Book give- away: Financial Feminist by Tori Dunlap!
Welcome back to another Bitch Nation book give-away!
Today I'm positively thrilled to announce that we're giving away a copy of Tori Dunlap's Financial Feminist, hot off the press from HarperCollins. Tori is the TikTok sensation behind Her First $100k and the Financial Feminist podcast. She has dedicated her career to helping folks (young women in particular) discover their power in the financial realm.
We've known Tori since way back, when she was but a wee marketing specialist just finding her way toward financial independence. Back then we were the big-timers and she was still building her brand. But uh... things have fucking changed! Kitty's partner describes our relationship with Tori as "two clownfish raising a shark." ACCURATE.
Here's us celebrating with Tori when we won our Plutus Awards at FinCon in 2018:
Tumblr media
We're giving away a hardcover copy of her new book (she fancy). We're still working on getting audiobook and ebook editions of books for reviews to make our give-aways more accessible. Here are the rules:
1. Go to our Patreon and comment. You do NOT have to be a patron! Say anything. Points if you make us laugh.
2. We'll choose a winner from among the people who commented. Completely random. We have the technology! The deadline is this Friday 3/31/23 at 5 p.m. Eastern time.
3. We'll announce the winner on our Patreon and send them the book! If necessary, we'll reach out for your address.
Because this is a public post, you don't have to be a patron to enter the give-away. But we sure would appreciate it if you kicked us a dollar or five! It takes many dollars to keep this machine running and every little bit helps.
If you miss out this time, don't worry! We get lots of opportunities to read and review books for the blog, and we love sharing the wealth with you, our beloved audience. So you'll definitely have another chance.
With that... comment away, bitchlings!

Review #29: Financial Feminist
Financial Feminist, by Tori Dunlap
From my TBR? Nope, read the day after discovering it.
First book of 2024 and my first book about financial education as well. Lately, I've been getting really into this sub-genre of YouTube channels and blogs about financial education content specifically directed at women. This book was recommended by Bitches Get Riches in one of their recent articles.
I picked it up expecting it to be something like Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Pérez but more specifically about discrimination in the workplace or the wage gap but it's actually an actionable guide to getting your finances together as a woman.
Now, I'm not an expert. This is, after all, the first book I've read about financial education. But I do think that someone with a bit more knowledge than I do would have found Financial Feminist to be pretty basic. I did too, at least for some chapters.
The book covers what your relationship with money should look like, how to get out of debt, how to budget, how to start investing, how to negotiate for a raise, how to be a feminist consumer (kind of) and more.
Considering that there are also many mini-essays by other (I assume) famous authors in the field, the book doesn't have the time to get into detail about any of these topics, giving us a bird view. That's fine for stuff like "how to budget" but not for the chapter about investing or ethical consumerism, something I would have really enjoy reading more about.
This book is at its best when it's explaining step-by-step how to get out of debt, create an emergency fund and set a budget — and even then, it assumes that the reader already has a high income. Jessica, the fake person we follow the financial journey of, earns 4k and budgets almost 1k for her fun money every month. In what world does the average reader of this book have 1k left after accounting for necessary spending and debt repayment
This book is also very US-centered and I'm not American. In the chapter Investing (my favorite) (since I know nothing on the subject) I had to leaf through a lot of talk of Roth IRA and 401k and you'll die in poverty if you don't start investing NOW. Useless to me, but at least it made me appreciate the social security in my country.
Other things that didn't pass the vibe check:
there are various mentions of how people of colour or LGBTQAI+ members or people with disabilities have it even worse than white women, which is not the same as actually discussing their challenges.
the author mentions Dave Ramsey disparagingly a bunch of times — like, we get it, he is Bad (and you are therefore Good).
lastly, the author used this book to self-promote her other products. Which, fair, I suppose. But also very annoying (you know when you are watching a video on YouTube when the Youtuber starts going off on a tangent that is so obviously a prelude to the inevitable "and that's why I use whatever product I'm supposed to be sponsoring". That's what some paragraphs felt like)
Verdict: This could be a good book for you if you know nothing about financial independence and want a light read. But if you want to save a few bucks, you can probably find the same information by scouring the author's blog.

When it comes to the working world, sometimes it pays to do your own thing. Starting your own business gives you the opportunity to use skills you’re passionate about, create boundaries between your life and job, and provide a means to give back to the community, whether it means donating time and money to your favorite causes or employing like-minded people.

I don't wanna accuse #FinancialFeminist of trying to launder the landlord economy but CNBC deciding to frame her choice to rent as a savvy business move rather than the obvious choice based on the cost of buying a home being inflated absurdly beyond belief certainly is A Choice

hola all 🥰 Amelia here again with a mixed fandom request, which I hope is okay to submit. I have a few pairings in different fandoms that I would very much like to fulfil on Discord. Yes, all of my writing will take place on Discord as I pretty much only use Tumblr to find partners and post gif sets these days. I'm over 30, reside the UK and work full time so some days are more active than others. I do love to get to know my partners and chat ooc but I always respect if my partner is not much of a chatter. I am looking for 21+ partners. I would like a decent paragraph in replies but it can be longer, I am just not looking for anything novella as that is just too time consuming for me right now. Below I will pop the fandoms and pairings, I will bold and ** the muse that I will be happy to write in the pairing.

[My Week in Review :D]
I completed another week at my teaching job! 🙏🏾 I’m slowly redefining what a “dream job” is. I love working in the educational field, and hope to help produce children TV programs in the future. This field, however, can be very thankless. One day, you’re excited about a new skill your children learned; next, you’re being scolded in a parent-teacher conference over a minor inconvenience. This concept discouraged me from working in education for the longest—until I realized something. My dream job supports me financially, doesn’t bleed into my personal life, and allows me to contribute to a larger picture. I’ve hated SO many jobs in the past because I was overworked, underpaid, and couldn’t differentiate between work-me and personal-me. Right now (despite the minor setbacks), I am somewhere that gives me purpose and allows me to support myself and my personal goals. I’ve come so far compared to where I was a year ago.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I dropped my ASL 1 course for the fall semester! I know, I’m an ASL Interpreting major. 😅 I’m working on an online degree while working full time as a Paraprofessional, so you can imagine the strict planning that’s needed. I live in a different time zone than my university, meaning a lot of my ASL assignments/tests/meetings were due while I worked. I did a good two weeks of stressing before I decided to drop it completely. I’m still studying ASL personally, so I’ll be prepped for the spring semester. ✌🏾
I’m rereading a new book! I’m on Financial Feminism by Tori Dunlap, because Lord knows I need to mend my financial health. 😭 I really enjoyed it the first time, so I’m taking notes this time on what pertains to my current situation. For those interested, it’s about reclaiming your finances in a patriarchal society. You get stories from numerous women about their experiences, how the patriarchy affects ALL of us, and what you can do to help yourself (and eventually, others).
Rise gamers—I revived my Nintendo Switch! 🎮 Disclaimer: I am a terrible gamer. In fact, I make a great spectator. I reopened Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and spend most of my time collecting stuff for my museum. I am also terrible at relaxing (which *suprisingly* aids in stress), so it’s be great for unwinding this week. My next mission is to get my shop set up. I just need 14 more iron nuggets!
