Salas's Draconic Transformation
Birthday gift for one my players in the Magic the Gathering planeswalker campaign (April 2024).
Salas has been fascinated by dragons ever since he got off Ixalan, but funnily enough his draconic magic still looks like things that look like dragons but aren't. Here, he's channeling the Ikorian apex monster Vadrok for the spell Draconic Transformation.

Note
If I cast a spell without paying it's mana cost, can I cast it for alternate or additional costs? This is for a Vadrok deck if the manner in which the spell is cast matters. I just want to overload Cyclonic rift from my graveyard every turn.
Tumblr media
Alternate costs? No.
Additional costs? Yes.
When you cast a spell without paying its mana cost, you're already paying an alternate cost of 0. Any time you're casting a spell and not paying the printed cost, that's an alternate cost and you can only ever pay one alternate cost to cast a spell.
So why can't you choose to overload Cyclonic Rift rather than casting it for free with Vadrok? That's because Vadrok's ability is what's allowing you to cast the spell at all, so you have to pay the alternate cost it dictates if you want to cast it.
Additional costs such as Kicker costs are different, however, since you can always choose to pay an additional cost for a spell no matter what cost or alternate cost you're using to cast it in the first place. You still need to pay the mana for these costs, however. For example, if you cast Jilt off of Vadrok's trigger, you can pay 1R to get the kicker effect, but you can't get it for free.

Traveling through Vadrok's lair towards Lavabrink was dangerous enough with the injured and ill, but Jirina Kudro and Vivien Reid did not expect the help and rescue they received.
Aka I got mad about how Lukka was handled and I have made him live in the Blood and Songbirds-verse.

A penny for your thoughts on a secondary theme for budget Vadrok, Act of Treason Tribal? Sacrificing feels too mean for casual game night but buffing the controlled creature seems destined to backfire.
These are just words, you're saying!

Incorrect MtG Quote
Vivien: I didn't want it to come to this, Lukka, but I will make your death quick.
*Vadrok rockets from the sky, mauling Lukka and tearing him limb from limb*
Vivien: ...After Vadrok is done playing, of course.

ive been lovinggg my vadrok commander deck!!! it uses vadrok apex of thunder + inevitable betrayal to grab my opponents' best creatures out of their libraries and beat them to death with them!!
heres how the engine functions:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
step 1) during your first couple turns, the best thing that can be done is putting [[inevitable betrayal]] in the graveyard. this can be accomplished a number of ways, but usually by tutoring for it and using a spell that draws and discards cards to put it into your graveyard. you want to be casting [[inevitable betrayal]] free from the yard at least on turn 4 (though it doesnt always work out that way, its pretty consistent). i good line here is something like [[gamble]] [[mystical tutor]] [[invert]] to grab it turns 1/2 and something like [[faithless looting]] [[faithful mending]] to discard it, though there are a lot of ways to get it in by turn 3.
step 2) play a cheap value creature turns 2 or 3 to mutate vadrok onto. this tends to be 2-3 mana value creatures that have built-in hexproof/ward or do something like draw a card when they are targeted (since mutating targets). one of my personal favorites is the common [[saiba cryptomancer]]!
step 3) for 4 mana, activate vadrok, apex of thunder's mutate ability to mutate it over the creature. its somewhat rare that mutating another creature on top of the stack is worthwhile, so putting vadrok over tends to be a consistently good call. when this happens, you can choose a noncreature card of mana value 3 or less from your graveyard and play it. i almost always choose inevitable betrayal! use it to grab a strong creature out of an opponent's deck :3 the reason vadrok is so good for this is because unlike most versions of this effect, vadrok doesnt make you exile the card after casting-- it goes right back into your graveyard, letting you do it again and again!
step 4) do it again. use the many mutate creatures in the deck to mutate vadrok some more, getting a free cast each time! theres also lots and lots of spell copy effects in the deck, letting you copy the spell to get a second trigger off and steal another creature!! ive had a chain of four copies of inevitable betrayal resolving before and it feels amazing.
this deck has been one of my recent favorites, and has caused a large meta shift at my table-- nobody wants me to profit off of vadrok too heavily, so people have been cutting their creature bombs from their decks, shifting our table mana values lower. its very fun that nobody wants to run their bombs because i get them for free :)
this deck has been a target for rebuild for me as of late, i think a restructure would do it a lot of good. at the moment, the deck is only $66(!!) and keeps up very well with most midlevel tables, but i would and will definitely be changing some things around soon
id love to hear abour your decks if u want :3 rats are so fun that sounds delightful!!<3
magic the gathering girlies please tell me your stupid decks for your favorite formats I need enrichment and someone to talk about my decks to

Mythe de Vadrok
Lore externe :
“Rielle raconte une histoire ancienne de Vadrok réduisant un sanctuaire humain en cendres. Elle prétend que le feu magique a non seulement détruit la ville, mais aussi effacé tous les souvenirs de son existence ! Naturellement, je n'ai trouvé personne d'autre pour confirmer l'histoire.”

Currently hopping between Ygra, Sound Wave, 11+Amy, and Vadrok. Hopping in this case meaning seeing interesting cards to add, Adding them to the deck list and then just staring blankly at the decklist for 5 mins before closing the tab.
My general thoughts are that Commander is in a good place for what it is but my game designer brain hates what it is.
I’m in a Commander mood, I wanna talk about it more.
What deck(s) are y’all brewing?
What are your takes about the format as a whole?

I'd like to see your take on utilizing Vadrok, Apex of Thunder when you have time... thanks!
VADROK MY BELOVED.
Okay, so it's a Legendary Creature like Alesha is, which means (to me) it's some kind of other entity/spirit that you can holler at. It's the fiercest monster in one of the Ikoria triomes. It generates magical energy while flying, which it unleashes through a blue flame breath attack that always ends in death (in varying ways according to different sages; in one case it destroyed a city with its flames and erased all memories of its existence). It's incredibly mobile and uncontested by other monsters.
As a card, Vadrok, Apex of Thunder is a 3 power, 3 toughness Blue-Red-White Flying First Striker for 3 energy that also has Mutate. You can cast it for its 1 generic, 1 White or Blue, and 2 Red (so 4 energy total) and put it over or under another non-Human creature you own. It turns into the card on top of the stack plus all of the abilities from under it. When Vadrok mutates (either because of itself or because you tack a different Mutate Creature onto it), you can cast a non-Creature card from your graveyard with an energy cost of 3 or less without paying that much energy. Keeping up? No? Well neither am I, I'm not good at the Mutate mechanic.
Also I fucking zoned out and forgot I was typing this. Anyway. Let's make a hastening spell out of this speedy little thude. Despite the fact that it doesn't have Haste. Sigh. Anyway, time to make magic coffee. Let's talk about our energy sources for the 3 casting rather than the Mutate casting.
Blue: Water.
Red: Coffee grounds (or however people make coffee).
White: Creamer or milk (if applicable), otherwise uhhh just huck a howlite or some kind of quartz near the completed drink.
I mean, come on, this is our magical morning coffee, except with an Elemental Dinosaur Cat's influence. WHO DOESN'T WANT THAT? ...Well, probably people like me who don't drink coffee. Aw well, you can't win them all!

My Current Magic The Gathering AO3 Fics
Almost exclusively Streets of New Capenna-based. Warning: the lewd ones are under the cut.
Last updated: July 5, 2023
Beyond The Planes [no ships] (complete) - The Father of Machines isn't too delighted by modern Phyrexians. The Benevolent Goddess has an idea.
Blood and Songbirds [background Edith Maestro (OC)/Emery Black (OC), Spara/Xander, Jaren/Jinnie] (complete) - A vampire demon hybrid is certainly rare, enough so that meeting another one awakens a fatherly side of Xander that he's not familiar with. But after the Adversary rears his head and old threats return, Xander finds out the hard way that he's in for the long haul. A reworking of the Streets of New Capenna set plus beyond to help me develop my OCs and wrap up some SNC plotlines that seem like they've been abandoned in favor of the Phyrexian plotline. And then suffering beyond that because I'm a big fan.
Five Times Falco Spara Fell In Love With Xander (And One Time Xander Did) [Spara/Xander, implied/background Evelyn/Xander] (complete) - Spara and Xander have fallen in love over and over again. Especially on Spara's side. (This takes place in my Blood and Songbirds-verse, which is only apparent with the last scene.)
In The Interim [Jaren/Jinnie] (in progress) - A series of scenes set in my Blood and Songbirds universe, after the end of Blood and Songbirds. Tags will be updated with each new chapter.
White Fires of Memory [Jirina/Lukka] (complete) - Traveling through Vadrok's lair towards Lavabrink was dangerous enough with the injured and ill, but Jirina Kudro and Vivien Reid did not expect the help and rescue they received.
Tumblr media
Expected Partners [Spara/Xander, Ziatora/Xander, Raffine/Xander, Jetmir/Xander] (complete) - When a vampire reaches a certain age, they tend to stick with the same partners simply because they know what to expect. Xander often found himself sharing a bed with the other crime lords, which led to a nice variety. He didn’t much care for working, so he often let them take the lead. We're not gonna pretend that this is anything more than porn, let's be real.
For Ransom [Spara/Daniel (OC), other higher-up Brokers/Daniel (OC)] (complete) *implied/referenced rape/noncon, but not at Spara's hand; mature, not explicit* - If you accused any of the Brokers of being soft, most would toss you out of a window. But even then, one devil in all of New Capenna has the higher-ups wrapped around his finger, and there are plenty of people who would love to take advantage of that...
Fucked Up Cycles [Elspeth/Xander, other relationships with Xander referenced] (complete) *Omegaverse* - Xander wasn't expecting his heat cycle to come early. Luckily, a certain planeswalker happens to be an alpha and is willing to lend a hand.
Mismatched [Perrie/Kros] (complete) *Omegaverse* - Kros is late to meet with Perrie regarding their next mission, so Perrie goes to find him. You see the tags and the rating, you know how this ends.
What He Wants [Nixilis/Xander noncon] (complete) *rape/noncon* - Instead of killing the head of the Maestros, Ob Nixilis has other plans.
