I think Char as a person is broken. He had an insanely traumatic childhood, then met someone he felt represented his father’s ideals (Lalah), fell in love with her and then she dies also. Then he meets Kamille, another person who represents Deikuns ideas, and he gets his brain destroyed.

(There’s also Char’s deleted affair, but I have not read it so I can’t comment on how it effects his character journey)

thinking about char's facial coverings again.... in 0079, he wears his mask the majority of the time. the are very few moments he is unmasked, the most memorable to me being after garma's death in the bar and when revealing himself as casval to kycillia. he literally unmasks from being the red comet, from being char. these are moments he lets himself be casval. in zeta, with a new identity, comes the sunglasses. they do not cover as much, and they are easier to remove, but they are still there to obscure his identity. we see him remove his sunglasses a lot more than the mask, almost casually at times. i think the difference between zeta and 0079 though, is that when the quattro bageena mask comes off, he is still not casval yet, but char again. and despite being quattro, amuro calls him char. he sees through him. many others know he's char, but they rarely call him that. then there is the assembly where he reveals that not only quattro is char, but that char is also casval. although revealing himself, he continues to wear the sunglasses for the rest of zeta. but then. char's counterattack. he is still living as char. no mask, no sunglasses, just his face. but he is still char. not casval. hmmnnghh.

I think without Kamille’s brain being broken at the end of zeta, char might have been able to reconcile his identities. But since Kamille was broken, it broke him even further.

Kamille’s idealism and attitudes were partially what convinced char to reveal himself at the government hearings, if kamille has stayed sane, I think he would have kept encouraging char in the right direction.

I still think Char would have done some fucked up shit and that he would still have dropped fifth Luna on Tibet, but I think he could have stopped there. He would have taken Axis to Sweetwater and accepted the peace agreement with the federation, and kept that peace with the reigning threat of using Axis as a weapon.
