Personal Inventory of my health-
Recently a typical day of eating looks like-
The last 2 months I ate really healthy because I didn't have money and relied on food banks. I was making great meals for cheap like lentil pasta sauce, chickpea curries, Lentil curries, chickpea soups, yellow split pea soup, vegetable chilis and so on. I made corn tortillas from scratch, tamale pie, corn bread.
However, I do have money now, so I need to be careful. We bought dumplings, fried vegan chicken patties (but I did eat them with whole wheat buns) and things that cost more money than beans (and a lot more calories too!.)
Coffee (powdered creamer, 2% lactose free milk, and whipped cream (my guilty pleasure right now. I'm not going to give that up right now). I was putting sugar in it again :/ but I gave that up again.
Before I ALWAYS skipped breakfast,
Now I am trying to eat breakfast- eggs and whole wheat bread product like English muffin or daves bread. Sometimes a vegan sausage.
Or oatmeal that I made in a crock pot and froze is muffin tins. 1) apple cinnamon 2) sweet potato, chia seeds, hemp seeds oatmeal.
Sometimes, I add an egg or two on top of the oatmeal.
Lunch I was having things like pollock fish, vegetables, and quinoa (ok that is an overestimate because I only made like 5 and I still have one in the freezer lol!)
Dinner has been the items I talked about above, a lot of vegetarian bean based meals.
So when I very first went to the nutritionist a few years ago, I was eating out at least 5 days a week, some days 2-3 times a day. This is when my MIL was funding it. My mil is like 500 lbs, and she just got a diabetes diagnosis, so she is TRYING to eat healthier. Even before she started, she cut us off of her door dash orders.
I pretty much have cut my restaurant eating down to 3-4 times a month. That probably can't go down.
This month (November) I had a feast with my friends (pretty healthy things but a lot of food and some sweets), pizza (2 slices sausage and mushrooms with a Mary's side salad with blue cheese so not that healthy but kinda trying), and then we are going to have Thanksgiving (that I am making a lot of pies for).
Next month, December, I will have Jaquies birthday party, going to have brunch with Karen who is moving, Christmas, and my friend Heather's birthday.
Before me eating healthier (lost 6 lbs this month - back to the same weight from my cruise). I know some of my troubled eating patterns were eating a lot of red meat - steaks, pot roast, and tri tips - and I would eat a lot of it. One of the reasons I went vegetarian when I was younger is because I was eating a lot of fast food and knew when I was near meat I ate a lot of it. I did it to limit my access to these foods I over did. Now, with my other recent bad eating habits, I was not eating a lot of raw vegetables, which I need to eat more of.
I am not really a snacker, especially not processed foods and I never buy store bought sweets, however it was Halloween last month which did mean there was a lot of candy in the house that I was eating. A few nights the last few weeks I also ate a lot of ritz crackers and cheese. (I bought a big box but I do need to shift my shopping habit to whole wheat crackers).
For drinks- I don't drink soda and juices very often. In fact I don't drink a lot of liquids at all :/ including water. Recently I started drinking bubble water but I know getting actual water in me is a goal I need to have.
For alcohol, I'm down to a couple times a month. On DnD night I had some meed and some beer. Kevin has been giving me a beer more often as he is back to drinking beer almost every night :/.
Next month I do want to have a Moscow mule as I just bought a copper mug and I want to have a drink with lunch on our spa day and one or two at Heather's birthday dinner so there is st least 3 occasions next month I know I will drink.
Probably only one in Jan, Feb, and 2 in march. So 7 times in the next 4 months.
When it comes to meal prep I have fallen in love with using my freezer. I try to cook several meals during the weekend, freeze them, and then eat on them during the week or even later down the road as they can last in the freezer for 3 months.
When it comes to tracking food, I have not been doing it :/ but when I do I like to use cronometer and take photos of my meals.
Portion control is absolutely a spot I need to work on. When I was actively losing weight earlier this year I was finding hacks on how to volume eat which was nice BUT it did not solve my portion control problem especially when I stopped focusing on eating healthy.
Another thing that I found last time I was losing weight that really helped me- FREQUENT weight-ins- Daily weigh ins. They were great for staying motivated and seeing trends and not being scared of ups and downs. If I am not weighing in regularly it means I am not being health conscious. I know there were times when it became very disheartenting but even that was because it was showing me pitfalls in my habits. During that time I was losing during the week just to gain it back over the weekend drinking alcohol. I cant be mad at the insight in the long run.
3) Nutrition-
When I am not focusing on weight loss I do not eat a lot of fruits. I also do not eat a lot of raw vegetables. I would say I eat a lot of vegetables no matter what. We eat a lot of vegetables with breakfast (onion, mushrooms, spinach, zucchini, bell pepper, tomatoes.. stuff like that with eggs) and we also eat a lot of vegetable-based soups.
I do notice when I try my diet has more raw vegetables like cucumbers. (Kevin hates cucumbers) .
4) Physical activity/ lifestyle
I have a very sedentary lifestyle. I am a college student so I spend a lof of time writing. Even when I am not doing school work my hobbies are doing art, journaling, being on the computer, cooking, second-hand shopping- so things that are not active. My friend and I used to walk once a week but we have not done that in a while. Ever since I came back from my vacation in July I have not gone too the gym at all.
I should lean into physical activities I do like- I do like to go on walks and hike, it would be wonderful to get back into hiking.
I am going on a month long break from work which could give me time to be active again if I take it because if not it will be less active time (on my feet the small 15 hours a week I work).
5) challenges and obstacles-
Hardest time sticking to it- when I have a break in my normal routine, like my vacation, when I get high, when I am given free food, when I am stressed. Also when I am on my period.
Currently, I just got prediabetes and my cholesterol is just barely bad.
6 Monitoring-
7- Mindful eating and emotional relationship with food-
food and I have a difficult relationship- I am definitely addicted to it. I spend hours looking at pictures of food. I don't look at super fattening foods but always looking at food- healthy or not can't be good for you.
I do not practice mindful eating :/ I eat in front of the tv, the phone, I eat fast.
overly full with meals
CREATING MY GOAL AND PLAN FOR DECEMBER-
4 opportunities to eat out. I am just being honest I do not want to find the healthiest food there. I have never been to the clay oven or the patio so I want to try their food not their salad. but I can focus on portion control and getting a to go box first thing.
My doctor wants me to walk 30 minutes every day.. I might have to work up to that.
specific goal- Walk Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays to start with.
Water- drink a glass with each meal.
focus on adding not taking away.

What it means to be a vegan in Russia
It is believed that Russian northern cuisine is not adapted to vegetarianism. Nevertheless, veganism and vegetarianism are becoming more and more popular.
Social surveys show, the number of Russians who have given up eating meat is in the hundreds of thousands. The dynamics are increasing, especially for the most "strict" category - vegans. There are 1.5 times more of them every year.
For the Russian market, vegetarian and vegan products are no longer a rarity. Every year there is an increasing demand for vegetarian products in supermarkets, and new vegan establishments are opening. For example, in Moscow alone, a restaurant search engine gives 194 options, among which are both profile vegetarian establishments and places where the menu has a corresponding section.
But St. Petersburg can safely be called the vegan capital of Russia. It surpasses Moscow in the number of vegan places! At the same time, the city inspires with its example also the regions - Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod and even Muslim Kazan.
In addition to specialized stores, appropriate goods appear on the shelves of conventional supermarkets.
The menus of cafes and restaurants include not only salads, but also burgers with potato, soy, chickpea and other "non-meat" cutlets. Items and products are increasingly being labeled with the appropriate labels to make it easier for vegetarians and vegans to navigate the list of dishes.
And Russia also has its own mobile app which identifies vegan products by barcode, because, after all, even products marked "lean" are sometimes not suitable for vegans.

Where in Russia would you recommend going/ seeing?
hmmmmmmm well I’ve stayed in Moscow for the past 3 months and I haven’t seen any other parts of Russia yet, but Moscow is amazing and definitely worth seeing. As far as Moscow recommendations hmm....I suppose it depends what you enjoy doing, so far my favourite part of Moscow is the night life, and I recommend Mutabor/ мутабор above all! Even if you dont like techno that much it will change your mind. Also Ровесник/Rovesnik, Bar Kot Шрёдiнгера, Be Positive Bar, Mono, Imagine, and definitely Propaganda (it’s a cool techno place with smoke and I love a cool techno place with smoke, not as much of an experience as Mutabor but Propaganda is gay on sundays). Just walking around Kitai Gorod at night is great, there’s a really cool party buzz in the air! Like shit is HAPPENING here, Moscow is vibrant as hell. The food markets are dope, especially Vokrug Sveta (the Israeli street food stall there is so good). Danilovsky Market is beautiful, and Depo is huge and impressive. Going to the markets is way more of an experience than just getting food, it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re in Moscow!
The Jewish museum in Marina Roscha is incredible, super high budget and informative and interesting, so I definitely recommend that. The Tretyakov was fine, but I don’t know if it was my favourite cultural experience in Moscow. VDNKh is also pretty cool to have a wander around, and it’s free if you stay outside. I think the coolest thing is just going to the Red Square and seeing the Kremlin and St Basil’s cathedral, it’s so powerful and impressive. Also free if you stay outside. If you have the option to see the inside of the Lenin Library, that’s also super cool (but in order to get in I had to give them my passport, visa, registration, get my photo taken and a library ID card printed, go through turnstiles then a metal detector, hand in all my stuff at a coat check, get a form, sign it, date it, get it stamped, and keep it to show on the way out as well)
This anon has made me realise that I really haven’t done that much sight-seeing or been to many museums!! Every time the weekend rolls around I’m more interested in exploring the nightlife than going to a museum tbh (I know that doesn’t fit my studyblr aesthetic hahahaha) and I still haven’t committed to buying ballet tickets or anything (I really want to though). Next on my list is going to the Museum of Erotica to see Rasputin’s alleged penis.
OMG also there’s this crazy ULTRA hipster district in Dmitrovskaya called FLACON, it’s extremely hipster but I love it, they have great Russian designers there and quirky shops and like, half a bus coming out of a wall and people with dyed eyeballs. It’s definitely a more expensive place (as in Western Europe prices!!)Also if you’re vegan in Moscow, definitely check out the restaurant Avocado off Tverskaya, and the cafe Циники/Tsiniki, I think they have the best vegan pastries and avocado toast that I’ve ever had. Being vegan is so so easy in Moscow, I’ve been SHOOK the whole time.
One of my friends went to Kazan recently and he said it was fantastic, so maybe Kazan is worth going to. And definitely Saint Petersburg, I can’t wait to go there. I think I’m gonna get a tattoo there. Man this ended up being a long response. It was fun! Thanks for the q!

During Phoenix Vegan Restaurant Week last month, we went to Goji Berry Cafe in the Downtown Phoenix Arts District to try their limited time three-course Cajun seafood special. This included a San Francisco-style vegan clam chowder in a bread bowl, a Cajun seafood boil with vegan shrimp, vegan, scallops, potatoes, corn, and vegan sausage, and a large brownie sundae for dessert. We added a Caesar salad and a virgin Moscow Mule to round out this massive meal which we shared. Everything was spectacular and we really wish that this meal would become a regular menu offering! 😋🌱 #PhoenixVeganRestaurantWeek (at Goji Berry Cafe) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjMALy4vSQC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Food trends in Moscow in 2021
Moscow is rarely called the gastro-capital, usually this title goes to New York, Paris, and, of course, Berlin.
And that is a shame. Because Moscow has recently been experiencing a real boom in food trends, perfectly absorbing global trends and adapting them to the way of life in this city!
The power of the author's vision and rethinking of simple things like hot dogs, new tastes and ingredients and also yummy-cute PP-desserts, hooligan bars in the most unexpected places – that what characterized Moscow on 2021 food scene.
So what did Muscovites eat and where did they go in 2021?
1. Author's cuisine.
Food-spots - from corners to restaurants which are really led by just one chef - the creator, and it is his vision that is embodied in the menu. For example, hot dogs are rethought in a new way. It's no longer the American "bun plus sausage": try a hot dog with Kamchatka crab, avocado and smoked tomato on a chestnut brioche, or a hot dog with truffle and currant.
2. Wine Bars
The boom in wine bars is, as they say, for a reason. There is a longing to get out of the familiar four walls and a thirst for new flavors. That is why the more labels a newly-built wine point on the map of Moscow has, the better.
The wine list now includes biodynamic and organic wines and cocktails with low alcohol content.
3. Delivery of healthy food
What did Muscovites usually order in delivery just a year or two ago?
The usual set looked like this: pizza, rolls, sometimes khinkali and shawarma. Or McDonald's.
But today that picture is changing radically. Something really interesting and healthy is on trend. Quinoa, smoothies, and other incomprehensible words have become native to Muscovites.
Sets are particularly popular: a ready-made set of meals for 1 to 3 to 5 days. As well as sets for different eating programmes - the ration is designed for up to 30 days. Not to mention the fact that meals can be selected by caloric content.
And yes, delivery is most often free.
Quotes from typical healthy-food menu: Oatmeal with coconut milk, amaranth, blackberries and pears, Lingonberry morsel with rosemary, Baked pumpkin salad with tangerines and orange-cunjumbo sauce, Turkey with baked yams, oyster mushrooms and spinach, Dorado Escalivado with canihua and stewed vegetables.
4. Sugar-free/lactose-free/gluten-free
Italians with their love of floury foods would catch a fit right now.
Wheat flourless cakes, low calorie cakes, vegan tarts, delicate brownies on homemade chocolate, crispy chocolate sabre with homemade vegan salted caramel - such healthy desserts are increasingly on the menu.
And somehow it's even embarrassing to order yourself something normal after that.
5. New-wave Ryumochnaya – "cheap and cheerful"
More and more new wave ryumochnaya (ryumka = a shot) are opening in Moscow, where homemade liqueurs flow as a river, and snacks are scattered on the table for ridiculous money by Moscow standards. The bet here is not on the expensive interior or artful food but on the right vibe.
I'd like to single out the names of such places:
"Pistils and Sticks"
"Dream Fudge Room"
"Science and Life"
"Alcoholic Beverage Bar"
"Vodka Room "Liberty"
"Wide on wide"

What to do in Paris’ Pigalle Neighborhood
Not long ago, Pigalle, Paris’ former red-light district had a naughty reputation. Fast forward to 2021, this lively area located at the base of Montmartre has reinvented itself as one of the city’s trendiest quartiers.
Pigalle’s once grimy bars have transformed into hipster establishments accompanied by a wide array of artesian coffee shops, tasty restaurants, and stylish shops. To make it easier to find the best spots in the neighborhood, I’ve compiled a brief guide to this re-vamped quartier in the city of lights:
Pigalle Classics
To start your day off, head along Pigalle’s main boulevard and you’ll find one of Paris’ most underrated museums: The Phono Museum. This 140 year old music lovers haven is jam packed with old timey music boxes, antique gramophones and rare vinyl. Be sure to check out the vintage record shop located at the back of the museum to take home a musical memento
When night falls, it’s worth a trip to Pigalle to check out the famous Le Moulin Rouge cabaret. However, the real must-do comes after the glitter smothered show in a tucked away bar nestled behind the Moulin Rouge’s turbines. Le Bar à Bulls is the perfect spot to debrief after the spectacle on the Japanese styled terrace overlooking the busy boulevard.
The Phono Museum : 10 rue Lallier, 75009
Le Moulin Rouge: 82 Boulevard de Clichy, 75018
Le Bar à Bulls: 4Bis Cité Véron, 75018 Paris
Where to eat in Pigalle
Whatever food you’re craving, Pigalle will have you covered. For a classic French fix, check out Le Bon Bock and be taken back in time to the 19th century. Said to be one of the oldest restaurants in the area, Le Bon Bock serves delicious traditional French cuisine in a cozy wooden eatery.
For non-meat eaters, Pigalle has one of the best vegan restaurants in Paris. Check out brEATHE for incroyable plant based sweet treats and vegetarian dishes that are not only tasty but delightfully instagramable.
Craving something slightly less healthy but still delicious? Head to Dumbo on rue Jean-Baptiste Pigalle for one of the best smash style burgers around. And for those who can’t decide what it is they feel like munching, simply stroll down rue des Martyrs: an iconic Parisienne street stuffed with cafes, fromageries, boulangeries, restaurants, delicatessens, and almost anything your hungry brain can think of.
Le Bon Bock – 2 Rue Dancourt, 75018
brEATHE – 16 Rue Henry Monnier, 75009
Dumbo – 64 rue Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, 75009
Where to drink in Pigalle
If you’re more down for some apéro and cocktails, there is plenty of choice in Pigalle.
For penny pinchers, head to rue Frochot and check out Lipstick or B9. Both have great happy hour deals, decent cocktails, and a lively atmosphere. If you’re after proper craftmanship, walk a few minutes further and you’ll find Le Mondain. The bar’s friendly owner Jerome is a class A mixologist who serves up some of the tastiest cocktails I have tried in Paris.
After something in between a bar and a restaurant? Lao is your place. Pop in for some sensational tapas paired with Asian fusion cocktails. I recommend giving the ‘Lao Mule’ a try – an Asian twist on the famous Moscow Mule!
B9, Lipstick – rue Frochot, 75009
Le Mondain – 46 rue Jean-Baptiste Pigalle
Lao – 7 Rue Douai, 75009
Where to go for a night out
Pigalle’s naughty trait mostly alludes to its fantastic nightlife scene these days. One spot you shouldn’t miss – especially if you’re a fan of live music – is Le Bus Palladium. First opened in 1965, Le Bus Palladium has been visited by dozens of celebrities over the years, including the Beatles.
Next, head off down the street towards the Moulin Rouge and you’ll stumble across another legendary Paris club that’s been around since 1875 – Le Carmen. Party in its historic haussmannian style club that’s filled with mirrors at every spin.
Le Bus Palladium – 6 rue Pierre Fontaine, 75009
Le Carmen – 34 rue Duperré, 75009
Where to stay in Pigalle
Right in the middle of all the Pigalle madness you’ll find the iconic Grand Pigalle Hotel, which is also home to one of Michelin-starred chef Gregory Marchand’s restaurants Frenchie Pigalle. This boutique and swanky hotel will keep you amid it all while feeling on cloud nine.
Also on the main boulevard you will find the luxurious five hotel: Maison Souquet. In true Pigalle style, the former brothel is now a stunning boutique 20 room hotel, decorated with period paintings and antiques, all subtlety hinting back at its playful past.
For those looking for plush Paris apartments to truly settle in and feel like a Parisian, be sure to check out Plum Guide for chic and cozy vacation rentals to make yourself at home in the area.
Grand Pigalle Hotel / Frenchie – 29 rue Victor Massé, 75009
Maison Souquet – 10 Rue de Bruxelles, 75009
Check out Plum Guide
In summary…
There’s no doubt about it – Pigalle will show you a good time – whether you’re after a stroll through vibrant and picturesque streets, a party, or a fantastic journey into a trendy quartier of Paris. For those who want to enjoy a lively, fun, and hip side to Paris – make sure Pigalle is top on your list to discover.

How did you get started on becoming vegan? I wanna make that decision for myself, but I’m finding it difficult from a financial stand point as well as a social one. I live in Moscow, and to say to my family that I want to become vegan not just for my eating habits but also to implement it into my entire lifestyle, would be a mockery as my dad once said.
Hello! Congratulations on wanting to become vegan!
Let’s start by getting rid of one of your concerns: being vegan isn’t expensive, quite the contrary. If we focus on food, a vegan diet is usually composed of (very) cheap ingredients (fruits and veggies, pasta and rice, legumes, etc.). Vegan substitutes can be expensive depending on where you buy them, but you don’t necessarily need them on a regular basis (or even at all). There are areas in which vegan products can cost a bit more than non-vegan ones—I especially think of cruelty-free hygiene products, but again, it depends on where you live and where you buy them (and you can even make them yourself!). From my experience, a vegan lifestyle will rather help you save money.
Since you asked, here’s how I became vegan: I went vegan overnight and continued buying and eating any plant-based food I was used to while slowly adding things I didn’t often eat (most veggies and legumes actually…). I cooked what I knew, bought ready-prepared dishes I could afford, and progressively learned new vegan recipes. It took my body around a week to completely adapt to my new diet. I also got rid of some non-vegan items I had while keeping others. I progressively replaced most of my non-vegan cleaning products and hygiene products with vegan ones (that I either bought or made).
There’s more than one method to become vegan---and mine probably wasn’t the most conventional one. Depending on your current lifestyle, it will take more or less time. I really encourage you to read this excellent guide written by @acti-veg. You can also read this one on The Vegan Society website.
Regarding the social part, if you’re talking about eating out with non-vegans, it’s important to be firm about your decision to eat in a restaurant that has vegan options (or is completely vegan), and I’m sure they should exist in Moscow.
Of course, there will be people around you who will be understanding of your diet, and others who won’t. If you don’t live in a vegan-friendly environment, you will probably face some difficulties because of people who will try to convince you that veganism isn’t worth it. You’re not obligated to deal with them, but it can be difficult to avoid them if they’re part of your family and friends. I can only advise you to stay educated on veganism to be able to expose your point of view. In fact, being knowledgeable on veganism is important in any case.
Last but not least, avoid staying alone. Try connecting with vegans in your area as well as online (my inbox is always open ;)). It’ll help you stay motivated and deal with issues you might encounter.
I hope my answer will help you with your vegan journey! Don’t hesitate to ask me for more details if you need to.
