#ManuscriptMonday :
“Solomon takes advice from the animals”
from partial copy of Lights of Canopus (Anvar-i Suhayli) by Husayn Va`izi Kashifi (d. 1504-5), painting inscribed to Dhanu; Agra, Mughal India, c. 1595-1600.
Detached folio, ink, colours & gold on paper, Persian text in nasta`liq script with painting on recto.
Chester Beatty In 04.74
“Solomon was known for his great wisdom, and for his ability to speak with all creatures. One day, he had the opportunity to drink the water of life, and to live forever. Hesitating, he decided first to take advice from the animals and birds. They all gathered at his court, and discussed the great decision. The heron advised the king not to choose immortality. There was only enough water for one person, the bird said, so if Solomon were to drink it, then he would outlive everyone he loved.
This folio is from a copy of a highly-regarded Persian text, written by Husayn Va`izi Kashifi (d.1504-05), a preacher and scholar at the Timurid court in Herat (modern Afghanistan): <Lights of Canopus (Anvar-i Suhayli), a reworking of the animal fables Kalila and Dimna (Kalila wa Dimna)>. His patron was Amir Shaykh Suhayli, whose last name is punningly inserted into the new title. Writing in a sophisticated court style, Kashifi composed an updated version of these lively animal fables, which have a long transmission history going back to Persian, Arabic and Sanskrit texts. This manuscript was made in Mughal India, and features 96 paintings (mounted separately).”

Humayun's tomb in New Delhi was built by his widow, Bega Begum, who is also known by another name 'Haji Begum'. The name was given to her because of her pilgrimage to Mecca.
After the ascension of Akbar, it was expected that Bega Begum would go live with her stepson but instead, she chose to stay back in Delhi and build her husband's mausoleum. For this task, she had brought back masons and artisans from Arabia and a site was chosen to build the first example of a Mughal Persianate Garden tomb as a mausoleum. The design was exquisite - the first to combine elements of Central Asian architecture with Hindustani elements.

Golden Horde — Timurid Empire
Golden Horde was a male in my old designs, but I decided to change the gender into female. Basically there is no difference between male and female Golden Horde; she is a warrior and doesn’t care about anything except the prosperity and independence of Golden Horde. Effectively a tomboy as she doesn’t wear women clothes, and her braid is a single braid, that is, neither multiple braids of a single woman nor twin braids of a married woman. This fashion style is just what she’s decided on, and no one is able to make her do what she doesn’t want to do. As she is comfortable in more masculine clothes, many people refer to her as a dude, and she doesn’t care to correct them most of the time. No other reason than it just not being important to her.

Sword from the Mughal Empire dated to 1803 on display at the National War Museum in Edinburgh Castle, Scotland
This sword was presented to Colonel Sir John Macdonald by the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II. Colonel Macdonald was prominent in the victory of British Imperial Forces in the Second Anglo-Maratha War (1803 - 1805). An inscription records the presentation of the sword to Macdonald in the aftermath of the Battle of Laswari. This gift was tactical as it was one of the gifts made by Shah Alam II to re-establish an alliance with the British following his neutral stance in the conflict. The sword was bequethed to the National Museums of Scotland in 1944 by Macdonald's descendants.

i mentioned freid a little in this post. frêj, or فُرَيْج, furaij, means "liberation/relief from suffering."
mahad's name is arabic and means "one who is great." i'm totally pro-duke freid, even when he's being a stone cold bastard. he's dripped out and hot as hell and is an excellent complex character. the whole freid arc is impeccable, a stunning midway point to reset and explode your expectations.
so, freid is visually inspired by india during the mughal empire (a misnomer as mughal means mongol, and while the dynasty was persianised turkic, they weren't solely mongol) a multicultural empire in which the emperors were muslim. one such emperor was shah jahan, who commissioned the taj mahal as his wife's tomb. the taj mahal is a good example of what makes the era distinct, which is all of the islamic and central asian influence in the overall art and architecture while also clearly south asian. the building roofs in freid though do seem inspired by thai architecture, with the tall peaks and chofa. so they may be pulling from the yuan dynasty also.
amazing cinematography. this whole scene is very economical labour-wise, but the shots don't feel that way at all. they made enough clever, striking decisions in the imagery that it feels as natural, believable as any other.
my man genghis' trident and shiva's trishul
has anyone heard of aenon? it was a place of baptism. aenon is a hellenised (ancient greek) version of the semitic term for "spring" or "natural fountain", ayn, which is also a prefix used to denote places where water can be found.
the duke's mech is named chafaris, or spelled chafariz, a portuguese word meaning fountain, which comes from the arabic ṣihrīj, meaning water tank or cistern. the first ever arabic dictionary, "Kitāb al-ʿAyn " or "The Source" is using a specific definition of ayn— "a water source in the desert" ⛲
i've said it before and i'll say it again, escaflowne is a merging of eastern and western concepts and ideas following the silk road and the history of various occupations in the region; it is not as simple as "well it's europe with some japanese flair," at all. it's inspired by nepal and tibet, and because it's inspired by nepal and tibet, that includes the rich history of the place. mecha series are almost innately political. if you want to focus on portuguese, here: spanish, portuguese, and italian all took major contributions of art, architecture, and vocabulary from arabic, and all these europeans had an invasive presence in MENA and asia. the muslims of iberia were in portugal until the 1200s. muslim spain lasted from the 700s to 1492, the toledo school was established to translate from arabic into latin. mughal/timurid empire was from the 1500s to the 1800s. portuguese india was from the 1500s to the 1960s. basra (... basram?), a port city of iran, was under portuguese control from the 1500s to 1600s. hm... maybe we can kinda ballpark some things from this :^)
oh by the way! do these shapes look familiar to anyone?
no...? how about... this:
uh oh!
