A central element of the myth of [Eleanor of Aquitaine] is that of her exceptionalism. Historians and Eleanor biographers have tended to take literally Richard of Devizes’s conventional panegyric of her as ‘an incomparable woman’. She is assumed to be a woman out of her time. […] Amazement at Eleanor’s power and independence is born from a presentism that assumes generally that the Middle Ages were a backward age, and specifically that medieval women were all downtrodden and marginalized. Eleanor’s career can, from such a perspective, only be explained by assuming that she was an exception who rose by sheer force of personality above the restrictions placed upon twelfth-century women.
— Michael R. Evans, Inventing Eleanor: The Medieval and Post-Medieval Image of Eleanor of Aquitaine
"...The idea of Eleanor’s exceptionalism rests on an assumption that women of her age were powerless. On the contrary, in Western Europe before the twelfth century there were ‘no really effective barriers to the capacity of women to exercise power; they appear as military leaders, judges, castellans, controllers of property’. […] In an important article published in 1992, Jane Martindale sought to locate Eleanor in context, stripping away much of the conjecture that had grown up around her, and returning to primary sources, including her charters. Martindale also demonstrated how Eleanor was not out of the ordinary for a twelfth-century queen either in the extent of her power or in the criticisms levelled against her.
If we look at Eleanor’s predecessors as Anglo-Norman queens of England, we find many examples of women wielding political power. Matilda of Flanders (wife of William the Conqueror) acted as regent in Normandy during his frequent absences in England following the Conquest, and [the first wife of Henry I, Matilda of Scotland, played some role in governing England during her husband's absences], while during the civil war of Stephen’s reign Matilda of Boulogne led the fight for a time on behalf of her royal husband, who had been captured by the forces of the empress. And if we wish to seek a rebel woman, we need look no further than Juliana, illegitimate daughter of Henry I, who attempted to assassinate him with a crossbow, or Adèle of Champagne, the third wife of Louis VII, who ‘[a]t the moment when Henry II held Eleanor of Aquitaine in jail for her revolt … led a revolt with her brothers against her son, Philip II'.
Eleanor is, therefore, less the exception than the rule – albeit an extreme example of that rule. This can be illustrated by comparing her with a twelfth century woman who has attracted less literary and historical attention. Adela of Blois died in 1137, the year of Eleanor’s marriage to Louis VII. […] The chronicle and charter evidence reveals Adela to have ‘legitimately exercised the powers of comital lordship’ in the domains of Blois-Champagne, both in consort with her husband and alone during his absence on crusade and after his death. […] There was, however, nothing atypical about the nature of Adela’s power. In the words of her biographer Kimberley LoPrete, ‘while the extent of Adela’s powers and the political impact of her actions were exceptional for a woman of her day (and indeed for most men), the sources of her powers and the activities she engaged in were not fundamentally different from those of other women of lordly rank’. These words could equally apply to Eleanor; the extent of her power, as heiress to the richest lordship in France, wife of two kings and mother of two or three more, was remarkable, but the nature of her power was not exceptional. Other noble or royal women governed, arranged marriages and alliances, and were patrons of the church. Eleanor represents one end of a continuum, not an isolated outlier."
#It had to be said!#eleanor of aquitaine#historicwomendaily#angevins#my post#12th century#gender tag#adela of blois#I think Eleanor's prominent role as dowager queen during her sons' reigns may have contributed to her image of exceptionalism#Especially since she ended up overshadowing both her sons' wives (Berengaria of Navarre and Isabella of Angouleme)#But once again if we examine Eleanor in the context of her predecessors and contemporaries there was nothing exceptional about her role#Anglo-Saxon consorts before the Norman Conquest (Eadgifu; Aelfthryth; Emma of Normandy) were very prominent during their sons' reigns#Post-Norman queens were initially never kings' mothers because of the circumstances (Matilda of Flanders; Edith-Matilda; and#Matilda of Boulogne all predeceased their husbands; Adeliza of Louvain never had any royal children)#But Eleanor's mother-in-law Empress Matilda was very powerful and acted as regent of Normandy during Henry I's reign#Which was a particularly important precedent because Matilda's son - like Eleanor's sons after him - was an *adult* when he became King.#and in France Louis VII's mother Adelaide of Maurienne was certainly very powerful and prominent during Eleanor's own queenship#Eleanor's daughter Joan's mother-in-law Margaret of Navarre had also been a very powerful regent of Sicily#(etc etc)#So yeah - in itself I don't think Eleanor's central role during her own sons' reigns is particularly surprising or 'exceptional'#Its impact may have been but her role in itself was more or less the norm

so we all know life is a circle. thus fandom is a circle. we see things come back around like the de/twinkification of racetrack higgins. or cowboy versus artist jack kelly. or "mom" friend david jacobs and the perpetual need to make the newsies some kind of heteronormative family. and yet again we've found our way back to the anti katherine pulitzer arc of her "getting in the way" of jack and davey's popular subtextual/fanon relationship. (yes im late nevermind that.)
now, not being a katherine fan is different than being anti-katherine. not being a katherine fan means you might have criticisms like "i'm not sure how she serves the newsies narrative better than, say, sarah jacobs, as sarah is more aligned with the newsies contextually/societally and katherine is very distant and rich lol", or even "i'm not a big fan of how katherine seems to be tired of jack's shit for most of the play and then 'suddenly' finds romantic interest in him within one song".
but being anti-singular-young-woman-character because of a ship between the main two boys is. a tired take is it not? again with the circle, we've had this discourse already and its been cut out. since 2012 and 2017 we been talking about this girl and her value, but not in the context we should be.
(because the context we should be talking about it in is a newsies 1992 versus newsies broadway context, not an anti-katherine context, but i digress.)
katherine's value. what is there to mine from? she is an extremely young woman reporter, 17-18 years old, whose article makes the front page of the new york sun. since she writes under a pseudonym, i'm presuming she writes with skill well above her age to be published at all (yes, even writing vaudeville reviews). in past productions she either finds the newsies at jacobi's because she saw the walk-out (TWWK) from inside The World (UK), or jack kelly simply interests her enough for her to seek him out again (Broadway/Tour/Live). she is unsure about herself as a writer despite her skill which is made clear in her song. she is rich. she did not need to have a career and was encouraged not to. pulitzer is her father and she does not get along with him. she matches jack word for word, often with davey at her side. she mills comfortably about the newsies through the second act and has a friendship of some kind with specs specifically. she also literally says "that's a face [jack's] that could save us all from sinking in the ocean/like someone said 'power tends to corrupt'" essentially prophesying the act 2 betrayal. which is crazy.
you can draw your own conclusions from the above, but all of it is essentially canon? right? so maybe you don't have to be a fan of all of it, but you're really going to tell me absolutely none of this is compelling. that none of this is something you can interpret for yourself as complex. that albert is more complex.
this is not me saying you have to include katherine in everything, because that isn't what this post is about. this is about individuals choosing to dislike or devalue katherine by only viewing her in relation to her as a romantic interest, instead of a complex character in a period piece with a full arc. yes a full arc. it's the musical that's rushed not katherine.
@we-are-inevitable speaks on this extremely well in the comments of this post as well, more in connection to katherine as being a compelling romantic interest in the context of newsies speaking in the defense of love interests/often women characters. in this post i speak on how i would navigate jack/katherine as a director, and in this post i speak on how to direct something to believe in to make it, well, believable, aside from its awful writing for both kath and jack. because again, fandom is a circle, and i literally talked about how to "fix" jatherine in august 2024. at length
#literally scheduling this 8hrs from now cause my visibility is good at like 11am-12pm lmao?????#anyway i wanted to talk ab this for a bit but the reason i didnt till a few days later is bc like.#i just feel like i HAVE already#MULTIPLE times. in 2023 too for uksies katherine bc i rly wanted a jath push for a black jack kelly#AND i feel like i talked abt this adjacently with girlsie spot conlon as well. since its quite pointed that she's a rare find round here.#katherine plumber#katherine pulitzer#as for the pseudonym- yes her dad knows she writes but idt the sun knows its her bc they'd be like to pulitzer:#'just have her write in the world'. yk. why would they let joe pulitzer's kid on their pages. they DONT KNOW ITS HER#newsies#newsies the musical#newsies broadway#livesies#newsies live#newsies uk#uksies#jack kelly#davey jacobs#mutuals#jac ily for ur comments on ur post they are truly so clear-worded and like. logical.#fizz freaks#fizz writes#maybe#rizz.analysis#<- best tag on the blog btw.

David Nellist
Physique: Average Build Height: 5’5″ (165cm)
David Nellist is an English actor. He has worked in film television and theatre for over that 20 years, appearing in Sherlock (2010), 55 Degrees North (2004) and The Gambling Man (1995).
A very cute and cuddly daddy, I personally would waste no time getting him into bed. Like most of the world, I discovered David in the 2024 film Sebastian where his character gets serviced by a writer/sex worker, stripping down to get banged in bed from behind and in missionary. Hopefully, he could parlay that into more screen time in demand worldwide (and not just in demand in my bedroom!).
Born in the small town of Wallsend in Northeast England, Dave trained at Rose Bruford College just outside of London before kicking off his acting career on both stage and screen. His first television appearance came in 1992 in an episode of the series Spender and he’d go on to racking up over a dozen more TV credits before making his big screen debut in the 2011 crime drama Sket.
I know very little of his personal life. Looks like he's married with a child, SO… he is most likely straight, but he works in the theatre so I can live in hope.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Sebastian (2024) A Confession (TV Mini Series 2019) Sherlock (TV Series 2010–2016) 55 Degrees North (TV Series 2004–2005) The Gambling Man (1995)

No one asked for this, but I really needed to infodump about him to someone or I was gonna go insane.
˙⋆✮ Info about my CoD oc, 'Dawn'! ✮⋆˙
⚠️Warning!⚠️ There will be a lot of words and one image containing (mild) nudity below the cut. (A shirtless man, in case you are uncomfortable with such)
The first image is a reference for the finer details of his character such as his hairstyle, his facial details like his nose and eyes, and his major scars.
The second image is more of how I envisioned his body type, but I struggle with consistency and being able to convey some bodies in different angles and intricate poses.
——————————————————————————
These are just some drawings I've made of his character as I was developing him.
While he is a rather calm individual, being stoic and silent most of the time, he does still get rather angry on the inside. Which is what I was trying to convey in the first image.
He respects his peers and superiors, but when they do legitimately stupid shit, he can and will rock their shit depending on how bad it was.
I've included this in his lore before but I am too nervous to share some of the finer details of his lore and will only be vaguely referencing it, sorry ☹️🫶
——————————————————————————
I made a janky, very brief timeline of his career above.
Now, I haven't filed through complete details so some things such as his rank and experience in the field may or may not be entirely accurate with the time he was working especially since I made his character on the fly and did little to no research at first. Only now am I actually trying to expand his character and lore and am realizing I did not do nearly enough research. Most of this is just what I thought sounded nice at first.
——————————————————————————
More in-detail information below ↓
Name: Julius Harper Aliases: Dawn, 7-28
Nationality: Filipino Ethnicity: Eastern Asian
Age: 32 DoB: June 19, 1992
Pronouns: He/Him Gender: Cis Man Sex: M
Sexuality: Unlabeled, prefers men
Height: 6'2
Languages: Tagalog, English, FSL (Filipino sign language, for Dusk)
Which CoD universe: Modern Warfare (ii)
Branches of Service: Marine Corps
Affiliation: Shadow Company
Specialities: hand to hand, a variety of front line infantry skills, long range, basic first aid
Personality: usually grumpy and quiet. switches between sassy, rude, and teasing(towards close people) and quiet, obedient, and stoic. He's technically a strong and silent type around most people, usually very distrusting and distant. He's very good at following orders unless they're outright stupid, then he'll put up a fight about them.
Backstory: (my attempt at being brief, sorry🙏) given to an (underground) training organization with unconventional training methods at a young age, was tortured and ridiculed for disobeying (his scars on his face and chest🫶), escaped with force when he was 17(nearly 18). Had to travel by himself to the US and rely on strangers to get him there (no money to his name).
Eventually joined the Marines at 20, met Dusk (his Colonel). Blah blah blah, went up the ranks. At 28 he dragged Dusk out of the field half exploded and left the Marines soon after Dusk did. Joined Shadow Company 🫶
Issues: PTSD, nightmares, paranoia, nervous at being touched randomly
Habits: never takes off his mask unless he's REALLY comfortable, sleeps with it on more often than not. Hovers close to people he likes cause he doesn't like to reach out and touch people, settling on subtle hands on shoulders or light brushes of skin. Watches and evaluates anyone and everyone in the same room as him, constantly searching for any red flags or threats.
Scars: One over each eye (resembling clown markings)
One running over his bottom lip and down his chin.
One running from his collar bone to below his navel.
A mix of bullet, knife, and other scars from his field work scattered over his arms and hands.
Preferred method of showing care/affection/love language: acts of service, quality time, ("secretly") physical touch.
Preferred way of receiving care/affection: words of affirmation, physical touch
Eye Color: left eye pale yellow with brown center, right eye green with yellow center. has heterochromia
Hair description: short and dusty brown with two streaks of early greying. Two long pieces in front of either ear, short in the back.
Clothing description: SC Uniform - beige tactical vest stocked with red and yellow(ish) Chem lights, roll of thin rope, and three mags. Black, long-sleeve zip-neck shirt with the shadow company insignia on the sleeve. Black balaclava, black helmet and goggles with attachable headphones connected to comms. Black tactical cargo pants, black belt with two storage pouches attached at either side of his hips, and a right handed gun holster. Very dark brown/black combat boots.
Not in uniform - form fitting short-sleeve shirts and jeans most of the time. Occasionally switching it up for loose shirts when his compression shirts feel too tight and strangling for a casual day. He wears belts to at least make it seem like he cares about his outfits, even though he doesn't really put effort. Picking up whatever dark colored shirts and jeans he can find and calling it a day most of the time.
Body description: well-built Filipino man with hooded eyes. He has a bit of stubble along his jaw, forgetting to shave often. Freckles are speckled over his face, arms, neck and shoulders, and legs. Body hair over his chest, arms, and legs mainly. Occasionally lets other Shadows paint his nails when they ask (requests black but can't say no if they choose another) so sometimes has painted nails.
Favorite activities: sitting outside with nature, playing guitar, going to the bar with Dusk to spend time and catch up, reteaching Dusk guitar
Blood type: O-
Favorite animal(s): Cats, snakes, birds in general
Favorite food/dessert: Pork Adobo, Graves' cooking (it's his guilty pleasure at cookouts, you can't convince me that Graves doesn't stand at a grill making food for his Shadows for a cookout on an off day)
• born in Marawi City; Mindanao, Philippines
——————————————————————————
He's generally like a big dog that doesn't realize it's own size, like a great Dane of sorts. Protective, loyal to a fault with aggressive tendencies towards those he doesn't know/trust. Silent and strong, unless he's with someone close to him
He enjoys his quiet time and regular meets up with an old friend of his, back from his Marine days, the both of them learning electric guitar and playing together sometimes to loosen up.
He's a workaholic all in all, not having many hobbies or activities out side of his work.
He lives at base, having been out on the streets before starting his career in the military.
——————————————————————————
He earned his scars on his face and chest when he was about 16-17, fleeing his state as soon as he was nearing 18 (lore reasons that I'm too nervous to share with people) and living on the streets with a lengthy theft history until he joined the Marines at 20 years old. Where he met his previously mentioned 'old friend', his Colonel, call sign 'Dusk'.
His shadow company number is 7-28. No I did not do research on the actual numbers, I just chose random ones that sounded nice on my tongue. Plus 28 is like,,, my number, if you couldn't tell by my user.
If anyone understands the number system better and would like to help me out by correcting me, I would appreciate that very much. But for now, it is Shadow 7-28.
His lore and titles were developed before I put him in Shadow Company canonically, so shit like him being a Lieutenant and other things that would require him to have years and years of experience to get would be from his career in the Marines before then. I'm assuming he would have to start fresh since he joined a new company? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believeeee he'd have to start fresh with SC with things like titles.
He does still keep his old mask since Dusk helped him with it, but now he really only wears the shadow company uniform and gear. Swapping his plain black balaclava for his old one with the skull-like details when he's back at base relaxing.
Smaller details about him!! ↓
Favorite color - Green !!
Favorite activities - sitting outside with nature, playing guitar, going to the bar with his found-family Brother (Dusk) to spend time and catch up
Favorite animal - cats ! Specifically black cats (he feels they're misunderstood)
• HATES ships and deep water
• used to (attempt to) pick up stray cats he found on the streets and try to bring them home as a kid.
• doesn't like training new recruits but is always put in charge of training them because of his leadership skills. (This happened to me in band a long while back, apparently my teacher thought I was a 'silent leader' and was really good at leading others subconsciously even if I hated being a leader??? That's him, that's Dawn. Silent leader)
• has nightmares frequently
• will deny liking someone, going as far as saying he hates them even if as soon as they leave the room he smiles on the inside because, hey! Someone wants to be close to him! That's new!
• tried drawing once, it looked like a kids drawing. he never picked up a pencil to draw again
• has really nice handwriting?? Wtf???
• He's a lieutenant!!
• spent years training to be a sniper that he's now unnecessarily still and silent while working on smaller tasks that require even the slightest bit of focus such as paperwork.
——————————————————————————
Info about 'Dusk' since he's a big part of their lore ↓
These are all the drawings I've done of him so far ↑
While I haven't gone deep into lore for him, I do have a few small facts about him that have played a part in Dawn's lore.
——————————————————————————
• He is 6'3, standing only an inch taller than Dawn.
• he was Dawn's Colonel for most of their career before they joined Shadow Company.
• just before Dawn had left to join SC, Dusk had gotten caught too close to an explosion. Having been dragged back to the base by Dawn himself and after healing, was left with very little sight and hearing on his left side. He struggled to be able to do many tasks that he needed to be able to complete to keep his job afterwards and had to quit.
• he cut off his long hair after the explosion burned off a lot of his hair, being left with very little long hair left on his right side. He felt it looked odd and cut it off so it could regrow at its own pace. Some parts of his scalp on his left side having damaged the actual skin there making it very hard/impossible to regrow it in some patches.
• he started learning guitar before joining the military, having been the one who inspired Dawn to learn and having lent Dawn their first ever guitar.
• was the one who gave Dawn his callsign
• he's Filipino, one of the many traits he and Dawn bonded over
• acts as Dawn's older brother later on in their career together after years of knowing each other. He has two siblings at home while Dawn is an only child
——————————————————————————
Fun fact! He was slightly based off of my older brother, named Dusk :)
While some parts of his character were based off of him, the name was surprisingly not, it just happened to match up with Dawn while I was making them 🫶
——————————————————————————
If you couldn't tell, Dawn is my baby and my favorite OC. I love him very much and will probably expand on his lore and such at some point, but for now, this is what we have.
Thank you if you read all of this ❤️

・❥・I an 21 years old, born in September 21st of 1992 (shifting to 2013).
・❥・I am an actress and model. My love for acting started in 2006, at 14, when my older brother asked me to be part of a school play he was directing.
My Career
・❥・I started staring in more plays and in 2008, at 16, I got recognized by the director of "the chronicles of Narnia: The lion, the witch and the wardrobe" where I played as Susan (I changed the timeliness a bit: first movie was released in 2009, second in 2010 and third in 2011).
・❥・ Those projects gave me more visibility in the industry and I became more well known.
・❥・After that I took a huge break in acting but I was active in modeling for big fashion companies such as Dior and Victoria Secret.
・❥・In 2012 I auditioned for Tauriel in the Hobbit franchise and got the part.
・❥・While filming for it in 2012-2013, I met Aidan Turner (my s/o).

・❥・My s/o is Aidan Turner, we met in 2012, while filming for the second Hobbit movie. He helped me with my anxiety in the audition and we got to talking and one thing lead to another and now we're together.
・❥・I love the forests, the mountains, the rain, the wind and cloudy days so much (I have scripted that the weather is always moody, dark and cold unless it's summer 🤭)

A Fun (David Tennant) Fact of the Day!
...brought to you by A Tennantcy To Act! Did you know two of the people in this screenshot from the first episode of 1994's Takin' Over The Asylum had worked with David before the filming of the series?
Yup!
Matthew Costello - who played Alastair - also graduated from the RSAMD. He had already worked with David twice before Takin' Over The Asylum!
Costello was in two of the four productions David did in 1992 with the 7:84 Scottish People's Theatre: on the left, he's pictured in a publicity still for Jump The Life To Come, (he's at the bottom of the globe), and on the right, with David (he's in the middle) in a scene from Scotland Matters!
The second noted person in the screenshot from Takin' Over The Asylum is Molly Innes.
Innes - who played Margaret - also graduated from the RSAMD! She played alongside David in the Dundee Rep's 1992 production of Tartuffe, where she played the role of Dorine.
She's pictured here next to David in a scene from the play.
Aaaaaaaaand now you know! You like learning new things about David's work and career, right? Well then - go and subscribe to A Tennantcy To Act (it's free!) at:
Hope you enjoyed!

Jack McGee
Physique: Husky Build Height: 5'5" (1.65 m)
John J. McGee (born February 2, 1949) is an American television and film character actor who has appeared in over 100 films and television series. He is best known as Chief Jerry Reilly on the television series Rescue Me. In 2010, he co-starred as Hickey on the Spike TV comedy series Players. He is also known for The Fighter, Gangster Squad, Basic Instinct and Moneyball.
Built like a fireplug with his classic working stiff features and gravelly raspy voice has landed McGee countless roles, usually playing gruff, blue-collar guys characters. All in all, he basically looked like a young Charles Durning, another hot chubby daddy I admired. Over the years he has been at the centre of so many of my dirty little fantasies.
Born in the South Bronx, New York, McGee attended Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, where he was class president and also played on the Football team, and appeared as a member of the background harmony in The Young Rascals. In 1977, he became a firefighter for the New York City Fire Department in order to pursue his acting career. As a firefighter, he served 10 years with FDNY Engine Co. 89 and Ladder Co. 50 in the Bronx. His first major role was in the 1985 firefighter film Turk 182.
McGee lives in Los Angeles, Studio City, CA with his wife, Stephanie and their four rescue dogs. He's apparently happily married, but there's something about him, makes me think he would fool around with a man (the things he says and he likes to jokingly kiss guys). It's kind of weird how you imagine certain things about a guy, but he strikes me as the kind of guy you could spend hours doing in every position until he cums. Now I do have to say, this is all the imaginings of my furtive mind because he is probably a very nice and respectable man. He just doesn't come across that way.
Anyway, I prefer the kinky, sordid version, that his marriage is just a cover story. No-one correct me.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Silver Skies (2016) - Shirtless pool scene. Gangster Squad (2013) Moneyball (2011) The Fighter (2010) No Place Like Home (2008) - Rear nudity, shirtless bath scene. Rescue Me (TV Series 2004 - 2007) - Sex scene Miracle on 34th Street (1994) - Rear nudity. Basic Instinct (1992) Backdraft (1991) - Shirtless scene. Crash and Burn (1990) - Shirtless scene.

Sue Lyon became famously reticent about speaking to the press after she stopped acting, giving a rare statement in 1996 that lambasted the effect Lolita had had in her life. "My destruction as a person dates from that movie," she said. "I defy any pretty girl who is rocketed to stardom at 14 in a sex-nymphet role to stay on a level path thereafter." While there have been appraisals of Nabokov's novel and Kubrick's film, Lyon has been markedly absent from the cultural conversation. James Fenwick, senior lecturer in the Department of Media Arts and Communication at Sheffield Hallam University, says that "what is missing from these studies is the voice of Lyon and of the way in which she experienced the production of Lolita. She is absent, silent, and silenced". Obvious parallels to the source novel arise here: in an essay titled The Art of Persuasion in Nabokov's Lolita, Nomi Tamir-Ghez writes that "not only is Lolita's voice silenced, her point of view, the way she sees the situation and feels about it, is rarely mentioned."
But I think being young in Hollywood – we've seen it 1,000 times with young actresses – they'll pull you to the top, let you do whatever you want, until you do one thing that's too much, and then they'll just destroy you."
Today, the iconography associated with Lolita (1962) has been adopted in varying degrees of earnest by wider pop culture. Those heart-shaped sunglasses, symbolic of knowingly babyish kitsch, have become a stand in for "sex-kitten" tendencies – wilfully ignoring the dark elements of the story it cribs from.
By making his version of Dolores a wordly participant, Kubrick's adaptation set off a domino effect that continues to poison pop culture to this day. She appears in the lyrics of the song Don't Stand So Close to Me by The Police, that details a teacher's sexual attraction to one of his students, in which one lyric reads: "He sees her / He starts to shake and cough / Just like the old man in / That book by Nabokov". Or she rears her head as the sordid moniker used to describe disgraced sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's private jet: the "Lolita Express". In 1992, Ellen Von Unwerth shot Kate Moss for Glamour Italia, in a cover and spread titled "Charming Lolita". In the photos, 18-year-old Moss is styled with a red lollipop, a doll, ringlet curls – years earlier, John Galliano had selected the 15-year-old to open his show as his "Lolita", launching her career as a forever-young waif. This alone reflects how the word has become a stand-in for a young girl who is a willing participant in her own premature sexualisation.
The troubling legacy of the Lolita story, 60 years on

jang siwoo – dad
born: 12 january 1956
status: college maths professor
phone contact: dad/harin
the way this man spoils her… she’s a daddy’s girl for sure. he had always been more understanding about harin’s dreams between him and his wife, but would gently coax her to do what eunkyung wanted
when harin told her parents about being casted for sm, he was hesitant but could see how excited she was, so he spoke with eunkyung about it to change her mind. siwoo always encouraged harin to follow her dreams and would rent out musicals from their local blockbuster for them to watch together
she stayed in close contact with her dad when she was a trainee and they would call every week and just give updates on life. he was the first person she told when she was added to girls’ generation and she sent him their debut album. he’s always supported her and would brag about her to his students
their relationship is very sweet and she’s really just his baby girl
son eunkyung – mom
born: 25 july 1961
status: emergency room doctor
phone contact: mum/harin
she was kind of hard on harin. their relationship was sweeter when she was younger, but by the time she was nine, their relationship had begun to sour. eunkyung was very against harin having a career in the arts and tried to steer her to becoming a doctor. when harin told her she wanted to be an idol, they fought about it for a week before coming to an agreement
harin’s relationship with her mom didn’t improve for a while. they rarely spoke on the phone and would only hear how the other was doing through hajooon and siwoo. harin visited her family for the first time on mother’s day in 2011 and it ended in an arguments between the mother and daughter, and they didn’t speak to each other for two years after
they started mending their relationship in late 2014 when eunkyung sent harin a message to encourage her through the hate she was receiving for her relationship with jungshin. they slowly began to talk to each other again and saw each other for the first time at hajoon’s university graduation. they ended up getting a drink together and just talking about everything and mended their relationship
their relationship nowadays is very sweet and is the relationship harin wished they always had
harrison blake hajoon jang – brother
born: 7 december 1992
status: restaurant owner
phone contact: jang hajoon/harin noona
this is her baby, she basically raised him. no, but seriously. hajoon is her baby brother and she takes such good care of him. when they were younger, they were so so so close and harin was constantly taking care of him. as they grew older, hajoon became protective of harin but she told him to stop bcs… he’s a baby in her eyes
he was super sad when she left to go to korea to be a trainee but he understood that she was living out her dream so he tried to be happy for her. whenever harin would call her dad, hajoon would also talk to her for a while before they hung up. harin was the first person hajoon told about wanting to be a chef and own a restaurant, and she supported him every step of the way. she supported him whenever he was struggling in culinary school, she helped him buy the building for his restaurant, and she is an investor in the restaurant
they still have a close relationship and talk often
jang poppins – dog
born: august 2018
breed: cavalier king charles spaniel
harin found poppins when she was driving home one day and saw him on the road. he was a little puppy and looked very small and injured. harin took him to a vet check him out and make sure he was healthy, and ended up having to leave him overnight
when she returned the next day, the vet said he had improved a lot. harin ended up adopting him two days later. when she first got poppins, he would always stick to her side at all times. he was very nervous around strangers and would growl at them a lot (he still does tbh)
after five months, poppins got more comfortable and felt safer, so he began to act like a normal puppy and now, in present time, they’re absolute besties!

The summer of 1967 was brutally hot in Los Angeles, and Tom Selleck sat in his beat-up Ford Galaxie, drenched in sweat, waiting outside a casting office. He had just finished another audition one of the dozens he had attended that year, hoping for a break. The casting director had barely looked at him before dismissing him with a polite, “We’ll be in touch.” He knew what that meant. Rejection was something he was getting used to, but it never got easier. That day, as he sat in the car, gripping the steering wheel in frustration, he made a promise to himself he wouldn’t quit. He would keep showing up until Hollywood had no choice but to notice him.
Born January 29, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan, Tom Selleck grew up in Sherman Oaks, California, in a strict but supportive household. His father, Robert Selleck, was a successful real estate investor, while his mother, Martha, was a devoted homemaker. The Sellecks valued discipline and hard work, traits that Tom absorbed from a young age. He was a tall, athletic kid, excelling in basketball and dreaming of a future in sports.
At Grant High School, his talent on the court earned him a scholarship to the University of Southern California, where he initially studied business administration. But fate had other plans. While at USC, a drama professor noticed his deep voice and natural presence, encouraging him to try acting. Skeptical but curious, Tom took a few classes, and before he knew it, the stage felt more like home than the basketball court.
His first break came in the late 1960s with commercial work. He became the face of Pepsi, appearing in multiple ads that gave him enough money to survive while he chased bigger roles. He landed small parts in TV shows like “Lancer” (1969) and “The F.B.I.” (1968-1970), but Hollywood wasn’t rolling out the red carpet for him just yet. To make matters worse, just as he was gaining momentum, he was drafted into the California National Guard. For six years, he served, putting his acting career on hold. When he returned, he had to start over.
The real turning point came in 1980 when he was cast as Thomas Magnum in “Magnum, P.I.” The role was tailor-made for him charming, rugged, and effortlessly cool. With his signature mustache, Hawaiian shirts, and a red Ferrari, Selleck became the face of 1980s television. The show was an instant hit, running for eight seasons and making him a household name. He won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in 1984 and was suddenly one of the most sought-after stars in Hollywood.
At the height of his fame, he was offered the role of Indiana Jones in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981), but his contract with “Magnum, P.I.” forced him to turn it down. The role went to Harrison Ford, and while missing out on such a legendary character could have been a career setback, Selleck didn’t let it define him. Instead, he expanded his career into films, starring in “Three Men and a Baby” (1987), “Quigley Down Under” (1990), and “Mr. Baseball” (1992).
His personal life saw its ups and downs. He was married to model Jacqueline Ray from 1971 to 1982, adopting her son Kevin during their marriage. After their divorce, he married Jillie Mack in 1987, and they welcomed a daughter, Hannah, in 1988. Wanting to escape the Hollywood chaos, Selleck moved to a ranch in Ventura County, California, where he embraced a quieter life, tending to his avocado farm.
Even as television changed, Selleck remained a constant presence. He took on a recurring role in “Friends” (1996-2000) as Dr. Richard Burke, Monica’s charming older boyfriend. The role introduced him to a new generation of fans. Later, he found another career-defining role as Frank Reagan in “Blue Bloods” (2010-present), where he plays the steadfast New York City police commissioner.
As he turns 80 today, Tom Selleck continues to command respect with his effortless charm and dedication to his craft. Age has done little to dim his appeal his presence on screen remains as commanding as ever.
