Urban Sketches from Venice 2024 No. 1

Waiting for my late night flight to Jakarta, Indonesia at LAX in the Fall of 2022. The sketch was done with a 6B or 8B pencil- easy to get those rich blacks with such a soft lead. The problem is to keep it from smearing later on as the book gets jostled around during travel. I find that a cheap ladies hairspray works just as well as a costly fixative. So what if it smells like a low- rent hair salon. (It's all that lacquer and phony perfume.) But it does the job. And when the next flight rolls around you're offloading a 1.98$ can of hairspray rather than a 20.00$ can of "quality" fixative.
