SALVADOR (1986) Grade: B-
Its a good story, little long, preachy, but shot well. It was Oliver Stone behind the camera. Story still moves a good pace. The ending is pretty heartbreaking even though the film had plenty of levity.

Multicultural Children's Book Day Part 2
This year, I was also gifted The Jake Show by Joshua Levy! The book was published by Katherine Tegen Books, an imprint of Harper Collins Publishing (harpercollins.com). Joshua is Jewish Florida native who has written several middle grade books. Jake is a TV-loving kid who is being pulled between two different worlds: The devout "yiddishkeit" of living with his mother and the secular, STEM encouraging of living with his father. Shuffled from school to school and between these two worlds, Jake has mastered the art of masking, but with the guidance of some excellent friends (and a few close-calls along the way), learns that he can't be both the person his mom wants him to be and the person his dad wants him to be at the same time (let alone himself). I really connected with Jake and the need to perform differently for different groups of people. I also remembered the feeling of starting in a new school and feeling like it would only be temporary. While adjusting to the Jewish vocabulary in the beginning was a little difficult for me (Jake did a great job at providing subtitles for things a few chapters in), this book was a great read! Jake's story will resonate with readers trying to parse out who they are/who they want to be. I'm so excited to add this book to the shelves in my library! Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2024 (1/25/24) is in its 11th year! Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen founded this non-profit children’s literacy initiative; they are two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural diverse books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.
Read Your World’s mission is to raise awareness of the need to include kids’ books celebrating diversity in homes and school bookshelves. Read about our Mission and history HERE.

Friedberg and Seltzer at the Movies Part 5: Disaster Movie (2008)
In today's review, I do more than just flirt with disaster, as I attempt a #positive review of the 2008 disaster movie parody, Disaster Movie #MattLanter #VanessaLachey #CristaFlanagan #NicoleParker #KimKardashian #IkeBarinholtz #CarmenElectra #TonyCox
Recent events might have brought home how precarious our place is, civilization could be wiped out by a cold, or a meteorite, or even a hitherto unfulfilled prophecy. And as I noted before, this has been the topic of media obsession for some time. When faced with our obliteration, as other media products have graphically shown, all you can do is laugh. In 2008, the partnership of Friedberg and…

Randoms –
Ten facts about your muse: ⚫ Certo suffers an extreme case of arachnophobia. Like, immediate trigger of flight or fight response that he actually responds with flight first unless his escape route is blocked. He'll shut down, hyperventilate, sometimes even cry. It's awful. ⚫ He's also terrified of deep water. Like the ocean. Or some lakes. He refuses to travel by ocean faring vessels. Deep rivers don't tend to bother him so much, but this leads into the next... ⚫ Certo hates baths. He loves showering and feeling clean, but he cannot stand the idea of bathing in a tub that his dirty body is sitting in. Showers only for this elf. He can handle a dip in a bath house like setting because bodies are cleaned first, then enter the water. Even then, not for long. ⚫ Certo plays the harmonica. It's a less known fact about him, though not something he necessarily hides. He plays more frequently when he's alone, as it helps him get through tough thoughts or feelings. ⚫ He is a recovered somnus addict, though it will always be a struggle. He's almost fallen back into it's clutches a couple of times, but with the strong support of loved ones he's managed to stay clean so far. ⚫ Certo dries his own herbs, and uses them frequently for cooking, or medicinal and metaphysical purposes. This also includes drying his own fogweed and moko, and rolling his own blends of cigarettes. ⚫ Certo’s face paint is almost a religious practice. It's an entire ritual that goes into it, and it's made fresh each time he applies it. His ingredients sometimes will change, as will the patterns on his face, depending on how he’s feeling and what's happening in to him at that particular moment. ⚫ He reveres the Elementals with much more devotion than he does the Twevle. To him, the gods are gone and have abandoned the world, but the Elementals are alive and are an incredible presence. ⚫ Certo only kills what is necessary, and will use the entirety of the carcass. The hide will be tanned for leather that he will wear, or trade. Horns, teeth, bones, and hooves will be used for rituals, trade, boiled for soup, or ground into powder. Every bit of meat will be cooked, cured, or smoked. Nothing goes to waste. ⚫ At one point of his life, Certo forgot how to speak. He had been alone in the deep woods for so long, and his only company was a strange wildman who couldn't speak at all. Certo communicated with this man in body language, grunts, growls, and other sort of feral noises. It's a habit he falls back into easily, especially if he's flustered.
Five Things -

Fishing
Fighting

He takes care of his responsibilities. His pets, his lovers, his friends. Sometimes his work.
He exercises often.
Communicates openly with his partners. Even about the small stuff.
He has a pretty good routine, and sticks to it easily.
Bad Habits:
He smokes, a lot.
He swears even more.
He internalises problems and fears when he should talk more.
He chews at his lips, especially if they're dry, and mostly without actually thinking about it.
Acting (or reacting) first, and thinking later.

Multicultural Children's Book Day 2024 Part 1
I was gifted Mightier Than the Sword: Rebels, Reformers & Revolutionaries Who Changed the World Through Writing by Rochelle Melander. The books is published by beaming books (beamingbooks.com) and includes illustrations by Melina Ontiveros. Melander is a public speaker and author working to encourage young people to change their lives and communities through writing. Her non-fiction book, Mightier Than the Sword does an excellent job at capturing the importance of writing across all different fields. She introduces important figures throughout history from a variety of different backgrounds and demographics with short biographies and how they used writing to improve their lives and/or the lives of those around them. I loved the inclusion of different writing prompts and believe this book will make a fantastic addition to my library shelves. Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2024 (1/25/24) is in its 11th year!
