Book Review: The Blame Game
Title: The Blame Game
Author: Ben Dunn
Rating: 4.5/5 stars
Thanks to BookSirens and Ben Dunn for a free advance review e-copy of this book, I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Arthur Harrison has just been voted in as a Conservative MP in a long standing Labour seat, he wasnā€™t expecting to win and he didnā€™t want to.Ā  Now he finds himself attempting to toe the party line, whilst realising he doesnā€™t actually agree with Tory policies or want to fit in with the old boys club that is Westminster.
What I liked: This was a fun read. Arthur is likeable and his inner monologue made me snort with laughter on a number of occasions. The supporting characters were realistic and the plot moved around enough to keep it interesting. Chapters were short, which I always find a bonus as Iā€™m more likely to read it quickly!
What didnā€™t work for me: A minor critique, I didnā€™t get the sense of time, towards the end of the book we find it has taken place over a year, it really only felt like a couple of months.Ā Ā
Final thoughts:Ā  A cleverly written and incredibly witty political satire.
Who would enjoy this: Fans of contemporary fiction and satire. Possibly not for Tory voters, unless they are able to laugh at themselves.

a commission for friend @theblamegabe from our CoC campaign!
their character tristan gifted lucy a dress from when he was a teenager, but since itā€™s way too big and out of fashion, lucy worked their magic to make it something they can wear (or at least, they will, the campaign has been taking place in a single night for the last while)

Are you a fan of unreliable narrators? Main characters making terrible decisions? You'll love the new book from Sandie Jones - The Blame Game. "Naomi is a psychologist specializing in domestic abuse. Her husband often accuses her of crossing the line between professional and personal with her clients. When one of her clients goes missing it looks like Naomi is responsible. She knows the only way to clear her name is to find him ... while she still can." Naomi is a character that makes bad decision after bad decision. For someone who makes a living reading people, she is awfully bad at it. I actually yelled at the book a couple of times because of her terrible decision making. The ending was a little abrupt - not much leadup - and you would think the police would have figured that part out. Jones keeps going with the twists to the final page. Still another great audio performance. Karissa Vacker does an outstanding job with all of the characters especially in that wild scene at the end. A couple of unresolved issues that would've been nice to see worked out. Fans of Jones and unreliable narrators should like this one. The Blame Game
I will never forgetĀ ā€˜The Blame Gameā€™. A piece of paper handed to me by my counsellor, no more than half an A4 page of writing - changed my life. Iā€™d always been taught to take responsibility of my life and be accountable for my own actions, my own choices. Blaming others was deemed an excuse. In some situations, I see the importance of being accountable. However, I realise now thatĀ it is sometimes necessary to put the blame onto others. One step to my recovery was to stop blaming myself, stop beating myself up over things I could no longer control and to let go of the past. Even if it was my fault, what use is it to carry all this blame around with me.Ā
Tumblr media
If it was his fault, her fault, their fault or ours, what does it matter anymore? Whats done is done... we can't go back and change things, but we can learn, grow and keep moving forward, leaving the past and theĀ ā€˜blameā€™ behind.Ā
Go ahead, try it, put all that blame and anger you have built up inside of you into a box and envisage yourself handing it over to someone else. Blame someone else, they don't have to know - if you don't want them to.Ā

Itā€™s not my Fault!ā€
How many times have we heard that? Seriously, how many times? I hear it every day! I hear it from my kids, my husband, my baby daddy, my friends. Itā€™s NEVER their fault. So, whoā€™s fault is it? Is it mine? Is it? Is it my fault? Mmmmm, I think not!
Life has taught me many lessons in 44 years. The hardest to learn was the lesson on accountability. Itā€™s easy to blame someone else, but not so easy to accept our part in a catastrophic situation.Ā
Case and point: IĀ have a friend that was scheduled to renew his registration for his vehicles in early July. The notice came in the mail a month or two before he needed to snag his stickers. He gave them to me and asked me to hold onto them and remind him as the time got closer. Sure thing, right? I can do that, and so I did. I gave weekly reminders all the way up to his birthday. I even offered to mail out the registrations to safe time and fuss. He said he would take care of it. We are now at the end of August (dang near into September) and my dear friend NEVER got his stickers renewed! I have given multiple reminders since the passing of his birthday and keep hearingĀ ā€œIā€™m busy, I donā€™t have time, I donā€™t have the money.ā€ All valid, but it doesnā€™t change the fact that heā€™s riding dirty!
Compounding Factors: Beyond not getting the stickers for his vehicles, my friend has been having some problems with insurance. He received a letter from his agent stating that they were dropping the coverage on one of his rides. He was irate!Ā ā€œIā€™ve paid my premiums! Why are they doing this shit?ā€ I hop on line and take a look at his driving record and I see why! Ticket, ticket... ticket, ticket, ticket! Seems like someone has an issue with time management combined with a lead foot and is always in a hurry to get somewhere! He contacted the insurance agent who was supposed to be looking into options. He hasnā€™t heard back from the agent in over a week. I ask,Ā ā€œdid you call back to see whatā€™s going on?ā€ Nope.Ā ā€œDid you reach out to other insurance companies to see if you can get coverage elsewhere?ā€ NOPE! I was met with the infamousĀ ā€œI donā€™t have time to make calls while I am on the road.ā€ Ummm, Ok! Never mind the fact that sometimes we talk for an hour or so while heā€™s driving, there is not time to call the agent. Got it!
The Icing on the Cake: My dear friend happens to drive for a living, and he drives for a great company that compensates him well! He needs a clean driving record and a current license to stay employed.
Looking at the above scenario, can anyone see the makings of a catastrophe? No? Just me? Ok... let me point out the obvious
1. Registration on his vehicles are almost 2 months out of compliance. This may result in some extra hoop jumping with the BMV.
2. Riding around with expired registration puts my dear friend at greater risk of getting pulled over and ticketed... again.Ā
3. Additional tickets areĀ  going to do NOTHING to help him negotiate with his insurance company to keep all his vehicles covered.
3. He is about to lose coverage on one of his vehicles and hasnā€™t done anything to fix the situation. There is a good possibility that when his insurance company drops the coverage, the BMV will get the notification and send out an insurance verification request. Failure to provide proof of coverage for all vehicles will result in license suspension.
4. Suspended license means losing his job!Ā
Do we see the catastrophe trail now?
So, I ask... Whoā€™s fault is it? Is this my fault? Is this the BMVā€™s fault? Is this the insurance companyā€™s fault? Mmm, pretty sure that if my friend was doing what he was supposed to all along, none of this would have happened, yet he seems to still think none of this is his fault when he had time, he didnā€™t have the money. When he had the money, he didnā€™t have the time. He can make calls while driving, just not to the insurance company. Something always happens to make him late. He just didnā€™t realize that he was driving so fast. I guess when youā€™re a victim of circumstance, it really isnā€™t your fault!
