here’s a challenge for some of you: address your failures in upholding members of our community without immediately jumping to sexualizing them and fetishizing them

objectively the funniest thing inquisition did was have every character condemn anders, with even a hawke the player explicitly said supported anders’ actions calling him partially a monster, but also let him fucking. win. the mages can be free within five years of the kirkwall chantry explosion. what the fuck?

sorry wait I have more to say. this is less abt specific trans headcanons and more abt how it feels as a trans man to have people always say that effeminate characters who hate being seen as men are transmasc. because let me tell you. it does not feel great (and I'm saying this as someone who looks like one of those kinds of characters. I know trans men who look very feminine exist. of course I know him he's me etc etc) but like. please. in addition to it being transmisogynistic to refuse to acknowledge the possibility of transfemininity. it is also says some not great things abt your ideas of what trans men are if your first thought abt a character who hates masculinity and being perceived as a man is that they must be a trans man??

ok not putting this in the tags bc I don't want to like. bring my own personal headcanon squabbles to a more serious post but it is always baffling to me that people look at a character who represses all of their own personal desires, including desires to engage with activities that are designated by society as For Women, in favor of fulfilling a masculine role that they were born into but feel limited and even harmed by (dimitri fireemblem) and a character who refuses to acknowledge that they have any personal desires and whose life is characterized by being forced into roles that they hate but feeling as though they have no choice but to stay in those roles and resisting any chances they have to exercise agency regarding their own life and literally says "unfortunately I am a man" in the most resigned voice imaginable (amuro gundam) and go. wow these are such trans men look at their tboy swag. like even if you set aside how uncomfortable they are with masculinity (which we should not do since Imo that's kind of core to their characters) these are not people who have enough self-awareness or like. the willingness to insist on what they want to be able to 1) figure out their gender and 2) transition by the time we meet them in the story

Look, I'm not fundamentally invested in the "trans headcanon" discourses, but ...
I did notice something that reads to me as odd.
It's popular to say that there's "no such thing as a 'wrong' interpretation of art", which I don't really agree with. Yes, there's a lot of flexibility within the discursive parameters set by a work of art, and some works set those parameters very broadly, and interpretation is also at its heart an act of creativity. However, if you do something like look at Jules Verne and say "He CLEARLY intended this as commentary on the first season of Steven Universe", we can comfortably call that a wrong interpretation. There are limits, some of which are easier to spot than others.
In the case of trans headcanons, I don't feel particularly strongly about them (and tend not to engage in them much myself). Yet, I have noticed a consistent trend of Tumblr looking at characters in stories who are depicted as effeminate, but not necessarily women, and also express a discomfort with masculinity, only to then go "Wow! What a relatable transmasc headcanon!"
...
Does that not seem a bit, just a tad strange?
Is there something y'all should be trying to talk out, perhaps in a medium less combative and more supportive than fandom squabbles?
Because what do you mean you relate to the characters who resent the masculinity imposed on them and want to throw it off?
That does ... not describe any of the transmasc dykes or trans men or even butch dykes I'm friends with.
Just saying.
