Guys guys I'm watching SHERLOCKED: The musical and so far we have

Also Moriarty and his gay ass bodyguards, literally carried the entire show, I love them so fucking much.

So Fucking devastated they didn't include Miss Adler they could have fixed her tbh.

Can't believe highschoolers did a better adaptation than BBC Sherlock. Great job guys.

Ah, you might be right; I think I skimmed that entry's propaganda, and it was very specific to whatever series it was about without dropping the full series name, and I was like "Maybe this is Warrior Cats? I feel lazy, I'm not going to look heavily into it."

So, as a reminder: use the full but common name for the series! For example, Miraculous Ladybug (this seems to be the most common title despite being a shortened version), Warrior Cats, BBC Sherlock, etc. And check that you don't have a space after the title's entry, as that counts as a different entry than the title without the space when using the UNIQUE function in Google sheets (which is how I count the unique entries).

As for recommendations, this is hard because I watch a lot of trash, especially recently, but:

- You can never go wrong with Revolutionary Girl Utena. Note: this show (and start with the show, not the movie) has a lot of potentially triggering stuff, so check out those warnings before you start if you have any triggers at all. It uses the triggering stuff very well and to tell its story and explore its themes, not just for, like, titillation though. Indeed, it is, I would argue, necessary for the story and themes the show seeks to explore. It is legally free on Youtube in...I want to say 480p, and in better resolution on Crunchyroll and Funimation (yes, Funimation's site is still up; I find it superior to Crunchyroll's since it actually includes closed captions for dubs, although it doesn't include newer anime from after the two companies merged). Also, you want to watch the sub for this. I'm normally not one to say "the dub is bad" and stuff and be a purist about it—in fact I normally go to bat for dubs—but, uh... yeah, the dub is bad this time. Crispin Freeman and Dan Green are delightful in it though, I'll give it that.

- Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood uses its female characters well. Maybe it could be better, I've seen some people in these tournaments have beef with it, but it's a pretty perfectly told story, like solid A+, with a lot of really great female characters who I find very satisfying so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. This is on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and I believe Amazon Prime?

- Don't let the title fool you: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a fantastic show with great female characters who are complex and human, have compelling arcs, and are vital to the story. The relationship between Rebecca and Paula is central to the show and SO good, especially as the show goes on. The title is because it explores the trope of the crazy ex-girlfriend in a very humanizing way, and the title/opening song even mentions how the title is a sexist term, but it's a lot more nuanced than that. Also, it's a musical with very good original songs every episode. But check trigger warnings for this show too though. The show is streaming on Netflix last I checked.

- Uhh... maybe the first two seasons of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic? It's a kid's show, but it's good. I haven't seen it in years and years though, so I don't know if I can still fully vouch for it. I believe it is streaming on Netflix?

- Revue Starlight? I haven't thought about it heavily, but I had no beef watching it. This is streaming on HiDive.

- I've heard good things about Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, but I can't vouch for it personally. It's streaming on Crunchyroll.

Honestly, I know more imperfect shows that I'm satisfied with, like I give it a B+ to A- at least, but that I haven't thought heavily about than stuff where I'm like, "Oh, yeah, definitely, definitely, nothing I'd pick out there as a problem." For example, Baccano! is probably imperfect (as well as not streaming legally anywhere), but I don't remember being, like, struck by a bunch of problems there. So, I'm not the best for recs that I can give a 100% guarantee for.

Swanqueen

Regina and Emma were directly responsible for 13 year old me being comfortable admitting I liked girls. Regina Mills has been at the center of who I am for over a decade, and I don’t think I’ll ever let her go. These two are part of me, and I love them so much. Plus me and Emma share a birthday, and the show came out the day after my 13th birthday so it basically belonged to me (in my adolescent brain). They also are responsible for making me become obsessed with the enemies to friends to lovers dynamic haha (I am mentally unwell)

Mumbroom

This is my biggest ship for The Worst Witch 2017 fandom, I absolutely ADORE Hecate and I love her with Julie more than anything!!! It’s not as popular as some other ships in the fandom, but I kind of like that it’s just me and a few other people who ship it tbh. I like the dynamic of a witch dating a non magical, and I love mumbroom specifically because while Julie is Mildred’s actual mom, Hecate sort of becomes Mildred’s school mom while Millie attends Cackles Academy.

Mystrade

I think this ship started out as a bit of a crack ship??? Not just for me, but for the whole BBC Sherlock fandom really. But it very quickly became just as real as johnlock (Sherlock x John) and even though it was never quite as popular, is still my favourite BBC Sherlock ship. Mycroft has always been my fav character from the show, and I think he deserves happiness! Plus Greg is one of the most wholesome characters in the entire show, and even though he has very little scene interaction with Mycroft, they still somehow make so much sense.

First ship: Swanqueen & Snamione (these happened basically simultaneously). Is snamione embarrassing? Yes. Moving on now thanks

Last song: Bringin’ Back Christmas by Ryan Reynolds from the new movie musical Spirited 🫢 guys this is so embarrassing I’m sorry… I actually really enjoyed this movie tho💔

Last movie: Thunder Force (2021) with Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer!!! It’s so sososo good btw, I’ve seen it a bunch of times lol. I watched it a couple days ago with my mom, it’s such a funny movie! I’ve also watched The Addams Family & Addams Family Values in the last week, but those are total classics that I’ve also seen a million times before lol. I love movies!

Currently reading: The Ministry of Unladylike Activity by Robin Stevens! It’s not as good as the Murder Most Unladylike series but it’s still a good addition to the world she’s built in her previous series.

I'm a straightforward person. Very blunt and sarcastic. Very dry and dark humour. People either hate me or love me. Boys (and idk why) usually feel very intimidated by me. I love books and music. I'm family oriented even though we have a ton of issues. I like to cook, play the piano, play sports like Tae Kwon Do and Swimming. I hate basketball, though. Brokeback Mountain, Skyfall, The Imitation Game, The Matrix (the old one), Inception, Given, Sherlock Holmes (BBC), Little Women, Ocean's Eleven series, Spiderman: Into The Spider-Verse, Taare Zameen Par, 3 Idiots and Whiplash hold a special place in my heart though. I consider myself to be pretty boring when it comes to the media I consume, so my preferred genres when it comes to movies and books are young-adult, fantasy, and sci-fi. My favorite book is The Witcher trilogy, and I came from the video game franchise (bless CD Projekt Red for making the best game of all time). I'm kinda new to tumblr but since being here I've noticed a lot of love for British TV shows, especially BBC drama

The main ones I've seen mentioned are Sherlock, Merlin and Doctor Who and although those are great shows I wondered if there might be some others that non-natives (idk if that's the right phrase I'm tired) might not have heard about or had the opportunity to discover so here you go

List will be staggered because there's too much for one post so here's part 1

Dancing on the Edge (BBC, 2013)

I'd recommend for Merlin fans, because Angel Coulby and Anthony Head, and from what I remember Tom Hughes as Julian was quite Merlin-like or at least in a similar vein

It did have a crime/mystery element to it too so if you liked that about Sherlock give this a go

Anyway he was adorable

I watched it when it first came out because Angel Coulby and was disappointed with how much she is actually in it (forewarning- not much at all) but I enjoyed the story and the characters and the sets/costumes were great and now that I think about it I'm still kinda attatched to Julian what how did this happen it's been 7 years send help-

Chiwetel Ejiofor is very cool of course as Louis and his performance is generally great, as much as I love the more side characters like Julian, Carla and Stanley he really is what centres everything and makes it work I think

Also Carla bb you are amazing please stop doubting yourself ok someone hug her (and while you're at it give Wunmi Mosaku more roles why are you sleeping on her)

I remember the music being good too and there was one bit where they played in a bar (it's about Jazz btw) and it was really cool, can't remember why but will need to rewatch soon I think

I completely forgot Jenna Coleman was in this but I'm sure she was good so yeah there's that

Bonus: Matthew Goode (probably your new crush if you have a thing for British drama guys who look vaguely like Tom Hiddleston as quite a few people here seem to)

Atlantis (BBC, 2013)

Another 2013 drama but this one less of an intelligent serious historical drama vibe and more a magic, sword fighting and running around the woods in ineffective armour from weird CGI creatures vibe.

If that sounds like Merlin to you, well it did to us too when it first came out so everyone was kinda salty especially since it was the first 'big' drama to fill Merlin's primetime family spot which basically signalled it as a Merlin replacement trying to appeal to the same audience by doing a very similar thing but not as well

Like when the adverts came out people were like how dare you try to fill the Merlin-shaped hole in the schedule and also in my heart with this

Bring back Colin and Bradley you cowards

That said it wasn't a bad series at all, not amazing but mostly good, just not on the same level character and story wise as Merlin, in my opinion anyway

I mean I still watched every episode and was upset when it ended but c'mon it was just getting good

There are a couple of episodes I rewatch sort of regularly because they were pretty cool

If you liked Merlin I would recommend giving it a go, it has a kind of similar feel, magic, fun costumes and of course a lot of bromance. You don't have to think a lot when watching it (at least not until near the end I'm pretty sure) which can be nice when you just want to switch off and watch people run around in totally inappropriate sandals

Honestly it was good but I would have loved more focus on other characters, I didn't like Jason as much as I did Medusa or Medea (spinoff series please BBC they both deserved better)

Highlights:

Pythagoras. Just him. Doing Pythagoras stuff. Also won't spoil but his (slightly rushed) eventual romance was sweet and quite unusual at the time on a show like that (on BBC one at prime family viewing time) and I need to know more about that because we spent too much on Jason angst and not enough time on this small boi getting the love he deserves so if we could get some new fans in to do fanart or something that would be great I need closure

Ariadne's costumes, sass and eyebrows:

The force is strong with this one

I'm sure she was a great character but looking back I mainly remember her blue dresses and strong brows they just owned the scenes ok they should have been credited in the cast list

For real tho I hadn't seen Aiysha Hart in anything before but she was a strong lead

Amy Manson's Medea:

Seriously when she joined in season 2 things really kicked up a notch, hard to describe it but you'll see

I would watch a whole series about her

She's amazing

I only want good things for Medea

And Amy Manson

Medusa (played by Jemima Rooper) was also amazing and lovely and I found it quite a touching and different take on her story (to past me anyway). Again, I would have liked more focus and development on that instead of Jason's eughhh it's so hard to be a protagonist wait lemme punch a Minotaur in the face real quick but we can't have everything

Dracula (2020) - S01 E01 - The Rules of the Beast

It’s not October already, is it?!

The Beeb’s mini-series game has been really on point in the past few months or so, huh? Whilst I was seeing Zombieland 2 I had a trailer for ‘His Dark Materials’ which looked pretty epic and then I found out about their new version of A Christmas Carol whilst researching the musical one I just watched, spoiler for Christmas marathon 2020 on that BTW. Now, we have the latest in a long line of Dracula adaptations. Apparently there’s another on the way in the form of a Renfield movie directed by Dexter Fletcher.

I say Beeb but they’re making these in conjunction with others, HDM with HBO, Christmas Carol with FX and this with Netflix. Presumably this will lead to Dracula being available worldwide, I know the BBC output doesn’t usually travel outside of the confines of UK Netflix (unless you’re using VPNs) so it’s good that everyone will get to experience this.

This represents not only some unseasonal content for me, it’s also uncharacteristically fresh given that it only aired just a few days ago, with one episode airing each night across the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of January. I must say it’s really strange to be viewing content that you can list as 2020, we’re more used to things marked like 1940 in this house. I could have put it off until October I suppose but why not get in whilst it’s topical? Plus it’s made by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, they of Sherlock fame, so maybe that’s good for some Tumblr clicks. I know you guys love you some Sherlock. There’s also a documentary that aired alongside the series called ‘In Search of Dracula’ in which Gatiss looks at the history of the character so that should make for some interesting viewing too, much like his other looks at horror movies throughout the years that I’ve looked at previously.

Pretty much the first thing you see at the start is a fly, like right up close and personal as it effectively lands on the camera lens. These things are everywhere throughout the episode, not just around food or the rotting bodies that come up later, that would make sense. During the scenes at Dracula’s castle you see them landing on paintings or swarming around what is to be Jonathan Harker’s bed and I’m not sure what the symbolism is meant to be. It’s at that point that Dracula makes explicit reference to them, suggesting they are man’s companion to the end and that where there is flesh, there are flies. Flies are obviously attracted to rotting material so possibly this speaks to how we find Dracula initially, very old and haggard, or just to the history of bloodshed and murder that has existed in the castle over what must be hundreds of years at this point.

There is one moment very early on in which a fly lands on Harker’s eye and actually crawls inside his head, a silhouette of the insect can be seen passing over the back of his eye. Just a really creepy and unsettling visual to see only 3 minutes in.

It’s strange that something as simple as a fly triggered a thought in me that we must be about to meet either the Renfield or Harker character, albeit in a state I wasn’t expecting at this point. I guess the two Renfield performances in the original Universal Dracula and it’s Spanish equivalent just really stuck with me and made me instantly connect the two. Harker finds himself in a convent being interviewed by a pair of nuns about his experiences in Dracula’s castle and how he came to make his escape. He’s actually asked if he and Dracula had sex during this time which is an interesting question.

Putting aside all the potentially shipping and fanfiction that it might inspire, in a rational world that wouldn’t acknowledge the possibility of Dracula or vampires being real, some sort of STI might be a reasonable assumption to make on Harker’s rather sudden and drastic collapse in health. He’s got these scabs all over his face, darkened sunken in eyes, any sembelence of colour completely washed away...guy is pretty much looking like a ghoul or zombie at this point. The other vampires we see later on are more akin to what you expect zombies to be like in other movies, they are the undead after all but I guess vampires are normally portrayed differently, keeping more of their humanity and coming across almost sexy in a brooding, gothic way.

It can be a little jarring at times to go back and forth between the convent and the castle but I suppose that’s a little more in line with how the original novel played out in journal entries and the like. This mini-series approach has given the creators the chance to dedicate much of this feature length runtime to Harker’s story within the castle walls, his first meeting with Dracula and his gradual descent into the husk he’s become now. Going back to the Universal version, it seemed a very brief transition, Renfield arrives and pretty much overnight becomes the gibbering slave to his new master. Here though, Harker never quite reaches that level of insanity but you can see how he might; isolated throughout the day whilst Dracula sleeps and with no one else around, he has this compulsion to search the castle in search of answers for the weird things he’s been seeing.

This is a really cool sequence with Harker’s narration describing the twisting and turning nature of the castle’s construction, with every door he opens somehow leading to another two or three. The images will seemingly repeat with him entering one hallway, making his way through and then coming through the entrance again. It reinforces the maze like quality and the repetition he is going through but also creates a sense of mystery. Sometimes there will be a brief glimpse of a shadowy figure moving through a doorway in the background, is this just another past version of Harker to underline the previous point or are there other people or creatures in this labyrinth?

And whether it’s through exhaustion, the eventual attacks he suffers or just some possible mind altering trick of Dracula’s, there are times when Harker drifts in and out of consciousness. In one moment, he finds himself awakened over his work at a table as Dracula hovers over him, offering him a glass of wine. In a bleary eyed state, Harker comes to find Dracula suddenly looks almost rejuvenated, looking far younger than he had previously. It all gives proceedings a very nightmarish quality.

Dracula benefits also from being immensely more threatening here than I recall him being in the Universal version. Well, aside from the voice of his initial form that is. People will often imitate the Lugosi voice but here he sounds like the bloody Meerkat from the adverts.  Most of the most menacing moments come towards the end of this particular episode when his violent nature is truly unleashed but he seems very knowing and calculated early on, almost toying with Harker. It can come across a little cheesy at times because there is some very deliberate language choices that Harker himself is oblivious to but Dracula and we the audience know the true meaning behind. Like, Dracula suggesting that the locals lack ‘flavour’ to which Harker suggests he might mean ‘character’.

There is one frantic scene where Harker stumbles upon Dracula’s coffin and inadvertently awakens him, leading to Dracula setting upon him with bared fangs before the scene abruptly cuts away from the screams of Harker. It’s a very Christopher Lee-esque image, of this one in particular.

As the tides turn, Dracula’s strength and vigor increasing as Harker’s is drained, Dracula becomes a bit more blunt in revealing his motivations but still Harker remains defiant to the end which lends him more sympathy. There’s an almost tender moment when Dracula takes Harker to the ramparts of his castle, laying his enfeebled body in the light so that the morning sun might vanquish him whilst he watches from the shadows, speaking softly of how beautiful the sun is and how Harker should embrace death. As Harker begs to be spared, he does so with the promise that he will do everything within his power to stop Dracula.

With the later revelation about Mina, I did wonder if there would be some ongoing story arc about the struggle for Harker, his want to retain his humanity versus the growing urge to fulfil the desires of the vampire’s curse and his master. But, going by the ending, the struggle is already over. And boy, what an ending.

That’s a really great shot BTW, the rest of her face and pretty much the rest of the frame being in shadow except for her eyes, really lets you focus in on them and her expression as the reality of the situation sinks in.

It really is an exclamation point on what was a very brutal and bloody affair at times. The Christopher Lee reference earlier is quite apt as this is the kind of thing I would expect from those Hammer movies. I’ve always been hesitant to watch those as there’s so many, like 7 Frankenstein and 8 Dracula movies, so to experience something in that style but in a more condensed and standalone format is ideal.

I've been trying to learn Russian for over 2 years now, and wasn't able to take Russian again at school this semester bc of other graduation requirements. russian-language movies that i would recommend were made in ussr. FIRST OF ALL: Sherlock Holmes series. If you like Sherlock Holmes you’ll enjoy it.

one of my all time fav is War and Peace by Bondarchuk (1967). imo it’s the best adaptation of the books ever. yeah, it’s long and slow, but it is epic and must help you to get closer not only with the language but with the culture in general.

talking about modern russian cinema.. there are two kinds: shitty comedies and great but extremely depressing movies. so there is only one film that comes to my mind, it’s here - Питер FM (2006). hey, it’s about Saint Petersburg btw! you’ll love it

Masha and Medved is cute! haha :D i grew up on a soviet era cartoons and i have a feeling you would find them quite bizzare. but you could give it a try. as i can see that YT channel has lots of stuff with subtitles.

myself i learned english mostly by staying on the internet tbh and reading fanfiction (that’s why i still have problems with the tenses). watching shows/movies is a great help too. oh, maybe you could watch your favorite eng language series with russian voiceover? i remember when i was a student i also had BBC news on in the background constantly, just listening to muffled english speech all the time, getting used to it. 

i was extremely shy to speak in english at first but then i’ve been living in europe for a little while, dating a foreign person so it was the only way to communicate. helped to break the fear of talking out loud. in the end you realize you don’t have to worry that your accent/pronunciation sounds weird, you’re not native, people understand it, they’re not gonna mock you

i just wanna add if you’re struggling with speaking or writing or learning russian in general, don’t blame yourself - it is a difficult language. heck, lots of russians are far from being good at it. hope you’ll get to your goals. if you have any more questions - i’ll be here

the symphony is finished - but it’s just the beginning

was S4 predicted by the music of promotion clips??

Actually I just wanted to re-read one of my own metas because I remebered something I spotted in one of the promo clips, but now I have to bring it back and amplify new context....

Before series 4 aired I posted some music metas about the promo clips of Mark counting down 4 minutes (released after showing TAB on screen in december) here (X) and about the montage shown at the bafta event in december here (X)

In both of them I tried to analyse the clips on how they could predict something for series 4 by the music they used. Surprisingly they did indeed after all!!!

In the first meta I compared BBC Sherlock to a symphony, where just the fourth set was missing

Therefore it is good to know, that all classic symphonies are set in four movements as follows: 1. an opening sonata or allegro ( Allegro – fast, quickly, and bright) 2. a slow movement, such as adagio ( Adagio – slow and stately ) 3. a minuet or scherzo with trio ( “scherzo,” meaning “I joke,” ) 4. an allegro, rondo, or sonata (Allegro again)

Following that theory of the symphony you can see that the fourth movement (thus series 4 for s) again has to be “fast, quickly and bright”... and fast and quick S4 was indeed... but where is the bright??? Let’s come back to this later...

The great thing was, that in the clip I referred to, Mark talked about different things about Sherlock, but when it came to series 4 and what it would be like the whole scene was accompanied by the theme of the “Waters Gang” called “Lestrade - The movie” (listen here)!!!

This is in two ways very telling!!! First of all, the ‘subtext’ of this music is (short version): that it is all action packed and can’t be real.... hmmm, sounds familiar?? My assumptions back then:

So what does that tell us about S4E1? Will we get crimes that actually can’t be done? Will it be set up like a movie? Is there anybody who must be ‘caught in the act’? Is it all ‘scherzo’ = ‘a joke’??? I leave you to your deductions…

It turned out after watching S4 that it wasn’t only E1 where we could find crimes that actually couldn’t be done like that, that was set up like a movie (hello TFP... how many movies have been in there??) or someone who has to be caught in the act (Mary? Eurus?)

Second “feature of interest” is, that it is “Lestrade - The movie”!!!! There were great posts about speculations that whole series 4 could be “fake” and could be literally like “a movie” within a movie like this great one of @jenna221b and also this and this and probably many more! So does this confirm this theory? Did they predict something by choice of music? Who knows?? But I already came to that conclusion by analysing the music (see above)!! This definitely supports the rumors.... !!!

The second meta was a rather long analysis of the weird choice of music for the montage used at the BAFTA event. There I pointed to the used themes and their subtext and possible meaning in connection to the used clips. I came to this conclusion for what will happen after the ‘Miss Me’ clip at the end of TAB:

So if we follow this weird little piece of montage and this really weird choice and cut of music, I have to come to the conclusion that all of series 3 could find place in Sherlock’s mind! And at the point that he is ‘coming back’ (btw they were still landing, Sherlock is not really back at all = not really awake yet??) he will start solving the case of Moriarty and his own feelings for real

Sounds familiar too???

In my analysis then I concluded by the music that S3 maybe wasn’t real either, that Sherlock was waking up to solve the Moriarty case... but combining both of the metas and after having seen S4 now, I’m wondering if we are still in Sherlock’s mind after all!!!!

He WAS solving the case of Moriarty and he WAS solving the case of his own feelings but it was still as “movie-like” as S3 was as came out of the second meta!! They literally even used the same little initially not very important theme!! That is a deliberate choice!! This is no coincidence!!

But the conclusion that induced to write this meta was the same outcome of both of them!!! What was my prediction where all this would lead to??? In both metas I came to the same conclusion:

The score playing while Mark talking about episode 3!! It is the same score as during the pursuit through London in ASiP which ends in …. well you all know … one of our favourite scenes: the ultimate “in-the-stairway-of-221B-intimate-giggling-above-bed-post-coitus-shot”!!!!!

And as in the great symphonies they are going back to the beginning!!! And the beginning is the Allegro! And the Allegro is fast and quickly but also bright!! THIS will be our fourth movement!!!! This will be the ‘shattering climax’!!!!! We are going back to the beginning! We will get back all the intimacy and gaiety (word play, guys ;-)!!!) of ASiP! Back to the moment, when their relationship was free of all outside influences and threats, when they had fun together, only the two of them against the rest of the world and the only important question was : “Dinner?”

“Back to the beginning then!” Surprisingly I came to the very same conclusion with my other music meta on the Symphony of BBC Sherlock!!! Is this wishful thinking or does the music has to tell us something?? Is music important or is all this coincidence??

And what did we get in S4???

Most of you will say, this isn’t at all what they gave us!!! BUT listen to the music!! The theme playing here

is “the pursuit” from ASiP (listen here X) but then lovely, in perfect harmony and bright!! Remember the beginning, when we missed the bright part of the Allegro, the fourth movement??? Here it is!!! And above all it’s played by Sherlock on his violin (expressing feelings)!!! listen here (start about 29:39)

And where did the pursuit from ASiP lead to??? Exactly! This:

To make his whole thing round I’d like to add a quote from a recent radiotime interview of Mark and Steven about where Sherlock S5 could go:

Moffat also revealed to RadioTimes.com that he and Gatiss toyed with the idea of flashing the line “The Beginning” across the screen at the end of The Final Problem. But while it accords with the theme of the episode, he said that in the end they decided it would have been “too cheesy”. And, of course, it would have meant a few hundred more questions from the audience about series five...

(what do you think would be the questions the audience asked  ;-) ???)

This brings me to the conclusion, that the end of series 4 is actually just the beginning!! “back to the beginning then” (Sherlock TAB)!!

Maybe Sherlock so far was in a way like the last 3 Bond movies (John - we see you!)... in which the background of James Bond was revealed and we learned how he became the Bond we knew, only to carry on then with the story... a little weird twisted timeline....

And with BBC Sherlock we are just now at the point where all other Sherlock stories started ... ”back to the beginning then”  ... we will start with THIS shot above after the pursuit and John and Sherlock with Rosie back in 221B!

Sherlock: The Final Problem - rant

I am so glad I watched the last episode of Sherlock in the cinema in a great company as it gave me some resemblance of enjoyment of this shitty episode. It felt like I was watching a compilation of 'highlights' instead of a full episode, which would explain why there were so many plotholes and loose ends. I mean, it is kind of entertaining if you don't think much about what you are watching but the moment you start processing, it hits you with how absolutely dreadful it is. And even Mrs Hudson hoovering cannot save the mess it is. I mean, I am quite impressed that Moffat managed to combine every single one of his flaws as a writer into one episode, from prolonged exposition, leaps of logic, inability to let dead characters just go, and cliches... cliches everywhere.. oh, and things are true just because we say so - this must be my favourite one, why show that someone is clever when you can just say they are, or explain how this mind control thing works when you can just say it does. what a great way to tell a story! Oh dear...

Before I start the list of the thoughts that went through when watching the episode, I should really mention that I really liked the performances, especially Molly, Moriarty, Mycroft and johnlock. 

Despite the fact I sort of enjoyed watching it with a great audience, I still had some pretty “ranty” thoughts: 

PRE-SCREENING SECIAL

1. It’s all about Mary? Why? 

2. So when will the film start?

3. It had no information that I found remotely interesting, nothing about creation of Mary as the character, no comparison with the books, nothing about her relationship with John, Sherlock and others. How pointless!

SHERLOCK: THE FINAL PROBLEM

1. How are they doing the paintings crying blood? Oh, ok. I guess I’ll never know.

2. So he wasn’t properly shot. OK. But the psychologist + family were still dead somewhere in the cupboard or whatever of that house. How has Mycroft not been informed about dead bodies found in a place Sherlock was picked up from an episode earlier. He was watching his every step so this is just bizarre.

3. Oh, exposition. Great! It’s a sign of a truly wonderful storytelling when you have a character just sit and explain someone else’s backstory for 5 min.. Riveting. 

4. How can you completely not remember your sister? What sort of pathological family do you come from where you have so few memories of your sister that she can be completely erased? And your parents never explain to you why your sibling disappear or even reminisce about her after they thought she’s dead.

5. Love Mrs Hudson. So far the best part of the episode. 

6. So she wants to kill them. Fair enough. How did this bomb not succeed at least a little bit? How are they so unharmed but the explosion and the jump? BTW, have you ever seen how flammable hair with produce in it is? I have seen how quickly it disappears, so there is no way Sherlock keeps his lovely hair-do.  

7. That guard behind the prison boss is definitely Sherlock. Am I supposed to be able to tell? 

8. So if Mycroft is with them and he is the British government, how do they not have a clearance to just enter this prison?

9. She talks to people and they get reprogrammed. I can buy the mind manipulation, as I do think it is totally possible. They did something similar in the last Poirot, but what I am seeing here has no credibility. Did they actually research anything related before making this episode? 

10. I don’t think there is any glass there. I mean there is the writing so it must be there, but it just kind of looks like those glass-free spectacles used in films. 

11. I like the come back of the violin. I missed it. 

12. Oh, so there isn’t any glass there. I am not smarter than Sherlock. How did he not realize?! Even in his distracted state, he was always able to sense something was off. 

13. Moriarty? Oh, ok. He is dead. It is lovely to see him though, as always accompanied by some amazingly suitable music. Makes me think of the good old times. 

14. Is this one of the Saw films? 

15. The playing games thing worked way better the first time they did it in The Great Game episode. 

16. Poor Molly. Although, I can’t wait to see their meeting after this weird game is all done. 

17. I am reaching a point where I seriously do not care about the girl on the plane. And why is Sherlock not doing any clever stuff like in ALL the previous episodes. There are hardly any deductions at all. 

18. Mycroft is kind of obvious but makes this scene really good. I am appreciating his relationship with Sherlock more and more. Very logical, but not getting too emotional. Fits him well.

19. Why does she not want him to kill himself??? She wanted to kill them with the bomb in the apartment, so what’s the deal here?

20. So John found Redbeard’s bones. WAIT! He is in a well. In a freaking well and no one could find the dog, even after she started calling him a ‘drowned’ one. It’s a WELL! It’s not some sort of super secret place that will not be on any maps. I am so done with this episode. 

21. Oh, so he was a boy not a dog. This makes me care even less as it brings another level of the lack of logic to the whole event of his drowning. 

22. So SHE is the girl on the plane???? WTF? Who approved this stupid-ass idea? Maybe if she was alone on that plane and there were no other people there as it would make it a little stranger and give some indication that this may not be actually happening? Why would this be the reality she decided to create in her mind, with all the people, the pilot, the city? They have given me no basis for this to be a probable choice (showing her play with a plane is not enough to justify this whole picture).

23. So we are running out of the time allocated for the episode therefore the pacing has to go crazy. The solution to the riddle is done in seconds, the “reconciliation” and saving of John is another blink of an eye. If there was any way of maybe, I don’t know,  editing the film so that you have enough time to finish properly all you started. If only such things were possible.

24. The power of a hug. The worst is that this could have even been a decent plotline exploring the need for acceptance, the sense of loss and the power of reconciliation, but in the hands of an unskilled writer it is just poorly presented cheese platter. 

25. Why on earth is Mary still here? Let her go, Moffat, just let her go. We should all send BBC DVD discs with some random monologues on them. 

26. Wait, what? A compilation showing how rosy everything is at Baker Street. So no conclusion to the Molly thing I guess. And all the characters deserved so much better than this ending. 

27. I like the whole violin conversation. Wish it was attached to a better plot. 

28. I like the idea of 221B Baker Street being the place where desperate people can turn to.

I have feelings about the ode to joy and im going to dump them on you

At the time i am writing this part i have suffered through twenty two (22) hours of “ode to joy” repeated in my brains so you are gonna suffer with me now. Srsly, ask @madgronkish i kinda lost it around noon.. Anyways. First thought when i heard it was literally" theyre not going to fucking reunite them to THAT SONG??!?!“ Whilst i was wrong about sherlock driving the car…they still did that. Thanks mofftiss.

Ok now down to business. First off, DISCLAIMER, i am in no way qualified to do this? I dont know much about music and have like half an experience at writing meta? so..sorry in advance, maybe just look at this as inspiration and well..gay feelings bc i have enough of those to go around rn.

So.. for all of you who dont know, ode to joy (originally “freude, schöner götterfunken”) is part of beethoven’s 9th symphony, it is the first ever symphony to incorporate voices, the lyrics mostly come from schillers “Ode an die Freude” and the melody itself has been the european anthem since 1972 (1985 if you insist on EU).

Ok so lets have a quick look at the lyrics(and i really mean quick, these are my notes from this morning, not exactly coherent but enough to get a general idea of my feelings about this, we’ll get into more detail later) i also put both the english and german version bc i felt at some points things got lost in translation, but honestly i dont know what to do about that so yeah, if you speak german, good for you, if not and by the end if this youre not bored to death and still have questions dont hesitate to ask i will awkwardly but gladly try to elaborate (this applies not only to lyrics btw)

Well that was……….. kinda gay. Yeah yeah i know its just a queer reading no i dont believe it was intended to be gay by either beethoven or schiller (or was it?? Irdk) but. in the context of the show. which is rather what were looking at. Pretty damn gay, right?

Ok lets have a look at my absolute favourite lines first:

Well… i think we can all agree that society has, quite sternly indeed, divided holmes and watson, romantically. Homosexuality just simply wasnt a custom, or at least very frowned upon, mildly speaking. It is rather magical to watch this wrong being righted though, i should think. More specifically in bbc sherlock, the divide has come through a custom of not speaking to each other, and guess what?? Yeah hudders is friggin done with that bs these two are talking now!

And then…

Be embraced, you millions!/This kiss is for the whole world!

*shrieking* do i? Do i really need to talk about this? I think not. This just…. yeah. I mean really….. I would like to add at this point that, at least to my ears, embraced sounds like a rather tame option of translation. “Umschlungen”, to me personally conveys a certain vigour, almost as if the embrace might… idk.. come as a surprise to some extend? Take the air from some peoples lungs? Yeah dunno what that could be about……

If you still need more i guess i could just blubber some more about it all but tbh what is structure? so yeah, here we go, feel free to leave anytime i mean its already pretty gay and hurts my heart i wont blame you if you think 

•WE ARE NOW ENTERING THE REALM OF JOY… yep thats happening things are getting happy, please, god, let them actually. And this joy that we will feel when John and Sherlock ( finally) get together will mend all the wrong thats been done to those two, and us Holmes fans, during all these years of being kept apart by society and norms and customs, homophobia and heteronormativity. Were entering a sanctuary, we are literally save here!

•General message of schiller’s ode to joy is literally that HUMAN CONNECTIONS ARE THE CROWN OF HUMAN EXPERIENCE like wow yes thank you it is as if human connections were the stuff that…completes you as a human being. Say what? 

•Not only is this true for johnlock but also for our entire community, were bound together by the joy of this show, our joy will mend what heteronormativty destroyed, the joy of their kiss will unite us, we will embrace it and the joyfull gayness will embrace us! 

 •The fact that its literally such a groundbreaking piece of music. There have been symphonies over and over but this is new, this is different, he incorporated voices. Groundbreaking,earthshattering… u get it. Seriously if anyone who has even a slither of a clue about music wants to educate me on what the inclusion of voices could stand for please im begging enlighten me my brains too fried im already struggling to get this done(as you might be able to tell. I am so sorry)

 And now, onto some more shit i stumbled upon in the original poem that, sadly, didnt make it into the song but:
