*Sighs and puts head down* Additional thing to put on the fire of Cinder and Winter round 3 communication edition. I recall you made a point about Cinder being rightfully angry as being represented by the glass Grimm in the hotel. And in general her relating/sympathizing with Grimm.
With Winter and Weiss' conversation in Volume 3 - Winter summons a Beowulf and the posture is frankly affectionate. Of the two Weiss favors Glyphs over Summons though she does use the Atlesian Knight as her go to double partner. Winter however leans towards Summons first. Platonic or not, of course the Grimm Cinderella would be going to the ball (to fight) and meet someone who has a parallel to the glass Grimm statutes. Also I must ask - with the possible Romantic connotations what is the Ozlem refraction?
yeah th. the cinwin curse is that it keeps making more sense the longer you look. the allusions add up for an enemies-to-lovers reflection of ozlem – the maiden’s tears heal her lover’s blindness, gerda thaws kai by thawing his heart so he can cry. dancing and fighting aren’t so different, cinderella attends the ball two nights before the prince smears pitch on the stairs, v7 and 8 end with showcase duels between winter and cinder and winter vowing to make cinder pay.
on the thematic fractal side, cinder is a representation of everything salem is supposed to be (selfish, arrogant, cruel, wants to watch the world burn) wrapped up in the question of “and does this justify the suffering that made her?” – and winter embodies ozma’s supposed fatal flaw, the heart that is easily swayed, but reveals the truth that this is his saving grace because it’s her heart that saves her. they are also both quite plainly narrative complements – winter doesn’t have a clear-cut salem other than cinder and cinder likewise doesn’t have a clear-cut ozma other than winter, unless one wanted to argue that jaune ought to be read as an ozma.
so the question is whether this is a specifically romantic fractal or not, and because a) heralding the ozlem reconciliation by refracting it through another notionally impossible enemies-to-lovers romantic arc makes quite a bit of narrative sense, and b) there’s all this other stuff, and c) the actual narrative route to get them there is straightforward because both of them seem to be heading toward some kind of major upheaval, cinder with the increasing tempo of her power struggle with salem and winter with the weight of ‘don’t come back’ and everything on her shoulders colliding with the shock of her sister coming back, and “they take off at the same time from vale/vacuo and meet in the middle only to ricochet in an unexpected direction” is really plausible.
oh yeah and rwby chibi did a skit overtly indicating that cinder’s sapphic. nothing to see here, i’m sure.
#you’ve heard of ‘their eyes are the color of each others souls’ now get ready for#the grimm maiden and the prince whose soul manifests as a grimm. 😐

I’ve discussed this with sone others, but do you think Rhodes was doing the best he could given his situation? Mister of the fandom seems to agree Rhodes cared more about the law than cinder, but I’ve heard arguments that that wasn’t necessarily the case? By training cinder at all he was potentially breaking the law, and he likely truly believed that if he had just smuggled her out of the hotel that she’d always be running or looking over her shoulder, there’s every chance he truly believed what he was doing was the best way to help her as opposed to being afraid to risk himself for her sake.
Well. That's. Rather odd. Rhodes Discourse is a weird area for me.
I honestly do agree Rhodes, much like a lot of Atlasian Huntsman, does have his mind set moreso on the law than doing the moral thing. There is the idea that even training Cinder at all that he did break the law that can be worth thought, however, considering from what we see of Atlas later on it's evidently against the law to even possess and fire a weapon without registration.
"That's all you'll ever do" is an interesting line, given his station. Considering Atlas is a strict nation of LAW and ORDER(tm), there's probably reason to suggest they would've probably hunted her down and jailed her regardless of the circumstances.
Alas, this is the problem as I see it. It was clear Cinder's Madame was abusing her, since she seemed to be the sole "employee" (slave) at The Glass Unicorn. While I have no doubt Rhodes thought he may have been doing the best he could at the time, he obviously didn't think outside the box enough and (much like Clover in V7) reverted back to the Good Soldiers Follow Orders mentality.
It absolutely led to his death and Cinder's utter hatred of the Huntsman/Huntress system and Atlas as a whole. It's also something I hope gets brought up again when Cinder's worldview of Power and Strength are Security and Freedom gets shattered.
#rwby#cinder fall#rhodes rwby#for the record#Yes#I am saying Rhodes should've smuggled Cinder out of there and damn the consequences for the both of them#There's only so much one should stomach before living up to what they profess#Alas#Rhodes I believe only professed that laws were laws and Cinder murdered three people#no nuance#no context#it's a tragedy#and all Cinder learned was that you cannot trust anyone#even those that open their hands to help will close them into fists to hurt the second you step out of line

The Big Bad Wolf?
Ruby is obviously based of off Little Red Riding Hood. When RWBY was first revealed, some of us may have been under the assumption that the “Big Bad Wolf” in Ruby’s story were the Beowolves that she was seen fighting in the “Red” trailer. Then in V8, we were introduced to The Hound who we may assume may be the true Big Bad Wolf in Ruby’s story.
But what if The Hound isn’t the true Big Bad Wolf?
In the V8 episode “Dark”, we saw that the Hound was actually a silver-eyed warrior trapped inside the monster and shortly after that we were given the assumption by Ruby that this means her mother’s fate is similar to that of The Hound’s. The Hound is rather fitting, seeing as in the story of Little Red, her grandmother was eaten by the Big Bad Wolf, therefore being inside of him much like the Silver Eyed Warrior was.
But as some people have pointed out on tumblr, RWBY isn’t that cut and dry when it comes to giving us answers. Ruby simply made that assumption of her mother being a Hound on her own, but if RWBY’s storytelling is anything to go by that may not be the case.
Another thing pointed out by keen-eyed fans is that Cinder’s arm appears to be growing. It seems that it’s consuming her more and more starting it its debut in V5 where it was a little past her elbow but come V7, it’s crawled all the way up to her shoulder.
People have speculated that The Hound is in fact a preview of Cinder’s potential fate should she continue on the path she is taking, with the Grimm arm consuming her more and more due to her negative emotions.
Now that I’ve recapped all that, I’ve been wondering.
What if ‘The Big Bad Wolf’ in Ruby’s story is not the Hound, not the Beowolves, but Cinder?
The Big Bad Wolf in the story of Little Red Riding Hood is shown to be hungry. He devours both Little Red and her grandmother, only to be stopped when the huntsman kills him and frees Little Red.
Cinder in RWBY is shown to be constantly hungry in different ways. When she was young she was always hungry for food having to settle for the scraps of the hotel employees just to get by, and now as an adult she’s hungry for power and is constantly hunting down the maidens’ powers to sate it.
“It burns. Like hunger. I like it.” - Cinder Fall talking about how she was only able to absorb half of the Fall Maiden’s power, Volume 3 Chapter 7.
Not only that, but dogs are known to be loyal and obedient to their owners, and one way that some owners train for that obedience is through shocking them with shock collars. For those who know her backstory, I think you know where I’m going with this. Cinder has been told all her life to be obedient and was punished for it physically if she failed to do so. First by Madame, then by Salem.
I think it’s safe to say at this point that Cinder is Ruby’s villain in the story, seeing as they’re both character foils of each other and have fought since the very first episode of the series even when they didn’t know each other yet. And who’s Little Red Riding Hood’s antagonist? The Big Bad Wolf.
Will this mean Cinder will get a wolf-like appearance due to the Grimm arm consuming her later on? Perhaps. We’ll just have to wait and see, but this is my speculation as of right now.
Side note that’s not meant to be taken seriously, but in the RWBY chibi skit where Team RWBY does a stage play of Little Red Riding hood, Yang is quoted saying,
“Whoah! Smells like someone’s got some big, bad, BREATH!”
and in the more recent volumes, Cinder is shown breathing fire. I just think it’d be amusing if RWBY Chibi ended up predicting yet another thing to happen in the main series, lol.

Here’s the problem, Jacques needed to be stopped LONG before he worked for Salem
But who’s gonna stop him? Not Weiss apparently, not the white fang, even with a council seat Robyn could only conceivable do so much when the rest of the council is on Jacques’ side,
So as a result, it seems like all of jacques’ horrible labor practices that resulted in things like afsm’s brand or the dwarfs if illia’s parents didn’t matter until it helped Salem, since non if the heroes, not even Blake who claims to be a social activist, even tried to do anything about it until he worked for Salem
Weiss didn’t take diwn Jacques, she foiled Salem’s plan which coincidentally involved Jacques
I agree. As a deceitful scum of a human being who abused his family, monopolized the dust industry, and consistently mistreated his workers (showcasing his virulent racism), he needed to be stopped long before he was an accomplice of Watts, and by extension, Salem.
[ID: a black screen in which the word but is written in large white letters]
You are blaming the wrong people over allowing Jacques Schnee to get away with these atrocities. It was not a lack of effort on the part of the heroes, but lack of control within the society that let him rise in the first place.
Part 1: Atlas (The System)
Jacques Schnee committed many crimes, and ideally would have faced punishment for them at some point long before the election. So why didn’t he? Put as simply as possible - he was a very wealthy businessman working closely with government in the richest, most inequitable kingdom on Remnant.
Over the course of the Atlas Arc, and during the Weiss segments of volume 4, we get a few quotes showcasing just how close the SDC and Atlesian Military were. “You’ve been a trusted friend and ally to this family, James.” from Volume 4. “These drones report to the SDC, not the General” from Weiss in Volume 8, talking about robots that are otherwise identical to military bots.
The SDC worked in close partnership with the Military because they supplied Dust - the most powerful and versatile fuel/elemental/energy source there is. Because James holds two council seats as the head of Atlas Academy and the Military, he holds the most power over Atlas’ future and how it functions. The SDC is directly responsible for supplying hardlight dust for Atlas’ prisons, Atlas’ protective border, and heat for Mantle’s heating grid - something they need to survive for crying out loud. Ironwood had no issue working with the SDC because it directly benefited him - Atlas could be more secure and better armed. Add this into the mentality he so lovingly demonstrated in v7 - “What’s more important, the fate of the world or a few city blocks?” - and we can easily see that Jimmy was willing to write off the un-ethicality of the company as something Atlas would endure and be better for.
We don’t know the inner workings of Atlas’ legal system - but we can safely assume the following. 1) The Atlesian Military oversees soliders, police, huntsmen, special operatives and other generally law enforcement folks. 2) Criminals are brought to trial for their crimes, as mentioned by Sleet in v7. Jacques Schnee is very rich, and he holds a lot of prestige as one of the Atlas Elite. Any cases brought against him for the mistreatment of his workers could potentially be settled out of court and out of the public eye so he can keep his legal record as clean as his coat. (This last sentence may be projection due to playing a lot of Ace Attorney, but I am convinced that’s what he would do in that situation.)
It’s also entirely possible that Atlas is so rottenly racist that those crimes against the Faunus were not punishable, or not sensationally newsworthy enough to provoke public outrage.
The system didn’t care about Adam, or Ilia, or Cinder, or any of the other lives ruined by the culture of hate toward people considered ‘beneath’ the Atlas ideal. The grandeur of having the best Dust company, or best hotel, or best military in the world came before any compassion toward the blue-collar work put in the work to make it happen. (Collar is not a pun, it describes manual labor istg).
OF COURSE the protagonists cared about the abuse that Jacques Schnee inflicted upon the world. Of course Adam, Ilia, Whitley, Weiss, Cinder, etc mattered! The narrative says that they do matter, but Atlas’s culture drowns out their voices because they are children, they are Faunus, they are not worth the effort. This is an intentional in the writing of the show - Atlas is hypocritical and dangerous and powerful, and horrible people with power do horrible things.
No one had the potential to remove him until there was something concrete, something tangible, something so directly tied to the man and not the business that they could bust him on.
Part 2: Who couldn’t stop him and Why (Rebuttal)
The system wouldn’t stop him because Jacques was serving such a benefit to society with the excavation of Dust that his other misgivings were ignored. So why didn’t someone outside of the system stop him, you say?
Let’s start with Blake.
Blake is a social activist, and HAD BEEN FIGHTING THE SDC FOR YEARS PRIOR TO THE EVENTS OF THE SHOW. She knows firsthand, even better than Weiss, what the SDC has done to the Faunus and what they've gotten away with. She became burned out of all the raids and violence and abuse she suffered with the White Fang, but rather than become apathetic and numb, decided to try becoming a Huntress to fight for something noble and good - as opposed to vigilante justice.
Blake doesn't launch herself at Jacques' throat the first time she sees him in person because that wouldn't change anything. She knows it wouldn’t. She spent years stealing from SDC trains, burning racist shops, and opposing him openly (before she out as a Faunus, she was bad mouthing the SDC to the heiress herself). The system was so rotten that cutting the head off the snake with a mustache wouldn’t guarantee anything. What authority would Blake have to confront him? Its implied that huntsmen don’t have the exact same authority as police, since Weiss asks James if she’s even allowed to arrest Jacques. (Ace Ops excepting since they are given special authority by Ironwood).
Weiss was in no position to overthrow her father for the same reason - she is just a Huntress. She has insider information on his mistreatment of her family, but she’d have to make a strong case against, presumably, Jacques’ own lawyers, (again, Ace Attorney mind talking, if she tried to take him to court). Money talks in Atlas, it would be easy for Jacques to spin a narrative about how emotionally disturbed she is. The Schnees are sorta celebrities, and rich pricks love drama - its safe to assume she would get nowhere, especially once the racists learn she wants better working conditions for the Faunus.
Robyn tried, so hard, to fight the system from point of morality. Fighting for the under privileged because it was right. She knew her best shot at making real changes was to become a member of the council. She believed, once her chance at the council was ripped out from underneath her, that Jacques must have won with Ironwood’s interference. After all, it was ‘Ironwood’s Robot’ who killed her supporters that night. (Also supported by her surprise that Jacques didn’t know about Ironwood’s secret plan - she assumed they were in cahoots.)
Robyn was in a position to be opposing Jacques Schnee the hardest, being a well known face in Mantle, an adult capable of spending the necessary years to fight such systemic problems, and well loved by it’s people. But even she met with resistance by, you guessed it, the Atlesian Law. And we all know who the head of Atlesian Law enforcement is.
(and she still didn’t give up!! at her lowest, she stole from military vehicles to protect Mantle and to give a direct F U to the man with his head in the clouds! queen shit!)
And the council itself?
Only the council would have the ability to stop Jacques from monopolizing the dust industry, from his oversight and neglecting the dangers of dust mining and the impact it’s had on minority populations. But the council until the events of volume 7 was split, with James Ironwood having total control of the nation by virtue of being a Headmaster and General, and refusing to risk anything that might compromise Atlas’s status. Even if they wanted to fight the system from inside, they couldn’t because Ironwood held two seats, and any decision he we wanted to make would go his way or sit at an impasse (2-2) until they caved to his demands. “The council is so scared they’ll agree to whatever he wants...” - Pietro Polendina, V7C1.
The reason the council was listening to Jacques in v7, at the dinner party, was because they saw Ironwood as a bigger threat - they were tired of James doing whatever he pleased. If Jacques could help them take Ironwood down a peg, then that was progress. (Yay, politics!)
TL;DR
Jacques should have been stopped before it got the point where he needed to be busted for ties to election fraud/massacre/Salem. But the reason he wasn’t is because his industry is a huge part of Atlesian society, and he embodies all the ideals of Atlesian supremacy - which made him an ally of James Ironwood and by extension, the military. He has accumulated many crimes, but his money (from the monopoly of the SDC), his influence (dust being important to Atlesian society/military), and the culture he was raised in (high class/low class, the literal overshadowing of the less fortunate) made him virtually untouchable.
These posts, here and here, cover this same idea with a few additional points - that RWBY+Co shouldn’t be responsible for fixing all the societal problems while also trying to deal with someone planning to nuke the world... because that might be a higher priority.

Are there any characters who have different semblances than in canon? Or those who have unknown semblances actually shown?
A few characters, yeah!
Last year, when I talked about how Semblances were adjusted in the Redux, I sorted characters according to the degree to which their Semblance was modified. They got placed under one of five headings:
Characters who had their Semblances slightly adjusted.
Characters who had their Semblances completely overhauled.
Characters who had their Semblances removed and replaced with something else.
Characters with no Semblances.
Characters who previously lacked a Semblance, and were given one.
While plenty of characters (Yang, Sun, Pyrrha, etc) had their Semblances left intact, some needed to be modified to fit the new parameters that I created for the Semblance category system. Others had to be adjusted because of the out-of-context/meta issues surrounding them (like James’ Semblance being tied to ableism).
The rest of this post is going under a readmore. Potential spoilers ahead.
Ruby’s Semblance was the first one to get revamped. Instead of that weird quantum mechanics thing where she can disassemble and reassemble herself on a molecular level, she gets plain ol’ superspeed. No more transforming into clusters of petals and passing through narrow gaps. Ruby now has to work within the limitations and constraints imposed by superspeed: turning on a dime, braking and stopping abruptly, and weaving between obstacles without losing velocity. When she arrives at Beacon, she actually ends up becoming rather chummy with Oobleck because he offers to give her some pointers. The two of them share the same Semblance, and Oobleck is painfully familiar with learning how to not run headlong into things.
The Schnee Semblance (Weiss et al) got changed from being a grab bag of miscellaneous powers, to a single, definitive ability: summoning the thralls of defeated Grimm. I talk about the issues surrounding Weiss’ glyphs in greater depth here and here, so I won’t waste too much time rehashing those points. Basically, I wanted to decrease Weiss’ reliance on her Semblance, and force her to have a much more agile fighting style reminiscent of Winter’s fencing (as seen in V3.E3). It also means that when Weiss arrives at Beacon, she effectively hasn’t unlocked her Semblance yet. The fact that her family’s Semblance is publicly known makes Weiss extremely self-conscious. There’s a degree of expectation that she’s held to because everyone knows what it’s going to be eventually. The pressure that puts on Weiss frequently leaves her frustrated and insecure, in addition to overly self-critical. (It would be the difference between some random person unlocking their Semblance and getting told, “Hey, good job,” whereas Weiss unlocks it and everyone goes, “Well it’s about time. Took you long enough.”)
Ren’s Semblance is more or less the same as it was pre-V7/8, in that it allows him to cloak his emotions (along with the emotions of whoever he comes into contact with). It no longer enables him to see those multi-colored petal-things that float around people. Semblances that conceal one’s emotions from Grimm are direct responses to a sense that Grimm have, called algeaception (the detection of negatively-valenced emotions).
Raven’s Semblance, while it does enable her to teleport, isn’t tied to people that she shares an emotional link with. Instead, it allows her to move between two locations, but only if they’re places that she’s physically been to beforehand. If, for example, Raven wanted to teleport to the City of Mistral, she would have to concentrate on a specific location within the city (like a bar, or a hotel) and recall it with near-perfect clarity. Her Semblance requires a good deal of concentration in order to pull off. There were a few reasons why I ditched the emotional link component of her canon Semblance, which I’ll discuss on a later date. For now, the short version was that I wanted her Semblance to be something that she had direct control over, in the sense that Raven could choose what places she wanted to visit, in order to have the ability to teleport to them later on. That, and I was never fond of the show using Raven’s Semblance as “proof” that she still had an emotional connection to the daughter that she abandoned.
Cinder’s Semblance allows her to modify temperature and superheat things that she comes into contact with. Where it differs from the canon is that she can’t manipulate the things that she superheats (so she can’t heat sand particles into glass and then kinetically levitate them like she does in the show). By limiting her Semblance to just one specific thing, it forces Cinder to be a lot more creative—a lot more cunning—with how she goes about using it.
Jupiter’s Semblance was described as being able to turn water into vapor, so presumably, converting it from a liquid to a gaseous state. Given how oddly specific this Semblance was, I decided to tweak it. In the Redux, Jupiter and Neptune both have hydrokinetic Semblances. Their Semblances, similar to Weiss’, are now hereditary.
Marcus’ Semblance doesn’t actually enable him to “steal” someone else’s. What it does is temporarily dampen or suppress a target’s Semblance, rendering them unable to use it for a certain amount of time. However, because Marcus has been using his Semblance on Mercury for years, it resulted in a medical condition called subapothymia. Mercury’s Semblance isn’t gone; it’s just been severely dampened from long-term, recurring exposure to his father’s Semblance, to the point where the effect is now semi-permanent. One of the reasons why Mercury works for Cinder (and by extension, Salem) is because it gives him access to medical treatment through Watts. Watts was one of the world’s foremost experts in Aura and Semblance research—as such, he has the know-how to try and cure (or at the least, improve) Mercury’s condition. Changing the way that Marcus’ Semblance works created a scenario in which Mercury has a motive to stick around and help Salem, apart from simply wanting to be “top dog” in her new world.
James had his Semblance axed for fairly obvious reasons. The same goes for Hazel. Instead of giving either of them new Semblances, I opted to leave them without, because I wanted to have characters who managed to be successful fighters despite lacking them. I always found it fascinating that characters like Roman were consistently portrayed as credible threats (similar to Mai and Ty Lee in A:TLA, who were both deadly fighters despite being nonbenders), and I wanted to continue that trend with other characters in the show.
Sienna no longer has a Semblance, partly because her canon Semblance no longer fits under the category system that I created for the Redux. The other reason why I nixed it is because Sienna is now a non-combatant.
While there wasn’t anything wrong with Coco’s Semblance, strictly speaking, I wanted to get rid of it in order to have more characters who manage to get by without them. Despite only being a Second Year student, Coco is widely regarded as one of Beacon’s strongest fighters. It’s a fact that gives Jaune and Weiss some comfort, since at the beginning of the story, neither of them has unlocked theirs yet. For them, Coco is proof that you don’t need a Semblance to be dangerous.
As I mentioned earlier, Oobleck now has a speed Semblance like Ruby and Harriet. Port was given an intangibility Semblance, a power which allows him to render himself (or things that he comes into contact with) temporarily untouchable. Saber was given a terrakinetic Semblance, while Joanna was given an absorption Semblance (like Yang and Adam). Russel now has an invisibility Semblance like May, Dove has a pyrokinetic Semblance, and Sky has an acoustic Semblance (which allows him to amplify or increase the intensity of sounds that he makes, or of the things that he comes into contact with).
Maria and Marrow are both getting new Semblances, but I haven’t decided on what these will be just yet. Maria, because her canon Semblance is nearly identical to the extrasensory perception that’s already a built-in feature of Aura (see: Pyrrha’s speech to Jaune during the Emerald Forest, where she describes a function of Aura as “[feeling] like you were being watched”). Marrow, because it makes me really uncomfortable that an in-universe minority—a literal dog Faunus—activates his Semblance by using a command given to pets.
There are a few characters (like Tai and Summer) who I haven’t changed because I’m waiting to see if the canon will eventually unveil what their Semblances are (or if they ever had one to begin with). For now, those characters are TBD.
The only characters whose Semblances I can’t talk about are Qrow, Clover, Pietro, Penny, Ozma, Ozpin, and Oscar.
In the case of Qrow and Clover (who both have probability Semblances), it’s because it would give away crucial aspects of Qrow’s character arc.
In the case of Pietro and Penny (who both lack Semblances), it’s because it would reveal the circumstances of Penny’s creation.
In the case of all of Ozma’s hosts (who all lack Semblances), it’s because it would give away major changes to how the Redux handles magic (and by extension, the effects of the curse).
Trust me; you don’t want to have those spoiled.

I get finding early Jaune annoying, but tag-lurking for that purpose ain't healthy. 'Sides, V6-8 made leaps & bounds WRT his screentime balance & watchability (loved the 'hoverbikes OK for a dude who might've never seen one before' parts).
Oh for sure, I hated Jaune until like v6 really. However, just because I didn't like him or his character, doesn't mean it wasn't a good direction for his growth.
Which like, mini tangent, you can hate a character while still understanding their actions/development. Like just saying.
But yeah v1-v3 Jaune is this naive goofy dude who was told by his sister or dad or smth(I forget it was real early) that all he has to do is show confidence to get the girl. He tries that with Weiss, a lot, it doesn't work. It's a very irritating character trait, and then you see Pyrrha, a beloved character, pining after him while he doesn't notice her until near the end. Which is another mini gripe that was sorta forced in a sense but like time constraints I get it. So he finally gets more confident thanks to Pyrrha's training and reinforcement and then she's killed after he realizes his feelings.
I think v5-v6 is my favorite version of Jaune before I started liking him. He sort of stays strong in the first few eps we see, helps RNJR with plans, gets Pyrrha's head piece added to his shield and that moment of him, Nora, and Ren in the hotel room together, all their weapons against the wall, showing off her head piece for the first time like they're all back together? Fucking loved that scene. Anyway, then we see him training every night to the recording of Pyrrha, and y'know what they say about the definition of insanity.
But the real kicker is when Qrow comes in, when he starts saying more about the maidens, about all these things that were fairy tales. That's when Jaune really starts to get pissed off, all these adults they were supposed to trust have hidden all these things. Maybe if they told them, maybe if they knew they could have saved Pyrrha. So that's where we start getting serious angst Jaune.
Then we get to his sister's house. We see how he reacts to Oscar, slamming him against a wall, screaming at him because if only Oz had told them earlier maybe her destiny could have been different. He keeps blaming people for things that can't be changed anymore, he's got so much anger, so much rage about this.
There's also that moment he happens upon Pyrrha's statue, talks with her mom(or sister? I forget) then Ren and Nora round the corner and something clicks.
But nothings easy, because Then there's Haven. Cider's there, the person who killed Pyrrha and he lets that anger take over, he's sloppy, isn't thinking. Cider's the bad guy though, decides she could torture him just a bit more, stabs Weiss with that lance. It's like a repeat of beacon all over again and he can't. He can't handle doing that again. His desperation unlocks his semblance, saves Weiss.
There's more but like that's the gist, he accepts he can't change the past, but he can help now, he can keep his friends alive. (Well. Mostly. Rip penny)
Then we finally get v7-v8 and he gets his haircut (which I always liked better than the other one fight me)he's more at peace with himself, becomes that goofy dude again, but different. He's cracking good natured jokes, coming up with plans and just feels better about himself.
But then he watches one by one as his friends fall into, what he thinks is death, has to kill one of his friends (who's already died at the hands of his dead girlfriend so like at least they have that in common) and then he falls. That boy is going to be real fucked up during v9 and he's going to go backwards, that's a given, but I hope it's in a way that's... I dunno, he doesn't turn into a hated character again.
Anyway it's 2am there's more and I'm bad with words and rambled but like. Yeah.

That lighting really makes the 'garter' flaps & scarf + gloves pop. Way to fill in one gap V7's pace necessitated.
Thank you! This was in a hotel lobby taking a break for the RTX con floor in some amazing air con! The lighting and decor made for a cool setting!

When I first entered the RWBY fandom properly a little under a year ago, I, like many others, disliked Ironwood because he was a "dictator" and other such nonsense, but then I stepped back and looked at the bigger picture and realized, what the hell was he supposed to do? Like, Salem, the immortal über witch with a hateboner for the entire world was RIGHT THERE. And that was the moment I realized Ironwood had always been a good guy, no matter what the writers said. Signed A Thought Anon.
Hey anon!
I’m glad you where able to take a step back and just in general see the bugger picture. It’s so easy to get sucked into something not realize how bad it is because you love the thing and you just cannot accept something is wrong with it. It actually took discovering these bills but that happened with James for the rose tinted glasses to come off and for me to really see how fucked up some stuff was.
Back to James though, I honestly never hated the character. When I first started watching around when V4 was airing I was intrigued by the character. I wanted to see what they would do with him and how and during the Fall of Beacon I kind of fell in love. I stopped watching because I got to busy and then came back when V8 was airing and started binging again and when I hit the hug in V7 I really dove into the FNDM...and found out what happened James and I was livid. But I’ve always connected so easily to characters like James but I know not everyone feels the same and it’s okay not to like a character but to absolutely drag him down and vilify him like the fandom does is the problem. Because honestly what could he do? He hadn’t had time to prepare he had no plan and his PTSD was in high gear probably screaming at him to run before it’s to late. What else could he have done realistically?
For anyone who has been in even a remotely similar situation to James we just could not ever see him as the villain and when the show tried to make him that in volume 8 it was a slap to the face. I painfully know what it’s like to work in an environment where nothing you do is good enough, where their is always someone screeching at you about how you’re doing it wrong and that I need to do better, where no matter what I chose someone was angry and hurt and took it out on me even though their was no way I could make everyone happy. I’ve been their, I could see how beaten down and broken James was by his situation which was so much worse because he was holding literal lives in his hands and was struggle to keep people alive but it was never good enough. Even in volume 7 no one really showed him pity or compassion and that breaks a person. Theirs just only so much a person can take before they crumple under the pressure and James broke and...they blamed him. And the worst part is this isn’t the first or last story to be like this.
Time and time again we see stories where someone is completely broken. They’ve been through so much pain and suffering and they wonder is their even a point in getting better? And the story says...no and they often die alone and in pain. Recently I’ve come to the realization that...I’m depressed. My job at a hotel during the night of covid exasperated the problem and I have really really bad days. Days where I just wonder if I’m really going to be okay again and stories like James’s....it reminds me that so many people in the world say that I am to broken. That I can’t be fixed and theirs no point in trying. It hurts and I’m tired of it. I’m sick of stories telling people with disabilities and mental illness or even people just hurting that theirs no point, that their suffering only will turn them evil and that it’s their fault. That they’ll die as someone who is completely unrecognizable from who they once where. I’m just so tired and want a story where the James of the story gets saved is shown compassion and actually gets a truly happy ending. Is that really too much to ask?

431. At-LAS! Tonight’s Fair Game HC is here!
Before we start tonight’s Fair Game HC, let’s just take a nice, deep breath of relief. I don’t know about you, but for the first time in four years, I feel a calmness in a spot in my heart where only despair dwelled for years before, and that just needs to be celebrated. There’s still so much work to be done to really create a better country and world, but today was a victory for the kind of progress that there’s hope of still happening, and we should enjoy that peace of mind so we can gear up for the battles ahead.
Okay...just had to get that off my chest. Now onto the HC.
While scrolling through my ever-growing list of HCs (And puns to base HCs off of), I came across the Atlas pun that you see in the title. It got me thinking of Qrow’s unique relationship with Atlas (After all, he was a spy -- he probably visited Atlas at least once or twice before meeting Clover), and I think it would be interesting to make some HCs about that relationship as it developed! Also, this will just be Atlas Atlas, since Mantle deserves an episode of its own (I sound like WatchMojo, don’t I? Who wants a Fair Game Top 10?!).
-Since he first learned about Atlesians, Qrow’s always been able to tell an Atlesian out from a crowd. The most...Atlesian of Atlesians have that pompousness and uniquely arrogance to them, and it’s something he can catch at a glance. He also finds that even the most relaxed of Atlesians have a certain stiffness to them that they carry in everything they do (Something further reinforced with the snarkier and cooler Ace Ops). Even before Qrow knew what a Schnee was, he could tell that Schnees were to Atlas as a fish was to the sea. Because of that, before he even saw a glimpse of Atlas with his own two eyes, he knew he disliked it and probably everyone who came from it.
-Qrow visited Atlas three times before V7 and hated it more and more with each passing trip. The first trip had him there for two days, trying to track down some of Salem’s goons. The second trip was with Oz so they could get a better handle on the new headmaster of Atlas Academy’s personality (Ironwood). The third was a private update between Qrow and Ironwood regarding disclosing the whereabouts of various people of interest in their war against Salem. Because Qrow only met Clover in V7, but Qrow still likely met with James during at least one trip to Atlas, Qrow, Oz, and James met for meals and security briefings in the Academy privately. For Qrow’s money, they were the only tolerable parts of his stays there.
-While the circumstances for Qrow’s visit changed all three times, the midery of visiting Altas still remained. The hotels and restaurants were always too expensive, it was cold, the city was too chrome-y -- the list went on for Qrow, and it was all he could do not to keep counting down the seconds until he could leave (He settled on hours -- something had to keep him sane).
-While the group is in Atlas, Clover shows Qrow some of the town’s better features -- cheaper places to eat, nice parks to visit for fresh air (This is before he knows that Qrow can become a bird on command and get all the fresh air he wants), decent sources of public transportation. Doing so helps Qrow and Clover bond more, provides unintentional circumstances for Qrow to get Clover to question more toxic things about Atlas, and gives Qrow a new perspective on Atlas and what makes the city tick. By the time he leaves Atlas, Qrow still dislikes the city more than he likes it, but even he admits that it has some charms (Even though his favorite one who lives in the form of a pretty sweet man is about to take a lifelong trip across Remnant with him and be a constant source of love and joy in his life).

hello again! i sent that last ask, and i think you just wrote a story! i liked how everything worked out and the roles that the characters continue to play in each other's lives. it got me thinking of more questions that mainly involve the romance itself. when did they start dating, who made the first move, who proposed, how did Ghira and Kali react to meeting Weiss, how many kids do they have, and anything else you can think of. i hope this isn't too much trouble!
Not at all ! Honestly, I’ve been spending waaayyyyy too much time thinking about all this so it’s nice to see that someone is interested in hearing more x)
(putting my answer under a read more though because it’s HUGE)
For when they start dating, it kinda depends if I want to stay really canon compliant or if I want to have Weiss and Blake start dating earlier. I can stay canon compliant by having Blake and Yang grow apart at the end of the war, each pursuing different goals while Blake and Weiss start spending more and more time together because of the SDC and the WF. Blake and Yang would end up agreeing that the war changed them, a lot, but now that it’s over and they’re healing, they realise that they’re better off as friends rather than lovers and have an amicable break up. Pretty soon after, Blake starts to notice more things about Weiss, like how she plays with her hair when she’s thinking, how she bites her lower lip when something is bothering her, how her eyes sparkle when she sees or hears something funny, etc... and slowly she falls in love. Weiss has had a crush on Blake for years now, since their time in Beacon, but she never told anyone because she knew Blake had feelings for Yang and she just wanted her to be happy, even if it hurt her to see her with someone else. But now that Blake and Yang have broken up and Blake spends so much time with Weiss, our dear heiress’ feelings come back full force and she can’t help but hope that her feelings might be reciprocated...
One evening after a party in Vacuo both of them attended for political reasons, Blake accompanies Weiss back to her hotel room. They both had a couple drinks during the evening and are under a slight buzz, laughing more easily than usual. When they finally arrive at Weiss’ room, they stand in front of the door a moment too long, not wanting to part just yet. No one knows who leaned in first, but they soon found themselves kissing, softly at first, then more and more passionnately. They decided to stop, however, aware that it wouldn’t do them any good to go too fast, and agreed to meet in the morning for breakfast, then parted ways with one last kiss. Both of them had very pleasant dreams that night~
After that, they decided to start dating and see where it would lead them.
If I decide to be less canon compliant, I think I’d have Blake and Weiss start dating during V6 or 7, support each other through Adam’s death and all the Atlas and Schnee family bullshit going on right now. It wouldn’t change a lot of things for the story and, at the end of the war, they’d start working on rebuilding their world together, with the SDC and the WF.
Whatever the way and moment they get together though doesn’t have much influence on the rest of their story together. For example, in both cases, Kali and Ghira were delighted to know that Blake had started dating Weiss. They met her briefly at Haven and considered her a delight to talk to, very kind, respectful and polite, but with a sharp tongue when needed. Ghira is particularly fond of her since Weiss is hard to intimidate, knows what she wants and can be very determined, but also open to discussion and adjusting her stance on a multitude of matters. Kali likes to act like a mom around her (though she’s the same with Ruby and Yang too, so nothing really special there).
Winter, if Weiss and Blake started dating in Atlas, would be a bit suspicious of Blake at first. She respects her sister’s decisions and wouldn’t dare interfere in her love life, but she still has a bit of a tendency to see Weiss as her baby sister, so she’d give Blake a bit of a hard time at first, using every opportunity she gets to interrogate her on her intentions toward Weiss, why she wanted to date Weiss and all that stuff. Yang finds it hilarious but can also relate and supports Winter as a protective big sister x) If Weiss and Blake start dating after the war though, it would be a context where Winter had had time to get to learn to know Blake and saw Blake’s and Weiss’ growing feelings for each other, so she’d be a lot more supportive of the new relationship and only threaten Blake’s life if she broke Weiss’ heart as a joke (or is it ? =P).
At whatever time the girls start dating, Willow and Whitley would be rather supportive. If it’s in V7 already, they wouldn’t know right away and would only learn about the relationship after they started fixing their relationships with Weiss, so they’d be surprised, but would see how happy Blake makes Weiss, so they’d wish them the best. If it’s after the war, it would be at a point in time where Willow and Whitley are rather close to Weiss and have good relationships with her, so they’d be even more supportive and encourage her to pursue Blake in their own ways (Whitley may or may not try to play matchmaker =3)
The proposal would occur a few years after the end of the war, probably around 3 years after Weiss and Blake started dating. Remnant is getting back on its feet, the SDC is getting ever closer to the point of equality between human and Faunus Weiss wants it to reach and the Kingdoms are more and more open to listening to the White Fang and giving Faunus citizens more rights. Blake and Weiss both figure it would be the best time to get married. They had already talked about it a year or so earlier, but both agreed it would be best to wait until things settled down a bit more for both of them before they decided to throw themselves into organising a wedding. So when the time finally seems to be right, it is all a matter of who will propose first. They are both sort of expecting the other to propose sooner or later, but Weiss is still enchanted and overwhelmed by emotion when Blake goes down on one knee after a romantic date in a quiet park in Vale, near New Beacon. The wedding is held in Atlas because most of their friends and family live their or near the Kingdom and it’s easier to reach than Menagerie, but the girls make sure to incorporate elements of both traditional Atlesian and Mistralian weddings (since I headcanon that Blake, with the name Belladonna and her Japanese aesthetics, is of Mistralian descent and would follow their traditions for ceremonies like weddings). It is not a quiet or private affair since Weiss and Blake are such important public figures and their wedding is one more ray of hope toward the end of the centuries old war between humans and Faunus, but they still manage to have their dream day without having to mix too much politics into it (Ghira, Kali, Willow, Winter and Whitley make sure of that).
Their first child is born about a year after the wedding and is named Winry Belladonna-Schnee. Weiss liked the idea of continuing the tradition of names starting with a W, at least for her first child, and Blake had no objection, especially after Weiss told her that Winry was the name of her grandmother, Willow’s mother and the reason the tradition even existed. Winry is a very smart child, well-behaved when she has to be, but also mischievous at times, especially when she is with her cousin Yue or her younger sister Keyla. She looks like a carbon copy of Blake, but with Weiss’ white, straight hair and blue eyes. She has a patch of black hair cutting through the white and falling over her forehead as well as two cat ears like Blake. She’s always preferred to sport chin-length hair and mostly white clothing.
Yue, born two months before Winry, is Winter and Yang’s daughter. She looks like Yang, but with white hair and blue eyes. Most of her personality comes from Yang, though her expressions are very reminiscent of Winter’s. She grows up alongside Winry, more like sisters than cousins since they live together and are so close in age, which makes them very close friends.
Both Yue and Winry want to become Huntresses, but while Yue wants to be free and travel through the world like Yang, therefore deciding to attend New Beacon, Winry prefers to enter Atlas Academy and aim to become the next General after her Aunt Winter retires.
Keyla, born three years after Winry, has long and slightly curly black hair like Blake with two black cat ears atop her head, but her eyes are heterochromatic : right eye a warm amber and left eye a soft blue. If she wears a colored lens over her left eye, one could believe she is a younger version of Blake. She is calm and quiet most of the time, but can also be quite passionnate and eloquent when defending something that matters to her. She has always been interested in politics and hesitates between joining the White Fang or trying to become part of the Atlesian politic circle. She knows how to fight and built herself a weapon in case she ever needs to defend herself, but she doesn’t want to become a Huntress (a shame, according to all the Huntsmen and Huntresses who saw her fight). Since she was a child, she has always been close to Summer, Ruby and Penny’s daughter, but only after her twelth birthday did she realise that her feelings might go beyond friendship. Summer and her start dating around the age of 15, to the delight of everyone around them who were growing tired of their obliviousness and awkwardness.
Finally, Tanya, Weiss and Blake’s third and last child, was born four years after Keyla. She is a bright and energetic girl with long, white, slightly curly hair and blue eyes with a set of white cat ears atop her head. Much like Summer, she is sort of a “mad scientist”, a genius in her own right, though her calling rests with Dust rather than machines and programs like for Summer. When she first discovers, at age 10, the wonders of the researches on Dust, Tanya becomes passionnate and studies everything she can on the matter. She dreams of joining the BSDC’s reasearch and development team thanks to her own merit rather than her family name.
Nuts and Dolts bonus (because I mentioned their kid in all this and I think she deserves some more details) : Summer Rose, daughter of Ruby Rose and Penny Polendina, born six months after Keyla. She has long, dark-red hair, nearly black near the roots and a lighter shade of red at the tips. She wears a black bow behind her head, like her Ma (Penny) and adopted her Mom’s belief that combat skirts are the best (though she is not a fighter herself and only wears one for the style). She is a little genius when it comes to everything mechanic and is quite good at programming as well. At age 10, she is her grandfather’s best ever apprentice and at 15 years old, she starts her formal studies at Atlas Tech and Mech Academy (name is totally made up, but that’s basically where Atlas teaches all of its future scientists, no matter the discipline). At the same time, she starts dating her friend Keyla who she has always been close to, more so than to anyone else her age. Summer is a very lively girl, so much so that she’s often hard to keep up with, especially when she is very excited and uses her semblance, Teleportation, while she talks or works. It is basically in-between Ruby’s and Raven’s own semblances : Summer can’t teleport as far as Raven can, but she isn’t bound to one or multiple people, instead being able to teleport anywhere in a 2km radius. On the downside, she can’t take a lot of people with her, the best she has ever managed being five, and anything or anyone that touches her and is not the thing she is standing on will be teleported with her. Summer loves her semblance and often uses it more or less unconsciously when she’s excited, teleporting a couple of meters away when she’s switching ideas or emphasizing a point, etc. She has a lot of energy, but usually manages it quite well when she is not working, in which case she can easily get caught up in her own head and become hyper-focused on the task at hand and/or her theories and experiments. Keyla and her make for a sweet pair and get along well, even when Summer gets engrossed in her work. Keyla is usually the only one who can get Summer to rest or eat something when she’s working on something.
Elderburn bonus : I already stated that Winter and Yang had a daughter named Yue, around the same age as Winry, but they also have a son, Tai, who is also very close in age to one of his cousins, Tanya. He’s a very sweet boy, has blond hair, blue eyes and the most beautiful smile you will ever see~ He chose his name at 7 years old when he told his mothers he felt like being a boy. Both Yang and Winter were very supportive of him and offered to help him decide on a name, but he didn’t need their help to choose Tai, saying that it only makes sense for him to be called that since his grandfather was Taiyang and his mother is Yang : someone had the pick the “Tai” part of the name. (Yang laughed a lot at the way he said that, but agreed it was a good name and Tai never regretted his choice) He takes some time to figure out what he wants to do with his life because he isn’t interested in being a Huntsman, but also doesn’t have a passion like Summer or Tanya, nor an innate talent like Keyla. After he helped tutor one of his classmates in high school though, he realises he loves teaching and since he already knew he loved biology, he decided he would become a biology teacher. His students love him because his classes are lively and easy to follow and understand and he’s always really sweet.
Weapons bonus : none of the canon cast’s weapons change, but I had some ideas for the children’s weapons. Winry fights with a chokuto or a katana and her fighting style is very similar to Adam’s and Raven’s. Raven is actually the one to teach her how to best fight with her weapon, since Blake, Weiss and Winter could only teach her the basics on that matter. Yue usually fights with two gauntlets similar to Ember Celica, but she also has two sabers at her sides and is a terribly dangerous opponent when she takes them out. They are not her favoured weapon though because she prefers fighting with her fists and appreaciates that there’s less of a risk of accidentally cutting someone’s limb off with her fists rather than a blade. For those of you who played FE3H, Keyla’s weapon is very similar to the sword of the Creator : it is a sword divided in a lot of small segments that can separate themselves from each other to extend and bend the weapon, turning it into a sort of sharp, thick whip. Keyla can wrap it around limbs or pieces of furnitures and such or just extend it to hit opponents while staying out of their range. Summer fights with a halberd and, although she’s not interested in being a Huntress, she’s terribly good with it. Unlike her two sisters and eldest cousin, Tanya has no interest in fighting, therefore she only learns the basics of sword fight, adopting a rapier much like her Mother’s own weapon, with a Dust filled barrel. She also had her Mother unlock her aura and teach her how to use her Glyphs in case she needed to protect herself, but she’s not a particularly good fighter, especially compared to her sisters. Tanya doesn’t care though, seeing as she doesn’t think she’ll ever need to fight in her line of work and she’s happy with studying her Dust even if she’s not the best at using it in battle. Finally, Tai is a similar case as Tanya : he doesn’t care about fighting, actually dislikes the idea of hurting others, but learned to defend himself from Grimm and potential human attackers. Yang taught him martial arts and Tai always carries a pair of bracelets Summer designed for him that can turn into gauntlets. They don’t fire bullets like Ember Celica, but they make his hits hurt that much more and blades can sprout from between his fingers if he wants to.
In terms of Semblances, all of the kids (except Summer, of course) have the Schnee family semblance. All of them unlocked their aura and learned to use their Glyphs, including the Summoning.
