RARITY: ★★★☆☆ | THREAT: ★★☆☆☆ SIZE: No larger than a house cat, though not easily seen. 

HABITAT:

Places of tragedy and mourning, such as funeral homes, hospitals, and graveyards. Sometimes they follow individuals home.

OVERVIEW:

Whisks are spectral, cat-like creatures that feed on peoples’ grief and sorrow. New emotion is most tempting for them, but they can even feed on old grief, so long as it weighs heavily on their victim. They tend to stalk around places of grieving or fresh tragedy in search of a meal. While they commonly feed in the wake of deaths, any intense sorrow will do. Most people can’t see whisks, but those they feed from are able to perceive them. They’re shadowy and feline, with fur and hackles that rise like smoke, and huge eyes, and they usually purr while feeding. Sometimes they do meow, but it always comes out as “ow”. Whisks would probably pass for cats to those uninitiated who don’t take such a close look.

While those fed on by a whisk feel lighter and full of relief initially, the very presence of the whisk nearby coaxes new and overwhelming sadness to eventually fill in, the whisk’s meal replenished. This is especially problematic because whisks are parasitic in nature, following their food source around for as long as they can, and will continue to feed. This can prevent natural emotional healing, thus prolonging the person’s sorrow. Victims may find themselves unable to move past their loss or trauma, trapped in an endless cycle that can last for years. 

ABILITIES:

Whisks can sense grief and emotional pain from considerable distances, which catches their interest and makes them approach.

Invisible to most people, except for the person they’re feeding on. Additionally, those who can see ghosts can see them.

They absorb negative emotions through their presence, providing temporary relief. Their purring may also be a comfort, even though it means they’re feeding.

Small, fast, and able to move through obstacles like other ghosts and spectral creatures.

WEAKNESSES:

Whisks are afraid of powerful, positive emotions and joy, and will flee from it and never return to feed on that person again.

True acceptance of one’s grief or source of sorrow will rid someone of their whisk. However, this is hard to achieve when being fed on by one, unable to escape for long.

Mediums and exorcists can help out with standard measures for keeping ghosts away, such as salt and iron barriers. 

They have trouble forming in direct sunlight. It doesn’t harm them, and they can feed in the shade, but whisks typically feed either at night or indoors.

Will fade away if unable to feed on grief for several weeks.

VARIANTS

FELFINE:

Unlike their sorrow-feeding cousins, the rarer felfines are drawn to people in the immediate aftermath of good news or relief. They look similar, though more shiny than smoky, and their eyes are red. When they feed, they slowly drain away feelings of resolution and relief, leaving their victims with lingering anxiety that their problems aren't truly solved. Their victims often find themselves unable to fully accept that their crisis has passed, waiting for the other shoe to drop, before more positive feelings emerge and the cycle repeats. While whisks trap people in their grief, felfines prevent people from ever fully feeling like they've escaped it. They're especially dangerous in that they can undo years of emotional healing in just a few feeding sessions, making them priority targets for mediums and exorcists who manage to identify them.
