okay. so.
cards on the table: ive had a huge question about a major part of SMEN for quite some time now and all the research ive done whilst trying to solve said question has been pretty much futile.
so.
i'm asking it to tumblr dot com instead.
major spoilers for seeking mr eaten's name, as mentioned. yes i'm asking this for exactly the reason you think i'm asking this.
what is st gawain's,,, Deal? like, what does it look like? how does it function? is it a dullahan situation or do we just go full body horror with it? exactly how literal (and visible) is "you chop off your head and get hollowed out to become a candle"?
i've seen the text. i know what the storylet says. ive just always struggled to picture, like,,,, what it looks like from the outside. whether or not you're essentially just a wax recreation of yourself. if you even still breathe and sleep after That Whole Thing. if you even bleed anymore.
i know these are all questions i can come up with answers for myself. and i can and will and that is a threat. but also i'm open to decapitation-themed suggestions.

I love period works based on relatively recent decades that are built entirely out of the childhood nostalgia of the people making them, and as such end up being just as much time capsules of the time they were made as the time they're set.
Like. I don't know if I'm wording this right. But "show or film based on a particular decade but entirely from the real memories yet flawed nostalgia glasses of a writer who was a kid at the time" is always going to be very much a product of its time. Like. Grease and Happy Days, both set in the 50s, could only ever have been made in the 70s and early 80s. Hairspray (the original film) and Heartbeat, both set in the 60s, could only ever have been made in the late 80s and the 90s. Ashes to Ashes, set in the early 80s, could only ever have been made in the late 00s. And Turning Red, set in the early 00s, could only ever have been made in the 2020s.
Because none of those works are true accurate depictions of what those years were objectively actually like. They're true accurate depictions of what those years felt like, if you were twelve at the time.
And that's something future generations of writers are never going to be able to quite emulate in quite the same way.

That one time, a wax statue scared me
_____________________________
Tumblr media
_____________________________
When I was in elementary school, I went to this middle ages museum where they had wax statues. I didn't find them creepy at all, I was actually really impressed by how realistic they looked. I was so impressed, in fact, that at the end of the tour, I didn't even notice that there was this wax peasent lady who was looking out of a window on the higher exhibit apartment scenery.
So when I eventually looked up, it scared the crap out of me, and I flinched so much that I managed to startle some of my classmates nearby. Like I genuinely thought that in those first couple of seconds that somebody was staring at me how a stalker would, it didn't help either that she had an angry expression upon her face. But it does explain why a different wax statue was looking dejected after he had fallen to the ground with his baked goods. Its those small details that matter the most in a exhibit, because even if there's no story behind them, you could understand the context by just looking at them.
Speaking of wax statues, the one on the picture is from an attraction in England called the Chamber of Horrors. The plot of Chamber of Horrors began in 1793, during the French Revolution. Marie Tussaud, who was associated with French aristocracy at the time and had experience manufacturing wax figurines, was tasked with creating death masks for revolution victims such as King Louis XVI and Mary Antoinette. This is where she found the public's great fascination with the darker aspects of humanity and horror. After acquiring her mentor's whole wax display and studio, Marie and her son went from France to the United Kingdom in 1802 in search of a new beginning. After extensively traversing the country, showing the death masks, relics, and other gruesome parts of her presentation, her popularity began to rise. Marie's attraction was the only one that was grounded in historical truth rather than sensationalism.
The Chamber of Horrors expanded throughout the ensuing decades, adding numerous other British criminals, such as infamous murderer Mary Eleanor Pearcy. Over 31,000 people attended the launch of her figure, which caused Marylebone Road to be blocked. Additionally, new objects were acquired to be shown in the chamber, such as the Old Bailey dock, Mary Pearcy's stroller, and the door of Newgate Prison.
The Chamber of Horrors is ingrained in both the attraction's DNA and Madame Tussauds London's heritage. You are confronted with genuine terror as it illuminates the most sinister aspects of human nature and the public's infatuation with crime.
I originally wasn't planning on writing this post, but because I am a horror fan, as well as a historical wonderer, I find these kinds of topics to be very interesting. And I wanted to spread that knowledge onto others.
