Being that it's December 7th, today is a good day to talk about one of the first people to witness the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor - a civilian flight instructor who was taking a student on a practice flight. A Japanese pilot fired on the plane, and it was only the teacher's quick thinking that saved both of them from becoming casualties.

Her name was Cornelia Clark Fort, and she later went on to become a member of the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron, a precursor to the Women's Air Service Pilots. She died in 1943 during a flight accident. You can read about her here, here, and here.

13. L-Corp

Kara's in such a rush, she forgets what part of town she's heading to.

It's not until she's crossing 6th Avenue that she sees the edge of the building appear in front of her. Her heart clenches painfully. Right. Cordova Street is right before Broadway, she remembers too late. Her pace slows on the sidewalk as the street sign for Cordova St. comes into view.

It's not that Kara's been avoiding this part of town. She just hasn't had a reason to be over here. Not since, well…

Kara considers making a detour so she doesn't have to walk past L-Corp. She checks her watch, and knows she doesn't have enough time to walk a few extra blocks. It's too crowded to get away with any amount of super speed, too.

Sighing, Kara walks the familiar sidewalk past the plaza in front of L-Corp. Lena's probably in her office on the top floor, on a call or scribbling notes on reports. Kara hopes Lena's assistant is bringing her lunch and nudging her to go home at a reasonable hour.

She's walked this path so many times, and the familiar sights shoot a pang through her heart. This time of day, Kara would normally be on her way to L-Corp to eat with Lena, Big Belly Burger in hand. She'd drop off an extra bag with Lena's assistant and open the door to Lena's office, grinning as Lena's face brightened.

It's been weeks since Kara has seen Lena's face, and not a day has gone by where Kara hasn't missed Lena's smile. She's spent hours replaying every time Kara could have told Lena, every little way she could have changed their current fate.

Kara has spent little of her free time outside of her apartment lately. She'd even been cooking at home. Every restaurant reminds Kara of a memory of Lena, a memory of how she'd betrayed her by not sharing her truth.

Kara can't help herself when her eyes scan up the building and settle at the very top. She can't see anything from fifty floors down, but she focuses her hearing until she picks out a single heartbeat.

Steady, familiar.

Kara's eyes get misty, and she picks up her pace.

Next time, she'll remember to leave early so she can take Walnut Avenue instead.

Just saying, a lot of Edelgard's White Clouds interactions with TWSITD are a hell of a lot more forgivable when you remember its not just an Emperor and the devil she made a deal with, it's also a deeply traumatised teenager forcing herself to continue to interact with her abusers because she's trying to convince herself that her suffering at their hands meant something.
