The 'Fate Weaver' bit was deliberate, so 10/10 for picking up on that; it's just a font choice, but it was chosen for that reason. The bracelets do have a meaning, but not quite associated with dream catchers given they're not to be appropriated the way that they are.

I'm working on a whole Thing right now as you can probably tell LMAO. The themes are all prevelant for a reason; I enjoy people coming to pick at the potential meaning behind the layers of symbolism in my work. I might not always confirm or deny due to plots but it's fun to have a little theorise either way.

ahhh ;w; yes passion absolutely drives it, i am thankful for how much there is to explore as much as i am overwhelmed by it. it's pretty funny.

i really did jsut kind of 'end up' being enamored by it all, because it by nature and its appeal to my tastes has just totally totally compelled me so much more than anything... literaly so many dimensions to both loving and being scared of it muahhahaha.

it's funny because im not even alone in this b/c gizz is the kind of band where the demographic of fans are simply known as being SUPREMELY DEDICATED and extravagant... cos the band itself is immensely extravagant. so a lot of ppl are also very very obsessed but also (mostly my peers who are a lot like me,) very overwhelmed too. my friends are always saying things like "ah i think i need to go on another gizz detox... it's too much..."

ahh sort of tangent: but that's also why lately ive been researching TheBeatles b/c of the phenomenon of beatlemania HAHAHAHA like a little bit of ironicism in it but TBH i have seen some genuinely interesting things... like scholarly articles abt why female fans in the 60s were Like That... i reallylove learning i could even say it is rather important to me, there's a lot to still delve into and understand... I ought to also pursue research for the band The Grateful Dead for more coverage of the phenomenon of "kinda niche psychrock band with superduper overzealous dedicated following" (also b/c they have a lot more similarity to gizzard especially from directly inspiring them, a whole other thing to get into tbh)...

the main thing is... the medium of Music Band has sooo many factors specific to it that can drive fans Craszyyyyy... i have found myself in the spiral but am constantlyobserving how it affects me and everyone i know. ahhh. Ahhhhh!

(Over)Analyzing the Cards in Johnny’s Joker Trick (Part 2)

Part 2 of 2. Here’s the original post for the sake of a more fleshed out explanation and for the Joker/King cards, but to keep it simple this is just for analyzing the cards used for every character in Johnny’s Joker Trick Overdrive to see if there’s any sort of symbolic or spiritual meaning that might be behind the use of that particular card. A lot of this uses cartomancy, which isn’t always as straightforward and clear-cut as something like tarot, but this is jus all in good fun

Queens

Queen of Clubs- Shared between Sol Badguy, Ramlethal Valentine, and Bridget. And, first of all, let’s be real, Sol’s was first and foremost made for the reference. Queen is about 80% of his personality, if they didn’t use a queen card I’m sure he would have come to life and burned down the office. Outside of the Jacks, Sol is the only character who has a card that doesn’t match the character’s gender. Character-wise, Sol and Ram do have a bit of an overlap, being aloof, struggling socially, and having their interests fixate on a few things, but Bridget is a bit of an outlier here. The symbolism varies a lot, but generally is appears to lean into themes of self-confidence and self-reliance, as well as change. That is something that fits all three quite well, being powerful, independent and experiencing life changes (Sol attempting to settle down, Ram discovering more about being alive, and Bridget’s transition). In the Paris pattern, the Queen of Clubs is the only one not directly modeled after a historical figure, only being a generic queenly character. This may indicate a bit more open-endedness, as all three do care about identity and who they really are. In a more literal suite motif, Sol and Bridget do both primarily fight with blunt weapons, which could be seen as a metaphorical ‘club,’ and while Ram has swords, they often remain sheathed in battle instead of revealing the sharp ends.

Queen of Diamonds- Curiously, no character appear to be assigned to this one? Perhaps it is being saved for someone in the future.

Queen of Hearts- Shared between May and Jack-O Valentine. This is one of the more commonly-seen cards in this sort of motif, likely due to its inclusion in Alice in Wonderland. Because of this, it can have some dual symbolism, being a heart card that’s associated with a cruel, loveless, domineering figure. In a more general motif, both characters fit as being associated with romance and tying a lot of their character and plotline towards love and relationships with men (Johnny and Sol, respectively). The Paris pattern has the Queen of Hearts designed after the biblical Judith, a widow who saved Jerusalem by charming and killing a general that had previously sieged her city. Both characters have attempted to take the initiative to save a group of others (May running away from home in Xrd to keep her family from getting sick and Jack-O attempting to stop I-no at the cost of herself in Strive) which may also contribute. Both also command underlings in battle, which may contribute to the overall ‘queen’ motif

Queen of Spades- Shared between Millia Rage and I-no. This card has some symbolism directly from card games, as it is often viewed as being unlucky. It’s also given such flattering names as ‘the bitch’ in seven card stud poker and is often used as the old maid card as well. Both are characters who are frequently commented on for their beauty, yet have complicated issues with relationships in different ways. As a card it also tends to lead towards level-headed intellectualism and practicality, but is often less associated with emotions than the other queen cards. Both characters are often seen as cold and distant, intelligent and capable but lonely and closed off. The Paris pattern is designed after Pallas (Athena), goddess of war strategy and wisdom. In Greek mythology, the ‘Pallas’ epithet likely referred to the goddess’ battle proficiency, as it can be translated as ‘to brandish (as a weapon’) and while it is a fighting game, the two of them narratively encounter a lot of conflict with others

Jacks

Jack of Clubs- Shared between Axl Low, Anji Mito, and Sin Kiske. Jack cards, in general, tend to have less symbolic meaning, but the Jack of Clubs tends to mention witty intellect and memory. All three characters are defined by personal memories that they treasure, though to varying degrees, and have a playful, trickster wit to them at times. It can pertain to luck and charisma that may also prove dangerous, and, at the very least, Anji does tend to his his glib words to cause trouble. On a note of consistency, Sin is of the same suite as Ky and Sol, making them collectively a three-card straight flush

Jack of Diamonds- Shared between Nagoriyuki and Giovanna. Curiously, both are newcomers to the series. This card tends to have an association with messages and messengers, which in a meta sense may refer to the newness that they bring to the game. There also seems to be repeated mention of a lack of loyalty and an unfaithful assistant, which could fit both in Giovanna’s blase attitude towards her work and Nagoriyuki’s role as an unwilling underling to Happy Chaos. 

Jack of Hearts- This card has the most people sharing it, being a four-way appearance between Faust, Goldlewis Dickinson, Testament, and Asuka R. Kreutz. This one also has a lot of heart-based themes similar to the King and Queens, often mentioning traits like kindness, good intentions, and sincerity. Though all four of them vary in many ways, their characters tend to involve sincere intentions towards others, though it might not always pan out the way they would have hoped (especially for Asuka). All four are definitely willing to show their emotions, especially when it comes to trying to bond with others, such as Faust with Ramlethal, Goldlewis with Bridget, Testament with Dizzy and Johnny, and Asuka with Raven. There is also a poetry motif with the card that depicts the Knave of Hearts as a trickster, and while all four are not necessarily trickster figures, Faust is known for his peculiarities, Goldlewis for his alien causing mischief in fights, Testament for being unpredictable in earlier games and mysteriously surviving several near-death instances, and Asuka being a mysterious and indecipherable problem-causer for most of the series. Also, in another consistency of the suites, Testament shares the heart suite with Johnny and May

Jack of Spades- Held solely by Baiken. Spade cards in general seem to veer towards more aggressive interpretations, and that definitely suits her just fine. It often mentions violence, though there is also mention of intense passion and ruthless determination, which also fit pretty nicely. It also tends to mention riskiness, either in the form of violence or unhealthy habits like drinking. Aside from the Joker and the King of Diamonds, Baiken is the only character to have a card all to herself, which may reflect the solitary nature she held onto for many years. Though, similar to the club and heart suites, she has a connection with Bedman and Delilah in the spade suite.

Fear and hunger termina bird assignments!

Starting off with Karin as a Pallas’ fishing eagle, they dominate other larger birds as competition and prey, plus I felt a raptor of some sort would be fitting for her

Daan as a grey catbird, I felt the generally unassuming aspect of them combined with the mimicking a cat’s call fit for him for Pocketcat reasons. Plus it’s just sort of his color

Abella as a Harris’ hawk, both because of their sort of general robustness plus they work together as pack hunters(the only bird of prey to do this!) and I thought that fit with her nature of sort of wanting to help out. Plus the ruddy shoulder feathers remind me of her hair

Levi as a pigeon, due to being kind of unassuming and because they’re seen as disposable, as well as their use in wartime to deliver messages, and how the species was sort of discarded in modern day

Marina as a killdeer, they’re not super sexually dimorphic for one and this is kind of just cause they’re a bird I’m fond of, their deception of pretending they’re injured to lure away predators and then flying away as well was something I considered

For Samarie, either a common loon or an anhinga, mostly going by vibes but the anhinga is also called a devil bird, and the expression of a loon being something to call someone crazy

Cedar waxwing for Henryk, just kinda looks like him. Also he seems like he’d get drunk on fermented berries

Eastern imperial eagle for Pav, for the military significance of its title and then it also just looks like him

Sociable weaver for Olivia, their giant nests and the way they protect them for how family is involved in her story, as well as tying in her being a botanist by making her a weaver bird

Choosing to believe that the Blue Mountains that surround Kaer Morhen have pallas cats living on them and while I know part of Witcher lore is that cats instinctively do not like witchers I do think it'd be cute as fuck if the pallas cats were so used to Witchers just Being Around that you'll see them wondering the halls of the keep sometimes or just sleeping in weird places to escape the snow for a bit

Want to know how do you deal with hubristic humans in your stories because this might be my opinion I find some of the punishments to be unjust like death of Niobe children and marsyas ordeal of course not suggesting you should make all the gods completely evil

My basic starting point is that hubris is a real thing (like, both because it actually was a "real" thing in Ancient Greece culturally, but the legal/cultural, real, sort of hubris is of course different from the one humans can commit against the divine in the reality of myth), much like sacrilege is a real thing. These things do have some sort of negative effect on a god (even if we're "only" talking a hit to dignity/time, but /flaps hand at Achilles - a hit to time gives one licence to do many terrible things to get one's own back).

Tiresias accidentally coming upon his mother and Athena bathing and seeing the goddess naked is automatically and immediately punished - this isn't hubris as such, but a god isn't to be seen unless they are intentionally showing themselves, and you will get punished for seeing what isn't "lawful" to be seen. The same thing happens to a son of Apollo who sees Aphrodite bathing after she's been with Adonis (and is the version where Apollo takes revenge by killing Adonis) ; it's not at all what's in the text, but for my myth-verse I do have it that Zeus' initial anger against Sisyphos/intent to punish him when he sees him flying off with Aegina is that he wasn't to be seen (and also that Sispyphos blackmails Asopos for a spring to even reveal where she was taken).

Like, the way I do it for my mythverse isn't even whether any given punishment for hubris is fair or just; hubris will be punished and the gods have a "right" to that. (Cosmos itself might punish hubris, as in the case of Ikaros, where no god acts against him.) But it also doesn't mean they can't regret it/think they went too far; Athena does in Callimachus' Bath to Pallas, and Apollo is generally represented as feeling he went too far afterwards when it comes to Marsyas.

I deal differently with humans and gods in my mythverse, basically, and that's with intent. The gods function differently from mortals, and part of it is that they're as present as they are in the mythical era.

The passive effects (AOE buffs, if you will, lol) of the gods' presence is the positive payoff for their being as present as they are (and direct, intentional favour/aid more so, even though this can of course also be dangerous). In return, that greater presence have negative payoff/drawback in the form of humans' behaviour/actions/claims will be acted upon and judged by the divine.

(So, for my story-verse, and tying into the idea that the gods withdrew after the end of the Heroic era, that is part of the effect. Humans can say/do shit post-heroic era they could not do before, because the gods are no longer entwined enough with human life to constantly and passively offer positive side-effects. They are thus not as easily "offended" (if you will), because they're doing a lot less work, and so they demand a lot less "payment".)

oohhhhh this is a really interesting one i’m actually gonna have to think about it for a bit. ty for the ask!!! apologies in advance for how long this will probably get!!!!!

hmm okay okay okay. i’d imagine an agnes who was put in pallases place would like. extremely worn down and probably a lot more jaded. i don’t think she really has the propensity towards lashing out and biting sharpness that pallas does and it’s a LOT harder for her to feign indifference, but she definitely wouldn’t be soft in any way either. her position as The Library’s top student and being used to do everything the director doesn’t want to dirty her hands with would leave her just. incredibly depressed and lethargic. and don’t get me wrong pallas is experiencing depths of self hatred uncategorizable by man, but i feel like roleswap!agnes would lack a lot of the persona they try to put on to cover it. she wouldn’t put time into the I Feel Like I’m The Worst So I Act Like I’m The Best act or effort into trying to seem cruel and controlled, mostly being very straightforward and grim in the work she does. agnes is absolutely desperate to be Seen and Loved and if anything, considering how her relationship with pallas plays out in canon, she’d be even more codependently attached to the director than they are and place her in much more of a surrogate parent role, probably bothering her a lot and wanting to spend time with her even when it’s not mission or training related. in general a roleswap!agnes would be much more likely to try and seek out connection and relationships instead of self-sabotaging every single social interaction the way pallas does. pallas tries to see everything as impersonal where agnes sees EVERYTHING as personal and that wouldn’t really change. i can definitely see her sadly spying on the regular students and classes and leaning on fiver for company in a way pallas would never do. she’d be much quieter, much more withdrawn and just incredibly weary with the world and her place in it. she’s even more aware than pallas that something is Fundamentally Wrong here, but is just so exhausted that she can’t bring herself to try and fix it. also for some reason the idea of her doing so much violent murder is funny to me like. the gawky teenage girl with the biggest, wettest, saddest brown eyes you have ever seen walks up to you and then bam. 50000000 ghosts ripping u apart limb from limb.

as for PALLAS i feel like so many of their already-existing neuroses would become greatly exasperated if they switched places with agnes and as a result somehow managed to have even LESS regular human contact than they already did before. especially in terms of their social ineptitude like. if you thought they were garbage at interacting with people before then prepare to be horrified and amazed at how roleswap!pallas, who has only interacted with two Actual Living People in their entire life, can run any and all conversations into the ground without even trying! there’s. uh. also the fact that agnes was raised Very Very fantasy-apocalypse-flavoured-catholic and i can see that kinda filling the place of The Library Cause that pallas clings to in canon. it would also make the gender thing a whole new flavour of Fucked Up And Incredibly Complicated that would play a pretty massive role in their arc that it doesn’t really in lmd proper. i do think that the whole not-having-committed-actual-murder thing would go a long way towards pallas not being as guarded, so they’d probably be a lot more unabashedly annoying and awkward and not so absolutely beaten down, but their relationship to their powers would almost be completely flipped on it’s head. they’d still be basing their entire identity and self worth off of them don’t get me wrong, expect instead of their magic being something they strive to perfect and control and being seen as prodigy roleswap!pallas would like. pull their powers out with their bare hands if they could. there’s no way with the general Atmosphere of agness upbringing combined with pallas paranoia would result in anything less then a violent repulsion towards any and all magic. and this would lead to a really interesting change of in events at the beginning of the story. because listen. agnes is a good kid but she’s also hardwired for Survival At All costs, which is what enabled her to join The Library and also do so (kinda sorta not really) of her own volition. in contrast pallas will pick a hill and die on it no matter how much it’ll damage them in the long term, so in a roleswap they’d probably have to be very literally dragged there kicking and screaming and resisting basically every step of the way, trying to deny that they see agnes as a person, much less that they’re starting to grow close to her and care about her wellbeing. which like. i didn’t think i could make that relationship any more fucked up then it already is but here we are ig.

20. something you learned this year

wow... what DID i learn... well what immediately comes to mind is very big things like what finally starting therapy was like and learning things aboutMYSELF but well. that is a given... there are more fun things to learn about like my newfound wikipedia reading pastime on electrical socket page. i dont know enough about electronics yet and i want to learn more! i also learned about about formula one, like a random day this year i decided to watch a bunch of videos...that was funny.

11. something you want to do again next year

go see the powerlines next to my house. go to concerts with my friends. sell things to people at gizzard concerts. draw pictures for friends. Perhaps.

my renfield HC is that he needs a weighed blanket to sleep but they dont have those in the ward so he just asks for two extra blankets and grumps all night long...

he also is very into fantasy stories on the vein of the vampyre (duh) and since the ward is implied to be like, one of those expensive ones rich families dump their "weird" family members in, they let him take a few, only a few, to his room. he has had most of them taken away through the years but like theyre heavily anotated on pen and his favorite pages have commentary scrawled all over the margins sometimes its so disorganized he has to turn the page all around to re-read it all. he also draws bugs on the margins, and uses the emptier pages to write memos on them but then forgets and later he's reading and goes... ok why did i write this shit.

also piggybacking on my hc that it was his rich family who admitted him in the ward against his wishes when he started getting worse- at first he missed them but eventually he has come to realize they were pretty shitty people, in retrospect, so he only accepts visits from his younger siblings and nephews, though they dont come super often.

i think his favorite animals are the moth and the pallas cat because yeah . yeah they have renfield energies.
