How To Prevent Common Eye Problems
The Eye: A Vital Organ for Vision

The eye is a complex sensory organ that allows us to perceive the world around us. It functions like a camera, capturing light and converting it into electrical signals that the brain processes into images. This seamless coordination makes vision possible, enabling us to navigate and enjoy life’s beauty.
Why Is the Eye Important for Vision?
The eye is essential for recognizing objects, perceiving colors, and sensing depth. Vision plays a crucial role in learning, communication, and maintaining balance and safety. Without proper eye function, daily tasks become more challenging, emphasizing the importance of eye health.
Parts of the Eye and Their Roles
1. Cornea: The clear, outer layer that focuses light onto the retina.
2. Iris and Pupil: Regulate the amount of light entering the eye.
3. Lens: Adjusts to focus on objects at varying distances.
4. Retina: Contains photoreceptors that convert light into signals.
5. Optic Nerve: Transmits signals from the retina to the brain.
Common Eye Problems
Glaucoma: Increased eye pressure that can damage the optic nerve.Light Sensitivity: Discomfort caused by bright light.Cataracts: Clouding of the lens that affects vision clarity.Blurry EyesEye Infection (Conjunctivitis)

omg babe can we get another part where they make sure that reader really is fine and rafe can finally calm down 'cause his girl is safe? <3
You were wrapped in one of his sweatshirts now — it hung off your frame like a soft exhale, the sleeves long enough to hide the tremble in your hands. Rafe had helped you change after the bleeding stopped, wiping your face with warm water, brushing your hair back with fingers that shook when he thought you weren’t looking.
He hadn’t sat back down.
He kept pacing. Kept scanning the room like there was something to fight off.
One hand curled at his jaw, the other gripped the edge of the kitchen counter until his knuckles blanched. You watched him with blurred vision, not from tears this time but from the pulsing weight in your head and the sharp, bone-deep ache of guilt lodged between your ribs.
“I’m sorry,” you said — barely louder than breath.
He turned sharply. “Don’t.”
But you continued, voice unraveling. “I’m sorry I scare you like this. I’m sorry you have to… watch it all again.”
He froze, shoulders tight, like the words struck bone.
“I know what you went through. With Molly.”
His name for her fell softly from your lips, like something sacred and dangerous all at once.
Your eyes dropped to your lap. “I know I’m not her. But I also know how she died. That you held her hand through every stage. That you sat by a hospital bed once before and watched the person you loved fade under machines and tests and IV drips. I don’t want to make you relive it.”
You looked up then — and his face…
Rafe looked like he was standing at the edge of a cliff all over again, toes curled over the ledge, staring into a loss that still whispered in his ear some nights. But behind the storm in his eyes, there was something else. Something gutted. Something alive.
“You don’t make me relive it,” he said, his voice low and splintered. “You remind me that I still have something to lose. And that’s a gift I never thought I’d get again.”
He crossed the room in two strides, dropped to his knees before you, and gathered your hands in his. “Don’t apologize for surviving. Don’t apologize for needing care. You are not some shadow of my past. You are now. You’re my now.”
Your lip trembled, and he caught it between his thumb and knuckle. Gentle. Devoted.
“I see her sometimes, yeah,” he admitted, voice thick. “But it’s not you I see when the fear creeps in. It’s her absence. Your presence—you—you’re what keeps me grounded. You’re what keeps me from drowning in what I lost.”
And then, the knock.
Sharp. Unexpected. Pulling both of you back into the real world like a needle to threadbare silk.
Jenni entered quickly — braid pulled tight, stethoscope swinging, coat still smelling faintly of outside wind. She went straight to you, kind and firm and clinical in her grace.
“Hey, sweetheart,” she murmured, crouching beside you. “Rafe gave me the rundown. Let’s get some answers, yeah?”
The exam was swift but thorough. Pulse, eyes, blood pressure. She drew blood with a precision only years of practice could teach. But her voice never lost that gentle cadence, the one reserved for the hurt and haunted.
“You’re extremely anemic,” she said finally. “Probably have been for weeks. Your body’s screaming for help — hence the headache, the bleeding, the fatigue. You need supplements, rest, and real meals. No skipping. No hiding.”
Rafe clenched his jaw. “I should’ve seen it.”
Jenni rolled her eyes. “You’re not her doctor anymore. You’re the one who called me. That’s what matters.”
He still looked like he blamed himself.
You reached for his hand.
“I have him,” you said to Jenni.
She smiled. “I can see that.”
When she left, it was silent. The quiet that follows the storm. Rafe didn’t speak as he lifted you from the couch, didn’t speak as he carried you down the hall. He just held you like a promise — one hand under your knees, the other curved around your back like he’d never let go again.
He laid you in bed like you were breakable porcelain. Brushed your hair from your temple. Then curled in behind you, fitting his body to yours like armor.
“I couldn’t save Molly,” he whispered into your spine, so soft it could’ve been a prayer. “But I will not lose you.”
And for the first time that day, your heart stopped hurting. Not because you weren’t scared — but because he was scared with you.
Because love wasn’t loud in this house.
It was a hand at your back.
A voice in the dark.
And the heartbeat behind you, steady as a vow.
-
Morning came like a whisper — gray before gold, light bleeding gently into the room through sheer curtains that moved like breath against the windows. The house was quiet but alive with the soft sounds of morning: the faint hum of the fridge, birds rustling in the trees just outside, and the soft click of the stove as Rafe turned the burner on.
He moved like he didn’t want to wake you.
You stirred only when the scent of toast and butter drifted through the air, mingling with the faint hint of coffee. Your body ached — not sharply, but with the heaviness of something half-healed. You blinked into the morning light, the haze in your head still lingering, your limbs slow to obey.
The bed was empty beside you. Still warm where he’d been.
A minute later, he returned — barefoot, hair rumpled, wearing an old T-shirt that clung to the curve of his chest. There was a tray in his hands. Toast, scrambled eggs, a glass of water, and two supplements in a tiny porcelain dish that looked comically elegant beside the silverware.
He set it down on the nightstand and crouched beside you, brushing your cheek with the back of his knuckles.
“Hey,” he said softly. “How’s your head?”
“Still cloudy,” you murmured.
“You’re pale.”
“I think that’s just how I live now.”
His lips twitched, but his eyes stayed worried.
“I made eggs,” he said, like it mattered. Like it was a small triumph. “And there’s iron in that supplement. You’ll probably feel worse before you feel better, but we’ll keep at it.”
You reached for his hand. Held it. Threaded your fingers between his.
“You didn’t sleep much,” you said.
“No,” he admitted. “Didn’t want to miss anything. I kept checking your breathing.”
You studied him. The tired beneath his eyes. The lines that deepened when he was scared. You knew — without asking — that he’d sat in the chair by the window for hours, watching your chest rise and fall like the tide.
“I’m sorry again,” you whispered. “For making you feel like you were back in that hospital room with her.”
Rafe shook his head.
“No,” he said simply. “That’s not what this is. With Molly… it was letting go. Watching the light fade.”
He leaned in closer, forehead nearly touching yours.
“But with you, it’s the opposite. It’s holding on. Every day, tighter. I didn’t know I could want something again. Want someone. Not like this.”
He swallowed hard, his voice breaking like the surface of still water. “I’m terrified all the time. But I think that’s what love is when it’s real. It’s risk. It’s sacrifice. It’s… breakfast trays and iron pills and pacing the kitchen at three a.m. because your heart’s in someone else’s body and you can’t bear the thought of losing it.”
You were crying now, silently. Tears sliding back into your hair.
He kissed them. One by one.
“I’m not going anywhere,” he said. “So don’t you dare go somewhere I can’t follow.”
And then he helped you sit up, slow and careful. Draped the blanket around your shoulders like a cloak. Fed you one bite at a time when your hands shook too badly to hold the fork.
You finished almost all of it. Not because you were hungry — but because he made it. Because he asked you to.
And when you finally leaned back against the pillows, sleep tugging at the edges again, he stayed beside you. One hand wrapped around your wrist, counting the seconds between pulses. The other smoothing circles into your thigh over the blanket, grounding you.
No more ghosts between you.
Just breath. Just now.
Just Rafe.

Because my most popular post is about weight loss and how it's a crock, I get a lot of questions about various things, including bariatric surgery--just posted the link to the post I did about that--but also Ozempic/Wegovy, the once-weekly injectable semaglutide medication that was developed for diabetes but was found to have independent benefits on weight loss.
I always said that weight loss was like Viagra: when a medication came along that actually worked, it would explode. We'd all hear about it. Fen-phen in the 90s worked, but it was bad for your heart. Stimulants, like meth, may cause weight loss, but they do it at the cost of heart health, and raise your likelihood of dying young. Over the counter weight loss supplements often contain illegal and unlisted thyroid hormone, which is also dangerous for the heart if taken in the absence of a real deficiency. Orlistat, or "Alli," works the same way as the Olestra chips Lays made in the 1990s--it shuts off your ability to digest fats, and the problem with that is that fats irritate the gut, so then you end up with fatty diarrhea and probably sharts. Plus Alli only leads to 8-10lbs of weight loss in the best case scenario, and most people are not willing to endure sharts for the sake of 8lbs.
And then came the GLP-1 agonists. GLP stands for glucagon-like peptide. Your body uses insulin to make cells uptake sugar. You can't just have free-floating sugar and use it, it has to go into the cells to be used. So if your body sucks at moving sugar into the cells, you end up with a bunch of glucose hanging out in places where it shouldn't be, depositing on small vessels, damaging nerves and your retinas and kidneys and everywhere else that has a whole lot of sensitive small blood vessels, like your brain.
Glucagon makes your liver break down stored sugars and release them. You can think of it as part of insulin's supporting cast. If your body needs sugar and you aren't eating it, you aren't going to die of hypoglycemia, unless you've got some rare genetic conditions--your liver is going to go, whoops, here you go! and cough it up.
But glucagon-like peptide doesn't act quite the same way. What glucagon-like peptide does is actually stimulating your body to release insulin. It inhibits glucagon secretion. It says, we're okay, we're full, we just ate, we don't need more glucagon right now.
This has been enough for many people to both improve blood sugar and cause weight loss. Some patients find they think about food less, which can be a blessing if you have an abnormally active hunger drive, or if you have or had an eating disorder.
However, every patient I've started on semaglutide in any form (Ozempic, Wegovy, or Rybelsus) has had nausea to start with, probably because it slows the rate of stomach emptying. And that nausea sometimes improves, and sometimes it doesn't. There's some reports out now of possible gastroparesis associated with it, which is where the stomach just stops contracting in a way that lets it empty normally into the small intestine. That may not sound like a big deal, but it's a lifelong ticket to abdominal pain and nausea and vomiting, and we are not good at treating it. We're talking Reglan, a sedating anti-nausea but pro-motility agent, which makes many of my patients too sleepy to function, or a gastric pacemaker, which is a relatively new surgery. You can also try a macrolide antibiotic, like erythromycin, but I have had almost no success in getting insurance to cover those and also they have their own significant side effects.
Rapid weight loss from any cause, whether illness, medication, or surgery, comes with problems. Your skin is not able to contract quickly. It probably will, over long periods of time, but "Ozempic face" and "Ozempic butt" are not what people who want to lose weight are looking for. Your vision of your ideal body does not include loose, excess skin.
The data are also pretty clear that you can't "kick start" weight loss with Ozempic and then maintain it with behavioral mechanisms. If you want to maintain the weight loss, you need to stay on the medication. A dose that is high enough to cause weight loss is significantly higher than the minimum dose where we see improvements in blood sugar, and with a higher dose comes higher risk of side effects.
I would wait on semaglutide. I would wait because it's been out for a couple of years now but with the current explosion in popularity we're going to see more nuanced data on side effects emerging. When you go from Phase III human trials to actual use in the world, you get thousands or millions more data points, and rare side effects that weren't seen in the small human trials become apparent. It's why I always say my favorite things for a drug to be are old, safe, and cheap.
I also suspect the oral form, Rybelsus, is going to get more popular and be refined in some way. It's currently prohibitively expensive--all of these are; we're talking 1200 or so bucks a month before insurance, and insurance coverage varies widely. I have patients who pay anything from zero to thirty to three hundred bucks a month for injectable semaglutide. I don't think I currently have anyone whose insurance covers Rybelsus who could also tolerate the nausea. My panel right now is about a thousand patients.
There are also other GLP-1 agonists. Victoza, a twice-daily injection, and Trulicity, and anything else that ends in "-aglutide". But those aren't as popular, despite being cheaper, and they aren't specifically approved for weight loss.
Mounjaro is a newer one, tirzepatide, that acts on two receptors rather than one. In addition to stimulating GLP-1 receptors, it also stimulates glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptors. It may work better; I'm not sure whether that's going to come with a concomitantly increased risk of side effects. It's still only approved for diabetes treatment, but I suspect that will change soon and I suspect we'll see a lot of cross-over in terms of using it to treat obesity.
I don't think these medications are going away. I also don't think they're right for everyone. They can reactivate medullary thyroid carcinoma; they can fuck up digestion; they may lead to decreased quality of life. So while there may be people who do well with them, it is okay if those people are not you. You do not owe being thin to anyone. You most certainly do not owe being thin to the extent that you should risk your health for it. Being thin makes navigating a deeply fat-hating world easier, in many ways, so I never blame anyone for wanting to be thin; I just want to emphasize that it is okay if you stay fat forever.

I'm currently working on an announced VN that I'm hoping to have finished by May. It was my full intent to wait until the game was fully finished before any kind of release, however, I have reached a point that would feel natural to release it in a 'build', like most other FVNs.
I would need to do a few extra things I was not planning on doing including:
- Finding free use background pictures. Currently I am scheduled for a trip in late April for the sole purpose of taking background pictures for this VN. It would be a bit of a time loss/temporary vision loss for the background pictures but it is not a major issue.
- I have no time to do a music/sfx pass on the work for its early build. It takes a LONG time to find appropriate free use music and it is out of my budget/scope to commission any music,. It however, takes even longer to implement the music and sfx in a way that the medium best utilizes music. While I intend to do this music pass for the final release, any early build will not have music. A poorly implemented/quick rush job is worse to me than no music and if I'm only supplementing vibes, I would rather release a playlist instead. It is not worth the time for me to stop writing/coding to implement the music for these builds
So the big question, and the one I'm making this post about is:
"Would you be interested in playing a VN early buid without music or would it be better for your play experience to wait for a release where music is available."

Go Go Southern Lesser Galago!
Also known as the South African galago or the mohol bushbaby, the southern lesser galago (Galago moholi) is a small primate from the Galagidae, or bushbaby family. As the name implies, they are located only in southern Africa, from northern South Africa up to Rwanda. Their preferred habitats are savannahs and semi-arid woodlands, where they can often be found high in the canopy, and they are particularly associated with Acacia trees.
The mohol bushbaby is one of the smaller members of its group; at full height they stand no taller than 15 cm (6 in) and weigh only 225 g (7.9 oz). In fact, their tail is longer than their body, easily reaching 23 cm (9 in) in length. While it isn't prehensile, the tail is still an important tool for climbing as it gives G. moholi an excellent sense of balance. Along with their incredible tails, the South African galago also has one of the largest sets of ears of any primate, proportional to its size; these ears can move independently to help the southen lesser bushbaby avoid predators. G. moholi's final distinguishing feature are their eyes, which are incredibly large and a distinctive orange color. Individuals themselves tend to be gray or light brown, which helps them blend in with their surroundings.
South African galagos are almost strictly nocturnal. At night, they forage through the canopy for moths and beetles. These bits of protein, however, are supplemental; the mohol bushbaby's primary source of food is gum, or hardened sap from the Acacia plant. G. moholi has several adaptations allowing it to specialize in gum extraction, including scraping teeth on the lower mandible; long, rough tongues; and digestive systems that have evolved to break down and ferment the tough substance. Because they have very few defense mechanisms, southern lesser galagos are a common prey for many nocturnal species like eagles, owls, snakes, mongooses, civets, and gennets.
One of the few ways the South African bushbaby avoids predation is through its social units. Groups of 2-7-- typically composed of a female, her young, and a few non-reproductive relatives-- forage together. In these groups, their collective night vision and highly-developed hearing allow them to detect and alert each other to predators long before the threat is immanent. While individuals forage seperately, they keep in contact via loud, high pitched calls that can serve as a warning for predators, a point of contact between mother and offspring, or a territorial warning between males.
Male G. moholi live seperately from social groups, and are highly aggressive against other males invading their territory. This area often overlaps that of several female-led groups, but they only come in contact with each other during the mating season. Unusually, the species has two mating seasons through the year; from January to Februrary (late summer) and from October to November (early spring). Following a gestation period of 120 days, females produce a single set of twins each mating season. Each set is weaned after approximately 3 months, and young become fully mature at 300 days. Female offspring may join the mother's group, while males leave to establish their own territory. In the wild, an individual may live up to 16 years.
Conservation status: The IUCN has classified the South African bushbaby as Least Concern. Studies have indicated that the population is stable and, in some areas, increasing. However, in other areas the species is threatened by habitat loss and possibly capture for the pet and bushmeat trade.

thinking thoughts about a vampire!gale AU 🦇💜✨
You hadn't been traveling for long when you were already known for being Astarion's personal juice box.
Gale, however, doesn't make his condition known to you until much later in your journey, when you've both known each other a lot more... intimately.
He explains that it's a by-product of the orb in his chest, that compels him to supplement his diet with fragments of Weave found in bloodstreams - even with it quelled by Elminster's magic, his craving remains.
He doesn't need to feed as often as Astarion does, but he does need something eventually.
Which was when he turned to you, in a moment of vulnerability, asking if you would be willing to be fed on, by him.
"But only with your express permission and most enthusiastic consent."
Having grown to care very deeply for Gale over your travels, you agree, and arrange a night when you two could get comfortable in Gale's tent.
more below...
Gale starts by sitting you in front of him, wrapping his arms securely around you. He starts by kissing you, massaging small circles into your skin, making you laugh as he whispers some sweet nonsense in your ear.
He is warm, gentle and affectionate as he eases you into a state of relaxation and security, just as you would any other intimate act.
He kisses the nape of your neck, and for the first time you notice the faintest hint of sharp fangs grazing your skin.
Gale tells you to tug on his arm four times if you wanted him to stop at any point.
Four? Why four? You had asked, as he explained his terms. Why not three?
Three? He had said. Three could mean anything. The humanoid physiology was way too easily molded to the routine of three. A comforting pattern, three words of a phrase never said aloud. Whereas four is nothing - a sufficient length to indicate urgency, without any other meaning.
You agree, and lean back against him, until finally, he punctures your skin.
Whereas Astarion gulps, draining you in a matter of seconds, Gale sips, patiently, delicately, as if masticating a well-aged wine. The icy feeling of blood loss seeps into you ever so gently, no harsher than a breath.
Gale's hand runs down the length of your arm as he drinks, smoothing out tension you didn’t know you had, before clasping your hand into his calloused palms. His thumb rubs over your interlaced fingers, and you relax into his touch.
Your eyelids flutter, losing yourself to the moment, to his soft noises of satisfaction as he drinks from you, the soft ambient hum in the air.
You're floating, yet Gale anchors you, and the stretch is breathtakingly delicious.
Stars spark in your vision and you are prepared to tug on his hand, but it's as if he notices you first. His teeth retract from your skin, and you fall, spineless and bloodless, into his firm embrace.
Gale presses a long, firm kiss onto your puncture wounds, letting the pressure cull the bleeding.
"You've done very well," he purrs into the nape of your neck, his beard lightly scratching the new-formed scabs on your skin. "Thank you. Truly."
He gently lowers you onto his bedroll, making sure to tuck you in under his warmest blankets, before slipping in next to you and pulling you on top of him.
"Rest now, love," he says, wrapping you securely into his embrace. Was it your imagination, or did his arms already feel stronger? "I'll take care of you until morning comes."

Ring of networked robot satellites in a kind of hive mind around an earthlike planet, with specific and harsh dictums against certain technologies and inventions. In a Tower of Babel-esque way, whenever someone on Earth manufactures a device or machine that is off-limits, a satellite - an angel - will descend from orbit - the heavens - to destroy the device, and a substantive portion of their manufacturing base.
They never act preventatively, only punitively, although they make efforts to avoid collateral loss of life. They're very precise. There's an entire field of study dedicated to identifying the exact limits of the Ring's tolerance, the potential meanings and ramifications of the forbidden advancements. This field has been able to extrapolate knowledge past the point of retribution, but it seems the Ring has no desire to punish knowledge, science, research, study, or data storage, but only implementation and actuation. A prevailing theory, based on predictive modelling for widespread manufacture of the forbidden technologies, is that the Ring seeks to prevent the self-annihilation of the human species.
Certain groups view this theory as an appalling naivete, and that we can't assume the Ring's intentions. Some theorize that the Ring is molding us into its vision of an ideal spacefaring civilization - whether counter or congruent to our own ideals. Others think we're an experiment, a glass jar of bugs for the Ring to study, or a crop of potential slaves to harvest once we've grown accustomed to compliance.
Optimists point out that only machines are destroyed, never humans, or information. They argue this suggests the Ring is doing no more than providing us an opportunity to learn from our mistakes, before they metastasize and destroy us.
Still others point to our first exposure to the Ring's existence. We had built our own machine god, a central intelligence that would have grown and learned until it was ready to lead our species to the stars - an advisor? A shepherd? An autocrat? That the Ring's descent and destruction of the fledgling deity of metal and light was self-defense, and nothing more. That there's an ecosystem above our level of existence that we can't comprehend and in which we have only unknowingly participated.
Zealots of the first theory, that which views the Ring as a benevolent and altruistic deity, enact the Ring's edicts to a greater extent than the Ring's satellite-angels seem inclined. They argue that the Ring's commandments do in fact extend to science and study, that once a device has been destroyed, so too should be the knowledge of how to build another. That we are failing a secret test by retaining forbidden knowledge, in a threat to the Ring by implication. Zealots of the first theory enact their theological arguments forcefully, conducting scientific espionage and sabotage all the way through to acts of terrorism committed against research centers and laboratories.
Despite an at times widespread public desire to destroy the Ring, out of fear or hatred, no notable attempts have been undertaken. Part of this is due to the obvious sheer futility of the idea - research indicates that the worldwide munitions stockpiles, properly coordinated and launched to strike simultaneously, would destroy no more than perhaps 11% of the Ring's materiel. Ongoing production efforts, even if they were not sabotaged preemptively by the Ring's typical satellite strikes, would be able to destroy no more than 1.5% per year after taking into account the Ring's capacity for repair and replacement. As this course would take nearly a century at minimum to implement, on top of being near-impossible to feasibly coordinate, the drain on our planet's resources would be severe. And for what benefit? Preliminary intelligence suggests the Ring would be replaced or supplemented by extrasolar reserves. And if the Ring is in fact neutral or benevolent, we'd be doing ourselves a disservice as well as destroying the most tangible source of alien contact our culture has ever seen.
A fringe theory suggests that immediate and thorough annihilation is what the Ring desires and is guiding us towards - that once we can destroy it without destroying ourselves, we will have graduated from their care and earned our place on the galactic stage. This is typically regarded as anywhere from fanciful to poetic nonsense.

I've been considering how to approach this post for a while, but I really wanted to say something about Jiaoqiu's condition, since I have a lot of thoughts. It's going to be pretty long, fair warning. It will mostly be a summary of canon information, supplemented with headcanon. I'll talk about the toxins involved, the injuries themselves, and the outcome after treatment. And yes, the blindness. You can jump to the very last paragraph to see me talk about how I plan to approach these from a roleplay perspective.
tl;dr Due to compounding factors, Jiaoqiu's recovery promises to be long, slow, and difficult. He really fucked himself over. As for his blindness, he can still see a difference between light and shadow, somewhat. Regardless of that fact, please do not include gags about facing the opposite direction during conversation in posts with me!
First and foremost, despite the giant, gaping holes in his chest, that actually wasn't the source of most of the damage. It would have been devastating in its own right, certainly; it was a killing blow by a highly seasoned killer. The main reason why it was especially catastrophic, however, is because Jiaoqiu himself ingested a large quantity of Tumbledust shortly beforehand, a potent toxin. Reading his medical report, it is emphasized that much of the treatment focused on detoxification. We can review quickly just what Tumbledust does:
What's most important here is the mention that it thins the blood. Something like that can make even minor injuries much more dangerous, because it becomes much more difficult to make bleeding stop. This excessive bleeding doesn't only apply to injuries! It can make bruising and other internal bleeds much more common, and can also manifest through, say blood in urine.
What this means in this case is that, with the severity of the wounds Jiaoqiu suffered, someone finding him immediately would struggle to save him, due to the sheer extent of blood loss that can occur. The other issue, however, is the fact that a bite from a Borisin is never simply a bite. They carry a venom known as Lupitoxin, which primarily stimulates a strong terror response. It can be assumed that this is not the only effect. It sounds similar to Irukandji syndrome to me, although the timeline of effect and intensity is different enough that I'd hesitate to draw any stronger connection between them than that. Still, there's precedent in the real world for venoms that cause fear in the victim.
I just want to take another moment to review the written extent of his injuries:
What we can take from this is that the Tumbledust not only contributed to catastrophic bleeding, but because of that was also responsible for a great deal of oxygen deprivation throughout his body, which in turn caused notable death of tissues. This includes the areas around the wounds themselves but also in his nerves. The dilated pupils and low body temperature can also be attributed to this.
Refer back to the Tumbledust screenshot and note that it mentions "the loss of all senses." We see here that the mechanism for this sensory loss is the as-stated neurological atrophy, and taking this into account, Jiaoqiu should be very, very thankful that it's only his vision that has suffered.
It's likely, actually, that other senses have also been diminished. I wouldn't be surprised if they were all greatly reduced at first, and only after a period of rest and recovery were restored. At least it can be assumed that it wasn't a terribly painful experience.
It's also worth noting that myelosuppression is mentioned; this means that, on top of severe blood loss, his body is struggling to produce more blood to replenish it. What this means is that, until this particular condition is resolved, he will struggle with tissue repair and healing, and he will continue to be more susceptible to excessive bleeding due to lack of platelets, low oxygen due to lack of red blood cells, and infection due to lack of white blood cells, among other things.
All of this is to say, once again, that it's the Tumbledust that really did him in... and in fact, it would not be entirely surprising to learn that the blood loss itself is to thank for the lack of other symptoms & preservation of other senses. I'm not going to go over the treatment plan. It contains some more mildly interesting insights into this condition, but it would mostly be rehashing what I've already stated: the toxicity was the primary agent in his life threatening condition, and many efforts were taken to detoxify his body. (No mention of blood transfusions or the like, which is interesting.)
As for his eyesight, as mentioned, it is optic nerve damage. What this means is his eyes themselves are unharmed, and can still see, but his brain does not have the ability to receive or process the information they're picking up. In many cases, this sort of affliction can be temporary, depending on the severity of the nerve damage. Many people are still able to tell the difference between light and dark, see colours or even vague shapes. However, it is not something that can be cured, and even in the best of cases, where there is remarkable recovery to the visual field, there will likely always be long lasting effects.
It's worth noting, however, that it was specifically mentioned in Dan Shu's diary that long-life species' nerves do not tolerate changes well, and so it's very likely from her accounts that even if Jiaoqiu would be considered to have the best probable odds of recovery otherwise (which he assuredly does not,) by virtue of his race, recovery of his eyesight may be beyond his reach. The rather final way he and Feixiao were speaking of it also seems to point in that direction.
We can review the "current state" and discharge instructions as well, just for fun:
So, with regards to roleplay: due to the nature of his condition, it stands to reason that the wounds can be mentioned for a decent while after the Wardance related quests, if one wishes. There's a good chance that it takes 6 months or more to make a full recovery in that regard. He does not have a very strong relationship with his emotions-- keep your eyes out for that post in the future-- and so a lot of the emotional fallout of this incident is, blissfully, lost on him. The fear does not reach him quite as keenly as it should, nor does the grief. Still, both do exist, and both do effect him considerably at times. I will likely not bring those up, as he is intensely private in that regard and will not be sharing those particular vulnerabilities with anyone. Finally, he is almost totally blind, but he can still tell the difference between areas of light and dark, if it's stark enough. It is not terribly reliable, however. He is quick to develop the ability to navigate and engage with his surroundings through sound and touch, and although he does still prefer to venture forth with someone else for the sake of speed and efficiency, regaining his independence and autonomy is of utmost importance to him. His main goal, of course, is working with this new challenge to return to doing the things he dedicated his life to, even if it will never be the same again.
#I will absolutely have to tweak this and add to it later... whoops. I only write things like this when I'm barely awake lol#Headcanon;

Having silly thoughts about the Gang again- except I dunno how I got there because I was discussing Pangaea with someone.
Valerian with Lupus-adjacent chronic illness and symptoms in canon- who needs consistency and high fiber in his diet to help manage flares-
Valerian in the modern!Au with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)- who is unfortunate enough to be told to avoid pastas and garlic and high sugar/sodium foods- Whole is told to limit sun exposure??? As a Geology/Archeology Major??? (I think that’s what we decided on???)
(Cutaneous Lupus Erythematous may also be appropriate)
(Because this can sometimes cause the calcification of soft tissues and all I can think about is Valerian growing his crystals)
Symptoms including: joint pain, skin rashes, swelling in feet and eyes because of affects to the kidneys, extreme fatigue, low fevers
Jiahui who consistently disassociates when left to her own devices and needs a grounding agent- who is more prone to zoning out or minor cases Overclocking as a Havoc resonator in general (though her own stability may vary, this is a general association with Havoc resonators)- Who also needs to keep a close watch on her prosthetic, check blood flow regularly, and take it in for repairs often with how beat up it can get
Jiahui who has a Dissociative Disorder in the modern!au- who needs a lot of help from her roommates to ground her in the present, give her fidgets and small tasks to do to keep her mind from drifting too far- Who paints her prosthetic with her roommates and has timers on her phone to give her leg a break :3
(Thinking specifically in the Derealization zone for her, the world feels unreal and foggy and dreamlike)
Symptoms including: Loss of time, fatigue, mental distance from her own actions, etc.
Sobeknesef who runs cold in canon because of his Glacio resonance, who needs constant heat and sun exposure, who experiences phantom pains in his missing wrist
Sobeknesef in the modern!Au with Orthostatic Hypotension, who’s always cold and mildly anemic and has to very carefully manage his diet and supplements as a Vegetarian. Who has Phantom Limb syndrome and regularly needs check he has adequate blood flow under his prosthetic-
Symptoms: Blurred vision, chest pains, dizziness, potential syncope (fainting), fatigue, mild anemia
Caladin in canon with constantly dried and cracked hands from over exposure to compressed Spectro- with arthritis in all of his joints from years of being stuck in one position (YEARS)- who needs to be careful about his own sun exposure because he overheats easily, absorbs a little too much Spectro naturally, and can quickly devolve into a heat stroke
Caladin in the modern!Au with Rheumatoid Arthritis and has to carefully manage his medication and sun exposure to prevent easier heat strokes and rashes- who happily joins Valerian in a Mediterranean Diet to reduce overall inflammation in their foods
Symptoms: tender and swollen joints, joint stiffness, fatigue, low grade fevers, and loss of appetite
-
Anyways. Don’t know how I got here, but chronic illness and conditions are always fun to think about :3

Reworked Character #6: Nadia Cassel
POTENTIAL TRIGGER WARNING: Viewer discretion is advised due to references to death, neglect, sterilisation, human experimentation, abuse, kidnapping, stalking, cannibalism, and SA.
Real name: Nadège Véronique Comtois
Alias: Perky Foodie
Occupation: Private First Class of the S.P.A.R.R.O.W.S., a tactical scientist for the Amadeus Syndicate (formerly), and an e-celeb supermodel (formerly)
Retirement plans: Become a professional forensic scientist and establish a fashion house
Special skills: Marksmanship, fashion modelling, forensic science, knowledge of biological hazards and visual art, and proficiency in piloting fighter aircraft, managing information, and encrypting passwords
Imperfect clone abilities: At her own will, she can rapidly regenerate missing limbs and organs, minimising blood loss and restoring her body to its original form without the need for medical aid. Her blood possesses extraordinary healing properties, capable of instantly curing non-lethal ailments, skin punctures, and all manner of burns. When Nadia opens her mouth wide and flexibly shifts her upper and lower front teeth, she reveals four syringe-like fangs, which are neatly concealed within the hard palate. These fangs enable her to consume the blood of other living beings and replenish her own lost vital fluid.
Her body is shielded from toxins and pathogens by a translucent, grease-like coating that kills threats on contact, leaving her skin with a subtle, luminous sheen. Notably, her pancreas, shielded by a thick layer of blubber, has the unique ability to produce a bile-infused silk. She utilises this silk to puke up robust, ensnaring nets that capture her victims and slowly burn them with its corrosive properties. Her fingernails are entirely fleshy, concealing retractable claws made of a ruby-hard greenish-yellow material.
On the palms of Nadia's hands are eyes with chartreuse irises, feline pupils, and serpentine eyelids. They grant her night vision and supplemental sight whenever she closes her facial eyes and opens the ones on her palms. They can secrete a venomous substance with a potency similar to that of a king cobra, which coats any surface with razor-sharp edges, forming a partially sticky, decently thin, translucent lime green layer. They can generate a temporary burst of blinding light to disorient their enemies and potentially damage their retinas.
Hobbies: Going on shopping sprees, studying passwords and aircraft models, drawing and painting fashionable designs, eating large quantities of food after each mission, and reading books on human and animal anatomy, genetic engineering, and forensics
Likes: Trevor, food challenges, the Walking Machines, maintaining her figure because she views it as a work of art, and sunbathing and enjoying a three-scoop ice cream cone at the beach
Dislikes: Annoying evaluations, getting unnecessarily dirty, not getting the chance to pilot the Slug Flyer or Slug Copter, people doubting her fashion advice and telling her to keep her mouth shut, and individuals that she views as scary and incapable of having fun (e.g. Eri and Tequila)
Favourite food: Sugary sweets
Favourite drink: Cotton candy soda
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Gender: Female
Age: 12 (in 2022), 18 (in 2028), 20 (in 2030), 22 (in 2032), 24 (in 2034), 31 (in 2041), 33 (in 2043), 34 (in 2044), and 37 (in 2047)
Blood type: B+
Weight: 120 lbs. (54 kg)
Design: She’s a 5’ 4” (162.56 cm) French ectomorph with a gracefully thin body, small breasts, curvaceous hips, sloping shoulders, and a serpentine tongue covered in microscopic spikes. She has limestone skin and possesses feline-like pupils that transform into vertical slits only when she opens her mouth wide enough to reveal her concealed fangs. Her eyes are heterochromatic with her right eye being a warm amber, while her left eye is grey-green with brown flecks. Nadia has a few moles: one on the right side of her chin; one near the corner of her left eye; two above her left breast; one on the back of her right hand; and one slightly below her right knee.
She has raspberry red hair with voluminous curls that reach the middle of her upper back, but she often ties it into two pigtails with stretchy reseda green hair bands. She has a silvery-pink birthmark on her left shoulder, almost shaped like a crescent moon with three protruding spikes. A large circular patch on her upper back is stripped of skin, exposing crimson muscles and purplish veins, and her greenish-yellow spine is partially protruding.
Her military gear consists of a metal dog tag necklace with her name, an avocado green tank top, and the same knee pads and socks as Nadia Cassel from Metal Slug 4. She wears Argentine blue neoprene gloves, reseda green leather belt with a snap-on silver buckle, and a champagne-hued vest with the S.P.A.R.R.O.W.S. insignia on the back. She wears navy blue army cargo pants tucked into twilight lavender combat boots with spiked soles. She also wears a dirty white lab coat, a case for her stun gun, and a gun holster for a handgun. Underneath her uniform, she wears an identical bikini to Everlasting Summer Nadia's.
The pockets of Nadia’s vest carry around a pocket knife, a notepad, two pens (one red and one blue), a silver-white cellphone with a quicksand case filled with emerald and seafoam green glitter, and a bag of fruity gummy bears. In the pockets of her lab coat, she carries a caramel-filled chocolate candy bar in silver wrapping and a small pine-wood box of strawberry frosted sugar cookies. She wears a forest green waist pack containing a bottle of laxatives and two blood packs for snacking. Attached to the left side of her belt is a square-shaped pouch with a clear plastic window, showcasing balls of bubblegum and lollipops in different colours inside. The pouch features an amaranth pink outline, feline ears with bluish-white fur, a pistachio-hued strap with a black button clasp, and a metallic silver zipper.
Over her tank top, she dons a Soldier Plate Carrier System (SPCS) with a MultiCam pattern, which carries around her walkie-talkie and ammo for other firearms. She wears two dark brown bandoliers that cross over her body in an X-shape, each holding pineapple grenades. Nadia carries around a navy blue load-bearing backpack that contains camping equipment, portable ammo boxes, a canteen full of water, landmines, smoke bombs, an Iron Lizard, a 7.62mm AR-10 Autorifle, a medical kit, a DOLL bodysuit, and liquid and pill bottles of cures and deadly chemicals. She carries Melekhai, an orange-and-white cat plushie with blue eyes and an emerald green business tie, along with greenish-black gas masks reminiscent of those worn by the Ptolemaic Army special forces, to distribute to her teammates in need of one. She also carries around a painting kit, her mint green sketchbook with bubblegum pink polka dots, and a set of drawing pencils with two erasers and a sharpener.
She also wields a specialised rifle that fires needles containing transformative liquids, capable of altering humans into simian or mantis creatures. Additionally, she carries purplish rolling bombs that contain mummifying breath and throwable canisters filled with a zombie-inducing orangish phlegm that explodes upon impact. She wears safety goggles, star-shaped lavender spinel earrings that dangle from her ears, and a non-dangling peridot belly ring piercing.
Character summary: She boasts swift wit and inventive verbal humour, often outsmarting her foes with clever sabotage tactics. She's exceptionally skilled at marksmanship and takes great pride in this, often boldly showcasing her impressive aim when prompted or when she's in a good battle mood. Despite being a childish, happy-go-lucky, and sassy goofball, she has a surprisingly intelligent and cynical side, but she loves to indulge her silly and jubilant nature. Due to her fondness for her exceptional intellect, she sometimes perceives other people as “intellectually inferior” to herself. She can be overly energetic when interacting with new people and does her best to cheer them up, even if she sometimes comes across as oblivious and a bit of a dunce. She conceals her bitterness and wariness of strangers behind a facade of playful teasing, mischievous pranks, sarcastic remarks, and a charming smile. She has a tendency to pout adorably, especially when someone disrupts her plans or when she's torn about something and doesn't want to admit it.
She cherishes her friendship with Trevor, who is her first true best friend. She appreciates his laid-back nature and ability to understand her effortlessly. She enjoys occasionally poking fun at others in hopes of making him laugh hard with her sense of humour and Tarma's playful jabs. Over time, she has developed subtle romantic feelings for him, largely due to his hacking expertise and the enjoyable quality time they share. However, she's very skilled at concealing these emotions.
She's a friendly, humorous, and talkative busybody with a passion for creative expression and thrill-seeking adventures, which give her a taste of what it truly means to live. She enjoys taking her friends on shopping sprees, blending social time with style consultations. She demonstrates her loyalty to her friends by nurturing their relationships and showing platonic affection, often showering them with hugs and kisses. She's a fearless advocate for herself and others, refusing to tolerate bullying or any form of mistreatment, and will boldly speak out against it. She uses Melekhai for stress relief and often talks to the plushie about her frustrations and disappointments, and is willing to share him with others who need some comfort. Whenever the mission instructions bore her, she often has to fight off drowsiness and doesn't pay attention to most of what's being said.
She has a fondness for assigning nicknames to those around her, including friends and foes alike. She often prefers to call people by the nicknames she has for them. However, there are times when she uses the nicknames they commonly go by or their usual names if she's stumped on the perfect nickname. Rarely, she may refer to those with assigned nicknames by their common names, but this only occurs when she's in a serious mood or has a brief moment of forgetfulness. She's surprisingly skilled at cracking complex passwords, but she has a tendency to make a few silly mistakes, which leads her to doubt her encryption abilities. She sometimes whines and complains when faced with tedious tasks, such as frustratingly evaluations of the battlefield, dealing with people who make fun of her, and struggling with forgotten passwords.
Despite efforts to maintain her supermodel figure, she has developed mild bulimia nervosa; while trying to resist the urge, she sometimes purges after eating. Additionally, she struggles with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), manifesting as a fear of contamination, anxiety about misplacing valuable items, and a need for order and balance. She also experiences distressing thoughts, including fears of losing control, harming loved ones, and intrusive thoughts about sexual subjects. Whenever she hears about the death of children, child abuse, or unethical experiments—or believes that any terrible thing someone has told her involves one of these issues—she becomes visibly shaken. Her mind goes numb, and she withdraws socially for a couple of hours, seeking solace in the peacefulness of nature as she succumbs to a melancholic state.
She takes a disturbing pleasure in obliterating her enemies, often letting out a maniacal laugh as she does so. Her humour is a unique blend of lighthearted and dark, peppered with French phrases, occasional broken English, and sprinkled with Korean expressions that Trevor has taught her. Outside of her military work, she often dodges unwanted tasks by concocting elaborate schemes, frequently with Trevor's help, to avoid them. However, her plans often backfire, resulting in trouble for neglecting her duties. Moreover, she has a tendency to slack off during missions, especially when she becomes bored and her attention wanders to more exciting things. When she gets into trouble, especially when it involves people she has convinced to join her antics, she often tries to deflect responsibility by feigning innocence and shifting the blame onto others.
She possesses a fairly compassionate, laid-back disposition, which she only reveals to those closest to her. She's overconfident about her looks and seems unfazed by how people react to her inhuman features, yet she draws the line at absurd and unattainable beauty standards. She's deadly serious when needed and isn't afraid to intimidate people or berate individuals for doing something irrational or dangerous. She has a strong disdain for individuals who exhibit predatory behaviour, such as perverts and stalkers, and is unafraid to call them out and mock their actions mercilessly. She despises unnecessary secrecy and eugenics, opposing the lack of transparency and the racist underpinnings of genetic manipulation aimed at "improving" human populations.
She's quite gluttonous and becomes quickly hangry when she's extremely hungry and there's nothing to eat at the moment. She's an eavesdropper with a curious habit of inspecting, poking, probing, and even biting anything that piques her interest, including people. She grapples with touch starvation, feeling emotionally isolated from others, and deeply dislikes being overlooked or ignored by those around her. She harbours intense resentment towards her mother due to her neglectful behaviour and excessive focus on satisfying scientific curiosity, which comes at the expense of considering others' needs and forming meaningful connections with them. She’s appalled by her mother's callous disregard for the pain she inflicts on others as well as the secrecy surrounding their family's lineage and her status as an imperfect clone.
She seems to have a special connection with Ralf as they share a healthy and affectionate big brother-little sister dynamic. They understand and appreciate each other's thirst for having a good time, but Ralf also encourages Nadia to take her responsibilities seriously when needed. They love to engage in fun, lighthearted antics during missions, even if it risks alerting nearby enemies and putting themselves in harm's way. They often rope Tarma into their mischief, which he eagerly accepts, seemingly unfazed by the potential consequences. Nadia values how Ralf and Tarma accept her bubbly personality without judgment, unlike Eri and Tequila, who often try to dampen her spirits.
She's captivated by Tyra's makeup skills and willingly lets her experiment with new techniques, trusting her completely. Interestingly, she's surprised to discover that Tyra genuinely admires her, and this admiration fills her with pride because she has a deep-seated desire for respect and validation from others. Nadia also delights in hearing Walter enthusiastically share his zoology knowledge and praise Marco, finding his childlike excitement endearing.
She can't help but worry about Marco due to his overly serious nature and struggle to express his true emotions. Despite his frequent annoyance, she tries her best to lift his spirits, attempting to distract him from work. In particular, she enjoys taking Marco on shopping trips, hoping to help him relax and get to know him better on a personal level. Nadia is extremely close to MS-Alice, considering her a dear friend. She's always willing to lend a listening ear to MS-Alice's frustrations and doubts, and the two often engage in casual, meandering conversations. She finds the concept of a sentient AI fascinating, and MS-Alice's unique existence only adds to her appeal. Nadia also enjoys offering her fashion advice, encouraging her to explore different styles and discover what works best for her.
Backstory: Nadège Véronique Comtois was born on August 6, 2010 in Quimper, France. She was created in a test tube using advanced Martian cloning technology that was carefully salvaged during a confidential investigation, utilising the DNA of Ghyslaine Laëtitia Comtois, her clone mother and the founder of the Amadeus Syndicate, in an underground laboratory. Initially, Ghyslaine's interest in Nadège was rooted in scientific curiosity. She bioengineered certain biological abilities to give her a more combative edge, hoping to steer her down a militaristic path. She conducted psychological and sociological experiments to explore the similarities and differences between them. Ghyslaine would overfeed Nadège, only to discover that her daughter had an abnormal metabolism, making it challenging for her to gain weight. Unintentionally, Ghyslaine fueled Nadège's affection for junk food.
At age 7, Ghyslaine subjected Nadège to a disturbing and unethical experiment, forcibly inducing puberty and sterilising her daughter as part of a eugenics test. During this period, Nadège longed to experience the outside world and connect with her clone mother. Unfortunately, Ghyslaine's focus on research led her to neglect Nadège’s emotional needs. She treated her more like a guinea pig than a human being, providing minimal motherly comfort and attention.
At the age of 9, Ghyslaine decided it was time for Nadège to explore the outside world, which filled her clone daughter with excitement. Together, Nadège experienced her first-ever outing to a shopping district and explored several notable attractions in Quimper, including the Breton County Museum, the Fine Arts Museum, and the Faience Museum. She received Melekhai as a reward for being well-behaved, and she still holds onto the plushie very dearly since it was the first heartfelt gift her clone mother gave her. Her experience with the outside world sparked Nadège’s curiosity in modelling and the creative arts.
However, her mother had other plans. Ghyslaine envisioned Nadège following in her footsteps as a renowned scientist and eventual heir to the Amadeus Syndicate. To nurture this ambition, Ghyslaine frequently presented Nadège with books on biology and chemistry, encouraging her to delve into the sciences. She encouraged Nadège to cover the unusual features on her palms and upper back by wearing neoprene gloves and modest clothing in order to avoid drawing unnecessary attention or judgement from others.
By the age of 11, Nadège had become proficient in biology and chemistry, thanks to her mother's guidance. She began attending school after being previously homeschooled by Ghyslaine and other Amadeus Syndicate scientists. Although her school years were uneventful, Nadia occasionally faced bullying due to her intense interests in science, modelling, and the creative arts, as well as her unusual habit of wearing neoprene gloves to conceal her hand-eyes.
However, the bullying ceased after rumours circulated that she had intimidated and bitten a school bully by revealing her hidden snake fangs—a claim that was surprisingly true. Nadège’s clone mother was indifferent to her academic pursuits but drew a firm line at harming others and divulging confidential information about the Amadeus Syndicate. When Ghyslaine learned about this incident, she smacked her in the face, then confined her to a padded room with two blood bags and a fresh corpse for three hours. As dinnertime approached, Nadège's hunger grew, leading her to make the desperate decision to consume the contents of the blood bags and feed on the fresh corpse.
During her high school years, Nadège frequently skipped classes to go shopping, feeling that she already possessed a strong grasp of the material being taught in her courses. To avoid arousing suspicion about her exceptional intelligence, she intentionally performed poorly on a few tests. During this time, she experienced significant weight gain, which unfortunately led to bullying and negative comments about her appearance. However, she handled the situation with confidence and resilience, effectively standing up for herself and dismissing the hurtful remarks. After completing high school, she promptly enrolled in a two-year college art program, specialising in fashion drawing, before pursuing forensic science at the university level.
While pursuing her forensic studies at university, Nadège unexpectedly catapulted to fame as an e-celebrity supermodel, adopting the pseudonym Nadia Cassel. Driven by a passion for fashion and curiosity about the modelling world, she embarked on this venture independently, without management, and solely for her own enjoyment. Although her rise to fame was modest at best, she didn't mind because she revelled in the opportunity to be herself and try something new. As her university studies grew increasingly demanding and stressful, she found it challenging to balance her modelling career. Seeking support, she hired a model manager, who turned out to be unexpectedly kind and helpful. He broadened her knowledge of the fashion and modelling industries.
However, as her fame as an e-celeb supermodel grew, she started to attract unwanted attention from predatory individuals, which caused her significant distress. Her situation intensified when she inadvertently revealed her hand-eyes and exposed spine during a livestream, leading to an escalation of online harassment. After a deranged fan attempted to kidnap and sexually assault her, she empowered herself by obtaining a gun licence and rigorously training to use a firearm, becoming a fearsome markswoman.
The stress of her forensic studies and the pressures of being a supermodel took a toll on Nadia's mental health, leading to the development of OCD and bulimia nervosa. Her struggles with maintaining a strict diet, keeping her model-worthy figure, and need for control became overwhelming. Her modelling manager grew concerned about her unusually voracious appetite, fixation on her body weight, and increasing frustration when things didn't go as planned. He advised her to consider taking a step back from modelling or quitting altogether to focus on her well-being.
After a two-day break, Nadège made the decision to quit modelling as her mental health issues began to impact her studies. However, she kept the name of her e-celeb persona because she liked it. Although she has left the world of modeling, she remains in touch with her former modeling manager, and they have become good friends. After a long day of designing clothes, she recalls a disturbing nighttime incident in which she defended herself against a stalker who attempted to assault and cannibalise her in her own home. The attack forced her to involuntarily consume the stalker's blood when she bit his hand in self-defence, revealing a sadistic streak she never knew she possessed.
Once her forensic studies have been completed, Nadia prioritised fitness to maintain her physical well-being. After learning about the Regular Army’s vigorous exercise programs and their pressing need for information management positions, Nadia decided to enlist in their tactical operations. Following her military training, Ghyslaine granted Nadia permission to join the Amadeus Syndicate as a tactical scientist. She proved to be highly successful, making a name for herself as she pushed the boundaries of scientific understanding in biology and chemistry. Nadia supplied the Regular Army with gas masks, stable smoke bombs, and advocated for training cadets and recruits on the dangers of biological hazards.
While searching Ghyslaine's office for documents for a chemical experiment, she stumbled upon classified test results revealing her true nature: an imperfect clone. The discovery shook her to her core. Further investigation led her to her clone mother's journal, exposing a dark family legacy of illicit collaborations with government agencies, inhumane wildlife experimentation, and development of devastating bioweapons and malicious computer viruses. Most alarming, however, was Ghyslaine's megalomaniacal plan for global domination and self-deification. Terrified and disgusted, she contemplated abandoning the Amadeus Syndicate, yet for mysterious reasons, she chose to stay and remain silent about their heinous actions.
During her work on a cure for a disease in South Africa, Nadia uncovered disturbing information during a private conversation with Oghma at lunchtime in a relatively unknown café: Ghyslaine had sexually assaulted Marco while he was injured. This traumatic event would have far-reaching consequences, severely straining relations between the Regular Army and the Amadeus Syndicate. Horrified by Ghyslaine's actions, she quietly ditched the Amadeus Syndicate, dedicating herself to defending Earth against global threats. She vaguely recalls attempting to poison Ghyslaine by lacing her bitter coffee with powdered cyanide, but the plan backfired when another scientist accidentally drank from the cup instead.
While she was still working for the Amadeus Syndicate, she was initially oblivious to Wysteria's existence because her mother kept it a secret, knowing that if she found out, she would strongly oppose it and potentially leave the organization much sooner than desired. Ghyslaine even went so far as to forbid her daughter from entering the Amadeus Mainframe Base, fully aware of her curiosity and the problems it could cause. However, once she discovered the confidential files detailing the heinous activities in her mother's office, she learned about Wysteria's existence. When she left the Amadeus Syndicate, she shared her findings about their crimes with the Regular Army high command, which led to a temporary conflict between the two organisations three months before the Great Morden War.
She eventually joined the S.P.A.R.R.O.W.S. after befriending Fio and earning a sliver of respect from Eri. This was due to her impressive performance as a potential agent, where she swiftly identified the chemical composition of a new illicit drug that had been baffling the Intelligence Agency and Regular Army scientists. She achieved this by obtaining crucial documents and conducting rigorous, ethical experiments. She also encrypted an extremely difficult password that the enemy was using to secure their illegal database, making it challenging for even the best codebreakers in the military to crack. Following the Survival Island Occupation, she provided crucial assistance to the hostages and kidnapped cadets who had been transformed into grotesque simian and mantis creatures, administering cures that successfully restored them to their human form.

The Holy Trinity of Fear-Entity Based Media

HELLO! i am returning to elaborate on this subject because i've been thinking about it for literal WEEKS ever since i made the connection while starting TMA.
So, let's explore this venn diagram in more depth, shall we?
(Apologies for the length of this post but I have MANY thoughts. I know it's long, but please hear me out lol)
First, I want to talk about the world-building similarities since they're what I first noticed and spurred this entire thing.
Imagine the following explanation in terms of the venn diagram above.
Chainsawman:
A Japanese action/horror manga
A universe where fear-based entities (called "devils") exist. Each devil correlates to the fear of a specific concept (with infinite possibilities ranging from tomatoes to the future). They are the embodiment of the fear their name represents.
Each devil thus has its own special abilities and 'theming' associated with its name.
The existences and power levels of the devils fluctuate based on what the the populace is afraid of at the time and how scared they are. They survive and feed off of human's fear.
The devils exist in another 'place' (Hell) that is separate but linked to our world. However, they can manifest in the real world to attack and spread further fear (and if they die there, they are sent back to Hell in a weakened state). It is currently unknown as to how devils cross over from Hell.
However, the devils CAN in fact permanently die- if they are forgotten entirely by humanity (and thus run out of fear to exist/feed on)
There are a few special types of devils: 1. Primal fears, which embody ancient instinctual fears (darkness, falling) and 2. the Four Horsemen: (Control/manipulation, war, famine, and death), the most powerful of the devils.
There are also many ways that humans can serve, be linked to, and be embodiments of these devils. Beings known as "fiends" (corpses possessed by devils), cases of devil transformations (humans who make contracts with devils and are transformed into monsters to do their bidding) and "hybrids" (humans and devils fused). However each way results in great personal cost/change, like the loss of humanity.
The existence of these devils is a common, well-known fact of society, and one of the main causes of death in this world.
There is a governmental agency tasked with combating devil attacks. The main leader we interact with is a character who manipulates the protagonist throughout the entire series to help them achieve their vision for the world. They are revealed to secretly be one of the devils the characters were supposed to be fighting, and is heavily associated with eye imagery.
Ordem Paranormal
A Brazilian live-streamed horror TTRPG (table-top roleplaying game)
(Disclaimer: for this one, I have only had the chance to watch OPQ and Cellbit's onstream explanations of the lore, so I tried to supplement with the wiki as best I could without getting too spoiled. If I got anything wrong or you think I missed anything, please tell me! I'd love to get your guy's insight on this)
A universe where there are 5 elements (Death, Energy/Chaos, Blood, Knowledge, and Fear) that exist in a place separate but linked to our world known as "the Other Side."
Each element is associated with different monsters, abilities, and general characteristics. Death is associated with distortions in the passage of time, spirals, and an ultimate end. Blood is the element of intense emotions, both positive and negative. Knowledge is the element of discovering, knowing, recording. It wants to preserve balance between the elements since it likes reality as it is. Energy/Chaos is unpredictability, unreality, and transformation. It mostly serves its own entertainment. Fear is the most mysterious- it is the source of all paranormal and has existed since the dawn of humanity- it is of the unknown and the infinite.
Individuals can connect to and form pacts with each of these entities (except for Fear). They gain different supernatural abilities depending on which, but all result in great personal cost and change- usually becoming less and less human in a variety of ways.
The barrier between the two worlds can be weakened through fear. Cultists take advantage of this and attempt to perform rituals that would break the membrane and bring these entities over to our world.
These elements can also just manifest into our world in a variety of different ways, like monsters, paintings, artifacts, etc.
Tthere are independent organizations around the globe who work to prevent these rituals and maintain order. However, the existence of this "other side" and the entities is not known by the wider public.
The organization we follow is headed by an elderly character who has dedicated every single aspect of their life to fighting these elements, stopping these rituals, and maintaining the balance. However he is willing to form connections with those around him, and violence isn't always his first option.
The Magnus Archives
A British horror/tragedy podcast
A universe where entities known as "the fears" or "the dread powers" exist next to our world (separate but linked). Each entity is the embodiment of a different fear that the humans (and animals) of earth feel.
The fears are typically broad (covering multiple specific fears under a wider category) and when manifesting can blend into one another. A good analogy to explain it is the color wheel.
The single entity known as fear has been around since the beginning of the world. However, as humanity developed more complex thought, they split off into different aspects (though they are still in some ways linked).
At the time of the series there are 15 entities (a full list here). The existences and power levels of the entities fluctuate based on what the the populace is afraid of at the time and how scared they are. They survive and feed off of human's fear.
The entities can permanently die, but only if the organisms of the world did too, as there would be no more fear left for them to consume.
These fears can manifest in our world as a number of different paranormal happenings, from monsters to books. They manifest in order to cause fear to feed themselves.
Most of the entities are near mindless- they simply operate to feed, with little to no future planning (with the exception of The Spider, the fear of control and manipulation, whose entire thing is future planning.)
Individuals can connect to and form pacts with each of these entities to become individuals known as Avatars. They gain different supernatural abilities depending on which fear they connect too, but all result in great personal cost, change, and the overall loss of humanity.
Followers of the same fear often gather to form cults. When a fear gains enough power, its avatars usually attempt to perform various rituals that would manifest their entity in our world. This would result in our world transforming into a hellscape of fear for that entity to gorge itself on. (There are also two fears that do not attempt rituals as they prefer reality the way it is. )
We follow an independent organization tasked with recording and categorizing the encounters of individuals with these paranormal events. The two leaders we interact with the most are
A Character who manipulates the protagonist throughout the entire series to help them achieve their vision for the world. They are revealed to secretly be one of the Avatars the characters were supposed to be fighting, and is heavily associated with eye imagery.
An elderly character who has dedicated every single aspect of their life to fighting these entities, stopping these rituals, and maintaining the balance. (However she is unwilling to become attached to those around her, and will ruthlessly do whatever it takes to accomplish her goals.)
Ok, so if you read through these explanations you can hopefully see many of the connections that I drew. The TLDR is: these three pieces of media all feature fear-powered entities that exist in a world separate but connected to our own, but can manifest here in a variety of ways and each have their own unique theming/powers. People can form pacts and become connected to these entities and gain supernatural abilities, but that often results in the loss of their humanity. Rituals are performed by the people connected to these entities in order to manifest them more into our world. Finally, all three stories are centered around the members of an organization tasked with dealing with these entities in some way.
(Also, if you combine the world-building of CSM and OP, it basically results in the world-building of TMA, which is that thought that originally inspired this post)
However, these are just baseline world-building connections. When I first posted about the idea of this venn diagram, I got some tags from @wasabi-ribs proposing a connection between the very themes of these shows in a way I hadn't even thought about.
While I don't feel as though I can accurately speak to the themes of Ordem as much as the other two, I was doing some research (*cough* scrolling tumblr) and saw this post from @just-an-enby-lemon.
And honestly, that sounds pretty damn similar to what I consider to be the main themes of CSM and TMA, aka:
Love and connection alone can't save you, but that doesn't mean they are unimportant, especially in a world full of so much fear, trauma and loss of control and perhaps even your humanity.
Also, the general questioning of what exactly it means to be human, and my age old favorite of the indomitable human spirit even in the face of unfathomnable horror and tragedy.
What is the conclusion or point of this post? I'm not entirely sure. But I wanted to acknowledge the beauty in how such different mediums can be used by people of three completely different cultures to discuss eerily similar themes of humanity and connection (and also very spooky fear entities).
Thank you so much for reading this far and please feel free to add onto this post with anything you think I missed or got wrong. I love talking about the connections between my favorite pieces of media with people! :)
(Also, apologies if this came across as incoherent or rambly in any way, turns out it’s a lot harder to explain this in a concise way in writing than to just have the thoughts floating around in your head lol)
