Student protestors were just brutalized by the police here at Wayne State University in Detroit during and after the police swept the encampment
They arrested female students and one student’s hijab was ripped off.
President Espy at Wayne State University was invited to speak with students yesterday at 6pm. She sent the police to brutalize us at 530am the next morning instead.
Wayne State University has a large Arab student population, and Detroit and Dearborn are home to the largest Arab population in the United States. This is just after the weekend the People’s Conference for Palestine was hosted here.
I’m so angry.

Police cleared the anti-Israel encampment at Wayne State University in Detroit on Thursday morning after giving campus protesters a one-hour warning to vacate the area. Several arrests were made, and a group of students continued to protest, but the police swiftly cleared the camp.
The continued standoff between the school and the protesters recently forced all classes to go online rather than in person.
FOX 2 in Detroit reported:
Police dismantle pro-Palestinian encampment at Wayne State University; protesters arrested Police donning riot gear descended on a pro-Palestinian encampment on the campus of Wayne State University on Thursday morning. Officers could be seen removing protesters from the encampment and breaking down tents. The encampment was set up last week amid the violence in Gaza. Among the activists’ demands are divestment from weapons manufacturing companies supplying Israel, a full disclosure of investments, and ceasing delegation trips to Israel. After protesters were moved off the encampment, they began marching on the campus, where some people clashed with police officers. According to the university, at least 12 people were arrested. The removal of the protesters comes days after the Detroit university shifted to remote operations, citing an “ongoing public safety issue.” In a new statement from school president Kimberly Andrews Espy, she said the encampment “presented legal, health and safety, and operational challenges for our community.”
See the videos below:
Listen to the shrieking as one of the protesters was arrested.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), who had visited the encampment the night before, must have been on speed dial for the protesters because she showed up at the scene quickly and berated the police over the alleged removal of a hijab from one of the arrested students.
youtube
This is what Tlaib was doing the night before at the encampment: helping the protesters block the movement of a police car.
Naturally, the students arrested after the camp was cleared were released later.
The Detroit Free Press reported:
Protesters released from jail after being detained by police at WSU encampment Protesters detained by police Thursday morning when officers cleared a pro-Palestinian encampment on Wayne State University’s campus were released hours later to applause, hugs and the sounds of honking horns and drums. At least 100 protesters gathered outside of the Detroit Detention Center, to await their release around 5 p.m. Thursday after the early morning police action. With arms linked, five detained protesters walked out of the Detroit Detention Center with their lawyers and family members. They were met with cheers and tears of joy from those who came to show support. The crowd’s chants of “Free Palestine” hummed as they drew closer to those released.
Read that last line again and ask yourself which side most of the press is on in this issue.

Hundreds gathered in Grand Circus Park on May 27 to march through downtown Detroit, protesting the recent U.S.-armed Zionist attack that set refugee tents ablaze in Rafah, adding more bodies to the tens of thousands martyred in less than eight months. CNN confirmed that the munitions used in the deadly strike on Rafah were U.S.-made, provided by Genocide Joe Biden.

Police have broken up a pro-Palestinian encampment at Wayne State University in Detroit and arrested at least 12 people after organizers turned down offers to meet with school officials and refused to leave. Video shows Wayne State and Detroit police in riot gear tearing down fencing and breaking down tents erected on May 23 on green space near the undergraduate library. The protesters chanted: “There’s no riot here. Why are you in riot gear?” University President Kimberly Andrews Espy cited health and safety concerns and disruptions to campus operations for the police deployment. The camp, she said, “created an environment of exclusion – one in which some members of our campus community felt unwelcome and unable to fully participate in campus life”. Protest camps sprang up across the US and in Europe as students demanded their universities stop doing business with Israel or companies they say support its war on Gaza. Organisers seek to amplify calls to end the war, which they describe as a genocide against the Palestinians.

"Walter Reuther was a straitlaced man. He didn't drink or smoke, and he did not swear. So… someone gave him this to him and said "Walter, any time that you want to swear at somebody, but you can't, put this on your desk and you can just point at it."

As a student starting my first year at Wayne State University, please allow me to share with you what is happening on campus.
First, a bit about myself. For the past two years, I have been active with Hillel of Metro Detroit while attending Oakland Community College. I was an Applebaum Family Intern and the president of the Jewish Student Organization at OCC, and I participated in Hillel’s J-Talk and Israel Fellowship programs. I am currently the president of the WSU Jewish Student Organization.
I was looking forward to being in Detroit and starting my WSU student experience. Then, the WSU Student Senate posted a statement that made me feel that, as an active supporter of Israel, I am not a welcome member of the Wayne State student community.
The Student Senate wrote a “letter of support standing with our Palestinian Student Population.”
In this letter they state: “This month, Palestinians sifted through the wreckage of their destroyed homes and their damaged psyches. More than 1,000 Israeli soldiers stormed the overcrowded camp last week as rockets and drone missiles struck private homes and public infrastructure. Nobody could guess where the next barrage would come from. Jenin raid is over, but Palestinians are left to cope with the trauma. The camp in Jenin was established in 1953 for refugees from more than 50 villages and cities in the northern parts of Palestine. Since then, it has been the target of continuous Israeli military raids. As a student body, we strongly condemn the genocide of the Palestinian people by the Israeli apartheid government.”
There is no mention that Israel’s operation targeted terrorist cells because the Palestinian Authority had abdicated its policing of Jenin. No mention of the numerous Israeli victims of Palestinian terror. Characterizing this mission as genocide and the Israeli government as apartheid makes clear where my student government stands.
Ironically, earlier in the statement they claim that “Student Senate is focused on the student experience first, ensuring inclusivity and equity for our peers.”
I certainly do not feel included, nor do other Jewish students.
A couple of years ago, my brother was among a group of Jewish students who met with then President Wilson and Provost Kornbluh after a similar incident with Student Senate. While President Wilson was understanding, the students felt that Provost Kornbluh was not.
Now that there is a new Wayne State University president, I hope the administration will press the Student Senate to focus their efforts on campus issues rather than complex international matters that warrant much more nuance.
It is sad that this is what Jewish students have to deal with at Wayne State. Fortunately, we have Hillel of Metro Detroit to help us, along with the greater Detroit Jewish community.
