An introduction to DeVita

Do you want to learn all about the AOMG artist DeVita? This article will cover everything you need to know about the third female member to join the labels roster.

Prelude

In early April of 2020, the Korean hip-hop label AOMG ambiguously announced that a new artist was signing onto the label. This label was grounded by the Korean-American triple-threat; Jay Park, who’s also one of its executives. This is a label with a very organic feel and artist-oriented nature, which stands out compared to many other music labels.

On April 3rd, the label’s official Instagram account posted a video. It was titled, “Who’s The Next AOMG?” where fellow AOMG members talked about this upcoming recruit. They sprinkled small hints and details by sharing their thoughts on the artist without mentioning who.

Around the world, fans immediately began speculating on who this could be. The major consensus was that it had to be the solo artist Lee Hi, due to reporting like this: “AOMG responds ‘nothing is confirmed’ to reports of Lee Hi signing on with the label”

A few other names got thrown in fan speculations like Hanbin (B.I), previous member of IKON, Jvcki Wai, and MOON (문) aka Moon Sujin. This despite a few of these already being signed to other labels.

On April 6th, three days later, the account was updated with a part two. This time dropping more hints, which would exclude many names from fan speculations.

On the 7th of April, the label’s official Instagram account posted a short teaser. The video sported an 80’s retrofuturistic setting, with a woman turned from the camera, dressed in all black, rocking braids, and some glistening high-heels. As it seemed to be a female, some were now certain that it had to be Lee Hi. A small few actually guessed correctly that the one who would be joining AOMG would be Ms DeVita.

Finally on April 9th, it was official! She debuted with the music video, from which the teaser clips was taken from, EVITA!, which accompanied the release of her EP, CRÈME.

What does the name DeVita mean?

The name DeVita, draws inspiration and meaning from two things. Firstly, Eva Perón – also known as Evita – who was Argentina’s former First Lady. When Chloe was learning about Eva’s life, it inspired her to combine “Devil” and “Evita”, thus creating “DeVita”. The name signifies the duality of how both Eva Perón and DeVita could be perceived. Either being a devil, or an angel depending on the eye of the beholder. Secondly, Salvatore Di Vita, a character from Cinema Paradiso, was also a source of inspiration.

An introduction to DeVita

Chloe Cho – now known under the artist name DeVita – was born and raised in South Korea, until the age of eleven. In 2009, she moved to Chicago, where she would learn English.

In 2013, she went back to Korea and participated in the third season of the show; K-pop Star. A talent show, where the “big three” (the three largest music labels in Korea) hosts auditions to find the next big k-pop star. However she didn’t win, therefore neither got signed.

Later on, she returned to Chicago and graduated high school. After reflecting on what she wanted to do next, she decided to make music. In 2014, her pursuit to become an artist brought her to the talent show Kollaboration. On this show, she performed covers and actually ended up being a finalist. Despite her talents, she did not triumph as the winner of the show.

Not letting these losses stop her, she started releasing music on Soundcloud. The earliest release I could find, Halfway Love (Ruff), was from 2016. Her catalogue consisted of both covers and original music.

One day, Kirin, an artist and CEO of the music label 8balltown Records, was introduced to DeVita’s music. He liked what he heard and the two linked up. In May of 2018, WEKEYZ, one of 8balltown’s producer duos released a track titled Sugar. This track featured both DeVita, and the AOMG rapper Ugly Duck. This was the beginning of many collaborations to come.

On August 28th of 2018, just a few months later, AOMG released Sugar (Puff Daehee Mix).

This was a remix done by Puff Daehee, the alter ego of Kirin. Along with this track, it was accompanied by a music video starring Kirin, DeVita, and Ugly Duck. For most people, this was their first time seeing DeVita.

DeVita continued doing features on many songs by Korean artists while creating a little buzz for herself. There’s one notable feature, which could be seen as an important milestone in her career. That is her feature on the track Noise, from AOMG artist Woo Won Jae’s project, titled af.

In a tweet a few days after the release of CRÈME, she shared the significance of this moment.

“I was still making minimum wage working at a restaurant back when Noise dropped- I wrote my part during my shift on the back of this receipt paper. This was about a year and a half ago. A little bit after that I got a call from Pumpkin at 3am Chicago time. He said Jay wanted to meet in Philly in 4 hours. They put me on a plane and the rest is history.”

The phone call she mentioned in her tweet, about Jay wanting to meet, must have been made around September 2018. Jay was performing in Philadelphia at the time. The moment they met in Philadelphia was actually captured through a photo of the two. However, this picture ended up getting removed later on.

Fast forward a few months and Jay had just released his Ask About Me EP. The project focused on a western audience, so he went to the States on a promo run. During his visit, he also met up with DeVita once again, as can be seen here.

Finally, on April 9th, her being signed to AOMG was officially announced and she debuted with her EP titled CRÈME. Her joining AOMG, looked like something that happened pretty naturally. The vast majority of artists she had collaborated on tracks with happened to be AOMG members. Getting comfortable with the AOMG family, likely made the decision to join crystal clear.

Artistically

Just a quick look at her body of work thus far, a majority of it is in English. However, she has no issues singing in Korean, as proven by her feature on Code Kunst’s; Let u in. The tone in her voice has this sort of mixture of many singers, a melting pot of sorts. It reminds me of Audrey Nuna, SAAY, H.E.R, some vocal riffs from Dinah Jane, and at times, just a tiny bit of Ariana Grande.

As an artist, she’s still in the early stages of carving out her own unique sound and style. There’s incredible potential here, but her distinct identity is not completely there yet. I see before me a caterpillar that within a couple years, will transform into a butterfly, with its own identifiable pattern to spread its wings out on.

From what she’s shown so far, I would say she seems most comfortable doing R&B and soul music. However, beyond a quick description I prefer to refrain from categorizing her. Mostly because artists generally feel limited when categorized. More importantly, because we have no idea what she has in store for the future.

Debut EP: CRÈME

CRÈME is DeVita’s “crème de la crème”. She constantly modified the tracklist to present her debut project in a way that held her personal standard; essentially presenting us her best tracks. The result is CRÈME, which consists of five tracks, with a runtime of fourteen minutes altogether.

This EP showcases the fact that she is a competent songwriter, able to write some soulful, emotional ballads. It is completely in English and all the tracks are written by her, telling both life stories of her own and that of others. A majority of the production was handled by her “musical soulmate”; TE RIM, but other notable names, like Code Kunst show up as well.

Tracks:

Movies, introduces the project in a very gentle manner. In the track, DeVita paints a picture of a criminal couple, getting a rush, by committing crimes together. The lyrics feel inspired by movies like Bonnie and Clyde. My initial thoughts were that, for some ears, it could possibly be “too” calm as an opener. It doesn’t demand attention the way EVITA! does. Simply put, it’s not a bad track. I would just have put this track later on in the EP.

EVITA!, is something different compared to what I hear from others in the K-R&B lane. I love the 80’s aesthetic in both the track and music video. Sonically, the nostalgic saxophone riffs, warm lush synth pads, thumping bass line, results in a trip back to the 80s. With this recipe, topped with DeVita’s “current” contemporary soul and R&B voice makes for an interesting combination. The music video had that futuristic 80’s look with the neon colors, and I loved how the guns she played around with looked a lot like the “Needlers” from the Halo franchise. The title is once again just like DeVita’s name, an ode to the controversial Eva Perón. The instrumental was originally used by TE RIM, the producer of the track in 2017. His version has the same title as DeVita’s version and I recommend giving that one a listen as well, as it has a different feel to it. This track was definitely one of the highlights of the EP.

All About You, is a simple yet beautiful piano love ballad. Originating from her own tales of love, her vocals effortlessly capture what she felt during these moments.

1974 Live, is yet another ballad, but this time, with a calm guitar backing, playing a poppier R&B chord progression. DeVita’s voice is given a lot of space to be in the center of the track. As soon as I heard this track I became curious. What was the significance of this year, which would have her title the track as such? My questions were left unanswered… until the EP had marinated a while, when she tweeted: “1974 Live is about Christine Chubbuck”. In case you’re unfamiliar, Christine Chubbuck was a television news reporter, who made history in 1974. She was the first person to commit suicide live on air. According to her mother Christine’s suicide would on paper be due to an unfullfilling personal life. All throughout her life, she had experienced unreciprocated love. With this information tying back to the track, it becomes a lot less ambiguous and reveals a more cohesive narrative.

Show Me, is the final track of the EP, featuring immaculate production from the talented CODE KUNST. The sound is very moody, which fits her voice like a glove. This is my favorite performance on the entire EP, both lyrically and vocally. The lyrics present someone who’s fed up dealing with men, who talk the talk but don’t walk the walk. Now she’s looking for love with someone who’s honest and “real”.

With the project being a year old now, it has already gotten her nominated for both Rookie of the Year along with EVITA being nominated for Best R&B & Soul Track in the 18th iteration of the Korean Music Awards.

A majority of listeners seemed to enjoy the project. Many seem to be in love with her voice judging by the endless amounts of praise she has received, often described as painfully addicting, soothing, smooth, and so on.

I also asked a friend who’s a huge fan of Korean music, especially the hiphop and r&b scene to share her thoughts on the project. Here’s what she said:

"This whole project is empowering, in particular the tracks Show Me and EVITA! DeVita being a new artist, managed to impress me and many more listeners through this EP. As mentioned earlier, empowering lyrics with unique melodies and beats. Especially with the track EVITA! The fact that 1974 Live and EVITA! was referring to, two historically important women, is something that I love. This is one of my favorite EP:s of 2020 and DeVita is now included in my list of favorite artists." @Haonsmom

From what I’ve seen, only a few have been vocal about not really being too fond of the project. Some were left a bit disappointed, as they were expecting more hip-hop and R&B from an AOMG artist. The lack of “danceable” tracks was also a concern to some. Despite these criticisms, one thing was always mentioned; the girl has a beautiful voice and is obviously talented.

After listening to this EP, I hear a lot of potential. Being an EP with just five tracks, it definitely avoids overstaying its welcome. It’s brief enough to allow a listen through the entire project, no matter what you’re doing. My favorite tracks would have to be Show Me and EVITA!, but I found the whole project to be enjoyable. This EP is sprinkled with lovely vocal performances and simple but captivating production. I do still stand by my opinion that Movies would have fit better later in the tracklist if you’re chasing that mainstream ear.

I think the way EVITA! kicks you in the face, demanding attention, would’ve been a better fit as the opening track. In contrast to the other tracks, the energy level is unique, making the placement feel odd as the rest of the tracks have a chill vibe. All in all, this project gave me a taste of the “crème” but left me with a curious yearning for what this chef will whip up for dessert.

Bright future ahead

The addition of more female artists to the AOMG roster was much needed. Hoody was the first and only female member for about four years. This was the case up until late 2019, where she was then joined by sogumm, who had just won AOMG’s audition program called SignHere. Now funnily enough after DeVita, Lee Hi actually did end up officially signing with AOMG on July 22, last year.

Based on what I’ve heard during Devita’s Kollaboration days, she has improved immensely. This topped with her leaving the impression of someone passionate about their craft, bodes well for what's to come. She seems to be someone who'll constantly evolve.

Following an artist, at the early stages of their career, is something that I always find exciting. With such a lovely debut, I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for DeVita.

Today we have a Q&A with Lance Parkin, author of multiple Doctor Who novels and a contributor to Forgotten Lives. Lance’s story ‘Past Lives’ features the Camfield Doctor (who has a guest cameo in his novel Cold Fusion) and begins like this:

‘The Doctor sipped the y’bador, which was too hot, too sweet, left much too much of a sour aftertaste, and which he instantly fell in love with.

‘“Well, everywhere in the galaxy was affected,” the Commissioner replied. “You say ‘untouched’, but everywhere was touched.”

‘He sounded defensive. The Doctor smiled and nodded.’

FL: Tell us a little about yourself.

LP: I have gone from the child prodigy who wrote a Doctor Who novel to someone who needs a stiff upper lip to think that his debut novel is older now that its author was when he wrote it. Went from Doctor Who novels to storyliner on Emmerdale, managed to translate that into a complete lack of further TV career at the exact moment Doctor Who came back to TV. I’ve had a book published at least every year since, including biographies of Alan Moore (which I think is my best book so far, I’m probably not the person to ask) and Gene Roddenberry. Met a lot of very interesting people and had a lot of opportunities as a result.

FL: What attracted you to this project?

LP: Well … a long time ago, I wrote an article for a fanzine called Matrix, ‘Past Lives’, that suggested that if you look at all the evidence, especially The Brain of Morbius, then Hartnell is probably not the ‘first’ Doctor. There’s at least room for incarnations we don’t know about. This was, at the time, delicious heresy. It got a huge reaction, it was reprinted in Licence Denied, the Paul Cornell curated ‘best of the fanzines’ book that Virgin published. The appeal to me wasn’t just finding a loophole that broke the most basic fact of Doctor Who, it was that it opened up huge new vistas for the character, you didn’t have to imagine that everything that had happened in the Doctor’s past had happened to William Hartnell with slightly darker hair. So the appeal of this project is a bunch of people get together and show us some of that huge, hidden universe.

FL: These Doctors only exist in a couple of photos. How did you approach the characterisation of your incarnation?

LP: Mine’s ‘played’ by Douglas Camfield. Some of it is based on Camfield himself – he was notorious for planning everything very carefully, and having binders full of ideas for turning the script into a piece of television. So there’s a nod towards that. I slipped a flashback scene featuring the Camfield incarnation into my now-ancient Doctor Who Missing Adventure novel Cold Fusion, but only really picked Camfield because he had a beard, so I could go ‘the Doctor had a beard’ and everyone would realise it wasn’t one of the TV ones, but I do establish the Doctor’s married in that. I also tried to think about what the show would be like if it was modern Doctor Who but made in 1958 or whenever, I kept coming back to the idea of it being a sort of Graham Greene thing set in a world picking itself up from a devastating war. So what role does the Doctor have in that? I struggled with that at first.

FL: The stories are intended to represent a ‘prehistory’ of Doctor Who before 1963. How did that affect your approach?

LP: That’s the central paradox of this collection – how do you make this character recognisably ‘the Doctor’ but set it before the show starts? How do you have them work for the Time Lords but be a hero, not a lackey? A moral force, and experienced, but clearly not as developed as they become later? How do you fit it in with continuity – continuity that probably doesn’t let you say ‘Time Lord’? – but retain the joy of all this, which is that it’s a whole new space for Doctor Who stories sort of free from all that? How do you tell a short story that stands for and sets up a whole era? I wanted it to be a sort of pilot episode, or a teaser at least. I want people to wish they’d seen all 30 stories with this guy, not just this glimpse. As I was writing it, Paul Hanley put up his notes about his depiction of the Camfield Doctor, and said he saw this one as a sort of monster hunter, and that was sort of what I was doing, but he’d summed it up in two words, so that’s what crystallised it for me. So, to answer your question: he hunts monsters.

FL: What’s your story about?

LP: The Doctor glances across a tea room and sees an irredeemable monster. So what does he do?

FL: Who would be your ideal casting for a pre-Hartnell Doctor?

LP: I spent a lot of time thinking about this, then had a eureka moment and said ‘Peter Cushing!’, and slapped myself on the back, then about two seconds later I remembered that I wasn’t the first person to come up with that answer. Peter Cushing, but with the room to play it for the broader, older audience Doctor Who has now compared with 1965.

FL: What other projects are you working on at present?

LP: My next Doctor Who thing is, um, actually not sure what I can say. It’s a comic strip, but not an official one. Very proud of it. That was the thing I can say most about at the moment, unfortunately. I’m finishing up a novel called The Fourth Person, I have another called Cragside which is now on its fourth total redraft, and I’m working on a non-fiction project. It’s 25 years since my first Who novel was published, and I’m keeping busy as a writer, which is wonderful.

I’m Always Here For You - Yoongi x Ami (One-shot)

Synopsis: No matter the time, the distance, or the problem, Ami is certain to be by the side of Min Yoongi until the very end.

I’m Always Here For You - Yoongi x Ami [One-Shot]

“Yoongi?” They chimed, poking their head into the entryway of the apartment. There was no answer at first, and Ami’s brows furrowed together. “Yoongi? Are you home?” They called again. Now, stepping into the apartment, closing and locking the door, they scanned the area. This wouldn’t be the first the Ami was in the apartment when Yoongi was out working, however, they didn’t expect him to be out right now. He had just come back from vigorous preparation for their upcoming November album duties, such as filming the music video, preparing their teaser photos, and preparing the choreography for upcoming music show performances. Ami knew Yoongi’s schedule well, they made sure they did because they never wanted him to overwork himself when he did not have to. So, Ami decided to show up at the apartment and surprise him with dinner. “I brought some burgers,” Ami called out again, holding up the bag in their grip. Still, no answer. Sighing, Ami slid off their shoes and strode fully into the apartment.

Ami rested the bag of food on the table, with the intent that it would be eaten later. Finally, they headed towards the back of the apartment, towards the bedroom in the corner where Yoongi would spend his nights. As they walked over to the door, they knocked quickly. “Yoongi?” They finally called again. This time, instead of silence, they were met with a frustrated groan, a muffled one. They raised an eyebrow, opening the door and pushing it open. Upon entering the bedroom, they looked around it. The room, despite Yoongi never being around, needed some tidying up. The hamper in the corner was almost filled to the brim with clothes, so much so that a few random articles of clothes were laying on the floor beside it. Pictures of Yoongi and his bandmates decorated the corner dresser, spanning from pre-debut pictures to modern-day photos. Regardless of when the years were taken, nothing but chaotic love emanated through those pictures every time someone looked at them.

As Ami’s eyes finally laid onto Yoongi, they saw him curled up, shirtless under the covers of his bed. His back was to her as if he was just turned over in his sleep. As Ami walked over, they saw Yoongi’s hand draped over his shoulder, gripping it tightly. A small frown fell on Ami’s face. They knew exactly what was wrong.

“Is it your shoulder?” they asked softly, as they moved to sit on the side of the bed.

“Mhm…” Yoongi mumbled softly. “It started flaring up in the middle of dance practice.”

“Did you tell anyone?”

“I mentioned it during our break. Namjoon told me I could sit out and rest, but we were almost done, so there was no reason to stop.” Ami let out a soft sigh, Yoongi’s dedicated spirit never once being fanned out by pain.

“Did you at least take pain killers?” They asked softly. Yoongi nodded.

“A few hours ago.” He admitted.

“Do you want me to get some more?” Just as Ami was about to get up, Yoongi slowly sat up straight, alerting their attention back to him. He sighed, reaching his hand out to take their hand gently in his.

“Too soon…” he said. “Gimme a few more hours, then I’ll take another.” Ami didn’t look convinced, and Yoongi immediately noticed. He always immediately noticed. So, he lifted their hand to his lips, pressing it gently there in an attempt to reassure her. “Ami-ah, how many times do I need to say not to furrow your brows like that? You’ll get wrinkles at such a young age.” Ami could only laugh a little bit at his comment. “Just stay here with me, that’ll help enough.”

“Okay…” They hummed softly. Yoongi shifted in bed, his hand once again going up to rub his shoulder, wincing at the pain that was coursing through his veins. Ami sighed, deciding to move onto the bed, positioned so they were behind Yoongi, his back exposed to her. Yoongi tried to crane his head to see what on earth they were doing, only to watch as Ami rested their hand against the shoulder. The touch was gentle, almost non-existent, for fear of adding too much pressure and only increasing Yoongi’s ongoing pain. Their fingers gently glided up and down in that one spot, and Yoongi let out a soft sigh. “Am I hurting you?” Ami asked.

“No…” Yoongi said softly. “No, it’s kind of relaxing actually.” When he chuckled, Ami felt a smile across their lips. They gently leaned forward, pressing a gentle kiss to his shoulder. It was in no way to be erotic, in no way to do anything other than heal. All Ami wanted was to remove all of Yoongi’s pain with one, gentle kiss, and fill it with only love. A kiss could only do so much, however, so they peppered a few gentle ones in the same area. “Hm, that tickles, you know.” He said gently.

“Heh, I know,” Ami said softly, once against replacing their lips with a gentle touch. Since filled the room for a minute, and Ami could feel Yoongi’s once tense muscles finally begin to relax. “Have you ever thought of getting some surgery done?” They asked softly, eyes glancing up at the back of Yoongi’s head. A sigh escaped Yoongi’s lips, his body shaking a bit from the force of the exhale.

“I…go in for it in a few days. A bunch of doctors told me that I should get the surgery done sooner rather than later.” He said softly. Ami’s eyes widened slightly. “I was going to tell you, but I had to admit…I got a bit nervous.”

“Nervous? Why?” They hummed softly, hand now resting gently over his shoulder. Yoongi’s hand raised to overlap it, his thumb gliding over the back of Ami’s hand. “That’s great news. This could help you start to heal.”

“…I didn’t want you to be upset,” Yoongi said softly. You frowned a bit and saw Yoongi’s head drop just slightly. “Once this surgery is done, I won’t be able to promote the new album with everyone.” As Ami listened, Yoongi turned himself slightly to be able to look at them. “It’ll be the first time in 7 years I’ve done something like this.”

“Yoongi-ah…” Ami sighed softly, running a hand along with his black hair. “This is important. Everyone will understand, and everyone will support you.” Despite Ami’s words, they could see Yoongi’s eyes filled with guilt, filled with the idea that when fans turned on Inkigayo and Music Bank, only 6 of their 7 favorite boys would be ready to perform. “I know I will.” Yoongi chuckled a bit at that last comment, his head lolling slightly to rest in Ami’s comforting palm.

“I know.” He said. “I wish it didn’t have to come to this.”

“I know, but when you recover, every one of your fans will still be there to support and cheer you on anyway.” Yoongi didn’t respond, so Ami kept going. “You’ve already done a lot this entire year, even with everything going on. You released a whole second mixtape, you’ve done collaborations with wonderful artists, you performed online concerts, and you guys reached Billboard Hot 100 with a song! All this was during a global pandemic, let’s not start on all the promoting of the first comeback you made before that. You’ve done so much; you deserve to rest yourself.” Yoongi knew Ami was right, they always were when it mattered. “Besides, you had a wonderful life with everyone just recently.”

“I know. I wanted to play the guitar for everyone one more time before my surgery. Won’t be able to do much of anything for a while…” Yoongi carefully rolled his shoulder, and when he winced, Ami placed her hand quickly onto his shoulder. “Fuck…” He grumbled.

“Careful…” Ami gasped softly. Yoongi looked down at them, watching as their hand returned to its motion of rubbing his shoulder. He sighed, resting his head on Ami’s shoulder. A smile graced their lips, and they were quick to embrace Min Yoongi in a loving embrace.

“I’m sorry…” he said softly.

“Never apologize,” Ami assured quickly. The two of them sat in silence for a moment, continuing to enjoy their time with each other for now, while they had some time to share. So many instances recently had prevented them from seeing each other as much as they would have wanted, but they knew that distance only made the heart grow fonder. Just as they had for the past 7 years, Ami and Yoongi knew that they would be able to make it through whatever they needed to to be happy. “…Do you want to eat dinner?” Ami asked softly, running a hand through his hair. Yoongi sighed. “Afterwards, you get some rest and I’ll straighten things up for you around here.”

Yoongi immediately looked at the full hamper in the corner of his room. “Yeah, that sounds pretty good.” He said, lifting his head and running a hand through his slightly messy hair. Ami offered him a smile, standing up from the bed and gently taking his hand. Yoongi gently held it on his own, following Ami out the room. “…I love you…” Yoongi said softly.

Ami turned to him as she stood in the bedroom doorway, eyes slightly wide in the surprise of the sudden words. Yoongi was relatively closed off with his feelings, he wouldn’t often express them directly with words, but more so with actions. His desire to be held, to be comforted by Ami, the desire to work through his condition despite his better judgment because he knew the heartbreak it could give Ami, those were the ways he showed his love. Ami smiled a bit, gripping his hand tightly.

“I love you too, Min Yoongi~. I’ll be here for you for as long as you need me to be.

Ami intended to always be there, as Yoongi came home from his surgery, sleeping silently in his bed, his body flowing with pain killers, Ami was sure to stay nearby. Ami straightened up his clothes, cleaned up his home, made sure the rest of the members of BTS were doing well. Ami made sure that when Yoongi woke up, the only thing he needed to focus on was recovering in order to be the best he could be.

The 30 Day Tumblr Challenge

We are at it again bois.

Day 3 - My Favourite TV Show/Series

Okay so I don’t know why I’m excited to tell you my favourite shows. I definitely have a few of my favourites, also cartoon shows and anime if that counts lol

Okay starting off with:

1. OnMyBlock

You guys don’t understand how obsessed I am with this show!! This is one of my #1 favourites and now S2 is coming in a few days like holy shiit, feels like we been waiting forever. Watching the teaser and seeing Ruby opening his eyes at the end at me jumping 😂. I mean if they were thinking of not putting Ruby in S2 and he died then I ain’t watching S2. But can I say that Spooky is is fine as hell 😍 But anyway I recommend you guys go watch it, it’s da best, if you into that teen drama.

2. The Office

I love the Office, I always wanted to watch it from seeing memes on insta or Facebook all the time and now I finally got the chance too. It’s so funny and you just get every joke and just laugh. Also one good thing too is every episode is so entertaining and you don’t get bored. So if you wanting to find a new tv show to watch then come to this one. Another thing is that I love Michael’s personality, just trying to be the cool boss and even tho some episodes he can be annoying but then his very caring at the same time. Its cute how he finds everyone like a second family to him. Also can never get enough of Jim’s pranks on Dwight.

3. Black Mirror

Gotta say this is a pretty interesting tv series, I thought it would be one of those shows that just drag on but literally every episode is different and has its own story. I like how some of the episodes try to connect to the real world and what we do in our society. Also the fancy technology in this series sis pretty impressive but same time don’t want that type of technology being invented now lol I would have to say one of my favourite episode would have to be S4 Ep 4 - Hang the DJ. I was so confused at first and thinking the couple were trapped in some sort of game or world but at the end when it was them in a simulation for a actually a dating app, just blew my mind. That it was the process of the dating app to find the perfect match was really impressive. Also there’s a few keys points on how we work our dating life in the real world. But I was also happy there was a happy ending not like it is with Black Mirror. Another one of my favourite was S3 Ep1 - Nosedive just because I could relate to how we get sucked in the social media world and not in the real world. I more based on the you know you always wanting so many followers on social media and all these likes on your photos from people who you hardly hangout. Just seeing people or friends more higher then you, you kind of get that feeling you wish you were like that. Another thing too is now a days we see heaps and heaaappsss of fitness models that really hit you with ‘I want a body like that’ It kind of puts your self esteem down and trying to love your own body. I mean yes some models do help and motivate you to workout and all that but you gotta put in a lot of work and I’m just too lazy 😂

3. The End of the F***ing World

It’s a very unique show I must say. Even though James intention was to murder Alyssa in the first place but I still love the relationship between the two even though it was an unusual connection. But James came to fall in love with Alyssa eventually. If it weren’t for that creepy dude he murdered then we probably would of had a different story.

Okay now I’m getting into my favourite cartoon/anime shows

1. Tokyo Ghoul

One of my favourite anime series ever. Love a bit of action and gore which is what this series showed. Note that I’m not into the romantic animes, it kinda bores me. But honestly S3 was complete shit and was so confusing. Didn’t even connect with the last 2 seasons. But the other 2 seasons was 👌🏾 Noice.

2. Berserk

Listen if you want a bit of more gore and action then you should watch this. Love this show, literally finished it in a day and a half 😅. Guts is the main man and is probably my favourite character. But just a warning the ending is kinda fucked up and dark but I literally kept watching in confusion because it just escalated so quickly. I even read a few articles on what the ending meant but I’m still confused but overall still love the show. Was sad that everyone died suddenly expect Casca as one of the remake movies showed she survived but was obviously traumatised and lost her mind. Then had a demon baby which was fucked.

3. Rick & Morty

Gotta love this show man. Never knew I would like a show like this and understand all the humor 😂

4. Regular Show, Adventure Time & Amazing world of Gumball

If you don’t know what’s these shows are then GTFO! Jks but seriously these are pretty much the best cartoon shows ever, especially on Cartoon Network. Literally watch these shows growing up but I had a little sister that would watch these shows with me and our dad didn’t like it because of the crude humor and so on. So I haven’t watch these in awhile and going back to them is so nostalgic. It’s sad that these 3 shows had to end. I mean obviously a show gotta end somewhere but still. It won’t be the same :(

5. Love Death + Robots

I got to say this is a very interesting series. The animation was amazing but I was gobsmacked at the CGI which looked soooo realistic in some episodes. Literally finished it in a day. I mean yes it is a bit graphic but overall it was funny, dark and imaginative. But I do understand the sexual violence towards women in the series but at the end they got their revenge. But to say Sonnies Edge was probably my favourite episode and hope we can get a series happening or I’ll be disappointed haha.

Okayy I guess I’m done. Idk why I was so excited to talk about this topic for some reason. But tbh I’m not really a huge tv show fan as I mentioned before sometimes shows drag on and it gets really boring and I just move on to the next show. I mean these shows above are probably the only ones I enjoy the most out of every other show.

A good example of a show that drags on is Riverdale, literally. I hate this show so much and idk how people are still watching it. First season was really good then it just got worst. I mean is it just me or Veronica is really annoying and being with Archie is even worse.

Also another show that pissed me off was Shameless! ughhh really ticked me off when Debby eventually had the baby and the way she acts so stubborn literally fucked me right off. You know when you watch a show and it just doesn’t go the way it should and then you just stop watching. Also Game of Thrones, I’m that percent of people that hasn’t watch this shit at all. I recommend if you haven’t watch this show then don’t start because literally every episode is an hour and there’s like what, 20 odd episodes in the 6S. So good luck if you gonna start. But I did watch the first 2 episodes of S1 but it’s kinda weird with the brother sister thing lol I should just make a post of all the shows I hate and why 😂

But anywayyy sorry if this was soo long. Didn’t think it would be and it sucked because I couldn’t put more gifs in haha But if your feeling bored then recommended watching a few of these bad boys I have put down but if you have any that don’t drag on and are actually worth watching and not boring. Then please tell because I don’t want to start watching a show and then get disappointed during it.

Moore Kismet says of the single, “‘Rumor’ is a song that I started when I was 14, around the first time I publicly came out as an LGBTQ+ individual. I was receiving a lot of hatred and unkindness from people who I didn’t even know saying that I shouldn’t exist, that I should repent, that I was using my sexuality and gender identity for clout, and other horrible things. To make matters worse, when I tried coming out to my dad, he decided to give me a near 2 hour-long lecture about the “perks” of being straight and why being gay and trans is wrong. It ruptured our relationship in an irreparable way, but that feeling I had after that call and the feeling that I had from the comments I’d received is what inspired the song. When I hit up Madeleine (WYN), the lyrics and melodies that we wrote together brought a whole new meaning to the song. I’m so proud of what we’ve written together and the story that this song tells. I hope that anyone who listens to “Rumor” can find the strength within them to push past the hatred, the struggles, and the hardships. It gets better. It always will.”

Leaving Facebook Part III: Goodbye to All That

Remember what it was to be me: that is always the point.

I'm in the final countdown to deleting Facebook, and not a moment too soon.

I think we are well advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company or not.

The Wind-Down

I've backed up my data, I've collected contact info, and I've explored a variety of new platforms with varying degrees of success.

I've reached a tentative consensus on my plan for moving forward. It's a little more complex than I would have liked, but I'm settling into some new habits and I'll continue to iterate and refine over time. Here's where I've landed:

Nothing was irrevocable; everything was within reach. Just around every corner lay something curious and interesting, something I had never before seen or done or known about.

Consuming

I chose: Apple News. I slept on this for a while, for reasons I can't totally remember. I revisited it and spent some time customizing it and decided it's the best newsfeed for me for now.

Pros:

Free

UX is good and it's easy to follow publications/topics

iCloud syncing across devices + desktop app is hard to beat. The next best product I looked at (Thread News) only had a mobile app, which was a dealbreaker for me.

I follow mostly mainstream-is publications and there's a full database of sources that are easy to follow.

I haven't tried News+ yet but I like the option of it - a while ago I had a similar magazine aggregator from Conde Nast that I loved and this seems similar or better.

Cons:

Initially, I didn't like the Top Stories on the home page. I don't really love the CNN/ABC/CBS-type focus on 24-hour headline news and wish this was better curated from my interests and favorite publications. I finally figured out that you can limit the Home Page to publications that you follow, but it's not an obvious setting.

I hate that share/copy link produces an apple.news url instead of the native url; this is obnoxious.

Runner Up: Thread News had a really nice Daily Digest feature that curated from your favorite publications.

I chose: Pocket for random articles that I come across on Twitter, in Slack, or recommended through text messages, I save them to Pocket to read later.

Pros:

Free (with premium paid option)

Syncs across desktop, mobile, iPad app; app UX is nicely optimized across devices

Tagging (good for saving favorites)

"Article view" that clears out web junk for a streamlined reading experience

Chrome extension for easy clipping/adding

Cons:

None yet; it's simple and works the way I want it to

Runner up: Instapaper. It has very similar functionality to Pocket, I just slightly prefer the design of Pocket. If you like a really minimalist reading experience, Instapaper is for you.

Keepers of private notebooks are a different breed altogether, lonely and resistant rearrangers of things, anxious malcontents, children afflicted apparently at birth with some presentiment of loss.

Creating

This one was a beast. I struggled for weeks to parse out exactly what I wanted on this front and which criteria were most important to me, because it became clear quickly that I wasn't going to get everything I wanted in one place.

I chose: Tumblr I initially wrote this off because the homepage/discovery can be nauseating without the right default settings. A tour of the mobile version convinced me to give this a second look: the mobile app is great and the posting experience is (pardon the cliche) delightful. I decided to give it a deeper dive behind the scenes and found that I was able to customize a lot of what I initially disliked. The auto formatting for photo, quote, link, and chat posts is charming and simple.

Pros:

Customizing themes is simple and there are a lot of choices.

I can use my personal domain

The posting experience is easy and relatively error-free

The tagging! I love my tags and they work so nicely. I was also able to find a theme that features tags so you will always have easy access to the latest photos of Darwin.

Great for multimedia posting

Built-in share buttons

Cons:

Not very good at importing content from other platforms; I manually recreated a few favorite posts, but otherwise pretty much had to start from scratch on content

No built-in analytics, aside from follower counts, which is not something I expect to care about or track. I set up tracking on Google Analytics, but I'll miss the built-in analytics that WordPress had. Since WP bought Tumblr, I'm hoping that they may eventually add these features to Tumblr

I just don't care about the social/discovery components here and I wish I could turn them off

Ads. I wish I could pay to make them go away.

Runner up: micro.blog For the first couple of weeks, I thought this was going to be my choice. I had a solid experience importing and archiving a lot of my content from WordPress, Instagram, and Medium. Unfortunately, once I started trying to use the platform on a daily basis, I ran into a lot of issues and challenges that gave me pause on using and recommending the platform. To be clear, a good number of these issues were either user-error or bespoke preferences due to my personal quirks on how I want to organize and share content on the Internet. Some of this is a result of it being a new-ish platform that still has some blind spots for non-developers; it's not a mainstream product yet and I'm not sure it's trying to be. Based on my personal preferences, I felt Tumblr was slightly better equipped for my use case. I'm still going to keep using micro.blog for a while in tandem with Tumblr to see if my preferences change and/or if the platform adopts some of the feedback I shared with regard to cross-posting and UX.

I chose: Drafts. One big challenge for me in this process was the desire to cross-post some content in multiple places while limiting where I post other content. I didn't want to fill my Twitter feed with cat pictures, but I wanted some little corner of the Internet for Darwin's biggest fans (my mother). Drafts is basically a universal text editor that pushes drafts of text to a variety of services, including micro.blog, Twitter, Day One, Google Drive, Evernote, WordPress, Gmail, and even text messages. It's highly configurable and I'm only just scratching the surface of its power. Creating text drafts here allows me to easily push drafts to a variety of different places with just a few keystrokes. It syncs with iCloud, has really robust tagging and filtering, and has mobile, iPad, and Mac apps. It's very cool.

Engagement

I chose: Twitter I've increasingly found Twitter to be a place where my friends/followers care about what I care about. The messages I care most about sharing are amplified. I can choose to unfollow, mute, or block people who are harassing or distressing me. I can follow people whose expertise I value. It can still be a cesspool at times but Twitter leadership seems to be taking steps to improve the platform - identifying misinformation, a conversation feature that limits replies, etc. For now, it stays.

Coming Soon: Substack I haven't officially started this yet, but I'm going to start a monthly newsletter that (allegedly) goes out the first Sunday of every month. I'm going to use roughly my annual Life Olympics format except there will be fun and exciting recommendations. Weekly Recap #6 (December 4 - December 10)

First things first, we want to announce that the Golden Disk Awards 2018 will now be held in Seoul and not in the Philippines. For the ONCEs who have already paid for their tickets, look out for the refund information from All Access Production. An official statement from AAP can be found below.

Now, onto the recap! With the release date coming closer, more and more teasers have been released. In addition to their busy schedule, the girls are building on their year with more records and award show nominations!

Here’s what happened this week:

December 4, 2017 - As the week began, JYP Entertainment gave us the M/V Teaser for “Heart Shaker” on Naver V-Live! Before the day came to an end, the teaser reached an astonishing 1,000,000 views! Twelve hours after the original release, the teaser was finally uploaded to YouTube.

The girls were also nominated for the 9th Philippines Kpop Awards for Best Female Group, Song of the Year (for “Likey”), and Album of the Year (for Twicetagram)! Voting has already begun!

Lastly, “Likey” re-entered the top 5 on the Instiz iChart!

December 5, 2017 – As the clock struck midnight, JYP Entertainment released the first Photo Parade for Merry & Happy, which featured Christmas-themed photos. Billboard also mentioned the album in an article.

“Likey” continued its streak on Billboard Japan’s HOT BUZZ SONG Chart, taking the #1 spot for the 4th consecutive week. Meanwhile, “TT” continued to stay strong, coming in at 7th for the second week in a row. “Knock Knock” also entered the Top 10 most-streamed songs from major streaming sites in Korea. At 9th place, it was also the only idol group song in the top 10.

TWICE was also selected as one of the winners of the 2017 Oricon Queen Award.

December 6, 2017 – JYP Entertainment continued to release more Photo Parades, this time with individual shots! TWICE TV6’s 9th episode was also released through V-Live!

TWICE was nominated for Best Female Group and Best Choreography for the International K-Music Awards 2017! The girls were also featured in the SBS Gayo Daejun teaser dancing to various groups’ songs!

TWICE is also revealed to have shot with Cosmopolitan once again!

As many ONCEs have been hoping for, the girls will FINALLY perform a b-side track once again! It was revealed that along with “Heart Shaker,” the girls will be performing “Merry & Happy” on music shows as well. Later in the day, the girls appeared on MBS FM4U Tei’s Dream Radio, where they talked about the most random things and held a mini award show! They also performed “Sleep Tight, Good Night,” featuring Nayeon and Sana’s goofy narration.

December 7, 2017 – The day started out with the release of the lyrics for “Heart Shaker” as well as the album packaging!

YouTube Korea released their annual “Most Popular Music Video” for 2017, and “Knock Knock” and “Signal” came in at number 1 and 2, respectively. TWICE’s Twicetagram album was revealed to be the ONLY girl group album to be included in the top 10 Best Selling Albums of 2017. The music video for “TT” surpassed 293,000,000 views on YouTube, getting so ever closer to the coveted 300,000,000!

December 8, 2017 – Fans were surprised when JYP Entertainment decided to release the M/V Behind video for “Heart Shaker.” Additionally, more behind the scenes photos were released through Naver Star Cast.

“Likey” made a sudden rise to number 2 on MelOn. “Likey,” “TT,” “One More Time,” and “Signal” all charted on Billboard Japan, coming in at numbers 9, 30, 39 and 74, respectively. “Likey” also topped Billboard PH’s Top 5 this week, while “Like Ooh Ahh” came in at 5th. “Likey” also came in at number 16 on theBillboard PH HOT 100.

TWICE came in at 3rd for Top Artist and “TT” at number 6 in the HOT 100 for Billboard Japan’s Year End Rankings for 2017. The girls were also nominated in the Golden Disk Awards 2018 in both the Digital Song of the Year (”Knock Knock”) and Album of the Year (Twicetagram).

The girls (minus for Chaeyoung and Tzuyu, who are still minors) watched Park JinYoung’s 19+ only concert Naughty Party 2017. JY Park also expressed that he was uncomfortable doing the sexy stages as he knew the girls were present.

Music producer Angerwolf also teased a potential new song for the girls through his twitter account (@DjAngerWolf). There has not been a confirmation regarding the rumor.

December 9, 2017 – 2 days before the release, the Jacket Behind for Merry & Happy was released! The girls also topped the December Girl Group Brand Reputation rankings and came in 3rd for Billboard Japan’s Top Artist.

The 10th installment of TWICE TV6 was also released.

Some ONCEs have also received their 2018 TWICEstar Season’s Greetings! The girls held their LG V30 fansign, and when it ended, they went directly to their TWICE Store fansign! Speaking of the TWICE Store, the group released a new jacket, and Chaeyoung even wore it to the fansign!

December 10, 2017 – With only one day left until the release, JYP Entertainment released a 1 minute preview for both “Heart Shaker” AND “Merry & Happy!” The video featured the girls’ photos from their two Photo Parades.

TWICE is also confirmed to attend SBS Gayo Daejun as part of the first line-up that was released! “TT” was then ranked at number 5 of Girl Group Dance ranking on MBC Section TV Entertainment Show!

I’m really interested to know what you all will think of 3x17... we worked really hard on it and it reveals a lot about Jonathan.

It’s movie season! Now just imagine me saying that with the energy of Bugs and Daffy shouting, “Duck season! Rabbit season!” back and forth, and you’ll have an idea of the pop culture binge December becomes for me every year:

Between end-of-the-year Oscar contenders, Christmas classics, and time off that actually lets me do some reading, December turns into a glut of Crowd and Critic favorites. So here’s my gift to you…a full tree skirt’s worth of recommendations to stick under that brightly lit, fully-ornamented tree of yours in the order I experienced them.

December Crowd-Pleasers

Season 2 of Jack Ryan

Because it’s Movie Season(! Rabbit Season!), I’ve been slow to watch new seasons of prestige shows that have dropped recently, but I wrapped up Jack Ryan’s latest adventure in Venezuela and its twists are filling the 24-shaped hole in my heart.

Christmas Classics: It Happened on Fifth Avenue (1947) and Happy Holidays with Bing & Frank (1957)

In the ‘40s movie, A hobo takes up annual residence in a millionaire’s home every year at Christmas while he’s away—complications and hilarity ensue. In the ‘50s special episode of The Frank Sinatra Show, Bing Crosby shows up at Frank Sinatra’s TV set residence for a half hour of Christmas carols—crooning and playful razzing ensue. Neither are well-known, but they’re fun (and free on streaming) classics to add to your holiday rotation.

Pablo Hidalgo’s Many Revelations About The Last Jedi at Comic Con Chile

Pablo Hidalgo, he of the witty Tweets wrecking Reywalker (exhibit 1), cat lover and Lucasfilm Story Group top banana, was recently at Comic Con Chile for a panel called “Mysteries of Star Wars”. One of our Spanish-speaking members from Reylo Skyforum has made a recap/translation of the panel. Behold the wisdom gleaned from this video.

Pablo (PH) opened by revealing that he wrote the captions that appear under the Annie Leibovitz photos in the Vanity Fair spotlight of The Last Jedi. He went on to scroll through the photos and added commentary about the characters and filming process as follows:

About Kylo Ren:

“Here are the bad guys in The Last Jedi - Kylo of course, carrying the scar that he got from Rey. Kylo has a lot to prove. Even though the First Order was successful in a lot of what it did in TFA, you can't forget that Kylo was defeated by a newcomer. The Last Jedi starts off right where TFA ended, and he has to go visit his boss. We can all imagine how that's gonna turn out."

Audience member question: “Does Kylo Ren know that Darth Vader turned good in the end?” PH: “I think Luke would have told him. He may only have heard a certain side of the story from someone else, and he decided to choose what he chose to believe.”

About Luke/Mark Hamill:

Luke's gloved hand is touching "an ancient Jedi book" in the trailer.

Ahch-To is the site of the first Jedi temple, but the stone hut featured behind Rey and Luke in the VF picture is not a temple. PH: "The island is home to caretakers, and these aliens live in those huts - so Luke hasn't been entirely alone."

“The space siblings (Luke and Leia) have moments (in The Last Jedi) as well.”

Audience member question: “What can you say about Mark Hamill's displeasure with the creative direction of Lucasfilm? He has talked about this in a lot of articles.” PH: “Mark has been quoted out of context. He said he had disagreements with how his character was shown because he didn't think it was going to work out, but then he said ‘I was happy to be proven wrong.’ I think that Mark gives an amazing performance in TLJ and he has nothing but incredible things to say about Rian Johnson. I think any reports about him being unhappy are probably being framed that way for some reason.”

Rey has inherited Anakin's saber and the pilot's seat in the Millennium Falcon, and Chewbacca is a loyal co-pilot.

Rian Johnson went to Skellig Michael to film the continuation of Luke and Rey’s meeting scene for start of The Last Jedi about 2 weeks after JJ wrapped up filming the end of TFA - so before TFA was released.

Audience member question: “Did Carrie's death affect The Last Jedi?” PH answer: “No, because she had already completed her part in its entirety. It did create a challenge for Colin in episode 9, because we all wanted her to feature quite prominently in it, but that can't happen anymore. We are evolving the story from the loss of that, to tell us where it should go.”

About the Force:

“If the Jedi have existed for thousands of years, they would have explored all aspects of how the Force works, from the spiritual to the biological. Only thinking of one side of the equation is an incomplete understanding.”

General Star Wars questions from the audience:

“Was Anakin Skywalker created by Darth Plagueis? PH: “All clues point to yes. This is just a theory, everyone can believe what they want; I think Sidious and Plagueis tried to provoke the creation of The Chosen One so that they could control it, and it didn't work out.

“Did Palpatine have any involvement in Padme's death?” PH: “You can theorize about it; I doubt we're ever going to get any more detail as to exactly how she died. That is a story George presented and we'll leave it as is in the movie.

“Did Palpatine influence Anakin's dreams?” PH doesn't think so. “He is a fearful person, and Palpatine took advantage of it.”

“How did you guys get over the criticism of the PT?” (lol) PH: “Lots of kids love the PT. That generation will get a chance to get out of the shadow of the previous generation. Then they also have to deal with the next generation, who have staked out episode 7, 8 and whatever comes next as THEIR Star Wars. That's healthy.”

“Is Return of the Jedi plural or singular? PH: “People should figure it out for themselves, it's magical that we're still arguing about what it means 30 years later. This is like our religion and we are not done studying it; it doesn't matter what I think about that, it matters what you believe."

“Is Jango Fett Mandalorian or just a mercenary wearing Mandalorian armor?” PH: “All we have to go by is Prime Minister Almec's word. if Jango is Mandalorian he has to be of such shaky standing that someone like Almec can say "No he's not," but there's more to come about this.”

“Are you going to make movies about the survivors from Order 66?” PH: “The era of the early Empire while Jedi were being hunted is an area of storytelling we're interested in. We just launched a new Darth Vader comic series that takes place right during that era. We're not done telling those stories, so it's always a possibility.”

“We saw Mace Windu fly out the window but we never saw his corpse. Is he alive or dead?” PH: “Depends on who you ask. Sam Jackson says he's alive and well, and I don't want to argue with Sam Jackson.”

PH: “Dave Filoni wants to do something special with stories he didn't get a chance to tell. I'll leave that for him to describe.”

“Is Disney interested in doing films about the Old Republic era?” PH: Creative direction for Star Wars is under Lucasfilm - we are always looking along the timeline to see what stories to develop, if we find a filmmaker passionate about that era we may consider it but for now the story is told through the video games.”

“There's a rumor that the First Order will fight against an external galactic threat like the Yuuzhan Vong; will there be something like the YV in the Sequel Trilogy?” PH: The First Order has its hands full trying to take over the known galaxy... The Yuuzhan Vong where going to appear in Clone Wars, they were going to be different than what we read in the books, and it was going to be mysterious aliens encountered by the Jedi - but it was never produced. In our mind there is a version out there where the Jedi encounter Yuuzhan Vong.”

“What do you think about the "Jar Jar is evil" theory?” PH: “Poor guy, he's been through so much but still has a heart of gold.”

As discussed in our podcast analyzing the The Last Jedi teaser trailer, we believe events shown in the teaser will be occurring in the first 1/3 of The Last Jedi. Pablo’s comments about continuity and Kylo having something to prove after just being defeated support that. Don’t expect to see Kylo Ren appeased at the start of TLJ, he will probably be a hot mess. (Hot because he’s attractive, get it? u_u)

The picture of Rey and Chewbacca in Vanity Fair + Pablo’s brief comment about Rey inheriting the Millennium Falcon and a loyal co-pilot in Chewie point to her eventually leaving Ahch-To in The Last Jedi. Some have speculated she will probably spend the entirety of the film on the island, but we disagree.

We are relieved and thanking the Maker after hearing Pablo say “WE are evolving the story (episode 9)” - it’s not just riding on Colin Trevorrow’s shoulders (sorry, Colin). This should also be reassuring in light of PlotGATE: the filmmaker has freedom, but Lucasfilm is always a part of the process.

They have more Princess Leia stories to tell! And Claudia Grey is involved, huzzah!

The Last Jedi Trailer - A Shot-by-Shot, Spoiler-Filled Breakdown

Okay, I can tell that I’m going to get no peace until I’ve got this out of my system, so I’m going to aim to do a shot-by-shot breakdown of the brand-new and absolutely flipping fantastic Last Jedi teaser trailer.

This breakdown will be heavily informed by spoilers from sites such as Making Star Wars, and I cannot stress it enough that you should not proceed if you want to remain pure.

(n.b. I don’t touch upon the dialogue here - none of it is part of the scenes shown, and the dialogue really deserves a breakdown of its own.)

With that said, proceed to the breakdown - if you dare...

Shot #1 - Rey appears to have just come out of the small cave behind her. She’s distressed and overcome by what she has experienced. She is still in her Resistance outfit and has the three buns hairstyle (from toy packaging, we know that she later has long hair with a single bun and different clothes). I’m guessing this is a shot from the first act, just after Rey has her equivalent of Luke’s vision of beheading Vader in the cave from ESB.

Shot #2 - A lovely establishing shot of Ahch-To as the sun sets. My guess is that this is an establishing shot used to set the mood for the sequence where Kylo and his cohorts pay Rey and Luke a visit.

Shot #3 - Another Ahch-To establishing shot. It wouldn’t surprise me if this is one of the first shots in the film, as the colour grading reminds me of that of the final scene of The Force Awakens.

Shot #4 - Rey facing the sea on Ahch-To. She seems to be tense, as if she’s preparing for something. My guess is that she knows Kylo is coming, and is preparing herself for his arrival and the inevitable battle. The fight takes place at dusk, according to reports, which matches well with the darkening sky seen here. Some people have speculated that this is tied to the scene where Rey fights a sea monster, but I find this unlikely since MSW have reported that she wears a black cloak for said sequence. This is presumably the black cloak/poncho Rey is seen in below:

Shot #5 - A training shot of Rey levitating rocks. This again seems to be from early in the film, since the sleeve belongs to Rey’s Resistance outfit.

Shot #6 - I’m 99% sure this is Leia (seen from the back) at some kind of Resistance command centre. The silhouette, intriguingly, calls to mind far more sinister imagery - in particular, the silhouettes of her father Darth Vader and her son Kylo Ren. It’s possible that this is about her acknowledging her dark-side lineage through her clothing, in the sense that she’s not denying it anymore (I don’t for a moment think Leia is turning to the dark side in this movie) - I expect there to be a general theme of characters learning about their lineage and coming to embrace it, rather than suppress it. (Remember Lor San Tekka’s “you cannot deny the truth that is your family” line? I think that’s going to prove highly prescient.) Her costume here seems to be a good match for what Carrie is wearing in this behind-the-scenes shot shown during the panel:

Shot #7 - As far as I’m concerned, this is one of the most intriguing shots in the trailer. Kylo’s mask has been shattered, and is surrounded by shards of broken glass. You can also see smoke curling up from the fragments, indicating that the mask was attacked with a lightsaber or a blaster. Since Kylo’s mask was left on the bridge in TFA, this is presumably the upgraded or modified version brought up by MSW here. The glass suggests to me that the helmet might have been kept in some kind of display case, perhaps being perceived as a relic of an ancient Force user. It certainly points against its having been in regular use. The fact that the helmet has been shattered into fragments might - and I really mean might - represent Kylo abandoning the mask for good, especially if it comes to pass that he rejects Snoke and the First Order and decides to fashion a new identity for himself.

I have also seen it suggested that the destruction of the mask could indicate that Kylo rejects the mask because he now considers himself to be a stable embodiment of darkness, and no longer needs to wear a mask to affect evil. I don’t agree with this interpretation, the main reason being that Kylo has previously been shown to attack/destroy things when he is in a state of heightened rage or distress (e.g. attacking the console when he learns the droid has escaped/attacking the interrogation chair when he learns that Rey is gone). The mask represents and embodies the Kylo Ren persona, so - as far as I’m concerned - an attack on the mask represents an attack on Kylo Ren himself. This reminds me of an old comment Adam Driver made to Larry King. When asked if Kylo Ren survived The Last Jedi, Adam replied "Depends on what your idea of living is” - based on that, my bet is currently on Kylo Ren’s death and Ben Solo’s return.

Shot #8 - This appears to be the interior of the tree on Ahch-To, which can be seen clearly in the behind-the-scenes shot of the Longcross backlot below. Inside the tree is a collection of books. We know from the EU that Luke has been hunting for lore on the Jedi and the Force ever since ROTJ ended. It wouldn’t surprise me if these books represent Luke’s most significant find - the Dead Sea Scrolls of the Force. In relation to this, I strongly recommend reading the recent Star Wars News Net article on Luke’s lore-hunting adventures, and the dramatic and transformative impact of what he discovers. The spoilers we have about the importance of ancient lore to this movie - along with Luke’s “it’s time for the Jedi to end” line - offer strong support to the idea that Luke discovered something massive about the nature of the Force that caused him to completely modify his understanding of it and lose his faith in the righteousness of the Jedi.

Shot #9 - This is presumably what’s inside one of the books previously shown. It reminds me of two things - the star maps that Empire’s End keeps on harping on about (please see @holocroning’s excellent post on this for more info), and the symbol of the Jedi Order. I’m guessing that this manuscript in particular is the key to ancient knowledge of the Force that turns Luke’s world upside down and causes him to reassess everything he thought he knew. The owner of the gloved hand is unknown, but it’s possible that it’s Luke (given that he would presumably need a glove to cover his mechanical hand).

Shot #10 - Luke is seen training Rey on the cliffside on Ahch-To. Again, it appears to be first act stuff, going by Rey’s silhouette. As others have pointed out, zooming in on the image reveals what seems to be a tiny figure perched atop the tall rock beside Rey. It’s well within the realm of possibility that this figure is Yoda’s Force ghost, participating in the supervision of Rey’s training. (Frank Oz has previously strongly indicated that he’s part of The Last Jedi, so this is really no surprise.)

Shot #11 - This is Crait, the Resistance planet recently discussed by Making Star Wars in a spoiler report. The Resistance ships are flying towards the AT-ATs (most likely the gorilla-esque ones described by Making Star Wars here) seen far in the distance. The ships appear to be splitting open the earth to release the brilliant red gas contained beneath the surface. Location filming for this was done on salt flats in Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia. Rian Johnson cleared up what’s going on here in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“It’s way out there. It’s very remote. It’s uncharted,” says Johnson. “It’s a mineral planet and so there are mines on it.” The director (previously best known for Brick and Looper) noted how there are some “beautiful design elements and I hope some really unique ones that we’re able to bring into it.”

The shot of these small ships darting toward gigantic walkers mimics the snowy Hoth battle sequence from The Empire Strikes Back, but this white crust is salt. “The white dusting of salt over this red, ruby-ish mineral base,” he says.

According to Johnson, Crait is the site of an “an old rebel base there that’s now abandoned” and the planet was one of the first things he had in mind when planning The Last Jedi.

“It ends up playing a key role in the movie,” he says, adding that the Resistance fighters — flying in the skimmers seen in the trailer — “show up where they have to deal with a very pressing and immediate threat.”

Shot #12 - This is Finn in his recovery suit. This is pretty much guaranteed to be a shot from right at the start of the film, when we see him recovering from his injuries. Making Star Wars describe this scene here.

Shot #13 - This is clearly a Resistance outpost (in SPAAAAAAACE) under attack. Poe and BB-8 run towards the danger as others run away. I’m guessing the Resistance start the movie here, having abandoned D’Qar. Poe, going by his flight suit, is presumably running to get to his ship...

Shot #14 - ... only to encounter a little trouble when said ship is blown up in front of him. MSW have recently discussed how Poe has an upgraded X-wing in The Last Jedi, and this shot does a good job of summarising why he had an excuse to get an upgrade.

Shot #15 - This appears to be the Millennium Falcon taking down First Order TIE fighters. The most interesting thing here is the setting - you can see the sea here, so I’m pretty confident that this shot shows a battle in the skies of Ahch-To (though it’s also possible that it might be Canto Bight (the planet/city represented by the location filming in Dubrovnik), which we know is on the coast). If this does happen in the skies above Ahch-To, I’m guessing this sequence is nothing to do with Kylo Ren’s arrival, which appears to happen as the sun is going down and darkness is closing in. I could see this shot representing the First Order storming the planet after Kylo Ren’s defeat/capture, but that is largely my conjecture.

Shot #16 - Notice the dark sky again here - my bet is on this showing Rey heading in to fight Kylo Ren after he arrives on the island. Again, Rey is still in her Resistance gear, which supports our pre-existing belief that the Kylo/Rey battle takes place in the first act.

Shot #17 - MA BOY. Kylo is obviously looking very menacing right here. I also find it interesting that he looks exhausted, as if he hasn’t slept for days (a state Celebration attendees can probably empathise with). It wouldn’t surprise me if he chases after Rey as soon as he is sufficiently recovered to move, but isn’t recovered/prepared enough to face both Rey and his uncle. There is a huge blaze behind him. MSW have speculated about Kylo setting the tree on Ahch-To on fire, and while I wasn’t sold on that before I now think that’s more likely to be the case. I’m becoming more convinced that there’s going to be a substantial time skip between act one and act two of the movie, with the burnt-out tree representing the passage of time (along with Rey’s change in costume/hairstyle).

Kylo turns his lightsaber slightly here as if he’s making a demonstration/taking a stand. I expect this shot will probably precede a highly dramatic confrontation with Luke and/or Rey.

However, it’s also worth nothing that there’s something very odd going on with Kylo’s scar here, and that is that it seems to be in a different place from where it is seen in other shots of him in The Last Jedi. In this screencap, the scar bisects Kylo’s eyebrow. In other shots (see below), it seems to be more above his nose, which is more accurate to the position of the lightsaber strike in The Force Awakens. It’s possible that the image of Kylo above is actually from some heightened, anticipatory vision, where Rey imagines an almost demonic Kylo chasing her to Ahch-To to take his vengeance. It’s also possible that the screencap shows Kylo back at the destruction of Luke’s temple, which we know was set aflame. (All wild theories aside, it’s also possible it’s just a continuity error.)

Shot #18 - This proves that we’re returning to the moment from the vision in The Force Awakens where Luke places his hand on R2. Luke appears to have sunk to his knees besides R2, presumably heartbroken upon discovering that his temple has been burnt and his students murdered. The scale of the destruction here says to me that this is not a one-man job. I don’t believe Kylo pulled this off alone - there was either some kind of large-scale student mutiny or Kylo had the firepower of the First Order behind him.

Shot #19 - Phasma is shown storming (what I guess is) a Resistance base with a squad of what I’m assuming are the Executioner Stormtroopers described here by MSW. I expect that this is a continuation of shot #14, serving as a parallel to Vader sweeping into Hoth just after the Rebels have abandoned the outpost.

Shots #20 and 21 - These shots seem to tie into a recent Making Star Wars spoiler report on Laura Dern’s character, which reveals that she is a fashionista/Resistance Admiral (named ‘Holdo’). MSW describe the ships and the battle they’re involved in as follows:

However it also sounds like the new Resistance ships [Admiral Holdo] brings to the fleet are formidable. They’re sort of an abstract design but they have ball turrets on them just like the Low Altitude Assault Transports from Attack of the Clones. Supposedly you can see the Resistance fighters in them as they blast TIEs and go up against Supreme Leader Snoke’s Mega Destroyer.

Shot #22 - This shot appears to be from the interior of the cave that we see the exterior of in shot #1, and may be part of the same scene. When you alter the contrast of this screencap, it becomes clear that this shot shows the interior of a tree rather than the rocky walls of a cave - that makes it likely that its the same location as the one with the library with ancient manuscripts seen in shot #8. You can also see Rey's staff leaning against the wall, which suggests that Luke is probably looking back at her. Luke has clearly changed his costume from what he was wearing at the end of The Force Awakens - the costume appears to be more practical than the quasi-ceremonial robes he was wearing at the end of TFA and will be wearing at the start of TLJ, which suggests that some time must pass between the start of TLJ and this scene.
