Wonderland by Jennifer Hillier has been rereleased as an audiobook. "Vanessa Castro moved to Seaside to get away from mistakes in her past. Her first day as Deputy Police Chief is not going well. There's an unidentifiable homeless man rotting on the Midway of Wonderland. And a kid who climbed the Wonder Wheel is missing after posting a photo from the top. As Vanessa investigates she discovers more potential victims and wonders just what has been happening in the park." High creep factor in the this one - Clown Museum - Doll House - a dungeon that's an urban myth - there are lots of creepy moments. Vanessa Castro is almost an antihero with the contrast of her behavior at the beginning and her refusal to grant favors. There are several twists from Hillier including a couple of wild ones at the end. Eunice Wong does a wonderful job with the audiobook performance especially with the wide range of characters. A great early book from Hillier. #wonderland #jenniferhillier #macmillanaudio #eunicewong #netgalley #bookstagram #bookshelves #booknerd #readinglife #bookphotography #bookcommunity #bookblogger #sodacityreads #suspensebook #bookhaul #literarycrimefiction #homelibrary #thrillerbooks #domesticthriller #crimefiction #thriller #characterdrivenbooks #mysterythriller #bookrecs #twistythrillers https://www.instagram.com/p/Cq-cVtwLpwW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

🌟 BOOK REVIEW🌟 🌟 💫 Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Jennifer Hillier’s “Things We Do in the Dark” falls into the slow burner thrillers category which are not instantly gratifying. At it’s heart, the story is a dark take on the intimate mother-daughter relationship and how the characters around them are affected as their journeys unfold. A summary without giving out too much- Paris Peralta wakes up in a pool of blood next to the bathtub where her husband, an erstwhile comedian Jimmy lies dead and sure enough, she is the prime accused. However her dark past can accentuate her criminal streak, the past she desperately wants to hide Sure enough Ruby wants a share of the wealth and is blackmailing Ruby. Act 2 shifts to Toronto-where the only person who knows about Paris’s past, a Filipino, Ruby, accused of a first degree murder and currently residing in a Toronto prison is about to come out on parole and crime journalist turned true crime podcast host, Drew Malcolm wants to unearth the impact of Ruby’s abusive relationship on her daughter, his best friend and one time roommate Joey and subsequently stop the parole. The author throws enough hints along the way to linking the two narratives however with so many characters in both stories and each having some motive, it’s a guess game to the end. To nitpick, the only relationship of the title to the narrative is the name of the podcast though the true crime podcast aspect wasn’t explored as well as we have seen in some of the recent books. I am a fan of the journey and that’s where the book shines. As mentioned, the multitude of characters gave me is an ode to the Agatha Christie school where I was left guessing who the eventual murderer would be and the reveal was thought out and satisfying. What worked was the mother daughter relationship and gave me a lot of “The Push” vibes and can be considered equally twisted. It’s not for the weak hearted though. Recommended. #bookreview #bookofthemonth #thingswedointhedark #jenniferhillier #thriller #thrillerbooks #motherdaughter #truecrime #bookstagram #bookphotography #bookrecommendations #booknerdigans https://www.instagram.com/p/ChipQg1LzvU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Happy Tuesday! And happy publication day to Things We Do In The Dark by Jennifer Hillier! . Things We Do In The Dark is a wonderful five-star psychological thriller. This story hooked me from page one. I loved all the suspense and shocking revelations. The twists weren't surprising, but that's only because the story is so tightly constructed. Things We Do In The Dark is a compelling thriller with a satisfying mystery, a wonderful romance, and a cast of interesting and entertaining characters, each in their own devious way. It's fast-paced most of the time with very few lulls, which I also loved immensely. The story is told in six parts, and the reader gets to experience it from multiple points of view. Paris Peralta is the leading voice and character, so I mainly experienced the tale through her eyes. I enjoyed the changes in perspectives, though, because they allowed me to see things differently than I could have if I only knew Paris' POV. In some instances, the changing perspectives clued me to the next reveal only pages before it was stated, so I could tell that every choice was masterfully purposeful to keep the suspense at an unflagging high. The story is not just a mystery thriller but also a story with a heart that I could grab on to and enjoy. The emotions ran high, the past held a lot of baggage, and much needed to be resolved for Paris to feel like a whole person – one without skeletons in the closet and secrets on the shelf. It's not just a thriller about the death of her husband, it is also a chance for Paris to be able to live and love, and this makes such a compelling story. I had trouble putting this book down and ended up reading long into the night. . 📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖 . What’s the last book you stayed up long into the night to read/finish? . 📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖📖 . . . . #thingswedointhedark #jenniferhillier #bookrecommendations #bookreview #bookreviewsofinstagram #thrillerbooks #thriller #thrillerbook #thrillerreads #thrilleraddict #thrillerbooksaddict #psychologicalthriller #booksbooksbooks #bookworm #book #books #bibliophile #bookish #bookshelf #bookstagram #bookblogger #bookblog #bookblogging #bookbloggersofinstagram (at Lake Davidson) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgMYdJWrvda/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Book Season
As we continue to move through the cold and snowy Midwest winter, I’m happy as a clam (or maybe happy as a bookworm?) to stay snuggled indoors and read.  And they don’t have to all be 5-star masterpieces either; if a book gets 3 stars from me, then I usually feel it was worth my time.  I’m happy to say these next three were definitely worth my time, and probably yours too!
________________________________________________________________
The Patient by Jane Shemilt
Tumblr media
Rachel is a doctor, happily married to her school teacher husband, living in a nice neighborhood outside of London.  At least she thinks she’s happy.  But when she thinks about her adult daughter and the tension they seem to have, and the fact that things with her husband and her job all seem to be just “ho-hum,” Rachel is ripe for the excitement new neighbor, Luc, brings.  But as with most affairs, there’s a price for Rachel and Luc to be together…a very, very expensive price.  This was the first book I’ve read by this author and I enjoyed it, even if it was a little predictable toward the end.
3 Stars
Special Note:  Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Things We Do in the Dark by Jennifer Hillier
Tumblr media
Paris is married to an older, wealthy man.  But despite what people think, she truly does care a great deal for her husband.  So when Paris is found bloody and holding a razor next to her dearly departed, the story more or less tells itself---at least on version of it.  Through flashbacks, we learn about Paris’s background, her imprisoned mother, and the ex-roommate who wants nothing more than for Paris to open up to him.  Although there were lots of twists and turns, this was an easy read with a good pace.  Definitely something to pick up when you’re looking to pass the time; snowy night or otherwise.
3 Stars
Special Note:  Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

No Place to Run by Mark Edwards
Tumblr media
In a weird happenstance, a woman on a train recognizes a girl running in a field; a girl who went missing two years previously.  When the woman notifies the girl’s family, the older brother, Aidan, decides to take some time off work to see if there’s anything to the older woman’s claims.  By doing this, Aidan bites off way more than he can chew, getting mixed up in some dangerous situations he never could’ve imagined.  Like most of Mark Edwards’ books, this was face paced with lots of things going on to keep the reader guessing all the way to the end.  Although a little predictable at the very end, the book moves so quickly you won’t mind where it takes you.
3 Stars
Special Note:  Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Think you know the characters in this book? Fat chance, reader. Fat chance. This book has taken turns I haven't expected, and I've loved every one of them! Also, I have a theory... I'm hoping to finish Little Secrets this weekend. WAYR? LITTLE SECRETS: Four hundred and eighty seconds. That’s how long it took for someone to steal Marin Machado's four-year-old son. Marin had the perfect life. Married to her college sweetheart, she owns a chain of upscale hair salons, and Derek runs his own company. They're admired in their community and are a loving family. Up until the day Sebastian is taken. A year later, Marin is a shadow of herself. The FBI search has gone cold. The publicity has faded. She and her husband rarely speak. The only thing keeping her going is the unlikely chance that one day Sebastian reappears. She hires a P.I. to pick up where the police left off, but instead of finding him, she discovers that Derek is having an affair with a younger woman. Kenzie Li is an artist and grad student—Instagram famous—and up to her eyeballs in debt. She knows Derek is married. She also knows he's rich, and dating him comes with perks: help with bills, trips away, expensive gifts. He isn't her first rich boyfriend, but she finds herself hoping he'll be the last. She's falling for him—and that was never part of the plan. Discovery of the affair sparks Marin back to life. She's lost her son; she's not about to lose her husband, too. Kenzie is an enemy with a face, which means this is a problem Marin can fix. But as she sets a plan in motion, another revelation surfaces. Derek's lover might know what happened to their son. And so might Derek. From the author of Jar of Hearts, a mother driven to the edge by the disappearance of her son learns her husband is having an affair with the woman who might have kidnapped him. #MinotaurBooks #JenniferHillier #Thriller #Mystery #MysteryThriller #CurrentlyReading #CurrentlyListening #BookStaGram #SMP #StMartinsPress #BookWorm https://www.instagram.com/p/CEMVd6sAg6G/?igshid=37jqkcx3kdya

I received an advanced reader copy of Little Secrets from Minotaur Books, St. Martin’s Press via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. Little Secrets by Jennifer Hillier is a story about reclaiming life after loss. Marin and Derek Machado’s perfect life is shattered when their four year old son, Sebastian, is kidnapped while Christmas shopping. Sixteen months later, the trail has run cold, Marin has physically withdrawn from most aspects of her life and now her marriage is in jeopardy. The PI that Marin had hired to find Sebastian, discovers that Derek is having an affair with a young college girl, Kenzie Li. Kenzie is a poor college student trying to make ends meet. Most of her past boyfriends were older, financially well off men. The hate Marin feels for this young gold-digger breathes life back into her. Marin vows that she will not lose her husband too and will go to extreme lengths to save her marriage. Soon Marin discovers that Derek has secrets more heinous than a young mistress. This was a fast paced, easy read with a few unforgivable secrets. The author did a great job depicting the emotions of the characters without getting too wordy. Little Secrets is a great book to get lost in and is available today, Tuesday, April 21, 2020. Jennifer Hillier's Little Secrets: A Novel is truly a psychological thriller. A young boy is abducted while he is with his mother and she blames herself. Prior to the abduction, the parents had a perfect life. Now, their lives are changed forever. This plot is very twisted and unsuspected. it will have you sitting on the edge of your seats. I highly recommend it.

The one time in a month when I don't crib about how time flies by quickly! The new @bookofthemonth picks are here❤️ 🌟 🌟 Things We Do In The Dark 🌟 🌟 By the author of my fav thrillers “Little Secrets” When Paris Peralta is arrested in her own bathroom―covered in blood, holding a straight razor, her celebrity husband dead in the bathtub behind her―she knows she'll be charged with murder. But as bad as this looks, it's not what worries her the most. With the unwanted media attention now surrounding her, it's only a matter of time before someone from her long hidden past recognizes her and destroys the new life she's worked so hard to build, along with any chance of a future. Because the only thing worse than a murder charge are two murder charges. 🌟 🌟 The Lies I Tell - a domestic thriller by Julie Clark 🌟 🌟 From the New York Times bestselling author of The Last Flight comes a twisted con-woman thriller about two women out for revenge―or is it justice? Two women. Many aliases. Can't wait!! Which was your BOTM pick? #bookofthemonth #bookphotography #bookstagram #booklovers #thrillerbooks #thingswedointhedark #theliesitell #julieclark #jenniferhillier https://www.instagram.com/p/CeY12D5LRtx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Little Secrets
Little Secrets review #LittleSecrets #books #Reading #JenniferHillier @JenniferHillier #thriller
Title: Little Secrets Author: Jennifer Hillier Genre: psychological thriller I’m a sucker for a good plot twist. As long as it’s reasonable and not just some random thing thrown in to convince the reader that the author is clever. Because it’s not clever. At. All. But if you can lead the reader down a path, throw in a twist, then the reader can follow the plot back and see how it all makes…
