Barry Allen and Iris West are fundamentally opposites. For being a man with super speed, Barry Allen is a very calm, relaxed, happy go lucky type of man. Or at least, that's how I see him. He doesn't have too much personality in the old 60s stories, but I just get very down-to-earth vibes from him. Meanwhile, Iris West is a virtual workaholic, always on the go. She's married to her job as a reporter, and she's always mocking Barry for being slow and lazy. She's a very impatient person who always wants to get to the action, which makes her the polar opposite of Barry.

And I know they say opposites attract, but do opposites who love each other call the other slow constantly? Do they? I don't really think they do. Because that's just insulting (doubly so when you remember the secondary meaning of the word slow). She just comes off as a little bit rude, which makes it so hard for me to even like them as a couple. Literally anyone would be better for Barry. And considering the only other character in his age range he gets any real consistent interaction with besides iris is Hal Jordan, well... it's not hard to prefer those two, is all i'm saying.
