And back to Gothenburg!
And, yes! Today was the day when we returned the Volvo to Gothenburg. Though so much has transpired during our trip and we’ve gone to so many places and have really packed a lot in, I can’t believe how quickly it has all flown by. We had our car for nine days and went so far with it, drove so much particularly in the last four days, and now we won’t see her until mid-September (because the car comes back to the U.S. on a cargo ship). So, in order to send her off, we had to drive back to the European Delivery Center in the industrial part of Gothenburg, and, as expected, there were some curly-cues and loops and how-do-we-get-there-from-here scenarios while driving to get to our destination. Have I mentioned how discombobulating it is to drive in Gothenburg?
Anyway, we left Örebro at about 9:15 a.m. and I drove the first leg. We basically went straight through to Gothenburg, with just one stop for gas and a bathroom break. We got to Gothenburg just before 2 p.m. and got all of our luggage out and waited a few minutes to sign some paperwork and that was just enough time for the kids to split a cinnamon bun and have some hot chocolate in the very lovely and sleek European Delivery Center that Volvo has going on. We then took a cab back into central Gothenburg and the Radisson, where we stayed three nights over the last few weeks, allowed us to put our luggage in their hold room, and we walked around for three hours before our train to Oslo.
One of the ladies who works at the hotel said, “Oh, there’s our favorite family!” That was sweet to hear, especially because we think our kids kind of bring chaos with them wherever they go ;) At least lots of nose . . . and creativity and energy, and sweetness, of course, but noise is probably the most obvious thing to strangers . . .
So, on our walk, we went to the large park in central Gothenburg, which I think is called Bältespännarparken. This was our third trip to the park so the kids really knew the lay of the land with the playground. Back home, we haven’t done a ton of playground play this last year, because with school and their activities, there wasn’t much time, sadly, for leisurely stops at the playground. And also, in Albuquerque, sometimes it is just too hot to make the playground sound attractive. But, this Gothenburg playground has soooo much fun stuff for kids who are very young and ones who are our kids’ ages. They had a ball today, basically chasing each other around and doing a circuit on two slides. They also chatted with a few toddlers and their parents and were very sweet with them, as a few were going down slides for the first time. Such fond memories -- sniff ;)
So, we did a bit more strolling and then went and had lunch at a place the kids and I had seen: Holy Greens. It was so great! They have like ten set salads, but you can swap three ingredients out in each. The kids got a kids’ salad, each, which contained five ingredients of their choice. Holy Greens is super clean, streamlined, and Swedish, haha. After lunch (which actually took a remarkably long time because it took Rowan what seemed like an eternity to finish all of his glass noodles), we walked a bit more on some of the central shopping streets and we went into an outdoor shop we found (which was very high-end, like higher-end than REI) and that was cool for Eric, especially, to see, and then we got our luggage and over to the train station we went, with plenty of time to spare. Our train was actually there waiting, so we got to board and just chill out!
Cece spent much of the time on the Gothenburg to Oslo journey playing with her Mo Willems activity book. It is so fun. If you don’t know his characters -- like The Pigeon or Knuffle Bunny-- check them out, even if you’re not in children’s-picture-book-reading age. We read his books to the kids when they were younger and they still love to do the occasional read-through of his Elephant and Piggy books. In this activity book, he teaches how to draw many of the characters and do all kinds of artistic challenges and creative games. So fun. Rowan read one of his Moomin books and then I let them both play some iPad games -- because (and I write this about thirty minutes from our journey’s end), they are going to be pretty ragged by the time we finally get to our Oslo Airbnb. It has been a long four days, of lots of one-night stays and long drives and train journeys -- and they are probably going to get to bed super, duper late tonight. If they want some iPad now, well, iPad they will have.
Did I mention I have a penpal in Oslo who I have never met? She and I will get to meet tomorrow or Sunday! Yay! And Eric’s and my childhood friend Ryley lives there with her husband and kids and we’re looking forward to having a fun time with them on Sunday :) More soon!

『Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus!』
(鳩にバスの運転をさせないで!)
もうタイトルからして面白いですよね!
メインキャラクターであるPigeonくんが、あの手この手を使って「バスの運転をさせて!」と迫ってくるのに対し、読み手のみんなと一緒に
「NO!」

On Instagram a great illustrator is turning art into a game • Eurogamer.net
I spent some of yesterday morning trying to draw a decent – or at least not entirely terrible – picture of a door handle. I’ve had this door handle for ages, completely unattached to any kind of door. 20 years ago I found it somewhere and put it in my pocket, and since then – warning: I am boring – it’s become sort of a quietly magical object to me. I’ve kept it on bookshelves or in a funny box under the sofa in all of the houses I’ve lived in over the last two decades. I think if I ever moved and found that I’d lost it, I would be slightly winded, in a strange, silly way.
I’ve never tried to draw this thing before. And it turns out it’s quite hard. I’m trying to do a drawing of it where I capture the entire outline of the shape without moving my pencil off the page. It’s got to be an unbroken line. That’s hard enough. Then the job will be to move into the outline, as it were, and do all the detailing. Tricky! This, I have been told, is not really a task about drawing anyway. It’s a task about seeing.
This door handle thing is because of Quarantine Art Club, or maybe #quarantineartclub, which is the creation of Carson Ellis. Ellis is the writer and illustrator behind some truly glorious children’s books. Here’s a piece on Home, which is an absolute classic. Since we’ve all been locked down these last few weeks, she’s been using her Instagram account to set people little drawing challenges. I appreciate this isn’t strictly a game, but it seems game-adjacent at least. It’s about creativity and play.
And a little bit of learning. Each day you get a topic and some instructions. Draw a self-portrait. Draw an object using a single line. Draw the view out of a window. Sometimes, though, when I’m fumbling through the drawing, I learn a little something about the process of creating children’s books. When Ellis told us to do treasure maps, she also told us to draw the treasure and put it as a second image in the same post. Swiping between them would create what’s known in the children’s book trade as an “impactful page turn.” That was a new one on me, but it made a lot of sense. Every Tintin book – this is accurate, check it out for yourself – has a cliffhanger at the bottom of every page. You never really notice it in the books, since it’s a holdover from when they were serialised. Except maybe you do unconsciously get a little jolt from those cliffhangers – maybe they secretly keep you turning the pages. Impactful!
I love this stuff. A chance to learn, have a little doodle, and also see what other people are up to. When Ellis got us to draw butterflies, mine was an absolute botch, but other people did amazing things. Check this one out:
Ellis isn’t the only person doing this stuff – breaking down the read/write barriers of Instagram and the like to create a gamey kind of conversation Christina Tosi, a proper hero of mine, has been teaching people to make stuff from her double-dangerous Milk Bar Store recipe book. I love this book, but I’ve only done the very basics from it so far for competence reasons. Maybe that will change.
And over on YouTube, Mo Willems, the creator of the Pigeon books has been getting kids to doodle along at lunchtimes. Better yet, every now and then he goes through his archives. In the episode below you get to see the original art from Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. You also get a little insight into how children’s books are pitched.
youtube
Games are everywhere here, I think. Or rather, this all comes from the same space that games come from. Interactivity, yes, but also creativity, a glimpse of another world, and a bit of a sense of dialogue. Fantastic.

At-Home Activities For Kids
Here are 35+ At-Home Activities For Kids! These simple ideas are great for when you’re stuck at home due to illness, weather, or a break from school. Most can be modified for a wide range of ages.
Hi friends!
I’ve got more at home activities for kids to share with you today. Last week I shared my Indoor Activities for Kids and for the past two weeks I’ve been keeping a list of all the activities we’ve done while stuck at home. I thought I would round them up into a post so you can save it for easy reference. (Don’t forget I also have an Indoor Activities for Toddlers post!)
We’ve been using the Pre-Kindergarten Daily Schedule I created to help us come up with ideas for the day and then we’ve been working our way through the activities my five-year-old chooses, plus some extras for entertainment as needed.
There’s no right or wrong when it comes to this list. No rules on how many of them you need to do in a certain amount of time. Just browse the list for inspiration, modify as needed based on preferences, available supplies, etc and most importantly…have fun!
Without further adieu, here are some activities we’ve done over the past couple of weeks! (Check out my IG highlights to see us doing all of these things)
At-Home Activities For Kids
Do a tabata workout – we loved this Avengers Tabata. OR make up your own tabata, take turns picking movements and then do it together!
Check out Glenn Higgins Fitness on Youtube for tons of other workouts for kids!
Find all the letters of the alphabet on a walk or on things in your pantry. Have siblings race to see who can find them all first!
Play exercise Simon Says – give commands like “simon says do 3 push-ups, simon says run up and down the stairs, simon says jump on one foot 10 times”
Take a nature walk, then come home and learn about something. We heard a woodpecker on ours so we watched this video- Why Don’t Woodpeckers Heads Hurt? Or just go outside and look around with some binoculars!
Learn about something new on the SciShow Kids youtube channel.
Draw a blueprint for something and then try to build it. (We did this with a leprechaun trap)
Make muffins and learn about the difference between baking soda and baking powder with this easy experiment!
Draw shapes or simple images with a sharpie. Tape the paper to a window. Have the kids hold a blank piece of paper over top and trace.
Do a lunch doodle session with Mo Willems (author of Don’t Let the Pigeon + Elephant & Piggie)
Learn about a new animal via the Home Safari videos on The Cincinnati Zoo Facebook page.
Build a fort. We love The Ultimate Fort Builder from Lakeshore Learning. Or go old school and use couch cushions, pillows and sheets.
Try some Go Noodle videos to get moving (my kids like Raise the Roof, Yes I Want to Build a Snowman & Fabio’s Meatball Run).
Freeze tiny toys in ice cube trays or other containers and let the kids “free” them using a syringe and hot water.
Play with tongs. See how many dominos or other small objects you can pick up in 30 seconds, move small objects from one bowl to another across the room, etc.
Build with toothpicks. Set out some grapes, chopped sweet potatoes, marshmallows, playdough etc and toothpicks and let them build!
Watch this video of an elaborate chain reaction and then try to set up your own chain reaction or marble run.
Tape the outline of an airplane on the floor with painters tape so they can go on an imaginary trip.
Take a walk and build a story. Ask the kids to fill in the blanks as you make up a story – “There once was a bear named ______ and every day he went to work at _______, etc)
Make a placemat – punch out shapes, stick them on contact paper, write your name in the middle, stick a piece of construction paper on the back and then cover with another piece of contact paper.
Start reading a chapter book out loud to them or listen to an audiobook.
Build a house out of cards.
Repurpose an old canvas photo by covering it with butcher paper and painting on it. Then let your child hang it in their room!
Blow up a balloon and see how long you can keep it in the air using your hands, a spatula, a fly swatter etc.
Cut a picture frame out of cardboard, cover with construction paper and decorate it!
Learn how to make paper airplanes! Watch this video for a basic one or this video for two slightly more advanced versions! The Eagle in the second video is our favorite.
Make up a deck of cards workouts. Pick out a movement for each suit. Make it shorter for younger kids by only using Ace thru 5 for each suit or make it tougher by doing the whole deck of cards!
Make sock puppets or popsicle stick puppets.
Make sidewalk chalk paint! I mix 1/3 cup cornstarch with 2/3 cup water and a little washable paint….but you can use flour for cornstarch, food coloring instead of paint or even just crush up sidewalk chalk and mix with water
Pull out the kitchen scale, gather up some objects, guess the weight and then weigh them. Practice writing the names of the objects, the numbers for your guess, organizing them lightest to heaviest etc.
Make rainbow cupcakes. Use your favorite cupcake recipe, split the batter into bowls, color each one with food coloring, then layer the colored batter and bake!
Load up with wagon with siblings or weights and let your child pull it on a walk for some exercise.
Do a sidewalk workout. Have you child do one movement from one driveway to the next (or for 3-4 sidewalk squares) and then call out a new movement. Stop at each driveway to do squats, sprints etc. Some ideas for movements: run, hop on one foot, skip, run backwards, side shuffle, lunge, bear crawl, crab walk, etc.
Do a robot rubbing. Check out this post for details but basically you cut a robot out of a cereal box, glue it down and then do a crayon rubbing on paper.
Make homemade pizza – we used this recipe for whole wheat pizza crust and it was delicious!
Listen to a book or two on Storyline Online or at @Savewithstories on Instagram.
Have a jumping contest. Mark how far you can jump off two feet, one foot, running and backward then try to beat your previous attempt.
Hope that gives you some new ideas!
Enjoy! –Lindsay–

I’m bored, so why not?
Thank you Charlie @adeathnoteblog for reblogging the questions in a blank format.
1: when you have cereal, do you have more milk than cereal or more cereal than milk? Always more cereal than Milk. Lactose intolerant, less milk the better.
2: do you like the feeling of cold air on your cheeks on a wintery day? Yes, but only if it’s snowing big fat snowflakes.
3: what random objects do you use to bookmark your books? Receipts, Grocery Lists, and Candy Wrappers, lol
4: how do you take your coffee/tea?I like it very sweet, with one dollop of cream. Or just black hazelnut.
5: are you self-conscious of your smile? Yes. It’s very big, and I really dislike drawing attention to my mouth.
6: do you keep plants? No, Each time I try, I wind up killing it. Even the hearty “hard to kill” ones.
7: do you name your plants? Nope.
8: what artistic medium do you use to express your feelings? Magazine Collage, and music.
9: do you like singing/humming to yourself? Yes
10: do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach? I’m a right side sleeper.
11: what’s an inner joke you have with your friends? One Word. Macarena.
12: what’s your favorite planet? For reals? We’re supposed to have a favorite? Earth…I guess?
13: what’s something that made you smile today? Not a damn thing, actually. I haven’t laughed or giggled or chuckled, either. That’s unusual.
14: if you were to live with your best friend in an old flat in a big city, what would it look like? That depends on which best friend you’re talking about. Like, I actually don’t have one best friend.
15: go google a weird space fact and tell us what it is! *Do constellations look different other planets?* The planets of the Solar System do revolve around the same central body, but they do so on different orbits, so they will observe the stars from slightly different angles. This will make the constellations we see from here slightly different from the ones you see from there.
16: what’s your favorite pasta dish?Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo
17: what color do you really want to dye your hair? I’ve always wanted to go completely blonde, or smurf blue.
18: tell us about something dumb/funny you did that has since gone down in history between you and your friends and is always brought up. That fucking time I sat on a goddamned apple pie. It was a Christmas party, and I had excused myself to the porch to have a cigarette. I sat on a chair, and it occurred to me that it was warm, and didn’t pay it any mind. I don’t see well in the dark, and there was a towel on the seat, covering the pie, so I didn’t notice it until I got up. SO fucking embarrassing since I knew literally, two people, at this party.
19: do you keep a journal? what do you write/draw/ in it? I tend to doodle spirals, or repetitive lines, kind of like concentric circles. I write about how I’m feeling in that moment, the things that are randomly floating through y head, stuff I need to remember, grocery lists, phone numbers and appointments, and other random bits. I carry a hard covered spiral bound book or a children’s school notebook at all times with a pen.
20: what’s your favorite eye color? I really do enjoy all eye colors. No one in particular. Each eye is different, and I rather enjoy looking into them and noticing the variations. But I rarely do this.
21: talk about your favorite bag, the one that’s been to hell and back with you and that you love to pieces. I don’t have one in specific that I think of in these terms. I pitch any bag that carries a major association with. I do, however, have a green duffel bag that I’ve had since my first trip to the states with my first husband. That’s nearly 20 years old now.
22: are you a morning person? I can be. But I prefer waking in late morning.
23: what’s your favorite thing to do on lazy days where you have 0 obligations? Nap. Listen to soothing music. Watch the leaves moving in the trees. Curling up on the couch. Watching a favorite movie. Eat yummy food. And then nap some more.
24: is there someone out there you would trust with every single one of your secrets? My followers, of course. I haven’t given my tumblr address to anyone in my family, or my close friends. There’s actually only two people whom I’ve shared this site with that I know IRL. You’re all privy to my worst secrets.
25: what’s the weirdest place you’ve ever broken into? An old Jail? I dunno, breaking into something isn’t really my forte.
26: what are the shoes you’ve had for forever and wear with every single outfit? Nada. Crocs from the dollar store, hahaha. Not a fashonista at all, and gave up matching shoes before I had my second child.
27: what’s your favorite bubblegum flavor? Excel Green. Whatever flavor that is. Spearmint I think?
28: sunrise or sunset? Depends. If I’m with someone I love, Sunrise. If I’m real fucking down, Sunset.
29: what’s something really cute that one of your friends does and is totally endearing? Christ. This is a thing?! I dunno, they banter back with my sarcastic insults.
30: think of it: have you ever been truly scared? Yup.
31: what is your opinion of socks? do you like wearing weird socks? do you sleep with socks? do you confine yourself to white sock hell? really, just talk about socks. OMG. I’m a toe sock junkie. I prefer the fuzzy, soft kind of socks if the floors are cold. I like Toe socks because I can wear flip flops with them, and I call them my campfire socks. Less Mosquito bites if I wear those during an evening campfire. I have a lot of crazy patterned socks because my ex and the kids tend to steal them if they’re plainly colored.
32: tell us a story of something that happened to you after 3AM when you were with friends. Uhhh…I sobered up? No, really. There aren’t a whole lot of people I’ve stayed up all night with. It’s my time. It’s private.
33: what’s your fave pastry? Strudel.
34: tell us about the stuffed animal you kept as a kid. what is it called? what does it look like? do you still keep it? I have two stuffies I got as gifts as a kid. I don’t know why I keep them. There’s no association with them at all. Maybe because most of the things I had as a child were so often thrown away…Huh. I haven’t named them. Both are bears. One is on all fours, on is sitting on it’s backside. Now that I think of it, I really should just pitch them out.
35: do you like stationary and pretty pens and so on? do you use them often? I <3 comfortable, smooth writing pens. And when I find one, it stays with me until it goes dry, and then I miss it for months, and mourn it’s loss. I once had a pen I kept for seven years before it dried out, no joke. Stationary makes no diff to me at all.
36: which band’s sound would fit your mood right now? Umm. The Cranberries.
37: do you like keeping your room messy or clean? Clean. I feel good when my room is clean.
38: tell us about your pet peeves! I fucking hate wet towels on my bed. When people refer to the USA as “America” and not the United States, they aren’t the only goddamned country on this continent.
39: what color do you wear the most? Black. I love bright happy colors, but when I had my first child, my husband and mother in law insisted they help me build my wardrobe. It was all pastels or white & black, and a lot of khaki. So, I gave up my own sense of style. I wear a lot of black.
40: think of a piece of jewelry you own: what’s it’s story? does it have any meaning to you? I have a diamond and Ruby ring that my kinds’ dad gave me as an “I’m sorry” gift. He didn’t take my side in an argument with his parents. He didn’t agree with me.
41: what’s the last book you remember really, really loving? Mo Willems Don’t Let The Pigeon Books.
42: do you have a favorite coffee shop? describe it! Not at all.
43: who was the last person you gazed at the stars with? My youngest son.
44: when was the last time you remember feeling completely serene and at peace with everything? That happens so rarely I actually don’t recall.
45: do you trust your instincts a lot? Absolutely.
46: tell us the worst pun you can think of. No. I refuse to start punning.
47: what food do you think should be banned from the universe? I dunno, jalapenos? NO clue.
48: what was your biggest fear as a kid? is it the same today? The Dark, or being in the dark with a lit doorway. It’s not my biggest fear now, but it’s still up there.
49: do you like buying CDs and records? what was the last one you bought? I love buying CD’s from Thrift Shops. The last one I bought was a Better than Ezra album I haven’t listened to yet.
50: what’s an odd thing you collect? i try not to collect things, they tie you down, or somehow they get thrown out. When I notice I’m doing it, I give them away.
51: think of a person. what song do you associate with them? Calvin - Who’s thinkin about you now by Jason Mraz
52: what are your favorite memes of the year so far? Gawd, I dunno. I have no idea which ones are new and which ones aren’t. And I really don’t care.
53: have you ever watched the rocky horror picture show? Yes I have, and I didn’t get what the hype was all about. heathers? Never heard of it. beetlejuice? Yup, and I thoroughly enjoyed it’s creepy vibes. pulp fiction? yes, and identified way too much with it. what do you think of them? —–^
54: who’s the last person you saw with a true look of sadness on their face? My kids. They’re entitled.
55: what’s the most dramatic thing you’ve ever done to prove a point? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Oh man, there’s WAY too many of those things to list here.
56: what are some things you find endearing in people? Their imagination, and their sense of humor.
57: go listen to bohemian rhapsody. how did it make you feel? did you dramatically reenact the lyrics? yes, every time. I <3 this song.
58: who’s the wine mom and who’s the vodka aunt in your group of friends? why? This would indicate I have lady friends whom I might drink with. I don’t keep lady friends, the last time I did my ex slept with each one.
59: what’s your favorite myth? All of them
60: do you like poetry? what are some of your faves? I do like poetry, but writing it. I don’t have any favorite writers of poetry.
61: what’s the stupidest gift you’ve ever given? the stupidest one you’ve ever received? I’ve given condoms a few times. I’ve received them too.
62: do you drink juice in the morning? which kind?Nope. Water water water.
63: are you fussy about your books and music? do you keep them meticulously organized or kinda leave them be? Not at all. I usually just arrange my books by size, when I have them out.
64: what color is the sky where you are right now? Dark blue with a grey tinge because it’s cloudy and night.
65: is there anyone you haven’t seen in a long time who you’d love to hang out with? My childhood besties, Crystal & Jaime.
66: what would your ideal flower crown look like? Daises and clover.
67: how do gloomy days where the sky is dark and the world is misty make you feel? Introspective? Reflective?
68: what’s winter like where you live? Cold. And multiple feet/meters of snow
69: what are your favorite board games? Sorry, Pay Day, trivial Pursuit?
