today, i'm here to defend gen alpha (mostly)
1) skibidi toilet lore kinda slaps and if some of you haven't seen it and feel compelled to vilify gen alpha based on the fact that those are 30-seconds-long videos of heads in a toilet, i'll take that as a very orange red-flavoured flag, on the other hand i must point out that it is indeed a hidden propaganda (not sure what side it is favorable towards yet but it is) and i feel like we should make sure the little guys know that
2) you can make fun of them for being illiterate, but trust me, don't be surprised if they bite you back, they might not read much, but they love to read if they want to, in case they don't read though, they are the perfect viewers, it does not matter if they are bad at grammar if they can defeat you in a debate with relevant facts
3) i love that they take no shit and are genuinely not afraid to talk about stuff they don't like, but most of them i think still does not realize that people on the other side might have their own boundaries too (i'm still crying about being told that one flew over the cockoo's nest and newton's cradle are boring, for the record i was asked to explain them by almost a 7yo)
4) and this is not much of a praise but, if someone from older gen alpha reads this, you don't need pricey stuff on your skin, especially stuff that sound like your grandma has them in her bathroom, i have had the most problematic skin since i was like 13, and i tried so many stuff (including the ones certified to work) and by last year i was about to give up, but then i found out that all i ever needed was gentle cleanser and a light moisturizer both for like 10 euros, so please stop spending so much on pricey skincare and rather try over the years what works for you as your skin develops, because if your skin looks like trash after using drunk elephant, nobody's gonna think "omg, look they are using drunk elephant and their skin looks bad after using it", they will most likely think you are either lying about using it or that you are just a "faulty piece", find something that works and keeps your skin healthy so you can shine brighter than the trend,
and
5) (because i have a thing with odd numbers) i cannot wait for the trends they'll set up when the majority is older than 13 (i noticed that's where gen z started to peak so, i'm coming from here), the memes they create, isn't anyone excited, dammit???

Prędko, prędzej (Fast, faster)
By Hej!
youtube
I want to get to the city center
Take me to the centre
Where, with the rain
Mixes with the sun
Country derby, derby every day
Where black falls into the rainbow and rainbow into the black
Take me to God's lottery ticket outlets
To the central of ravens and crows
To lofts where there's singing and wine
To trailer park where they drink poverty
I want to get to the city center
Take a shortcut
To the athletes, to the braggarts
To the skeletons, light as a ghost
To the teenage Ikars
To the hooligans, of both genders
To the masters of arts and tricks
To the innocents to be slaughtered
Take me there fast, take me there faster
Snap you fingers now
Rub two fingers
It takes so long
So long as your life
You are like a dream
A nap - from which the world
Will wake up
And will continue to be
I want to get to the city center
Take me to the center
Where, with the rain
Mixes with the sun
Country derby, derby every day
Where black falls into the rainbow and rainbow into the black
I want to get to the city center
Take me to the center
Where the trams, the monument, the square
Where is a shop window clean as ice
I will see myself
Ja do centrum
Do centrum wieź
Gdzie ze słońcem
Miesza się deszcz
Derby kraju derby co dzień
Gdzie czerń w tęczę a tęcza w czerń
Do kolektur bożych mnie wieź
Do centrali kruków i wron
Do loftów gdzie wino śpiew
Do baraków gdzie piją biedę
Ja do centrum
Skrótem mnie wieź
Do atletów do samochwał
Do szkieletów lekkich jak duch
Do nastoletnich Ikarów
Do chuliganów obojga płci
Do magistrów sztuczek i sztuk
Do niewiniątek na rzeź
Wieź prędko prędzej mnie wieź
Pstryknij na raz
Potrzyj palce dwa
Tyle to trwa
Tyle życia masz
Jesteś jak sen
Drzemka z której świat
Obudzi się
I będzie trwał
Ja do centrum
Do centrum wieź
Gdzie ze słońcem
Miesza się deszcz
Derby kraju derby co dzień
Gdzie czerń w tęczę a tęcza w czerń
Ja do centrum do centrum wieź
Gdzie tramwaje pomnik i plac
Gdzie w witrynie czystej jak lód
Przemawiając siebie zobaczę
Pstryknij na raz
Potrzyj palce dwa
Tyle to trwa
Tyle życia masz
Jesteś jak sen
Drzemka z której świat
Obudzi się
I będzie trwał

twenty five minutes on public transport without 5g should be illegal (thanks optus) but it should especially be illegal when someone on the tram is having a very normal one out loud about their suicide attempts
nibling z spent the night in the hospital thanks to a virus that’s left her dehydrated and low blood sugar and they had to force her to drink because it was 0.1 off being low enough to just IV her, and she let everyone know about her displeasure about that
people not responding to emails for days on end has me as close to a panic attack as i’ve been since 2019, so that’s also fun
get in the bin, wednesday

// ENG
Courage is the reward of time So that I can walk the same path again There are ghosts dancing in the wind I saw me and my sun,
The path is straight, shining with the light of lamps Illuminating the cheerful faces of passers-by You pass discount stores, parks and lakes Looking at the clock - it's already that time,
It's winter and our favorite moment The city map is full of snow and tea There are stalls and a Ferris wheel for fun The view from there is always breathtaking
I rub my eyes, I can't contain my astonishment Your appearance in my eyes does not change I go back to the tram and hum the song sadly Nothing in this world can bring you back to me.
// PL
Odwaga od czasu jest nagrodą Bym mogła przejść ponownie tą samą drogą Tam jakby duchy na wietrze tańczące Widziałam mnie i moje słońce,
Ścieżka to prosta, światłem lamp świecąca Wesołe twarze przechodniów rozświetlająca Mijasz dyskonty, parki i jeziora Zerkając na zegarek- to już ta pora,
To zima i nasz moment ulubiony Śniegiem i herbatą plan miasta przepełniony Są stragany i diabelski młyn dla uciechy Widok z niego zawsze zapiera dechy
Oczy przecieram, nie okiełznam zadziwienia Postać twoja w mych oczach się nie zmienia Wracam do tramwaju piosenkę smutno nucić Nic na tym świecie nie jest w stanie mi Cię przywrócić.

Each participant will complete a short film inspired by the movement of haiku, a short poetic form that originated in Japan. What is the flow the 'instant' we find through our art form, whether film, poetry, etc? We will consider a few haiku from different cultures, ages, & languages and create haikus of our own or access our printouts. We will discuss what to each of us might be the 'syllable' of a filmic image and create short films considering time in a new way and inspired by haikus as an access point for making a poetic short film. All equipment and materials provided!
FIELDHOUSE FABRICATIONS: OPEN STUDIO Sunday, June 16: 1 - 4 PM Same as the weekly session but on the THIRD Sunday of every month, join us for an all-in Open Studio Make-A-Thon! Focusing on bookmaking and paper/fiber arts, Fieldhouse Fabrications continues the magic!

A haiku often features an image, or a pair of images, meant to depict the essence of a specific moment in time.”—Poetry Foundation Now in its fourth fabulous year, this workshop for poets and filmmakers, taps into the natural wonders of the season as our inspiration to write and share haikus and then turn them into experimental short films. Free event! To sign up and receive the Zoom link send an email with HAIKU in the subject line to [email protected]

Our third week in Prague
Our internship in Prague is coming to an end. In the blog, I am going to show you some more of what we did last weekend and this week. The Ice Hockey World Cup is currently underway and this happens to be organised in Prague. We went to a pub on Saturday and watched the game between Canada and Finland live on TV. That's well worth a look. Sunday we went boating on the Vltava in the afternoon and then went further into the city to explore it some more. On Monday, Fane & I had a day off. We then took the tram to different places to visit things. Tuesday was back to work. We had received the results of the survey, so we started processing them. On Wednesday, we then started working on the Powerpoint we had to present to the teachers today. This was an exercise because we have to do this for the boss of C9 tomorrow. Our colleague Nico had told us that there is a very nice park next to our company. We went here after work. We also visited the Jan Žižka z Trocnova statue. It was very big. After this, we went home and had something to eat at a local restaurant.

It’s competing with public transport in cities. It’s targeting millennials and gen z’s who can’t afford a taxi but don’t want to wait for the bus, tram of metro. Which means less ticket income for public transport, which means routes get cancelled, which means people who are old or disabled and rely on regular public transport are going to have a harder time moving through the city, etc. (Oh and then there’s the added problem of cycle lanes clogged with scooters, sidewalks clogged with parked scooters, and the huge safety hazard of a large amount of people with very limited scooter-driving experience going on a touristy city trip in a place like Amsterdam.)
But the phenomenon ‘Start off with a product/service far too cheap, run it at a loss for years until you have control of the market, then gradually hike up prices and reduce quality once your customer has no other options left’ does also happen in completely new markets.
I keep seeing people being shocked and bewildered about airbnb being so crappy to use now
and it’s giving me the impression not everyone knows that is by design- all of those “disrupter” startups operate exactly the same way. So let me lay it out:
First the company starts with an enormous amount of seed money, and they enter an established industry offering the same product but dirt cheap and with the feel of luxury. They operate at a loss for years. They offer their product at such a reduced rate that they literally cannot profit off of it. They rely on their seed money and investment from other wealthy friends to get by. They do this until the other established companies in the industry are on their knees and begging to be bought out. Once all of the competitors have either collapsed or been bought out, the new disrupter company is safe to jack up its prices and reduce services/perks to get to a level that is profitable. It might end up being much more expansive than the industry was to start with, because now that competitors are gone the disrupter business has more room to squeeze customers dry without fear they’ll go to another company instead. The “we’re shaking this industry up to bring high quality products direct to the consumer” pitch has nothing to do with consumers and is entirely about eliminating competitors, particularly long standing well established ones.
This is how uber works, airbnb, all of those. It’s the same game the laundry mat chain in my neighborhood who offers free drying is playing- driving out competition so they have more freedom to price things higher.
Individual consumers often don’t have the luxury to be so choosy about what companies they buy from, but just be aware going in and don’t get taken by surprise later on.
