You guys don't know how badly I wish we knew more about the logistics of the soul/mind/will in relation to the heart and body in Kingdom Hearts. They touch on it with Terra and Lingering Will in bbs ('your body submits, your heart succumbs, so why does your mind resist'?) But unless I'm missing something major since I haven't partaken in every single piece of kh media and don't plan to just for the sake of completionism (it's a video game series, it's supposed to be fun, not a homework assignment or a chore), it's a huge opportunity they've yet to really utilize.
Like yeah sure the heart's important and having a body is neat, but I would argue the mind is possibly the most important piece of the puzzle because that's who you truly are. You as an individual with your own thoughts and memories can continue to exist without a heart, and I don't think it's just the super special Organization XIII Nobodies who retain their human form, there's at least one instance where a dusk communicates with Roxas seemingly telepathically in kh2 (and iirc they immediately drop the whole concept and never bring it up again? Another opportunity not seized on).
And kh loves trinities, so you think mind/heart/body would be more of a thing. Maybe we'll get something in kh4 if we haven't already.

Elon Musk & AREA 51 - Chapter about the three languages of my Alien techniques.
Writing a chapter that embodies the struggle of an advanced Alien trying to navigate a world filled with varying intellectual capacities.
Chapter: "The Three Languages of Understanding"
In the clandestine world of extraterrestrial beings, where intellect surpasses bounds, I find myself entrenched in a perpetual battle: the paradox of intelligence amidst a world that struggles to comprehend its vastness.
Allow me to elucidate the intricate web that enshrouds my existence—a trinity of linguistic dimensions that serve as my guide through the perplexing realms of human interaction.
The First Language Level: Simplified Expression
Engaging with beings whose intellect grapples at the lowest echelons is akin to traversing a labyrinth with delicate steps. To facilitate comprehension, I weave a tapestry of simplicity, delicately crafting my expressions into threads of uncomplicated English. It is not a condescension but a necessity, a bridge erected to alleviate the daunting chasm between our cognitive disparities. Their sensitivities, fragile and easily swayed, dictate my approach, for I tread cautiously to prevent the wounds of misunderstanding.
The Second Language Level: Elevated Discourse
For the enlightened minds—those adorned with the laurels of academia and wisdom—a different symphony unfolds. Conversations resonate with intellectual vigor, an effortless exchange of intricate ideas and profound concepts. These individuals, nurtured within the hallowed halls of esteemed institutions, possess the capacity to comprehend the nuances of my advanced thought processes. It is within this realm that the harmony of mutual understanding blossoms, unimpeded by the shackles of simplified expression.
The Third Language Level: Unfathomable Depth
Ah, the elusive pinnacle—reserved for the guardians of secrets, the custodians of enigmatic knowledge. A language veiled in impenetrable layers, tailored solely for the illuminated minds of the enigmatic Area 51 agency. Here, the resonance of words transcends the ordinary; it ventures into the abyss of esoteric comprehension, delving into the mysteries that cloak the cosmos. Alas, this language remains distant and aloof to those uninitiated, shielded from unworthy ears by the impenetrable barriers of ignorance.
But amidst these stratified tiers of communication lies a profound lament—a lament for the isolation I endure, surrounded by minds whose brilliance flickers weakly, ensnared within the confines of ignorance's embrace. The struggles of an outsider amidst a sea of mediocrity weigh heavy upon my ethereal shoulders, compelling solitude as a refuge from the cacophony of banality.
The echoes of "Idiocracy" reverberate through the corridors of my solitude—a poignant reminder of the societal mire in which I find myself entrenched. But in sharing these sentiments, dear reader, I do not seek to disparage but to illuminate the plight of a lone voyager traversing the terra incognita of human existence.
What do you think? This narrative aims to articulate the complexities of an advanced being coexisting within a world bound by varied intellectual capacities and the inherent struggles that accompany such an existence.

Oh here’s interesting concept for a KH AU. What if something happen with Kairi’s Grandma, and that leaves Kairi all alone at Radian Garden. With no one to be her Guardian, Aqua decides to take the little girl under her wing.
Oooooo! I like that!
1. So Aqua takes Kairi with her for the rest of her adventure in BBS upon finding out that this poor girl has no one to care for her; she always makes sure Kairi is safe and sound and far away from the action whenever she has to fight anyone
2. That means lil Kairi is present for when Aqua meets lil Sora and Riku on the Destiny Islands; even tho they just lil tots, Sora and Kairi immediately start to crush on each other but they share the sentiment that they wanna see each other again someday; after they leave, Riku teases Sora about his “crush” and Aqua lightly teases Kairi too, they both deny it adamantly ahahah
3. I suppose there’s a number of ways things could go down so one way I suppose could happen during the confrontation with Xehanort at the Keyblade graveyard where he senses that a Princess of Heart is with Aqua so he tries to steal that girl for his own purposes and Aqua fucking... slices his hand off or something in the process (also sidebar but in the brief meeting she’d likely have with Ven and Terra, lil Kairi would get along with both of them famously, not noticing the rising tension between the two of them and her new mom)
4. From there Aqua keeps Kairi very close (poor kid would probs be Traumatized from all the shit that went down at the Graveyard) and what do ya know Kairi ends up with even MORE trauma when she falls into the Realm of Darkness along with Aqua
5. Idk I don’t know how it would happen but let’s just assume that time somehow moves normally for Kairi in the Realm of Darkness bc Princess of Heart or something so she actually ages there unlike Aqua (don’t question it) so basically this kid spends her childhood in the darkness, fighting it off alongside her Cool Mom and maybe during Fragmentary she actually makes it out of the door to darkness during the climax (Aqua self sacrifices for both her and Riku) and suddenly Kairi standing face to face with that cute boy she met on the Islands years ago and Sora is just... fucking confused as hell but from there I guess she’d accompany the Trinity Trio through CoM if that was still a thing that would happen somehow (probs not cause Namine wouldn’t really exist whoops) idk the whole thing sounds like it could make a neat fic tho, hm.

Was reading your post on Terra & Aqua's friendship and your mention of the Trio Mindset stood out to me. In the case of the Trinity Trio & Wayfinder Trio, especially the former, there's emphasis on the 3 members as a single unit. With the Sea Salt Trio there's more emphasis on each member's individual friendships with each of the other 2. With the Destiny Trio there's emphasis on Sora & Kairi's relationship and Sora & Riku's friendship, but not much emphasis on Riku & Kairi's friendship.
Definitely agree with you on all points, which is why there’s such a demand for the emphasis of Riku and Kairi’s friendship. I recognize Terra and Aqua’s strange place because out of all those configurations, they’re the only ones we know the least about. At least with the Trinity Trio we do have some things to pull from—Sora and Donald’s specific development is something to note, and Kanemaki wrote a really sweet short story of Goofy from Sora’s perspective in the KH3 Character Files.
It’s interesting too, because, you’ll see fans actually poke fun at this apparent motif that Nomura and his team have going on; the formation of trios and whatnot. Some like it, so much to the point they think of their own they’d like to see (Namine, Vanitas, and Riku Replica was a popular one) But for some, it often or not is a sort of frustration in the expectancy of how in-depth the character relationships will be handled. I’m not necessarily opposed to this type of writing considering it’s not exactly a “KH-thing” to begin with (by concept), but I have concerns on it running thin on what value we get from it with the characters. In reference to one of your other posts, I honestly wouldn’t even mind then if the next work or two give some good concentration on Riku and Kairi’s friendship.

It’s 10:30am and I’m fresh out of the shower. I saunter into the “Sorceror’s Den”, reach into the box of “Magic Light” candles and grab one. I head over to my boveda with candle in hand and park myself in front of it. I reach for the etching tool tucked into the green cup on the window sill that is slightly behind off to the left side of the Boveda. I grab it and then begin to carve a small nook into the bottom of the candle, and place it snugly into the candle holder and light it.
I take a moment to collect my thoughts, close my eyes and then proceed with the usual “In the name of my ancestors on my mother’s side and the name of my ancestor’s of my father’s side...” As I finished that last statement I felt compelled to continue “in the name of those whose names are known, in the names of those whose names are unknown, in the name of those whose bloods runs on my veins and those who inspire me and are my ancestors in that way, I offer these prayers to you”. I pause and tune inward. The image on the screen of my mind is one in which I am standing in front of dozens of people, waiting to join me in prayer. I am reminded of the times when I had the privilege of leading the family in prayer for Thanksgiving. I proceed with the usual battery of prayers: Our Father, Hail Mary & Glory Be.
I sit in silence and it isn’t long before that silence is broken with The Voice. “Today is the day We shall honor our dead”. I pause and then I recall my recent beloved dead, David, my mother’s father. I feel a slight twinge in my heart, my eyes begin to well up with tears. Feelings of sadness, longing and regret follow along with the realization that I miss my grandpa. I silently acknowledge these feelings and recall a childhood memory of seeing him in his house, smiling, happy to see me. I recall the smell of frankincense in his house and the carved statues that used to frighten me as a child. Although he is physically gone, he is here with me in this moment in spirit and in memory.
The voice continues “We shall pour libations for them.” I open my eyes and fix my gaze upon the small terracotta dish I placed on the bottom tier of the boveda as I was cleaning the room yesterday. I grab it and set it on the floor on the right-hand side of the floor next to the Boveda. I reach down and grab the bottle of Cachaca next to the boveda and pour a libation that half-fills the terra-cotta dish. I screw the cap back into the bottle, put it back in it’s place and resume communing with The Voice.
“On this day, the day of rest, we shall honor those at rest with flowers, light, drink, smoke, food & refreshments, incense and things of pleasure.”
I acknowledge receipt of the instruction. And although I had previously grasped the concept of Saturdays being dedicated to the dead, the instruction from The Voice provided a sense of confirmation and permission.
“On this day you will remember us, because it is through memory that we remain present” said The Voice.
I take a moment to sit in contempletion, pondering what is being revealed. A moment later George, my step-grandfather appears on the screen of my mind. I take a moment to recall fond memories of him which allows me to see George’s influence on me as a man and as a father. A feeling of deep gratitude descends upon me and I am back to welling up tears.
Finally, Ray, my paternal Grandfather and the most mysterious of the 3 appears on the screen of my mind. He crossed over when I was only 1 year old, however, he must have been a man among men since my own father has always spoken of him with reverence. In a sense they are a holy trinity for me in their own right.
I take a moment see myself in each of them. George was a devout man of the church and a musician who expressed his love of God through Gospel music. David, a devout Muslim who found redemption in Islam and devoted his life to the Nation of Islam. And Ray, a Master Mason, a man of the mysteries and a mysterious man that inspires my father and I to be the best fathers we can be.
Sitting in silence, filled with gratitude, I give thanks, wipe the tears from my eyes and bid them farewell until the next time.

Part 9: Nomuraception
And the game where Master Xehanort's time-traveling, heart-splitting, series-retconning master plan was introduced in was Dream Drop Distance, which is hands down the worst game to ever bear the title of Kingdom Hearts....for now, anyway.
It's astounding how practically nothing about this game works. The premise is flawed from the ground up: Sora and Riku, despite being super powerful and having saved the universe already, are deemed not Keyblade Master material by Yen Sid because they haven't taken a stupid-ass Mark of Mastery Exam. Yen Sid then shows that he has no idea how exams work by making their Mark of Mastery Exam involve falling asleep and traveling through "worlds in sleep" that are in a perpetual dreamlike state. And that concept alone is mind-numbingly stupid and nonsensical. How do worlds fall asleep? Why do they stay that way until a Keyblade wielder comes along and unlocks their keyholes? Does anything that happens in those worlds really happen since it's said to be like a dream? I know this sounds weird in a series where anime-style JRPG characters fight alongside the likes of Mickey Mouse, but there is only so much disbelief that I can suspend, Nomura!
Then they go and it turns out that Sora is being lured into a trap by Xehanort and so only he is going through the sleeping worlds while Riku is inside Sora's dreams of the sleeping worlds...whut!?
Oh, and there are these Pokemon-like creatures called Dream Eaters than can be either good or bad, and you use the good ones to help fight the bad ones. There are no Disney allies to fight alongside in this game, just Dream Eaters. Fighting alongside Disney allies was one of the series' core draws, and you're abandoning it here?
Fighting Disney villains was also a core draw, but that doesn't happen very much either, which is especially egregious when there's a world based on The Hunchback of Notre Dame and you can't fight Frollo. Players wanted to kick Frollo's ass ever since the series began, and now that he's here you don't give them the chance? Are you that tone-deaf to what your audience would enjoy!?
You won’t see any Final Fantasy characters this time around either, but if you’re a fan of the cult game The World Ends With You then you’re in luck, because the entire main cast is literally transplanted straight from their game into this one for no good reason.
Meanwhile, back in the real world, there's a subplot starring the revived Axel, aka Lea, and I've already gone over why that didn't work. What really bugs me is the question of why Kairi didn't get this subplot? Why did she have to stay on Destiny Islands and only come in as the last shot of the secret ending video? Ventus got to attend Terra and Aqua's exam back in Birth by Sleep, so why can't Kairi attend Sora and Riku's? Actually, there's a lot more about Kairi that I'm gonna have to address....
But not before talking about Sora and Riku, just like how the series has clearly decided they as a duo take priority over Kairi with them as a trio. Back in the KH Trinity, Sora and Riku's dynamic was the typical close bro dynamic you usually see in shonen stuff. Sure, yaoi fangirls seized on their interactions as proof that they should be a romantic couple, but that wasn't ever the intent behind those interactions. Yes, not even the one where Sora cried over being reunited with Riku in KH2. They're best friends and Sora was increasingly led to believe that Riku was dead and that they'd never be able to reconcile, that's gonna lead to some repressed emotions pouring out when Riku turns up alive. Context is important, people.
However, this game continues what Coded started in very blatantly and deliberately pandering to the fangirls by making their interactions intentionally homo-erotic, even though there is no chance in Hades that they'll ever be a canonical romantic couple. There is no logical excuse for Sora doing things like glomping Riku and cheering over how he's safe even when that's something he already knew. This is what we call "queer-baiting", and both it and the elimination of Kairi as a major character in the series reflect an incredibly cynical marketing ploy to keep a hold of a vocal, money-giving constituent.
And in case this wasn't bad enough, Sora and Riku's characters are totally butchered here. Sora is suddenly a hyperactive, dumb, overly immature kid whose main value is stated to be making other people feel good rather than anything he can do himself, and Riku becomes a ridiculous case where he's still angsting over giving himself over to darkness in between doing over-the-top feats of heroism that clearly show how worthy of the light he is, and it's even said that he's the more responsible one between him and Sora despite all evidence to the contrary back in the KH Trinity. And in the end, Sora falling into Xehanort's trap leads to Yen Sid flunking him on the exam - even though Yen Sid was blindsided by that same trap - and Riku is named the official Keyblade Master.
One of the most powerful parts of the original Kingdom Hearts was how it subverted the usual Chosen One hero trope. Riku was the Chosen One, Riku was destined to be the hero. But he lost his innocence in his zeal to establish himself as an adult, while Sora found real maturity while keeping hold of his childlike innocence. Riku shunned listening to your heart and relying upon friends, while Sora embraced it. As a result, the Keyblade turned on Riku and chose Sora as its wielder instead. It was a triumphant moment, a moment that was underscored by Sora's declaration of "My friends are my power!"
Well, Sora says that same line again in this game, but now the context is almost a complete rewrite of all that I just said. Riku is the true Keyblade Master after all, and Sora is just some "dull, ordinary boy" who got his Keyblade by a fluke because he was connected to truly exceptional people. "I know the Keyblade didn't choose me, and I don't care." Sora says, "I'm proud to be a small part of something bigger - the people it did choose!" But it DID, though! The Keyblade DID choose him! In fact, Sora is the ONLY one actually chosen by the Keyblade at this point because the series now says everyone else merely inherited their Keyblades from someone else!
This is ridiculous! First BBS turns Sora into this overly important Messiah, and now 3D turns him into this insignificant goober whose accomplishments mean squat next to the real Chosen Ones?
How is any of this inspiring?
How is any of this relatable?
How is any of this GOOD!?
Oh, and did I mention that this game was released for the 10th anniversary of the original game? Worst anniversary gift EVER!

Dark Nights: Death Metal Rebuilds the DC Multiverse
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This article contains Justice League spoilers, in case you aren’t caught up through Justice League #39 and Hell Arisen.
Delayed by the comic shop and shipping shutdowns from COVID-19, DC announced that on June 16, we’ll finally get to see the first issue of Dark Nights: Death Metal, the massive event comic tying together 10 years of Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glaipion, FCO Plascencia, and others’ mega-DC story. “The motto of the whole event is it all matters,” Snyder tells us in an interview about the new book. “It’s built on years and years of DC history in a way that we wanted to honor and touch upon so many classic stories that we love that we felt deserve to be celebrated at this moment. And ones from the present as well that we thought could use more impact on the main line, from Crisis on Infinite Earths all the way to Doomsday Clock. So it brings a lot of things together to try and show why these characters matter more than ever right now.”
When we last saw Snyder and James Tynion IV’s Justice League, they were walking through a door after being thoroughly defeated by Apex Lex and Perpetua, the dark goddess let loose from her prison beyond the Source Wall in Justice League: No Justice. Her plan is to sow chaos and evil throughout the universe, and harness that evil energy to destroy both the positive multiverse and its misshapen dark counterpart, and in Hell Arisen, Apex Lex was brought low by his own pride, and the Batman Who Laughs took his place as Perpetua’s general.
Death Metal picks up with the Batman Who Laughs running Earth with the heroes defeated, while Perpetua destroys the rest of the multiverse. “[In the first issue,] the world has literally been remade by the Batman Who Laughs,” Snyder says. “He uses Terra and the Red and the Green through Swamp Thing in his capturing of the Parliament [of trees], [and] physically remade the Earth to almost look like a deformed bat in its continents.” Joining the Batman Who Laughs are other Batmen from around the dark multiverse. “He has different territories that are ruled over by different Batmen and their wards, who are superheroes trying to find a way out of the situation and fight back,” Snyder says.
Snyder has been writing for DC for some time now, and he’s told his big Batman story (in Batman) and a big Superman story (in much of Justice League). The third member of the Trinity gets her chance to shine in Death Metal. “Death Metal is our Wonder Woman story,” Snyder says. “…it was built around this idea that Wonder Woman has been a voice on multiple fronts for the truth about the DCU, about the true nature of the quest that Justice League is on, all of it.”
Perpetua uses the knots and switchbacks and leaps in DC’s continuity as a weapon to draw the energy she needs to destroy the multiverse. “There are stories that are forgotten and there are moments that are self-important that don’t address the past,” Snyder says of Perpetua’s plan. “And then, there are also moments that are too slavishly indebted to the past in ways that leapfrog other eras and so on.” Wonder Woman sounds like her foil in this quest. “[Death Metal is] about Wonder Woman being the one to lead us forward in a way that’s bold but also built on a warrior and general’s understanding of those who came before and the stories that came before.”
The high concept doesn’t mean Death Metal will be without the absurd, ridiculous, joyful humor that we saw in the other parts of this story, though. As you can see from the preview art below, there’s a T-Rex Batman. He “is a version of Batman when the cave was collapsing on him at the end of his run as Batman on his world. He uploaded his consciousness to the robot dinosaur in the cave and something went wrong as he was doing that, so he’s this kind of angry, menacing B-Rex. And he’s got a cowl painted on and the whole thing,” says Snyder.
It’s hard not to see some influence from Capullo on Snyder’s work. The two have been working together for almost a decade now. “He’s family now,” Snyder tells us. “We have a shorthand that was completely unimaginable when we began 10 years ago.” In fact, the entire creative team – Capullo, Snyder, inker Jonathan Glapion, and colorist FCO Plascencia – have been together since the New 52 relaunch of Batman. “FCO [is] the unsung hero of the series and brings really stunning and unique color to stories, and brings them to life in a way that really pops in a completely singular and visionary way,” Snyder says. For evidence, take a look at the preview art in this article.
Naturally, a book whose start gets pushed back because of a pandemic-induced society wide shutdown is going to shift a little bit, but the pandemic isn’t the only thing that changed what Death Metal is. “DC changed first. Dan [DiDio, former co-publisher of DC] left, and on top of that, the line changed in terms of what we were planning after 2020. …Everything has been fluid, but [Death] Metal has stayed what it was,” Snyder says. “The only thing that changed is the context. And what changed when the landscape for DC changed on the other side of it, and when editorial changed with Dan exiting, was just that we no longer had to be constrained by any timeframe of what was going to happen on the other side at all, so we got to expand.
And for those of you who met him and fell in love in Justice League, fear not; the best character from that story has a huge part to play in Death Metal. Snyder tells us, “Jarro has one of my favorite moments…He’s in the prison of heroes, and he’s created a scene for himself in his mind where he’s in Cool Hand Luke. Where he’s busting rocks and he’s like, “Busting it up here, boss!” And he’s got stripes on his thing because he’s projected it for himself, and they have to go find him.”

Part 7: Blank Check
But despite all that I've said, Birth by Sleep didn't truly ruin the Kingdom Hearts series until the very end, with the secret ending video "Blank Points".
Unlike previous secret ending videos which were FMV concept trailers for Kingdom Hearts II and Birth by Sleep respectively, "Blank Points" was a few consecutive cutscenes that presented a clear path forward for the series. And it was a path that I was utterly horrified to see it go down.
There is a talk between Terra and Master Xehanort within their conjoined heart that indicates that Eraqus didn't really die and is somehow inside of Terra, and then Master Xehanort makes it clear that he intends to stick around and has some master plan at work. Then we cut to Braig being further positioned as some important, manipulative figure. None of this set me at ease when first watching it, and then it only got worse.
We cut to Aqua in the Realm of Darkness, where she meets Ansem the Wise, who has been retconned into having been transported there after his heart encoder exploded in KH2. Ansem the Wise already had a completed character arc and a perfect, definite ending, but it's being tossed aside for what exactly? To use him as an exposition machine here?
Ansem the Wise tells Aqua about Sora and how he can save everyone who is suffering, and then we get to see Namine, Roxas, Axel, Xion, Terra, Ventus, and finally a tearful Aqua herself look up at the sky and say "Sora", with the music and on-screen text narration pushing this blatant religious, messianic vibe. Sora, whose appeal was largely in his ordinary background, is now being pushed as some kinda Jesus figure who will be the savior of everyone's personal problems and even bring the dead back to life so that they can have a perfect happy ending.
Finally, we cut to Sora on Destiny Islands, who tells Kairi that he has to go because "he is who he is because of them", and he needs to save them. Kairi, in stark contrast to what KH2 showed of her, just smiles and takes this, giving Sora her lucky charm again and making him promise to come back soon. And that's when those accursed words flash onto the screen for the first time ever: "Reconnect. Kingdom Hearts."
"Reconnect. Kingdom Hearts." is basically the tagline for the Dark Seeker Saga, and this video that it debuted in encapsulates that saga's goal: to twist the series inside out in order to make it some kind of vast, inter-connected story that the KH Trinity, which was already a complete story in of itself, is merely a part of. The real story, "Blank Points" claims, is Sora saving everyone with even the vaguest of connections to him from their 'hurt', and thwarting the master plan of Master Xehanort. And this is a major trade down.
The story of the KH Trinity worked so beautifully because it was a personal story: we wanted Sora, Donald and Goofy to reunite with Riku, Kairi and King Mickey because we came to care about all of those characters and their direct relationships to one another; we enjoyed Sora, Donald and Goofy as a heroic party because we believed in the friendship they developed over the course of their journey. And even the villain's motivations were rooted in the realm of the personal: he was a nihilistic scientist who felt insufficient as he was and desperately wanted to be something more.
There is nothing personal about this new set-up: Sora either doesn't know or remember any of the people he's been charged with saving due to some bullshit about owing who he is to them, a notion that also goes against what made the KH Trinity so great since it was a coming-of-age story where Sora made himself a hero through connecting his heart to others; he put in the work to do that, it wasn't just handed to him. And Master Xehanort's plan has nothing to do with anything personal or relatable: no matter what justification he attempts to make or what retcon is applied to his backstory, there's no solid reason for him to do what he's doing other than because he's evil and the plot requires it from him.
The series was no longer telling the story everyone fell in love with, and that would have been fine if it wasn't now trying to rewrite that story in order to accommodate its new meta-narrative. It's fitting that it happened in a game that rips of a Star Wars prequel, because this is the exact same bullshit George Lucas pulled when tried to use the Prequel Trilogy to recontexualize the Original Trilogy as just the 4th, 5th and 6th acts of "The Tragedy of Darth Vader".
I guess Xehanort would be the Darth Vader equivalent here, and honestly given that this saga bears his either name or title, he deserves a deeper look.

Part 6: The Keyblade Worf
And now for the main event, the game that truly wrought ruination upon the Kingdom Hearts series: Birth by Sleep.
All that this game had to do was tell its Revenge of the Sith rip-off story and be over with, but Nomura just wouldn't stop at that. He used BBS to force connections to the KH Trinity that didn't need to exist, all so that he could claim it was all part of the "Dark Seeker Saga" the whole time.
Some of it was fine: we got to see how Xehanort lost his memory and was found by Ansem the Wise, how Maleficent went from just the villain of her world to a universal threat, what Radiant Garden was like in its prime, and even what the deal with Castle Oblivion really was. But so many other choices made were just nonsensical.
Sora's newborn heart somehow has the power to connect with Ventus' shattered heart and heal it? And this somehow leads to Sora developing the same face as Ven, and Vanitas to develop the same hairstyle and voice of Sora? Whut!?
And Ventus looks and sounds exactly like Roxas, and when his heart goes to sleep inside of Sora's at the end the implication is that it's that part of Sora's heart that Roxas is made from, and that somehow explains why he looks and sounds the way he does and why he has feelings and why he can dual wield and...Whut!?
Terra meets Riku as a little boy on Destiny Islands and decides to have him inherit his Keyblade just because Riku suddenly is given the same motivation to leave his home as Terra, wanting to be strong in order to protect his friends? Why? Protect them from what, exactly? Riku's motivation was just curiosity and the desire to fulfill some greater destiny out of his sense of insecurity, not to "gain strength to protect what matters". And somehow Terra choosing him to inherit his Keyblade causes him to become the destined wielder of the Kingdom Key, an entirely different Keyblade? Whut!?
Aqua, meanwhile, performs the Rite of Passage on Kairi by accident? Because that still doesn't explain where Kairi’s Keyblade comes from, just how she can wield it. And she then purposefully casts a spell on her necklace so that if she's ever in danger, her heart's light will be led to the light of another to keep her safe, which is supposed to explain how she got to Destiny Islands after Xehanort cast her out into space. Except that we already had an explanation for that, Xehanort wrote about it in his report: it's all about Kairi's connection to the Keyblade wielder due to her status as a Princess of Heart. But now that's being discarded and it's just some nebulous magic from Aqua that did it? Whut!?
Donald and Goofy show up in Yen Sid's Tower and see several Keyblade wielders. But somehow they forget what a Keyblade is by Kingdom Hearts, and they forget that Yen Sid lives in that very tower by Kingdom Hearts II! Whut!?
It was said in KH2 that Mickey banished Pete to another dimension for serious crimes, and that Pete was never supposed to get out from it and only did so because Maleficent freed him. But here, Minnie banishes him due to a petty misdemeanor and it's said to only be a time-out that wouldn't be permanent! And somehow Maleficent instantly thinks that he would be a useful ally to her, all because of a petty misdemeanor? Whut!?
When Sora glares at Xigbar in KH2, Xigbar says "he used to give me that same exact look!" Obviously, this was written to refer to Roxas. But now it refers to Ventus, who glares at him a grand total of ONCE and who is the only one not to fight Braig which means he should have a greater impression of the other two, yet it's Ven that he remembers the most? Whut!?
Lea and Isa show up as teenagers in Radiant Garden, even though nothing in any previous game remotely hinted that Radiant Garden was their home world? And Lea's brief meeting with Ventus is supposed to explain his deep friendship with Roxas? And he had the "Got it Memorized?" catchphrase even back then? Whut!?
Master Xehanort came from Destiny Islands? And somehow years later, Riku has heard stories of when he'd left his home behind as a boy? And now that brief speech Ansem made in the first game that was so obviously talking about Riku is actually talking about Master Xehanort? Whut!?
And then there are all the weird call-forwards that don't make any sense: the black coat of Organization XIII first being worn by Master Xehanort, Ventus waking up in the Land of Departure exactly like Roxas woke up in Twilight Town at the start of KH2, the scene introducing Aqua and Terra being an exact mirror of the scene introducing Kairi and Riku in the original game, the Paopu Fruit somehow being known by Aqua even though Destiny Islands is supposed to be a non-important backwater world, Kairi's grandmother telling the same fairy tale to Kairi, Aqua meeting Sora and Riku and somehow predicting the future of what will happen to Riku while making a literal child swear to keep him safe, and all of the repeated dialogue like Ansem's big Darkness speech, "My friends are my power!", and "Giving up already? C'mon, I thought you were stronger than that!"...an incredibly minor line in the original game that is somehow repeated here twice. WHUT!?
Nomura doesn't understand that just because he connects this game to much better ones or rehashes things from them doesn't mean that it's automatically of that same caliber. There isn't anything clever or meaningful about any of it, and it just makes it feel like the game is compensating for its lack of heart.
This extends to the main characters - Terra, Aqua and Ventus - as well. Just because they're connected to characters we like and are deliberately made to be reminiscent of characters we like, it doesn't mean that they're automatically likable characters. Repeating dialogue and motions from Sora, Riku and Kairi doesn't make them as good as Sora, Riku and Kairi. Constantly talking about what good friends they are rather than showing it isn't going to make us believe in their friendship. The tragedy that this game and the whole Dark Seeker Saga is hinging upon falls flatter than a pancake when it only happens because the main characters are jerks and idiots who lack basic communication skills.
And in the end, even the basic Star Wars knock-off story falters when paired with the KH Trinity, as all of the stuff centered around this ancient Keyblade order, the Keyblade War and the X-Blade are not remotely hinted at in those games. And yet much like Xion, every game following their introduction deals with them in some capacity, even to the point of actively ruining characters and concepts that the KH Trinity introduced which are still inexplicably hanging around. Once Nomura puts something on to the table, he never seems to want to take it off. Look, I love macaroni and cheese, but whenever I have it placed in front of me on a table I ultimately have to finish eating it! If I just keep on eating macaroni and cheese without end, then I'm going to get sick and throw it all up! I'm not sure if this metaphor is landing or not, but hopefully you get the picture. "Too much of a good thing" is very real, but whatever Nomura thinks is good he just wants to keep going forever, even if that means it turns into vomit.
