While I am annoyed that the writers left the Sloane storyline unresolved, I am almost relieved that we didn't get the storyline that was initially proposed (Sloane having no memory of Luther/the Sparrow Academy and being an audience member at Luther's show)

The reason why I liked Sloane and Luther is because they are reflections of each other. They have both lived their entire lives for Reginald, having been two of the most loyal members of their respected Academies, who didn't get an opportunity to be independent of that life.

For Sloane, Luther is hope that she can step away from this life at the Academy, that there are options and horizons if she is brave enough to step away. He is proof that she can be her own person and live for herself because Luther was once in the exact same position as her.

For Luther, Sloane makes it much easier for him to forgive himself for dedicating so much time to Reginald who never truly cared about him. If he sees Sloane as being worthy of love despite not being able to break away from Reginald, maybe he can see the same for himself.

Without that shared connection that really only those two characters could have (because again they were much more loyal to Reginald than the other members of their academies) I don't see their romance being as strong or as compelling. If they were going to continue the Sloane storyline, I would have wanted it to still be Sparrow Sloane.
