Everyone’s maybe not doing so good and could use a little warmth.

6.5k, Lucretia & Taako Near the end of the century, Lucretia is feeling rough. Taako pulls her out of her funk and initiates a much needed rest. Fantastic characterization, of Lucretia as a whole, and the loyal, warm side of Taako. Warning for mentions of a suicide attempt and suicidal ideation.

He sees them now, far in the distance, and he sees his Umbrastaff, too, lying dangerously close to its wheels. As if on cue, he watches the tires crush it to pieces. “Whoops,” he says. - Lup is trapped. And then she isn’t. --- In which Taako breaks his umbrella during the Petals to the Metal race, unknowingly freeing Lup, who is almost immediately captured by Kravitz. After becoming a member of the Raven Queen's retinue with Kravitz as her trainer, she has two missions: 1) find her family, and 2) ruin Kravitz's afterlife. A story about enemies becoming friends and lost families finding their way back to one another.

197k (currently), Lup & Kravitz Incredible characterization. I love the way Lup is written. Hilarious shenanigans, sweet friendship-building, and terribly sad sometimes, because it dives deep into the reality of Lup existing in a world that's forgotten her.

They’ve survived the apocalypse and now as far as they know, they’re the only ones left. Perhaps it was inevitable that they’d consider… repopulation. Lucretia writes up a weekly schedule to try and address that. Absolutely no one is happy with this.

76k (currently), IPRE crew The premise for this one is incredibly offputting, but I'm so glad I gave it a chance. The characterization and quality of writing is absolutely wonderful. I also love the attention to detail of the realistic difficulty of just surviving. Fantastically atmospheric, this fic dives deep into the uncertainty and fear of the first cycle, when the crew are all strangers, and the love that turns them into a family. Warning for extensive discussion of sexual assault.

Emissary Davenport by DragonWrites

A series of stories where Captain Davenport is secretly an emissary of Garl Glittergold, Gnomish god of pranks. And when you're a serious-minded captain on a mission to save all of reality, having a cheerful trickster god as your unexpected patron can get a little strange...

300k, Davenport A series of four works set in an AU where Davenport is an emissary to the leader of the gnomish pantheon. My absolute favorite depiction of Davenport, ever. The first three works are explorations of Davenport as a character and the relationships between people and gods in a DnD world. The last, Lost Gods, is the best fanfiction I've ever read. I can't express how good it is. The attention to detail among myriad plot threads, the building of themes, the characterization across just about every single character in Balance, all come together to create 223k words of a genuine masterpiece.

Lars Porsenna

Lars Porsenna was the semi-legendary Etruscan king of Chiusi who famously attacked and probably occupied Rome c. 508 BCE when the city had just exiled its last king and was moving towards becoming a republic. His extravagant tomb is described by Pliny but has never been found.

Details of the early life of Lars Porsenna (also spelt Larth Porsina), his accession, and even the dates of his reign are all lacking. This is perhaps not surprising for a figure who is more legend than fact. He sprang into history only via the records of Greek and Roman historians writing centuries after his lifetime and who were only concerned with his infamous siege of Rome. More is known of his kingdom Chiusi, Etruscan name Clevsin and Clusium to the Romans, which was a powerful city in central Italy and a prominent member of the Etruscan League. The growth and prosperity of Chiusi in precisely the period of Porsenna's reign is attested by archaeological evidence.

Lucius Tarquinius Superbus

Lucius Tarquinius Superbus (the 'Proud') was a member of the Etruscan Tarquinii clan from Tarquinia. He was Rome's seventh, and in the event, last king. Following his tyrannical reign and the rape of the Roman noblewoman Lucretia by Tarquinius' son Sextus and her subsequent suicide, the aristocrats of Rome, led by Lucius Iunius Brutus and Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus, persuaded the assembly to exile their king in 510 BCE. Brutus and Collatinus declared themselves Rome's first consuls, and the Roman Republic was born. However, Tarquinius was actually away laying siege to Ardea at the time of his exile vote and so was still both willing and able to make a serious attempt to retake his throne. Tarquinius first joined forces with the Etruscan cities of Cerveteri, Tarquinia, and Veii. A combined force attacked Rome but was defeated at the battle of Silva Arsia. Undeterred Tarquinius then convinced Lars Porsenna, to lay siege to Rome c. 508 BCE.

Trump won. As much as I would like to say we will all get through this, not all of us will. As a matter of fact, the Trever Project has reported a 700% increase in suicides since the election. I'm scared, yes, but right now we have an opportunity to set up protections(VPNs, grassroots organizations, learning what we need to do to keep ourselves and others safe) that will be harder to access under Trump. I'm going to leave some videos/websites/books that I can think of off the top of my head. I don't agree with everything said(far from it), so put your critical thinking cap on ;). y'know, i never really got the logic of people blaming ford for the aquatos' generational psychic trauma. like. yeah, he did manufacture the water curse, but without ford's intervention, augustus would've been an orphan whose parents were both killed by maligula, and honestly probably would've been a far less well adjusted person in adulthood since he didn't have the support of lucretia in his formative years. if anything, his hatred of psychic powers would be more intense, not less.

don't get me wrong, ford did a LOT of fucked up shit, he's called peepaw warcrimes for damn good reason. although he genuinely did try to help lucretia and augustus, his methods were obviously less then ethical, and definitely not the best. AND, like, even if he didn't have time to hunt for helmut's body bc he was trying to relocate lucretia as fast as humanly possible, he could've at least LABELLED HIS FUCKING BRAIN JAR before committing mental suicide. ig he probably thought that someone would check the unlabelled brain and find out that it was helmut (which otto SHOULD'VE DONE but agh whatever) but he could've made the process a LITTLE EASIER, JUST SAYING.

...anyways, what was i talking about? oh yeah. assign blame correctly folks. get crully for the war crimes he actually committed, not for the ones he didn't. wya, out.

it makes me Feral how virgil paints dido. criticizing the gods for their inference, placing blame on them. dido’s suicide launching a generational curse, giving the carthaginians an almost divine reason outside of their own to hate rome. dido being the lucretia for carthage, sparking a war without end in her name. i just…. wow. he absolutely did not have to do that but his writing on dido fascinates me

Shakespeare Weekend

The tenth volume of The works of Mr. William Shakespear: in ten volumes published in 1728 by Alexander Pope (1688-1744) and Dr. George Sewell (d. 1726) for Jacob Tonson (1655-1736), is considered a supplementary volume added to the collection in the second edition. It is the last volume of the collection and takes a slight detour in text, opening with several of Shakespeare’s poems and ending with a critical analysis of his plays and the lifecycle of the stage.  

The volume contains the poems Venus and Adonis, Tarquin and Lucrece, and a miscellany of other poems. Venus and Adonis begins with a short dedication to Henry Wriothesly, (1581-1624) Earl of Southampton, where Shakespeare mentions that the poem is “the first heir of my invention” leading historians to assume that it is likely his first publication dating to 1593. Shakespeare also promises within the dedication to compose a “grave labour” and makes good on it in 1594 with Tarquin and Lucrece narrating the rape and suicide of Roman noblewoman Lucretia (d. 510 BC).  

The critical analysis of Shakespeare’s plays and essay on the Art, Rise and Progress of the Stage were both written by Charles Gildon (1665-1724). While Gildon was an essayist and biographer, he was also known as an English hack writer and nemesis of Alexander Pope; it is unclear how Gildon would have gotten the opportunity to be included in the volume. Full page engravings by Flemish artist Michael Vandergucht (1660-1725) precede the poems of Volume 10, as does a glossary of old words used within Shakespeare’s works.
