The federal grants freeze today was an attempt to break the US Constitution. It aimed to defund programs passed by LAW because they don’t align with maga “ideology.” He’s already got the Supreme Court in his pocket and now Congress is letting him wrestle lawmaking power from them…

Listening to NPR has been a bit of safe haven the last several weeks because like, sure batshit scary things are happening, but at least there are credentialed, knowledgeable people speaking reasonably about those batshit scary things.

Except today as I was on my way to the gym, I listened to a segment where NPR was reporting on the fact that Trump is attempting to remove funding to/shut down NPR (and PBS) and I was like. Ah. Of course. I should have suspected this.

Haven’t seen anything about this here yet but they’re trying to pass something in March that basically makes companies like Lyft and DoorDash to reclassify their workers from "contractors" to "employees" and idk this is kinda cool. It basically makes them follow six criteria to see wether the worker is an ‘employee’ or a ‘contractor’ whereas Trump’s old rule was only two and it was like super weirdly vaguely worded

The title is a bit inflammatory but the article describes that it’s a pretty big win for the workers so

You know I gotta say it’s alarming how many people are ready to throw democrats under the bus for this TikTok ban when Trump was the one who began the process and I know people hate to hear it but there were VALID REASONS to be concerned about TikTok as a security threat and spreader of disinformation.

It’s almost like the years online actors spent sowing division, defeatism, and distrust within the US progressive community worked and now people don’t even notice when they’re falling prey to these tactics…..

Anyway idk how the answer to the TikTok debate became something other than “actually, yeah, TikTok is awful AND ALL social media companies need to be properly regulated.”

in light of recent events with the election, i want to remind everyone to take care of themselves the best they can. i know that things are really hard right now for so many people—women, poc, lgbtq+, especially. but please do not forget that there are people out there who love you, who care for you, and wish nothing but the best for you. check in on your loved ones, and check in on yourself 🤍

It's Super (?) Tuesday, and my new cartoon for today's Boston Globe illustrates just who … and what … some people are voting for. I have not drawn the former guy since he left office. I didn't want to give him any further attention, and, like many, wished he would go away. For over 3 years he has only appeared as a small silhouette, a dangling red tie, or the back of his head, if at all, in my cartoons. Sadly, he can no longer be ignored. I thought a lot about how to bring him back into my visual lexicon, and decided to play off the long-running meme, with him depicted as the object of infatuation.

something about the tiktok ban that i haven't really seen people here talking about is the experience of tiktok users not from the usa, which was, as far as i can tell, on the whole, very positive. it was actually really nice to, for a short period of time, be on a major social media network and able to interact with people across the world without usamericans constantly inserting themselves into every conversation.

usamericans kind of take over people's fyp regardless of where you're from. this is partly to do with the fact that the creators fund is only available to usamericans so most of the shitty content farms are from the us. then there's also the cultural aspect of the fact that being a citizen of the most powerful empire in the world is a significant privilege, and also a privilege that 99% of usamericans are seemingly unable to acknowledge, plus the us centrism and exceptionalism, plus the constant need to cast themselves as the underdog, and, well. it's annoying.

so, like. everything of what i've seen (which is not to say that other opinions don't exist, just that i haven't seen them) is that it was really nice when the usamericans were gone, and it kind of sucks that they're back.
