Transformation Retaliation
[ART] Problem: Tray and I were traversing the Mushroom Kingdom when we came upon a large chasm, with no bridge or platforms in sight. Hypothesis: Tray thought he could use a potion to turn me into Harshi the Yoshi, and then jump off of my back to the other side. Experiment: RETALIATION Data: My reaction was too slow to dodge his splash... The warmth and color from my body started to leave me as I quickly turned into a yoshi. And as my body filled out, I wasn't able to take my pants off in time, so there went another pair of expensive pants, ripped to tatters. I water bent my potion upon Tray. I don't know why he was surprised. I always come prepared. His skin changed colors and his nose grew a large lump that became his koopa beak. He shrank in size until his clothes sank into him and were flung away by his panicked flailing. Surprisingly, he grew a pair of wings with his transformation. And his shell color?...YES! Result: It's messy but it should work out. I don't have a breath mint though. BON APPETIT... ---_----_----- A Secret Santa present for Trayvonity. Thank you for hosting this exchange.

Trayvon Martin should be turning 30 years old this week. As we honor his life, achievements, and joy, we send love to his family.
Trayvon Martin’s story reawakened a global civil rights movement under Black Lives Matter, uniting millions of us in the continued fight for racial justice.
We remember him by the words of his mother, Sybrina Fulton: as a boy who was “a vessel that represents so many others;” a boy who sparked a movement; a boy who deserved to grow old.

jina valentine, TESTIMONY, DISINTEGRATION
Found paper, iron gall ink, treated with hydrogen peroxide (8) 24 x 16 inch panels.
Like Explication, Testimony was inspired by my inability to process news articles about the shooting deaths of young black men. Testimony consists of newspaper articles containing the victim’s mother’s testimony, hand-copied in iron gall ink, the text of which, through a process of accelerated oxidization, eats through the paper. The text is newspaper articles containing accounts from Samaria Rice, Lesyley McSpadden, Wanda Johnson, and Sybrina Fulton.
For this project I have been researching caustic, paper-eating inks. I stumbled upon iron gall ink (the focus of many academic studies, as it has caused deterioration of important ancient manuscripts). Gall ink is made by creating a tannic liquid from fermented, oak tree galls and adding ferrous sulfate and gum arabic. The excess of iron sulfate in many folk recipes for this ink makes them unstable. Through a process of iron oxidization and eventual cellulose deterioration, the inked areas of the paper loose tensile strength and disintegrate, leaving holes in paper. This resulting lattice-like excisions are similar to that of hand-cut paper. Following months of research, I’m accelerating the disintegration process (from hundreds of years to weeks).

It’s been 12 years since 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was pursued, shot, and killed by an armed vigilante while walking home from a Florida convenience store. Trayvon’s family will never receive justice—in part, due to Florida’s Shoot First law, which essentially makes murder legal.
Trayvon was a child and should be alive today. He should have celebrated his 29th birthday this month. He should have graduated from high school and pursued his dream of becoming a pilot. Instead, his future was stolen by a man emboldened by racist gun laws.
Our hearts are with Trayvon’s loved ones as they mourn 12 years without him. We will honor Trayvon, and all whose lives have been stolen in this senseless way, with action.

Gloria Oladipo at The Guardian:
On Monday, Daniel Penny, a 26-year-old white man, was acquitted of all charges related to the 1 May 2023 killing of Jordan Neely, a 30-year-old unhoused Black man with severe mental illness, on a New York City subway train. Penny was charged with second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide after he choked Neely for nearly six minutes, causing his death. The Marine veteran claimed self-defense after an unarmed Neely made threats to passengers and complained of being hungry and thirsty, according to witness testimony. In a police interview following Neely’s death, Penny referred to Neely as “just a crackhead” who was “acting like a lunatic”. Experts say Penny’s acquittal fits into a longstanding pattern of how white vigilante crime is treated in the US, with white killers celebrated and Black victims denigrated.
“In situations where people of color have tried to defend themselves, it’s a whole different result,” said Mark Brodin, a professor of law at Boston College Law School. “It’s as transparent a double standard as you can ever imagine. And race is the only explanation. Class enters into it with Mr Neely, his mental problems entered into it. But race is at the top of the pyramid.” Despite widespread outrage about Neely’s killing in New York City, Penny received an onslaught of support from those on the far right after his arrest. A crowdfunding campaign for Penny’s legal fund amassed more than $2.9m in the months after the incident. (Neely’s burial funds, on the other hand, raised just $150,094.) The Fox News host Greg Gutfeld called Neely a “violent mess” who was “better at impersonating Michael Meyers than Michael Jackson”, referring to Neely’s previous impersonations of the pop star. And another Fox News pundit, Kayleigh McEnany, laughed alongside her colleagues at protesters who gathered to condemn Neely’s killing.
Following his acquittal, Penny has been praised by conservatives, including the Florida governor, Ron DeSantis; Ben Shapiro and Meghan McCain, who called those critical of Penny “lunatics”. Such commentary is part of an “unfortunate spiral” in which news outlets, platforms and people “demonize individuals for existing”, said the NAACP president, Derrick Johnson. “The fact that [Penny] called this individual [a] crackhead shows his state of mind. He didn’t see this person as someone who was human [or who] more or less had the right to live.” Brodin said that Penny’s acquittal was virtually certain, given the “history of the legal system sending these people out the back door at the courthouse. You can set your watch to it,” he said of cases in which white vigilantes claimed self-defense. “There’s just no accountability with these people.”
For example, George Zimmerman, who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed Black teenager, in Florida in 2012, Kyle Rittenhouse, who killed two men and injured a third during a Black Lives Matters protest in Wisconsin in 2020, and Bernhard Goetz, who shot four Black teenagers on the New York City subway in 1984, were all acquitted. Vigilantes like Penny are also generally portrayed and celebrated as “heroes”, Brodin added. Goetz was hailed as the “subway savior” by New York tabloids. And Rittenhouse received messages of support and fundraisers following his arrest for first degree intentional homicide. (Rittenhouse’s victims were all white, but the protest he traveled to was against the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man. Rittenhouse’s defense team said that he traveled across state lines to the demonstration to “help people”.)
Acquittal of white vigilantes takes place for several reasons, said Brodin. For one, standards of self-defense are based on a perpetrator’s testimony that they believed they were in danger, with the burden of proof in a criminal case high and jurors being “vulnerable to fear mongering by the defense lawyers”.
The acquittal of Daniel Penny is yet more proof that White vigilante violence is A-OK.

The Black Lives Matter movement hits a milestone on Thursday, marking 10 years since its 2013 founding in response to the acquittal of the man who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
Gunned down in a Florida gated community where his father lived in 2012, Martin was one of the earliest symbols of a movement that now wields influence in politics, law enforcement and broader conversations about racial progress in and outside the U.S.
BLM activists and organizations plan to mark a decade of the movement with in-person and virtual events. Calls to action include a renewed push to defund police departments and reinvest in Black communities that have suffered disproportionately from police brutality, unequal treatment in criminal justice systems and mass incarceration.
In the wake of Supreme Court decisions that stymied relief from student loan debt held disproportionately by Black borrowers and banned affirmative action in higher education, the need for BLM’s existence couldn’t be more clear, said prominent movement activist Melina Abdullah.
“What this movement moment means is that we have to absolutely redouble our efforts and redouble our commitment to making Black lives matter,” said Abdullah, who is a director of BLM Grassroots Inc, a collective of organizers across the country.
“Ten years in, we’re getting a glimpse at what would happen if there were no Black Lives Matter,” she said. “We’re not just going to fight when it’s popular, but we’re going to fight because we need to fight.”
