See, none of them were exactly born as such. In fact? It’s technically a side effect of Lazarus waters and extreme ecto-contamination. Does this also mean selkie Al Ghuls? Yeah, technically. Though with how part of their mission includes protecting endangered species, they definitely use it to their advantage. 

Now, how did the batfam become so ecto-contaminated? Well how could they not? Lazarus pools in the Caves, corrupted artifacts, quite literally dying, dimension traveling and the many, many timeline shifts that seem to affect them specifically at times? 

Yeah, they’re all now… technically human in the fact that that’s the form they take. I mean, who doesn’t have a bit of eye-shine and fangs in Gotham? They just don’t really take seal form outside the manor because well, er, it’s a little embarrassing. Because their seal forms? 

Might be well, kind of tiny. So their friend might erm, not exactly know how much their respective bat is silently trusting them when they give them their coat to watch over.

1. For the ficfinder: In the last "In the mood for", no 8 reminded me of a fic but I cant recall the one. Wwx is travelling by himself, writing letters to LZ, he stays in a town and it ends up cursed. LZ and the juniors arrive to solve the case. Wwx is acting weird and hides his letters. The juniors read the letters and find out wwx is angry and full of resentment about how he's been treated. They find out the curse resonates from him. They talk it out to resolve matters. It was written really well. Any idea? @kesterling

2. Hi! This is for Fic Finder. All I remember is the ending, where Yu Ziyuan had her arms cut off, and that there was a part that mentioned that this was punishment enough as she would have to live her life with no pride. Also, she had an affair with Jin Guangshan, and Jiang Cheng was his child, and she had to become his concubine, I think. Hope someone knows which fic this is!

5. Hi, I'm wondering if anyone else remembers a fic similar to leading tone by silencemostofall, and pastel by antebunny, but that's set in the canon era while they're at Cloud Recesses? A few details I remember was that the coloured mark that indicated Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian's relationship started to fade, and that Jiang Cheng was allowed home to celebrate his birthday, while Wei Wuxian's was completely ignored by the Jiang Sect and so he spent it drinking and was caught by Lan Wangji. 6. There was this fic on ao3 I don't remember, much, but it had this part, where lwj refused to go near his child(/children??) Because when wwx was pregnant he slowly grew ill or I dunno I think there was some complications (?) and when it was finally the time of delivery, wwx fell into coma I think. A while back I found and lost 😥 a fic where WangXian, I think, were smuggling Wen Ning (and probably Wen Qing) across a border somewhere and they put a fake mustache on one of the two and people kept complimenting them on how nice it looked. I remember 18, though I can't find it either. The sickness/curse in question made people burn from the inside; it was contagious from breathing in the ashes of the people dying. There was a honestly touching scene with Wen Chao dying while Wen Ning kept him company. Wen Qing assassinated WRH because she was treating him for the illness, for which they'd finally found the cure, and he announced that he therefore would use it as a weapon against the other sects, by deliberately infecting them and holding the cure hostage. The only ones they'd allow to have the cure are the Lans, because they're the only ones who came to help. He also intended to marry WQ, as he'd lost both his sons and needed new ones. I think it might have been part of a series, with the first part showing how WangXian got together.

Why I think c!Dream is Autistic - Part 2

If you haven’t read part 1 (eventhough I did try and write these as like separate things) I do recommend you go do that...

Did you do it? Hi hello, welcome back. :) Okay, now having gone over general traits, let’s talk more about the second part of my original statement [post]: “c!Dream is autistic and the consequential misunderstanding and miscommunication is a root of all the problems and conflicts” which I have covered a bit already [here].

So, because we think differently, communication and social interaction is often at the heart of a lot of our struggles (after my diagnosis at 20 I realized just how many of the conflicts in my past came down to this). Me and my therapist like to make the comparison that because autistic people’s brains are structured differently it is as if we are speaking a different language and as a result it ends with things being misinterpreted. Because as we all can recognize, when a language isn’t someone’s first, there are times when things don’t come across properly. Both because of perhaps a lack of words, different slang, tone, culture… etc. When you don’t take translation into consideration, it leads to miscommunication and misunderstanding as a lot of poor assumptions are made and conflict is often the result, especially because our inclination is to think the worst of people. [funnily enough here’s a great example between some anons about translation and communication 1 -> 2 -> 3]

As such, while autistic people have issues communicating with neurotypicals, we often don’t have issues communicating with each other - we speak the same language. So, it isn’t that we are any worse at communication in general than everyone else (in other words Dream is not the sole one to blame here), it’s that we are struggle to communicate with the neurotypical like we are speaking two different languages without even realizing it, so of course we struggle to understand each other. 

I think (hopefully lol) we can all agree that the root of the dsmp conflict is miscommunication and not understanding each other. But the thing is, miscommunication in the standard sense, in our day to day life or in the climax of a romantic comedy is about the absence of communicating, like Quackity not talking to his fiances. It is to have information, an opinion, view or assumption that goes unsaid and then leads to struggle just because it was never talked out. However, in Dream’s case it isn’t that he doesn’t talk it out or not share his side of the story, because he does. He does a lot, he does communicate, how else could Dream apologists understand him even before the finale without his own pov detailing his thoughts. 

He does talk about it but his autistic mind is using logic and facts against an emotional response leading to him being unheard. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter whether tyrant is the right word, they are just expressing their feelings of being controlled by a larger power, but Dream is too focused on pulling out the literal definition and the facts to see the real issue at hand - that they feel controlled and overshadowed by him. So they think Dream doesn’t care, and Dream thinks their points don't matter because their facts were wrong and no understanding is reached. Dream can use logic all day - Why would someone not want to escape a prison they were being tortured in? Why would someone make a prison and then plan on putting someone in an unfortified 1x1 hole in the wall? How can I be the tyrant when Eret is literally the king? How can I steal the discs if they were literally given to me after a fair duel? - but against people just spewing words out of anger, hurt, feelings of abandonment it isn’t going to make a difference.

Perhaps one of the most notable and tragic examples of this is George’s dethronement, in the aftermath of Techno’s attack and the Spirit speech, where Dream meets Sapnap’s and George’s emotions with logic and facts.  (See [here] for full transcript, the following is trimmed down from two different vids)

[18:54] George: “Why—why do you think- why do you think I shouldn’t be king anymore?” Dream: “I think that… you would be safer if you were not, right?”

[23:56] Dream: “You’ll just be targeted if you’re the king, and you wanna be able to like, get revenge on Tommy and stuff, right? So, we can like work to—We can work together. Me and you.” George: “Hm. Sounds like you’re sugar-coating it.” Dream: “No, nono—I mean, it’s a little bit sugar-coated, but it’s also like… it’s just better because you don’t get attacked by everyone, and you can do whatever you want without having to worry...”

[25:37] Sapnap: “George, Dream said he didn’t care about anything on this SMP which… That just means he doesn’t care about us.” Dream: “Okay, I’ll have you say, I was—Okay, I wasn’t—I wasn’t—I didn’t actually mean I don’t care about anything.” George: “Why did you say it then?” Sapnap: “Yeah?” Dream: “Listen, listen! The reason I’m even saying George should step down as king is because I care about him. Because I—He’s been getting attacked, and I care about him, and I don’t want him to get attacked.”

[27:28] Dream: “What did you do as king? Like you didn’t do anything as king like decree or anything...” George: “I’ve been the best king this server has ever had!” Dream: “Yeah, I agree. I agree. But you’ve also been the least safe king because you just get attacked all the time because people don’t like me. And therefore, they don’t like you because you’re behind me, and you’re my friend.” Eret: “By association.” Dream: “Yeah. By association. So, like that’s the same reason, like, Sapnap’s got into some, you know, drama and stuff too, but…”—“Sap, stop pointing the damn bow at me.” George: “Just say—Just say you hate me.” Sapnap: “Yeah, just say it.” Dream: “George! *laughs in disbelief* George, I don’t—Listen to me. I care about you. That’s the reason I don’t want you to be the king.” Sapnap: “First—first—Listen to this. First, he says he doesn’t care about us, and now he’s demoting you as king.”

In this conversation over and over he reiterates how he cares and is trying to keep them safe from being targeted and attacked and yet after everything is said and done, his friends somehow leave that conversation thinking he doesn’t care about them. Why? Because what Sapnap really needed was validation for him feeling hurt, but instead Dream kept reasoning with his emotions with the concrete actions, details and facts, essentially saying that what he feels doesn’t matter because it’s not truth, which was never going to get through to them. They are listening but they aren’t hearing eachother, both think they have made their point and the other side has poor intentions for not reacting appropriately. 

It took Tommy to literally experience Dream’s point of view to understand him and realize his intentions weren’t inherently malicious. Because only then could he shatter his assumptions and misconceptions about intention and motivation. Only then did he know which questions to ask Dream for him to get Dream to answer in a way that made sense to him. Before Tommy experiences Dream’s pov in limbo and after, Dream’s arguments and his answers for why don’t really change, he talks about peace and family so many different times, but it’s only after Tommy goes into his head that he’s able to actually translate what Dream was saying so he can hear him, understand him, see him.

It’s the assumption that the way you understand someone is what they meant to say that causes these issues in communication. Me missing social queues or body language that’s sending me a message and you assuming I don’t care or have a certain opinion on the matter because of my response or lack of response when in fact, no I just did not get the message after all. And as such as an autistic person it often feels like neurotypicals expect us to read their minds because they are sending messages, communicating how they feel just not in a way, not in a language we understand.

So, why do they ask that for the snake and not for people? - because people don’t speak snake, but surely people do speak people, so they assumed they don’t need to ask because they assumed that they can follow the train of thought because it's just like theirs. They assumed they understood each other but it’s like an American and a Brit arguing about jumpers without realizing they are two completely different clothing items.

I could write a whole text book on Echo and Narcissus. They were BOTH wronged by the gods.

Narcissus was just ace. He didn’t have any attraction to not just Echo but ANYONE. And was sick of people trying to date him even after he made it clear he wasn’t into that at all.

Echos curse caused some major miscommunication between them, Narcissus snapped in frustration accidentally hurting Echo in the process which lead to HIS curse because the gods saw a Nymph (who are often very sacred to the gods as they’re usually offspring of more major gods) that’d been heartbroken by him.

Echo was wronged by being cursed for simply trusting the wrong god and getting caught up in the crossfire and subsequently getting very harshly and hurtfully rejected thanks to a big old misunderstanding.

Narcissus was wronged by being cursed for a misunderstanding and being ace.

They both met tragic deaths when the whole situation could have been avoided by 1) patience and communication and 2) the gods staying out of it. Even then, the gods were just trying to help in their own twisted way.

Quite frankly, pre curse, narcissus wasn’t even that bad of a guy. He was multi talented and did his own thing, didn’t want any romance in his life and got understandably annoyed by people trying to force it on him. Post curse, he did get a bit difficult, being so self obsessed. But was that even his fault? He didn’t ask to be cursed with falling in love with his own reflection. Tbh I wouldn’t even call him much of a narcissist, egoistical maybe, but a full blown narcissist? The condition literally named after him? I think he, just like actual people with NPD are majorly misunderstood.

And Echo? The poor girl is kind of like a parallel to people with echolalia and other verbal difficulties, they find it hard to communicate for reasons outside of their control and the people around them refuse to even try and understand them. She’s reasonably upset over the way she’s been treated, isolated herself because of it and ended up dead.

Echo and narcissus is both a majorly misunderstood story, but one about why effective communication is important to avoid tragic misunderstandings, the way the world forces romance on unwilling people, and good old fashioned abelism.

TLDR: free my girl Echo and my man Narcissus they did nothing wrong.

Edit: this is mainly me bitching about people misusing the term narcissist and using the story as an example. Yeah he’s egotistical, but definitely not a narcissist by modern standards.

Oh wow… I said I was going to try and post here more often and tell my theories but I completely forgot to… anyways, is it just me or am being delusional?

And I don’t know if I have talked about this on here before but does anyone notice how Weiss Nevermore summon is possibly greatly connected to Ruby and Weiss relationship?

Like… if you think about it for a moment and just analyze what the Nevermore possibly symbolize/represents (as a great deal of Weiss summons are allusions to something or share some sort of connection or mean something), you sort of just notice that Nevermore is practically directly linked to Ruby and Weiss relationship

(Which makes sense given that Weiss wasn’t really the one to have killed the Nevermore… it was Ruby who cut off its head)

And the way this Nevermore summon connects to Ruby and Weiss relationship symbolically is possibly through it representing Trust, belief, connection, understanding and Freedom (possibly)

(Which again, makes sense for the Freedom part due to how birds are symbolically used to represent freedom)

But the thing that made me think this and made me sort of notice this connection is when the Nevermore is first killed and the slow gradual attempts by Weiss at summoning the Nevermore until her first actual summoning against CC (also some stuff about what Winter said about summoning/the Schnee family semblance back in V3)

And the reasons these make me think of this… well, starting off with the Nevermore being killed

This part is rather simple since It’s the beginning piece of what creates and gives way for Weiss to be able to summon the Nevermore

In the beginning of the finale fight of the Emerald forest arc against both the Nevermore and the Scorpion (brain fart, forgot its name), both Ruby and Weiss sort of come to a small mutual understanding about each other and both chooses to accept and trust in the other

When Ruby comes up with a plan to kill the Nevermore, a plan that Weiss chooses to trust in and chooses to believe in Ruby (and Ruby chooses to trust in and believe in Weiss as well) being able to kill the Nevermore

And this belief in Ruby is quite easily proven true

Now moving on to the bit about Weiss attempts to summon the Nevermore till she truly does in the finale of V10

And before I fully go into depth on it, I would like to say some stuff about how during the atlas arc… Ruby and Weiss slowly got more and more distant from each other due to being too busy, having issues with some burdens, or possibly some miscommunication

And this is important because this is slightly reflected in Weiss first attempt to Summon the Nevermore in order to try and save Ruby… but yet she fails due to not being quick enough in summoning the Nevermore (and partially because of a Grimm attacking her before she could summon), because her connection and sort of understanding about Ruby has sort of… fades a bit due to distance

But this slightly changes come V9, after RWBY reunites

With how Weiss comes to learn and understand a bit about Ruby’s current emotional state and tries her best to help her a bit by trying to talk to her and get her to open up… but fails as Ruby doesn’t want to talk right now and chooses to focus on the task at hand

Something important to note is how Weiss not only understands that Ruby is hurting and something is bothering her… but Weiss also partially misunderstands when Ruby walks away when Weiss is trying to talk to her about Penny… that Ruby wants to be left alone for now and wants to get things handled first before she opens up

And Weiss (believing in that little misunderstanding since Ruby does want someone to support her or talk to her and help her) chooses to trust and believe that Ruby will talk to her and open up to her about what’s hurting her and will rely on her as well as coming to accept that Ruby needs some time

Leading to Weiss being able to almost fully summon the Nevermore but only being to summon the wings and use the wings

But not yet being able to manifest it yet

Until Ruby breaks and Weiss comes to understand and fully realize what was wrong with Ruby and what she needed most

Until the group arrives at Tree statue Ruby and Weiss comes to understand, trust and believe and accept that whoever or whatever comes out of that statue, will still be Ruby Rose

That whoever Ruby chooses to be and comes out as… Will always be Weiss’s partner, leader, and best friend to her

Which once Ruby comes back and once again… proves that belief true

Weiss is fully able to summon and conjure up the Nevermore to help in the fight against CC

But who knows… I could just be coming up with this is or looking a bit too deep… but what are all of you folks thoughts?

Also, I didn’t really get into the “Freedom” part about the whole Nevermore thing and might just make a part two to fully explore it

But to simplify it just to put it in here

The Nevermore represents Freedom because through Acceptance and Understanding, through trust and believing in one another

Ruby and Weiss manages to come together and learn to be free together

Free to choose who they want to become and who they wish to be

Free to follow their own path and define their own name

Free to find joy and love wherever it may be… to be free to find comfort and warmth in friends, family, and partner quite special

Just wanna say that I love your Wyrm headcanons. I feel like not many people explore the idea that the pale king is basically an alien compared to normal bugs.

I look forward to his interactions with the other bugs, specifically Herrah and Hornet, in the future.

I love the idea of the Pale King being more like an alien, god, eldritch horror kind of being. He is a so vastly different to mortal bugs that it would like comparing a blue whale to an mouse. Biologically, mentally, and behaviorally. Nothing is the same. Which means that miscommunication and misunderstandings are the norm. What he would consider to be polite, they could interpret as a upset or even homicidal. What he thinks is a perfect mirroring of mortals bugs, is seen as dead center of the uncanny valley levels of creepy, and down right horrifying when he still moves and acts like a wrym.

It was so bad, that in the beginning, he was not a good god. Not out of malice, he just didn’t know. For example:

The concept that mortals, beings a fraction of a fraction of his size, needed to eat multiple times in a day was just baffling to him. Famine and starvation was common until he understood that.

Normal wrym vocalizations that he did absentmindedly were terrifying to mortals. Many thinking it meant he was angry. Leading to some nasty ‘rituals’ the mortals come up with the try and appease the not actually angry god.

Even after he cast off his shell to better study the mortals without disrupting them, the problems were still present. Sure, the god king is now mortal size, but why doesn’t he emote? Gesture? Breath!?

But thanks to a select few mortals who were willing to speak up, he learned over the cycles how to be a better god king and less creepy. In fact, he goes out of his way to have as many of these individuals around him as he can. People who aren’t afraid to tell him he’s doing something wrong.

I want to make a post at some point with a more extensive list of some of the advice these Kings’ Keepers have given him over the cycles. From the ones at the start of it all telling him how to not kill his people, to the later ones explaining the concept of art.

And while he can always change his behaviors, he can’t change his physiology. Even gods are subject to the laws of biology. So he will always be as alien as the day he cast off his shell. He just got better at masking it.

And I’m so glad to hear you like the concept. As you said, its one that isn’t explored often. A god trying to act mortal, it’s a fun idea. And I am greatly looking forward to the reveal of the Pale King with his bindings off and full feral mode on.

Whats your headcanons for malleus and Female silver’s relationship? (platonic i mean but ship if you have any ideas too, lol) Would stuff change since silver is a girl?

I mentioned most of my headcanons for Silver here.

For the most part, not much would change for Malleus. However, the few things that would change would have a significant impact.

One is that Malleus would feel a bit more melancholy as, thanks to Silver’s developed body, he couldn’t ignore the fact she was growing up. Often, he would feel sad that Silver is growing up so fast and dreads the day she may leave him to get married.

Malleus worries about Silver more than he does about male Silver. Not because she’s weaker or lacks faith in her, but because girls tend to attract more unwanted attention than boys. He frequently frets that she may accidentally place herself in a dangerous situation due to her naivety. Therefore, he tries to watch over her from a distance.

Thirdly, Malleus would be careful to keep a professional distance from her in public so that gossip about them being a couple wouldn’t start.

This, mixed with Malleus’ somber attitude at times, often makes Silver feel that Malleus doesn’t care for her as he used to, which makes her lonely in his presence, as he used to dote on her. Of course, this is all just a misunderstanding, as Malleus still adores her as much as ever.

Due to the miscommunication, Silver second-guesses herself and even wonders if Malleus wants her as a guard or if he only allows her the role due to Lilia. This leads to her being a bit nervous around him.

Silver also used to deal with bullying from Malleus’ (and Lilia’s) fangirls in her first years due to their jealousy. Thankfully, Lilia quickly stopped that. (Don’t mess with his girl.) Malleus also gets animosity from Silver’s admirers (not that they’d do anything, as they’re not suicidal).

Aside from this, they’d be the same as Canon.

Some cute headcanons are:

*Malleus taught Silver to dance the waltz (and then Sebek when he got jealous) as Lilia was too spazztic.

**They recalled this memory as they danced together during the GM event.

*When Malleus first noted how "developed" Silver was, his eyes grew three times their size. He stared at her in shock (not lust) till Lilia knocked him out of it by “accidentally” kicking him in the shin. After that, Malleus had trouble understanding how Silver could go from a little girl to a woman in such a short time. (Remember, humans develop faster than fae.)

*Malleus used to let Silver braid his hair and such when it was long. She was a bit sad when Lilia cut it as she couldn’t style it anymore.

**Silver liked his long hair and let hers grow partly because it reminded her of it.

***Malleus will occasionally braid it for her.

*When Silver was alone for the first time, he came to check on her and put a barrier around the house so no one could get in. However, it worked too well, as Lilia couldn’t enter either when he returned from his trip.

*When Uterus demands his sacrifice for the month, Malleus will use healing magic to help her with the cramps.

I never thought of the two in a romance, so I don’t have any headcanons right now.

Teal Mask: Kieran’s desire for strength - not just becoming strong as a trainer but also as a resilient individual in general. *LONG THREAD WARNING*

Just wanted to contribute further to the teal mask content and all that juicy stuff. As we all know, we all have unfortunately witnessed a poor boy’s down-spiral character arc. It is evident that Kieran wants to attain strength to become a stronger trainer and person as a whole. He outright states that he wants to become independent, capable, and reliable at some point. His motivation and source of support - ogerpon -  more so the legend version of ogerpon than the “real” ogerpon, was once a common innocent fixation that many of us probably had/have in our lives, that was then tragically turned to an unhealthy obsession. It became a poor coping mechanism and desperate means of proving himself that pushed him towards reckless methods and mannerisms.  

Parallels with Loyal Three

I mentioned in the comment section of one post that his desire for power parallels with Okidogi. Additionally, he shares similar sentiments with Fez and Munki. He wants to be “cool” like the ogre (achieve a cool status that of a hero, admired for their strength) and seeks knowledge on the ways to succeed like us - he wants to know how to become stronger -  “why can’t I be like you?”. This is shown through his tactics, team member swaps and appearance change at the end. 

Foils with other characters

I find it sad how as Ogerpon learns to open up, heal and receives support, Kieran does not have a proper, stable one since the start - his sister has supported him in some ways of course, but her attitude/actions likely has also contributed to his sense of inferiority. Thus, the combination of misunderstanding, cultural norms, strained familial relationships, miscommunication, and self inflicted misjudgments have pushed him further down the hole. It’s almost as if he is the foil of Nemona (yet also alike) in terms of how strength as a social arbiter determines one’s worth and outlook. Nemona became so strong but at a social cost; no one wants to compete or keep up with her and misreads her passion (likewise with Kieran and his interest in history). She just wants someone to battle with with all of their efforts and enjoy the battle the same way she does, which she does not mind losing. On the other hand, if you’re weak then you would likely get made fun of or ignored, which we see Kieran has internalized that idea through his accusations of us and Carmine laughing behind his back (perhaps this is a common concept that runs in blueberry academy? Competition and becoming the best are of utmost importance). Moreover, he is, in a way, a foil of Arven in ascribing to a legend and superstition - except Arven learns to embrace support after being alone for so long, heals and accepts korai/Mirai, while Kiki feels further isolated, loses grasp of who Ogerpon really is by going against her boundaries and runs away from opportunities of support. As for Penny, it is clear that they share a reclusive nature and willingness to not conform to, but to confront social standards. Penny takes self accountability for her actions, whereas for Kieran, while he does apologize at times and keeps his word - soon gets lost in a convoluted, distorted sense of right and wrong (him stealing the teal mask, and him not wanting to join the mask retrieval mission may seem selfish at first, but it could be that he didn’t want to be a burden as well as be seen sulking). He unfortunately (would) becomes the antagonist or better yet, the oni in our path.

Peach Symbolism

On another hand, kieran may be the peach boy in a sense but reverse. His actions and desire fulfilled the required conditions for the resurrection of the loyal three (desire for “revenge”) and thus indirectly leads them to endanger Ogerpon.  In one of my previous posts, I wrote a poem about how Kieran's dreams were sweet like peach, but then got crushed. And like certain fruits, it has seeds that contains some poison but not at a dangerous level (unless consumed at high amount ofc), which ties to the toxic chain and dokutaro that has been theorized to be external influences partially responsible for his behaviour.

Hero + heroic values

Finally, that one part when he says you’re like the hero of the story (that line goes hard and breaks the fourth wall, it’s been mentioned a lot in visual works on pixiv and social discourses), is a dealbreaker of his wish to keep his new friendship. Despite the portrayal of him hating the player (through memes which I do laugh at, and artworks/ discussions which I agree while sad about it) I think he is mad at us for sure, but not spiteful. Or maybe slightly. I think above all, he is mad at himself;  he constantly faces inner turmoil  to overcoming his helplessness, insecurity, and the process of revising his dreams and outgrowing his old ones. He had to forfeit his one childhood dream and now recognizes that he has to change in some way (albeit a bit extreme). In an ironic way, he would likely become his idealized version of strength, like "his" ogerpon - a strong “oni”- aka champion of bb academy. But again, while physical strength is a quality emphasized many times, Kieran wants to grow mentally strong to endure losses and humiliations both as a trainer and individual (ex. he is told down by his sister as seen in the beginning). He wants to be appreciated and not looked down as someone who is meek, weak and cowardly, which he tries so hard to build himself up on the virtues of a hero. He values honesty and a fair fight and tries to fulfill them to "earn" respect from people + ogerpon as a trainer. And maybe, that is when he feels that he is equal on par with you, and that he can be considered good enough to be our friend.

I really feel a lot for Kieran, because I do see myself in him (not in an obsessive way though) - hated losing, shy, hyerpfixations… I see his good traits and flaws - he is curious, sensitive, empathetic, has a critical mind of mainstream narratives but is also insecure and stubborn. I see too much simplistic takes on them (Kieran is narcissistic victim, Carmen is abusive,etc), like I get some aspects of the ideas, but saying that in a deterministic way does not define the character at all…

Well, it's a bit obvious that the most devastating event in Albert's life was killing his biological family.

Due to how close he was to them (they were shitty, but they were his family after all), it left some mental scars, and that's why he tends to be very gentle and careful in relationships.

Although he likes some action in a relationship, like teasing and flirtation, he's too afraid to ever take full control.

So in his relationships, his goal is to be the calm and loving one, the "safe place", so to speak. His biggest fears, are losing the person he loves as he did his family.

That leads into his biggest insecurity, which is in fact, his lack of trust. He is able to trust people, but not entirely.

He always holds something back, or keeps a piece of himself hidden, because he fears he might lose that person one day.

He's able to hide it due to being great at hiding his true feelings, but after getting into a serious relationship, he tends to become very possessive, and the idea of losing a partner scares him.

He's also not the type to rush into a relationship, instead taking his time to find someone who understands him fully. When he does, he's usually too distant at first.

I think Colin's comment is meant to be seen a lot more benevolently than this-

First of all, it's Colin that is saying that. The same guy that tells Penelope reading will not lead suitors to her and then BAM, he is proven wrong. So, the narrative is not on his side.

Secondly, it's a pretty standard joke for a series to lightly mock its source material, and the author herself put allusions to Jane Austen in the novels.

Of course, it's up to the audience to judge if the joke is well-meaning or not. Some could say that teasing Eloise for reading something more conventionally feminine when she is trying to find her place in society as an unconventional woman is a low blow.

Thank You so much for sending me your thoughts. I know this whole EMMA comment was a throw away line and I am putting WAY TOO MUCH thoughts into it. But still…. As an Austen fan this moment stuck with me.

First: they choose EMMA instead of PP (which is the more famous one). A story about a strong friendship between two women. One rich, one poor, both good human beings who deserve happiness, who have a fight mostly based on misunderstandings and miscommunication. So the Bridgerton authors knew exactly why they choose EMMA over other Austen novels. So they know their source material.

I also think the narrative is against Colin. But is Colin judging Eloise new interest in romance novels, supposed to make us look down on Colin? Or are the Bridgerton authors themselves looking down on Eloise for switching to romance novels, instead of reading feministic literature?

Especially because Eloise tries to be someone she isn’t. So - in the moment - they associate Emma with something negative. Which maybe wasn’t even on purpose but that’s the reason it stuck with me…

I know Lantern Hill Book Club finished ages ago but I just now (I know it’s ridiculous) read the last two chapters and here are my two cents.

LMM endings continue to be bizarre and rushed but in the way that Emily’s Quest is, by putting all the doubt of the supposed happily ever after on the last page. The light-headed happiness of Robin and Andrew is legitimate just as Emily’s gladness at marrying Teddy is, but LMM lays out her problems nevertheless. Jane still has to be the interlocutor to her parents which is a dreadful place for an only child to be (not to overshare but I’ve been there and it can be Bad), they all still need to live half the year in Toronto which is far too close to 60 Gay and Grandmother for my liking, and there is absolutely no resolution with the elephant in the room of Aunt Irene. Andrew has his vocation and potentially Robin is growing a spine, but have they grown up enough to talk through things like normal adults?

LMM overuses (imo) the romance novel trope of a misunderstanding leading to alienation—again paralleling Emily and Teddy, Robin and Andrew patch up miscommunication but not incompatibility. That would be a lot for a book of this purview, in some ways, since it is supposed to focus on Jane and Jane’s (occasionally erroneous) POV on situations. But like Emily, it echoes into grown-up issues so deeply that the reader’s urge is to have a grown-up resolution, or maybe a little epilogue. I see why her publishers wanted a sequel at that point.

But I ALSO think it’s telling that LMM didn’t want to write one. I wonder if she didn’t really know how to carry the whole world forward in a satisfying way considering Jody’s exit was a trifle slapdash and both the ideas of a happy Robin-Andrew and a conflicted Robin-Andrew feel painful to delve into. The first one would be dull—LMM thrives, as any good novelist does, on conflict—and the second would just carve out the same dynamic as in this book, only more sordid because there would be no eucatastrophe a second time around. The only way I could see a middle ground is if Grandmother and Aunt Irene conveniently died or if there were a significant time jump, but neither solution were the types of things LMM did. Jane has already become old before her time; I really feel like Maud must have had no more coming-of-age arc to complete without the intense self-identification she had with Emily (writing and mental illness) or Pat (house worship and mental illness).

Can I ask why compromise is longer than the golds ?

When I write fanfic, I tend to follow the same writing principles I use with original fiction. The story needs to start very shortly before the central conflict begins, but there also needs to be enough context for the reader to understand the conflict. Likewise, the story should end soon after the central conflict is resolved, but with enough of an ending to leave the reader satisfied.

The basic conflict of The Golds is “Jace and Aegon need to figure out how to balance married life and a surprise pregnancy while dealing with all their other obligations.” So their wedding was a natural place to begin the story, to give a glimpse of their “normal state” before they find out she’s pregnant. Eventually, after a lot of other drama, Jace and Aegon succeed in figuring out how to handle married life and parenthood together with all their other royal duties. So the fic ends soon after that, even though there are other unresolved conflicts, like Elenar’s fostering. Those other conflicts are reserved for resolution in future fics.

With The Golds, we didn’t need to know all the backstory from when Jace and Aegon were kids. It was nice to know, but not essential, and the stuff that was need-to-know could easily be included via the occasional flashback or dialogue.

As I was brainstorming Luce and Aemond’s fic, I realized they have a very different situation. A lot of their conflict, “Luce and Aemond need to navigate their miscommunications and misunderstandings while trying to prove themselves,” is rooted in their childhood. Their conflict actually starts at Driftmark, and they both have emotional baggage from their childhood. So I knew I needed to spend some time writing about them as kids.

I originally thought I could get away with just a few short childhood chapters, like an extended prologue, but then I realized their childhood arc was an entire story by itself. So I kinda view Compromised as a trilogy, and Chapters 1-9 are essentially Book 1, with its own sub-conflict of “Luce and Aemond have a falling-out; can they mend their friendship?” By the time Chapter 9 comes out, the total word count for 1-9 will be over 70k, which is the length of a typical novel.

(By the way, it is much faster than average to write, edit, and post a 70k novel in the span of 4.5 months while also writing, editing, and posting a different 60k word novel, which I’m not getting paid for at all other than with kudos and comments. Luckily, so far I’ve only gotten one anon commenter who seems to think I’m updating too slow, because apparently 3 weeks between updates = abandoning the fic. 💀)

If you’ve read the Handbook, then you know that the childhood arc doesn’t end very happily for Luce and Aemond. So that leads us to Volume/Book 2, where the conflict gets really juicy and we see their POVs of the Handbook and The Golds. But if you’ve read The Golds, then you know that Arc 2 doesn’t end super great for them either…so that leads us to Volume/Book 3, where we might finally see them achieve a happy ending (after a lot more drama, of course).

TLDR: Compromised is a multi-year slow burn saga, whereas The Golds takes place in a very specific time of Jace and Aegon’s life about very specific topics. (Jace and Aegon are going to be main characters again in future fics, don’t worry.)

bdubs? he must have been euphoric. he was finally given a spot in ethos heart in the way etho always has one in his. this was some sign that said hey, i matter to him too!

which only made it worse for him when etho did things for grian and cleo he would never do for him.

bdubs wondering if it meant anything at all to etho, or if it was some big joke. if he and his stupid big heart was some joke to etho. if etho understood that all itd take to get bdubs on his side was the slightest attention that way, dropping the act once he was satisfied with bdubs devotion.

to bdubs, it sure would be looking like he didn't ever matter to etho, only what he could do to keep etho alive did. nothing about his wellbeing or even happiness mattered to etho

bdubs told him he would not kill him, no matter what. even when etho told him he wouldn't blame him if we did. and etho couldn't even bother lying about failing a task for bdubs' sake

its not even that bdubs would care if etho attacked him for a task. if there was anything he could do for etho he'd do it in a heart beat, including losing a few hearts. but the fact that etho didn't even care enough to go 'yeah sure id fail a task for you' after bdubs proclaimed his loyalty

Brother when I tell you that the be nice to bdubs day episode makes me sick after what etho did. Oh my god. Oh my god.

The thing is about etho is that, he doesn't lie to bdubs. I don't think he does, anyway. All that kindness he offered bdubs - well, it was obviously a bit to embarrass him, but it was also all true. He doesn't like to lie to bdubs. He's haunted by the time he promised something (a life) and didn't deliver, to the point where when he did it again (promised to help bdubs with anything he needed, then laughed at his face when bdubs sought out his help) he felt SICK

Etho doesn't like to make promises, because he hates not to deliver on them. Bdubs loves to make promises he wholeheartedly intends to deliver on, or that he hopes the receiving party will know he'll try his heart off to deliver on. Bdubs values, so much, the very act of trying, the intent behind it. Etho values results. It's a dissonance neither can really see. So it leads to miscommunication and misunderstandings

Bdubs has promised so much to etho, so many times - etho must believe the words empty, no matter how earnest bdubs is. Meanwhile, because Etho is so careful about managing expectations, he comes off as... Aloof. As not returning even half of bdubs' earnest feelings. It's such a difference in their expression of love.

Etho felt bad, and thus he pushed himself to express love in a way bdubs would understand - through words of adoration. But then he immediately returned to his old ways. Immediately withdrew, as if scared. Because he is scared. In truth, he's terrified of the feelings he holds for bdubs, and how much it can hurt the both of them. But instead of seeing that, Bdubs can only see it as Etho playing a sick game with him. Bdubs, so starved for Etho's attention and love and devotion.

I doubt he would've promised cleo or grian he would protect them against the boogeys. He's told cleo before, that he's not a protector. He doesn't want to give the impression he is because he hates the idea of betraying that impression. But in the moment, he did become a protector. But it's that seed of doubt that it plants that hurts so much.

Because now, Bdubs will always see etho and remember that he refused to vow his protection to bdubs, whilst turning around and protecting his allies. He'll always see etho and remember that heartbreak.

He feels like he's been throwing so, so much love to a complete brick wall. Somethings gotta snap.

I want bdubs to either kill etho or try to hurt him - to genuinely go after him. But also if he does - if either of them do - I'll have a category 10 ethubs meltdown I s2g
