no matter how many times i watch episode 10, the “namby pamby in a silk gown pining for his boyfriend” line never fails to completely turn my stomach.
the entire scene is probably one of the most enraging moments of television i’ve ever witnessed tbh. this show is so good at making you feel shit oh my god.

“i should have let the english kill you. what you’ve become (queer/feminine) is a fate worse than death.”
nobody besides ed in canon knows that this is what actually went down. and nobody besides ed ever will! because They Cancelled My Fucking Show!

Perhaps the most "spiritual" thing any of us can do is simply to look through our own eyes, see with eyes of wholeness, and act with integrity and kindness.

The parallel here is killing me. Might look similar, right? Wrong, obviously. Completely different motivations for Ed cleaning up. There is hope in his eyes in the first gif. He wants to try and live through his heartbreak.
Well, feels nice to tidy up a little (maybe I can do this)
He's a part of his found family, and they're there for him, and they're going to do a talent show, and Ed will try to see a way forward, because he's not alone.
Second gif? Ed is a man with a plan. Everything in his head is already decided, and all hope is gone from his eyes, regardless of what he's saying. He's trying to sound over-confident, but
Feel like a million bucks, actually. (i've never felt worse)
Yeah, I had a very rough night last night. (help me help me help me)
It's easy to overlook things when you don't know what to look for. The fact that the episode is called Red Flags is obviously deliberate with more than one meaning.

Wherever You Go, There You Are is just the 'came back from the dead wrong' trope, except Stede was never actually dead, his wife didn't want him to come back and it's Stede realising that he's come back wrong.

Ok, but here’s the thing — murdering someone actually is that much more dramatic than running away to be a pirate.
The fact that Stede basically deflates and says to Mary, “I suppose you’re right,” when she says it’s not says so much about his self esteem, and it breaks my heart every time.
It also feels like an echo of Stede telling Chauncey, “I think you’re right,” after he calls him a monster and a plague.

It's so funny that my reputation at work is basically "takes directions/instructions too literally Amelia Bedelia-style, vomits on the clock, and reads newspapers from the 1920s"--identical to my reputation in grad school. I am nothing if not consistent (have autism and gastroparesis)

do you know what being an adult is?
It’s learning to be who you are.
Other adults will tell you its taxes and having kids and going to work but -
its learning to be who you are.
It’s learning to be the you that you couldn’t be when you were a child.  Because the adults in charge of your life made those decisions and told you who you could be.  It’s learning that you don’t have to be the ‘you’ they said you were (and sometimes that’s a very hard lesson to learn).  It’s learning to take the ‘you’ you were told you were and trimming off the parts that you decide aren’t you (and sometimes that a very hard thing to do).  It’s adding parts that you always wanted but weren’t allowed.  It’s finding the stifled, hidden, undeveloped parts of you that you had to hide or ignore as a child and bringing them to the surface, to nourish or just learn to deal with.  It’s learning how to work around the parts of You that you don’t want but that are a part of You all the same.  It’s learning to accept those parts and realize that - today they may be a part of you that has to stay but maybe they don’t always have to be - or maybe they do but you’ll find better ways to make them You as you grow.
Yes, there are taxes and going to work and, maybe, kids as well but that isn’t what makes you an adult.  Being an adult is realizing that you make the rules, good or bad, for yourself now.  Being an adult is realizing that sometimes the outside world is going to make rules for you too whether you like it or not.  But being an adult is realizing that those rules don’t make you You.  Only you get to decide who You are.
It’s a little bit scary.  It’s a little bit hard.  It’s a lot bit ugly.  It’s not something you ever stop having to do.
Working on You.
Being an adult is being responsible for who You are.  And yeah, it does get easier each decade.  Practice will do that.  It never stops, but you do get happier, year by year, decade by decade, with who You are.  If you’re doing it right.

I can make that happen. Just let me know. Remember, my Marcus was the undertaker. He was so lazy, he would report every death as natural causes. Murder's a natural cause.
