hey! i would really appreciate if everyone who sees this gets educated about whats happening in my country
haven't been posting here because i'm tired and scared. my country (serbia) is protesting against the corrupt goverment after 15 people died when a roof of a train station fell on their heads and the goverment is refusing to take responsibility. it turned into masssive protests led by students who are blocking the streets, stopping and being silent for 15 minutes (to honor the 15 victims) and blocking the schools while not attending classes. things are getting messier and messier each day now with high school seniors standing up as well, the police brutally beating up the protesters and even throwing petards at LITERAL ADOLESCENTS. i've been busy with joining the protests, helping my fellow classmates with the organisation at school, but mostly, this whole thing is having a pretty bad impact on my mental health. we have no idea whats going to happen. i haven't really been in the mood to draw lately, but i will soon be back with more art i promise <3

Mass student protests erupt in Belgrade
Students from universities across Serbia staged a mass protest in front of the state broadcaster, Radio and Television of Serbia (RTS), bne IntelliNews reported.
The protesters blocked movement in the centre of Belgrade and interrupted the evening news broadcast of RTS on Thursday. The student protests are part of a wider wave of dissent sweeping Serbia following the Novi Sad train station collapse on 1 November. The tragedy killed 15 people and seriously injured two others.
The students accused the government of corruption, mismanagement and failure to address systemic challenges revealed by the disaster. By late afternoon, the demonstrators grew louder in an attempt to disrupt the 19:30 news programme. The students claimed that RTS had failed to provide fair coverage of their protests and alleged that the broadcaster was spreading misinformation about their activities.
On 8 December, several farmers’ associations met in Badovinci in the west of the country to announce their intention to join the protests, expressing solidarity with the students and others.
The farmers express their full support to the students and their demands, as well as to all dissatisfied citizens who demand the government’s responsibility.
University blockades spread across Serbia, with more than 40 state faculties halting work. President Aleksandar Vučić tried to quell the unrest by promising to fulfil all student demands and calling for a halt to the protests. He also announced a 20-per-cent increase in funding for higher education institutions by 2025 on Thursday.
Key demands of the protesters included the publication of documents related to the reconstruction of the train station, which Vučić promised to do on 11 December, as well as the release of detained protesters. With farmers and other movement groups joining in, the coming weeks are likely to test the government’s ability to deal with public discontent.

🇷🇸🇽🇰 SERBIAN PRESIDENT ALEKSANDAR VUCIC ASKS NATO TO TAKE OVER POLICING IN NORTHERN KOSOVO
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic met with the ambassadors of five Western countries and the EU in Belgrade on Tuesday, Sept 26th where he demanded the NATO Kosovo Forces (KFOR) take over, "all the Security matters in the North of Kosovo instead of (Kosovo Prime Minister) Kurti's Police.
The demand comes just one day after a major gun battle ensued in the village of Banjska in Kosovo on Sunday. A group of 30 Militant Serbs ambushed a Kosovo Police Unit, resulting in the death of a Police Officer along with multiple attackers and ending with an hours long standoff in a local Monastery.
The shootout marked one of the deadliest episodes since Kosovo declared independence from Serbia with Western support in 2008. Western leaders had been looking to normalize ties between the two countries, but so far have seen little success.
KFOR Forces currently number 4'500 soldiers stationed in Kosovo.

The EU Doesn’t Know How to Not Be a Vassal of the US Anymore
Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson has tried to show Americans how Washington has exploited Western Europe
— Bradley Blankenship | RT | August 22, 2023

Tucker Carlson, of Fox News fame, recently met with Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic in Budapest, Hungary. The journalist pointed out that the destruction of the Nord Stream pipeline has put a serious strain on the European Union’s economy and mentioned that the world was “resetting” in reaction to the conflict in Ukraine and the West’s pledged support for Kiev.
Carlson raises some good issues, and an important one to expand upon is the fact that the EU economy is lagging significantly since the outbreak of the war last year. A June piece by the Financial Times titled ‘Europe has fallen behind America and the gap is growing’ details how the EU is now considerably dependent on the US for its technological, security, and economic needs.
In terms of hard numbers, Jeremy Shapiro and Jana Puglierin of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) think tank have stated: “In 2008, the EU’s economy was somewhat larger than America’s: $16.2tn versus $14.7tn. By 2022, the US economy had grown to $25tn, whereas the EU and the UK together had only reached $19.8tn. America’s economy is now nearly one-third bigger. It is more than 50 per cent larger than the EU without the UK.”
The article goes on to describe a European Union that is dragging far behind the US and China in terms of quality universities, a less-than-pristine start-up environment, and lacking key benefits from its transatlantic peer – namely cheap energy. The Ukraine conflict has impacted the latter to the point that EU companies are paying three or four times what their American competitors are, with Washington being energy-independent and enjoying great domestic supplies. Meanwhile, energy from Russia is waning, European factories are closing in droves, and industry leaders are worried about the region’s future competitiveness.
The ECFR issued its own report on the matter in April, which is far blunter in describing the situation as a kind of “vassalization.” The summary of that report notes that the Ukraine war has exposed the EU’s key dependencies on the US, that over the course of a decade, the bloc has fallen behind the US in virtually every key metric, that it is deadlocked in disagreement and is looking to Washington for leadership.
The ECFR noted two causes for this situation. Firstly, despite the widely understood decline of the US compared to the rise of China, the transatlantic relationship has been unbalanced in Washington’s favor over the last 15 years since the 2008 financial crisis. The Biden administration is keen to exploit this and assert itself in the face of a disjointed Europe. Secondly, no one in the EU knows what greater strategic autonomy could look like – let alone agree on it if they did. There exists no process to decide the EU’s future in an autonomous way given the current status quo, which means US leadership is necessary.
This paints quite an interesting picture. Many commentators, including myself, have long documented the decline of the US and attributed it to a number of factors: less of an attractive environment for foreign direct investment (FDI), financial instability, corruption, and internal political turmoil. This is, of course, relativized to China, which has seen immense economic growth since the founding of the People’s Republic and particularly over the past four decades. But under the smoke screen of a fumbling America and a growing China, the EU has likewise fallen in stature.
The Western Establishment just gave itself a ‘World Peace and Liberty’ Award! Ursula von der Leyen received the ‘Judicial Equivalent’. The Western Establishment just gave itself a ‘World Peace and Liberty’ Award. Ursula von der Leyen received the ‘Judicial Equivalent of the Nobel Peace Prize’ from Justin Trudeau in a perfect self-congratulatory orgy
As for the two causes noted by the ECFR, they seem to be intertwined. Many of the key issues that have faced the EU, from migration to the banking crisis to Covid-19, have stemmed directly from the non-federal nature of the EU. And the current political crises are a result of Euroskepticism, i.e. a backlash against what is perceived as an overreach from Brussels by some political organizations within the bloc. The EU is a complicated and sometimes cumbersome bureaucracy that is cherished by some, reviled by others, and, under these assumptions, is an impediment to strategic autonomy.
The ECFR essentially argues for the EU and Western European capitals to lean into the transatlantic partnership, but on terms favorable to themselves. This includes creating an independent security architecture within and complimentary to NATO, creating an economic NATO of sorts and even pursuing a European nuclear weapons program. At least the former two are acceptable, as abandoning the US outright would be politically foolish for the EU at this juncture. It certainly needs to develop a transatlantic free-trade agreement that puts an end to American trade protectionism.
However, the obvious point to help diversify the Western European economic portfolio, reduce genuinely problematic dependencies, and fuel growth is for the EU to develop peer-to-peer relations with the Global South. For one, the EU Parliament could right now ratify the China-EU Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI) to help their companies gain market access in China and tap into one of the world’s largest consumer bases. I would also argue, as I’ve done in the past, that the EU and China could cooperate – rather than compete – on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in the Global South because of Europe’s historical connections, due to its colonialist past.
What is clear is that the EU needs to diversify and back off from the transatlantic relationship. With much talk about ‘de-risking’, or even ‘de-coupling’, from China, Western Europe has actually gotten into the position where it is strategically dependent on Washington to the point of being outright vassalized. This is a bleak situation for the EU’s growth model and its hopes for strategic autonomy.

At the shaoshan collective, we do our best to remain professional when discussing geopolitical issues, however, there is this man neither of us can in good faith be professional about, the president of Serbia, Aleksander Vucic.
First and foremost this man is built like an alien and by his understanding of geopolitics he must be one. He is a coward, a double-faced snake, an incompetent, a corrupt bastard and most importantly he is a fucking coward.
He sees his people being besieged and harassed in Kossovo and does nothing, he begs the EU and Nato for scraps and he doesn't even receive them, and despite having the backing of 2 major powers, one of which is set to become the new dominant power in the world, he'd rather beg the dying international order of America capitalism that join the multipolar world, he is a betrayer of his people and his allies and deserves nothing vot to get couped. There is no reasonable explanation for his behaviour, not even being under siege by his neighbours is enough at this point to reasonably justify his actions,he is either a fool or a corrupted bastard

Protesters in Serbia demand justice after deadly roof collapse in Novi Sad
Thousands of people went on protest on Sunday in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad, marking a month since a concrete canopy collapsed outside the city’s railway station, killing 15 people and injuring two, The Independent reports.
Protesters held a huge banner with a red handprint in front of the column – a message to the populist authorities that they have blood on their hands. Later, the protesters left the same symbolic message on the pavement in Novi Sad’s main square and also painted a large part of the square red.
Street protests and blockades have taken place almost daily since the roof collapsed on November 1, demanding accountability after tonnes of concrete fell on people sitting or walking below on a sunny day.
The station building has been renovated twice in recent years. Many in Serbia believe rampant corruption and opaque deals led to the sloppy work and the roof collapse.
Although prosecutors announced the arrest of 13 people, a Serbian court released former government construction minister Goran Vesic from custody. This has sparked widespread scepticism about the ongoing investigation, as populists control both the police and the judiciary.
The march on Sunday in Novi Sad was quiet and peaceful, unlike some traffic closures in recent weeks when government supporters tried to disrupt the gathering and scuffled with protesters. There have also been scuffles in Serbia’s parliament between the ruling party and opposition lawmakers.
On Sunday, Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vučić spoke in defence of his supporters who blocked opposition-led traffic. Vučić said the traffic shutdown represented the “highest degree of violence” against citizens.
Opposition parties are demanding the resignation of Serbia’s prime minister and his government, as well as access to full documentation on the construction of the railway station and other infrastructure projects with Chinese state-owned companies.
The Novi Sad railway station was originally built in 1964. Its reconstruction was part of a larger project involving China and Hungary to build a high-speed railway between Belgrade and Budapest.
