Idk how people feel about this but I don't really like this description of Duke from Robin War. Firstly, Duke is not really 'the brains' of WAR - they get their orders from a disguised Alfred, and they don't really solve any puzzles (which would be Duke's specialty) so I don't even know what 'the brains' refers to here.
Secondly, I feel like this is the start of the 'Duke is WAR's leader' misconception that persists to this day. In the six issues leading up to Robin War, Duke gets recruited, Troy dies, WAR breaks up, Riko gets them back together, and they fight a Talon. Duke never does any leading; he spends the majority of the time arguing with Dre, flirting with Izzy, and snarking anyone under the sun. A huge part of his early character is that he's difficult to work with! Arguably Riko is the 'leader' of WAR if we have to pick one, but they're written more as equals who have a mysterious boss than as leader/followers.
The idea of even having a 'face' or 'leader' of WAR goes against the We, the notion of the collective; the point of WAR is they're all in it together, and none of them is 'more special' than the other because they all represent Gotham's youth. I know this is very nitpicky but it's important to WAR's message Duke is not the leader.

Continuing with celebration of Asexual Awareness Week with another fun poll!
This list is another selection of characters I could see being asexual! This is my second poll relating to characters that I can see being asexual. I like to see if anyone else likes the ideas or at least a singular character that could be asexual!

what do you reckon the mareven children would be like
omgggg like,,, mareven is a couple i barely imagine having kids. in my mind they’re 9 times out of 10 doomed by the narrative so i never see them lasting that long 😭 but i have thought about it in the sense of the arranged marriage scenario, where maven and mare are probably expected to have an heir. because by themselves without social pressure i don’t think they’d be a couple to have kids…. or maybe i just have to think about it more.
i think they’d have one kid and that child is almost exactly like maven— in looks and in personality except she’s a girl. she’s ambitious and cunning and snarky and scheming and clever and cruel. she’s lonely. and she’d have the doomed eldest-daughter-is-the-unwanted-mirror-of-their-father dynamic with maven. because i think maven would be more sweet on a child that looks and acts like mare, but would be more distant with a child that is exactly his carbon copy. how to approach the product of the shell he’s always felt was inferior? his daughter feels like karma to him.
and to make things more interesting i feel like this daughter is 100% her momma’s girl and has complete loyalty to mare over her dad, similar to maven and elara just without the toxicity. and mare loves her sooo much like her daughter is her whole world even though she is exactly like the husband she hates so much (but if she can adore someone exactly like maven than how can she completely despise maven?? hmm food for thought). maybe mare gets a taste of the desperation elara had felt when she watched maven get shunned by his father too.
either way i haven’t seen much on oc mareven kids but in my mind this is personally the most interesting dynamic to me. they gotta carry on the calore curse in being the most angstiest family known to man

Because I hc Roger/Rouge/Rayleigh, I keep imagining Rayleigh's heartbreak after Baterilla, operating under the assumption that Rouge and any child she had by Roger would have been lost. And years later, in his semi-retirement, he watches what happens at Marineford and realizes that Roger and Rouge's son is gone and that maybe, just maybe, if only he'd known, if only he'd been told, if only he'd been there, their child could have been his in another life.

September was a good month for reading ! I've already started on my first October book, Black Leopard Red Wolf. I can tell you right now it's unlike anything I've read before, is dark as heck, and I'm loving it.
I've got three books under my belt for the 23for23 challenge so far, here's to twenty more. 📚🏳️‍🌈👏

Song of Achilles did make me cry and there are some beautiful, extremely quotable turns of prose. But honestly? Even without being a classicist or a Greek mythology enthusiast— it really kind of sucks. There's no substance or complexity to it, the characters are one-dimensional and it's painfully YA. It's written for a Booktok audience who doesn't give a fuck about Homer's poems or Greek myths as a genre. I mean I'm also largely disinterested but I hate books that loses everything that defines a genre in order to appeal to people who don't care for it.
Idk if you want an incredible reimagining of the Trojan war for an audience who doesn't care much about the Illiad, read The Troy Trilogy by David Gemmell. It makes no pretence of being faithful to the Illiad and takes out all mention of gods and magic, and sadly doesn't have a lot of gay in it, despite the protagonist being one of the most badass bisexual women in fantasy fiction (Andromache in the Old Guard can't hold a candle to this Andromache). But for all that, it has very complex and vivid characters, cinematic battle scenes and is an emotional rollercoaster that makes you blow through all three books in one sitting. It's very much about how war and pride and honour can make people you like and believe in do horrific things, how morality is informed by culture and era, how you can feel pity for even the worst characters, and how desolation lives hand in glove with glory. Once you read that you'll realise how hollow Madeline Miller's work is.
