Hello tumblr Gundam people :) !! I am desperately trying to remember how this website works so please be patient with me but in the meantime here's some art I drew for Gundam's 45th anniversary back in April!
(uploading it kinda made the image crunchy, still figuring out how to fix that...)

im literally always on my bullshit about this but it’s insane how the like. over 40-year trajectory of Gundam as a franchise gives an entire new layer of both ironic and genuine meaning to some of the older works.
like i am not kidding when I say that the fact that 0079 is referenced all the fucking time in everything and there are a bazillion little twinks with masks running around all over scifi media of all sorts makes the story have an entirely different tone.
even as close as between like, 0079 and Zeta, in 0079 the characters do not know they’re acting out an epic, a legend that will continue on and be mirrored and repeated over and over, sometimes for narrative and sometimes for money and appeal to nostalgia. amuro‘s lines, his reactions to things, aren’t written with the intent that they would be repeated ad infinitum, but when you watch it with that lens there’s this sort of Greek chorus feeling, the looming presence of the audience.
when char flies off after killing kycilia in 0079, there’s no guarantee he is ever coming back. when sayla cries at his departure the writing doesn’t know she’s going to basically fall out of the narrative moving forward and they really do never see each other again. lalah doesn’t know how persistent of a ghost she will always be. (or does she? I think that she does sometimes.) it’s fascinating to watch 0079 with one eye closed and think “what would you think of this story if you didn’t know it continued?” and then look from the other angle and think “what does the long tail of derivative works and sequels that come after this say about the story?” if I didnt know that the series went on forever and ever I would have genuinely believed for a moment that amuro was going to die in the depths of a baoa qu. and even when I do know, I still believe it for a moment until the kids start telling him directions.
the shadows of the future loom over past works and the shadows of the past over future. suletta’s headband has char’s mask and/or gundam eyes on it. we try to match the narrative silhouettes of every character to a past one, sometimes to fractional pieces. char’s ace title from the beginning was something that specifically is trapped in circular orbit. we call the RX-78-2 “grandpa.” idk. am I going somewhere?
