Telefonica Dakar Rally 2004
Nissan's second year in the Dakar Rally was a "challenge to return." Led by Ari Vatanen (Finland), a four-time Dakar Rally winner, the team also added Giniel de Villiers (South Africa) and Colin McRae (Great Britain), a top athlete in the World Rally Championship (WRC), and pushed the Nissan pickup to its limits. Vatanen achieved 50 wins in the Dakar Rally's SS (special stage). Both de Villiers and McRae completed the race, and Nissan's challenge continued into 2005.
Nissan's Dakar project enters its second year
Former WRC champion McRae was welcomed to the team. This showed that this year's rally was a challenge in terms of "speed". In addition, there was the stable Vatanen, Loupe, and the rising star De Villiers. In order to develop Japanese drivers, Yoshio Ikemachi and Atsushi Mitsuhashi were welcomed from the two-wheel team and competed in the T1 (production car) class. Yves Roubaix (France, Nissan Pickup) was forced to withdraw for the first time due to electrical problems.
Although there was unexpected trouble that forced them to retire on the 1st, the efforts of each team member to fulfill their assigned role to the best of their ability were inspiring. Nissan Works' 2004 Dakar Rally started on an exciting note. In the European stage at Castellon (Spain), De Villier took the top time in the 9km 35 (race section), demonstrating his speed to the passionate Spanish fans. After crossing the Straits of Gibraltar, in the first African stage, Vatanen, who has won the Dakar Rally four times, achieved his long-cherished dream of winning 50 special stage races in total. In his second year back in the desert with Nissan, De Villier set a new personal record.
Nissan Pickup Runs Hot as Records are Breaking
"I had wanted to achieve this feat in the Dakar, but I'm happy to achieve my 50th victory at the start of the African stage."
Vatanen is, of course, the most successful driver in the Dakar Rally. Next is F1 and Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx (Belgium), who has 29 wins. The record he achieved in a Nissan Pickup is unlikely to be broken anytime soon.
Since Nissan decided to challenge the Dakar Rally in 2003, Ari Vatanen has become a symbol of Nissan. He has always been a figure of attention, and still shows top-class driving. In 2004, Colin McRae's participation in the Dakar Rally increased the attention of the British media. The Nissan Pick Up attracted attention from all over the world. The trio of Vatanen, McRae, and de Villiers fought a high-speed battle in the desert against Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution, BMW X5, Volkswagen Race Touareg, and Schlesser Buggy. They attacked boldly. Vatanen lost a lot of time after getting splashed while crossing a river in Morocco, but the next day he started from 90th place and finished 7th in the stage. He overtook more than 80 slower cars with the speed of a veteran to complete the stage.

Taking advantage of last year's success, the Nissan team's top-flight teammate, G. de Villiers, took the lead on the 7th. This South African challenger held off the unreasonable Bush and drove the car to the finish line.
Ikemachi won his class in his first attempt at a four-wheeled vehicle. He brought a ray of hope to the Nissan team, who were generally forced to make difficult decisions. He demonstrated the durability of the machine and the effectiveness of the training program. And he showed Ikemachi's own potential.

"There were times when we were catching up with Sel and Masuoka," he said. But the "three days of hell" were about to begin for the Nissan Works team. After troubles occurred in succession in the eighth and ninth stages, Vatanen and McRae were still stuck in the desert by the evening of the 9th. The team was worried. If things continued like this, both would have to retire. However, the rally was being watched by a gang of bandits (the Malian anti-government group).
The team was warned by intelligence sources that the Mobuchi stage was likely to be occupied by the French army, and decided to move on to the next stage via Bamako. It's not over yet. The deadline is 6pm on the 12th, the rest day.
At the time the announcement was made, the two Nissan Pick Ups, excluding de Villiers, were still stranded in the desert.
Two Nissan cars, two big names in particular, won
Whether or not you can wear it within the time limit. That is the maximum for rest days.
It became a hot topic. Two days passed, and the 12th came.
The team believed in them and waited patiently. McRae arrived around 3pm, and Vatanen arrived after 4pm, welcomed by the press as if they had won. Their rally wasn't over yet. The two started the next morning without a rest day. However... Vatanen was driving too hard and was bounced over a gap and crashed into a tree. He was finally out of the race.
McRae, who remained, never gave up on his "challenge for speed" until the very end, setting the fastest time on the final day.
He was able to demonstrate his ability.
Speed in the Moroccan desert, perseverance, teamwork and excitement from Mali to Burkina Faso. The second year of the Dakar has taught us many things. And it has fired up our enthusiasm for the next step. Nissan's challenge in the desert continues.

What did former WRC champion C. McRae think of the Dakar Rally? Despite struggling with problems, he quickly adapted to the machine and the environment, and finished in 20th place.
The team staff supported the intense race from behind the scenes. Including the support truck, more than 60 crew members assisted the driver with a perfect backup system.
The 2004 car has undergone significant evolution, including in terms of aerodynamics. Japan's NISMO also assisted in its development, and the car is equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 VQ35 engine, and its appearance racing through the sand dunes is truly that of a "desert GT car."

A patient drive leads to class victory
Born in 1971, he is 32 years old. In the 2000 motorcycle race, he achieved the highest ranking of any Japanese rider, finishing 10th overall. He made his first appearance in the T1 class with a Nissan Patrol (known as the Safari in Japan) and led the team to a splendid victory.
Rather than being happy about winning the class,
I felt like I had completed the race. The commercially available T1 class Patrol (known as the Safari in Japan) that I drove was durable but heavy, and the regulations required a small intake restrictor, so it was a tough situation. I had to endure throughout the race. Supporting the Nissan team's T2 machine, a higher class, was also an important part of my job, so I aimed to finish the race trouble-free and come third in the class. I could have actually driven faster, but I had to endure being overtaken and was patient even when there was a car a little slower than me in front of me.
But on a rest day, I was suddenly told, "I'm going to give you another task. Aim to win."
This was my first time in the Paris-Dakar Rally on a four-wheeled vehicle, and I learned that mental strength is more important with four-wheeled vehicles than with two-wheeled vehicles. I was taught a lot by an experienced navigator, and we started out as teacher and student relationships, but once we were able to communicate well, I was able to concentrate on driving.
To me, the navigator was like a reliable older brother.
Of course, my goal is not to be satisfied with winning the T1 class, but to compete in the T2 class and achieve good results. I want to participate in the actual race again as soon as possible and try to improve myself again.

Born in 1970, he is 33 years old. With the experience of participating in the Dakar Rally for three consecutive years, he participated in his first four-wheeled vehicle race in a Nissan Pathfinder (known as the Terrano in Japan). But as I got used to it and our communication improved, I was able to look at the road in front of me and concentrate only on driving fast. In the end, the clutch wouldn't disengage before I crossed the sand dunes, and I couldn't change gears and had to retire. Since I didn't finish the race, this year's Rally-Dakar ended in an incomplete way for me. Still, I was able to drive as I had aimed and improve my position, and I also gained some benefits, such as being able to drive on an equal footing with the top group on the high-speed stages in Morocco.
I was able to test all of my strategies in real combat.
I wanted to make a move in the next marathon stage, but I flipped my car over and damaged the radiator, so I couldn't run as I wanted. My goal is to win the overall championship, so I want to practice with a fast T2 class car soon.

Ese proyecto, que solamente corrió una vez en las rutas sudamericanas, es el Volkswagen Race Touareg 3, heredero de dos generaciones de Race Touareg que corrieron en África (Versión 1) y del que venció el Rally de Europa Central (reemplazo del Dakar en 2008) y que ganó el Dakar 2009 con Giniel de Villiers y el 2010 con Carlos Sainz. Un verdadero Fórmula 1 para la arena y la tierra, que lamentablemente alcanzamos a ver solo una vez, pero nos dejó suficientes historias y detalles, que recordamos en esta nota.
En Agosto de 2010, Volkswagen finalmente anunció el sucesor del exitoso Race Touareg 2, el primer vehículo diesel en ganar el Dakar en autos, con la victoria de Giniel de Villiers en 2009. Las mejoras más notorias del Race Touareg 3 son principalmente aerodinámicas y de carrocería, para optimizar aún más el vehículo a lo que era el desafío del Dakar sudamericano. La aerodinámica fue el principal objetivo de este modelo, que tiene notorias mejoras en la parte superior de auto, en la sección trasera y en la máscara. Todo eso pensando en las velocidades altas que se alcanzaban tanto en el abierto Desierto de Atacama como en las secciones tipo WRC de Argentina. Además se incluyeron cambios en los focos, actualizados a LED y en las lllantas.
El motor del Race Touareg 3 también recibió una ligera optimización pensando en el consumo de combustible, que siempre puede ser factor en una etapa larga en el Dakar. El motor 2,5 litros TDI se estimó que era capaz de producir hasta 300 HP de potencia y 600 Nm de torque gracias a una unidad diesel twin-turbo. Con esta unidad y la caja secuencial de carreras de cinco velocidades, el Race Touareg 3 era capaz de alcanzar los 100 kilómetros por hora en 6,1 segundos. Gracias a las mejoras aerodinámicas, eso implicó un aumento de la velocidad punta a 188 km/h.

El debut oficial del Race Touareg 3 fue el Silk Way Rally de 2010. Disputado entre San Petersburgo y Sochi, atravesando el oeste de Rusia de norte a sur. Fue un notable 1-2-3 para Volkswagen, con Carlos Sainz terminando primero por segunda vez en su carrera. Segundo después de casi 5000 kilómetros, terminaba Nasser Al-Attiyah a 8 minutos con la segunda unidad del Race Touareg y tercero, el estadounidense Mark Miller con otro Race Touareg. Todo parecía muy bien encaminado para el Dakar 2011.
El Dakar 2011 programaba 13 etapas con 5 días en Chile, visitando Calama, Iquique, Arica, Antofagasta y Copiapó. Por primera vez se llegaría a Arica, donde se viviría el día de descanso. La lucha sería claramente entre Volkswagen y BMW: VW defendía el título logrado por Carlos Sainz en 2010 y repetía la alineación de ese año con Sainz, Nasser Al-Attiyah, Giniel de Villiers y Mark Miller. BMW con X-Raid tenía entre sus filas a Stephane Peterhansel, deseoso de terminar el festín de Volkswagen. También X-Raid contaba con Krzysztof Holowczyc, Orly Terranova, Leonid Novitskiy y Ricardo Leal dos Santos en BMW X3CC. X-Raid también tenía un arma secreta: Se lanzaba el MINI All4Racing, pilotado por Guerlain Chicherit, que había sido quinto en 2010. ¿Se venía una lucha de nuevas máquinas? La definición, sin embargo, llegaría al día siguiente cuando en el polvo de Al-Attiyah, Sainz caería en un hoyo y dañaría gravemente la suspensión delantera de su Race Touareg 3, debiendo ser asistido por Mark Miller. 1 hora y 14 minutos perdidos en reparaciones, que le costaban la carrera y también el segundo puesto. “He hecho todo lo que he podido. Con su principal rival fuera de la lucha y Giniel de Villiers segundo, a más de 50 minutos, Nasser se lo tomó con mucha calma en los últimos días, permitiendo que Sainz ganara las últimas dos especiales para desahogarse y defender el 1-2-3 de Volkswagen sobre Peterhansel. Sería la primera victoria del qatarí en el Dakar y la tercera consecutiva para VW, todas en Sudamérica. El Race Touareg 3 debutaba con un imponente triunfo sobre BMW. Al año siguiente no volverían y comenzaría una hegemonía de 4 años de MINI. ¿Qué hubiera sido del duelo del MINI All4Racing y el Race Touareg 3, dos vehículos estrenados el mismo año? No lo sabremos, porque Volkswagen decidió guardarse su tecnología y no arrendó sus autos a nadie. Simplemente, los Race Touareg 3 nunca más volvieron a correr oficialmente un Dakar.

As of late, Porsche has already established a tendency to not disclose cars to the public until enough time has passed . That’s precisely why we’re seeing cars that were constructed more than a decade ago, only to now be observed in the public eye. Within 2008, Ferdinand Piëch wanted a roadster in order to tribute the Porsche 550 from the 1950s . You may have heard of this as ‘The Little Bastard. ’ Sadly, it got an undesired reputation as the car that wiped out James Dean. According to the designer’s Instagram page (above), it’s not immediately crystal clear the motivation behind the car over and above that it was never revealed to the public.
What came to be referred to as Porsche 550ne (think 2020ne), it is become more of a design study which has seen details trickle into afterwards Porsches. Really though, this is an one-off modernization of a sports car built over fifty percent a century ago.

Inside is a mix of previous and present. The steering wheel is definitely identical to the one seen in the particular hybrid hypercar that is the Porsche 918 Spyder. The center console appears to be exclusive to the concept, having never managed to get to a production car. Same for your metal shift-gate similar to the one present in the first-generation Audi R8.
De Silva has a good career that spans more than 4 decades. Having begun his profession at Fiat when he has been 21, he made his method to Alfa Romeo until he has been assigned by Ferdinand Piëch to operate at SEAT before transferring in order to Audi and Volkswagen to end their tenure. These days, he spends their time writing and sharing vehicles on Instagram that he designed.
His portfolio notably consists of the Alfa Romeo 156, Alfa 166, the first-generation Audi R8 , the revitalized Vw Scirocco, the 2010 Volkswagen Touareg, and the Volkswagen Up! hatchback. Sobre Silva alleges that his preferred car to work on was the 3 years ago Audi A5.

2010: La primera victoria de Carlos Sainz en el Dakar
Hoy Carlos Sainz ya cuenta con tres victorias en el Dakar, pero en antes de largar el Dakar 2010 en Buenos Aires, la situación era bastante distinta. Pese a lograr 15 victorias de etapa en sus tres largadas desde 2006, el mejor resultado del bicampeón del WRC era un 9° puesto en 2007. Había estado cerca en todas las ediciones, pero en África, Mauritania le había jugado una mala pasada y en la primera carrera en Sudamérica, un error de navegación a dos días del final le había entregado la victoria en bandeja a Giniel de Villiers. La revancha tenía que llegar en 2010.
La previa de la carrera de 2010 planteaba una lucha entre BMW y Volkswagen. Ambas marcas alemanas se habían reforzado de manera importante durante la temporada del Mundial de Cross Country FIA. Volkswagen había sumado a Nasser Al-Attiyah, proveniente de X-Raid, a su equipo que ya estaba conformado por Sainz, de Villiers y el estadounidense Mark Miller, segundo en 2009. Al-Attiyah deseaba mejorar su performance en el Dakar con un cambio al mejor auto disponible, pero también aprender de la experiencia de Sainz. X-Raid, por su parte, había sumado a la tremenda experiencia y velocidad de Stephane Peterhansel, que salía del equipo oficial Mitsubishi luego que la marca japonesa debiera cerrar su escudería por problemas económicos. Además de Peterhansel, Nani Roma también se sumaba a X-Raid desde Mitsubishi. El equipo X-Raid además tenía a Guerlain Chicherit como una de sus armas para luchar adelante. También había algunos “outsiders”: Robby Gordon, tercero en 2009, buscaba luchar de nuevo con su imponente Hummer. Los Mitsubishi Racing Lancer, que apenas habían corrido un solo Dakar, recalaron en el equipo privado JMB que tenía un respetable equipo para luchar por el Top 10: El experimentado Carlos Sousa, el argentino Orly Terranova y el brasileño Guilherme Spinelli.
Las cartas comenzaron a ser jugadas por los desafiantes ya desde las primeras etapas: Nani Roma se llevaba el primer día en Córdoba y Nasser Al-Attiyah se imponía el segundo día. El denominador común era que ninguno de los dos se había alejado mucho de Sainz, que se mantenía segundo en la general y muy cerca, pasadas las primeras dos especiales, principalmente de caminos. Para 2010, la estrategia de Sainz claramente era de paciencia mientras otros hacían el desgaste. El tercer día, Stephane Peterhansel (foto inferior) comienza su ataque aprovechando la llegada a Fiambalá, terrenos en los que siempre se ha destacado por su excelencia en navegación junto a Jean-Paul Cottret. Sainz se mantenía segundo, pero la distancia ahora era poco menos de 5 minutos. No había mucho margen, pero Peterhansel demostraba que el BMW tenía para pelear con los poderosos Race Touareg de Volkswagen. Una baja clave de la etapa 3 era Nani Roma, que abandonaba tras un accidente.
Robby Gordon ganaba la cuarta etapa saliendo de Fiambalá, pero el resultado clave era el segundo puesto de Peterhansel, que extendía la ventaja sobre Sainz en la general a 7 minutos y 40 segundos. Al-Attiyah completaba el podio, a 10 minutos. Los autos llegaban a Chile, donde en 2010 tendrían la oportunidad de recorrer más kilómetros en el Desierto de Atacama, lo que tendería a favorecer a Peterhansel. Lamentablemente, la etapa 5 terminaría sepultando las oportunidades de Mr. Dakar. Una falla mecánica lo dejaba parado más de dos horas, con lo que Volkswagen tomaba el 1-2-3 con Sainz a la cabeza seguido por Al-Attiyah y Mark Miller, que ganaba su primera etapa de este Dakar. La diferencia entre los tres Race Touareg era de menos de 10 minutos.
La marca alemana ahora tenía que tomar una decisión: ¿Cuidar el resultado? Ya se había visto lo delicado que es un triunfo con el accidente de Sainz en 2009. Sin embargo, Volkswagen vio que quedaba mucha carrera por delante y dejó que los pilotos corrieran sin ordenes de equipo hasta el final. Una decisión riesgosa, considerando que Sainz estaba adelante sin haber ganado etapas y sin haber sido el más rápido de los tres punteros hasta acá.
Peterhansel y Al-Attiyah (foto inferior) se repartieron las etapas en el Norte de Chile. Mr. Dakar seguro se cuestionaría si estuvo cerca de otro triunfo en el Dakar luego de mostrar impresionante ritmo en las etapas de Iquique y Antofagasta con el BMW X3CC. Aún así, Sainz lograba estirar su ventaja sobre Nasser, que seguía haciendo el gasto y teniendo que abrir ruta en etapas difíciles: Antes de salir de Copiapó en la última etapa de Atacama (día 9), la diferencia era de 8 minutos y medio a favor de Sainz, que seguía sin ganar especiales.
Aquí hay algo que hay que decir: La relación entre Sainz y Al-Attiyah también empeoraría en el Desierto de Atacama, con ambos pilotos luchando en la ruta en más de una oportunidad. Sainz no comprendía los riesgos que tomaba Al-Attiyah y que ponían en jaque a los dos autos punteros de Volkswagen. Al-Attiyah no estaba aprendiendo de Sainz, ¡lo estaba poniendo a prueba! Tal vez eso no era lo que se esperaba el Matador después de lo conversado previo a la carrera, pero se mantenía firme en el plan: No perder la paciencia.
La primera victoria de etapa para Carlos Sainz (foto inferior) llegaba en un buen momento: La Etapa 10 La Serena – Santiago, principalmente en caminos tipo WRC, favorecía el estilo del español y extendía su ventaja a 10 minutos. Eso si, ganar etapas significaba un cambio de estrategia para el madrileño y lo obligaría a abrir ruta. Un juego peligroso con un Al-Attiyah muy agresivo: Ambos tenían una etapa más complicada entre Santiago y San Juan, el día 11, pero el qatarí cortaba la diferencia a la mitad. Lo que había llegado a ser 15 minutos en algún momento era solamente 4 minutos y medio en favor de Sainz. Ya no había espacio para defenderse y Sainz debió salir a atacar en la etapa 12, logrando su segunda victoria de etapa. Lamentablemente para él, Al-Attiyah también tuvo un día inspirado y terminó a solo 52 segundos. La diferencia era de 5:20 a falta de dos especiales.
Con Sainz abriendo ruta en San Rafael, las cosas no fueron tan bien pero tal vez es demasiado tarde para Nasser. Sainz y Al-Attiyah llegan casi juntos a la meta mientras Peterhansel gana otra etapa y la diferencia entre los dos líderes se reduce a solamente 2 minutos y 48 segundos. Quedando 206 kilómetros de camino hacia Buenos Aires, la última etapa será extremadamente tensa para Sainz, pero estará difícil que con el mismo medio mecánico, Al-Attiyah pueda recortar 3 minutos. Volkswagen sigue impávido y decide no controlar la carrera: Serán los pilotos quienes decidan el ganador.
El resultado de la última etapa termina siendo el esperado: Al-Attiyah ataca con todo, pero solo logra recortar 36 segundos a Sainz. El español ha logrado su primer Dakar cuatro años después de haberse pasado al Cross Country. La diferencia final de 2 minutos y 12 segundos es la más apretada de la historia del Dakar en autos. El duelo entre Sainz y Al-Attiyah no hace más que comenzar y nos regalará imágenes de duelo auto a auto por la victoria en el Dakar 2011 nuevamente como compañeros de equipo y más adelante en 2019 y 2020. Pero por este momento, el triunfo es para Sainz que ha jugado su estrategia hasta que ha podido y ha hecho un trabajo supremo en mantener la concentración en la general sin los errores y problemas que lo habían afectado en África y en 2009.

Mark Miller fue tercero a solo media hora, completando un notable e inédito 1-2-3 de Volkswagen. Peterhansel fue cuarto a dos horas con su BMW y Chicherit completó el Top 5 pero a más de 4 horas de los dominantes Volkswagen.
"El Rally Dakar es una carrera de importancia enorme en el mundo del deporte. Estoy muy orgulloso de haber ganado y sobre todo de haberlo hecho a mi manera, de acuerdo con mi idea de lo que es este deporte" comentó Sainz después de su triunfo. "Este año hemos hecho un gran trabajo. Tenía que aprender a conducir con rapidez y sin cometer errores en la arena del desierto".El piloto español indicaba que la paciencia y calma había sido clave en esta carrera, especialmente con los embates de Nasser: "Ésta es una de las grandes diferencias con los rallys. A lo largo de todo el Dakar, durante los entrenamientos, incluso en el campo, tienes que ser paciente todo el tiempo"
