During that I decided to fuck around and use some images and screenshots of Ghoul I had...they turned him into an anime waifu most of the time lol 😆 🤣😂. I have a couple more I couldn't fit on this post, so I'll post them on the next post. The next ones turned out pretty cool

Cass: Sorry, sorry, I tried to bring the food over quickly but got sidetracked by this guy who wouldn’t stop talking to me.

Jason (pauses eating his fries): What did he say?

Cass: A lot of weird stuff like I'm good wife material, that I could be his 'special maid' whatever that means and... "You know that dress you're wearing would look even better laying on the floor next to my bed." Gross, right guys?

Stephanie nodded while eating her burger. Jason silently seethed while squeezing his cup with rage. Stephanie reached over to his fry basket.

Stephanie (whispering): I'm just going to borrow a fry or two.

Cass sat down and started eating as Jason spotted the creep in question, his gaze directly fixed on Cass.

Cass: Anyways, he was super skeevy, but Bruce would be mad if I beat the crap out of him. He seems to view me as pathetic damsel.

Jason: Cass, is it the lanky blonde neckbeard over there by the Popeyes?

Jason pointed to the man in question, and Stephanie and Cass looked in his direction.

Stephanie (jokingly): Yup, that's a discord mod.

Cass: That's the guy, he tried to get my number-

Jason: We can continue this story in a minute. Be back in ten minutes.

Jason stood and walked over to the man.

Jason: Hey, you let’s talk.

The blonde man yelped upon seeing the tall man approach him, then took off running as Jason chased after him.

Jason: Where you running! Tell me what you said to my sister! Get back here!

Stephanie (staring at Jason’s tray of food after he's gone): These fries will get cold, I'll take care of that

Cass: You do that, I will go dea— Stop Jason from beating up that guy too badly.

Stephanie (smirking): You wanted your baby brother to beat him up?

Cass (half smile): Yes, that guy said I could be his waifu and tried to touch my arm. At least with Jason and me, he'll get the message.

Stephanie (nodding): I respect it.

Cass: Thanks, don’t eat my food while we're gone.

Cass took off running in the direction Jason chased the man. Stephanie shrugged and started eating Jason's fries.

Stephanie: Damn, all I got was an ex-boyfriend turned brother friend and Cluemaster. Maybe Tim could defend my honor... Plan for later.

We got Soren's first crit on this map! Btw, this stupid pirate map took me THREE tries. Once I lost Mist, and twice the houses were burnt down before I could get to them. Ugh. This was the first map that gave me any trouble.

And unfortunately, it wouldn't be the last.

The prisoner's map! I decided not to do the stealth thing, and just killed everybody. I think I took a little too long, though, so I didn't get much bonus exp from this map. But it's okay, because I now have Nephenee and Kieran, two more fruits to add to my basket. And Brom, too, of course. I love him, but I'm sorry, I will probably never use him. Armored knights and I don't get along too well.

Gosh, I absolutely love the dynamic between these two characters. I 100% believe that Kieran has a crush on Oscar, and that's why he took Oscar's discharge from the military so personally. One day, Kieran will realize why Oscar's squinty-eyed face makes his heart go all pitter-patter. Until then, I will fully enjoy getting these two to A rank.

Yeeeee, Nephenee!! I have said it before, and I will say it again. I love how there is just a series of chapters in early PoR where you get to recruit a new anime waifu each map. In any other FE game, these would be Ike's love interests. But not in this game! I just love how Ike collects this group of cute girls with fun, quirk personalities, and then remains platonic friends with all of them. And of all the "recruitable waifus", Nephenee is definitely my favorite. She's just too damn adorable.

I made a terrible error on this map, and accidentally put Mia within the boss's range. Thankfully, she survived with 1 HP, and I was not forced to redo this map. Whew!

It's Port Toha time! I love that Ranulf pays such close attention to Soren. Apparently, in the Japanese version, it's implied in this scene that Ranulf knows Soren's secret, which explains why Ranulf keeps such a close eye on him. I wonder if this is Ranulf's first time meeting someone like Soren. I really wish the game had expanded on this. I bet Ranulf and Soren would have some really interesting conversations. If they ever remake these games and add support convos to RD, I hope Soren and Ranulf have a support chain.

The fucking humor in this game is so great.

I don't even know what to say about this line, but man, does it make me feel a certain sort of way. Mackoya is not the only character who expresses this sentiment, but I do believe it is the first we see it, this idea that soldiers will become weak without "a steady diet of war". It's a key aspect of Ashnard's entire philosophy. I like how this completely contradicts with what Mist says later, about "Doesn't everybody want peace?" Because no, they clearly don't. There is no use for soldiers in a world without war, after all.

Someone much smarter than me could turn this into an entire thesis paper.

I respect Zihark 100%, but man, his introduction is wild. Entirely unprompted, he's just like "how many men do you want me to murder? Give me a number and I'll start hacking!" It's a shame I never use him, because I love him as a character. I do wish we got to learn more about his past, or had his past tie into the plot.

I always snort out loud at this line, because like, what steps are you taking, Nasir? There are two defining features of dragon laguz, which are the forehead markings and the pointed ears. You have decided to conceal neither of these things. You could easily hide your ears in your hair. Your hair is long enough. And what is the point of those things around your forehead? Could you not put some dangling gem or something to cover up your forehead marking?

I will accept that most beorc probably don't know what dragon laguz look like, but still. Nasir has taken exactly 0 steps in concealing his identity.

This might be my single favorite line from Ike. Gosh, he's so funny, I love him.

i need someone to write reinhard & hilda’s first time cuz its canonly the funniest shit ever. reinhard being confronted w his moral turning point when a survivor of the westerland incident confronts him. n its like ud think hed think of all his evils? nope. he thinks about how his dead waifu got murked as a result, gets drunk & boohoos. the blood of kircheis is the wine he spills on his hands💔 and hilda is like welll since kircheis isnt here. may as well give my boss sympathy pussy. its a grim commentary on gender bc this incident eventually spawns hilda being shafted into the kaiserin role in a way she wasnt or wouldnt be rly if kircheis still lived? its like ou man her arc was so much fun before this hilda being the androgynous/masc transgressor of gender roles for noble women in her society n reinhard being her companion in political subterfuge/sabotage of the nobility but bc kircheis is killed hilda has to take the emotional comfort feminized role sieg once occupied n becoming kaiserin is the culmination of that so reinhard& hilda’s relationship is tragic cuz they would be perfect friends but heteronormativity forces them to do this but the immediate moment & aftermath of the failsex is funny cuz its like. hilda is sick to her fucking stomach at giving him sympathy pussy and goes back home n has a breakdown ina shower. reinhard calls up his only married friend & is like shit wtf do i do, shows up w a bouquet& is like i dont wanna be like those NASTY goldenbaums! i must honor this woman& in our society that means MARRIAGE! with the cutest most hilarious anime blush & hilda’s dad is like oh well damn i thought reinhard was the virgin mary (the historical king carl he named). i wonder if these gay ass mfs was able to do it well (literally what he said, albeit poorly paraphrased). like at least yang getting engaged to frederica was cute. like i can believe yang + frederica genuinely like eachother somehow even if freddy’s later arc suffers from the similar struggles hilda’s arc does. but reinhard + hilda is literally a comedy of untold proportions. this isnt ship ‘hate’ i love how pitiful this arrangement is btw.

Between a fem Near and Fem mello who would be more popular?

Hmm idk if you meant in fandom or in canon but-!

I think fandom-wise a fem!Mello would probably be more popular, especially with a more western audience. People tend to like hot, fiery bombshell blondes (most) of the time + i think a fem!mello would have the sensual appeal that misa does. It would definitely be appealing to see more of a tough girl- especially because the other female characters are only really there to be used as pawns in light's game (aside from lidner and naomi- who did end up being tricked by him but damn if she didnt give him a time of it), and i think people would like the "take no shit" attitude. ... but it depends tho bc fandom is largely populated by a very particular annoying type of ("dudebro") fan, the type that hates female characters that are TOO loud or aggressive, the way Mello is. I find that a lot of male fans like Mello for his agression and more (stereotypically) masculine attitude (though mello is VERY queer with his croptops and leather and long hair), as well as being somewhat of an underdog- i have a feeling the same fans are the ones who'd despise the very same traits in a female counterpart.

Near would be split into three receptions. 1) hated even more feverishly- near was NOT generally liked by the fandom back then- i didnt get into DN until about... 2015-ish? But even then you could tell from the fics and fan reception more from the time that people did NOT like Near at all, and it was rare to find someone that did. I largely suspect this is because he's just very misunderstood- like being seen as emotionless/uncaring when he's just guarded, seen as cocky when hes just confident, seen as 'getting lucky' rather than credit being given to his intelligence. This would be a LOT worse if he was a girl- just look at Misa. Whilst yes, the series does unfortunately downplay her intelligence a lot and turns her into pretty much comedic relief for most of the last third, there are times you can see just how smart and calculating she can be also- that are frequently ignored because shes. Well. A girl. Same would go for fem!near- absolutely everything would be an asspull, people would hate her for being "the worse, girl version of L", and people would respond more negatively because if they already hated near for beating light to begin with, theyd hate even more for a GIRL to do it. 2) the people who'd like fem!near for the appeal of a cute female character- some fans just like cute anime girls and... tbh valid. Some people like characters less when theyre girls, some like them more! I do think early receptions to near might have been more positive if there was that moe factor (and yes near is moe as a boy too but yknow what i mean). She'd definitely be a cute waifu to a lot of people. 3) the people who like near pretty much the same, just that near is a girl now. Id definitely have found a fem!near interesting- the underdog aspect would have been even moreso, and id have loved to not only see light get his ass handed to him by a girl, but a female character who actually got the writing they deserved? Yes please!

I think both characters would be more well recieved now, the way their male counterparts are- especially near, who's much more well liked by this generation of fans than the previous one. I think people would pay them more attention, bc holy shit strong female characters who are morally grey (mello) and very neurodivergent-leaning (near but tbh mello too).

Now IN CANON i think things would be v interesting

Near might have a slightly more difficult time with her team and presenting a case- not the SPK, i genuinely dont think they'd have a problem being lead by a female lead, but i think near would definitely have a lot more problems (from external sources) in general when it came to being in an authoritative role, and would definitely see a lot more pushback when it came to decisions. So she'd let NO ONE outside the team think she was female- as far as everyone would be aware, 'N' would be a man, and the voice filters would reflect that, maybe even purposefully pitched down a little. Of course, Near is canonically voiced by a female VA anyway, so its not like her voice would change, just that she'd be more conscious of it. She'd also be aware that she could use that to her advantage, knowing Kira wouldn't be looking for a woman. This would continue when she succeeded L. As far as everyone would be aware, L would be a man- and this would benefit her greatly on field missions (if there ever were anyway), with people (if ever suspicious) assuming she'd be L's secretary at most.

Mello would definitely definitely use his- or, rather, her looks to her advantage. I think it would be a lot harder for her to climb the rungs of the mafia though, and she'd probably have to work a lot harder and rely a bit more on charming her way up than earning respect the way a man would. Still posing a threat, dont get me wrong, but she wouldn't be stupid to think that she'd ever earn the same level of respect as a man would (i mean its the mafia lets be real here idk much about the criminal underworld but i think its fair to say it's male-dominated and probably quite misogynistic). That probably makes it easier for her to gather intel on potential traitors and targets, though. But mello was never the head so much as a right hand man (at least to my knowledge feel free to correct me if im wrong), so that's probably a more palatable position to the other mafia members than if she had her eyes on the top.

Apparently the life goal of this R guy is to make every Edelgard fan look like scum by association by acting like a complete asshat wherever he goes. Nobody here leaves rude comments on That One Fic yet the literal moment you post a link to a fic you like this stalker goes there to "correct" the author as though he himself is totally not a fan of Cappys Wildly Incorrect Fanwank meta posts and fic.

That's what's gettin' me about this shit. He slams my ass for apparently "harassing" Cap'n about The Fic when I keep my critiques to this blog, discourage any and everyone from interacting with the fic via comments, never make any attempts to ever talk with Cap'n (and also tell others not to do that either), and give Cap'n the benefit of the doubt regarding the uhhh problematic aspects of his writing tendencies, but then he turns his merry ass around and bothers an author who has shit to do with anything. Damn near the second I say I like their fic, because he's about as subtle as an atom bomb.

And as far as I know, that's the only fic he did that shit with - which, oh so coincidentally, was the only one that focused on the BE. And was the only one to have Edelgard be written in an explicitly negative light (with the rest either not having/barely having Edelgard in it, or they as-of-now have nothing very negative regarding her). Because the second literally anyone at all says anything remotely mean to the poor little set of pixels that is Edelgard this dude froths at the mouth like a rabid dog and bites the head off whoever dared talk smack about his precious waifu.

And, it is either the case that he knew that he was bothering the author or the author was in fact bothered, because the comment he left isn't there anymore. Meaning either he deleted it once he got shit for it (from people who'd blocked him, meaning he is still dodging blocks) or the author did out of annoyance. Either way, wow, fuckin' shocker, it's almost like bein' given some unwanted, unprompted gospel about How Good Edelgard Is from some schmuck tryin' to """correct""" who they see as a poor misguided soul is annoying as fuck and extremely uncalled for. Especially for someone who makes it abundantly clear that they are not a fan of Edelgard and that their fic was not written for fans of Edelgard, in multiple blatant ways that can be seen before one even opens the fic itself.

He really is the encapsulation of everything bad about Edelgard's stanbase. He harasses people who don't like his waifu and then gets mad when people tell him he's being shitty, he constantly plays the victim when he gets called out for his shitty actions, he obsesses over debating people who have literally no interest in talking with him, he ban-evades constantly because he can't handle other people having boundaries and so crosses over them whenever he wants, and is just a self-important weirdo over a set of pixels that will literally never be real. And i live persona 3 Portable. i think they really give you a completely new perspective with Minako and the social link with Ryoji is fantastic, best one, they are so cute. I know a lot of people dislike Minako bc they say she completely negates the theme of Memento Mori, but I think she is just the flipside of the coin. Like that meme about "nothing in life matters" where one is a depressed emo (Minato) and thr other is a sunglasses-wearing party man (Minako). She does fit the theme but /differently/ and that's rhe whole point of it. That's why I long for Atlus to do that again, give us femc with a different perspective on the same theme!!!! And yes, I know it was easier in p3p bc the cutscenes were basically a narated slideshow, so it just needed a modelswap and some new social links but honestly it was so damn good QwQ

I guess thats also why I took kind of an issue with Kasumi. When she was shown there was the hope she might be a Femc, but no Atlus proceeds to be a male protag waifu game-

Tangent: the fact you can date Kawakami but not your bros Ryuji-protects-women-daily-Sakamoto or Yusuke who is just a sweet nice guy living his best artist life, is a crime and I am personally pissed about it. I really hope that future games do shake things up and dont go down this path further. You can't just give Ryuji a line that's basically "my place is by your side/right next to you" and NOT expect me to see a budding romance.

- wife is absolutely bored to be home alone all day and starts going to a housewife-club, her hubby isn't pleased at first bc it means she goes out but when he notices the changes at their home like better comfort food and her being in better mood in general, he starts to treat her a little bit better/reconsider his behaviour a bit

I absolutely adore this idea, I feel like, if I ever got the courage and motivation to write a full length book, this would be the plot. a lot could be done with husbands coworkers, readers housewife club, and their relationship growth! I'd love to write husband some more gentle moments-- from small affections and attempts at romance(maybe a little less murder..?) to prioritizing READERS needs(bedroom and otherwise)). Replying to The Mattress in its own post since, due to being blocked by him, I can't directly reblog him. I want to also make clear that this reply is neither a defense of Serena nor any condemnation of her. Just clarification stuff.

Her NPC self wasn’t a coordinator, but her personality was exactly the same as in the anime (the cute, clumsy type). Misty. Her NPC self was a tomboy and that was it, so it was up to the anime to expand on her personality, which got put into later games. Iris. Her NPC self has her anime personality without the pseudo-maturity/“what a kid!” aspect, which Iris gradually develops out of in the anime anyway. Only Dawn and Serena got altered in their personalities in the transition from game to anime, and both just so happen to be the most used for fanservice, funny that."

I'd beg to differ regarding May being exactly the same as her game counterpart. I definitely don't recall May having any distaste for Pokemon in the games, never mind only viewing them as tools to travel before having rather forced "development" out of it, unlike in the anime (sheesh, even Serena had a better reason to journey than May did, and literally only traveling at all due to Ash being in-region was HARDLY a good reason for Serena to travel to begin with). And I PLAYED RSE and was the male character (same gender as I am, after all), so I definitely would know. Actually, in some respects, May was arguably a forerunner for the messup Serena proved to be. And might as well add, May was definitely rivaling even Dawn and Serena regarding fanservice moments [heck, May was PARTICULARLY notorious for how she was made a 10 year old despite her BREAST SIZE making it implausible at best. And that's not even getting into how even Masamitsu Hidaka admitted May's entire POINT alongside Dawn was for fanservice]. Definitely agreed regarding the other characters, though (and on that subject, the fact that Misty's depiction in the games had most of her personality taken from the ANIME seems to point to just HOW popular Misty actually was there).

"Paragraph 2: She only “JUST STARTED HER JOURNEY” because of Ash. She literally was set on staying at home and practicing for a Ryhorn Racer career before that TV broadcast; she only decided to become a travelling trainer because the boy she has a blatant childhood crush on is in the region. Yeah, not a good reason to even start a journey at all. That said, even THAT was a slightly better reason than May's. At least Serena's rationale didn't outright spit on and disrespect a major core value of the games, unlike May (wasn't the whole "disliking Pokemon and seeing them as tools for her own aggrandizement" the kind of crap that the likes of Silver and Paul had? And last I checked they were meant to be depicted negatively. Well, Silver was anyways. Paul got mismanaged due to the director loving him).

To be fair, Ash DIDN'T really get much of a chance to actually ACT as a mentor to Misty's replacements (barring Iris, obviously) due to differing career goals, so he had his development short-changed there. I personally WOULDN'T mind seeing Ash actually mentoring ANY character, boy or girl, as long as we actually SEE that bit. We probably could have gotten that kind of development had they gone with their initial plan of May doing Gyms instead of randomly having her decide to do Pokemon Contests.

You think suddenly revealing a big childhood friendship and romance with a character Ash has never once remembered or mentioned in over 800 episodes before now is good writing? And if you honestly can’t see what’s wrong with giving a new character a pre-existing connection to Ash that will define their motivations and all their development, I have no words other than you are really deep in delusion here. Definitely not fond of the rather forced retcon in there (seriously, if they really wanted to do THAT kind of retcon, why not have Serena be something of a prodigy and meet Ash as a child, have them BOTH inspire each other as well? That would have done well to actually make both Anime and Game versions of Serena work out well).

read this old letsplay about this game I played and liked and omg it was so mean spirited. everyone involved had decided the game was trash and tried to convinve everyone else too. And idc if you hate a game but I just can't stand hypocrisy because these people spent every breath complaining about an anime game being anime while praising the previous entry which was equally anime. Someoone was claiming seriously that skeleton titty wasn't fanservice and tropes were baaaaad but also my fave girl who was psycho was a great chara. Anyway the sequel was better because the first one was soooo bland, the gameplay was barebones and only 4 characters got any proper focus. And it was good that the sequel addressed this and added events and extra shit. It only sucks because of the damn griiiiiiind. Seriously just let me promote my team already. And I don't know why everyone's complaining about the laugh track cause I played the original and it was fine; everyone did a good job tbh. Book 2 is done! And damn I forgot how good it is.

Okay before someone lights me up for my next statement, Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn are some of the best video games written. Period. Not even on the same playing field as other Fire Emblem games in my opinion. And I think one of the reasons why book 2 of Heroes works as well as it does is because it’s taking notes from Path of Radiance. And guys, it’s so god damn fun. Surtr is such a good villain, Fjorm deserves to commit some murder as a treat, and every second Helbindi is on screen is absolute gold.

Hold on I gotta go off about Helbindi actually. He’s a type of character I wish we got more of in FEH as a whole. He purely has his own story going on and never has a real conversation with our protagonists. And it’s a perfect decision. The world feels so much more lived in as a result and it makes his situation all the more tragic. They could have helped him, but why would that conversation ever happen? It’s amazing. Not mentioning that every word out of his mouth is pure gold. Favorite line of the entire book is from him— “I know that you were hoping to be slaughtered by the best, so I crawled out of the depths of hell, just for you!” Like man. MAN. Fucking get it Helbindi.

If his chapter 12 part 3 conversation with Laegjarn (where she breaks the news that his sister is dead) was voice acted and/or given more expressive visuals, it might actually get me! Perhaps make me feel a feeling. Because it’s genuinely heartbreaking! We don’t need the on screen build up of his relationship with his sister for it to be so either. Between his actions and the narrative parallels drawn between himself and Laegjarn, we know. Man it’s really good.

You know who else was fun this book? Anna! Like genuinely! Trusting this lady with my life. She’s got a few scenes that become REALLY interesting in retrospect. First and foremost being, woah book 8 foreshadowing? In my book 2? Fascinating! If you can recall, in book 8 we learn that the Order’s initial purpose was a lot more shady. As in, might have been trained to do political assassinations type of shady. Anna specifically worked for, trains for, and might have actively been in charge while this was still the case. And there’s a line in book 2 chapter 5 part 1 where she says verbatim, “There’s a reason why I’m the commander! If I know one thing, it’s how to sneak a squad through enemy territory…” It is then this skill that makes the Order such a menace within a Múspell occupied Nilf. Despite their smaller size and disadvantage, finding and catching up to them is a genuine issue that Laegjarn has to put a lot of thought into effectively countering. She even likens it to a hunt. We can then assume this propensity for stealth is key to the Order’s survival against a majority of their encounters with divine forces. The problem is that I genuinely don’t recall if this ever gets highlighted again past this point. I don’t think it does, but man it would be so fun if it was. More build up to this reveal please it would be so neat. Anna backstory ever so slowly being ringed out of her over literal years would drive me insane in the best possible way.

I also enjoyed Fjorm a lot more than I thought I would? In recent years, she’s treated more like an anime waifu, for lack of a better way of putting it. And I’m personally not the biggest fan of it. But it turns out she is getting a bit of a Lucina treatment— it’s as if after Grima was defeated, Awakening kept going and Lucina, with her driving motivation gone, was given an arc about crushing really hard on Robin. It’s not a good follow up, but Fjorm in her original story and context is pretty fun! Like her a lot actually! I am so down with helping this girl kill Surtr. Sign me up bestie. Let’s go get you some vengeance.

I also love how her vengeance is framed? This very well might be some left over Fates trauma talking, but it bothers me when the anime war crimes game makes a big deal about how killing people is wrong. Of course it is and it theoretically could be an interesting thing to talk about. But, in order to convince an audience that our protagonists are moral paragons that can do no wrong, there’s sometimes an insistence that no one here is killing anybody. In the anime medieval fantasy war game. I vaguely remember feh itself trying to do something similar at some point in the future, but not with Fjorm. People are dying horribly in this book and Fjorm is killing people. Her quest to kill Surtr comes from a deeply wrathful place and is noticeably self destructive, but no one tries to talk her down. How could they? For multiple reasons, they simply cannot. The most that can be done is Sharena insisting that Fjorm rest before she keels over. Reading it now, I cannot shake the feeling that if there is a world where Fjorm cannot kill Surtr yet somehow survived, she becomes a problem. Hell, she probably becomes a similar monster to Líf.

…oh shit is that point? Oh damn I think that’s the point.

Man book 2 is good.

Truly the only thing dragging this down is the racial undertones, which do make me extremely uncomfortable! It’s the major reason why I don��t revisit book 2 more. Surtr and Helbindi’s designs and characters are fucking fantastic, but god damnit guys the stereotype being propagated here is really not good! Hell, while we’re here, Bruno is also part of this. It’s not screaming it on a visual level like the other two, but come on, the only dark skinned character in the cast at the time is also the one has a curse on a his blood that makes him violent? That’s not cute! Don’t do that!

It’s not really the hardest fix either. Sure, the best case scenario would have been getting a second pair of eyes on that before that was an inextricable part of the final product. But, be honest, would anything really be lost if Nifl’s royal family also had some melanin? Or even some of our main cast? It would mellow out those undertones, that’s for sure. Also darker skinned Hríd and Gunnthrá could be so fucking pretty you guys oh my god. Can you see my vision? The second I have some free time I am drawing that.

Anyway, the consensus is that book 2 is really good and should be way higher on my FEH book rankings. Definitely got some flaws, but it is a great ride from beginning to end.

Um. So. I may have gotten stressed and started transcribing FEH’s story mode. Might currently have all of book 1 written down. Perhaps a third of the way into book 2.

This started as a way to have the preface chapters handy since they’re not replayable. But then I looked on the FE wiki and saw that they only have a small fraction of the chapters written down. And that scared me, because means that my hyperfixation has a nonzero chance of becoming lost media if the app were to go down one day. So now I have all of book 1 in my back pocket, including the preface, two intermissions, and the two relevant xenologues. Once I’m further along and have a few more books accounted for, I have no problem making the document public. But until then I encourage others to also write some of its content down. Just in case, you know? Especially those prologues and Tempest Trials.

With that PSA out of the way, omg book 1 hi!!!! It’s been forever!!!!

Apparently, I haven’t reread book 1 in its entirety since I first played Heroes! I’ve gone back to look for specific scenes and replayed the levels on harder difficulties (self inflicted or otherwise), but I haven’t done a thorough second pass before. Which was news to me, because that meant I was consistently blindsided by scenes and characterization that I completely forgot about! Did any of you remember that Zacharias was apparently Alfonse and Sharena’s childhood friend? I didn’t! But there it is, chapter 7 part 5 after battle cutscene, Anna specifies that aspect of their relationship. That’s crazy! How does the timeline even line up on that??? If he spent his childhood in Askr, how did he manage to have a strong relationship with his significantly younger sister? How did he find himself rubbing shoulders with enemy royalty? Could he have inadvertently met Peony? I’m not changing my takes on his character, but I would love to know.

Speaking of character, apparently seven years spent writing a character naturally changes how they sound! Who would have thought. It made seeing the book 1 versions of our Askr trio a little jarring, but in an oddly nostalgic way! This was a phase of the game where the story, its characters, and its world existed with the singular purpose of introducing new players to what Heroes was trying to do. Which was, at the time, being a cute yet unobtrusive gacha app tie in with simplified FE mechanics to give you that gameplay fix on the go. And to its credit, it does do a good job of this! It ain’t a masterpiece, but I was charmed by its emphasis on showing off all these cool characters you could go summon. Ryoma gets to talk for a few lines and you are going to look at his very pretty art! But that meant that the world and characters of Zenith take a bit of a backseat. They’re not here to be too complicated. The Order of Heroes are the friendly faces that go on adventures and meet these heroes that you can summon for only $19.99. But we all know where the game and its story is going to go from here. That emphasis is going to wane as FEH grows into its own identity (and also earn IntSys over $1 billion worldwide).

But that’s a later development. Before that fundamental shift is where book 1 sits. It’s in this fascinating position where these characters have yet to solidify into their recognizable forms. And if you don’t believe me, chapter 9 part 4 has a scene where Sharena and Alfonse’s roles have reversed. For once, Sharena is posing the cautionary “what if the information we are getting from this total stranger is a trap?”, to which Alfonse responds “nah I’m getting a vibe that it’s fine and that we should believe him whole heartedly.” Like??? Huh???? It’s Bruno, but still, that’s hilarious! Alfonse’s pragmatism bordering on paranoia hasn’t established itself as a massive driver of his character yet. Nor has Sharena’s role as trusting emotional core and moral compass of the group. It was very easy to borderline Mandela Effect it into being there, but it isn’t. Not quite. There are hints, sure, but once again these characters were initially made to be simple at the time. The depth doesn’t quite exist yet.

It wasn’t until I was writing this very paragraph that it finally dawned on me why the Askr trio voice lines, especially Alfonse’s lines, are such a big deal. That's where Alfonse’s character arc with trusting Kiran resides. There's the pragmatism we know and love! It’s not super present in the text of book 1, but the depth of these characters can be found in the voice lines you unlock from building them and earning the crown jewel level 40 conversation. That’s where Alfonse’s arc with his self isolating behaviors crumbles at that sight of one silly tactician. That’s where Sharena finally wins a fight against her own loneliness by forming genuine friendship with this stranger form a strange land, who is appreciative of her loud eccentricities. That’s where Anna apologizes about her initial underestimation of Kiran, thanks them for being more reliable than she could have ever hoped for, and swears that whatever hell may come their way, they’re in this together. The books themselves don’t seem to reflect this characterization until book 2, where they overall act more in accordance with the rest of the narrative. It’s as if they're taking from the voiced lines’ example and extrapolating more on the story they imply.

The one standing in slight contrast to all this is Bruno, as he's the most interesting character in book 1. It's blaringly obvious he's Zacharias, but it's genuinely amusing how deep he is in his own gaslighting. He can't manipulate, mansplain, manwhore his way out of this one folks, but he's certainly going to try! His lies aren't even that good, but it honestly contributes to how at wits end he is. Like, sure honey, I totally believe you that you just killed Zacharias. I bet he has an eight-pack too. Just take a nap for two minutes. But then everyone believes him because our protagonists have yet meld their group braincell. Overall, an amusing time.

I don't have a particular point I'm trying to make with this one. Just having a fun and pointing out the things I've noticed. Might give a little update for every book I complete. However many that will be.

Characters, body language, and (maybe) my favourite scene in the Halo series

hi everyone I’m back on my bullshit and infodumping about Halo again!! (Well, I say “again”. This may be the first time I’ve posted something like this to tumblr. In which case, ignore the ‘again’ part lmao)

So! Uuuuh there’s this scene in Halo 3 where Master Chief (you) rescues Cortana (your AI companion) from this hellhole-type location. You got separated at the end of the last game, and you’ve spend most of this game apart (and also you just fought through the hardest level in the dang game to get to her)

And yeah, it’s a bit goofy out of motion - green tin man rescues his vocaloid waifu, more at 11 - but bare with me here

There’s something real soft to me about the way Chief, who by this point is a legendary hero who’s saved the human race multiple times, gets down on his knees to get closer to Cortana and be more on her level. Considering the context (she’s been trapped here for a while, and the implications are that she’s had a REAL bad time of it), it’s this incredibly tender gesture from a guy who mostly just spends his days turning aliens into a fine pink mist.

The dialogue is really slick too - the talk of promises is a callback to what they say to each other at the of the previous game, when they get separated. Chief says something to the effect of “I’ll come back for you” to Cortana, and Cortana responds with: “Don’t make a girl a promise if you know you can’t keep it.” In the Halo 3 scene, Chief is almost bragging that he’s right - but it’s in a soft and vindicating way, countering Cortana’s despair that there may not be enough of her left to rescue. Like, “I’m here. You can trust me. You can rely on me. I said, didn’t I?”

And then, when Cortana hears his voice

she literally lights up

There are more callbacks in Cortana’s dialogue here - in a flashback/monologue at the start of the game, it’s revealed that she picked Chief as a partner because he was ‘lucky’ (”You had something no-one else had... luck”).

Chief then replies with his own callback to that opening monologue - a one-two punch in the feels that demonstrates how in snyc they are with each other.

(Also! The way he kinda dips his head and moves towards her as he says it? It creates that sense of when you’re focusing in on someone because they have your full attention. You know what I mean?)

There’s also the fact that when Cortana stands back up, Chief doesn’t immediately do the same; instead, there’s this brief moment where he just remains kneeling.

I wouldn’t say he’s in awe, or subservient, or anything, but it’s such a deep sign of respect - especially considering (and I’m reiterating here) that the Master Chief is essentially a god amongst men who blows shit up and kills aliens by the thousand and is the big saviour of the galaxy.

Then, when Cortana asks him if he has an escape plan, his response is: “Thought I’d try shooting my way out. Mix things up a little.”

Aside from being a pretty good deadpan joke from an FPS player character, it’s also?? so meaningful?? Because in Halo 1 and ESPECIALLY Halo 2 chief has this kinda underplayed, snarky sense of humour. He’s a man of few words but he DOES have words and he’s also capable of being funny every once in a while. But in Halo 3 (the game he mostly spends without Cortana, I might add), hes pretty damn deadpan, focusing on just getting the job done - and then, the second he’s back with her, he cracks a joke!!

OH, and there’s this other big where, after she gets back into his head via an AI chip, she tells him:

“Just keep your head down... there’s two of us in here now, remember?”

And that’s a callback to Halo 1, because in that game - after you get Cortana for what’s implied to be the first time, or at least the first time in a long while - pretty much the first thing she says to you after you get shot at is “Hey! Keep your head down! There’s two of us in here now!”

But when she says it in Halo 3, her voice is much softer, and it’s clear that rather than a direct statement, it’s this warm callback to their history mixed with her own relief that she’s back, she’s here again.

TLDR, I fucking love the mesh between the back-and-forth dialogue and these characters’ obvious care for one another, and the fact that he’s there to rescue her and he’s on his knees. like. it’s a wonderful little hybrid of olde-type chivalry and conventional friendship? Like the princess and the knight are also best friends?? And I just think that’s neat, and that they convey it so well in a 70-second cutscene.

“Tenko... that was fourteen years ago. Don’t you think it’s a little late to do that?” You said, rolling your eyes before kissing his cheek, “Be nice Tenko, I’ll be back in half an hour, got it?”

“Yeah sure.” He replied, though you don’t think he actually listened.

“Where are you going? Can I go?” Your son asked, finally coming out of his room at the sound of the apartment door opening. “I don’t want to be stuck here with dad alone.”

You nodded your head as the console Shigaraki had been playing on turned off. “I wanna go too then.” He said, working his way to the counter where his discarded artist gloves were. Your son rolled his eyes before walking out the door to start his descent to the ground floor of the apartment building.

“I wanna go home.” Shigaraki whined, gripping your hand harder before looking at you with puppy eyes, “please..?”

“Baby it hasn’t even been ten minutes, I told you it would take longer. Why is it that a fourteen year old has more patience than you?” You asked smirking, mainly thinking of your reply as a joke. “Can you answer that Tenko?” You asked before pushing his shoulder.

He rolled his eyes and glared at your son, who was browsing through piercings for his apparently living, breathing lover and not some made up waifu. He ran up to you before slipping a silver nose ring into Shigaraki’s hand, almost as if he wanted approval.

“You could just steal it y’know.”

“You aren’t exactly a villain anymore, asshole. Why would I do that in the first place?” Your son spat, showing the piercing to you instead.

“Y/N you’re sure we can’t just drop him off at the nearest orphanage?” Shigaraki asked, earning a fake sob from your child. You didn’t respond for a minute, which made your son question if you would or not.

“Tenko, just wait in the car then, I don’t want to deal with your sly comments this early.” You said, your tone irritated and slightly agitated.

Your husband sighed in defeat, walking over to exit the store, stopping just before he walked outside to glare at your child. In response, your son stuck his tongue out before cursing at him. If you were being honest, the whole scene was quiet entertaining.
