Happy the anime onlys getting introduced to Kenjaku just in time for October. He is a funky little brain villain with a wild personality piloting a body like an EVA.
Oh, me? Wanting to write something with a body snatchers theme for October? Well...
#Kenjaku#jjk x reader#He is a mad scientist and a body snatcher#Two classic horror movie tropes#And I am just a weak monster fucker and horror enthusiast#Also seen people say that the liquid not being blood makes it less gross. Buddy no#I think the blood would make the body seem more alive or human. That thing is just an EVA for kenjaku and that makes it feel more like it

My favourite Spooky things to enjoy on Halloween!!
Tought I would make a little list of spooky things to read, listen and watch for the big day!:D
I am pretty varried in scary scale but I tend to stay away from jumpscare! And I will try to not recommend the classic like "Over the garden wall" (1000/10 requiered halloween watch) and the classic movies like "beetlejuice" and " Hocus Pocus" since you guys probably know them well.:) Here goes! -------------------MOVIES-----------------------------
John Carpenter " The Fog"

(Classic old movie, 3.5/5 spooks, old practical horror effect, mood is 10/10 with bonus for having a lighthouse) 2. The Cat people (1942)
(very old movie, and has some old tropes but great tension in some scenes and has that feeling there is a monster about to pop out at any moment without the jumpscare. 2/5 spooky)
3. The Others (2001)

(SPOOKY! One of the first scary movies I watch. still get me. Love it. 5/5 spooky for someone like me.)
------------PODCAST--------------------------
13 Days of Halloween (Season 2 and 3 ESPECIALLY)

(Fantastic ambiance, amazing voice actors cast. Season 2 is in a small seaside town and very Lovecraftian + lighthouse, Season 3 is countryside great depression feel. Both fantastic. 5/5 spookies)
2. Old gods of Appalachia
(one of my favourite podcast. if you like the magnus archive, you will like this! one of the best narrators in the world of podcasting. 4/5 spookies)
3. Ghost Story Podcast

(Not really scary but an interesting investigation into familly history and probable haunt. Just a touch spooky. 1/5) ---------------BOOKS and MANGAS----------------
The twisted ones by T. Kingfisher

(Maybe because I grew up in the countryside with a house similar to that one on my street, it gets me. 5/5 spookies)
2. Even Monsters Like Fairytale

(Kinda villainess manga, kinda twisted fairytale, I highly rec this one! 1/5 spookies)
3. Shadow house
(I would rec reading the manga more than the anime, if only because the art get that mood even better in black and white and Somato is amazing! 3/5 spookies)
4. A guest in the house by Emily Carroll

(Uncanny and such an atmostphere! Emily Carroll is, as always, a master in scary stories! 5/5 spookies!)
5. Anything by Algernon Blackwood

(Old school gothic and short ghosts stories. perfect for your dark academia and victorian haunts feels! You can find a lot in free audiobook form too on youtube and spotify! 3/5 SPOOKIES) ---------------GAMES--------------
Little goody two shoes

(horror pixel art with the dark german fairytale look and yuri? yes please! 3/5 spookies!) 2. The return of the Obra Dinn

(Ghost ship, solving crimes, nautical spooks and amazing atmosphere. 3/5 spookies) 3. Emio, The smiling man
(Investigation game with amazing graphic and live 2d-animations! a touch of the supernatural. 3/5 spookies!) 4. Paranormasight

(Seriously one of the best supernatural games I ever played. can be done in 1 or 2 days, its funny, scary and amazing. 5/5 spookies)
And that concludes thjis little list! I could add even more and Might as I think of some!
#I tried to stay away from classic recommendations!#and for those like me who cant do jumpscare#halloween#spooky season#spooky recs#scary recommendation

☆Rae's October Fics☆
October is just around the corner! Ah, I'm so excited, I'm serious when I say it's my favorite time of the year. I'll be posting a few kinktober fics, some spooky fics, and a couple that are a mix of both. I can't promise what dates they'll drop, but I will tease the concepts/tropes below! (Fair warning, this may bleed into November, and fics may be removed or added)
Spookfest
☆Blood Bag (DC vs. Vampires AU)
The Vampire King won, he turned his family into vampires, took over the world. So where does that leave you? In a castle, as Red Hoods personal supply of blood.
☆The Blood Stench | Zombie Apocalypse AU Part Two
Jason's ability to blend in as a zombie comes as a surprise, but a useful one. He's settling into his new life, the fact that you want to be around him, when a group hostile survivors takes you. He's going to show them exactly what someone who reeks like death can do.
☆Werewolf!Jason x Vampire!Reader
Gotham is cursed. No, really, some magic user put a curse on Gotham. Civilians, rouges, and heroes alike are running around as monsters, and a familiar looking werewolf saves you from what could have been a dangerous encounter.
Kinktober
☆Monster-Fucking feat. Witch!Reader x Demon!Jason
Your coven warned you about using the ancient ritual to summon a familiar, but the spell said it would deliver your perfect match, a part of your soul. Unfortunately, or maybe not, the cat or raven you were expecting doesn’t appear at all. (He has a tail, it's relevant)
☆Ribbons + Being Recorded
There's something about being able to save how pretty you look on his phone that Jason loves. Especially if it includes the sound of your voice. And the ribbons in his color tied around your wrists.
☆Hate Sex + Sex Pollen ft. AK!Red Hood
There's a limited number of vigilantes in Gotham. So no matter your, admittedly complicated, feelings on Jason, if Ivy's plants are being trafficked throughout the city, you owe it to her to work together and stop it. The problem is, it's not just plants she left behind.
☆Predator/Prey Slasher/Masked Killer AU
Based on all the classic horror movies. There's a serial killer in Gotham, granted there's a lot of them, but this one is different. He wears a mask, only is known as Red Hood and leaves the police stumped. Your boyfriend tells you not to worry, and you don't, until you come home early to see him wearing the mask that's been all over the news.
☆Threesome + Marking ft. Roy Harper
You and your roommates have an agreement. It's great, at first, but you're starting to have a hard time denying the feelings growing in your heart for both of them. They only make it harder every time they leave your skin covered in signs of your time together. You clearly haven't caught on to the way their eyes always seem to track the marks.
☆Bonus fic: Dacryphilia
There's something special about seeing you cry

slime video analysed thru horror with a queer pov
kay it gets its own post because im stil aaa bout it
This is just what I remember/was able to brush up on, since I studied this in 2019, so if anything is outdated I apologise, feel free to correct me, I love to learn!!
also I realized it has all become a lil rambly as I couldn’t contain my excitement soz
So this is my essay on the parallels of queerness in the horror genre and how DanAndPhilCRAFTS - Slime (2024) could be analysed in this light, especially given the creators’ personal history with the topic.
Among the classic tropes of the horror genre, is the topic of losing ones innocence.
Most emphasised is the loss of ones virginity, as a synonym for the innocence, although the innocence as such has many forms. As mentioned in Scream (1996), you may not survive if you have sex, if you drink/do drugs, or if you claim to “be right back” or in other ways investigate to satisfy your own curiosity.
The parallels to the christian church and societal norms are already obvious. If you deviate from the path of purity, it will lead to death and suffering. The only way to survive the night, is to stay pure. Do not be tempted by mere curiosities, for they will be the death of you, essentially.
In the same light, Baphomet is most often portrayed with characteristics from both the male and female human anatomy, and can be used as a metaphor for the inherent evil of gender expressions beyond the societal norm.
In the same light, monsters in various movies are often shown with a deviance in gender and/or sexuality. This role of ‘sexual outsider’ has, for years, been a symbolism that queer people have connected with. The has only further skewed the ‘stay pure’ narrative, as it brings on an ambience of kill or be killed. An either/or of sorts. But it has also made monsters and villains walk the line between sexy and terrifying, which naturally leads people to be enticed. We are sexual creatures afterall.
Often the monsters have an aura of masculine energy, as they make people cower, and the stereotypical jocks abandon their hardcore exterior. This, on one hand birthed the “the boyfriend is the killer” trope, but it also gave way for diving into morality, how many crimes can a villain get away with, as long as the character resonates with the audience.
This is demonstrated in Jennifers Body (2009) which was, at first, marketed to the male audience, making the monster Jennifer an attractive young woman, essentially getting the film marked as “Twilight for boys” by film critic Robert Ebert.
The ratings, however, were lackluster and claimed the movie was neither funny nor scary and thus was unsuccessful. Jennifer wasn’t “as hot as you’d hope she’d be” and essentially the “lesbians-for-the-male-gaze” marketing to boys 17+ failed.
However, many women and young girls between 17-25 saw the character of Jennifer as empowering and resonated with the film. My theory is that the men did not like being the victim, being killed my something that they are supposed to be worse than. But the women saw a strength in the conflict between what is essentially two sides of the same existence - on one hand the rage of the injustice and gender inequality, and on the other hand Needy, who follows every character trope connected to the “last girl standing.” Except even she is tainted in the end, killing Jennifer and losing her innocence. (more talk about innocence, murder/virginity bla bla bla, okay but this essay aint about that)
All this plays a role in how the queerness of DanAndPhilCRAFTS - slime (2024) can be interpreted. Throughout all four installments of the narrative, Dan is seen being guided by Phil and scolded when he doesn’t do it right. Phil seems not at all surprised when Dans glitter face turns satanic, and by the third video, Phil hands the control over as he gives himself away.
Essentially, the indoctrination of Dans role in Phils devotion is cult-like. Cults are often hidden behind a facade of “found family” before the true behind-the-scenes terror is revealed. Dan is evidently comfortable in letting a more experienced person guide the way, despite his own hesitance. He knows that he cant do this halfway.
also the idea of Phil rising from the dead, during Easter… Jesus Christ, where would we even begin (lol)
But beyond that symbolism, It is the hesitance in Dans nature that seems to point to the “purity being tainted” horror trope. Phils devotion to Him is evident, but Dan seems more so to be devoted to Phil. A follower. Believing whatever Phil believes to be true. A Billy and Stu, Scream situation, if you will. The subtext of two lovers and the blurred lines of love and death, which has been analysed and discussed a whole while by smarter people than me.
Dans hesitance to follow Phil guiding him to the other (queer) side. The penetrative stab and the menacing disarray of emotions on Dans face afterwards. This was anything but a selfish act, but he gave into the curiosity, he is not the last survivor, he has joined Him. This ritual was giving into love, without trying to contain, rationalise, or diminish any part of it.
(Kind of how like dan, selfproclaimidly, would still be a ‘Daniel in denial’ if Phil hadn’t come into his life, because Phil ‘led him astray’ but he’s very okay with it and he has embraced it, and he’s happier giving in instead of fighting it?? Too far??)

This is a three-way poll. Only one of these women will continue to the next round of the bracket.
Propaganda
Deborah Kerr (Bonjour Tristesse, An Affair to Remember, The King and I)— For several decades she held the record for most Oscar nominations without a win (6 in total), and she was a prolific leading lady throughout the 40s and 50s. She's best known today for the romance An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant, and as the governess in The King and I. Many people have this erroneous perception of her as extremely prim, proper, and virginal, but this could not be further from the truth. When she first came to Hollywood under MGM she was typecast into boring decorative roles, but broke sexual boundaries for herself and Hollywood generally in From Here to Eternity, when she made out (horizontally!) with Burt Lancaster (on top of him!) in the famous Beach Scene. She went on to play many sexually conflicted women, a character type that would define most of her post- Eternity work. She continued to break Hays Code boundaries with Tea and Sympathy, which addresses homosexuality/homophobia head-on, and even did a topless scene in The Gypsy Moths 1969!! One of the only classic stars to do so. She deserves a more nuanced and frankly a hotter legacy than she currently has!!!
Keiko Awaji (Stray Dog, A Japanese Tragedy, When a Woman Ascends the Stairs)— Her role as Harumi— a dancer who lives with her mom and will go to incredible lengths for one nice dress— is so fucking killer. she more than holds her own against Toshiro Mifune, the incredible sense of dread and foreboding in their scenes has really stuck with me
Hazel Scott (Broadway Rhythm, Rhapsody in Blue)—ok ok let me tell you about Hazel Scott. She was a Trinidadian piano genius. By the age of 3 she could play the piano by ear. She would play jazzed-up versions of classics in nightclubs and could sing too! She appeared in five movies, and used her influence as a piano prodigy to improve Black representation in film—she turned down offensive parts, demanded equal pay, and always wore her own costumes to ensure she was portrayed as glamorous and beautiful. She was the first African-American woman to host her own television show, The Hazel Scott Show. She stood up for civil rights and was an overall icon! If you want to watch her being a genius, here she is playing two pianos at once. And here's this one that shows off her consummate glamor! [videos beneath the cut]
This is round 4 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Deborah Kerr:

I think she was one of my first crushes before I realised I was bi in The King and I when I watched it as a kid honestly. The kissing scene in From Here to Eternity is iconic for a reason. Actually tried to learn the accents for the characters she was playing if they weren't English which is more than pretty much anyone else was doing then. Played very restrained characters who frequently seemed to be desperate not to be so restrained. Did horror movies without venturing into hagsploitation tropes. Gave Marni Nixon the credit she deserved for her share of the singing in The King and I.
Anne Larsen is a peak late 1950s bisexual with big MILF energy. Have you seen the behind the scenes pics of her wearing a suit?? Have you????? Vote Deb as Anne Larsen.

Nominated for an Oscar six (6) times and never won, but besides her having actual talent (hot), and besides her looking Like That (very hot, also beautiful), she was always playing women who are, like, crazy repressed. Which makes it fun and easy for me to read these characters as queer. Icon!!!! You know what's hot? Playing ambiguously gay in vintage Hollywood.

Her face and talent and body, yes, ofc, duh. But also!!! Her HANDS!!!! I may be but a simple lesbian, but she is the best hactor (hand actor) that ever lived and that's HOT! For propriety's sake I feel I must redact a large portion of my commentary on this subject. Anyway. She's hot in her most famous roles (mentioned above), and also some of her sexiest hacting is on display in An Affair to Remember (her hand on the bannister when Cary Grant kisses her off-screen??? HELLO???), Tea and Sympathy (when she's trying to persuade Tom not to go out and she keeps flexing her hands like she wants to reach out to him but can't??? ALLY BEHAVIOR! WE STAN!), and The Innocents (which opens and closes with extended shots of her hands bc director Jack Clayton was also an ally and he did that for ME). Much of her appeal also lies in the fact that she often played deeply repressed characters and you know what's hot? When those uptight characters finally unravel. It's sexy. It's cathartic. It's erotic. Plus, she's beautiful to look at in both black & white and technicolor, and the more of her films you see, the more you can't help but fall in love!

Literally is in thee most famously sexy scene of all time (or maybe just during the hays code era which is what we're talking about HELLO), which is the beach scene with Burt Lancaster in from here to eternity. To quote a tumblr post of a screen capture of a tweet of a video of joy behar on the view: "y'know, there used to be movies where they were kissing on the beach... From Here to Eternity. They're kissing-- Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr are Kissing on the Beach and then the WAVES crash!! You know exactly what they did!"
She might have a reputation of being chaste and virginal or whatever, but we all know it's the quiet ones who are certifiable FREAKS

Keiko Awaji:

today's thoughts before passing out: the demon blood plot reading as a metaphoric fear of miscegenation, a result of classic Western tropes told through a Horror framework.
demon blood is a boundary crossing substance, invasive and transformative. Sam violated in the crib functions on one level as a rape metaphor, but its done so through demonic blood coming in to dilute his human blood. the violation then, comes in as a literal theft of identity. his body becomes the literal battleground between two forces - the domestic world of his family vs. the invading, monstrous outsider. Azazel snatches and preys on civilised children from the crib as a means of recruiting them to his tribe army, literally corrupting them on a bodily level, claiming them from their blood families as his own. and the more demon blood Sam drinks, the less 'human' he becomes (the less of his family's blood in him). Dean's anger over Ruby also ties into Sam's sexual relationship with her, of which the blood drinking is a component. the blood drinking is especially transgressive because it echoes deep-rooted settler colonial anxieties, expressed through the language of pop culture - fears over losing one's blood, family, and identity to a savage Other.
(4.04)
(4.21)
what got me started on this line of thinking was a recent rewatch of John Ford's The Searchers (1956), a movie so ingrained in the modern American cultural mythos that nearly every first year cinema studies course makes it required viewing lmao. it's a subversive Western, concerned with exploring the porous boundary dividing white settler communities from Native American communities, the defining line between the 'civilised'/'uncivilised', the colonial subject and the savage. it was released during an era when America was grappling with undoing laws around racial segregation, and reflects those anxieties through classic American mythology.
so. Sam is a modern interpretation of Martin and Debbie from that movie, and Dean is a modern variant on its leading anti-hero, Ethan Edwards (rather John is our initial Ethan figure, but we spend most of the show with Dean, who takes on his mantle). just to emphasise the connection between the show and this movie - Star Wars heavily references it, and Kripke's always been explicit about this show's two leads as Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. well, i'd argue this show definitely owes more to The Searchers than Star Wars does!
Martin is Ethan's adoptive nephew of partial Cherokee descent, made an outsider to his family, by his uncle, at the film's outset due to his blood. he joins his uncle on his revenge mission after a Comanche tribe destroys their home and steals his adoptive sister - Debbie. this mission becomes his coming-of-age journey into rugged frontier manhood, as much as it is his path towards integration into white, 'civilised' society.
the protagonist of the film is Ethan, a soldier who gets consumed by his seven year long, bloody, vengeance-fuelled quest to recover his niece. when he finds Debbie, however, to his dismay he discovers she's no longer the 'pure' innocent he remembers. upon finding out that she's married to the tribe's chief - he literally disowns her as his blood kin, and at one point, even tries to kill her. Martin becomes the one to save her from his uncle's shot and the one to convince her to return home. he later convinces Ethan to recommit to rescuing her, and he ends up doing so.

(15.17 - Sam over s4 functions as a Debbie figure, but Jack also takes up her role. Dean disowns him as Ethan disowns his niece)
over the movie, we see Ethan descend into ever increasing violence and 'wildness', grown closer to his enemy after years spent on the frontier, hunting them down. Martin gets to go home, his civilising mission completed as he marries into a white family. Ethan though, stands at the threshold in the iconic concluding shot below. he's been transformed by frontier violence to the point he no longer belongs to the domestic, civilised world. he wanders back out into the desert, alone.
(1.14)
anyways. Supernatural owes so much of its dna to the classic Western, and to this movie in particular. what The Searchers was to collective white American anxieties over desegregation in the late 50s, this show was to collective white American anxieties over multiculturalism at the new millenium, in the wake of 9/11. Sam's demon blood is a critical defining line between him and his brother, as Martin's mixed race status is the defining line between him and his uncle. 'monstrosity' on this show metaphorically stands in for savagery; one brother gets thrown out onto the frontier, a journey towards 'taming' his own nature. and another brother drifts further and further away from civilised society the longer he spends fighting at the frontier, protecting civilisation from its monsters. 'blood don't end with family' comes to a screeching halt when it addresses the prospect of monstrosity. what is demon blood standing in for on this show? what does a monster represent, truly? who gets to step over the threshold into civilised society, and what is the price of that acceptance?
#spn#spn meta#incoherently kicking the hornet's nest!!! and now time to pass out#would love to see more analysis of the show through its references/tropes/archetypes tbh#all fifteen seasons of supernatural: john ford's the searchers (1956)#this show's brilliance lies in its marriage of cultural anxieties across genres -> classic westerns + modern (80s-90s) horror#“racism is the curse of the american soul”#my meta#supernatural is a modern western#j.txt

Hello! Can I request a fake dating fic with Clark with coworker and best friend reader please :)
Pairing: Superman(Clark Kent) x Reader Rating || Genres || Warnings: T. Romance. A/N: Oooooooooooo I ADORE the fake-dating trope! Meep! Also vote for the second part here.
"Your mother thinks what?!"
Several nosy reporters poked their heads up from where they had been working on their latest scoops. Only to be greeted with the sight of you dragging Clark by the sleeve of his shirt and into the empty conference room. To anyone new it would've been an unusual sight, seeing someone as tall as Clark Kent be dragged by someone at least a head or two shorter them him. But the workers at the Daily Planet were used to seeing the two of you together.
Once inside the conference room and assured that no one else would hear you or Clark, you turned you attention back to him
"Keep your voice down!" You huffed, before giving a small shrug. "And its not a big deal."
"A big deal?! Y/n, you lied to your mother." The corner of your mouth twitched and you were unable to meet the disappointed look in his blue eyes. "I didn't lie to her per se."
Clark rolled his eyes, arms crossing over his broad chest. "Well you didn't correct her either."
Pouting slightly you threw him an accusing look. "Yeah well, its your fault isn't it? You shouldn't have gotten me such an expensive gift for my birthday! She just saw the necklace and when she asked who gave it to me I said you did, and then she just assumed we were going out and I.......I didn't correct her." Your voice trailed off, seeing that you weren't really going to win this argument.
At the mention of the necklace, your fingers had unconsciously lifted to run the tips of them along the piece of jewelry that you had taken to wearing since Clark gave it to you.
It was truly a gorgeous piece, and now counted as one of your most prized possessions. Not because it was probably expensive, but because Clark had been the one to give it to you. His gaze dropped to your throat as well, where the necklace lay just between your collarbone.
"And now she has invited us over this weekend to meet me?" Clark confirmed, finally meeting your eyes once more to which you gave a nod. "Well she wants to meet the new beau, her words not mine." You were quick to clarify, your eyes widening in horror at the word that had slipped you. "So you're suggesting we spend an entire evening together, and pretend that we're dating?"
You gave a little flinch. "Sounds cliché, I know." Clark only shook his head. "I should really stop you from watching those rom-coms you're always crying over." He grumbled under his breath. "Too many romantic ideas in your head makes for these kinds of situations."
You bristled. "Hey! I'll have you know I watch classical rom-coms, none of those new hallmark rom-coms that makes you wanna puke." You had a particular taste when it came to the movies you watched, although your best friend's taste was significantly different then yours.
Yes.
Best friends.
You and Clark were best friends who were now being roped into fake-dating. Why? Because you were too much of a coward to come out and tell the truth to your over-bearing hard to please mother.
This would either go really good or turn into a complete disaster.
————————–
A few hours later you and Clark were both at his apartment, sharing the food you had ordered to bribe him further.
"Well I suppose we should start setting the rules and such? At least thats what they do in movies." You suggested, once the Kryptonian had managed to go through half the food. A well-fed Clark was a happy Clark, you had learned long ago.
"Remind me again why am I doing this for you?" He asked, digging into your takeout container to steal one your chicken pieces. You smacked his chopsticks away with your own, pulling the container out of his reach.
"Because I'm buying you dinner here, and also because you love me." You stated in such a off-handed manner as you stuffed your mouth with chicken that you didn't even notice how Clark stiffened at your side at your words.
Polishing off the food you began to speak. "They'll be coming in a couple days, so dress nice, and appropriately. Make sure to wear your coat. I know you have an internal heater given that you're freakin' E.T." You gestured to his overall physique, to which he rolled his eyes at you. "But us puny humans get cold a lot, so coat, hat, and gloves."
"I know, Y/n." He said in an exasperated tone, to which you grinned. You loved messing with him, acting all delicate and weak just to tease him about his strength and powers. It was all in good fun though.
"She already knows how we met, and will probably ask really nosy questions. Dad will just sit there quietly and let her do all the talking. Besides he already likes you so you don't have to win him over." Clark looked up from where he had been pouring himself a drink.
"He does?" You smiled at him. His blue eyes were so hopeful and the smile he wore was so adorable. Did it really matter to him that your parents liked him?
You shrugged. "Well yeah. I mean I did tell him how you helped me out with the stalker situation, without telling him that you were Superman, and he was really grateful. Said it was good that I had someone sensible looking out for me." You poked your tongue out at the triumphant look in his eyes. "I agree with your father, between the two of us one of us should be the sensible one."
Raising an eyebrow at him you leaned towards him, arms wrapped around your legs which you had pulled up on the couch. Your eyes narrowed. "Remind me which one of us flies around wearing a cape and goes around actually looking for trouble?"
Clark gave a smug smile, leaning back against the couch and resting the back of his head on his forearm. "At least I can handle trouble. If I didn't, I couldn't have handled you all these years now could I?"
You scoffed, though you were unable to fight off the smirk that pulled at your lips. "Oh please. You? Handle me? I'd like to see you try."
"Is that an invitation?"
"Do you honestly need one Kent?"
"I am a gentleman Y/L/N. Of course I do."
"Alright fine! If you pull off convincing my mother we're dating, I'll let you handle me however you want."
Translation: You would do whatever he asked you to do.
"And if I loose, I'll take you up to the Watch Tower again."
"Sounds good! I'm due for a gossip session with Wally and Diana."
He stuck out his hand. "May the best of us win." You grinned, grasping his hand within your own and giving it a firm shake. "Oh, I will."
Clark only smirked. When it came to betting and competitions, you both had rather competitive streaks. Sometimes he would win, and other times you were the victor. It was always fun to one-up the other.
And you had a feeling this little competition would take the cake.
————————–
The day of the dinner arrived, and you spent the entire day pampering yourself. Just because it was a fake dinner date with your parents, with your fake boyfriend, it didn't mean you couldn't be looking nice.
Good think it was a Saturday. You were meeting your parents in the evening, and Clark would be picking you up. You had only just put the finishing touches on your makeup when the bell rang. Dashing to the door, quite the feat since you were wearing heels, you pulled it open.
The sight that greeted you had your mind short-circuiting.
Both of your office attires were semi-formal at best, and at home both of you wore the worst of your clothes. And though the image of Clark as Superman was impressive enough, nothing could beat the sight that your eyes feasted on right then.
You had told him to dress nicely, and clean up. And damn, did he clean up good. Under the winter coat he had on, he was wearing a black suit that was tailored to show off his muscular body perfectly. The shirt under the jacket was a deep red, which actually looked quite good with the black tie. You had a sudden urge to tug him forward by grabbing it, but you refrained yourself.
Little did you know, Clark was battling his own inner dilemma. Seeing you standing there in the dress you had chosen for the evening. Wearing the necklace he had gotten you. You were already beautiful on a daily basis, but right then you looked absolutely stunning.
Managing to come back to the present, you gave him a quick smile. "You clean up nice Kent. Just let me grab my coat and we'll get going." You pivoted on your heel to retrieve the garment, completely missing the way his blue eyes roamed the expanse of bare skin the dress left exposed.
Tonight would be a long night for him.
————————–
"So far so good."
You heaved a sigh as you slumped into your chair, with Clark drawing gentle circles on the back of your hand. You mother had gone to the powder room while your father stepped out for a quick smoke, under the pretense of a phone call.
"I now understand where you get your perceptive nature from." He attempted to joke, recalling to all the questions your mother had thrown at the both of you over the course of the evening.
"Yes, but unlike my mother, I know when to stop." You muttered, taking yet another sip of your wine. You had topped off long ago, and were still going strong. You needed all the alcohol you could get when it came to dealing with your mother.
"Well we're just left with dessert." He pointed out as the waiter brought their choice of desserts and left. You didn't even wait for your parents to get back, starting to dig into the chocolate tart you had ordered. Clark shot you an amused glance to which you held out a spoonful of chocolatey goodness for him to taste. He obliged, never once breaking eye contact with you. And the absolutely sinful way his mouth wrapped around the spoon had an involuntary shudder course through your entire body.
The feeling had become rather frequent since the start of the evening.
When Clark had taken your hand to help you out of the cab.
When his hand had rested against the bare skin of your exposed back.
When he had settled beside you and offered you a reassuring smile.
When you had rested a comforting hand on his thigh when your mother's words had become a little too harsh and you had defended him.
When your foot had slid to touch his under the table and had stayed there for the rest of the evening.
When you had allowed your pinkies to touch when both your hands had rested next to one another on the table.
When your eyes had met and he had recounted the time he had first met you. You had never considered the moment from his point of view, and your heart had nearly melted at what he had described.
How he had thought you were one of the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen. How he adored the way you were able to call him out on his bullshit. How he could just be himself when he was around you.
It was a pity all of this was pretend.
Or was it?
As he pulled away from the spoon, your eyes drifted to his lips where a small chocolate smudge had remained. You had no idea what compelled you to reach out and gently wipe away the thick chocolate.
Only to bring the digit to your lips and licking it clean.
You definitely weren't imagining the way Clark's eyes darkened, his light blue orbs suddenly taking on a stormy sheen that had you shivering deliciously.
This had to be an award-winning performance right?
Whatever trance the two of you were in was broken by the arrival of your mother, loudly complaining about something in the powder room that wasn't to her liking. You turned your attention back to her, with Clark a little surprised that your mother had been so oblivious to the moment you and him had been having just a moment ago.
Suddenly Clark sat up straight. You frowned at him as he quickly stood and muttering something about a phone call walked out of the restaurant, just as your father returned.
He returned moments later. "I apologize everyone, but Mr. White needs me to cover a story and I need to get going right now." He said, picking up his coat from the back of his chair as he did. From the urgency in his voice you quickly deduced that it was superhero business.
"Well now!' Your mother began indignantly to which you quickly cut her off. "The life of a reporter. Always on the clock." You said with a small laugh as you stood as well.
"Enjoy the rest of the evening everyone. And don't worry about the bill." Clark added with a charming smile. He was doing that on purpose, you knew.
He turned his attention to you and you smiled at him. "Well go do your job then and be careful." You straightened the collar of his coat. He nodded. "Yes ma'am."
Before you could say anything else he quickly leaned down, cupping the side of your face, to press a chaste kiss to your lips. It was a simple brush of the lips, and yet you felt it to the very tips of your toes.
It was over just as soon as it had begun.
"I'll see you later." He muttered as he pulled back before he was off.
You stood there for a few more seconds before slowly sliding into your seat once more.
"I suppose your taste in men has improved significantly Y/n." You heard your mother say. You glanced up at her, still a little lost from having Clark kiss you.
"He's a good one, honey." Your father said gently, giving your hand a small pat.
Just then the big screen television that had been playing some program in the background was interrupted with some breaking news. News that showed Superman and the Justice League fighting yet another threat to Earth.
And while the rest of the patrons and staff clamored to get closer to the screen your eyes never left Clark's face as the camera showed him as Superman, as he rescued civilians.
"He is." You softly spoke, more so to yourself then your parents, as you smiled at the next thought.
Seems he won your little bet this time around.

You said send you more silly prompts so can I ask… Haikyuu ships/duos/trios and how far they’d make it in a slasher movie
aaahhhhh more goofy little prompts. just so everyone knows I did get a good amount of these ideas so. they take like 980% of my available brainpower soooooooooooooooo slow and steady slow and steady
duos and trios surviving slasher films is kinda tricky because slasher films are not *horror* films or deadly films, it's specifically *slasher* which has a handful of very specific tropes which makes it almost impossible for any entire group to survive. So I have taken some liberties in the prompt in varying what specific slasher tropes they might be up against instead of simply who lives or dies, but have only picked larger groups, as i don't think duos work for "slasher" films specifically as those are typically high body count.
Daichi + Suga + Asahi: would find themselves in a very classic horror situation in which Asahi would be the first to die, and Daichi would die at the eleventh hour right before making it out, making Suga the last and only survivor.
Daichi, Suga, Asahi + Kiyoko: almost identical to the first, except Sugawara would be killed off after Asahi leaving Kiyoko to be the final girl. Daichi maintains his position as the strong+capable one, meaning he has to stick around long enough to kick down some doors, but he'd never have a chance of actually surviving. Kiyoko could survive but I actually find it likely that her inclusion in the trio would make the otherwise casual horror story into a doom and gloom one, where she'd be caught right after escaping and moving would fade to black to let you wonder what happened to her or how she died.
Hinata, Kageyama, Tsukki + Yamaguchi: I think this can go two ways, either they are all dying in a horrible slasher way, in which case the order is: Tsukki, Kageyama, Yamaguchi, Hinata (hinata cashing in his main character plot armour) OR it would be a more "fun" horror movie in which none of them die, and they "Home Alone" a dude with a machete.
Oikawa, Iwa, Makki + Mattsun: I think these assholes would find themselves more in a slower less unforgiving story. There'd probably be some kind of ancient occult shit going on and a puzzle that needed to be solved, and they'd be running around a labyrnth trying to figure out how to seal some ancient evil away by being chased by a machete man. In which case I can hyper visualize the last scene in which Oikawa is completely bloodied and screaming as the last parts of the ritual are completed right before their time is up, but I imagine that happening with the others either chained/locked away but still alive. I actually think most have a good chance of survival (either Makki or Mattsun would be kicking it, though), and the end credits would roll with some kind of voice over about nobody ever believing the evil they saw in the cabin + an end credits scene that implies the thing gets re released and is going to hunt them down for revenge.
Ushijima + Tendou + Leon + Semi + Yamagata: I think this one would go very Cabin in the Woods. Incredibly self aware of it's tropes, everything would be reversed and ironic and you'd never really have any fucking idea what was going on as they are slowly driving instead. I feel like Tendou would be the first to die, only to make a re-appearance later in a fake-out scenario (never believe someone's dead in a movie unless you see their open eyes!) and they'd probably have a really strong chance at making it out. I think Leon and Yamagata are almost guarantee to be killed off, but the story could swing two ways, either it is a kinder slasher fic in which Ushijima, Tendou + Semi (with heavy injury) manage to fight back and kill whatever it is that's chasing them, OR they come very close to it and are killed off/recaptured by whatever it was with a moral lesson of "you can't escape the rat race" vibes.
if you can't tell I don't really *like* slasher films or horror movies, specifically because I don't like pessimism, which is required in a lot of the stories where everyone dies, so I'm giving a handful of potential endings to accommodate what I understand to be objectively most likely, versus how I would write it lmao
Bokuto, Akaashi, Kuroo + Kenma: Depends on who you pick as your hero. I think in this case it would be a pretty standing pick-off, probably Kuroo, Kenma, Bokuto and then leaving Akaashi last to probably survive, but I also feel like this group would be most as risk of the "killer was secretly one of us all along!" in which case the killer is Bokuto I don't make the rules. They'd play him up as the lovable idiot but it would be a ~facade~
Atsumu + Osamu: only duo I'm putting on this list I feel like this would be more of a kidnapping situation where they're trapped somewhere isolated and have to escape. Maybe some rich fuck's private island. Anyway you can pick your poison on this one it goes either way but only one of them is getting off that island
Atsumu + Osamu + Alan + Kita: I think with this group the story would have to become less gloomy in general so I think they'd all have a decent chance of surviving. If anything, I'd say Kita would be the only one to die, but it would be framed in an ironic tragedy sort of way as the character would be presented as someone who had the most to lose anyway and still lost. Otherwise, I imagine this is more of the "torture and torment" hellscape of horror and they'd probably all have a terrible sequel that starts with them facing their villain in court or something.
Shoutout to my captain squad: Daichi, Bokuto, Ushijima, Oikawa, Kuroo + Kita: they're all dying. In the following order Kita, Bokuto, Kuroo, Daichi + Ushijima (they'd be killed at the same time), then Oikawa. This is also a movie that I would hate. I can visualize it. A wonder cast of interesting characters and it's basically torture porn. There are more interesting things to do to them in a slasher flick ;)

Have you played THEY CAME FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE ?
By Onyx Path Publishing

The era of Hays Code compliant horror movies is over. No more black & white films of screaming women with beehive hairdos and scientists in tucked in button ups fighting Shark people in bad rubber suits. It’s the age of full color movies of cool cats in bell bottom jeans and foxy mamas with Afros visiting haunted castles and coming face to face with The Devil Himself. Based off late 60’s and 70’s low budget exploitation horror movies, players are actors playing characters based off common character archetypes from the genre. The dupe who wandered into the hotel full of serial killers by coincidence. The mystic who receives cryptic visions from seeing zombies rise from the grave. The Hunter who knows how to fight a werewolf with their own hands and other classic horror movie characters are playable. With the GM as the director to this splatterfest, prepare to tackle horrors in the 70’s and even the late 1800’s as you flash back to play as your past lives in a different era of horror. Stories could crossover between the two centuries as you can learn why the vampire who owns the discotheque has sworn to kill you in revenge for what your great, great grandfather did to him. Classic movie tropes, bad one liners and movie editing magic are your arsenal in this game. Can you fight and survive the undead and damned and make a cult classic?

Having trouble finding some films to watch, especially now that it's pride month?
Well have no fear, because I have some that is recommended, whether queer or queer-coded, these are movies you should watch.
Despite being forgotten or criticize being "woke", Strange World is a underrated gem that join the list of underrated and forgotten disney films such Lightyear, Treasure Planet and Atlantis.
It has an gay main character and a diverse cast including an 3-legged dog. Inspired by classic sci-fi adventure film in the 50's and 60's, Strange World is fun adventure film about an generation of a family dealing with their own faults, also opening a door of possibilities with it's lore.
Freaky is a fun twist on the classic "Freaky Friday" trope, telling the story of a teenager who swap bodies with a serial killer, thanks to a mystical artifact.
Co-written and directed by the guy who also made Happy Death Day, Freaky delivers some gore-filled kills and feel good laughs while offering some parts of queer identity along with a gay character who proud of who he is.
The Fear Street trilogy itself not only joined the list of amazing horror films in 2021 but also an spot of queer horror.
It follows an romance of two lesbian teens in the 90's not only dealing with homophobia but also a ancient connected curse of the town of Shadyside.
Chalked with nostalgia of classic horror films like Scream, Friday the 13th and The Crucible.
Fear Street wins fans over with it's violent kills, remarkable characters, talented performances, and great and relatable queer representation.
Jennifer's Body introduced an another horror icon and bisexuality.
Megan Fox plays Jennifer Check who was possessed by a demon and targets on guys after being sacrificed by an fame-hungry band.
Tho Jennifer is not a lesbian, but the films does show that she is interested in both boys and girls, claiming she goes both ways and has some interest in her friend Needy, even kissing her too.
The cult classic not only has an amazing bisexual icon but tackles heavy themes such as assault, exploitation and the female gaze.
Bottoms is a must watch masterpiece, chaotic, brutal and gut-bursting funny, the film follows two high school friends that made a fight club to just hook up with two popular cheerleaders.
With an ridiculously unhinged final act, meet cute romance, and jokes that have you laughing your butt off. This 2000's coded movie is a a treat to start off the month.
After rewatching it again, Arlo has queer heavy themes if you think about it. Looking back, one of the film's characters, has some queer-coded hints about him.
I'm not going to spoil on the titular character, I think you should watch the film in order to get what I'm saying.
Other than that the film has an amazing soundtrack and has colorful characters as well.
Luca definitely is a queer film without a doubt. Focusing on two young sea monsters, spending an unforgettable summer in the town of Portorosso on the Italian Riviera.
It's themes of self discovery, chosen families, homophobia and acceptance.
This emotionally sweet sea-filled tale is a instant classic with a pretty much Canon couple too.
Robot Dreams also has hints of queer companionship and also is a story of loneliness, the film's out now, you definitely think you should see it.
Based off the comic in 2007, Robot Dreams is set in the 80's of New York City.
A lonely dog assemble and befriends a robot in a dialogue-less journey of friendship, love and rusted parts.
There's no surprises are a lot of clear queer-tonic themes in the films, especially among the two main characters, Robot Dreams is a perfect way to spend your summer.
Last year, Nimona was not only one final goodbye from Blue sky studios but is a part of the best films of 2023.
No surprise that the creator of the graphic novel also did Netflix's She-ra, the film is heavy on not only disability but also gender identity and transphobia.
it's a film that everyone will enjoy, thanks to it's commentary and electrifying performances by the cast, combine with pretty metal animation, Nimona is the film you should definitely watch.
🏳️🌈Happy pride month, hope all of you have a great day, and let me know on what think of these films.🏳️🌈

REVIEW: THE VICAR MAN
Okay, so, I finished @ameliahcrowley 's THE VICAR MAN. I promised to leave an Amazon review but Amazon won't let me. So in the spirit of our agreement, I'm leaving a review somewhere and figuring out Amazon later.
TLDR: The Vicar Man is good! I liked it! If you like funny historical fantasy you will probably like it!
So as you could probably guess from the title, The Vicar Man is a spoof of The Wicker Man, the classic folk horror movie. (It's mostly drawing from the Christopher Lee one, not the Nic Cage one, and thank goodness for that.) Dora's village worships a dark, eldritch god and sacrifices virgins to it for the good of the harvest. When a stranger comes to town- a nice young vicar who genuinely seems oblivious to the horrors at hand-
Dora can't just let him get thrown on the sacrificial pyre. She has to save this guy. And the easiest way to keep someone from being a virgin sacrifice is to make sure they're not a virgin anymore. Problem is, Dora's aro/ace, and moderately sex-repulsed. But a man's life's at stake. She sets off on a quest to seduce the Vicar, poking fun of many historical romance tropes along the way.
It might be more accurate to call this story an unromance novel than a fantasy novel- it follows all the conventions of a romance novel, down to the plot beats, but none of them quite wind up where you'd expect. This isn't a traditional love story- but it's not not a love story. This isn't a traditional horror story- but it's not not a horror story. If you're aro and/or ace, you like the idea of historical romance, but you're not here for the Love At First Sight Based Solely On Pantsfeelings? This book was made for you, specifically.
What it is is a comedy, and it's fast-paced and funny the whole way through. Dora's incredibly likeable- especially if you're a snarky, nerdy bluestocking, or if you've left a high-control religious group- and her inner monologue never fails to please. Norman, the titular vicar, is a sad, wet cat of a man, a poor little meow meow, adorable and kind and So Very Doomed. The relationship between the two of them - well, I shan't spoil things, but I thought it was delightful.
This book has one quality that didn't always gel with me- the language sits a bit wrong for a historical, even one that's set in the year "uh. well. there's probably a king? named George?". There's a fair bit of Tumblr dialect sprinkled through here- in particular there's a handful of jokes that revolve around 21st century feminist terms, sometimes deliberately using them for a jarring and inappropriate effect. And sometimes it hit right, but sometimes it didn't do it for me. I'm oversensitive to language, though- heck, I invented an entire goddess for one setting so I wouldn't have to use 'modern' trans language in a setting where it doesn't belong!- and it probably won't bug most people.
Overall, I really enjoyed the time I spent with THE VICAR MAN- I'd recommend it if you like funny historical fantasy, if you'd enjoy reading a sendup of Gothic romances and folk horror, or if you like the idea of an aro/ace unromance novel. I'd especially recommend it if you like The Misadventures of Sawbones and Its Menagerie- the narrator, Dora, has a very similar narrative voice. They share that 'outwardly quiet and polite, but with a constant snarky inner monologue' energy.
Strong recommend, and thanks to the author for the review copy!

What Tropes Would AOT Characters be in a Horror Movie
I'm gonna make 'AOT in a Haunted House next <3'
Eren: he is what the locals call 'the reckless or unhinged protagonist' meaning he is very much so liability to everyone involved; "everybody stay calm, everybody stay- FUCK THE KILLER'S HERE SHIT FUCK PUSSY ASS BITCH"... dead by the end
Mikasa: THE FINAL GIRL HELLO?? The badass final girl who is left standing, tries to protect everyone that she can and isn't making stupid decisions... she's obviously alive
Armin: he's obviously the strategist. "Eren shut up we're coming up with a plan... theoretically the window up there could *insert smart yapping here*"... he lives
Jean: here is your classic skeptic, trying his hardest to be a [delusional] voice of reason "there's no psycho murderer *Marco dies* alright.. there might be a psycho murderer..." he's dead by the end let's Bffr
Sasha and Connie: they're a package duo because they're the comedic relief together. They are in a constant state of joking and not taking anything seriously... "Connie did you see his outfit?" "He looked so fat, that was sooooo unflattering, Sasha"... they're both dead, like two of the first ones at that
Levi Ackerman: he is 'the veteran' as in... he is the lone survivor from a previous mass killing so he knows what to do, how to do it, etc. and is eerily calm... casually lore drops all his trauma.... he has to survive another massacre
Hange: the 'a little too obsessed with dead bodies' character... a possible candidate for who the killer may be just purely because of their intense interest in the gore... they die, proving that they aren't the killer and everyone freaks out
Erwin: the 'leader'; this is a very similar essence to Armin but Erwin takes on the task to actually direct everyone... he dies sorry
Reiner: the traitor... "I'm sorry... a sacrifice had to be made in order for me to survive" (let's be real he doesn't really wanna survive but you get the gist)... he's alive because of his betrayal
Bertholdt: the 'willing to sacrifice themself' character. He sacrifices himself for someone and this is the character death that has everyone so fucked up because he was just a sweetheart... he's obviously dead
Annie: she is 'the lethal outsider', the lone wolf, and WANTS to separate from the group... therefore she's a main suspect of who the killer could be (she isn't though)... she survives and has to prove herself to not be the killer
Historia: alright hot take? question mark? but she's the token virgin character. you think she's pathetic and she's gonna die but oh man THE PLOT ARMOR SHE HAS! (because she's a virgin) and she ends up like, almost saving Armin from death or something.
Ymir: she is the 'one with a dark past'. So this basically means like she's really only here to protect herself and Historia because of the hell she's gone through with her family and shit like that and she doesn't trust others to look out for her. They all also speculate that she could be the killer... but she ends up dying in the end

HALLOWEEN DAY 22: Non horror multi muses as horror tropes - Multi!Muse x Fem!Reader
Pairing: Non-Horror Multimuses x Fem!Reader
Warning: Mentions of hell, killing, dying, cursing nothing graphic but mentions of gore and violence.
Type: Blurb
Request: N/A
Word count: N/A
Prompt: Classic horror movie tropes for my non horror multimuse list x reader
Notes: Maybe if I’m feeling generous I might do the horror muses as a pt 2.
Harley Quinn: Possessed doll trope
You were trying to get Harley into thrifting, which she caught on pretty quickly. She started to really enjoy collecting dolls, almost of all kinds. Whatever caught her eye. “These are kinda creepy Harls” you admitted, holding the ceramic baby jester dolls in your hands. “Nonsense. They’re cuuuute! Put them back in the cart.” Before you could even get home, you noticed the car wouldn’t break when you pressed on the pedal, almost causing you to crash. You could’ve sworn the doll was sitting in the back seat staring at you through the rear view mirror. Close calls after close calls. No matter if you burned the doll, drove it to the middle of nowhere, dunked it in the lake, it always appeared in your place unharmed. The only thing you two could do, is to try to gift it to someone else.
Poison Ivy: Mad doctor trope
You followed Pamela every step of the way to watch her save the world, but for the first time in your life, you began to doubt her due to the dedication she had to save the planet. After different weather eapproaches, she decided to do what no one has attempted to before and that’s kill off the case. You start to doubt her and her methods that only grow more gruesome after the last. Would you still follow you even if it’s for a right cause?
Billy Hargrove: Final girl trope
Your group of friends went out on a road trip, your boyfriend Billy included. Drunk and ignorant, Billy and his friends picked on the stranger in the car next to you guys at the stop light. Throwing beer cans and piles of trash, the group sped off, laughing and not thinking much of it. Once you get to the dingy hotel, something doesn’t sit right with you. One by one your friends go missing, realizing it was the man who was at the stop light with an uncontrollable rage. You find each of your friends in the most gruesome death you can imagine. Billy does his best to protect you, even going as far as to sacrifice himself for you to escape, which you do, leaving you as the final girl.
Steve Harrington: Found footage
You and Steve go missing after agreeing to explore a spooky bridge near your house. You both thought the tale to be bullshit, even playing around with each other to feign a scare. You brought your camera, the only thing found as evidence that something must’ve happened. Steve and you are heard laughing and taunting the woods, in a few frames you can see four glowing eyes, then a few screams and a camera drop. Your friends go out looking for you two after a few days, only to find the camera in the bed of leaves. Would they be able to find you two in time?
Steve Rogers: Abandoned camp ruins trope
Your boyfriend tries to make a cute getaway with you, planning to take you on a trip to a campsite when he remembered you’ve never been camping. It’s a fun road trip, full of laughs and pictures, he sets everything up for you both, confident in his survival skills. It would only be for a day anyway, but as the sun starts to set, the area gets eerie. Rustling and the feeling of being watched drives you scared out of your mind, begging to go home, you find that your car cannot start. Screams and sounds of movement plague your adventure, you and Steve try your best to remain calm and wait until sunrise. What could go wrong
Bucky Barnes: The obsessed killer
No matter where you run or where you hide, you’ll always be found. Bucky tries his best to help you understand why you and what he can do to protect you. If it’s more complicated than it seems then he will just have to lose sleep, guarding you while you rest. He rather die than to let you get hurt especially over another human. He knows no one can be trusted, his only objective is to keep you safe. He will always go above and beyond for you and even try to pull favors to put this person down. Bucky is more than determined to give you a peaceful life.
Wanda Maximoff: Amusement park from hell
You think it’s a great idea to have a date at the amusement park and Wanda has never been. When you get there, it’s worn down and dingy, nothing like it was advertised. You both try to make the best of it, but when the Ferris wheel comes to a halt and you hear a bolt come loose, you both knew maybe it was better to go home. However when you look down, you see a group of clowns staring up at you two without saying a word. Your phone signals are down and there’s no one else around. Your only objective is to get the hell home and fast.
Loki Laufeyson:
Cloud Strife: Haunted Victorian house trope
When traveling from a remote village, your eyes are weary. Cloud opts to ask for help from a secluded home, he has no choice other than to carry you the rest of the way and he was strong but not invincible. He was tired too. Though you tried to convince him to follow a different path, he was stubborn. The door was open, as he peaked inside and decided to investigate for himself, you didn’t want to be left alone outside. Now you both couldn’t leave.
Sebastian Michaelis: Accidental satanic ritual trope
Upon trying to summon your beloved deceased pet, it looks like you must’ve pronounced something incorrectly. Sebastian appeared instead, menacing and taunting your own confusion, leaving you only with a choice, whether to sacrifice yourself or work out a deal with him. What would you choose?
Spencer Reid: Nightmare on Halloween trope
There’s a killer lurking on Hallows Eve and Halloween day. Spencer has kept a close eye on him, but nothing seems to solidify his hunch. He’s certain he strikes every Halloween, every three years, but the killing methods are always different. His favorite holiday soon turned to one he dreaded. The worst part? The killer seems to have a type and it meets exactly your description. This year, he started to travel around, striking on October first, another victim dropping every day, counting down to the 31st. Would he be able to catch him in time before he gets to you? Could he hide you well enough to keep you alive?
Bruce Wayne: Dead all along trope
You meet Bruce at one of his extravagant parties. The gothic manor is extremely beautiful, mesmerizing, almost as much as the eyes of the owner. He is enchanted by you, dancing the night away, drinking and talking your head off. He’s charming, rich and handsome, he’s also a homebody. As the night continues, you overhear the guests talking about how they never see the billionaire playboy outside the manor. The more time you spend with him, the more you realize they’re right. It’s not until you notice his chest doesn’t rise and fall like yours does that makes you want to ask him about it.
Jason Todd: Dragged out of hell trope
He doesn’t confide in you too much of where he came from, instead he opts to look forward into life and what it can offer. The harder he tries to turn away from his escape from the pit of hell, the more he descended into madness. When he made his escape it wasn’t just him that was set free. Demons and monsters start terrorizing the city and you two must work together to make the city a more peaceful place. You have to help him before he gets dragged back out to hell.

Aren't you tired of forced romances with no chemistry that only take away from the actually interesting plot? Don't you just want media where romance isn't portrayed as being superior and more important than (queer)platonic relationships?
Well, my exhausted aro ass is too, so here are a few tricks and wisdoms I've gathered over my years of being a-spec (which is all of them) on how to avoid romance (in media) in a very allonormative society 💚🤍🩶🖤
(this is a rec list btw. no I am not shitting on the shows that I tagged, quite the opposite)
1. Middle Grade
I get if you aren't really into that, because it is kind of annoying to be pointed to literal children's literature when all you want is a story that isn't constantly being interrupted by describing the main guy's heated eyes for the twentieth time.
However.
It is true that in middle grade, friendship is always more important than romance. Because, let's face it. Making two eleven year old characters kiss is kinda weird. So even if there is a romance, it isn't very prominent and treated more like friendship and/or a puppy crush. Plus some stories get surprisingly dark?!?!
Examples
- Howl's Moving Castle (Diana Wynne Jones), technically a romance in the end, but mostly focused on found family, shenanigans, and finding your own value
- House of Many Ways (DWJ). Yes, again. I really like her books okay? They always have something so fantastical and whimsical about them. This is my other favorite book by her and it has literally no romance at all. Plus a hmc cameo that is so fun !!
- Coraline (Neil Gaiman). Maybe this is cheating because I never actually read it. However. a) the movie traumatized me. b) Wybie was added to the movie, he doesn't exist in the book, so if "power of friendship" isn't your thing this will be great. Probably vibes over plot.
Flyte (Angie Sage). Technically this is the second book, but I never read the first one and still understood everything. Once again, no romance at all. A fun read, which can get surprisingly dark at times.
2. Short Story Collections
Once again, I get it if it isn't your thing. Short stories are - as the name reveals - short. Which means: no worldbuilding, very limited narrator, open ending, no time to really get attached to characters, etc.
But.
The cool thing about collections, is that they always have a certain theme. And as long as the theme is not romance, romance will not be the focus. Even if there is a romantic relationship, it will be used to explore this theme since there simply isn't time for anything else.
Examples:
Life Ceremony (Sayaka Murata) This is the book that actually made me figure out: hey! I do actually like short stories !! The main theme is basically about being different and it plays a lot with body horror and the perception of your own body in contrast with how society sees it. There is even a story about two women who platonically live together and raised multiple children!
Canterbury Classics: Classic Tales of Horror (introduction by Ernest Hilbert). As the name suggests, this is a collection of horror short stories, featuring well-known authors such as Bram Stoker, Edgar Allan Poe or Charlotte Perkins Gilman. As these are classic old tales, the language is a bit complicated at times and you can read them for free on Gutenberg. However, the book is very very pretty and the introduction is very interesting (Origins of the genre, specific tropes and monsters, etc.)
3. Podcasts
PODCASTS!!! If you follow me, you are probably already aware of those. However, in case you don't, let me introduce you to the wonderful world of Audiodramas.
The cool thing about Podcasts is that pretty much anyone can do it. All you need is an idea, a mic, a lot of motivation, and you're pretty much set to go. No producers or publishers you need to get approval from. So it is only natural that this medium is filled to the brim with queer creators. Basically every character is somewhat queer. It's awesome.
Examples:
- The Silt Verses. I adore TSV. I listened to the first season like, four times. (the second one is good too but OH MY GOD THE FIRST ONE). And one of the main characters is canonically and explicitly aro!! Sister Carpenter, I love you with my whole being. And the great thing is, it is very clear that the writers love her, too!! There is a lot (like a LOT) of body horror so it isn't for everybody. But if you think you can handle it I really recommend it. (Plus, not any romance plotlines at all !!)
- Wolf 359. This is one of the older ones and it is really good. It's a bunch of restless and very unwell people stuck in a spaceship under the unforgiving rule of capitalism. However bad you imagine it, I can assure you it is worse. But the really cool thing is that there literally isn't any romance at all. Like, there are great m/f friendships but they never even hint towards a romance. Some people are so unused to that that they literally ship the main dude with the fucking robot AI. (don't worry, not an actual romance plot).
- Girl in space. I am sure you will be absolutely shook to know that this one also takes place in space. It is about a girl. In space. Shocking, I know. Except that she has been on her own for well over a year when suddenly a fleet of strange ships arrive and kidnap her. There is also a very asshole-y robot. And questions about what makes us human. And found family!! And a goat. And cheese. Just go listen to it okay. This is also one of the shortest ones of the list, so maybe a good start.
- Malevolent. I have to confess that I personally am not a huge fan of this one? Like the premise is really cool - a detective who wakes up blind and with a demon in his head who can see through the detectives eyes. What the fuck?, you may ask yourself. So does Arthur Lester. Mysteries and other dimensions and a whole lot of pain ensues. Harlan is undeniably an awesome VA and a great writer, but his stories just seem a bit too repetitive to me? Nonetheless I know of lots of people who enjoy it a lot. Trying to define the relationship between Arthur and John (his demon) is perhaps the biggest mystery of them all. (Jk. there are multiple murders and stuff. they've really got other priorities)
- Middle:Below. This is another short one and probably the least famous of this list? It's about this funky lil dude with a ghost roommate and a cat who can talk (.....or can it?). There is a m/f friendship but it never turns into a romance (wow it is possible!!). They all go on adventures on the dimension between life and death. Despite the description, this is literally just a comedy. A bit spooky at best. Reminds me a bit of scarier kids cartoons like gravity falls.
4. "Gay" movies/series in countries with homophobic censorship
Now you may think, "hey that seems like a bit of an asshole move!". And you would be 100% correct in thinking that.
However.
It does also mean that the main relationship of the story can never be explicitly romantic. They can allude to it, they can try to show it. But they can never confirm. So it is very easy to interpret them as having a QPR. (because tbh I don't think I've ever seen one on television.)
Examples:
The Untamed. Look. I am aware that the first episode is so fucking atrocious, all right? And no, the CGI does in fact never get better. And sometimes the translated subtitles are a bit awkward. But I swear that it is so good. Trust me on this one, okay? Just make it through the first ep. It's a wild ride. Lan Zhan I love you. (However the book it is based on (written by a woman) depicts them being in an explicitly romantic relationship, with lots of very inaccurate and badly researched smut, so the fandom pretty much sees them as exclusively romantic.)
- Word of Honor. Very much in the same vein as The Untamed. Except that the first episode is less horrible. And the one dude has a very fruity fan. And they also raise a kid together. And the costumes of the villains are really fun!! I actually never finished this one tbh. I know that the book it is based on has one very extremely terrible ableist plot point, but I don't know if that made it into the show since I never got that far
The Devil Judge. The last two were fantasy, this one is a dystopia. Very tense and interesting. There is a romantic subplot (typical childhood friend vs bad boy love triangle), but he rejects the childhood friend and they can't exactly show him and the "bad boy" (who is actually a judge. and also kinda his sugar daddy) as explicitly romantic for the reason above. They also live in the same house and cook together and take care of a child together. Can totally recommend.
Assassination Classroom. A bunch of students have to kill their teacher who is an alien. that's literally the plot. I cried so hard at the finale. Nagisa and Karma have MASSIVE vibes and you can't convince me otherwise. (There is a romantic subplot that does end in a kiss, but they agree to continue as friends since those were..... extenuating circumstances. The dude very clearly is not into her). Nagisa also very aro-spec coded imo.
5. "Straightbaiting" Anime
Sometimes Anime does this thing (which I personally find very hilarious) where a boy and a girl will have no other romantic involvements or love interests while growing closer and closer, but never get together. A bit like reverse queerbaiting.
Examples:
- Fairy Tail. The ultimate power is friendship anime. That is all you need to know. (I should also perhaps warn you that the end of the last arc (and the sequel series, but we don't talk about that) are huge letdowns. Like the buildup? So good. But....welp. If that doesn't bother you too much and the idea to have a group of people be the main character instead of one person only, this may be the series for you. Just do yourself a favor and skip all the filler arcs
Soul Eater. I really love the vibes of this one. Once again, most of the fandom likes depicting them as explicitly romantic, but they never canonically are. It also reminds me a bit of creepy children cartoons. It is also where the superior fictional school exists, Devon. Frankenstein teaches there (the dude, not the monster). People transform into badass weapons. Nobody can convince me that Make Albarn is not a trans woman. However the ending deviates a bit from the manga, and I personally think the anime one is a bit worse
Noragami. This one will always hold a special place in my heart because it was the first anime I really watched. This one also has people who transform into weapons, but the vibes are very different. It goes a bit more into Japanese folklore in case that interests you.
Bonus: Canonically Aro/Heavily Aro-Coded Characters
They were not anywhere above because the stories they are in didn't really fit any of the categories. But they exist!
Wolf (Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts). I adore Wolf. There is also barely any romance. Like, it will seem like it at first, but don't worry, it's only straightbaiting. There is a romance subplot but it's very brief and very much in the background. Overall very good aro show 👍
Isaac (Heartstopper) Very queer show, very high likelihood that you already know of it. The series per se is very romance focused, but as far as I've heard the a-spec rep in S2 is really good
Georgia (Loveless). Actually never read it. But, well. Title pretty self-explanatory dare I say. By the same author as Heartstopper (Alice Oseman)
Chance/Chris and Shadow/Ryan (woe.begone) Are explicitly in a QPR together !! they are also probably the healthiest couple in the podcast lol
Henry Clerval (Frankenstein). Henry is the "a couple of besties!!" to Victor's "we look like a couple <3"
Barbie (Barbie 2023) If you've seen it you know what I mean.
Jo Marsh (Little Women). I never read the book, but Jo in the 2019 movie??? very sus.
I would also recommend checking out Japanese books! I personally think they are much better at writing romance than the western people lol. It's more about knowing each other and sharing your views of the world, thus changing each other and leaving a mark forever, even if the relationship ends. (studio ghibli romance vibes). My favorite Japanese book doesn't have an English translation :(
aber an alle Deutsch-Sprecher*innen: Die Katzen von Shinjuku (Durian Sukegawa) -> og title: Shinjuku no Neko
Can't think of anything else right now, but please leave some of your own recommendations! Hope this helps ^^
