In the low mountain pass there lies a peaceful pond, its waters gently ruffled by the breezed funneled through the grey rocks, between the wide spread of the lands below and the high valleys where the spring grass grows so rich and green. Every year the shepherds move their flocks into the uplands where the sheep spend the summer growing fat on the lush pasture, to be brought back down for shearing when the winds of winter come whistling down the mountains.
But the pond is peaceful only from afar, and the shepherds move their flocks past as quickly as they can, fearful of the terror that lies watchful in the water. Or so it has been, these many years...
"No more! No more will our boys dread the trip to the summer valleys, no more will we lose our sheep twice a year to the beast of the pass! I say enough! Enough of fear, men! Take up the javelin, take up the pelte shield, and follow me, and let us make an end to the beast, make the pass safe for our flocks and our shepherds!"

A diorama I put together for the local game store's year long painting contest. This is my final entry and I'm stoked at how well it came out. All of this stuff I've painted/made in the last month. I'm very proud of myself for this one.

I had a productive 1st of the year and painted this 'ere slinger! I'm not going to be finishing a model a day all year, but this was a fun way to spend a day off.
For anyone who's curious, he's converted from a Victrix Greek slinger. It turns out I had a bunch of them in a box under my sofa.

The floppy hat isn't the sharpest sculpting I've ever done, but I think he painted up alright.

Throwback Thursday: huscarls with dane axes
This week I am showcasing some Huscarls armed with Dane Axes, these are for Saga but like my other Anglo-Saxon/Anglo-Dane models will be repurposed for Lion Rampant.
The models are plastic models by Victrix, who I think produce some of the best models I have ever seen. The shield designs are not as intricate as I would like but but my hand is not as steady as it once was.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hope you have enjoyed viewing the models as much as I enjoyed painting them.
Anyway until next time
happy hobbying!

Victrix Greek Peltasts done!!!! Love how these guys turned out. First Victrix models I've painted and I'm loving them. Though the mold lines were pretty intense.

These guys are going to be elements of a diorama and THEN. They will be part of my eventual Thracian army for Dragon/Lion Rampant.

Venus Victrix
So lately I’ve been making posts on artwork featuring Lady Aphrodite or Lady Venus (they’re often depicted the same). So far, I’ve covered two paintings titled The Birth of Venus, the ones by Botticelli and Cabanel. Today, we have a statue titled Venus Victrix by Antonio Canova. Please let me know your favorite artistic depictions of Lady Aphrodite or Venus if you’d like me to cover them!
Antonio Canova
Antonio Canova was an Italian sculptor born November 1, 1757 in the Republic of Venice, and died on October 13, 1822 in Lombardy-Venetia. He was often regarded as one of the greatest of the Neoclassical artists, and was famous for his marble statues such as Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss, The Three Graces, Napoleon as Mars the Peacemaker, Venus Victrix, and George Washington.
Description of the Statue
Venus lays on a sort of bed, nude with some sort of fabric covering her bottom half. She holds an apple, alluding to the judgement of Paris. The goddess’s appearance is modeled after Pauline Bonaparte, an imperial French princess and sister to Napoleon.
About the Statue
The Venus Victrix was created from 1805-1808 out of white marble. It was commissioned by the model’s husband right after their marriage. It is now displayed in the Galleria Borghese, in Rome, Italy.
Fun Facts
- Canova was originally commissioned to paint Bonaparte fully clothed as the virgin goddess Diana, but the model objected, saying nobody would believe she’s a virgin.
-There is debate on whether or not Bonaparte actually posed nude, and she responded saying she did but it wasn’t a problem as Antonio Canova wasn’t “a real man” and it was too hot in the room to wear clothes. This could have been a way to “stir things up”, as she often liked to do
- Pauline Bonaparte was said to be related to Venus through her son, Aeneas
- The statue originally had a mechanism in the base that would rotate it so someone could see all angles of it without moving
- In 2020, a tourist broke off some of the toes by sitting on the statue while posing for a selfie
I hope you learned something, I certainly did! This is a beautiful statue, and there were some very interesting things I didn’t know. Please, if you have any artwork of Lady Aphrodite (or Venus) you would like me to cover, please let me know. Love y’all 🫶 /p

Workbench update!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Up first, some Gallic cavalry I’ve been working on to ally with the Carthaginians, the Romans, or the Greeks. (Really anyone… there were a lot of Gaelic people at that time in A LOT of places.
Im happy with their color scheme, being quite bright but not too vibrant (except maybe the yellow)
Up next are Greek Peltasts:
Tumblr media
I love how quickly these guys paint up! I’ve elected to use various earth tones for their clothing on accounts of light infantry being of a (typically) poorer economic class at this time, and to my mind brown and grey will help hide you better in rocky terrain than bright blue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can also spot some phalangite shields in working on. I’ve been sitting on em for a long time and it’s about time I finished them.
All these models I’ve been working on are from Warlord and Victrix. Overall like the warlord Macedonians better, but victrix just does plastic so well. I don’t think I’ll go back to warlord for anything other than Macedonians.
