Elton John breaks down, says he ‘doesn’t have much time left’

Sir Elton John has revealed he wept for 45 minutes straight as he recorded a song for his new album.

The music icon, who celebrated his 78th birthday yesterday, had a realisation about his own mortality while working on the track and began to fear he “doesn’t have much time left”.

The Grammy, Tony, Emmy, Golden Globe and Oscar winner has previously revealed he’s suffered sight loss, after an infection left him blind in his right eye, with “limited vision” in his left.

Speaking on this week’s episode of the SmartLess podcast – hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett – Sir Elton said he broke down while writing and recording ‘When This Old World is Done with Me’.

“I wrote a song at the end of the album and I just get the lyrics, Bernie Taupin’s lyrics,” he said.

“And so, I’m writing the verse, like, ‘Oh, this is really pretty.’

“Then I get to the chorus and of course it’s about my death. And when you get to my age, which is near 100, you think, ‘How much time have I got left?’

“You’ve got children, you’ve got a wonderful husband, you just think about mortality.

“I just broke down for 45 minutes and it’s all on film,” Sir Elton said.

The emotional scene was included on his recent documentary, Elton John: Never Too Late.

Multiple Grammy-winning US artist Brandi Carlile, who also appeared on the podcast, said: “I want everybody to see it because it’s really human, like deeply flawed and embarrassing. And the kind of shit that you do when you forget that there is a camera on is what’s really interesting.

“His voice started to shake and I thought, ‘Oh, he’s going, like he’s going to really go.’ And he went into a real moment,” said Carlile, who is married to English comedic actress, writer and director Catherine Shepherd.

Who Believes in Angels?

‘When This Old World is Done with Me’ will appear on Sir Elton’s forthcoming collaboration album with Carlile, Who Believes in Angels?

It will include ‘Never Too Late’, a song recorded for the Elton John: Never Too Late documentary.

The title track ‘Who Believes in Angels?’ was released as the album’s first official single last month.

The song’s music video, directed by David LaChapelle, depicts Sir Elton and Carlile performing the song in a Captain Fantastic pinball machine, with backup dancers impersonating Tina Turner and Little Richard.

It references Sir Elton’s 1975 album Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy.

It also includes the current single ‘Swing for the Fences’, which both singers have described as “an anthem for young gay kids”.

“‘Swing for the Fences’ was a little gem I took into the studio with me: I’m a gay woman, Elton’s a gay man and we both have families, and our dreams have come true,” Brandi Carlile explained.

“I was thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool to write an anthem for young gay kids out there that calls them into a bigger, more elegant, more fabulous life?’

“Just like, ‘Go, go! Don’t let anything hold you back!’”

Who Believes in Angels? will be released in Australia next Friday through Island EMI Records.

I'm actually marveling at your portrayal of Palpatine. Sure, in the new sith obi-wan au, but in every iteration I've read from you, it doesn't even compare to anything else I've read, I just can see and hear Palpy so clearly when you write him. It's disgusting how i character he is every time. I need like ... a tutorial? :D Pls??

haha, thank you :) yeah, ngl Palpatine IS the toughest character to get right and I will die on this hill; he is absolutely more difficult to write than Obi-Wan.

The tutorial consists of knowing how a groomer operates, essentially. Sure, you have the traits of psychopathy and sociopathy, the blatant narcissism, the delusions of being better than everyone, but if you want my two cents, (obviously you do when you sent this ask lol) the real core of his villainy is his grooming behavior. Sociopathy and psychopathy do not necessarily lead to evil, many diagnosed people lead fulfilling lives that do not cause them or others any destruction. Sociopathy and psychopathy are NOT inherently evil.

Grooming is evil by nature. And groomers absolutely follow a rulebook.

Step one: Targeting a vulnerable person. (Groomers have a radar for people who are in a vulnerable position - orphaned kids, traumatized people, homeless people, etc., could be anything.)

Step two: Gaining trust. (the victims of grooming call this 'kindness' - much like Anakin does on many occasions - when in reality, it's rehearsed empathy. It's a performance. They're nice to you, bring you gifts, take care of your most basic needs - food, shelter, companionship to make you feel like there's somebody in this world who actually gives a shit about you.

Step three: Isolating the target from their loved ones. If you are completely alone, that's a win for them, obviously. But because they more often than not target minors, there's someone taking care of them, at least one person who goes: this guy/gal has rancid vibes, I don't want you to hang out with them anymore. The groomer convinces the victim that their caretaker has nefarious motivations/goals (projecting much) and that if the victim calls the authority, they will be the one who's actually in trouble, not the groomer.

Step four: Slowly exposing the target to sexual stuff. This could be anything, really, it could start by just showing the victim porn without rhyme or reason to instructing them to perform some mild sexual acts. In Palpatine's case, this manifests as exposing the target to the power of the dark side and encouraging them to use it. However, do I think that Palpatine was entirely uninterested in Anakin in a sexual way? My feelings on this vary - sometimes I do see it and sometimes I don't. I see the constant unnecessary touching and constantly invading Anakin's personal space and I'm like: I need to perform exorcism on myself until I don't remember ever seeing this ever again. Then I see the intent behind and I think - hm, perhaps this is purely a slaver's touch asserting dominance over his property. Like I said, my feelings on this are unclear. Let's just say it's really fucking gross either way, which is something we can all agree on.

Step five: The actual sex. Again, in Palpatine's case, this manifests as revealing himself for who he is (abuser) and taking Anakin (the abused) down with him.

TLDR; you have to have the process of grooming at the forefront of your mind to write Palpatine well - even if in different aus his victim does not need to always be Anakin.

I think what's frustrating me the most about what's going on in campaign 3 right now is that the main idea being talked about and given way too much emphasis runs counter to the theme of the m9. If the Nein were about the idea that you can become better no matter what you did or who you were before, the argument set forth and being entertained as a legitimate conflict right now is very "these guys did bad shit a thousand years ago and they should die. Somehow this is good for everyone despite the centuries of good they've done since." Ashton's point was extremely astute that if that's the case, cleanse the entire world motherfucker because we're no better, but the hypocrisy of that was neatly sidestepped (which is at least consistent with Ludinus and fascists of his ilk in general). It's not a real argument, guys. We're not meant to take him seriously.

The gods are the stewards of the only world anyone living has ever known. The fact that they made bad choices that hurt Ludinus and people he knew is a legitimate grievance. The gods are in fact flawed, capable of selfishness, but when confronted with the enormity of the damage they were causing this world, they removed themselves and a whole chunk of their power to seal themselves behind the divine gate. They didn't abandon the world. They didn't withdraw their power and sulk, leaving everyone without their gifts until they begged for a return. They simply care for mortals on the terms of those mortals and ask for nothing not freely given. The people who follow the gods find them worthy of that patronage and Ludinus does not get to erase the choice of everyone else who doesn't agree with him because he's hurt, even if he did have a point (he doesn't).

He thinks, for some reason, that his actions won't result in the same kind of harm on a global scale and completely ignores the damage he has already wrought in the name of a higher purpose because that's what the gods did and they're no better than him. But they are, dipshit. They are better than you. There are people in the world they may not be better than, salient point, but you're not one of them.

And after the light and love that was the core of the Nein - the very thing that shaped Essek into the campaign 3 NPC that he is - it feels extremely disingenuous for "do the gods deserve their power now that you've seen them at their worst" to be perceived as an actual, legitimate conflict in the endgame and a talking point in the Fandom. Especially when the Hells have already been pretty clear that they're not looking to be judge, jury, and executioner of the gods. This is not the central conflict of campaign 3, it's one dumbass's weird motivation to be a villain that needs to be stopped and the fact that it keeps coming up as anything approaching credible is a condemnation of the purity culture mindset in online spaces today.

My local bestbuy tech support counter is shockingly competent and wonderful.
