Serbian activists arrested after mass protest against lithium mining
A mass protest against lithium mining ended with the arrests and sentences of three environmental activists, Ivan Bjelić, Nikola Ristić, and Jevđenije Julijan Dimitrijević.
Bjelić was sentenced to a 40-day detention, while Ristić and Dimitrijević received a 30-day arrest for “disturbing public order and peace,” according to the first instance judgement, which legal experts called “draconian.”
The activists were arrested in the early hours of 11 August at one of the two Belgrade railway stations blocked by protesters. Thy were convicted, however, not for blocking the railway, but for disrupting public order by verbally abusing a journalist from pro-government Informer television who was reporting on the scene, according to local media.
The Higher Public Prosecutors Office in Belgrade announced on 11 August that all those who blocked the railway would be prosecuted. Lawyer Rodoljub Šabić, former Public Information Commissioner of Serbia, called the sanctions “draconian” and an intimidation attempt. The lawyer of the arrested activists Marko Pantić stated:
It is alleged that they obstructed the journalist’s work, surrounded her and shouted. In our opinion, this action must be concretised. What did they shout, where did they surround her, how did they disturb her? If they shouted ‘child poisoning’, it was not directed at that journalist personally. I believe that no one thinks that the journalist poisons children, but that it refers to the Jadar project and the whole story for which the protests were organised.
Railway blockade
The blockade of railway stations lasted several hours and ended after police intervened. Interior Minister Ivica Dačić said on Sunday that the police acted without using coercive measures and that no one was hurt. President Aleksandar Vučić declared:
The blockades and protests are not the solution. I will talk to the people about the fear of lithium mining and with those who think differently.
Zlatko Kokanović, an environmental activist and one of the organisers of protests against lithium mining, said that environmental organisations would not give up their demands for a ban on lithium mining in Serbia.
We want to send a message, you can arrest us, but we continue, we are not afraid, we are heading towards victory, to the end.
Prior to the railway blockade, some 30,000 people took to the streets of Belgrade on Saturday night to protest against the re-announcement of the opening of the lithium mine of the international company Rio Tinto in the Jadar River valley in the west of the country.
The protest was organised by the Association of Environmental Organisations of Serbia. Speakers claimed that they would not allow the mine to open due to concerns that the lithium mine would pollute water sources and seriously jeopardise public health.
Lithium for EU electric vehicles
A series of protests began following the Serbian government’s decision in mid-July to continue a project to open a lithium mine in the Jadar Valley, which was halted by state authorities in 2022 also due to large-scale protests.
On 19 July, the Critical Raw Material Summit was held in Belgrade. The meeting was attended by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, European Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič, and President Vučić. It concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the EU and Serbia on sustainable raw materials, battery value chains, and electric vehicles (EVs).
The EU has been expressing interest in Serbian lithium reserves in the context of reducing dependence on the critical raw material and transitioning to a green economy. Germany also showed appetite in recent years, with lithium batteries being a key element in the production of EVs.
According to the Rio Tinto plan, the Jadar project will produce around 58,000 tonnes of lithium per year, enough for 17% of Europe’s EV production. According to recent statements by the Serbian authorities, led by the Serbian Progressive Party, the mine will open in 2028 if the company complies with environmental regulations and obtains the necessary permits.
In recent years, many experts and environmental associations in Serbia have argued that lithium mining could have serious negative consequences for the environment. Widespread mistrust in Serbia’s state institutions, which would be responsible for enforcing environmental standards, has also been emphasised.

BY KRIS BROWN
Last week, Serbia experienced two separate mass shootings that killed more than a dozen people, including children. Serbia, a nation tied for the third highest rate of gun ownership in the world, was shaken by this violence. Unlike here at home, mass shootings are not a daily occurrence.
It did not take long for the Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic, to take swift action. A mere day after these senseless shootings, Vucic announced several measures that would prevent further tragedy. The measures include a ban on new gun permits, tougher penalties for illegal weapons possession, psychological checks of gun owners and an amnesty for the surrender of illegal weapons.
It only took two days, after two horrific mass shootings, for Serbia to act. Why, after more than 200 mass shootings in 2023 alone, has the United States failed to take similar sweeping action, or much action at all?
Day after day, the US experiences senseless gun violence and yet it’s generally accepted that lawmakers will do little to prevent the next mass shooting. This is despite Americans making it clear they don’t want empty chairs at their dinner tables, and don’t want their children to share experiences and trauma with war veterans. Simply put, most Americans want action to be taken on gun violence.
The difference between Serbia’s action and the US’s inaction boils down to the gun industry’s political influence. The US can’t take the sweeping actions favored by the majority of Americans, including even universal background checks, because a small – but powerful – minority of lawmakers have adopted the gun lobby’s complete opposition to sensible gun laws and regulations. The gun lobby – and not just the NRA – has spent decades making this possible by funneling endless supplies of donations to political candidates as well as by creating an extremist view of the second amendment that is antagonistic towards any and all firearm restrictions and safeguards.
The gun lobby wants Americans to believe that there is no legislative or regulatory remedy to gun violence. Its loudest voices are telling Americans they’re not “praying enough” for mass shootings to stop. They blame mental health. They point their fingers at everything and everyone except the actual cause of gun violence in the US. While they do everything to distract, one thing is clear, the carnage is caused by ample and easy access to guns.
How do we know it’s gun access? Because when governments, particularly state governments, put into place commonsense safeguards, we see fewer killings, less death and less trauma.
Much like Serbia, other countries have sprung into action immediately in the wake of mass shootings. It only took one mass shooting in Australia for the government to ban assault weapons, and in the decades since the rate of deaths by firearms has plummeted in the country. The UK has not experienced a mass shooting since 1996, when it acted to ban certain guns in the wake of a shooting in which 16 school children and one adult were killed in Dunblane. After the Christchurch shooting in New Zealand, the government offered a buyback program and removed almost 60,000 firearms from circulation.
Here at home, we’ve seen improvements after states such as California, Colorado, Maryland and Michigan took action to fill gaps left by legislators at the federal level. These states recognize that when an assault weapon or a high-capacity magazine is used in a public mass shooting, nearly 14 times as many people are injured and twice as many people are killed. In doing so, they have made their states safer, but a lack of federal action still leaves them vulnerable to guns brought in from other states. Despite that, California now has the seventh lowest firearm death rate in the country, while states with weaker gun laws, such as Mississippi, Louisiana and New Mexico, have among the highest. This is not a coincidence. When states put more stringent safeguards into place, fewer people die by firearms.
Serbia has clearly taken note from the successes of these other nations that put people over guns. What will it take for the American legislators beholden to the gun lobby’s money and influence to do the same? It doesn’t have to be like this. Americans don’t have to live paralyzed in fear of whether our schools, our places of worship, our healthcare facilities or our malls will be the stage of the next national tragedy. The US government can in fact stop gun violence like other countries have, but only if our policymakers start answering to the people, not the industry.
Other nations have experienced mass shootings, but in the US too many of our legislators are dependent on gun industry donations and support to take the bold action needed to save lives.

🇷🇸🇽🇰 SERBIAN PRESIDENT ALEKSANDAR VUCIC ASKS NATO TO TAKE OVER POLICING IN NORTHERN KOSOVO
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic met with the ambassadors of five Western countries and the EU in Belgrade on Tuesday, Sept 26th where he demanded the NATO Kosovo Forces (KFOR) take over, "all the Security matters in the North of Kosovo instead of (Kosovo Prime Minister) Kurti's Police.
The demand comes just one day after a major gun battle ensued in the village of Banjska in Kosovo on Sunday. A group of 30 Militant Serbs ambushed a Kosovo Police Unit, resulting in the death of a Police Officer along with multiple attackers and ending with an hours long standoff in a local Monastery.
The shootout marked one of the deadliest episodes since Kosovo declared independence from Serbia with Western support in 2008. Western leaders had been looking to normalize ties between the two countries, but so far have seen little success.
KFOR Forces currently number 4'500 soldiers stationed in Kosovo.

The EU Doesn’t Know How to Not Be a Vassal of the US Anymore
Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson has tried to show Americans how Washington has exploited Western Europe
— Bradley Blankenship | RT | August 22, 2023

Tucker Carlson, of Fox News fame, recently met with Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic in Budapest, Hungary. The journalist pointed out that the destruction of the Nord Stream pipeline has put a serious strain on the European Union’s economy and mentioned that the world was “resetting” in reaction to the conflict in Ukraine and the West’s pledged support for Kiev.
Carlson raises some good issues, and an important one to expand upon is the fact that the EU economy is lagging significantly since the outbreak of the war last year. A June piece by the Financial Times titled ‘Europe has fallen behind America and the gap is growing’ details how the EU is now considerably dependent on the US for its technological, security, and economic needs.
In terms of hard numbers, Jeremy Shapiro and Jana Puglierin of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) think tank have stated: “In 2008, the EU’s economy was somewhat larger than America’s: $16.2tn versus $14.7tn. By 2022, the US economy had grown to $25tn, whereas the EU and the UK together had only reached $19.8tn. America’s economy is now nearly one-third bigger. It is more than 50 per cent larger than the EU without the UK.”
The article goes on to describe a European Union that is dragging far behind the US and China in terms of quality universities, a less-than-pristine start-up environment, and lacking key benefits from its transatlantic peer – namely cheap energy. The Ukraine conflict has impacted the latter to the point that EU companies are paying three or four times what their American competitors are, with Washington being energy-independent and enjoying great domestic supplies. Meanwhile, energy from Russia is waning, European factories are closing in droves, and industry leaders are worried about the region’s future competitiveness.
The ECFR issued its own report on the matter in April, which is far blunter in describing the situation as a kind of “vassalization.” The summary of that report notes that the Ukraine war has exposed the EU’s key dependencies on the US, that over the course of a decade, the bloc has fallen behind the US in virtually every key metric, that it is deadlocked in disagreement and is looking to Washington for leadership.
The ECFR noted two causes for this situation. Firstly, despite the widely understood decline of the US compared to the rise of China, the transatlantic relationship has been unbalanced in Washington’s favor over the last 15 years since the 2008 financial crisis. The Biden administration is keen to exploit this and assert itself in the face of a disjointed Europe. Secondly, no one in the EU knows what greater strategic autonomy could look like – let alone agree on it if they did. There exists no process to decide the EU’s future in an autonomous way given the current status quo, which means US leadership is necessary.
This paints quite an interesting picture. Many commentators, including myself, have long documented the decline of the US and attributed it to a number of factors: less of an attractive environment for foreign direct investment (FDI), financial instability, corruption, and internal political turmoil. This is, of course, relativized to China, which has seen immense economic growth since the founding of the People’s Republic and particularly over the past four decades. But under the smoke screen of a fumbling America and a growing China, the EU has likewise fallen in stature.
The Western Establishment just gave itself a ‘World Peace and Liberty’ Award! Ursula von der Leyen received the ‘Judicial Equivalent’. The Western Establishment just gave itself a ‘World Peace and Liberty’ Award. Ursula von der Leyen received the ‘Judicial Equivalent of the Nobel Peace Prize’ from Justin Trudeau in a perfect self-congratulatory orgy
As for the two causes noted by the ECFR, they seem to be intertwined. Many of the key issues that have faced the EU, from migration to the banking crisis to Covid-19, have stemmed directly from the non-federal nature of the EU. And the current political crises are a result of Euroskepticism, i.e. a backlash against what is perceived as an overreach from Brussels by some political organizations within the bloc. The EU is a complicated and sometimes cumbersome bureaucracy that is cherished by some, reviled by others, and, under these assumptions, is an impediment to strategic autonomy.
The ECFR essentially argues for the EU and Western European capitals to lean into the transatlantic partnership, but on terms favorable to themselves. This includes creating an independent security architecture within and complimentary to NATO, creating an economic NATO of sorts and even pursuing a European nuclear weapons program. At least the former two are acceptable, as abandoning the US outright would be politically foolish for the EU at this juncture. It certainly needs to develop a transatlantic free-trade agreement that puts an end to American trade protectionism.
However, the obvious point to help diversify the Western European economic portfolio, reduce genuinely problematic dependencies, and fuel growth is for the EU to develop peer-to-peer relations with the Global South. For one, the EU Parliament could right now ratify the China-EU Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (CAI) to help their companies gain market access in China and tap into one of the world’s largest consumer bases. I would also argue, as I’ve done in the past, that the EU and China could cooperate – rather than compete – on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in the Global South because of Europe’s historical connections, due to its colonialist past.
What is clear is that the EU needs to diversify and back off from the transatlantic relationship. With much talk about ‘de-risking’, or even ‘de-coupling’, from China, Western Europe has actually gotten into the position where it is strategically dependent on Washington to the point of being outright vassalized. This is a bleak situation for the EU’s growth model and its hopes for strategic autonomy.

At the shaoshan collective, we do our best to remain professional when discussing geopolitical issues, however, there is this man neither of us can in good faith be professional about, the president of Serbia, Aleksander Vucic.
First and foremost this man is built like an alien and by his understanding of geopolitics he must be one. He is a coward, a double-faced snake, an incompetent, a corrupt bastard and most importantly he is a fucking coward.
He sees his people being besieged and harassed in Kossovo and does nothing, he begs the EU and Nato for scraps and he doesn't even receive them, and despite having the backing of 2 major powers, one of which is set to become the new dominant power in the world, he'd rather beg the dying international order of America capitalism that join the multipolar world, he is a betrayer of his people and his allies and deserves nothing vot to get couped. There is no reasonable explanation for his behaviour, not even being under siege by his neighbours is enough at this point to reasonably justify his actions,he is either a fool or a corrupted bastard

Serbian president declares municipal election victory
Serbian authorities declared victory in municipal elections, including a rerun in Belgrade due to allegations of serious irregularities.
The victory claim, awaiting confirmation by the state election commission, is expected to consolidate the power of the Serbian Progressive Party, which is a candidate for European Union membership.
Serbia held local elections for members of the Belgrade City Council and local authorities in 14 other cities, 51 municipalities and 23 urban municipalities. A total of 14 coalitions participated in the Belgrade City Council elections, the same number as in Novi Sad. In the city of Nis there were 11 coalitions.
Prime Minister Miloš Vučević announced on Sunday, June 2, that the party had won the election. The victory was “pure and convincing,” he added. Opposition representatives, however, alleged serious irregularities in the voting, which the ruling party denied.
Local media reported incidents and clashes in Belgrade and the northern city of Novi Sad. Opposition groups there alleged that the ruling party set up “unlawful” call centres during Sunday’s voting.
Belgrade’s election was a rerun following reports of widespread irregularities in December that sparked political tensions and accusations that President Aleksandar Vučić‘s ruling party rigged the vote. He announced the victory of his Serbian Progressive Party in local elections on Sunday.
In [the capital] Belgrade, our list will have 52%, which is an incredible victory, it is an incredible victory in Novi Sad.
