when I say that it's problematic to view abusers as malicious masterminds rather than self-deluded people with victim complexes that also applies to those trite, flattening posts about how "you shouldn't have anxiety over being a gaslighter or an emotional abuser, because gaslighting is always conscious and intentional, so if you're anxious about that, it's a sign you're not one!" like, no. sorry, but it's not that simple... sure there are people who gaslight with forethought and intent, but there are also people who are just so, so stuck in their flawed perception of the world that they see anyone else's differing perception as a threat and a personal attack that justifies all sorts of abusive behavior. sometimes gaslighting and emotional abuse look less like "lying" and more like being a rigid and inflexible person who lashes out at anyone who questions their worldview... and of course this "worldview" is often structured around the belief that they are a perpetual victim who is only defending themselves.

I understand wanting to relieve people's anxieties and I understand that being unreasonably anxious about being an abuser is common among victims, but the concept that if you're afraid of being abusive, that's a sign that you're not, is super dangerous. plenty of abusers are afraid of being abusive, which is why they refuse to perceive themselves that way.
