. “It was a long time ago. Made a dive to explore a shipwreck; nothing I hadn’t done a bunch before. Only this time, as I was leaving, I cut my leg on a part of the ship. Tried to get up to the surface quickly, but I was too slow. A great white, one of the biggest ones I’ve ever seen, came charging right at me. Before I could blink, it had my leg in it’s mouth, yanking me this way and that. I tried everything recommended for this scenario, but it was so big, nothing I did had an effect. Then out comes this- -this blur. Knocked the shark right off me, pulled me behind it in a heartbeat. Turns out, it was a very muscular merman with a series of scars and the tail of a whale shark.” Listening to the story, I was stunned. My Uncle had never quite been the most open person, but if you asked him a direct question, he’d answer honestly. It did make sense that he’d never told me about this encounter before, but holy crap! There was someone else beside that woman on the pier that’s seen a mermaid? There were more than two mermen?! I shouldn’t be surprised, but still... “Of course, once he’d sent the shark on it’s way with a few punches, he helped me to the surface, vanishing the next instant. No one would ever believe me, I thought, so I never told anyone. I lied and said the techniques I used somehow worked and I managed to make the shark go away.” He sighs and next thing I know, he’s smacked my shoulder. “You, on the other hand, are an idiot! What if I hadn’t met that merman, huh?!” I wince, rubbing my shoulder.
“Look, you’re the one who pressed me into answering!” I protest defiantly, pouting a little at him.
“And you decided to answer honestly?!”
“Well, pardon me for being raised not to lie!” I shoot back. My uncle then chuckles.
“Good girl. Stand by your decisions, unless you’re proven wrong, no matter what.” I grin back at him.
“I know.” It was something of a family motto, one repeated frequently. Uncle Yoshi put his hand on mine.
“Tell me more about this merman.” I grin and continue.
“He’s actually kinda smart! I have a phonetics app on my phone and he’s hooked on it!” I laugh. “He’s like a little kid, really, the way he acts, but he means well. He’s also a bit of a prankster, dunking or splashing me sometimes or tugging on my feet. He likes to play with my toes sometimes, and my hand.” On and on I went, unheeding of my uncle’s knowing smile or the fact that my grin had turned positively dopey the longer I spoke.
“You really like this merman, don’t you?” My uncle interrupts. I flush.
“I...he’s kind of my friend at this point, you know? He’s come a long way from where he started and I like watching him improve, even if he wants a cheek kiss for every ‘accomplishment’.” I roll my eyes, remembering the salty taste of his cheek, the pride in the merman’s ruby eyes, the way his skin glistened when it wasn’t in the water...
Promptly banishing that thought, I notice Uncle Yoshi laughing.
“So, he’s a flirt, huh?” I nod, blushing a little.
“A bit. I’m teaching him not to be too pushy, though.”
“That’s...good.” My uncle replies, brow raised and amusement in his eyes and voice.
“Either way, I don’t plan on stopping the visits.” I muse, knowing my uncle would probably suggest it. He was a bit more cautious since his diagnosis, after all. He sighs.
“And I wouldn’t ask you to. Just...be cautious. If anyone else were to find out...I doubt it would end well.” I nod.
“I know.” The silence lingers.
“You’re an amazing woman, Takara.” I look at him, surprised. Not necessarily at the words, just at the sudden urge to say them.
“Okay.” I reply, unsure how else to handle that.
“I mean it. Some people would have turned the merman in if they’d found him. He’s lucky it was you.” I smile at the compliments and the thought of how lucky I was to be one of three known people to have seen a merman.
“And I feel lucky to have seen and befriended him.” Then, before the conversation could continue, my parents arrive. This was usually how it went; we got individual visits, so the older people could speak freely without the younger kids and young adults in the family being weighed down by the conversation. I stand and hug him. “It was so great to see you, Uncle Yoshi.” I farewell, kissing his cheek. My parents wait for me to finish farewelling him before fully entering the room.
“Keep me updated, okay?” It was a purposely vague question from my uncle. I nod. “I know transfer students can be a hassle, but you’ll manage.” I smile gratefully at the frankly great cover story.
“I know. I’ll be back hopefully by next week.” He nods.
“Sounds good. Love you!”
“Love you!” With that, I wave and walk out of the hospital, feeling better now I’d finally let out the secret to someone I could trust.
And to cap it off, my uncle had met a merman, too! How wild was that?!
Sleep was hard, but eventually, I succumbed.
=#=#=#=#=
The next week crawled by, the kids being respectful and hardly causing any fuss, for once. It seemed they finally understood that school was going to happen whether they liked it or not.
Soon enough, I could leave and grab food and a change of clothes for after the beach and then it was off to see the merman (Dear God, I need to help him tell me his name! I can’t keep calling him ‘the merman’ forever…).
As usual, he was waiting at the entrance, practically dragging me into the alcove in his excitement. “Kara back!” He squeals, nuzzling my cheek with his scaly one. I scoot him away gently.
“Kara back.” I repeat patiently.
“Play phone now!” I laugh. Of course he’d immediately want my phone. Despite needing to take a break to let his eyes rest after staring at a different kind of light then he was probably used to in the ocean depths, he took to the app as easily as he swam around.
Actually speaking the words was more of a challenge, but he took to the challenge with an admirable gusto and determination.
I pull up the app, laughing, and hand the phone to him as we settle into our usual spot in the shallower section of the alcove, where I didn’t have to tread water and he didn’t have to get completely out of the water, laying propped on his elbows, engrossed in the app, which currently was helping him pronounce ‘name’. I found that a bizarre coincidence, considering that I’d wanted to ask his name for a while, having to wait for him to know more English before I brought it up. “Hey.” He reluctantly tears his eyes away and looks at me. “What’s your name?” He blinks several times before doing a series of clicks, groans, and whistles that I couldn’t translate. I give him a pointed ‘that doesn’t answer my question’ look and his face screws up in thought. He pulls my phone back up to his face and taps on it. Under his breath, he was doing that weird groan/click/whistling thing I assume is the language of mermen, but as usual I didn’t have any clue what he was saying.
He knew the app pretty much inside out and there was a keyboard that would sound out the letter you pushed. He presses several keys and I have to ask him to do it a few more times before I understood. “...Kirishima?” I ask. He beams at me and nods so fast, I swear he has whiplash. Before I can react, he hugs me and we end up underwater. If not for the many many times we’d ended up swimming when we didn’t mean to, I’d have been shocked and a little mad, but this was kinda routine at this point. Kirishima (I am so happy I know his name now!) knows my limits roughly and lets me up a few moments later, arms still around me as we go back to where he’d dropped my phone in his excitement. I thanked the Lord every day that I had thought to buy that waterproof case.
Regardless, I fish it out and reopen the app. “Here, you play more.” I urge, and he goes back to work. Kirishima was happily tapping away for awhile while I sometimes had to offer a bit of help on a word or sound that gave him trouble. Eventually, I had to leave, and he gave me one last hug before reluctantly giving my phone back and letting me leave.
He had really had improved a lot since we’d started meeting up, and I felt proud of him. In a way, he was different than my students at the school.
They were born into the language and just needed help learning English. But with Kirishima, he was from a totally different world, with its own set of languages and rules and customs, and yet he wanted to learn English so we could communicate. He was always so happy to overcome the challenge of a new word or learning a new phrase. I wonder if cheek kisses were a common reward in mer-culture (if that’s the right word), or if he’d simply seen that blonde merman get one for winning the arm-wrestling, and wanted some for himself. Either way, he was pretty funny that way, and I didn’t mind as long as he didn’t push it.
I then shake my head. It probably wasn’t a good idea to be reading so much into Kirishima, but I couldn’t help it! Frankly, I didn’t get out much, so this was the biggest thing in my life right now.
Maybe that’s all this is...Yeah. That’s the only reason...right?
