he’s with nini again, and thank god for that. playing off her energy is as effortless now as it always has been.    ❝    you wanna go cool off in the sea?    ❞    he asks with a bright grin. they're in this beautiful place, they may as well enjoy it.    ❝     it'll be a little bit of a drive, but- i don't know if the pool is our best plan    ❞    the wedding idea wasn’t exactly pre planned. they’d more or less shut their phones off and went for a drive, but… he’s already got a ring on his neens’ finger. and while they’re trying to be cautious with fans of hers at the gorgeous hotel they’ve checked into for a few days, he’s just- obsessed with his soon to be wife. her moms had agreed to come tomorrow with her lola, for their baby's wedding. they just wanted to get out of town with everything going on. college kids would probably know her if they're around- but the locals may not, or at least should leave them alone.

    ❝    agreed. what we have together is special. i know it hasn't always been easy... but skating with you really has been amazing. i'm really happy we're partners. and i'm really happy you're here.    ❞    he feels really lucky, in a lot of ways, that they ended up here. even if he feels that what's special is in more than their 'partnership' in the strictest sense, even just with skating... he's lucky to be working with her. to be building what's looking to become really great for their future careers as well as the present. ricky shrugs at her question    ❝    i can't say i know exactly what happened, but i'm pretty sure tanner had a little crush on someone back then.    ❞    he teases, smiling at her. it's not like that's even remotely the situation as of recent, but- they were kids! it really could be something that simple back then. and it's not like he and nini were particularly close at the time.    ❝    i mean that makes sense. see what happens... i'm happy with our team and the people we're working with right now too. but i'm happiest in my life right now about you- skating with you. and i can do that just as well in california. so if that's what you need... that's what we'll do.    ❞    minor correction... that is more of something included than something more true... but- he doubts she'd like to hear that she's the thing that makes him happiest in his life overall.

this isn't an easy conversation and he knows it. it's why he's kept it all in. not that that he had any way to really get the words out of his mouth back then... it was the hardest thing in his life to process. to get through. work through. he'd say get past... but some large part of him isn't truly past it. he just can't let it hold him back from what he wants- when nini's right in front of him.    ❝    i know- i know it's not fair. it's not fair for me to put this on you... but- i don't want to just... keep holding it when it's all of a sudden obvious to me that you think something happened... that didn't.    ❞    he pauses, a heavy sigh off his lips as he looks at her.    ❝    it's not fair for me to tell you- but... i still think you deserve the truth.    ❞    

she     can't     help     but     get     emotional     sometimes.     it     had     cut     so     deep,     thinking     they     had     something     and     finding     out     she     was     the     only     one     who     really     cared.     she     listens     to     what     he     says,          ❝     yeah,     it     meant     everything     to     me,     too.     but     i     don't     know     how     much     i     believe     you     when     you     hooked     up     with     sadie     within     a     week.     how     much     did     it     meant     if     you     could     just     go     off     and     do     that?     ❞     she     asks,     shrugging     her     shoulders.     ❝     you     just     hook     up     with     her     because     you     were     going     through     shit,     or     what?     ❞     she     can't     help     but     look     back     down     at     the     table,     fingers     moving     over     the     cracks     in     the     plastic.     ❝     parents     aren't     perfect     and     her     being     an     awful     one     doesn't     mean     she     doesn't     love     you,     and     it     certainly     doesn't     make     you     unlovable     just     because     she     couldn't     be     enough     of     an     adult     to     have     a     difficult     conversation     and     not     leave     like     that.     ❞          nini     had     her     own     issues     with     parents     who     didn't     want     to     be     around,     but     her     issues     with     her     father     were     not     nearly     on     the     level     of     ricky     and     his     mom.     for     starters,     her     dad     was     just     a     sperm     donor.     the     fact     that     he     was     her     moms'     friend     should     have     been     irrelevant.     she     sits     there     for     a     few     moments,     watching     as     her     fingers     tap     and     twist     against     the     table,     nervous     energy     coursing     through     her     veins.     this     wasn't     how     tonight     was     supposed     to     go.     ❝     you     are     throwing     a     lot     of     information     at     me     and     i     don't     know     how     to     process     it.     ❞     she     finally     says,     fingers     working     over     each     other,     twisting     and     worrying     as     she     thinks.

"aren't you kinda one too?" steve asks, eyebrow raising. he doesn't know if he really considers himself one, sure he'd joined the crew for the musical senior year but that'd really been about being able to spend time with robin. even if he'd managed to get some really great friends out of it. "me? i'm fine. i dunno, just a little bummed robin couldn't make the trip with me, i guess. feels weird being here without her." it's not exactly the truth, but he hopes ricky will accept that it is. he doesn't need the other worrying too much, plus he'd come to la to visit ricky and nini, he's not going to sit here and bum them out just because he's feeling a little off.
